PUBLISHER’S NOTE

JUST KEEP SWIMMING I know I’m not alone in this: trying to get a bajillion things done on a limited timeframe during these final two months of the year. From arranging family gatherings, shopping for gifts, and attending holiday parties while making sure to still complete daily work and life tasks … We’re all trying to get more done in so few hours. (I’m not sure whether I would want more hours in the day — or fewer.) Which is why I am definitely dog-earing our 7 Things column on page 48. We’ve compiled a list of seven ways to be more productive. Confession time. A guilty pleasure is reading those “ways to live a more productive life” type stories. I like to daydream that I’ll one-day become an uber-organized and effective member of society. Like Martha Stewart. Only not as wealthy. But, while I do try to apply some of the tips to my own life, I know it’s OK that I’m not always totally efficient. Because this month is also about slowing down, taking stock of your life, and being grateful for all the good things. Maybe the key takeaway from our column is No. 7: “Let go of your need for perfection. If you can be OK

Remember to give yourself a break this November. You deserve it.

Suzanne Steiner, Publisher

P.S. Speaking of gratitude, I’d like to extend my heartfelt thanks to Melanie, our former editor in chief and writer, for her many years of work on the magazine. We wish her the very best in her new venture!

WHAT, WHERE Meet Jenny Kincaid Julian Who: What:

“JK” OR “JENNYKIN” She’s married to Tim and is mom to Ellis (3.5) and to a chunky, happy little guy named Gus or “Beef,” who just turned 1. She’s also the founder and owner of Socialworx Public Relations, a lifestyle, public, and social relations firm specializing in all things PR. Socialworx clients range from restaurants, retail, hospitality, development and residential living, beauty, finance, fitness, tech, startups, and nonprofits. Like many, Julian loves KC and wants to do her part to leave it a bit better for the future. She’s spent the past decade volunteering for several local nonprofits and is currently the board president of SAVE Inc., a 31-year-old nonprofit that started out as the first HIV/AIDS hospice in Missouri. Since then, it has expanded its mission to help people suffering from not only HIV/ AIDS, but mental illness, homelessness, and substance abuse find housing so they can move on and live healthy, stable, meaningful lives.

Where:

FAVORITE PLACE TO EAT IN KC So many! M&M Bakery downtown, Cascone’s in North KC, Jackstack BBQ, and, because my office is downtown, I like City Diner in River Market for breakfast and Sasha’s Baking Co. in downtown KC for coffee, naughty cookies, and lunch.

FAVORITE DRINK IN KC My back porch. But if I’m out, I like Harry’s Bar and Tables in Westport and Capital Grille on the Country Club Plaza for a Stoli Doli. And I love the Green Lady Lounge in the Crossroads!

FAVORITE PLACE TO SHOP IN KC I like locally owned stores for gifts, home decor, and specialty items. STUFF in Brookside is great for candles, cards, and gifts, Cellar Rat in the Crossroads and Underdog Wine Co. in Brookside for your next hostess gift or just need a great bottle of wine for a special occasion. Nell Hill’s in KCMO for inspiration, Terrasi Living & Scandia Home on the Plaza for bed sheets and Pryde’s Kitchen & Necessities in Westport for all things kitchen. If I could have any artwork in my house it would be a Jennifer Janesko painting.

FAVORITE HIDDEN GEMS IN KC Shooter’s on North Oak. Actually, North Kansas City as a whole.

FAVORITE PLACES TO TAKE OUT-OF-TOWN GUESTS Back home to Weston or down to Brookside, the Country Club Plaza, and the WWI Museum downtown.

AROUND TOWN

Written by Rebecca Fischer Photos by Make Digital Group

Since 2006, Avenues Bistro has been offering elegant European cuisine in Brookside.

Owner and Chef Joe Birch was inspired to offer global cuisine at Avenues after traveling extensively with his family and eating at some of the world’s very best restaurants. He knew Kansas Citians would be just as excited about other countries’ ingredients, cooking techniques, and cuisine as he was. He was right. Celebrating its 10th year Avenues Bistro owner and chef, Joe Birch, is expanding the restaurant’s decadent desserts list.

