EDITOR’S NOTE

A CLEAN SLATE Instead of finding a “resolution” for the upcoming year, I much prefer to set goals. For 2017, I have a range of goals big and small. Being able to cross these things off a list gives me an incredible sense of accomplishment. It also gives me something to work toward throughout the year. My family likes to make a bucket list for the year in January and post it on the fridge. Last year, for example, they put finding a new house and visiting their best friends in California on the list. (Both things we checked off in 2016!) I love seeing the things my kids want to do, and it’s always fun to look back at the lists as the kids get older. One of my additions to that list is organizing my pantry, and luckily for me, we have some great tips for simplifying your life this month in our Home & Garden article on page 34. It has inspired me to clean out my pantry, get some labels, and colorize everything! We at SIMPLYkc Magazine are wishing you all a wonderful new year. Here’s to starting fresh!

Melanie’s Must Haves Get It Together: All Things Organization! The new year always inspires me to clean out and organize my entire house. I also recently read The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing by Marie Kondo, which has led me to dig into places I haven’t touched in years (kids’ artwork, books, photos, and my many jewelry boxes). If you are feeling overwhelmed, take some inspiration from the ladies at The Home Edit — all organizing experts who make any nook and cranny of your home look good. With containers and tools from The Container store, you can tackle your organization projects with ease! You can find them at thehomeedit.com and on Instagram @the_home_edit

Keep all of your dry goods in your pantry neat using Good Grips 4-in. square POP canisters by OXO ($7.99–$14.99)

For jewelry, makeup, and accessories, clear acrylic boxes help keep small pieces contained while still letting you see what’s inside. (Luxe Acrylic Modular System: $11.99–$36.99 and clear box with brushed gold lids: $4.99–$12.99)

Keeping shoes in the box from the store makes it impossible to keep them organized. Clear shoe boxes stack with ease and let you see what’s inside! (Our Shoe Box: $1.89 each)

The desk or miscellaneous drawer is always the hardest to tackle. This modular set efficiently divides and conquers desk drawer clutter. (Metal Drawer Organizers: $14.99 each)

For the closet, velvet hangers are a must! The nonslip finish prevents clothing from slipping off and protects delicate garments. (Black Huggable Hangers by Joy Mangano: $8.99)

For storage on shelves, contain items in the water hyacinth storage cubes with handles. ($12.99–$19.99 each)

croft can run by your voice command. But that doesn’t mean your home must run on smart technology; Mycroft can perform all the functions a smartphone can do: Post to Facebook, set an alarm, do math problems, or tell knock-knock jokes, all by the sound of your voice. Artificial intelligence is a booming technology in homes. Mycroft can be easily as smart as you design it to be.

Kansas City is a pioneer town. Just ask Sprint, Hallmark, Garmin, Cerner, or H&R Block. But Kansas City isn’t done — there are more companies digging their roots here. The reason? We don’t carry the financial burdens you find on the coasts and the technology ecosystem is already in place. If you believe innovation begins in Silicon Valley, you’re already behind on the technology. The next booming tech town is right here in Kansas City. The following start-up technology companies are becoming household names:

PERFECT CUBE | perfectcube.co Owning a small business is not as simple as scooping gelato for a customer behind a counter. If you don’t have the tools to study your business’s data analytics, you could be missing out on a competitive edge. Mark Calhoun and Jim Starcev developed Perfect Cube for small-business owners. When Calhoun and Starcev opened their gelato shop, they were frustrated with the lack of data analytics that, at the time, only Microsoft Excel could give. The two created Perfect Cube — a service developed for small-business owners to have access to “big data for small retail.” The month-to month service tracks metrics such as average daily transactions and gives clarity to year-to-date sales. The software can also predict future sales. With this much detailed data, small business owners can boost sales and lower the cost of labor and production.

