Mt. San Jacinto College Celebrated Record-Breaking Class with Virtual Graduation Ceremony Yolanda Diego had much more to celebrate than the average graduate when she served as the student speaker of Mt. San Jacinto College’s virtual graduation ceremony.

The 37-year-old Hemet resident started to pursue her higher education in the early 2000s, when she attended community college in East Los Angeles, where she grew up. But substance abuse, living on Skid Row in downtown L.A., and a growing family paused that journey. In January 2018, just a few weeks after having a baby, the mother of eight children began pursuing her communications degree at MSJC, determined to finish what she started.

“All the help and the resources that I got from MSJC were what I needed to succeed. Without those resources, I probably would be lost,” said Diego, who

also celebrates 10 years of sobriety this month. “It’s never too late.”

On Thursday, May 21, Diego spoke to the largest graduating class in MSJC history when it held its inaugural virtual graduation ceremony. The college held its annual ceremony online.

Mt. San Jacinto College awarded a record-breaking 3,554 degrees and certificates to 1,958 graduates. That’s

251 more graduates than last year, when the previous record was set. The graduates earned a total of 3,246 associate degrees and 308 career certificates (some students earn more than one degree, certificate or a combination).

Menifee resident Brandy Donini, 46, first attended MSJC in 1998. But life took priority. She raised a family, suffered a cancer scare, and worked several great jobs over the years, but an instinct for helping others convinced her to return to MSJC to pursue a degree in nursing.

“For those of you who don't think it's possible, it is, it really is when you set goals and you put your mind to something,” the honors students said. “Don't give up. Life happens to everybody.”

As for Diego, her educational journey will continue when she joins her oldest daughter in college this fall.

“I’m walking into those doors at Cal State San Bernardino hand in hand with my daughter,” Diego said, choking up. “I walked her into her elementary school in kindergarten, and now she’s walking me through the university doors.”

Mt. San Jacinto College serves more than 27,000 students in a district covering 1,700 square miles from the San Gorgonio Pass to Temecula.

Things You Might Not Know About the Birds in Your Backyard Ever wonder why woodpeckers peck where they do?

Or why you never see a hummingbird on the ground?

Here are some facts to impress your friends with!

Woodpeckers Peck with Purpose Contrary to what cartoons may have taught you, woodpeckers don’t drill into trees for the sole purpose of annoying humans. Acorn woodpeckers use their beaks to so they can store acorns, almonds, hazelnuts, and other sustenance.

Some Birds Can Nap in Mid-Air Some birds take very long commutes during migrating season—and like human travelers, they’re able to nap in mid-air. For a study published in Nature Communications, researchers a brain-wave activity sensor to frigate birds and noted the birds spent some time asleep while "cruising" in higher air currents and altitudes.

Hummingbirds Can’t Walk There are some compromises that have to be made when you’re a bird that can fly backwards. To reduce drag, hummingbirds have and non-locomoting feet. Their legs allow them to perch and shuffle sideways a bit, but they’re not designed for long walks.

Crows Can Recognize Faces If you think your local is out to get you, it may not be paranoia. Research conducted at the University of Washington in 2008 that the bird is able to recognize faces and hold a grudge when provoked. In the study, scientists donned a caveman mask and then trapped crows (humanely, of course) before banding and setting them free. When the researchers walked the campus in the mask, the crows circled and vocally scolded their suspected captor.

There’s a Reason They Don’t Fall Off Branches While Sleeping Most birds not only sleep standing up, they do it while perched on a thin tree branch. Why don’t they fall off? The flexor tendons in their legs make an when they settle in, keeping their feet locked in place during sleep.

Wine Country Bistros Offer Enticing Dishes

Are you looking for a delicious lunch or dinner paired with great wines and fabulous views? Several of the wonderful wineries in the Temecula Valley Wine Country have bistros offering all this in casual, relaxing settings. Recently my husband, Todd, and I visited the following five bistros and enjoyed them all. We are so lucky to have these outstanding wine and food tasting venues in the wine country.

Oak Mountain Winery

On a lovely spring day, we sat outside on Cave Café’s charming patio overlooking the surrounding mountains and vineyards. The setting could not have been more idyllic for our leisurely lunch. We first ordered the wine (most important things first, I always say). I had a light, crisp Sauvignon Blanc that was perfect for spring sipping. Todd loved his bold, fruity Tempranillo, which was smooth and pairs perfectly with rich dishes. The talented chef, Kevin Grant, stopped by and described his seasonal, healthy approach to a variety of menu items.