(MORE) NEW ROADS FOR AVENUES BISTRO Lobster ravioli. Au poivre burger. Boulevard beer-battered, tempura-style fish and chips. Mac and four cheese. German beer brats. Elvis waffle. French breakfast vol au vent. You won’t find these mouth-watering, diverse dishes at just any restaurant. It takes a finely tuned palate and an appreciation for world cuisine to piece together a menu such as the one at Avenues Bistro in Brookside.

of business, the restaurant is a local favorite for its eclectic, always-changing menu selections — not to mention the warm atmosphere and excellent service. And now, Birch is bringing that same passion for inventiveness and excellence to extending the restaurant’s decadent dessert line. Like the rest of the menu, Birch will always offer some of the customer favorites, but also a selection of desserts that change frequently — as often as every week. (cont. on page 16)

AROUND TOWN

CONT.

“When you combine the distinct flavor [of RumChata] with the innovative recipes of Avenues, the final product is wonderfully decadent and delicious,” says Tom Mass, RumChata founder and master blender. There are a few mainstays on the menu at the restaurant, like the popular cheesecake, but any dessert can be ordered as a full cake once a customer has tried it. And, the desserts are available through Avenues’ catering business, which serves events of all sizes. The restaurant also offers brunch on Saturdays and Sundays — nice for those of us whose schedules don’t allow for the easier-to-come-by “Sunday only” brunches in town. Happy hour, which offers both food and drink specials, is from 4 to 6 p.m. every day. Making things even sweeter, the restaurant recently entered a partnership with Agave Loco, makers of RumChata, the popular cream liqueur made from five-times-distilled Caribbean rum, cream, and just a touch of cinnamon as well as vanilla and other natural flavors. Avenues is developing a whole line of bold new desserts

Avenues is located at 338 W. 63rd St. in Kansas City, Missouri. Visit avenuesbistro.com to view the ever-changing menu, read the restaurant’s blog, and more. Cosentino’s Market has three locations: 10 E. 13th St. in Kansas City, Missouri; 14 W. 62nd Terrace in Kansas City, Missouri; and 8051 W. 160th St. in Overland Park.

featuring RumChata, such as cheesecake, chocolate gateau, and mousse cake. If you like your cake dry, these desserts aren’t for you. The fillings are layered with flavor, adding depth and dimension to a cloud-like cake that goes down almost too easily. “We even have a pie in the works,” says Catering Director Martha Valencia. “It’s one of the best things I’ve ever tasted. It’s so fun sharing these new desserts with our customers.” The RumChata deal was signed earlier this year and is still in its development phase, but word is spreading fast. In

ROW FOR IT

addition to ordering these specialty desserts at the restaurant, customers also can find them at local Cosentino’s Market grocery stores, where they sell for about $6 a slice. The plan is to take the cakes to the national market as early as this winter. Most of the recipe development happens at the restaurant’s official bakery, Avenues Classics, located in Kansas City, Kansas, so branding on the store-bought desserts bears that name. “RumChata’s rich blend of real flavors is a natural fit with our artisanal approach to desserts,” says Tony Birch, vice president of sales and marketing for the restaurant. “The first time we baked with it, we were blown away by the profile.” The folks at RumChata agree that the partnership couldn’t be more perfect.

Joey Mendez (at left) and Buck Wimberly are co-owners of Ulah, a men’s apparel, home furnishings, and accessories store in Westwood, Kansas.

