PUBLISHER’S NOTE
CH- CH- CHANGES! I love Kansas City’s different seasons. Autumn is in the air! I am looking forward to crisp chilly nights, my windows open with a cool breeze throughout the house, hot apple cider from Louisburg Cider Mill, Chiefs football, snuggles under a warm blanket on cold nights, and the leaves changing. It always reminds me that no matter what is going on in my life, nothing is consistent but change. We can always count on our seasons to change every year, and I look forward to each one. I adore autumn because it leads into the start of the holiday season — my very favorite time of the year! We at SIMPLYkc Magazine are making a lot of changes, too, in the upcoming year. You’ll see new columns, local features, partnerships and lots more exciting additions! We’ll be rolling out some of these fun, new changes in our November issue, and will continue to revamp the magazine throughout the new year. 2017 is the year of a revitalized SIMPLYkc Magazine! Of course, we wouldn’t be able to do this without our faithful readers and advertisers. Thank you, Kansas City, for being such a awesome place to call home! I think we all have a wonderful sense of KC pride living here. Thank you for staying loyal — and cheers to the future!

1859 Jail & Marshal’s Home
THE TRUE SPIRITS OF KANSAS CITY Kansas City has quite the past. This is where the westward pioneer trails began. Railroads crisscross the land. The Kansas City mafia ruled for decades and the Civil War was fought in our backyard. Why wouldn’t we have a few restless spirits? Whether or not you’re a believer, the Kansas City ghost tours will put a chill down your spine. And maybe you’ll learn a history lesson or two.
12
| SIMPLYKCMAG.COM
1859 JAIL & MARSHAL’S HOME 217 N. Main St., Independence, MO Independence, Missouri, is home to a former county jail and marshal’s house, built not long before the Civil War began, giving it the name 1859 Jail and Marshal’s Home. The jail housed 12 prisoners during one of the bloodiest times in Jackson County’s history — the Civil War. Famous prisoners held there include Frank James, brother of Jesse James, and William Clark Quantrill, a leader for the Confederacy. The only way in and out of the jail was through the adjoined marshal’s home. The people in this jail left their stories behind, but maybe they left a little part of the afterlife too. Henry Bugler, a deputy marshal, died in the home after being shot during an attempted prison break in 1866. Paranormal investigators have seen a lot of activity in the room he died in. Another popular spirit is the cell of a prisoner named Tommie, who killed his cellmate just to have a blanket to keep warm. “Tommie is our most active ghost in the jail,” explains Caitlin Eckard, operations manager and archivist of the Jackson County Historical Society.
Sarah Bader-King is the director of public programming and events for the Wornall House. She is used to working with spirits in the home. “The room with the most activity is the dining room,” she says. “It served as the surgery room. Most surgeries were amputations. Sometimes people can smell blood, vomit, or urine in this room. The feeling of being sick is not uncommon during our ghost tours. “But there are happier spirits here, too. We think Eliza Wornall may offer a nurturing presence toward pregnant women because she died here shortly after childbirth. And sometimes we can feel the presence of kids in the children’s room.” Wornall House ghost tours can be booked through the Wornall/Majors House Museums. Paranormal investigations take place Oct. 21–22, 28–29, and Oct. 31 at 10 p.m. and midnight. Tickets are $50 and reservations are required.
SALLIE HOUSE 508 N. 2nd St., Atchison, KS Atchison, Kansas, is the most haunted town in Kansas — and possibly even in the U.S., say some paranormal investigators.
In the late 1800s, Atchison was a transportation hub to the west and, later, a major railroad town. No one has a reason why so many bizarre occurrences happen here. In the city that is just an hour away from Kansas City, one house in particular sparked the interest of the Discovery Channel, A&E, Biography Channel, and the Travel Channel. It’s called the Sallie House. An Atchison physician occupied the house during the turn of the century. One night, a mother brought her ill 6-year-old daughter to the physician. The physician performed abdominal surgery on Sallie before the anesthesia started to work. Sallie died on the table. In 1993, Tony and Debra Pickman rented the home. Violent attacks on Tony occurred out of nowhere. He would wake up with scratches on his chest and welts on his abdomen. The house has been called a gateway to the paranormal. Today, no one lives in the house, but strange things still occur. Cameras don’t always work. Cell phone batteries are drained. Cold spots can be felt in certain rooms. The Sallie House is open for self guided tours every Saturday in October and Oct. 31 from 1–3 and 3–5 p.m. You can buy the $10 ticket from the Atchison Chamber of Commerce.
The 1859 Jail and Marshal’s Home and Museum ghost tours can be booked through the Jackson County Historical Society. Tours are every Friday in October. Tickets are $20 for adults, $15 for kids 7–12. Tours are not recommended for children under 7.
JOHN WORNALL HOUSE 6115 Wornall Rd., Kansas City, MO John Wornall was a farmer and prominent Kansas Citian. In 1843, he purchased 500 acres along the Santa Fe Trail in what is now Brookside. Upon the completion of his new home in 1858, the Wornalls owned what was the edge of the United States. Not long after moving into the home, the Wornalls opened their house to serve as a makeshift hospital for wounded soldiers in the Battle of Westport. John Wornall House