This dish’s spicy tang went so well with both wines. We also savored the creative Fried Manicotti full of cheese and smoked meats, served with a caramelized onion dip. Making choices off the enticing menu was a challenge, but we ended up splitting the Cave Club, a delicious take on traditional clubs with turkey, bacon, avocado, pickled onion, tomato, lettuce and mozzarella. However, in the future Todd wants to make sure he tries the popular Bison Burger served with a red pepper aioli. For dessert we shared Chocolate Budino, a luscious chocolate mousse topped by hazelnut crunch. Needless to say, we left full, satisfied, and very impressed.

Besides dining on the patio, you can also enjoy the special experience of dining in the wine country’s only café that is 75 feet underground. The Cave Café is open daily from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Reservations are required. OakMountainWinery.com for additional information.

Bel Vino’s Bistro is a rocking place with live music on Saturday and Sunday afternoons. The vibe is lively and fun. The food is casual and good.

We snacked on their crispy homemade chips with aioli dip and then split a huge Meatball Sandwich with tangy marinara and oozing mozzarella, but there were other appealing choices such as a Hot Roast Beef Sandwich, a Cheeseburger, and a Turkey Wrap. You can even order a good oldfashioned All-American Hot Dog. Or how about a charcuterie tray accompanied by some award-winAt Bel Vino Bistro we split a huge Meatball Sandwich with ning wines. My mellow tangy marinara and oozing mozzarella.

Chardonnay had nice flavors of apples, pears, and honey and was a great match for the salty chips. Todd’s luscious red Merlot, which was slightly spicy with hints of chocolate, paired so well with the rich meatballs. We were there on a rainy Saturday so we ate inside in the spacious, rustic tasting room, but on nice days (which of course is most of the time in our wine country) the patio is a wonderful place to wile away the afternoon with gorgeous vineyard valley views.

Robert Renzoni Vineyards

Mama Rosa’s Trattoria features the only brick oven in wine country. The patio offers beautiful views of vine draped hills.

Mama Rosa’s Trattoria, named after owner Robert’s grandmother, offers authentic Italian dishes with many recipes coming straight from the family’s Italian kitchen and features the only brick oven in the wine country. On the day we visited, the patio was humming with happy family groups and friends enjoying a sunny spring day as they savored the food, the wine, and the spectacular view.

I ordered a crispy, refreshing Prosecco and Todd enjoyed a bold Sangiovese highlighted by cherry, raspberry and vanilla flavors. Both wines paired beautifully with Julia’s Favorite pizza featuring creamy mozzarella, fresh tomatoes, fragrant basil, and drizzles of olive oil. We loved this delicious pizza on a thin, flavorful crust made with flour imported from Italy, although we watched waiters bringing so many other tantalizing dishes to guests, such as Polpette E. Marinara—homemade meatballs smothered in sauce and cheese— also an Italian Cobb Salad, and Prosciutto Mac & Cheese. On a previous visit, we enjoyed an abundant charcuterie platter with special cheeses and meats imported from Italy. We liked it that Robert Renzoni himself was walking around the patio, greeting guests and making everyone feel welcomed. It was almost as if we were dining in the family’s home. We will definitely have to return.

Monte de Oro The bistro offers a wide variety of casual lunch items, such as salads, meat and cheese platters, burgers, and appetizers. I enjoyed a wonderful Mediterranean Salad with crispy greens, cherry tomatoes, red onion, bell peppers, olives, feta cheese, and chicken. Todd loved the Monte Special Burger with garlic aioli and caramelized onion on a fresh brioche bun, accompanied by tasty (and unique) Truffle Fries. As we happily munched, we watched guests around us nibbling on a nice cheese and fruit platter, guacamole and chips, crispy calamari, and baked brie. A subtly sweet, fruity rosé enhanced the salad and was also a good match with the rich burger, but there are many other outstanding wines at Monte de Oro to pair with dishes.

These great dishes can be enjoyed on the winery’s pleasant, spacious patio with expansive views of surrounding vineyards and mountains. This is a glorious choice for enjoying a relaxing afternoon in the wine country.

Baba Joon’s Bistro at Fazeli Winery features Persian Tacos, served inside lavash bread with chicken koobideh (a ground chicken mixture), pickled onions and salad greens.

Fazeli Cellars We especially love the unique bistro fare at Baba Joon’s Kitchen because of its Mediterranean and Persian flair, reflecting owner BJ Fazeli’s heritage. The patio setting is lovely with one of the best views of the valley and also overlooking the majestic green mountains.