Fantasy football fans — grab your smartphone. Like many men in Kansas City, Ilya Tabakh, CEO of Edge Up Sports, realized after 10 years of playing fantasy football that he needed an easier way to study his fantasy team players. Managing a fantasy football team is all about strategy. Realistically, anyone who plays fantasy football has a life they must balance. One of the biggest challenges is injury reports and finding replacement players. Edge Up Sports takes every football players’ stats and related news articles and then “geeks out with tech analyzation” to bring you easy-to-view team and player insights in one app. Edge Up Sports even partnered with the University of Kansas Hospital, a leader in sports medicine, to help understand sports health in order to give you an edge up in fantasy football.

account, and Chipotle’s online ordering? Nearly everything on the internet requires a password and hackers are breaking the codes every day. It can be hard to memorize. Eye Verify is the creator of Eyeprint ID. Eyeprint ID is making memorization of passwords a thing of the past. Identification can be made using your “eyeprint.” Financial-service companies are already using Eyeprint ID. Account owners use a smartphone camera and their own eye to gain access to financial mobile apps. The technology will work with contacts, makeup, glasses, allergies, red eye, and bright and low light. It reads your eye by pattern-matching the blood vessels in the whites and other micro features in and around your eye, making stolen identities and fraud nearly impossible.

FITBARK | fitbark.com Did you know the golden retriever enjoys the highest quality of sleep of all the dog breeds? A Kansas City-based company has created a health-tracking app for your furry friend, which also anonymously contributes health and lifestyle data that helps all dogs live healthier lives. The activity and sleep monitor sends insights to your smartphone about your dog’s health. This small device, placed on a collar, can provide insight to your dog’s behavior and be of use to your veterinarian. The monitor is rugged and waterproof to help track even the most active dog’s activity level. The FitBark is has a battery life up to 14 days.

Dr. Darin Upchurch of MaxLife Weight Loss & Body Balancing has created a system that helps people regain their health naturally.

MAXLIFE: BRINGING BALANCE BACK TO HEALTH Dr. Darin Upchurch of Overland Park’s MaxLife Weight Loss & Body Balancing has combined technology with natural healing — and has plenty of success stories and patient testimonies to share. He has created a system that helps people regain their health in a natural way, and it seems to be working. Whether young or old, patients at MaxLife are rebalancing their physiological system, losing

14

weight, and gaining back their health and wellness. “The technology and program is totally unique to us,” says Heather Klepfer, chief wellness officer, referring to the maximized technology scan. “There are no chemicals or drugs. No blood work. No urine testing. It’s totally customized to the patient based on technology, and will reset hormones, metabolism, adrenal glands, and your hypothalamus; detox on the cellular level; and rebalance your body. It’s truly a complete internal reset.” And, it works for everybody. One stereotype that MaxLife Body’s program is chinking away at is that thin people are healthier than overweight people. Often, a person doesn’t even know she’s nutritionally deficient or in some

other way losing her health. That’s where MaxLife’s unique technology comes in. Through the body scan, the team learns where you are out of balance and which specific foods are most beneficial — and most harmful — to you. “Basically, the idea that you should eat healthy foods and avoid unhealthy foods isn’t helpful. For each person there are different foods that are beneficial,” Heather says. “I love kale, and then I learned that my body doesn’t digest kale properly. That doesn’t make kale an unhealthy food. It just means that it’s not beneficial for me.” During the 30-day program, you receive a list of foods that are beneficial or might hinder digestion, in addition to nutritional supplementation. You

energy. Soon, you might even be able to stop taking medications. “Doing MaxLife’s program is one of the best decisions I’ve ever made,” says Roni Birkhofer. “I was at a breaking point when I decided to start the program, to start taking steps to improve my health. I’ve lost 29 pounds and reduced my metabolic age by 23 years. And I feel awesome. I love the extra energy.”

also will cut out processed foods, sugar, and other foods that typically cause inflammation in the body. Can the program benefit healthy people? They say yes for a myriad of reasons, not just because most people — “even the healthiest, cleanest patients,” Klepfer says — are living in a state of inflammation due to eating the wrong foods. “And inflammation is the root of so many health issues,” she notes.

