DON’T JUST TAKE OUR WORD FOR IT ANDREA LOST 15 LBS I am very grateful and happy with the results I achieved during the Maxlife program! The staff was very helpful and friendly. It is an easy to follow program that takes motivation, dedication and commitment. In 30 days I lost 15 pounds and 13 inches!!! The weight loss was great, but the overall feeling I have now that my body is back in balance is amazing!
MARYBETH LOST 24 LBS Before I felt tired and fat, I wasn’t sleeping well and generally I just felt bad. After the MaxLife program my metabolic age went from 54 to 33 years. My thyroid is back in range and I’m taking less synthroid to treat it. My psoriasis is much better. Just the other day my stylist said she’d never seen my scalp look so good. My weight is easy to maintain, I’m no longer taking prescription anti-inflammatory meds, and I have a whole new wardrobe!
VIOLA LOST 18 LBS Thanks to the MaxLife Program, my husband and I feel amazing. I have really noticed a difference in my health as well as my husband! I was really wanting to lose my mid-section and it is gone! We now know moving forward how to plan and eat right to keep our health moving in the right direction thanks to this program.

PUBLISHER’S NOTE
DON'T WAIT TO SEE A DOCTOR Thanks to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure foundation, the American public has been conditioned to recognize breast cancer every October. This is incredible — we absolutely must be aware of the signs and symptoms of breast cancer. But it is easy to forget about the more than 100 other cancers that can affect people. And we must remember that cancer is not age-discriminatory. Being young doesn't make you immune. Cancer survivor Mandy Garavaglia, who we profiled on page 34, is on a mission to get this message out to the masses. I’ve known Mandy for nine years. She is a truly generous, supportive friend. And she’s one of the strongest women I know. Three years ago, when she was only 32, Mandy got her first cancer diagnosis — early stage endometrial cancer. Fortunately, doctors successfully removed the tumor. But early this year, she received more bad news. This time, it was an ovarian cancer diagnosis. This cancer is known as “the whispering disease” because the symptoms are so similar to monthly cycles and gastrointestinal issues. And, it’s commonly associated with older women and often discovered much too late. Mandy is fortunate that doctors discovered the tumor when they did. She’s alive today to share her story. In hindsight, Mandy says she had every symptom: bloating, abdominal swelling, back pain, bowel changes, urinary frequency, and fatigue. If you have any of these symptoms and they’ve lasted more than two weeks, schedule an appointment with your doctor. This is Mandy’s plea: Don’t wait. Don’t become another victim of the disease that whispers.

WHAT, WHERE Meet Melissa Beltrame Who:
What:
MELISSA BELTRAME OF LEAD BANK By day, Melissa Beltrame leads the marketing efforts at Lead Bank, a locally owned community bank with three locations that was recently named the KC Chamber’s best small business of the year. During the evening, she is a part-time “Uber” driver for her children. Beltrame is grateful for her mom-friendly career, as she believes women have the opportunity to “do it all” in this day and age. She enjoys giving back to the community by volunteering at the Women's Employment Network, where she mentors women by conducting mock interviews and sharpening their resume writing skills. In her free time, she enjoys playing tennis, running, cycling, competing in triathalons — and, of course, cheering on her girls in their various activities.
Where:
FAVORITE PLACE TO DINE
My husband and I love Café Provence in Prairie Village for a special date night. If we’re looking for something more casual, we opt for pad thai from Sawasdee Thai Cuisine, which is always a crowd favorite at our house. And, most recently, I discovered the lobster rolls and wild mushroom cheesecake from Vivilore — so decadent and delicious!
FAVORITE DRINK
It’s hard to beat a pitcher of La Bodega’s red sangria on their patio. To start my work day. though, you’ll frequently find me at PT's at the Crossroads, sipping a chai latte. And who can beat a cup of spiced hot apple cider from Louisburg Cider Mill this time of year?
FAVORITE SHOPPING
I’m not a huge shopper. When I do need to purchase something, convenience and a wide selection are key. So I find myself most often shopping from my phone at Amazon or Target. I frequent The Learning Tree, too. It’s the perfect place for children’s birthday gifts. If I’m in the market for a new outfit, my favorite place to buy clothes is Boden — if only they had a physical retail store in KC!
FAVORITE HIDDEN GEMS
The trails at Parkville Nature Sanctuary make for a fun morning activity followed by a pizza lunch at Stone Canyon Pizza. We also enjoy biking from our home to the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art or the River Market on Saturday mornings with a stop for breakfast at Chez Elle in the Westside. Our girls can’t get enough of their Paris crepe (Nutella and banana)! The Culinary Center of Kansas City in downtown Overland Park is great for cooking classes (for kids and adults both), a quick take-home meal, team-building events, or as a gift option.
FAVORITE PLACES TO TAKE OUT-OF-TOWN GUESTS
KC is known for its barbecue, so our go-to place for guests visiting us is, without a doubt, Joe’s Kansas City BarB-Que (for a Z-Man), followed by homemade ice cream at Sylas & Maddy’s (originally from Lawrence, with a second location in Olathe).