We first enjoyed a signature appetizer — delicious Walnut Panar, made of walnut cream cheese topped with a pomegranate reduction. As we spread this savory mixture on toasted baguettes, we sipped some superb wines. I loved my Boland Rooz (similar to Sauvignon Blanc) which was bursting with melon and stone fruit flavors and Todd raved about his earthy Shiraz with strong tastes of berries and pepper. Next, we savored a delectable Gyro flatbread consisting of lamb and gyro meat, red onion, cucumber, tomatoes and ranch dressing — a perfect pairing with Todd’s red wine. But the most unique dish was Persian Tacos, served inside lavash bread with chicken koobideh (a ground chicken mixture), pickled onions, and salad greens, drizzled with mast o musir (Persian yogurt). Other menu items are also appealing, including Dolma (stuffed grape leaves), Fava Bean Hummus, Caesar Salad, and Cheeseburger Sliders.

View Into an Artist’s World Lynn Christopher: Set Designer, Art Director, Painter and Sculptor!

At the age of 20 Lynn Christopher was the youngest set designer at Universal Studios. She worked for 30 years in Hollywood as a set designer and art director in film and television.

Lynn was the lead set designer on numerous episodes of the TV show “True Blood,” and she was the set designer for the film “Seabiscuit,” and many more shows (IMDb.com) over the course of her career.

Lynn Christopher Fine Art She is also a talented painter and sculptor. Four years ago, Lynn left Los Angeles and moved to the Temecula Valley to focus on her art. Currently her sculpture, “Kraig,” is exhibited at the Sparks Gallery in the Gaslamp District of San Diego. On April 10, one of Lynn’s paintings, “The Quiet Within,” will be displayed in the gallery of The Montalbán theatre in Hollywood, located near Hollywood and Vine.

Sparks Gallery Liaison, Zach Telles, says, "We have chosen to exhibit Lynn Christopher's artwork due to her keenness for technical execution evident in the painstaking attention to detail in her paintings and sculptures. Through her level of realism, Christopher brings a special homage to the individuals she references, eliciting a sense of familiarity between viewer and subject matter."

Artistic Process “I am a perfectionist,” Lynn explains. “I will keep working a piece until it satisfies me that it is ready. The face and eyes are incredibly important as they convey emotion, so I take my time as I love to pursue the truth of a person, which I find in their eyes. I also highly render the hands. I work from photographs or with live models. I use marble, resin or bronze to create my sculptures, and if I paint them it will be with oils.

My paintings are done in oil on canvas or panel. I like saturated colors and lots of contrast when creating an abstract painting. I have a fondness for drawing interiors and urban scenes, and I found the studio backlots offered a wealth of subject matter when I was working as a set director.”

Her earliest training was with the renowned master artist and teacher, Theodore Lukits, at his studio in Los Angeles. She went on to study at the California Art Institute, the Otis Parsons School of Design, and the Los Angeles Academy of Figurative Art. She is a member of The National Sculpture Society–Southern California, and the California Art Club.

Are Artists Drawn That Way? “I was fortunate to grow up in a family of gifted designers and artists, so I was always nurtured and supported, and have been lucky to live a life as a professional creative,” says Lynn.

Artistic talent is in Lynn’s bloodline. Her grandfather, Paul Groesse, won three Academy Awards during the 1940s for Best Art Direction for “Pride and Prejudice,” “The Yearling,” “Little Women,” and he was nominated in the same category for another eight films (IMDb.com). Lynn’s son, Paul Christopher, is a concept artist/illustrator and has worked on “Transformers 6,” “Spiderman 4” and other films, as well as the computer games “Call of Duty” and “Titan Fall” to name a few.

Art Accolades Lynn’s artwork is presented in annual shows hosted by the California Art Club at Los Angeles Museums, and by independently held group shows throughout the United States. In 2012 Lynn ushered her work into the California Art Club’s (CAC) annual Gold Medal show and won Best Sculpture. In 2014 and 2016 she was honored again with the Gold by the CAC. She says she is particularly fond of her 2014 entry, a whimsical sculpture “The Rabbit King”, as her friend’s son

modeled for the work. In 2019 the San Diego Museum of Art Artist’s Guild awarded Lynn Second Place for her drawing “Tamura” at the open exhibition in Balboa Park.

Lynn says, “The comment that I hear most from people is that my works look alive, like they could take a step or start speaking or begin breathing.”

An art collector in New Zealand, Elaine Ferguson, emailed this quote about Lynn’s artwork, “I mainly have a passion for figurative work, which is actually very hard to come by, especially of males. While Googling male sculpture images, Lynn’s work titled ‘The Silence of No’ stopped me in my tracks. The mood, the feeling, the perfectness of the sculpture grabbed me. I bought it immediately.

Lynn's talent is obvious and I’m so proud to have a piece of hers here in my home in New Zealand.”

