Memorable Holiday Hostess Gifting Arriving at a holiday gathering empty-handed is a fa-la-la-faux pas. Selecting a thoughtful and beautifully presented gift is a great way to ensure you’re always at the top of the party invitation list for next year. Impress with a bottle of wine topped with a cheerful felt deer ornament that can later be hung on the holiday tree. Fetch favor from a pet owner host or hostess with a clever plush toy shaped like luxe champagne. You’ll be toasted for your fine gift-giving prowess.

KACIE TURKEY POLITICS

This is such a cliché question for the holidays, but I can’t stand the politics talk at the Thanksgiving dinner table. It turns into a fight every year. It’s so bad that I don’t want to go this year. Is it rude to skip my family Thanksgiving?

Well, I’m not your mom but I bet your mom would want you to join the family on Thanksgiving. That being said, no one should debate the big three at the dinner table: money, religion, and politics. Here’s the deal, no one is changing anyone’s mind. It’s uncomfortable to have conflicts with family—especially family you might not see very often—during what is supposed to be a celebration. When someone brings up politics, try changing the subject. I’m not sure if that will work, but you should at least try to direct the conversation to something else, anything else. “Hey, how about those Chiefs?” If that doesn’t work and the family won’t back off, ask the repeat offender (there’s always one) if you could speak to them privately. Ask them to stay away from the subject and focus on things you love about each other. If all else fails, repeat after me: “Happy Thanksgiving and see ya next year!” It’s one day out of the year. Can you pass the impeachment … I mean peach … pie, please?

If you have any questions you’d like Kacie to answer, submit them to contact@simplykcmag.com.

HOW TO HOST

A FALL HARVEST FRIENDS GATHERING WRITTEN BY JULIE BURTON PHOTOS BY SAMANTHA LEVI

T

he days are crisp and the nights cool. Welcome to November in Kansas City. November marks the beginning of the hustle and bustle of the holiday season. Thanksgiving Day is generally reserved for time with family, but Friendsgiving is a time to gather and deepen our friendships with our chosen families. You don’t need a holiday to inspire a magical dinner party with friends. Friendships can be celebrated any time of year, but kicking off the holiday season with a little gratitude for the ones closest to you is a perfect start to raising your glass. But with so many recipes floating around, fall dinner party menu ideas, and crafting projects that may go Pinterest-fail wrong, where do you begin? We have the answer your guests will be talking about long after the party’s over. Will Brown from Will Brown Interiors adores this time of year because he not only delights in attending holiday parties, but hosting a few as well. Start the fireplaces and take notes for your friendsgiving gathering.

Decide on a host house Your party doesn’t need to be your party. Make it a group party. Collaborate with your friends to see who will offer up their home for the feast. The setting will set the tone, whether it’s quirky and whimsical or edgy and modern. Find a space with lots of natural light, great energy, and inspiring décor.

Set the tone with décor Brown is a believer in “less is more” for fall décor. For his friends gathering, he was inspired by the prairie grasses of the Midwest. He clipped natural grasses from the yard of the party hostess and tucked them into a natural grapevine wreath for her front door. Using natural elements from the outdoors is an easy and inexpensive way to decorate. “The fall elements will dry natucontinued on page 16

Serve your guests If you don’t own china, search estate sales for simple white china or even mix and match a collection for a more casual setting. Searching the West Bottoms for simple serving ware is also a fun option. Prepare the menu The easiest way to cook on the day of your party is with preparation. Prepare your dishes ahead of time so you can reheat them on the day of the party. Brown invited his friend and fellow Kansas City foodie Jo Marie Scaglia, owner and creator of The Mixx and Caffetteria of Kansas City, to collaborate on this year’s meal. What a delectable final menu it turned out to be: an appetizer of herb-roasted assorted