Other reasons why people of all ages, sizes, and shapes can benefit from the program are because our environment is full of toxins, our foods are overly processed and/or grown in a way that leaves them nutritionally insufficient, we experience stress almost daily, and more. You can expect to see results quickly — most within just a few days. You’ll begin to sleep better and have increased

“ I love kale, and then I learned that my body doesn’t digest kale properly. That doesn’t make kale an unhealthy food. It just means that it’s not beneficial for me.” The program isn’t just about weight loss, Klepfer stresses, although it will happen. She says it’s about regaining your health. “So many people ask us how to stay healthy and balanced throughout the year, so we designed a unique Balance For Life program,” Klepfer shares. This program allows you to maintain your health and weight using MaxLife’s exclusive technology as a tool on a quarterly basis. The technology generates a comprehensive report, giving you a blueprint for success for the next three months — and beyond — keeping your health and metabolism positively working for you. The support doesn’t end after you’ve finished the program. MaxLife offers an array of services in its Overland Park office for participants. “For lasting results, we understand people need support,” Klepfer says. “Nobody should feel alone — we make ourselves available.” MaxLife is located at 11010 Quivira Road in Overland Park. Hello, Kansas City! Dear Kacie is a new monthly column dedicated to bringing you no-sugar-coating advice about everything from fears, relationship troubles, and fashion advice to what to do in this great city and more. kids go to the same school. She is always wanting to go to lunch and hang out, but I am just no longer interested. Do I keep making excuses, tell her how I feel, or just put on a game face and act like everything is fine?

Relationships should be mutually beneficial for both people involved, and if it’s not beneficial for you, it’s probably time to move on. Many friendships can end on their own simply by letting them fade away. Distancing yourself or not being as available are both good ways to help that process take place. However, if your friend is asking why you aren’t as available, then it’s time to have a conversation. In this situation, never blame the friend for why the friendship is ending. Think of the “it’s not you, it’s me” scenario. Explain to your friend that you simply don’t have time to devote to the friendship anymore. You definitely shouldn’t take any of these options lightly. Oftentimes, once you decide to have a conversation, there’s no going back. Your friend will understandably be hurt, but if the friendship isn’t providing you with the support you need or if it’s frankly just not the type of friendship you want in your life, it’s time to make decisions that take your well-being into account.

OVERLAND PARK WELCOMES WAXING THE CITY How does a long-time pharmaceutical representative become interested in the waxing business? When personal needs meet opportunity, a business is born. Entering menopause was tough on Kristen Jumps, owner of Waxing the City in Overland Park. With fluctuating hormones, her body, mind, and spirit changed. She became wrought with anxiety. Depression set in. Black, coarse hair started to grow on her face.

After experiencing the benefits of waxing, Kristin Jumps learned that it’s an exfoliating process that lifts dead skin cells as it removes hair, creating a beautiful glow to the skin. So when a friend introduced Jumps to waxing, she became hooked. With consistent waxing, her hair started growing in slower and softer. Finally, she thought, a real solution to one of her many menopausal symptoms. It’s an age-old concept that a business becomes successful because it creates value or meets a need for its target market. Although most young people choose to wax as a lifestyle because the results are remarkably better than shaving, Jumps started waxing because of hormonal changes. Electrolysis was painful,

expensive, and ineffective, and shaving only made things worse. After experiencing the benefits of waxing on her face, she quickly moved to her legs and underarms. Her skin never felt so smooth and healthy. She learned that waxing is an exfoliating process that lifts dead skin cells as it removes hair, creating a beautiful glow to the skin.

The wax used at Waxing the City is exclusively formulated in Spain. It contains antioxidants and healing properties to decrease discomfort while leaving skin feeling wonderfully smooth and healthy. The biggest benefits from waxing are threefold: Skin becomes healthier due to the exfoliation process, waxing lasts a long time, and new hair regrowth is softer and finer.