CHANGING THE WAY KANSAS CITY EXERCISES BY BRENNAN HALLOCK Photo / Samantha Levi

surgeon told me he wanted me to quit lifting heavy weights and start rowing and swimming. And there is no better feeling I’ve ever had than rowing.” His newfound love for the sport and support from his wife encouraged him to open a rowing studio. And with the opening of his second location at Town Center in Overland Park, more people are discovering this new fitness trend. Health House has brought the classic sport of rowing into the gym. Rowing dates back centuries — as far back as Ancient Egypt, according to some experts. The sport involves racing, usually as a team, by propelling a boat using oars. Using it as a form of exercise in a gym, though, is a new and exciting fitness opportunity that is gaining popularity.
Health House is not only tapping into the rowing movement, but it is a pioneer of the movement. “Rowing is exploding in popularity everywhere,” he says. “It is the new spinning. Experts and industry analysts project that rowing will replace spinning.” And there is evidence to show Knopke is right — rowing studios have been popping up all over the country since Health House opened its doors in 2013. Despite being a pioneer of rowing, Knopke says Health House is not in the business of exercise. “It’s really not about fitness,” he explains. “We’re a hospitality brand and we want to put you before everybody else. If we do: Mission accomplished. And if you start to look good and improve your body — which you will if you show up — fantastic!” Health House was purposely designed to not look like a gym. Instead,
“ I n one stroke, you use 86% of your body’s muscle mass, rowing is way more efficient. And it doesn’t take nearly the toll on your body.” — Jon Knopke
Knopke modeled it after a modern-day boathouse, featuring minimalistic design and no mirrors, because “mirrors distract people,” he says. Health House has a simple, clean, open feel. This environment encourages you to get to know the people exercising around you and build relationships with them, just as you would in an actual boathouse. Relationships are fundamental to Health House’s culture. “The main focus for us as a company, if you look at our mission statement, is simply the golden rule,” Knopke share. “When I hire people I ask, ‘Do you know what the golden rule is and do you exercise it?’” Knopke believes

HOME & GARDEN HOME
BY BETHANEY WALLACE

KC native Shannon Kilkenny recently bought her first home in Fairway after college graduation.
Market Trends: Millennials Are Buying Homes in Kansas City Since the start of 2016, homes have been selling quickly — very quickly, says real estate agent Laura Timmons-Mena. Within this current seller’s market, homes in the range of $350,000 and below are being listed — then sold — within the day. Sometimes, after only a few hours. Offers are coming in fast, plentiful, and usually above asking price, she notes. These are aspects that not only make it difficult to buy a home, but makes it tricky to list one, even if you know it’s going to sell fast.
16
| SIMPLYKCMAG.COM
“The market has just been really nutty,” Timmons-Mena says. “It makes it a challenge on both sides. If you’re the listing agent, it can be stressful; you kind of have to put together a game plan before you hit the market.” Due to low interest rates and a high demand for living in the area, she says it’s a combined effort that is moving so many homes in Kansas City. Because of this, Timmons-Mena says she and other agents often advise clients to go away
for the weekend after listing their homes. As, in all likelihood, they wouldn’t have much time in it, anyway. “Once a house hits, it’s almost a revolving door of showings,” she says. Often, she arrives with clients to view a house while other potential buyers are inside taking a tour — or outside waiting to do the same. “Everyone works together, regardless of what company you represent,” she says. “We’re all in the same boat.”
Out of her home sales for the year, Timmons-Mena says that about 30 percent have been millennial clients. As a generation that’s defined as born between the early 1980s through the early 2000s, that ages buyers within their 20s on up to their early 30s. A NEW HOME FOR LOCAL WOMAN One of Timmons-Mena’s clients who fits the lower spectrum of that range purchased a house this May. Shannon Kilkenny, who works with the Mid-America chapter of the ALS Association, now lives in her very first cont. on next page

