Th e House that Cri ed Can dy By Professor Kidsbrary It was all Hollow’s Eve which meant Halloween, A time to wear costumes, to laugh and be seen From pirates to princesses, superheroes or ghost, Or whatever you wanted… to be the most! There were parties at school with cider and cake, Spider cookies and treats moms would make… The kids all carved pumpkins, some happy, some scary, Then a costume parade, to have fun and be merry! But later that evening their excitement would soar, It was “Trick or Treat” time, to go door to door, When it became dark, they would walk down the street They must find every house, that gave candy to eat! With flashlights and friends, their parents would go Along for the fun, to each house in the row, Every door the kids knocked on, they’d yell “Trick or Treat” Say “thank you” for the candy… then run with fast feet! From one house to the next, they would race each other Laughing and shouting, trying to beat one another, Until they reached there last stop for the night, This place was so quiet…they couldn’t bare the sight!
You see, all this time an old man lived there, Every night on his porch, he would rock in his chair He had a black cat, that would sit with him… The old man looked sad, and the cat looked quite grim! He once had grandchildren that would come and play, With the other children on the street until they moved away, The old man now lonely, with no family or wealth, Pulled down his blinds to live alone with himself… His house needed painting, the roof major repair, The weeds tall as trees, looked like nobody cared With little money to fix things and not very strong, It was all he could do… just to manage this long. Then one little girl staring… just started to cry, Her tears kept on gushing out of each eye! Then one by one all the children cried too, As parent’s looked on, wondering what they could do? Now what happened next seems impossible to share, But I heard it from someone that said they were there, The big gray house with the blinds pulled down inside, Lifted up magically… then the windows opened wide!
At that very moment the dark house grew bright, Every room big or small had its own light! The house started crying, the children really did care… As huge tears of candy, seem to flow from everywhere! There was no stopping it now, as the candy poured out, From every window and door and even the rain spout! The house was crying candy! The old man came to see, With all the children on his lawn, both were happy as could be! The house had missed the kids too, and wanted them to know, How much it longed to see their faces, smiling and a glow! Next the neighbors of the town, had a meeting would decide, To fix the old man’s house for free, so he could feel pride! The house turned out beautiful, the best lawn in town to play, As the old man sat with his cat to watch the children every day! And so, as legend has it on every Hallows Eve… Find “The house that cried candy” and you too will believe! The End