A sparkling spiced apple cider—spiked with a local bourbon—makes for a classic signature drink as well. To add a special touch, Brown printed out Scaglia’s menu to fit the covers of small journals, which he wrapped with twine, added sage herbal leaves tucked in for fragrance, and used as place settings. Encourage everyone to write something they’re grateful for about each person. A gratitude journal is a simple and thoughtful keepsake for each guest, and the

Dress for a picture-perfect party “For a party there’s no reason you can’t request your guests to wear a certain color palette,” suggests Brown. People will want to take photos for social media, and the final look will pull the party together and ensure the pictures look elevated and stylish. It makes for taking better photographs for even better memories. Ask your guests to wear complementary clothing such as corduroys and tweeds in earth tones. Consider adding in pops of blue to contrast the browns and oranges.

PHOENIX NATURAL WELLNESS:

THE MIRACLE PLANT INDUSTRY HERE TO STAY WRITTEN BY NATALIE CHRISTIE MCGOVERN / PHOTOS BY JAMI MARSHALL

Are you looking for a way to de-stress, a relaxer to relieve some anxiety from your hectic schedule, or a way to help with your pain? While it may be an unconventional method, a CBD product could be right for you. CBD products are derived from the cannabis plant and are currently being called a powerful remedy for a variety of ailments. In fact, several businesses have opened in the metro area to service a growing population seeking this natural antidote. CBDinfused products—from creams to gummies—are becoming more prevalent in the mainstream market. Phoenix Natural Wellness, located in Overland Park, Lenexa, Belton, and Ottawa, is at the forefront of this breakthrough. Opened in October 2017, Phoenix Natural Wellness already has five store locations and is gaining momentum in this ever-growing industry. Phoenix Natural Wellness adds a personal and holistic approach by helping consumers with medical challenges not remedied by conventional methods. The name Phoenix refers to the transformation of a journey, and each customer is treated with personalized care to improve their health and happiness along their personal journey. Brian Pitts, co-owner of Phoenix Natural Wellness, had his own personal journey that led him to the discovery of CBD and its uses. He struggled with discomfort as well as hereditary health conditions. But with his discovery of CBD, he and his wife Susan Pitts decided to reeducate consumers on the medicinal benefits of cannabis—from its ben-

Each customer is treated with personalized care to improve their health and happiness along their personal journey.

When it comes to suppliers, Brian and Susan vet all the companies down to the growing procedures and the soil the hemp is grown in. Hemp has been found to be highly absorbent of toxins, so he makes sure what he is acquiring is free of pollutants and pesticides. Lab results are also acquired to ensure the levels of CBD being produced and the batches are matched to guarantee consistency.

Reception has been positive. Brian worried about how the general public would view the industry, given there was limited CBD presence in the area. But Phoenix Natural Wellness has found its niche in the community and has been welcomed with open arms, even joining the local Chamber of Commerce.

Brian and Susan gave some insight into the rapidly growing, billiondollar CBD industry. They explained that industrial hemp, which CBD is made from, is cannabidiol. This is a

“CBD is a very complex industry with a lot of products, a lot of potential uses, and varying dosages,” explains Brian. “It can be overwhelming navigating which product is best for you and what dosage you should take. We require our staff to obtain CBD certification, and we have a ton of educational materials in the stores.” The Farm Bill, or Agricultural Improvement Act, was passed in 2018 to legalize the cultivation and sale of hemp, and since being implemented the sale of these products has exploded. The Controlled Substance Act still stands in effect, although CBD products are not currently being regulated by the FDA. Still, physicians often recommend the cannabis option as a medical alternative to pharmaceuticals. Patients being prescribed CBD can be confident they are steered in the right direction by

getting a seal of approval from the medical community. CBD has been shown to demonstrate a wide range of medicinal benefits. The absence of THC also negates the risk of failing a drug test, which is good news for those seeking anxiety medication alternatives. Accredited by the Better Business Bu-

reau and recently named “Best CBD Store” in the Best of KC contest by The Pitch, Phoenix Natural Wellness’ brand speaks to the quality and integrity of the products being marketed. Each batch is pure, organically grown from the soil, and void of harmful pesticides or chemicals. And with that integrity in mind, Phoenix Natural Wellness adheres to several core business pillars:

transparency, integrity, quality, education, and affordability. Phoenix Natural Wellness carries an assortment of products such as CBD VG tinctures, topical pain creams, soaps, CBD-infused massage oils, and soluble drink mixes. There is something for everyone in the lineup of products, so be sure to consider Phoenix Natural Wellness for your CBD necessities.