MORE THAN A MEN’S CLOTHING STORE, ULAH’S A UNIQUE LIFESTYLE EXPERIENCE Upon first meeting Joey Mendez and Buck Wimberly, co-owners of Ulah, you’ll immediately sense two genuine, creative, engaging, and approachable individuals. When they opened the doors to this one-of-a-kind men’s apparel, home furnishings, and accessories store in October 2016, Mendez and Wimberly knew from the start they wanted to serve multiple dimensions of a man’s lifestyle. While some men dress for success, Ulah helps men dress for life. If you are a man or know one who can be both rooted and resilient, structured yet flexible, casual yet professional, and small-town yet cosmopolitan, then it’s time to move in the direction of Ulah. The unique is store

18

known for high style and impeccable design that’s both accessible and relevant to a man’s everyday life. You won’t get the usual shopping experience at Ulah. Instead, you should come prepared to indulge your senses in a more personal experience. No matter your style — even if you aren’t yet sure what that is — the experts at Ulah are ready to assist. You can be assured you’ll never feel rushed or pressured. You’ll simply feel welcome at a place where you are given the complete freedom to be yourself. That’s what customer Mark Ravis likes about the store. “Ulah is the best men’s store in Kansas City,” he says. “Besides being such genuine and approachable guys, Buck and Joey have really put a lot of thought into their store. They have a range of styles, price points, and products that make shopping easy.”

Located in Woodside Village in Westwood, Ulah carries not only a vast selection of apparel from local, national, and international sources, but also an extensive assortment of art, furniture, scents, grooming supplies, apothecary, decor, and other accessories. If you haven’t found what you’ve been searching for, chances are you will discover it here. “We felt a void in the market for a small men’s store that offers more of an experience,” says Wimberly, who formerly worked in various design disciplines and was a brand strategist at Hallmark Cards. Coupled with Mendez’s past experience as a buyer for men’s contemporary wear at Halls, these gentlemen have successfully combined their professional backgrounds with their

modern design prowess, curating one of the most unique collections of apparel and goods in the metro area. And both gentlemen want to eliminate any misconceptions about their store when it comes to the customers it serves. “When a new store like this opens up, older men may assume it’s just for the younger guys,” Wimberly explains. “But we strategically pick a range of styles and sizes that will appeal to guys of all ages, allowing for a broad

mix of products.” However, it’s not just the selections, such as outerwear, shirts, sweaters, shoes, shorts, swimwear, suit separates, tees, denim, and chinos, that keep customers coming back for more. It’s the sincere personal service that makes a lasting impression. “We believe in getting to know people, learning their stories, assessing their needs, and solving their problems,” Mendez says. To that end, the owners of

The owners of Ulah knew from the start they wanted to serve multiple dimensions of a man’s lifestyle. While some men dress for success, Ulah helps men dress for life.

Ulah have found themselves addressing issues men face but perhaps don’t necessarily talk about, such as skin care, healthy eating habits, and overall wellness, giving Ulah the platform to become a trusted resource, as well. “We’re on a journey to wellness and want to invite customers to join us, so we tie in local experts who help us on that path,” Wimberly explains. Ulah’s wellness blog showcases experiences with other businesses in the area from which they believe their clientele will benefit. If you’re ready to embrace your own lifestyle, then visit Ulah at 4707 Rainbow Blvd. in Westwood, go online at ulahkc.com, or call 913.777.8734. Spiess loved it so much, she sought out that neighbor and asked for the recipe. What started as Teresa Siess’ home kitchen operation has snowballed into a thriving business, Cedar Street Toffee, which sells its sweet treats in several stores across the metro — and further.

“Out of a group of women cooking and sharing the toffee, an idea organically took off: This could be a business,” she

In particular, she enjoyed creating the packaging concepts: beautiful brown boxes, wrapped in festive bows — brown as the signature, red for the holiday season, and pink for a fun splash in the summertime.

“The company started here,” she says.