roughly 60 to 70 years ago, but Kilkenny thinks that adds to the charm. Once the home had closed, she got to work remodeling, replacing the carpet with refinished hardwood floors herself. She hired a contractor to remodel a bathroom and remove a wall to help the living room “have a better flow.” Kilkenny says she worked with designers, Kristin Kurtz and Mary Carol Garrity, who helped her decorate some of the main living spaces, including the kitchen and living room. Kilkenny says it was an easy decision to buy. Originally from the KC area, she moved away to attend college at the University of Oklahoma. She graduated, returned home, and knew she wanted to plant roots. Finally, Kilkenny updated the mid-century home’s bathroom with the help of a contractor.
home, located in Fairway, Kansas. Just southwest of the Plaza, Timmons-Mena says it’s a small area that’s full of character and charm. “It’s just a quaint little community — a little anomaly.” The neighborhood was also Kilkenny’s first choice, a result that she’s happy with, but that did not come quickly. All in all, Kilkenny spent eight months on the entire home-buying process, although she says she wasn’t aggressively looking during the first few months. After putting an offer on the first house she looked at in January, she was out-bid and continued her search. Then, in mid-March, Kilkenny toured the home that would become her own. “I loved it. The wait definitely tested my patience. I walked in and it was the house; I just got the feeling,” she says. “I would do it again.” Her three-bedroom, two-bath home is an older model — built

“It just made more sense to me to go ahead and buy the home,” she explains. “It was more of a comfort thing and making an investment versus renting.” MILLENNIAL PERSPECTIVES Timmons-Mena loves working with millennials, she says. Those in that age bracket are some of her favorite customers. “They just want to own their own home and I love seeing that,” she says. “They want to be part of the community and owning is a big part of that.” Not only is it a good experience to help first-time buyers, she shares, but it’s a process that helps her grow as a real estate agent. Every time she shows a home to younger buyers, they ask questions she wouldn’t have considered, and ones that Timmons-Mena has never been asked before. “As an agent, that helps me think outside the box,” Timmons-Mena says. “So far, every millennial I’ve worked with has helped me grow and understand the world through their eyes. That’s the biggest part of it — seeing things through a really cool set of glasses.”
APP OF THE MONTH
1 SECOND EVERYDAY The gist: Think of the 1 Second Everyday (1SE) app as a video diary. You
shoot one second of video to capture a moment in your day. And when you’ve reached the end of the week, month, year, or whatever length of time you’ve predetermined, 1 Second Everyday stitches them together to create a montage. Capture daily seconds for the first year of your baby’s life. Use it to sum up a long vacation. Keep track of your daily goings on for a year. The possibilities are endless. With the “timeline” feature, you can categorize your snippets — for instance, if you want a separate 1SE for your kid, your pet, or anything else. The app uses Google Drive to store your snippets — uploading automatically from your phone and allowing you to organize folders through the site. One added bonus of the app: It might motivate you to get out and try new things. As creator Cesar Kuriyama wrote on his blog after forgetting to record a second two days in a row, “I [learned] a valuable lesson: When you’re not doing anything interesting, it doesn’t occur to you to capture the moment.”