Hollywood often portrays emergency rooms as hectic, disorganized places where you can be stuck in a cubicle and forgotten about for hours. But what happens in a real ER is a long way from that. So let’s clear up some of the most common myths and misconceptions, and put an end to the concerns that might stop you from going to your local ER when you need it most.

MYTH 1: You’re going to be ignored for hours. The fact is, everyone in the ER department is highly motivated to treat patients quickly. “We utilize a system of triage during high volume times,” says John Bradley, DO, medical director for AdventHealth Shawnee Mission’s Emergency Department. “It allows us to quickly categorize the critical/unstable patients from the stable patients, so we can treat everyone in a safe, efficient manner.” To give you a general idea, the average wait time to see a physician is only seven minutes for the ERs at AdventHealth South Overland Park and AdventHealth Lenexa, and just slightly longer at the AdventHealth Shawnee Mission ER on 75th Street.

MYTH 2: The ER is disorganized and inefficient.

AdventHealth Shawnee Mission has three ER locations in the Kansas City area.

“It may not look like it to an outsider, but to those of us inside the ER, everything is extremely organized and focused on providing each patient the most appropriate care as soon as possible,” says Bradley. ERs offer care for patients of all ages with almost all conditions. AdventHealth emergency rooms are fully staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week by board-certified physicians and registered nurses who are qualified to treat all urgent cases. Facilities include radiology and lab services, pharmacy and ambulance. “For those conditions requiring full hospitalization, we can easily arrange admission to the hospital from the ER, including our free-standing emergency departments in Lenexa and South Overland Park,” says Bradley.

“The bottom line is when you come to the ER, you’ll experience the best medicine today’s health care system has to offer.”

MYTH 3: You should only consider taking your child to a pediatric ER. All board-certified ER physicians receive extensive training in pediatric emergencies, so you can be confident they are fully prepared to deal with these emergencies. When your child has an allergic reaction, an animal bite, or a sudden fever, you don’t have the time to get an appointment with a regular pediatrician. It’s important to get to your local ER for fast, effective care. “Because of our high volume of pedicontinued on page 22

atrics, we have a very close relationship with Children’s Mercy Hospital,” says Bradley. “So if a child does require hospitalization, we can arrange admission straight into CMH.”

MYTH 4: The ER provides a different level of care for someone without insurance. Many people believe that without insurance, they won’t get treated in the ER. But since 1986, emergency medical providers are required by federal law to provide a medical screening exam regardless of insurance status or ability to pay. This examination is performed prior to obtaining financial status or insurance information. “At AdventHealth KC, we’ve always provided emergency care to our com-

munity, regardless of ability to pay,” says Bradley. “Everyone is treated with the highest level of care here by our ER medical professionals. That’s our mission—to help our community feel whole.”

Don’t let ER myths get in the way of getting the treatment you need. Volunteers can host a diaper drive and deliver the diapers to Happy Bottoms, which will then distribute packages to their local partners.

5 R escue fruits and veggies at Kansas City-area farms. From May through November on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday mornings, volunteers can join nonprofit After the Harvest and go

out to the fields to pick the fruits and vegetables that are left over following the harvest. These foods are donated to agencies that serve food-insecure people. aftertheharvestkc.org

6 B uild “happy kits” for patients at Children’s Mercy. Children’s Mercy’s happy kits help the children at the hospital feel welcome and more comfortable during their stay. Happy kits can include a coloring book, crayons, card game, books, magazines, and more. childrensmercy.org

KC’S FAVORITE BRAZILIAN: BENNY FEILHABER

WRITTEN BY JULIE BURTON / PHOTOS BY SPORTINGKC

Benny Feilhaber can’t get enough of Kansas City. He’s Sporting KC’s midfielder, and he’s spent some of the best years of his career wearing Sporting blue. He left last year only to return to Kansas City this year. We sat down with Feilhaber to tell him how we can’t get enough of him either.