DECODING THE USE-BY/SELL-BY DATE Do you have any idea what the differences between “sell by,” “use by,” or “best if used by” exactly are? Are these food labels hard rules or just suggestions? We’ve all seen the minuscule labels on our food, yet it is still confusing when all we really want to know is whether a food is safe to eat or needs to be tossed. According to WebMD, the only foods required by federal law to be labeled for expiration are some baby foods and infant formula. Some states also mandate that dairy be pulled off the shelves after the expiration date, but that’s about it. The rest of the food labels are voluntary. If your usual methods are checking for mold or making your spouse take a whiff, there’s a better way. Here are

some explanations on what the labels mean and when food is no longer safe to eat. “Sell by” is a label that tells the stores how long they should display the food. Buyers can use this date to determine the freshest food on the shelf. (Reach for the stuff in the back.) The “best-ifused-by” or “best-before” date does not refer to a food’s safety, but rather its quality. Its quality is suggested to be at its best if eaten before this date. “Use by” is another label food manufacturers use to let buyers know when a food’s quality will start to diminish. Again, this is not an expiration date — merely a suggestion. Foods can still be eaten after this date, but the freshness and quality may not be as good.

Here’s how these dates impact the foods in your fridge.

DAIRY y EGGS

According to the Dairy Council, milk is still good a week after the sell-by date as long as it’s been continually refrigerated at fewer than 40 degrees. The organization suggests milk be stored in the main part of the fridge and not the door, as it tends to be warmer than the rest of the fridge. This may go without saying, but if milk begins to change in odor, flavor, or color, discard it. The refrigerator shelf life of cheese depends upon its type. Soft cheeses will last up to two weeks, while harder cheeses can make it fuzz-free for three to six months. And even though the sell-by date may have expired on the eggs in the fridge, they are still good for three to five weeks in the refrigerator.

POULTRYy MEAT

Lunchmeat is another one of those

refrigerator mysteries — how long is too long? Cold cuts are safe to eat a week after the use-by date. After that, toss them. Raw poultry should be kept in the fridge for a day or two after the purchase date before either cooking or freezing. Meat is good in the refrigerator for three to five days before it must be used or frozen. If you need to freeze, you should wrap the store-bought package tightly with heavy-duty aluminum foil, plastic wrap, or freezer paper to avoid freezer burn.

PANTRY GOODS

Boxed and canned goods typically have a use-by date and often contain preservatives to keep a longer shelf life. However, not all snacks are created equal. While potato chips are said to be good up to a month after the expiration date, popcorn can last up to one to two years. Canned goods usually have an expiration date and how long they last depends on the level of acidity in the food. High-acid

foods such as tomatoes won’t last as long as canned peas or canned carrots. Any containers that are dented or damaged in any way should be thrown away, regardless of date, because there may be food-borne illness. If you haven’t used the item by the expiration date, experts say you should pitch it. If you have a hard time keeping these guidelines straight, there are some places online you can check out to keep up on what is what. One of the most comprehensive sites to reference is Still Tasty (stilltasty.com). This website posts the shelf life of every possible food you can imagine with very credible sources such as the USDA, U.S. Food & Drug Administration, and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Ditch Your Collection of Eyebrow Pencils & Try Microblading If you’re like me, your makeup drawer has a rather nice collection of eyebrow pencils and beauty products designed to help you get your eyebrow game on point. As we all may know, having confident and symmetrical eyebrows is an integral part of your overall beauty routine, right? However, I typically don’t get mine to match up well, nor do I usually find the right color. As a result, I spend countless dollars on product after product trying to achieve the perfect frame for my face. Fortunately, there is a popular new treatment designed to give a significant boost to the overall aesthetic appeal of your eyebrows. Welcome to microblading,

the exciting manual procedure that is a form of semi-permanent tattooing. If you are ready to say goodbye to all those eyebrow products you’ve been collecting, microblading could be the answer for you.

With this state-of-the-art hand tool, the technician creates precise, hairlike strokes that are ingrained just into the top surface of your skin, not further down as with tattoo guns. Because the technician has so much control with this method, the strokes look more refined and precise.