The BOLD Brow
Gone are the days of the skinny, pencil-drawn eyebrow. The biggest trend in beauty right now is a fuller, more dramatic brow. Celebrities like Emma Watson, Cara Delevingne, and Camilla Bell show that us that the bigger the brow, the better.

I had the “skinny brow” problem after years of getting bad waxes and working with aestheticians who don’t take the time to actually shape my brows. I have had to go through the growth process (which isn’t pretty at first). But it is well worth it to achieve your desired look. When it comes to waxing, some women experience breakouts

Tweezing is a precise method and will deliver the same results. To complete your dramatic brow look, products are a must! Eaton has worked with Anastasia Beverly Hills products for more than a decade and she swears by them. She tends to use a brow powder because it will help you achieve more of a natural look. Use a brow pencil to create a more defined look. To get the perfect brow, she suggests the Anastasia Brow Powder Duo, which comes in many shades. Eaton prefers ashy tones. DINING WITH KIDS: GO BEYOND THE ‘FAMILY RESTAURANT’ Let’s face it, dining out with children is not easy. Typically, you have limited time until they start to go nuts, you may have a picky eater you are trying to appease, and there is the inevitable battle of getting them to stay in their seat until dinner is finished. You often ask yourself, “Is taking them out with us even worth it?” My opinion is yes! My kids aren’t perfect, but I have found that taking

The staff brings out a great bread basket at the start and warm cookies at the end of the meal. Added bonus: The outdoor patio is great during the summer months.

MIND & BODY
BY JULIE BURTON
The Secrets in Our Gut The human body has been studied for thousands of years. Yet, we are still discovering its secrets in 2016.
“Over time, unhealthy living imprints on genes. They are a gateway to the past and even a window into the future,” says Dr. Jay Goodbinder, PSc.D at The Epigenetics Healing Center. In order to study our genetics, body, and mind, Dr. Goodbinder looks at the gut.
Foods also will take control of your feelings. It’s not that crazy of a concept. In fact, we talk about it every Thanksgiving. Turkey contains the amino acid tryptophan. Tryptophan contains precursor cells that change into the neurotransmitters serotonin and melatonin — the brain chemicals that make you happy and sleepy. Whether you fall asleep after Thanksgiving dinner due to large amounts of food is up for debate, but the amino acids from the turkey are still there.
“The gut” includes the stomach, small intestine, large intestine, and colon. This group of organs is treated as the second brain
Our guts control more than digestion. Anyone who has experienced butterflies in an anxious situation can feel the brain talking

to functional wellness doctors like Dr. Goodbinder. Functional medicine addresses the underlying causes of a disease. “Research shows us that diseases start in the gut. It’s where 70 percent of our immune system is,” he explains.

to our gut. But the gut also can talk to the brain. The gut plays a role in our mental state. According to Dr. Goodbinder, there are millions of nerve cells lining your gastrointestinal tract. Inflammation in the lining of the gut sends signals to the central nervous system that trigger mood changes. “Gut inflammation destroys a lot of things. When you break the gut barrier with inflammation, you’re breaking the same chemical that makes the blood brain barrier,” Dr. Goodbinder shares. “It creates inflammation on the brain and here comes the migraines or depression or anxiety.” What causes this gut inflammation? What we eat. “There’s no research that proves people with depression have low serotonin,” he says. “Antidepressants will work at first, but then it fades after time because the receptors won’t take the extra serotonin. It’s like chewing a piece of gum. Eventually, the gum loses its flavor. Depression is an allergic response to inflammation on the brain.” If you want to fix what’s going on with your mind, your gut is a good place to start. The gut produces up to 90 percent of the body’s serotonin. If you can keep the inflammation in the gut down, your mind and body will follow. Consuming high amounts of sugar, processed foods, odd chemicals like food coloring, and refined flours introduces massive amounts of chemicals that many experts consider toxic into the body. The body’s immune system will have a hard time keeping up with these foreign invaders. But it’s not always our food that triggers the inflammation. “We have a mucus lining on our gut to protect it,” Dr. Goodbinder notes. “If stressed, there’s less mucus on the line of the gut. Now you have no armor. If you throw in sugar, dyes, pesticides, and gluten — it will create micro trauma to gut. It starts a chain reaction.” Sometimes, food particles will leak through the gut lining into the bloodstream. There will be an immune reaction to the extra foreign bodies of food proteins. This is the beginning of what is called a “leaky gut.” According to Dr. Goodbinder, a leaky gut is often the primary cause of conditions of asthma, thyroid problems, food allergies, migraines, and rheumatoid arthritis. How can you combat a leaky gut? “Eat an anti-inflammatory diet — a lot of vegetables, a little fruit, and a little meat,” Dr. Goodbinder advises. “That’s it. Gluten is not the worst thing in the world. The wheat of the past is different. The gluten of today is like glue; it doesn’t break down. Modified foods such as Splenda are not good either. Our ancestors didn’t eat Splenda.” We will never know all the secrets of the human body. Our bodies are not that simple. “If there’s a drug that will help you, please go see your doctor,” he says. “But you will eventually need to find the root cause. Your body is good at curing you if you know where to start.” And, the secrets in the gut are always a good place to start.