Girlfriend Getaways: NO BOYS ALLOWED We know you love your significant other. We know you love your kids, your parents, even your pets. We know that. Now ditch ’em. Call your girlfriends and pack your weekend bags for the city — Kansas City. Yes, we’re right here but you can still get away to visit under the veil of a tourist. We put together a girlfriend-getaway itinerary. Mix and match. Do one or all, but go see KC how it’s meant to be seen — with your BFFs, of course. Don’t forget the selfie in front of one of our fountains. #CityofFountains
BRUNCH AT WESTPORT BAR & CAFÉ westportcafeandbar.com
Westport was founded long before Kansas City. If the walls at Westport Bar and Café could speak, well, they wouldn’t. They’re too busy savoring the lemon ricotta pancakes.

riety of food, in addition to hearing the stories of the River Market and restaurateurs. You’ll enjoy delicious samples equal to a hearty lunch.
You can dine inside, but the best way to feel like Parisians in KC is to sit on the front patio. With crepes, wine, and girlfriends, of course.
We have fewer than 12 weeks until Christmas. Mark your calendars for Oct. 18 to 21 and knock out that gift-buying with your best shopping partners. This four-day event, hosted by the Junior League of Kansas City, benefits community projects focused on women and children.
TAKE A WALKING TOUR OF RIVER MARKET kcwalkingtours.com
Fact: This city was almost named Rabbitville, Missouri. We’ll take Kansas City, thanks. These tidbits of history can be heard on the KC Walking or Streetcar Tours. With more than 200 years of history, you’ll definitely learn something new. If history isn’t quite your thing, KC Walking Tours also offers the River Market Food Tour. You’ll visit five or six dining locations featuring a va-

With 200 retailers, you may need all four days to shop for those on your “nice list.” Tickets are available for preferential shopping on Thursday, ladies’ night out on Friday, and holi-DYI on Saturday. Sunday, Saint Nick will be there to take pictures with kids. It’s the perfect distraction while you and your friends stay focused.

Your group of friends will choose three bars along a pre-determined route either in Waldo or the Crossroads. Your group meets at the start/stop location where you will hop onboard to begin pedaling to each location. The bike’s “pilot” stops at the places you want to go, then guides you to your next desti-
nation. Rides usually consist of three 15- to 30-minute stops (depending on the route) with 15 to 30 minutes of pedalling time between the stops. You must have a group of eight to 16 people, as Pedal Hopper does not combine groups. All rides last two hours.

SIP (OR STAY) AT BELVOIR WINERY AND INN belvoirwinery.com
Top off the evening with a wine tasting at Belvoir Winery, then get tucked in for some girl talk in this castle? Mansion? The Twilight Zone? This hauntingly beautiful old building was built during the turn of the century in Liberty. Its name was originally the Odd Fellows Home. The former asylum and orphanage is the perfect winery stop in October. Besides wine tastings, Belvoir Winery and Inn hosts murder-mystery dinners and paranormal investigations. It’s also houses eight standard-size suites ... If you don’t mind sleeping with a spirit or two.

