SHINPURU* DESIGN PORTFOLIO

TO BE IRREPLACEBABLE ONE MUST ALWAYS BE

“different ”

First of all, big welcomes to the first full length of shinpuru’s design portfolio series. Putting this book together has been a long, arduous and in certain instances an quiet intoxicating experience for me. Because I do not have a clue how to go about representing myself as a designer; yet after many nights of decisions, tortures and refinements I decided to keep this book nice and simple.

The inspiration of designing this book came from my tutor Katrina Sandbach. She says as designer we are suppose to represents ourselves in an interesting way. Supposedly I came up with the idea of making a series of portfolio book where each year it will represent my growth and journey as an visual communicator.

In case you did not know, the name Shinpuru derived from a Japanese word meaning “Simplicity” or to be simple. Whereas, the Shinpuru logo depicting a love heart place at the center of a speech bubble was designed to tell everyone that we are a special studio that caters our clients with much love and care. Finally in this book you will discover that there are no rationale next to my photographed pictures because I believe that a picture speak 1000 words. However, if you disagree with me; there are references and rationales at the end of this book. Overall, I hoped you’ll enjoy everything I’ve included here.

Michelle Rusli a passionate young graphic designer with a unique balance of creative and technical expertise, coupled with a strong background in prints and web design. Her style of design has been called many things. Refined. Professional. Uncluttered. Elegant. Simple in the best of ways. Her favourite description to date is “sophisticated, but with an edge.” She thinks that sums it up very well. Anything more specific would change from project to project. Over the years, Michelle’s has worked for a number of

small design organizations in Indonesia and Australia, but she is keen to expand her career overseas. Michelle’s interest lies in publication design, but she is motivated to learn anything and everything as long as it is design related. Her enthusiasm to learn, practice, and grow makes her a serious designer who is continuously aiming to improve our world and the lives of the people who share it.

COVER The front cover of this book is designed in correspondence with the Shinpuru’s logo.

Everytime I see this quote, I was con antly challenged to come up creativily unique designs-. So that I would always be favoured among millions of graphic designers out there

I included this photo on the very fir page of my book, because I though this place really inspires me, to own my very own graphic design udio that is modern, fun and relaxing.

PAGE 6&7 This photo was taken to depict that there are two different aspects of Michelle Rusli. Which in one perspectives they miglt look like the same person. Yet internally they maybe very different.

The same goes for graphic designers. The effort we put into our work is illusional until the time somebody uses it and appreciates it thats when it becomes an promising reality for us

PAGE 8&9 The Happy Buddha was taken for a photomedia project in 2007. The brief askes us to take 4 different photos which is to be developed by myself in the dark room

A photographer use to always tell me that a beautiful photo is taken without any paticular reason behind it and we shall not think too much of how the image will look like at the end. So why not leave it as a surprise? and this is the surprise I got from my SLR camera

Page 10&11 This photo was part of the photomedia project i had to take in 2007 and once again the image was developed by myself in the darkroom

In this picture I did not want to think too much about what i want the image to look like at the end. But I did know that I wanted to shoot an achitectural building that looks unique or different.

page 12&13 This image was taken for one of the design classes I took in unversity. The brief askes us to take a photo of an paticular place that has evolved into an modern region

When I thought of the word “modernity I immediately thought of coming to the city to take this shot because their are always tall modern buildings there.

Page 14&15 This Photo was taken for an online competition in 2008. The brief was to shoot an round or eclipse shaped object of any colour and size

Unexpectedly I came across this gigantic ferris wheel in Darling harbour and I immediately took a photo of it in time for the online competiton. and the design was supposed to depict the vintage yle of art taking over our modern world

Page 16&17 This photo was taken for an health and fitness article for the cu omise magazine

I wanted to take an ab ract photo of an swimming pool and then reinterpret it, So that it looks like somekind of an human eye aring at the audience. Hence, what I’m trying to potray in this picture is that for us to live an healtier life yle one mu always think before they act.

page 18&19 This was the second photo taken for the cu omise magazine. The image deliver a very simple message to everyone who needs to adapt a newer way of living in the modern world

Using the help of camera angles I tried to potray the concept of riving forward with a postitive mind through the use of rong diagonal lines that help leads the viewers eyes from one point to another

Page 20&21 This was the la image taken for the cu omise magazine. This image was shot also in The peak apartments

This image was a combination of the two images we saw earlier. The legs in the image was used to tell everyone that we mu have a positive mind, an eye for detail and enough exercise per day if we want to maintain our healty life yles

Page 22&23 This photo was taken for an photo media class. I was ask to take a photo of an person using only the natural source of light

I decided to take a photo of my korean friend “Min Jae Lee. I wanted to use the rong sun light coming from the front to show that she is happy and that she is also enjoying the beautiful scenery is Botany bay

page 24&25 This image was taken for an po er advertisement in Indonesia. The brief askes us to notify everyone that there will be a light exhibition coming up in Jakarta

Back cover Finally thanks for reading my portfolio book. I hoped that I haved inspired you in some way. If not please forward your suggestion to shinpuru@gmail.com thank you

For this brief, I wanted to use an array of colours to attract the viewers attention. That is why I’ve used a spectrum of bright colours running vertically across the po er.