PETS
BY BRENNAN HALLOCK
Do Pets Have a Sixth Sense? We’ve all been in a situation where a pet seemed to know more than we did. Cows know when it’s going to storm, for instance. Cats always seem to be aware of danger sooner than you are. And dogs can determine whether someone is “good” or “bad” in an instant.
But do these pets actually have a sixth sense? Or are they just paying better attention than you are? According to some ongoing science, the answer might be both. Animals likely notice things that humans ignore — probably due to factors like line of sight or a better sense of smell. Recent studies show that cats and dogs have ultraviolet vision, allowing them to see things that your eyes can’t detect. This helps animals see at night, but some believe it allows them to see supernatural activity. (You know, if you believe in that sort of thing.) Other things pets can “sense”? Sickness, bad moods, weather-pattern changes, animosity between other people or animals, and

more. With a combination of skills, mostly through sight and smell, pets are more aware of these seemingly subtle changes — oftentimes well before you even realize they are taking place. You can usually tell when pets have noticed something by how they act. They might seem worried, look to you for comfort, try to alert you to a situation, or abruptly stop whatever they were doing. The better you know your pet, the easier you’ll know when they sense something might not be right. So, does that give them a sixth sense? Or are they just equipped differently than you are? It all depends on what you believe,
scientists say. But, pets most definitely have abilities that you do not. Those factors combined make them ideal detectives, especially when you are looking at your health or when you’re meeting new people. Even though you might get a general “creeped out” feeling, if your pet doesn’t seem worried, chances are there’s not much to be stressed about. However, once their behavior changes and you start noticing something “off ” in how they are acting, it’s definitely time to reevaluate what might be taking place under the surface.

Leaving the Family Home Doesn’t Have to Be Painful sizing for seniors in Kansas City by simplifying the moving process and acting as each client’s single point of contact,” according to its website. Senior Move Services, which works in the greater Kansas City area, can efficiently move your loved one into any new home, and reduce the stress and anxiety associated with such a move for both you and your loved one. Founder and owner Gerre Wade was inspired to open Senior Move Services after seeing her father transition to a retirement community from the place he had called home for 50 years. The move was helpful to her father’s quality of life and health. Seeing how much he benefited from moving into a retirement community encouraged her to help others make the same transition. Wade, a certified relocation and transition specialist, promises to take away the hassles and headaches of moving. Senior Move Services can: The wish to grow old in your own home is normal. It is natural to want to surround yourself with the comfort of what is familiar and beloved, whether that is the expansive Kansas farmland, your suburban cul-de-sac, or your inclusive urban neighborhood. Humans desire what is familiar and comfortable. But, as we age, our homes become harder to live in and less suited to our aging bodies. Stairs become more difficult to navigate, the dishes harder to reach, and home upkeep more taxing.