KACIE HOW TO CONQUER YOUR FEAR OF FLYING
I am terrified to fly. I have family all over the United States and I never can get myself on a plane and visit them. I know it seems trivial, but to me, it’s a panic attack. Do you have any ideas to help me better cope?
First off, this is not trivial. Fears like this are real and can feel like they will never go away. Desensitization is one way to help get you more comfortable ... Which means flying and getting through it. Medication might help you relax and make flying a little more comfortable. Traveling with a friend can also be reassuring. You are more likely to get in an accident driving your car than to die on an airplane. Pack some things that relax you, such as music, essential oils, or a pillow. Try these suggestions and get out to see your family! You will feel better once you’re surrounded by loved ones.
If you have any questions you’d like Kacie to answer, submit them to our managing editor at: ashley@simplykcmag.com.

GLITTERS FINE JEWELRY: AN UPSCALE ENVIRONMENT WITH A FAMILY ATMOSPHERE Written by Brennan Hallock / Photos by Jami Marshall
It's difficult to find a truly personal touch in today's world of online shopping, mass production, and large chain stores. We often deprive ourselves of the delightful experience that emphasizes genuine customer care. It's also difficult to find something genuinely unique, as so much of what our world is mass-produced. Glitters Fine Jewelry in Leawood has chosen to offer a family atmosphere where you can find the unique and custom-designed pieces. The staff has made these two components of its business its strongest selling points. “We get to know our customers and make it a fun, inviting atmosphere. Everyone knows who you are and remembers you," says Debbie, president of Glitters Fine Jewelry. “A lot of people were raised to buy everything online, and when they come into our store and have real customer service they are pleasantly surprised." The reason Glitters Fine Jewelry feels so much like a family business is because it really is a family business. Debbie’s mother, Diane, began working for a major jeweler at the age of 19. This work turned into a lifelong passion, and more than 38 years ago, she established Glitters Fine Jewelry by designing and selling engagement rings from her home. Debbie and her sister, Beth, later joined the business as well. "I was only going to be there for a short time, but I guess I was hooked,” she says. "My mother really blazed the trail for businesswomen everywhere." Most of the current “Glitter Girls” joined during the time Diane was still running the business. “My mother passed away over 10 years ago, and I decided to honor her by carrying on her traditions of a true family busi-

ness,” Debbie says. “My mother knew just about everyone who walked in the door. We know our business and remain committed to bringing the best to our customers."
“In our industry, there's a difference between brand and designers. We're designer-focused, not brand-focused.” As a statement of its commitment to making customers feel welcome, Glitters Fine Jewelry has created a "family wall” featuring photos and stories highlighting the strong, longtime relationships Glitters has built with KC residents. It's not only this family atmosphere that has attracted people to Glitters Fine Jewelry, though. The emphasis placed on quality is clearly evident. “We carry a wide variety of handpicked designer pieces," she says. “In our industry, there's a difference between brand and designers. We're designer-focused, not brand-focused.” This eye for design means Glitters can create custom pieces. “We have
a jeweler who has been here for close to 30 years," Debbie explains. “We sit down with clients and design pieces they will wear." This is especially true for designing engagement rings. “We cater to the engagement ring; we're hopeless romantics," she says. "We follow through from start to finish and into the engagement to make sure everything runs smoothly." The staff of Glitters believes it's not just about the ring, but also the engagement — and that's where the focus lies. “We're not here for just the quick sale,” she adds. “We know other big-chain jewelry stores focus on volume. That's not our strength. We don't want you to feel like a number to look for an engagement ring. We cater to someone who doesn't want to feel pressured." While Glitters Fine Jewelry is an upscale environment, it provides a relaxing and enjoyable setting without pressure. “This is because we want our guests to feel like they truly are a part of our family,” Debbie says. “We know our business and remain committed to bringing the best to our customers.” Glitters Fine Jewelry is located in Camelot Court in Leawood, 4250 W. 119th St. Find Glitters Fine Jewelry at glitters.com, on Instagram @glittersfinejewelry, and on Facebook at facebook.com/glittersjewelry.
At Glitters Fine Jewelry, you can design your custom engagement ring or shop the store's extensive designer collection.