Temecula is Home Lynn and her husband, Jeroen Voogd, relocated to Temecula’s Wine Country in 2016. “We are surrounded by vineyards and the distinct culture that the wineries bring,” says Lynn.

“Every drive through the valley reminds us of what a wonderful place this is to live. I grew up in LA, so to have the space, the wildlife and the peaceful environment is just perfect and exactly what we are looking for.”

Fine Arts Network Theater Company has devised a COVID19 safe alternative....and it’s not on-line or virtual.... it’s real.

Fine Arts Network Theater Company traditionally offers a 2-week summer theater camp that concludes with a full-length production of a musical presented at the Old Town Temecula Community Theater. With theaters still being closed, FAN put on their thinking caps and created an exciting, adventure-filled week...right in our own backyard....so to speak.

The “All the World’s a Stage” Summer Arts Adventure Camp will be held on 20 acres in the outdoors nestled amongst 100-year-old oaks in La Cresta Highlands at the Rancon Equestrian Center. Rather than a 1 two-week camp, they will offer 2-one-week camps. (July 12-18 for 12-18

years old & July 19-25 for 6-12 years old).

Each week will consist of the campers learning audition techniques, acting, choreography, vocal and choral training from professional theater makers. They will learn different pieces that will be presented at the cabaretstyle performance held on the last day of camp. Additionally, there will be a visual arts experience and a writer’s workshop.

Perhaps, the most exciting and unique thing about the camp is the opportunity for the families of campers to actually camp on-site.

Sort of a Camp Stay-cation. Camping is not required of those attending the camp but is a fun perk to inject into what has been a boring and challenging Spring and Summer for most youths.

Temecula Valley Museum Reopened The Temecula Valley Museum reopened to the public just in time for summer, Art of the Aloha Shirt: Keoni of Hawaii, 1938 – 1951 Explore the history, artistry, and production of Hawaii’s enduring fashion statement, the Aloha shirt. This exhibition of sixty objects, including original textile artwork, production sketches and swatches, advertisements, and vintage shirts tells the story of an early innovator, John ‘Keoni’ Meigs, in an industry that has left an indelible mark on fashion in the United States and the world. The Art of the Aloha Shirt: Keoni of Hawaii, 1938 – 1951 exhibit runs through Sunday, August 9, 2020 at the Temecula Valley Museum (28314 Mercedes Street).

Although many claim authorship, the exact origin of the Aloha shirt remains uncertain. The patterns of Polynesian tapa cloth, the colorful and bold floral designs of Tahitian pareau, and the sheer Japanese fabric used for making kimonos are often cited as some of the early stylistic influences of the shirt. Sometime in the late 1920s to the early 1930s, when Hawaii’s economy began to shift from an agricultural to a service-oriented economy and tourists started flying to Hawaii in ever-increasing numbers, the emphasis of the island clothing industry shifted from the production of work clothes to sports and casualwear. Combining the young islanders’ love for colorful clothing with the tourists’ desire to bring home keepsakes of their holidays on the islands, the Aloha shirt enjoyed massive popularity, particularly after the conclusion of the second World War. In the history of the Aloha Shirt, there has been no more innovative merchandiser nor better self-promoter than Keoni of Hawaii. John ‘Keoni’ Meigs (‘Keoni’ means John in the Hawaiian language) was a self-taught painter whose talent became known to the early shirt manufacturers in Honolulu. In 1938, he created his first designs, concentrating on Polynesian tapa patterns inspired by the originals he had studied at the local Bishop Museum.

Shop and dine, outside! To support Temecula businesses impacted

by COVID-19, the City of Temecula is offering temporary outdoor expansion opportunities to restaurants and retail establishments to assist in their safe reopening.

As part of this effort, beginning Wednesday, June 24, 2020, portions of Old Town Front Street are temporarily closed to vehicular traffic to allow businesses an opportunity to expand their footprint within the public right-of-way onto sidewalks and into the street for dining and shopping. Newly formed pedestrian centers in Old Town, created by the street closures, are based on the level of localized business participation, and may remain in place until the State of California removes restrictions on occupancy and social distancing.

Best of Show Winner Announced for Temecula’s 2020 Virtual Art & Street Painting Festival The City of Temecula hosted the first Temecula Virtual Art & Street Painting Festival on during the first week of June at TemeculaCA.gov/ArtFest.

This year’s virtual event featured 22 fine artists exhibiting in all mediums, and 16 chalk painters creating magnificent masterpieces in their own backyards. During this week-long event, visitors were able to shop the different artists’ websites and view chalk art that was added to the City’s webpage daily.