The name might sound scary, but don’t worry. No one is going to use a scalpel to slice open your brow! Microblading is a manual technique of implanting pigment into the skin. This is done with a hand tool comprised of tiny needles that create a small blade used to deposit pigment just beneath the surface of the skin. (Topical anesthetic is used to numb the pain, which is not really as intense as you might think.) When done correctly, you may

Permanent makeup artist Michelle Vernon of RSVP Med Spa in Overland Park says the process is relatively simple. After an initial consultation, your brows are measured for symmetry and placement and several passes are made with the microblade on each brow. The technician custom blends the color, as it is important to have the ink match your brow hair color. The technician will then follow the hair (cont. on page 34)

growth pattern or where your hair placement would be if your brows are thinning or missing. The color will fade over time, usually after a year, and at that time, a simple color boost is required. “After your first visit, you will probably need a quick touchup in about eight weeks and then about a year later for the boost,” she says. Despite the relative simplicity of the process, Vernon emphasizes this procedure should be done by someone who is trained and certified in the technique. She says it should be done in a doctor’s office setting.

The perfect candidate for microblading is someone who may have thinning or missing brows and wants a more defined look without the daily hassle of drawing out brows. However, there are certain medical conditions that could put you at a higher risk for contraindications. Additionally, if you are pregnant or nursing or are using Retin-A, you should not consider microblading. If you are in doubt, please consult your physician before undergoing this procedure. It’s important to ensure you don’t have any illnesses that could prevent the procedure from working out favorably with your skin. Dazja Stuckey, owner of Beauté Finish Cosmetic studio in Brookside, considers microblading a fairly safe procedure, 12:35 PM but strongly advises a thorough initial consultation. “It is best to ensure the client has no existing conditions or contraindications that would create a problem,” she explains. “For example, if you are on medication that thins your blood, you would not be a good candidate for this.”

The healing process for microblading may vary with each individual, and Stuckey notes that, between your first and second session, your skin undergoes a skin cell turnover process that takes about 28 days. During this time, your brows may seem as if they have disappeared and then come back. This is completely normal. An additional detailing session should be done six to eight weeks later, with a touch up in a year, which could be required sooner if you have oily skin. Getting the right color is equally important. “It’s best to match the color as close to the natural eyebrow color as possible,” Stuckey says. “If it is darker or lighter, it can create a shadow in the brows.” Your brow color is very much a personal choice and having them tinted is a commitment, but when done by a certified technician, the results make your brows look naturally amazing.

strawberries, sweet bell peppers, and tomatoes. “This isn’t a ‘do not eat’ list. It’s simply a list of conventional fruits and vegetables that are shown to have the highest levels of pesticides after washing.” If you want to try switching your diet to an organic diet, Teska recommends starting with the dirty dozen. When switching to organic, make sure you know your labels. There are three types of organic labels you will find in a grocery store: Single-ingredient 100% certified organic (excluding salt and water): This would be something like an apple in the organic section. The PLU sticker will tell you if the product is organic. If the PLU code sticker is a five-digit number starting with 9, you’ll know it’s organic. The “USDA Organic” seal: This label means 95% of the ingredients are organic ingredients. The other 5% comes from a list of criteria the USDA does not consider organic. “Made with organic ingredients”: This label means 70% of the ingredients are organic and the remaining 30% is from the same list of criteria the USDA does not consider organic. The certification process to become a USDA-certified organic farmer isn’t easy. “If you’re a conventional farmer, it’s a threeyear process to make the switch to a certified organic farmer,” she explains. “There are fees associated with being an organic farmer, which is why the price point is higher than conventional. And, sometimes you will see a ‘transitional organic’ label on produce if a farmer is making the switch.” The saying “know your farmer” is not as easy as it used to be. But there’s a secret to finding out where your food is coming from. “Consumers should get to know the produce manager in their local store,” Teska says. “The produce manager will know your farmer for you. It’s their job to know where the produce is coming from. And, sometimes local farmers will follow organic practices even though they never go through with the certification process because the cost is too high. Local farmers typical-

BECAUSE I SAID SO ...