One day, Jumps Male and female read an article athletes alike find about a young huge benefits from aesthetician who waxing, particularly founded Waxing the cyclists, body builders, City with three others runners, and swimin Denver. I SAID SO...

TATTED UP You were built inside a woman. Her body made your bones, two sets of teeth, organs, and your skin.

and my siblings and I had a reputation of sending babysitters home — never to be seen again.

… Wait, I think I heard somewhere that your skin is an organ. I should Google that. ...

I’m guessing from my dad’s reaction he would have said no to a tattoo request. I’ve never asked my dad why he’s against tattoos or piercings. I’m guessing he doesn’t want us to regret it later in life. Maybe he fears an infection. But, knowing my dad, he most likely thinks we’ll look like drunk pirates on the high seas with a bottle of rum.

My point is that parents tend to take ownership over you because you are an extension of them. And they should take ownership over you, up to a certain age. Parents must teach their young how to survive in this world. When you become a parent, you become a teacher. Sometimes parents have all the answers. Sometimes they don’t. When there isn’t an answer, the response is always, “Because I said so.” It’s not necessarily a good explanation but it works. OK, sometimes it works. “Dad, can I get my belly button pierced?” “No.” “But why?” “Because I said so.” I got my belly button pierced anyway. I was in high school. My dad found out a few weeks later. I don’t remember how he found out but thinking back, it was probably from my sister. My dad chased me around the house, trying to rip the piercing out. She stood in the corner and watched. She was elated because watching a sibling get in trouble put a halo on her head. My dad never got the belly button ring out. He calmed down. He’s not a violent father. But he is a father of four,

I always did like Captain Morgan. Other than a few piercings, no one in my family or my husband’s family has body modifications. Until a couple months ago, that is. That’s when Scott got his first tattoo. He’s talked about getting one for years. Not only did he get his first tattoo, he got a half sleeve. He booked the tattoo appointment forever ago. The tattoo took seven hours, and it’s not even done yet. He will go back to finish it after the first section has healed. Scott didn’t ask permission from his parents. They didn’t even know about the tattoo until the pictures showed up on their phone. They said they are happy Scott is happy. It’s possible they are the parents who got to the age when they don’t care anymore. As for me, I’m planning on getting an anchor tattoo on the inside of my forearm. It will represent my love for fishing beside Scott. Fishing on the high seas with a bottle of rum. Because I said so, Dad.

care within a desired network. In addition to whatever insurance plan they may have, patients who opt for a concierge physician pay an annual fee, or retainer, in return for the 24/7 physician access. Fees range anywhere from $1,200 to $3,000 yearly and serve as a supplement for those services not covered by Medicare or private insurance. According to Direct Primary Care Consumer Guide: Closing the Gap Between Your Doctor, Your Health & Your Wallet, a traditional practice may have as many as 3,000 to 5,000 patients per physician. Compare that to a typical concierge practice, which has 600 or fewer patients per physician. With fewer people competing for the physician’s time, patients benefit from longer appointments and more personalized care. On the flip side, fewer patients combined with a steady income generated from the annual retainer fees allow physicians to work less, leading to a more satisfying work-life balance.

DIRECT PRIMARY CARE: A SIMILAR BUT SLIGHTLY DIFFERENT APPROACH

Experience the Difference. What makes our Myofascial Release Therapy different? Our expert level practitioners follow the principles of the John F. Barnes approach, originator of Myofascial Release. This approach is safe, gentle, and consistently leads to improvement and healing. Check out our websites to learn more…

Another up-and-coming deviation from the traditional medical practice is direct primary care (DPC). At first glance, concierge medicine and DPC may appear to be the same. In fact, the two terms are sometimes used interchangeably. But the two are distinctly different in some areas. For example, both types of practices deliver the same types of care. Both have fewer patients per physician than a typical medical practice — resulting in greater accessibility and more personalized medical attention. But unlike concierge patients who pay an annual retainer, DPC patients pay a monthly fee averaging $100 a month per person and can opt out at any time. And when it comes to insurance coverage, concierge physicians work with their patients’ insurance plans while DPC physicians do not accept insurance and encourage their patients to choose higher-deductible plans specifically designed for catastrophic illness or injury.