Congratulations to Scott Park, a Temecula resident, for winning the Best of Show Award for his outstanding display of Street Painting.

Enoch Walked with God

In the middle of Genesis 5 we find one extremely unusual man of God, a rare man in his time, as he was not consumed by the sin of the world. His name was Enoch. Although the Scriptures do not reveal a great deal about this remarkable man, we are introduced to Enoch's story in 5. There we find in a long list of the descendants of and seven generations after, Enoch was born. Two simple statements from Genesis 5:22 & 24 establish the remarkable testimony of Enoch’s Godly life, ministry and eternal hope: "Enoch walked with God three hundred years . . . . . And Enoch walked with God; and he was not, for God took him.” We learn from this notable historic account from God Himself, that for 300 years Enoch walked faithfully with God. His remarkable life and testimony came in a time of great sinfulness and wickedness on the earth. In this time before the Great , most of mankind did not walk faithfully with God, but they walked in the ways of sin and rebellion against God. Not entirely unlike the very days in which we now live! Yet, Enoch walked closely with God in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation.

Other parts of the Bible amplify how Enoch faithfully lived out his faith in God. When mankind was living in increasing sin and rebellion against the LORD, Enoch did not keep silent about the sin and ungodliness all around him. Jude says Enoch prophesied strong warning to the evil and ungodly world of his day: 14 Now Enoch, the seventh from Adam, prophesied about these men also, saying, “Behold, the Lord comes with ten thousands of His saints, 15 to execute judgment on all, to convict all who are ungodly among them of all their ungodly deeds which they have committed in an ungodly way, and of all the harsh things which ungodly sinners have spoken against Him.” (Jude 14-15) According to Genesis 5:23, Enoch’s life-span was 365 years and throughout those years, he walked by faith in God; no matter what happened, he trusted and obeyed God. And, God loved Enoch so much, that He spared him the experience of physical death.

Enoch’s life reveals important truths about his faith.

"Enoch lived sixty-five years, and begot Methuselah" (Genesis 5:21). After the birth of Methuselah (who ultimately became, at 969 years, the oldest man ever on the earth), Enoch enjoyed a 300-year journey of close fellowship with God: "After he begot Methuselah, Enoch walked with God three hundred years" (Genesis 5:22). Then, after three centuries of this glorious fellowship and service unto God, Enoch was taken into heaven without experiencing death: "And Enoch

walked with God; and he was not, for God took him" (Genesis 5:24). Enoch's intimacy with God and his unique homegoing were related to a life of abiding faith in God demonstrated by walking with God in ways that were obedient and pleasing to the Lord. "5 By faith Enoch was taken from this life, so that he did not experience death: “He could not be found, because God had taken him away. For before he was taken, he was commended as one who pleased God. 6 And without faith it is impossible to please God . . . ” (Hebrews 11:5-6a) Enoch’s life powerfully exemplified how a God pleasing life is to be lived out! What a glorious thought to be able to daily walk with God and then one promised day to receive His heavenly call into His eternal presence in Glory.

In the Rapture of the Church, many Christians, like Enoch, will also experience this entrance into heaven, without experiencing physical death. "For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first.

Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus, we shall always be with the Lord" (1 Thessalonians 4:16-17). Other believers have and may yet still face physical death before He comes, but the key ingredient of our fellowship with the Lord today is still the hope of heaven. "I am continually with You; You hold me by my right hand. You will guide me with Your counsel, and afterward receive me to glory" (Psalm 73:23-24). What an incredible hope awaits all those who believe in the Lord Jesus Christ.

How our churches and this increasingly troubled world need Godly Enoch’s today! Men and women of faith, young and old alike, who truly pursue a daily walk with God! For only those truly walking with Him can truly shine as lights in this sin darkened world. For, not by manmade religion, nor by human might or power, “but by My Spirit says the LORD of Hosts.” (Zechariah 4:6).

Jesus Christ is the Light of the world and the only true Life in His people for “ In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. (John 1:4) A life of fruitful faith flows in and through people who have been born again by His Spirit, communing with Him by daily feeding upon His Word, “faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of the God.” (Romans 10:17), those consistently and prayerfully worshipping and pouring their hearts out to Him in prayer, those gathering faithfully with His people to worship Him and serve one another.

Talking with God

By Joni Eareckson Tada "Moses said to the Lord, 'O Lord, I have never been eloquent, neither in the past nor since you have spoken to your servant.

I am slow of speech and tongue.'" ~ Exodus 4:10 Talking to God could be intimidating. Talking with God could strike even greater fear in your heart. Little wonder that Moses, when approaching God, became a nervous wreck. He stammered. He stuttered. He excused himself as ineloquent, unable to put two sentences together without stumbling.