SKIN MYTHS DEBUNKED females versus males suffering with acne issues decreases with age. Roughly, by their mid-30s, females are 50% more likely to still be suffering from adult acne compared to males, thus “males do tend to outgrow acne,” Mullinix says. Adult acne is more influenced by bad cosmetics, sun damage, slowing of the cellular metabolism, diet, smoking, medications, lifestyles, and stress. Not to mention hormonal fluctuations from birth control, menstrual cycles, pregnancy, or menopause.
There are many “old wives’ tales” about skincare and cosmetics. With all of our advances in technology, we have learned so much about products and the effect they have on our skin. Here are some popular myths debunked by three Kansas City experts.
Myth: Acne goes away as you become an adult. Fact: “The root cause of acne is the same no matter the age,” says Kylie Mullinix, a licensed aesthetician at Skinology Skincare in Overland Park. “Acne is twofold. It is caused by excessive oil from the sebaceous glands that mix with dead skin, and debris that traps the anaerobic P. acne bacteria underneath, causing breakouts.” Adult acne can continue in to one’s 20s, 30s, and 40s; yet the ratio of

Myth: You only need to wear sunscreen during the summer. Fact: “Ninety percent of ultraviolet rays are present all year and in all climates,” says Dr. Meggan Newland, a dermatologist at St. Luke’s. “These rays are the same ones that go right through your windshield. You definitely should wear an SPF 30 every day.” She recommends Image Skincare Prevention+ Daily Hydrating Moisturizer SPF 30 for dry skin, EltaMD SPF 40 Daily Moisturizer for oily skin, and Cetaphil Dermacontrol Oil Control Moisturizer SPF 30 for oily, acne-prone skin
Myth: Everyone needs to use toner in a good skin care regimen Fact: Originally, toners were used to clean skin, restore a pH balance, and dry out oily skin, Newland says. “Cleansers today are much better and less apt to change your pH or leave a film, and the astringent properties may irritate sensitive skin,” she ex-
plains. “Newer, gentle toners (without fragrance or alcohol) can be hydrating and even calming, but you can get these attributes in creams and serums too, leaving the toner often an unnecessary step.”
Myth: To match your makeup, test it out on your wrist. Fact: There are better options than your wrist. “Your hand or inner wrist can have different undertones than your face, get no or little sun exposure, and contain a lot of large veins,” says Samantha Levi, a local makeup artist and photographer. For example, if your skin has yellow undertones and you matched to your wrist, you might end up choosing a foundation with pink undertones, running the risk of making you look unnatural or older. Skip your neck (since that part of your body is typically shadowed), and use your chest instead, she says. Your chest typically receives the same sun exposure as your face and will age at the same rate.
Myth: The best cosmetics and skin care products are the most expensive. Fact: Not always true. Levi suggests investing in a quality primer, a foundation that suits your skin type, and a great powder. The most important thing is to find a professional-quality product that can protect your skin from the elements and keep it looking radiant. “Sunscreen is your best friend and can be found at any price point,” she says. If you are looking to save money, Levi suggests skipping eye shadow, mascara, and lipstick.

THIS IS THE FACE OF CANCER Written by Julie Burton / Photos by Cassandra Castaneda
Two women with two different stories, both of which are making noise on the “whispering disease” known as ovarian cancer.
As a hairstylist, Mandy Garavaglia’s job is to start a conversation — and make you look good. Her craft is working with hair, but she also has the ears of women. Garavaglia is starting a conversation. And her voice is much louder than a whisper.
quickly grew to three. Langel’s urologist assured her such growths are common and harmless in women her age. Cancerous germ cell tumors are rare, making up only 2% of all ovarian cancers according to ACS. Five months later, after another ultrasound, the cysts had grown large enough that Langel had surgery to remove them. Afterward, Langel got the phone call from her surgeon’s personal cell phone. She had ovarian cancer.
Garavaglia was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in January. She is 35 years old. The American Cancer Society (ACS) says 22,000 American women will receive a diagnosis of ovarian cancer in 2018. About 14,000 of those women will die from the disease. Ovarian cancer accounts for more deaths than any other cancer of the female reproductive system.
Garavaglia’s oncologists recommended removing her uterus after a failed attempt to get pregnant again. Garavaglia scheduled her surgery for Jan. 17, 2018. Three days prior to the surgery, during another routine ultrasound, doctors found a 10-centimeter mass on Garavaglia’s ovary that was not there six months prior.
Do statistics change people’s behavior? Perhaps. The real action starts with voices. In 2015, Garavaglia and her husband, John, were ready to start the process for a second baby via IVF. Doctors performed a routine ultrasound, which led to the discovery of polyps in Garavaglia’s uterus. After testing, she was told she had early stage endometrial cancer.