Moving out of your home is a difficult and daunting task, as well. Many choose to stay put and deal with the hardships that living in their homes brings rather than confront a task as overwhelming as moving. Senior Move Services hopes to make that transition from home to assisted living much less stressful.
Relocating to a living situation more suited to one’s age is a formidable decision. It’s hard to leave behind the memories, familiarities, and comforts of the family home. But there is a time in everyone’s life where those difficult decisions must be confronted, and when that time arrives, Wade and her staff at Senior Move Services want to ease the transition, make the decisions less painful, and enhance their clients’ quality of life.

Even though there may not be a cure for migraine headaches, there are ways to treat the symptoms and decrease their frequency and severity. When over-the-counter pain-relief drugs such as aspirin, acetaminophen, or NSAIDs (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) like ibuprofen are no longer effective, prescription medications are available. Treatments may be either prophylactic (taken daily) or abortive (taken once symptoms start). “If a patient suffers from more than two severe headaches weekly, they may be a good candidate for prophylactic medications,” she says. Prophylactic treatments decrease the frequency of headaches and also help decrease their severity when headaches do occur. Some examples of prophylactic medicines include medications used for blood pressure regulation, anti-seizure medications, and antidepressants.

Triptans are the most common category of abortive medications used in the treatment of migraines. They work on the blood vessels and neurotransmitters to increase serotonin and constrict blood vessels. The oral pill is the most common form available, although pharmaceutical companies also make injectable and nasal spray options. Dr. Younger points out patients should take abortive medications no more than four days a week. Overuse of such medications might cause rebound

headaches. She adds that caffeine also can help, but may cause a migraine the next day — so it is probably best to avoid it. While there aren’t really any new ways to treat migraines, she says, a person may be unaware of standard treatments within the field of neurology that a neurologist might recommend. And because it is something they have never tried before, the treatment would be “new” to them. The tendency to develop migraines is inherited, Dr. Younger explains. Hormones can be a trigger, with some patients reporting the occurrence of “tension headaches” during their monthly cycle. Other triggers may include: lack of or too much sleep; skipped meals; bright lights, loud noises, or strong odors; alcohol (often red wine); caffeine (too much or withdrawal); and nitrate-containing foods, such as hot dogs and lunch meats. It’s probably no surprise that stress can trigger migraine headaches. It may surprise you to know, however, that even positive life events can cause stress. And studies have found that everyday stresses are actually responsible for more headaches than major life changes. Figure out what causes you to feel stressed and reduce or eliminate what you can. For stressors that cannot be avoided, find healthy ways to deal with them. Lifestyle changes, such as getting up and going to bed at the same time every day, also may help to reduce the frequency of migraines.

GOOD TASTES

Sweet & Salty
Monster Cookies When our house was on the market, I left some warm cookies for every showing. It made the house smell good, sure, but I remember looking for houses and it was EXHAUSTING. I might’ve bought any house that offered me warm cookies, even if the house had been totally wrong for us. So, yes. I tried to bribe prospective buyers with cookies. During one particular showing, I left two dozen of these on a tray with a pitcher of lemon water. We were leaving just as the family pulled in — the parents and their two kids gave us a friendly wave. When we returned an hour later, every single cookie was gone! That’s 24 cookies. Granted, they were small cookies, but STILL! Did they eat them
all? Stuff them in their bag for later? Give them to passers-by on the street? Oh my goodness! We never did find out what happened, but they must’ve been good, right? These cookies are a new twist on a classic monster cookie. The recipe includes all the important ingredients — oatmeal, chocolate chips, peanut butter — but adds a salty twist with broken pretzels. I also replace the M&M’s with Reese’s Pieces because the orange and brown are so perfectly festive this time of year. There just isn’t a more perfect cookie for October. Whether your taste-testers are spooky or sweet, these cookies are guaranteed to please!
Lindsay Weiss cooks from her home on the range in the outskirts of Kansas City. She’s won more than $100,000 in recipe contests, but still struggles to please her picky taste-testers Kate, Carter, and Cash. You can find her kid-tested, hubby-approved recipes at sugarmamacooks.com.