Some Christians find it easier to talk to God than with Him. But prayer is cultivating a relationship with the Lord of the universe. Prayer is holding a conversation with Him, sharing your hopes, dreams, and affections, as well as listening to His hopes and affections. That we can talk with God is truly astounding.

If you have a desire to talk with God, you are already halfway there, because if you pay attention to those desires, your prayer life will be a conversation with your Savior and Lord. Talking with God is not first and foremost petitioning, or finding answers or getting things...talking with Him is a new level of listening to the voice of your Lord.

When you talk with someone, you share your thoughts and ideas and then listen.

You listen to what your friend has to say. The same is true when we talk with God. Pause during your praise and intercession for long moments just to...listen. Wait on the Lord to hear what Scriptures He places on your mind. Focus the ears of your heart on Him, keeping distractions at bay and your wandering mind in check. This is listening. This is talking with the Lord.

How I praise You, Lord, that You desire a two-way communication with

me. Forgive me when I talk at You... and fail to speak to You and then listen.

May my prayer life grow in this way.

With this verse the apostle calls us to take action against anxiety. We tell God exactly what we want. We pray the particulars of our problems. What Jesus said to the blind man, he says to us: “What do you want me to do for you” (Luke 18:41)? One would think the answer would be obvious. When a sightless man requests Jesus’ help, isn’t it apparent what he needs? Yet Jesus wanted to hear the man articulate his specific requests. JDS Creative Academy Celebrates Winning Six Telly Awards JDS Creative Academy (JDSCA) and Spirit of Innovation celebrate their latest accomplishment of winning six Telly Awards. JDSCA, in collaboration with their job-training participants, won two Telly Awards in the category of Diversity and Inclusion for the SOI Update, a weekly news and information program, and for the PSA Seat Belt Safety. Spirit of Innovation won four Tellys in the News Feature category: the Spotlight segment Foodie Destinations, highlights Riverside County as a hotspot for dining; the Voice of Innovation segment Riverside County Jobs Outlook & A.I., looks into what the workforce might be like as technology continues to advance; an Impact Story on Learning Disability Month; and a lookback segment on Notable Women of Temecula, featuring historical women in the

Temecula Valley.

The Telly Awards honor excellence in video and television across all screens and is judged by leaders from video platforms such as television, streaming networks and production companies, and includes executives from Dow Jones, Duplass Brothers Productions, Complex Networks, A&E Networks, Hearst Media, ESPN Films, RYOT, Vice+ and Vimeo. The Tellys attract creators from all over the globe and announced that just this year alone, more than 13,000 entries were submitted from all 50 states and five continents. JDSCA was exhilarated to hear that their job-training SOI crew, which consists of adults with autism and developmental disabilities, were noticed since they work extremely hard to stand out in the professional world.

Aryn Porras, pre-apprentice and a job-training participant, shared her thoughts on winning this Telly. “It’s shocking! It left me speechless to hear that our studio had won awards for six of our entries. It is a huge achievement! I’m really proud of all of us and our hard work,” said Porras.

The team of mentors behind the scenes of the job-training program consists uniquely of industry professionals and apprentices. Spirit Of Innovation, a magazine-style news show for Riverside County is made up of no less than 30 creators from all different backgrounds. The SOI crew worked long days brainstorming, writing, producing, editing and is beyond words to be recognized as a 2020 Telly Winner.

“As a past Telly winner in our full-service production company, I knew what an accomplishment it was to win. When I found out that our job-training news and information show, along with their PSA won too, I was so excited for them! I am very proud of our staff and crew at #JDSFamily,” said Diane Strand, founder of JDS Creative Academy/Executive Producer of Spirit of Innovation.

Shedding light on an overlooked population is a huge part of JDSCA’s mission. Winning six Telly Awards did just that. The accomplishment provided a simple boost in morale for staff and job-training participants and will open doors to new opportunities. The #JDSFamily continues to work in a collaborative effort to keep Riverside County residents In-The-Know with what they Need-To-Know.

Virtual Summer Stay Camp Hosted by City of Temecula Summer Day Camp program goes virtual. Welcome to Temecula’s Summer Stay Camp! This is not just another sit-and-watch program. Campers will have face-to-face interactions with familiar staff and fellow campers during virtual activities, games, and crafts.

All necessary supplies and materials will be shipped to participants’ homes prior to sessions beginning. Parents will simply log campers onto a device using unique Zoom links, hand their camper the Stay Camp supply box, and camp staff will take care of the rest!