New Year’s Reset: Start the Year Off Organized

January is a time for resolutions and a fresh start. A great way to start fresh is to organize your home. We often think of spring cleaning, but what about New Year’s cleaning? Clearing out clutter is a great way to get and feel organized, says Liz Allen, owner of Simple Life Organizing LLC (simplelifeorganizing. org). “When you walk in your home and your counters are full of stuff, it’s hard not to feel down and out of control,” she explains. “The tip I live my life by is to constantly de-clutter. Don’t bring more into your home than you are taking out.”

Erin Samborski, project manager at Organizing-Etc. (organizing-etc. com), also offers some suggestions for getting organized in 2017.

PARE DOWN THE PAPER •G eneral paperwork: Compile all important papers, such as bills and medical paperwork, that you collected throughout the previous year. Determine what needs to

be kept and referenced at a later time and what can be shredded (especially if it is easily accessed online). “We recommend an action box for paper management,” Samborski says. “It’s a great tool to start the year off right.” An action box is a file system that is placed in the area where you usually open mail and empty backpacks. The papers are sorted and immecont. on page 36

diately put into the file folders instead of tossed onto tabletop surfaces. •K ids’ school paperwork: Go through the papers and artwork you’ve collected since the beginning of the year and determine what you want to keep in longterm memorabilia storage, what you want kept within arm’s reach and accessed throughout the year, and what can be thrown away. If you find yourself having trouble throwing things away, take a picture of it to keep digitally. •T ax-prep paperwork: Save yourself some stress later on and start gathering tax paperwork early. Experts suggest keeping documents for three years from the date you filed your original tax return. If you already have a system arranged, remove documentation for the 2016 tax season. Check out H&R Block’s “Handy, Printable Tax Prep Checklist” to help you start a new system. •M anuals and warranties: If you already have a bin or folder for storing these, toss or recycle manuals and warranties for any items you no longer own. Otherwise, designate a location to store the ones you collected from holiday gifts for easy reference.

UPDATE YOUR ADDRESS BOOK

If you sent out holiday cards, this is the perfect time to start a computerized address book or — if you prefer handwritten — buy a shiny new address book and transfer information. Gather all of the holiday cards you received and double-check addresses. Don’t forget to add phone numbers and email addresses, too.

| SIMPLYKCMAG.COM

DONATE UNWANTED HOLIDAY DECORATIONS

Take inventory of holiday items as you are putting them away in January. If there is an item you didn’t use this year (and especially last year), consider donating it to lessen the clutter. Don’t forget to add unwanted holiday gifts to the donation box. “We’re big on getting rid of the clutter and donating or selling items,” Samborski explains. “If you haven’t used an item for more than one holiday in a row, you’re probably not going to.”

MANAGE THE MEDICINE CABINET

Breeze through the medicine cabinet and collect unused or expired prescription medicines to be disposed of through a drug take-back program. If there are no conveniently located sites, check with your local pharmacy.

CLEAN OUT YOUR CLOSETS

Do a quick closet run-through and decide what to keep and what to donate. If you were to go shopping today and wouldn’t purchase the item, or you haven’t worn it in six months, let it go. If it’s too hard to let an item go, consider setting certain items aside in a bin out of the way (such as in a basement or attic). If you don’t go looking for an item for six months, then it’s time to get rid of it! “De-cluttering and organizing your home is contagious and basically, it just feels great,” Allen sums up. “It can be easy to maintain once you get started, but there is always a professional organizer close who can help when you are feeling overwhelmed!”