PARENTING

CARING FOR YOUR BABY ON A BUDGET WRITTEN BY T.E. CUNNINGHAM

C

ongratulations, you’re pregnant!” exclaims your beaming OBGYN. Okay, in today’s world it’s more likely you are looking at a plastic tube with a couple of blue lines or a pink plus sign, but either way you are going to have a baby. I remember the feeling of “jonic” (joy plus panic) when I learned I was pregnant. I was excited but worried about how I would figure out all those baby things. I also worried about all those new baby expenses. There is no manual for parenting, but the resources today are at an all-time high in terms of availability, accessibility, and affordability. If you need parenting advice, products, nursery decor inspiration, health tips, educational guidance, and more, it’s easy to obtain without breaking the bank. There are many affordable, helpful resources for brand new mothers and fathers that you should know about.

First, find a pediatrician The first and most obvious step is finding a pediatrician. You can certainly ask other moms or your current doctor for references, but there is also a great online resource with Children’s Mercy Hospital called Find-a-Provider (childrensmercy.org/ find-a-provider).

Now it’s time to register and shop When it comes to furniture for babies in Kansas City, some of the best values are Nebraska Furniture Mart, Buy Buy Baby, and Target. And if you are a single mom, locally owned custom-made furniture operator Unruh Furniture has a special program where they give moms in need assistance as well as a kitchen table through The Mom Fund (unruhfurniture.com/momfund).

Next up, clothing If you are limited on spending, the discount stores we know and love such as Walmart, Target, Big Lots, and dollar stores all have value-based baby sections. Another alternative, though, is to buy gently used clothing and sell it back when your baby outgrows it. Ask any mother and she will tell you she didn’t even use every outfit before her baby outgrew it. Many newborns bypass the 0-3 month clothing, and some even bypass the 3-6 month clothing, so you may have brand new items to return or sell to a gently used store. A few good ones in the area include:

Once Upon a Child offers

the latest in gently used brand name clothes, shoes, toys, books, and equipment. continued on page 30

Now let’s talk about emotional support and advice At times parenting can feel like you are up against a challenge all by yourself. You are not. “Being a first-time mom is full of these odd realities,” advises Catherine Craig, licensed specialist clinical social worker. “On the one hand, it feels like these are the best moments of your life, while on the other, it’s a time of profound fear and anxiety.”

Craig says that many find comfort in support groups. “You may feel like you are the only one experiencing this wide range of emotions. The one thing that is critical to managing these moments is support. Connecting with other moms and knowing you are not alone makes a big difference,” she explains. Fellow new moms in your area can be found on Facebook, and they are waiting to lend an ear or offer a tip or two. These groups offer information regarding local resources, businesses, events, pregnancy, toddlers, babies, brands, and more. Some of them also feature Meetup events.

INFOCUS

BUBBLECONEZ:

A FRIENDLY FACE FINDS A NEW LOCATION WRITTEN BY MADISON OBERMEYER / PHOTOS BY JAMI MARSHALL

Walk into BubbleConeZ in Leawood’s Town Center and a familiar, sweet ice cream smell wafts through the room. But with a quick glance around, it’s easy to tell this isn’t a typical ice cream shop; a glass case filled with warped dessert creations shows the endless possibilities—and the creativity—that is encouraged. A swollen version of an ice cream cone—the Hong Kong-style waffle, or gai daan jai—is an egg-based waffle treat often served alone, with ice cream, or with whipped cream. “Bubbles” are crispy to the touch, yet soft inside, and break off with ease into bite-size pieces. BubbleConeZ offers four waffle flavors: matcha, cinnamon, chocolate, and regular. Annie Liu, BubbleConeZ’ owner, makes each treat with individuality, often recommending samples of the ice cream flavors to customers before presenting the finished cone. “I always ask people if their ice cream is good or not. They can let us know and we will change it,” Liu says. “Some people are really nice and they’ll say everything is good, but what if they don’t come back? I want to do whatever I can to make them happy.” The ice cream is made fresh every day and features both Asian-inspired flavors like taro, Thai tea, lychee, and matcha, and other unique flavors like green apple, coconut, cheesecake, and pomegranate, the latter of which Liu says customers like for its flavor and health benefits. “Some customers walk in and see that we serve different ice cream flavors like lychee, and they get so

excited to see those interesting flavors,” Liu says. “We hope people will come to the store and try something really unique.”

As Liu creates a bubble cone filled with ice cream, she works quickly, like an artist in the midst of a creative breakthrough. Isabel Lauby, a BubbleConeZ customer, explains that she kept seeing Hong Kong-style ice creams all over Instagram travel accounts. “They are just so interesting to look at and make for a great picture, but I never thought I’d be able to get something here in Kansas City that people eat when traveling overseas.” Liu’s husband supports her in the business and helps think of new ideas to bring to the menu, like their Japanese-style savory or sweet crepes served crispy or soft, giving BubbleConeZ far more than just desserts. If you’re looking for lunch or dinner options, you can choose from Korean barbecue beef, shrimp avocado, or teriyaki chicken crepes. Sweeter options include fruit bouquet, ba-

nana strawberry, and classic Nutella. There’s also cotton candy for the kids (or any adult with a nostalgic sweet tooth), fruit sodas similar to smoothies, and bubble sodas served with soda water or Sprite. As Liu creates a bubble cone filled with ice cream, she works quickly, like an artist in the midst of a creative breakthrough. She suggests flavor combinations and offers sliced fruit toppings like confetti. The result is a representation of herself as much as it is the country she came from. “We came to the United States over 30 years ago and have been in Kansas City for almost 23 years,” Liu shares. “We like to be able to do something for people, to give them something.” As families and couples begin to trickle in for a savory crepe or pre-dinner treat, Liu recognizes familiar faces and welcomes them back. If she hasn’t met a customer yet, she asks how they heard about her shop. Prior to Town Center, BubbleConeZ was located in Oak Park Mall. When that lease expired, Liu made the decision to change locations. Some customers thought BubbleConeZ had simply shut down, she explains. “I had a customer text me and ask when I was opening again because

Annie Liu, owner

she wanted to come and see me,” Liu says. “She said she kept looking for me in Oak Park Mall and didn’t know we had moved to Town Center.” Customers have even helped Liu create new pages for the Town Center location on Google and Yelp, giving back the kindness she eagerly shares. “Sixteen years ago, we went back to

do this to let people know about our country.”

my country one last time. My daughter was about nine years old,” Liu explains. “Now my daughter is almost 25. But we always face forward. We

When discussing the possibility of more BubbleConeZ locations—or even new concepts like a homemade noodle shop—Liu is hopeful, but she says it all depends on the people. “The customers are like my family. I’m so lucky. I’m so happy,” Liu laughs.

BEAUTY

YOUR BODY IS TALKING ARE YOU LISTENING?

WRITTEN BY REBECCA FISCHER

It seems like every day our life is inundated with distractions: more items on our to-do list, social media to catch up on, and tasks at work or around the house. In our busy lives, it can be hard to catch signals our bodies send us to let us know something is amiss. It’s these signals, though, that can prevent louder signals from being necessary. For two decades, local spiritual mentor LaShonda Brown has been finely tuning her ability to read not only signals from her own body, but from others’ as well. She is a certified practitioner of the BodyTalk WholeHealthcare™ System, which is based on the belief that the body can heal itself, stress impacts overall health, and the body communicates via energetic circuitry.