We have maximized interaction for campers and minimized the work for parents. While this program does not replace childcare, it will offer unique experiences for children to socialize and keep busy for a few hours each weekday.

Temecula Community Services President and City Council Member Zak Schwank commented, “We know many students in our community have missed out on interactivity and engagement over the past few months since implementing distance learning. Temecula’s Community Services Department is dedicated to engaging with our youth through the upcoming summer months by offering fun and enriching activities to keep them active, productive, and entertained.”

The Summer Stay Camp program is for children (ages 6 to 9) and will take place Monday through Friday from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm. Preregistration is required and a two-week session costs $60 per child.

I’ve Got the Gum Stuck to My Shoes Blues

By Professor Kidsbrary The other day I was skipping along, Counting cracks in the sidewalk and singing a song, Just enjoying myself and the sun-shiny day Not a care in the world…things were going my way When all of a sudden, more sticky than glue, I stepped on some gum that stuck to my shoe, And try as I might, to make it come free Gripping like a claw it wouldn’t budge for me!

But that wasn’t all, you see, my friend, From bad to worse—this just wouldn’t end, As I continued down the street The gum now stuck to both my feet!

Now walking home Would take much skill, I couldn’t walk normal…

So, I hopped… uphill!

And if you think this story’s done, Well, you’d be wrong—it’s just begun, Because this gum was super strong, It picked up things…as I went along!

First an old sweater with one big hole, Was dragging, not lagging, now stuck to one sole I really could not believe my fate…

As my other foot grabbed a roller skate!

So, of course, I started to pick up speed, “Oh great,” I thought, “This is all I need!”

Racing up a hill I now reached the top, Like a skier in mid-air there was no way to stop!

How to Clean Up Your Old Posts and Photos on Facebook

By Nellie Hathorn Social Media platforms have evolved and have become more and more about the moment—what you're doing now, what's happening now, rather than what you were doing five years ago. While looking back through old photos and posts, Facebook has a "Memories" reminder so you can reminisce heart-warming moments from years ago on the same day. It might give you a buzz of nostalgia, while other comments or photo memories can be no longer relevant, painful and/or embarrassing. If your social media life spans more than a few years, you might not want friends, family, colleagues or prospective employers looking back on the sort of person you used to be or the things you used to do. Here are a few tips to clean up your Facebook Account.

Tip 1. It's always a good idea to make sure your Facebook Profile Setting for sharing posts should be either set to "Friends" or a "Specific Group" (in a list you have made) and preferably not to "Public" unless you are a business, public personality or just don't mind anyone on Facebook being able to see and read all your posts and see all your photos.

Tip 2. This could also be a good time and remove people from your Friend List you don't want to hear from anymore. You can Delete them entirely (they don't get a notification", you can "Unfollow" them on their profile page or you can even "Mute" them.

Don't be afraid to freshen up your Newsfeed with People, Pages, Groups and things that bring you joy, connections and current events. I'll give you a another tip, make sure you check the sources of your information before you go sharing a post and end up with egg on your face.

Tip 3. It's really good to "Hide" your friend list if you haven't already. That way a random Facebooker, or a friend of a friend, etc...can't view your entire friend list. This helps keep your friends privacy and helps guard them from unwanted friend requests or unsolicited messages, which can sometimes be troublesome.

Tip 4. Before you get started, don't forget you have the option of backing up your posts first on Facebook. If you visit the Facebook help center, Click on "Managing Your Account", then "Accessing & Downloading Your Information" You will also find other helpful FAQ's in the same menu. There's always a Question Mark Icon for your use, in between the Down Arrow and to the right of the Bell Icon, on the top right.

Tip 5. On your phones, in the apps for Android and IOS, while in Facebook tap your avatar picture (top left), then tap the three dots and choose "Activity Log". From here pick "Manage Activity" and "Your Posts" to see everything you've ever posted. (You can use the Filters button to limit what's shown onscreen).

Use the tick boxes on the left to select the posts you want to manage, then you've got two options: "Archive" hides the posts from everyone else on Facebook except you, while "Recycle bin or Trash" deletes the posts but allows you to recover them up 30 days. To Trash/Delete them before those 30 days are up, "tap Recycle Bin" on the same screen, select the posts, and tap the trash icon (you can also use the "Restore" button to bring them back).

On the web, open your profile, then click "Manage Posts" under the status update box. You can then search through your posts (filtering them if needed, Photos, Videos, Likes, Comments, etc.) Select the one you want to remove, click the Pencil Icon and you can delete it.. Done. Great job with your new and improved security checks and cleaner Facebook feed.