Halloween Monster Pretzel Cookies Yields about 60 small cookies
Ingredients: 4-1/2 cups rolled oats 2 teaspoons baking soda 2 cups semisweet chocolate chips (Nestlé’s makes an orange and black for Halloween)
3/4 cup Reese’s Pieces 3/4 cup crushed pretzels 1 cup white sugar 1-1/4 cups packed brown sugar 1/2 cup butter 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
Directions Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Line a cookie sheet with silpat or parchment paper. Mix together the oats, baking soda, chocolate chips, Reese’s Pieces, and pretzels. Set aside. In the bowl of a stand mixer, combine white sugar, brown sugar, butter, vanilla extract, eggs, and peanut butter. Gradually add the oatmeal mixture to the wet ingredients. TRENDS
BY MELANIE KNOPKE
Photos / Anaphora Shop
Boutique Spotlight: Anaphora Cutting-edge, one-of-a-kind, sophisticated; these are all words I would use to describe Anaphora Boutique. The shop, which opened a year ago in Prairiefire, is the brainchild of Tyler Enders, Thomas McIntyre, and Adam Pfeifer. Enders and McIntyre also own Made in KC, which has been wildly successful in its first year and a half. Pfeifer previously worked for Standard Style and Baldwin. I spoke with Pfeifer to find out a little more about their store, what makes them different, and their favorite pieces and trends for 2016.

How did “Anaphora” come to be? Anaphora started as a mutual admiration among our partners for minimalism, international designers, and aesthetics that we felt were relatively unexplored in the midwest. What started as a conversation about discovering emerging and international designers quickly became a thought-provoking retail concept. Everything else seemed to evolve from there.
What are your favorite trends for 2016? I’m loving pieces with tie details, whether it’s a sleeve, a wrap skirt, or a lace-up blouse. I think we will continue to see a lot of that in spring 2017. Bell sleeves are my other favorite this fall. We saw them everywhere and we will have a ton of options throughout the end of the year.
What will customers find when they come into the store? Hopefully, they’ll find something unexpected and unique. Even our wardrobe staples have points of interest. And our limited number of pieces mean that if you find something you love — you’re one of a very few who have it. What is it that makes Anaphora unique? What’s fun about Anaphora is knowing that when you walk in, you’re going to see pieces and designers you probably won’t find anywhere else in town — sometimes anywhere else in the country. At the same time, Anaphora still has a Midwest sensibility. The pieces are wearable, affordable, and built to last. What are your favorite pieces in the store right now? Everything from fall has me so excited right now: sweaters, jackets, layering pieces. Our suede pieces are incredible, as are our new denim from AMO. Our dresses from Bec & Bridge constantly amaze me as well. I honestly don’t know anyone who offers as much in design at their price point.

Allie’s Sale / Oct. 6–8 This massive three-day charity garage sale (teamlittleowl.org/allies-sale) is held every October in honor of Allie Fisher, who died at just 3 years old from gliomatosis cerebri, a rare brain cancer. The sale features more than 10,000 goods, raffle items, and food donated by local families and businesses. All proceeds are donated to the Children’s Brain Tumor Family Foundation.

Enchanted Forest, George S. Owens Nature Park / Oct. 19–20, 26–27
GLOW Jack-O-Lantern Festival is a spellbinding Halloween experience at Powell Gardens. More than 700 hand-carved Jack-O-Lanterns light a onemile trail through the Gardens where you’ll meet costumed characters, take a trip on a hayride, make crafts and paint pumpkins, and more.
Enjoy an evening of live music, delicious bites, and a variety of regional beer and wine. See animals on exhibit and hear live music. Who knew philanthropic endeavors could be so fun?
Step back in time at this medieval-themed village, home to jousting knights, beautiful maidens, and jolly royalty. Explore the village shops, food vendors, and 20+ stages of live entertainment. The festival continues through October with themed weekends: Wine, Chocolate & Romance (Oct. 1 and 2), Buccaneer Beer Fest (Oct. 8 and 9), and Witches & Wizards (Oct. 15 and 16).
Thousands flock every October to George S. Owens Nature Park as it magically transforms into the Enchanted Forest. Although the nonscary characters delight both the young and old, the Enchanted Forest is geared toward those 3 to 9 years old. Groups are guided through the magical and mystical forest, where you will encounter everything from fairies to fairytale characters.