The scheduled surgery took a different course. Garavaglia was told surgeons would make an incision on approximately her zipper line. Her ovary with the cyst would be removed and sent to pathology while Garavaglia slept. If the pathology report revealed cancer, surgeons would cut up to her breastbone and remove
all of Garavaglia’s female organs including the surrounding lymph nodes. “I went to sleep not knowing,” Garavaglia says. “People say you won’t remember waking up from surgery because you’re so groggy but I remem-

I remember opening my drapes, looking at the incision, and knowing I had ovarian cancer.” Langel chose a holistic cancer treatment center in Arizona. She was deemed cancer-free. But the cysts grew back in both ovaries. Langel opted for surgery, removing all of her female organs. Garavaglia says her early stage endometrial cancer was a blessing. Only 9% of women find ovarian cancer at stage 1. Ovarian cancer is called the disease that whispers because the symptoms are subtle — decreased energy, bloating, lower back pain, urinary symptoms, or bowel changes. The only way to screen for ovarian cancer is through regular gynecological check-ups, ultrasounds, and a blood marker called

CA-125. Even then, cervical cancer is difficult to detect in its early stages. It cannot be tested by a pap smear. Garavaglia doesn’t have a family history of gynecologic cancers. She tested negative for genetic mutations and she didn’t have any other risk factors. Garavaglia showed the subtle symptoms of ovarian cancer but many of the symptoms were easily excused. Garavaglia remembers feeling an increase in urination. It was enough of an inconvenience that she went to her doctor to be tested for a UTI, which turned out negative. “This is not an old-lady disease,” Garavaglia stresses. “Women should listen to their bodies and talk to their doctors.
Don’t be embarrassed to talk about periods and the female body. If you feel changes in your body for more than two weeks, talk to your doctor. Don’t let them blow you off just because of your age.” Garavaglia went through chemotherapy to rid her body of any remaining cancer cells after her surgery. She knows she is a rare case in that it was caught early. “I hope this is why I was given this challenge,” Garavaglia says. “This the hardest thing I’ve done in my life. With my job, I talk to so many women. I hope this is God’s purpose for me.” Garavaglia and Langel do not speak in whispers. Their message: This is the face of cancer.

PARENTING
Written by T.E. Cunningham
HOW TO TACKLE TOUGH TOPICS WITH YOUR KIDS Remember when your parents could restrict your access to the telephone and “R” rated movies? When I was a child, it seemed the toughest talk my parents had with me didn’t come until the passing of my maternal grandmother when I was 13. Then, at 16, one of my closest friends committed suicide. It was hard to handle at that time, but in today’s age of roundthe-clock news coverage, cell phones, and the nearly uncontrollable access children today have to the internet, tackling the tough stuff is an entirely different ballgame for parents.
36
| SIMPLYKCMAG.COM
The bad stuff abounds: cancer, suicide, and other health issues that take loved ones much too soon. Racism, sexism, pornography, bullying, and violence of the worse kind — murder, rape, terrorism — are everyday words. So how do you help a child process these horrible realities? First, if you are at a loss on how to approach a topic that must be broached, research it. What you should not do is avoid it. Your children need straight talk, and they need good role models. Teaching your children how to study issues, think critically, and be objective will produce young adults of good character equipped to deal with the realities of life. Be proactive in your approach, as well. If there is a suicide at your child’s school, don’t wait for him to show signs of struggling — talk to him about it immediately. In fact, use the oppor-
tunity to help him learn how he can spot warning signs among friends and classmates for all kinds of dangerous situations, from a potentially suicidal student or one on the verge of a mass shooting. Don’t be a victim of the “not in our town” or “not in our school” mentality. Catherine Craig, a licensed specialist clinical social worker who has worked in both KC and Topeka, has a concentrated focus in the field of attachment and trauma-informed care. “As parents, we must understand and accept we have little control over these painful realities of life our kids will face,” Craig explains. “As parents, our goal is to prepare our children to manage these moments. We must allow them to experience life. With our coaching, compassion, and limit setting, we build their tolerance for being uncomfortable, making mistakes, things not going their way, conflict, emotions, being vulnerable, communicating, and reaching out and asking for help. Part of successful parenting is helping your child build coping skills.” To address the situation in the best