YOU… ONLY BETTER: WEIGHT-LOSS WONDERLAND Imagine if you could find a one-stop shop for all your weight-loss needs. This magical place would offer cutting-edge techniques such as HCG and endermologie. It would be run by an educated staff that completely understands each technique and can help you make informed decisions about what works best for your lifestyle and budget. Look no further. You…Only Better is owned and operated by Laurie Black, an expert who’s been in the weight-loss/aesthetics business for more than 23 years. Specializing in laser hair removal, chemical peels, cellulite removal, cosmetic surgery, and microdermabrasions, she was one of the pioneers in this new, untapped market. “We’re a small boutique-style weight loss center focusing on good service,” Black says. “We were once a very large office, seeing 300-plus people a day. We would have 30 people sitting in the lobby, and I didn’t like looking out and not knowing one person, or being able to ensure that these people were provided with superlative service. I hired people that I would not have hired if we didn’t have so many customers. So, we downsized back to a small-business model where I knew 99 percent of the cus-

tomers, the majority of whom have been coming in for decades.”

“ Colonics have proven to help people with headaches, body aches, and general feelings of malaise. People tell us their acne has cleared up, their energy has increased, and many say colon hydrotherapy has changed their lives.” Black says You...Only Better was one of the first in the country to offer

HCG, and worked hard to perfect the weight-loss results. The clinic also has been offering colon hydrotherapy for more than 10 years, a therapy that has been increasing in popularity recently.

long,” she says. “Many new treatment modalities have been introduced over the years, but people always come back for their endermologie.”

“This year, we plan to add an additional colon hydrotherapy machine to accommodate the growing interest,” Black explains. ”In addition to relieving constipation, colonics have proven to help people with headaches, body aches, and general feelings of malaise. People tell us their acne has cleared up, their energy has increased, and many say colon hydrotherapy has changed their lives.”

Other services offered at You... Only Better include ultrasonic cavitation, which decreases inches. “People leave with smaller hips or bellies,” Black shares. ”This machine also tightens skin by heating up the tissue under the skin and stimulating collagen. We offer B12 injections to help people with energy, mental clarity, and to ward off colds and flus.”

Another popular service, Black says, is endermologie — a full-body deep-tissue massage that reduces cellulite, tightens skin, and reduces inches all over. It involves massaging, rolling, and sucking at the skin’s surface to stimulate the breakup of stubborn deposits of cellulite. “It has been FDA-approved for almost 30 years, and I’ve had clients for almost that

GOOD TASTES

Written by Lesli Lundquist | Photo by Carmen Carver

s a y p p a H a Clam

Whether you’re feeding out-of-town friends and family or hosting your annual holiday party, spend less time in the kitchen and more time with those you love. This simple ingredient and super-tasty sandwich will certainly feed a hungry crowd. Be sure to add this recipe to your holiday menu this year!

New England Clam Chowder Serves: 6-8

Ingredients

Directions

2 cups frozen potato cubes 1 cup diced onion 1 cup diced celery 1 8-oz. bottle of clam juice 2 6 .5-oz cans of chopped or minced clams 1-1/2sticks butter 1/2 cup flour 1 quart heavy cream (option: substitute with ½ & ½) 1 teaspoon sugar Salt/pepper, to taste

In a large skillet, bring potatoes, onion, celery, bottle of clam juice AND the juices only from the two clam cans to a boil. Be sure the juices cover the vegetables. Turn heat to medium and continue cooking until vegetables are tender. In a small sauce pan, melt butter over medium heat. Stir in the flour using a whisk and cook approximately 2 minutes. Continue stirring with the whisk, add heavy cream, sugar, and salt/pepper. Continue heating until it begins to thicken. Remove from heat. Add clams, butter/cream mixture and vegetables to the crock pot. Heat on low for approximately 2 hours. Serve in a sourdough bread bowl or topped with your favorite cracker. And don’t forget the fresh-cracked pepper! Source: Pam Ruane, Friend

Meet Lesli Lundquist: A passion for cooking? Nope, not really! However, when I was diagnosed with food allergies nearly five years ago, my eyes were opened to all of the wonderful dishes that can be created day to day by simply following a recipe. I have been told that I am a “cook from the pantry” type of food guru. I love to keep my pantry stocked and to cook with the seasons, give my tastes buds a challenge, and of course feed my family delicious, home-cooked meals.