FIFTH-GRADE CRUSH Are you smarter than a fifth-grader? My husband, Scott, is not. This isn’t an article about my daughter’s fifth-grade homework. It’s about Scott failing. My daughter, Emma, is a talker. She likes to tell me all the details about her school day. After school recently, Emma told me they had a meteorologist from Kansas City’s KSHB 41 Action News talk to her class. The fifth grade is finishing up their weather unit. Emma: And guess what? She said Gary Lezak works with her. He is the chief meteorologist. When she asked the class for questions, I told her you interviewed Gary Lezak for your magazine! Me: You did?! What did she say? Emma: She asked which magazine and I told her SIMPLYkc. And you’re a writer. She said that’s cool.

Me: Oh, yeah. It was her then.

Me: How do you know she’s tall?

Me: I didn’t know she was having a guest speaker. Maybe the school doesn’t tell us about the guest speakers because of the stalker dads. I hear you watch the weather every morning but I didn’t know that you’re watching Lindsey Anderson.

Scott: Here, I’ll pull up a picture. I don’t know. She seems like she would be tall.

Scott: I know when she repeats her outfits now.

Scott smiled at his phone.

Me: WHAT! Are you giddy?

Me: Hmm. I never notice people’s height, I guess. Tall?

Scott: She’s my new crush.

Scott: Lindsey Anderson?! Me: How do you remember her name? Scott: Emma, is she really tall?

Scott: Here. Is this her, Emma? Daddy’s favorite forecast lady? The meteorologist I watch first thing in the morning? Sometimes twice. Me: WHAT? Scott: Here, look. Lindsey Anderson. Emma: Yeah, that’s her. Scott: Yeah, my favorite. I wish I would have known that. I would have taken you lunch. See, look how much taller she is than everyone else standing with her. I knew it. She’s tall.

Me: Aw, that’s fun! Hey Scott! Emma said that female meteorologist from Channel 41 came to their school. Emma told her I interviewed Gary Lezak. Isn’t that funny?

Me: ...

Scott: Which meteorologist?

Scott: No.

Me: I assume that morning one. She’s really pretty … You know. What’s-hername. Hey, Emma! Did she say what time she wakes up in the morning?

Me: Give it to me.

Emma: She said she wakes up at 1:30 in the morning.

Illness, traveling, fever, and sleep deprivation can trigger sleepwalking, or there may even be an underlying disorder such as sleep apnea. “We don’t recommend waking the child up while they’re sleepwalking,” Dr. Al-Shawwa explains. “They will be confused and the child might become embarrassed, which will increase their anxiety level. Sometimes children can become aggressive if a parent tries to wake them.” A sleepwalking child can put themselves in harm’s way if left to roam the house. Dr. Al-Shawwa says locks on the outside of your child’s door or a baby gate may help keep her and your family safe. When should parents call a doctor? If she is sleepwalking on a nightly basis. Your child will need to be evaluated to make sure there isn’t an underlying disorder. Most children will outgrow sleepwalking and will never need to see a doctor.

Sleep terrors

Sleep terrors (also called night terrors) are episodes of screaming, intense fear, and flailing while asleep. A sleep terror is loud and can be shocking to parents. Much like sleepwalking, sleep terrors occur during deep, non-REM sleep. This disorder is most common in children ages 1 through 4 years. The difference between a sleep terror and a dream or nightmare is the stage of sleep it occurs. Your child will not remember having a sleep terror, but he will remember a nightmare. The triggers can be similar to sleepwalking.

INTERRUPTED SLEEP Watching your child sleep can be one of the most rewarding parts of parenthood. But occasionally, parents run into some concerns. Dr. Bahauddin Al-Shawwa, director of the Children’s Mercy Pediatric Sleep Medicine department, answers some questions about common sleep condi-

tions in children and when your child needs to see a doctor.

Sleepwalking

Sleepwalking is a common benign disorder. In fact, Dr. Al-Shawwa says, sleepwalking occurs in up to 10% of children. Sleepwalking usually happens in the first part of the night. Older children, ages 6 through 12, are most susceptible. Sleepwalking occurs in the deep, non-REM sleep — not the dreaming state of sleep.