possible way, first consider your child’s age, as children learn and process differently in the maturation process. Be compassionate, but be straightforward.
EARLY CHILDHOOD Young children are literal, so be careful not to use metaphors or complex sentences or thoughts when explaining situations. If your children are very young, you have the best chance to limit their exposure to these grim life happenings — so do so.
TWEENS During this phase of childhood, kids begin to develop abstract-thinking skills and are better able to comprehend gruesome subjects. That said, there might be embarrassment or reticence on their part to initiate these conversations, so be proactive in covering necessary discussions.

TEENS This may be the most challenging age group to address because teens are consuming media and information independently of you on a daily basis. They form their own opinions and often are more likely to follow the thoughts and ideas of friends, teachers, coaches, and others over your own. Don’t let that deter you from rolling up your sleeves and addressing what needs to be discussed. Remember to keep it a discussion and ask a lot of questions. Most importantly: Don’t dictate or lecture!
HeartlandHealthyHeads.com Located in KS and MO
Do remember each child is different, as is each parent. Consider both your child’s and your temperament and emotions when forming a plan on how to orchestrate these discussions.
QUICK TIPS FOR ENGAGING IN TOUGH TOPICS • Protect your child from what you can regarding exposure to news, internet, etc. • Make sure conversation occurs in a safe space with plenty of time for discussion. • Let your child know you want her to be honest, ask questions, and tell you how she is feeling. • Break down issues. (For young children, remember to use the simplest terms.) These opportunities instill, develop, and reinforce good moral character in your child. • Be sensitive to emotions and temperament, which may run wild in these moments. • Encourage your child to research and be objective; if you don’t know the answer to a question, admit it and research it together.

• Discuss with your child what she would do in a complicated situation and what solutions are at her disposal. Craig’s final advice? “Don’t forget — you and your emotional connection with your child is the biggest protective factor when it comes to the stressors and difficulties of life. Each day, you should find a way to connect.”

ADRIENNE MAPLES PHOTOGRAPHY: THE ART OF PRETTY PICTURES Written by Rebecca Fischer
Adrienne Maples has loved “making pretty pictures” from the first day she picked up her mom’s camera. It seemed a better outlet for her creativity than her first foray into art: coloring on the walls. (“I blamed it on the cat,” Maples says with a laugh. “That was basically the end of my lying career.”) To encourage creativity, Maples’ mom gave her a camera on her 15th birthday. Turns out, Mom had a good hunch. Maples took as many photography classes as possible in high school, which, because it was “pre-digital era,” meant lots of film and darkroom work. After high school, she attended the Savannah College of Art & Design to develop and perfect her art. To this day, she shares ideas and critiques with artists she met there. Now 16 years into her career, Maples is more passionate about her work than ever. “I’ve always seen photography as a chance to paint the world as I see it,” Maples shares. “I see so much beauty, and I want to share that with people.”
Building a business While in college, Maples designed her own website from “scratch” — before today’s ready-made templates were available. “I built my business brick by brick,” she says. “I didn’t want to take out a loan. I believed by sharing the work I was passionate about, I would attract the perfect clientele.” Her hard work paid off quickly. Maples began attracting clients based on their appreciation for her artistry and photographic style. Her exceptional talent and ability to relate to and work with people keeps them coming back. She still loves creating “pretty pictures” in which her clients take pride, but she also looks to capture their essence — something that really resonates with them.
“I aim to be honest in my work,” Maples explains. “I want to create beautiful works of art people love and want to hang on their walls, while still capturing and sharing who they are. It’s about integrity.”
“I’ve always seen photography as a chance to paint the world as I see it. I see so much beauty, and I want to share that with people.” And, it’s very important to her that her clients enjoy the experience. “Her approach is so natural and effective that you don’t even realize you’re being photographed,” says longtime client Sarah Temps. “I am truly amazed, year after year, with the moments and memories she captures in our family photos. They tell a story of the bonds we have.”
Connecting with community Maples relocated to Kansas City in 2005. She fell in love with the city immediately. “I was born and raised in the South, and my family’s still there,” she says. “But I love Kansas City — the people, especially. It’s definitely home.” To Maples, it’s important to connect with local business owners, including other photographers, to create “com-
munity over competition.” Lately, she has focused this effort on social media, where she aims to draw positive attention to local businesses. Follow and use the hashtag #bethechangeinsocialmedia to join the movement. In fact, social media has become another of Maples’ great passions. As the mother of a young daughter, she’s inspired to ensure the online space is safe and positive for not just children, but everyone. “Social media is essential for growing a business, but it can also be antiproductive,” she explains. “If I don’t get online with a specific purpose, it can be a colossal waste of time and energy. So let’s get online with intent — to support and encourage others.”
Creating prettier pictures Everybody has a camera these days (thank you, cellphones), but Maples attributes her success behind the lens to her study of film photography. It took time to master the intricacies of a true camera; understanding exposure, using f-stops, shutter speed, and focal length. It’s critical to think about what you’re shooting — compose it — and make it meaningful. “Perfection and speed don’t go together,” Maples says, “and I’m always going for the perfect shot. When I see something beautiful and don’t have my camera, I think, ‘Bummer, I can’t get that with my phone so why waste my time? I definitely won’t be posting on social media!’” Interested in booking time with Maples? Visit adriennemaplesphotography.com or call 913.549.3335.