The good news is that the SIDS rate has declined, especially since the “Back to Sleep” campaign began in 1994 — which promotes placing your baby on her back when sleeping. In 2016, the AAP recommended babies be placed in the same room as parents while sleeping — but not the same bed to avoid suffocation. Studies show a 50 percent decrease in SIDS when your baby sleeps in the same room you. Dr. Martin helps shed some light as to why babies do better in the parent’s room. “What I noticed in recent years is the hospital nursery changes. The nursery used to be filled with newborns. baby in mom’s room. If you compare the nursery babies to the babies sleeping in mom’s room, you’ll see the babies in mom’s room moving and making noises. They may even cry out in their sleep,” Dr. Martin shares. “That baby knows — on some unexplained level — that mom is nearby. And that baby is more alert during sleep. You need to keep a level of alertness in the baby while he’s sleeping — not necessarily awake, but just more alert. The babies in the nursery are not as alert because they’re not with their moms.” Reduce the risk of SIDS or any sleep-related death in infants by taking away anything that may suffocate or strangle your baby. Keeping her from getting too warm or too comfortable during sleep also will help reduce to risk of SIDS. “It’s not about making a parent more alert or anxious, it’s about making sure your baby keeps a level of alertness during sleep,” Dr. Martin says. For additional information on SIDS or sleep-related infant deaths, Dr. Martin encourages you to talk to your pediatrician or check out sidsresources.org.

APP OF THE MONTH

PLAY IN THE SNOW WITHOUT GOING OUTSIDE The gist: A Good Snowman Is Hard to Build is super-cute puzzle game that has garnered plenty of design awards since it launched last year. Basically, you’re a monster just trying to build

a snowman. You create snowballs from strips of snow by swiping to roll, then stacking them. But each new garden you visit offers more obstacles, from birdbaths to birdhouses to potted plants. The mind-bending puzzle, charming graphics, and beautiful soundscapes make this one of the best puzzle games of 2016. The game is $4.99 for both iOS and Android.

NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS

you finally may be able to keep

1

USE ALL OF YOUR CHAPSTICK. You know you’re tired of buying five different chapsticks every freakin’ winter, only to find the five you bought last season in your winter coat or bottom of your purse. No. This year will be the year!

2 CASE YOUR HOUSE.

So you can find out how a robber might get into your house should they try. Sure, you’re probably never going to be robbed, but isn’t it better to be safe than sorry?

ACTUALLY START MOPPING YOUR KITCHEN FLOORS … Instead of having your dog clean up the spills for you. Or is that just us? Uhhh … Moving on. TAKE A WALK WITHOUT USING YOUR PHONE. You’ve seen the news reports of ridiculous accidents and self-imposed injuries. Remember when we didn’t have the internet, our contacts, and all the music ever created whenever we wanted? Pretend it’s 1995 and walk with your head held high. TRY SOMETHING OLD. What was your favorite hobby as a kid? Or as a single person? What have you given up because you’ve become too busy? Do it again. No matter what it is — sketching, volunteering, going to the library on Saturday mornings, happy hour — it doesn’t hurt to try just one more time. FINISH READING THAT ONLINE ARTICLE. Ya know, instead of keeping 20 bazillion tabs open for hours only to close them at the end of the work day when it’s time to clock out? Do you have five minutes? That’s all it takes to read the article that just caught your eye. BE EXCELLENT TO EACH OTHER. Be empathetic. Be kind to yourself and others. Reserve judgment. Do everything you can to be better than you were yesterday. We got here the same way and we’ll leave the same way. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.