“I tell parents to make sure children are in a safe environment,” Dr. Al-Shawwa says. “The child can move intensely in the bed. Since this disorder happens in smaller children, putting up a crib is a good idea. Parents should never wake up a child having a sleep terror; the sleep terror should go away quickly.” When should you call a doctor? If the sleep terrors occur on a nightly basis or if episodes occur more than once a night. “It’s difficult for a parent to tell a sleep terror from a seizure.

Seizures have a rhythmic pattern to the body. A sleep terror is more erratic,” Dr. Al-Shawwa says. “Seizures generally happen several times a night while a sleep terror is usually once.”

Bedwetting

Most children should stop wetting the bed by 5 years old. After 5 or 6 years, physicians will start looking for an underlying problem. In most cases, bedwetting is most likely a benign disorder that often occurs in families. “Half of the children who wet the bed have a mother or father that was also delayed in staying dry through the night,” he explains. When a child wets the bed, her brain is simply in a deep sleep. “This is one of the disorders where we encourage the parents to wake a child at least once in the night so she can empty her bladder,” Dr. Al-Shawwa advises. “We want to train the brain to mature and ‘wake up’ a child when the bladder is full.” Limiting liquids

three hours before bed and bed alarms — a pad placed under the child that sounds when it senses liquid — can help. When should you call a doctor? Mention bedwetting to your primary care pediatrician if your child is over 5. A pediatrician can rule out bladder issues, urinary tract infections, and check kidney function. If overall health is normal, most children will grow out of this habit.

Sleep apnea/snoring

Sleep apnea is when a child stops breathing during sleep. Snoring is the first symptom of sleep apnea. “Does snoring lead to sleep apnea or does sleep apnea lead to snoring? We don’t know,” Dr. Al-Shawwa says. Bedwetting, sweating at night, and morning headaches are also symptoms of sleep apnea. “When a child’s quality of sleep is disturbed, he will be drowsy during the day. Sleep apnea disrupts sleep because even

though the child is sleeping, the brain is ‘waking up’ to force him to start breathing again,” he explains. “Sometimes when a child is tired, he can become hyper and inattentive at school. This can be confused with Attention Deficit Disorder when he may have sleep apnea.” When should you call a doctor? Snoring on its own is not a concern, but if the snoring is frequent or combined with hyperactivity at school or bedwetting, mention it to your pediatrician. Your doctor can evaluate if your child needs further testing. Although rare, sleep apnea can be life-threatening if ignored because it can affect your child’s heart and oxygen levels. When it comes to all children and sleep, Dr. Al-Shawwa recommends putting the kids on a consistent sleep schedule. Many sleep issues can be fixed if your child is getting plenty of good, quality sleep.

GOOD TASTES

Written by Gina Reardon | Photo by Adrienne Maples

Savory Fall Salad Let’s talk turkey … I mean Thanksgiving. The holiday that looms on all our calendars. The official beginning of the “holiday season.” The day when families gather and give thanks for all that is meaningful in their lives. And it’s also a celebration of good food laden with expectation — and, in some families, a struggle to recreate family favorites while being open to trying something new for the one family member who is bored with a menu set on repeat. That would be me. Our family Thanksgiving gath-

ering usually hovers around 35 people, so I always volunteer to make a vegetable or salad (and a dessert of course). That way, I can be sure my plate has something green on it, with texture — not just a sea of brown that barely requires chewing. One of my favorite fall and winter salads has a bit everything — leafy greens, roasted butternut squash croutons, dried cranberries, sliced apples, hazelnuts or pecans, and a lovely honey balsamic vinaigrette. Enjoy the holiday, friends!

Mixed Greens With Butternut Squash Croutons & Honey Balsamic Vinaigrette Yield: 6 servings VINAIGRETTE INGREDIENTS 4 tablespoons of balsamic vinegar 1/2 cup mild olive oil 1 teaspoon kosher salt 1/2 teaspoon coarse ground pepper 1 tablespoon honey

VINAIGRETTE DIRECTIONS

Combine balsamic vinegar, salt, and pepper in a small bowl. Add olive oil in a very thin stream, whisking constantly to emulsify. Add honey and whisk to combine.