Pets are Wonderful Support: Preparing for what comes after “Shelter with our Pets in Place”

Having a pet during the best of times can bring us joy, and now more than ever, our furry family members offer a variety of health and emotional benefits like increased fitness and lowered stress. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), along with companionship and enjoyment, studies have shown that the bond between people and their pets can decrease blood pressure, cholesterol and triglyceride levels as well as decrease feelings of loneliness and increase opportunities for exercise, outdoor activities and socialization (well, at a safe disPet Paws Gracyn with Minnie & Tink tance!).

These benefits and the unconditional love we share with our pets are even more apparent now, and fortunately there is no evidence that domestic pets can transmit the new coronavirus that causes COVID-19. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the virus is not spread pet-to-person. With so many people at home around the clock, there has never been a better time to foster or adopt a new pet to be your “social distancing sidekick.” Shelters and rescues groups have seen unprecedented adoptions and fostering as people have the time to add a family member and help them adapt to their new environment.

We adore our pets, they are part of our family, and knowing what they need during stressful times is important. Keep in mind that your pet is going to feel your stress, and just as you need to be relaxed and calm around your kids, the same should be done with your furry best friend. They may seem needy or show signs of anxiety. They may seem to be acting out, but they may only be reacting to you. This is when understanding ways to enjoy simple things like walks, playing fetch, having doggie spa days at home, petting/playing with them, and talking to them in an upbeat voice is as vital as ever.

Keeping things as light as possible can help you both – you can even look to them for some comic relief -- they are funny and don’t even know it! Try to take videos and share with your friends. Whether it’s your own pet or you see a cute or funny animal video, this is the time to positively connect with others and bring a smile to their faces.

And when you’re on a zoom call (even work-related), think about including your pet; they can provide a little relief from the daily work routine.

Remember these recent lifestyle changes shouldn’t mean that your pets should go without the necessary veterinary care, high-quality nutrition, CBD supplements for pain and anxiety, regular exercise and more. Vet clinics are providing curbside service where they will come to your car and take your pet into the clinic or bring medications out to you.

As we move through the phases of getting back to work and life, there will be an adjustment for your pets – whether it’s a new one who only knows this recent lifestyle – or a pet you’ve had for a while, they are used to having you around all of the time. To make the transition easier, try leaving for short periods of time so they get used to you coming and going. Try exercising them before you leave so they will be less anxious and hopefully will take a nap! Make sure you don’t leave things around that they may chew if they get bored. Think of where you may have them stay while you’re away. Try to be patient with them and consider they need to adjust to their new normal.

Start preparing pets now Easing pets into spending less time with you now may help alleviate separation anxiety which can become an issue if the change is too abrupt. Signs of this include barking, howling, whining, panting, drooling, scratching doors and windows, and tearing things apart. If your pets are used to constant attention and suddenly it goes away, it may cause them to panic. Start slowly, reminding them what it’s like to be left alone for parts of the day by leaving for short periods of time. This may desensitize them to your absences. Animal trainers recommend not making a big deal out of leaving or returning

home. You can even set up a camera (WyzeCam for under $40) where you can watch them on your smartphone while you’re away. You can see if they seem upset just because you’re not there or are there outside things triggering a reaction such as noise from a leaf blower or delivery truck? If so, creating positive experiences when these things happen, like giving treats or playing with them may help to lessen this behavior.

Having a set schedule now can also help pets adjust when you go back to work.

Getting up at a regular time, feeding and exercising at the the same time and providing time for them to rest alone is helpful. Making the process of leaving the house relaxing for pets is important, try putting on some soft music and don’t make a big deal when you say goodbye to them or when you come home.

If pets seem agitated when you do things like putting on your shoes, try putting them on when you don’t actually plan to leave and they will get used to it. Checking in on them, either by webcam or hiring a dog walker or pet sitter could be an option. In severe cases of separation anxiety, you may consider consulting your veterinarian.

The important thing to reminder is all of us are adjusting, including our pets. It’s up to us to help them through it, just like they are always there for us during the good – and the trying times in life.

“This grant allows us to continue our lifesaving work by helping us Save the Pets program, which is central to our organization’s mission as we serve our community” said Monica Wylie. “In this uncertain time, our goal will be to save as many dogs and cats as we were on track to save prior to the pandemic. We are grateful to our community for their support and appreciate the help from Best Friends Animal Society in making Save the pets possible.”

Animal Friends of the Valleys is an active partner in the Best Friends Network, which offers resources and support to fellow shelters, rescue groups, and animal welfare organizations across the country.

“When you choose to foster or adopt your next pet, you are becoming part of the solution right here in our community,” said Wylie. “And community is more important than ever right now.”