TO COMPOST OR NOT TO COMPOST With large holiday meals ahead, make sure you compost as much as you can. Composting saves energy, your garbage disposal, and landfill space. Consider making a rich compost bin or pile in a secured area. (And away from Fido, of course.) Use this guide to keep up with your composting throughout winter.
Go For it!
Better Not...
* Vegetable scraps
* Meat or animal products
* Egg shells
* Coal ash
* Yard waste (lawn clippings, leaves)
* Weeds or weed seeds
* Newspaper
* Colored paper
* Manure (from vegetarian animals)
* Pet droppings
* Coffee grounds and filters
* Synthetic chemicals
Don’t forget: Even with the dropping temperatures, microbes breaking down the organic matter can still remain active in the compost pile, according to the Texas AgriLife Extension Service. The center of the pile can be warm and actively composting because of heat generated

by bacteria, but the outer layers of your pile are at the mercy of the daily highs and lows. The point here? Don't turn your compost in the winter months. This saves the heat already in the core of your pile or bin. Also, put a tarp over
the compost area to keep heat in and moisture out. Add extra leaves or straw within, around, and on top of your compost pile. An alternative option is to dig a one-foot deep hole in the ground for your compost pile and bury it for the winter months.

BECAUSE I SAID SO ...
Written by Julie Burton / Photo by Samantha Levi
Scott laid face down on the living room rug. Our other daughter, Emma, and I sat on the couch and watched TV as the hum of the razor started. Kate: DONE! Nice and smooth. Perfect. Mom, you’re next. Emma: Mom doesn’t have a hairy back, Kate. Me: Kate, I don’t have hair like Daddy. I don’t need you to use an electric razor on my back. Kate: I wasn’t talking about your back. Your booty. We laughed. Me: I know you can see Daddy has a hairy booty, but I don’t. Boys and girls grow hair differently. Emma: Kate! Knock it off. Girls don’t have hair like boys. Put the razor away. Mom’s fine. Kate: HER FRONT BOOTY, EMMA! SHE HAS HAIR ON HER FRONT BOOTY AND LET’S TAKE IT OFF, HONEY! I LOVE THIS JOB! LET ME HEAR THE SNAGS.
A HAIRY SITUATION My husband, Scott, has a hairy back.
44
Now, back to Scott’s back hair. Scott is not, like, Pierce Brosnan-hairy, but he needs a weekly shave. I don’t even know if Brosnan is hairy but, for whatever reason, I keep visualizing a topless Pierce Brosnan in Mrs. Doubtfire ... and he appears to be hairy.
I told you he wouldn’t mind.
He still looks good, though.
This is a fairly recent bodily change. Scott never used to have a hairy back. I suppose it’s part of the aging process. We, as humans, start losing hair in some places and growing hair in others. One might think it’s shocking for me to write about my husband’s back hair. I assure you, Scott doesn’t mind this story. The shock factor is not on him — it’s on me.
And so does Scott. With or without a hairy back.
You’ve been warned. Keep reading at your own peril.
During this particular week’s back shave, Kate began her work while