SALAD INGREDIENTS 12 c ups washed and spun, and torn salad greens, chilled 1/4 red onion sliced very thin 3c ups butternut squash, peeled, seeded, and cut into 3/4-inch pieces (toss with 3 TB of mild olive oil, place on a baking sheet, sprinkle with kosher salt and coarse pepper, and roast in a 400° oven for 20 to 25 minutes until squash can be pierced with a fork. It should not be mushy. Let cool.) 1G ranny Smith or Honeycrisp apple, cut into quarters, cored and cut into thin slices. Plunge into a cup of cold water with the juice of a half of a lemon to keep from browning, and drain well. 1/2 cup dried cranberries 1/2 c up toasted hazelnuts (skins removed) or pecans, coarsely chopped 5 ounces Chevre, a mild goat cheese, crumbled at the last minute (optional)

SALAD DIRECTIONS Combine the greens, red onion, and 6 tablespoons of honey-balsamic vinaigrette in a large bowl and toss until the lettuce is just barely coated with a “whisper” of dressing. Add butternut squash croutons, apple slices, dried cranberries, and toss gently. Top with nuts and crumble goat cheese over the top.

APP OF THE MONTH

TRAFFICKCAM HELPS PREVENT SEX TRAFFICKING The gist: If you’re headed to a hotel this holiday season, make sure to download this app, which was developed in 2015 at Wash-

ington University in St. Louis. TraffickCam enables you to help combat sex trafficking by uploading photos of hotel rooms. Just enter your hotel name, room number, and up to four photos of the room. Photos are uploaded to a national database of images used by police who are tracking sex trafficking rings. Features such as patterns in the carpeting, furniture, room accessories, and window views are matched against photos of sex trafficking victims posed in hotel rooms. More than 2.8 million photos of 158,000 hotels in every major U.S. city have been uploaded. TraffickCam doesn’t store any personally identifying information other than your phone’s GPS location. Any images that include people are rejected from the database. The app is free and available for iOS and Android devices.

1. T AKE ADVANTAGE OF YOUR WAIT TIMES

article in the 2010 issue of Journal Experimental Psychology: Learning, Memory, and Cognition suggests talking aloud also helps with memory retention.

If you’re putting off working on a project because you have a meeting in 15 minutes … scratch that line of thinking. You’ll probably be able to get more done in that time than you think.

4. U NDER-PROMISE AND OVER-DELIVER Budget your time, but be careful to not underestimate how much time a project might take you. For each big project, pad your budgeted time with 30 to 60 extra minutes. You may not need it, but it will help you not feel so rushed.

2. T ACKLE BIG PROJECTS ON RAINY DAYS A study completed in 2014 suggests you might be more focused on the task at hand on bad-weather days. Maybe this doesn’t come as a surprise to you — but when the weather is beautiful, you’re more likely to daydream about frolicking outside.

5. T AKE FUN BREAKS DURING THE DAY If you’re having problems finishing a project, give yourself a break. Take a walk to clear your mind, play a couple games of Candy Crush, or watch silly cat videos. Playing and/or laughing might help you

3. GIVE YOURSELF A PEP TALK Talking out loud can help you refocus and improve concentration. And, an

come up with creative solutions.

6. STOP MULTITASKING Tossing in a load of laundry while talking to a friend probably won’t throw you off your game. But, according to the American Psychological Association, even brief mental blocks created by shifting between tasks can cost as much as 40% of your productive time. Multitasking is also bad for the kiddos: Research suggests it may change the way they learn.

7. LET GO OF YOUR NEED FOR PERFECTION Whether you’re working on a project at the office or cleaning your house, you might never, ever reach perfection. If you can be OK with good enough — you’ll be ahead of the game.