Kate started the razor. I backed away on the couch, jumped off the corner, and grabbed the razor from her. This is one of Scott’s favorite stories to tell friends and family. In fact, he’s humored that I’m sharing this story in SIMPLYkc Magazine.
But Scott’s hairy back bothers him. About a year ago, he recruited our daughter, Kate, to help him shave the parts he can’t reach. Kate found a love in her weekly “daddy’s back shave.” Her favorite part is hearing “the hairs snag off.” Her words, not mine.

APP OF THE MONTH
IFTTT MAKES YOUR APPS AND DEVICES TALK TO EACH OTHER The gist: IFTTT stands for “If This, Then That,” which lets you
link your devices and apps so they work together. You can set your digital thermostat to change when you turn your alarm off, get a text if rain is in the forecast tomorrow, add a reminder on your calendar to go to bed earlier tomorrow if you sleep less time than desired, or turn on your lights or central heating if you’re nearing home. More than 600 apps work with IFTTT, including Twitter, Google Drive, Instagram, Gmail, Google Home, Amazon Alexa, and Nest. IFTTT works with web applications, as well. For example, Spotify can automatically send you an email listing the 30 songs on your Discover Weekly playlist so you never lose a hot track. IFTTT is available for free on both Android and iOS.
A fashion, beauty & lifestyle blog where creator Leah Lowe shares her current favorites in trends, skincare & home decor.

l UNDERRATED BBQ JOINTS a c lo
1 Brobeck’s Barbeque / 4615
Indian Creek Parkway, OPKS
Doug Brobeck opened the joint 11 years ago, and it’s a little different than most barbecue places. You won’t find sauce served with its barbecue. Try the burnt ends or baby-back ribs. The ham salad is also a best-seller. It’s made from the ham and turkey shavings left in the smoker, a technique Brobeck learned from watching his grandmother as a boy.
2 H awg Jaw Que & Brew / 900
Swift St., North KCMO Hawg Jaw
Que & Brew started out a family endeavor, entering barbecue competitions and winning some along the way. Today, the restaurant specializes in slow smoking with fruit woods and a touch of spices that bring out the flavor in meats. The smoked prime rib dinner with burnt ends are popular, plus the cheesy corn and Buffalo coleslaw.
3 J ones BBQ / 6706 Kaw Drive, KCK Owners and sisters Mary
Jones Mosley and Deborah Jones are gaining nationwide notoriety for their to-go eatery that’s located in a former taco stand. They’ve been in the business for over 30 years. Check out the burnt ends and brisket. But you can’t go wrong with anything on the menu.
4 K &M Bar-B-Q / 603 N. Webster St., Spring Hill, KS K&M Bar-B-Q
has been open for the past 18 years on the southern outskirts of Kansas City in Spring Hill, Kansas. K&M serves tender beef brisket, savory ham, homemade Italian sausage, turkey, and pulled pork. Its sides include the popular baked beans with burnt ends.
5 LC’s Bar-B-Q / 5800 Blue Parkway, KCMO It’s not uncommon to
sit down next to a Sporting KC player at LC’s Bar-B-Q, considering how
frequently the team visits. Opened in 1986, this family-owned-and-operated barbecue restaurant smokes the meat in front of you in its well-aged, thick-walled oven.
6 R osedale Bar-B-Q / 600 South-
west Blvd., KCK Rosedale Bar-B-Q
is one of the oldest-running barbecue restaurants owned and operated by the same family in Kansas City. The menu hasn’t changed much since 1934, and includes brisket, ham, pork, and turkey. Rosedale still offers some of the best hotdogs in town, topped with barbecue chili.
7 Wyandot BBQ / 8441 State Ave., KCK A favorite of actor Eric Ston-
estreet, Wyandot BBQ has been serving customers since 1977. Williams’ secret to the best-tasting barbecue in KCK is in his sauce. The ribs are the most popular item on the menu.