Three ways your body talks to you There are several areas of the body that give people the most signals. These include your eyes and vision, your skin and touch, and your belly. Eyes and vision. Have you ever had your eyesight change for no apparent reason? Maybe all of a sudden you see weird lights or specks. As with other signs from the body, major medical conditions should be ruled out first. But according to Brown, most vision issues are simply your body’s way of communicating a stress signal to you.

34

|

SIMPLYkc MAGAZINE

|

NOVEMBER 2019

“I went through a period of weeks where I was having all sorts of weird things happen with my vision,” says Brown. “At first it freaked me out, but when I was quiet and asked myself, ‘Okay, what am I not wanting to see right now?’ I started dealing with the root issue.” When eye and vision issues pop up, Brown recommends asking yourself questions like “What am I avoiding in my life right now?” Skin and touch. You might naturally have dry skin or notice your skin gets dry when you’ve been in the sun. What you want to pay attention to, though, is changes in your usual skin or sense of touch. “That includes everything from noticing that certain fabrics feel weird to breaking out in a certain spot on your body,” explains Brown. One of the first places where emotional issues or poor dietary choices show up is in the skin. Take changes in the skin as a sign that it’s time to make a lifestyle change. The belly. Maybe you’re a little older and are developing a bit of a belly. Isn’t this a normal part of aging? Not necessarily, according to Brown. Turns out the biggest nerve of the body—the vagus nerve—runs from the brain down the spinal cord into the gut. “Again, our emotions come into play,”

Defy Age With

Sleek Physique

she says. “This can show up as added weight around the abdomen, or as digestive issues.” The modern diet doesn’t help either. Processed foods contribute to an unhealthy microbiome, which can feed into a cycle of stress. You might not even feel stressed, but your body does.

One good way to listen Instead of trying to get rid of dry skin or bad digestion, take some time to tune in to your body. Especially if you’re someone who doesn’t get much time alone due to family or work life. If you’re in a relationship, Brown recommends spending at least one night in a bed separate from your partner. If that’s not possible, try taking a candlelit shower.

Reduces cellulite Tones loose skin

“Just close your eyes and let the water run over your head for at least 30 to 60 seconds,” says Brown. “Really try to tune into your body and notice any shifts. Breathe. Pause. Recognize what you’re experiencing as something different. Really take note of the feeling.”

Slims fat pockets Improves skin clarity Increases exfoliation

Another way to tune in to your body is to reflect on what your life dreams were when you were a child. How did these dreams make you feel?

Relives minor muscle aches & pains Increases blood circulation

“You can ask yourself if that’s possible for you now—that feeling—on a more regular basis,” says Brown. “Because it can be. It’s all about aligning your true self with the present moment over and over again.”

Decreases stress & anxiety Lowers blood pressure Releases endorphins Improves sleep quality

BECAUSE I SAID SO...

A THANKSGIVING PLANNER WRITTEN BY JULIE BURTON / PHOTOS BY SAMANTHA LEVI

TWO WEEKS BEFORE Tell yourself to stop stuffing your butterball butt with leftover Halloween candy. Wash the sheets and towels for your house guests. Say a prayer to sweet baby Jesus. Dear baby Jesus, please don’t let the kids and pets urinate, defecate, puke, spit, let a runny nose run, or splatter blood on the fresh sheets and towels. I cannot do any more laundry.

ONE WEEK BEFORE Throw away the seating chart because someone wrote “mommy is mean” on all the place cards. Clean out the fridge. Convince your kids you weren’t trying to kill them with a barbecue sauce that expired last winter. Hide the evidence of Halloween decor and the bags of Halloween candy.

THE MONDAY BEFORE Panic! Scream at the kids for not picking up a shoe. Apologize for blowing

up. Flip off your kid behind her back when she says, “It’s just a shoe, Cinderella’s evil stepmother.” Give your spouse a grocery list and regret this decision as soon as he pulls out of the driveway. Send your spouse back to the grocery store when he says he couldn’t find the green beans, fried onions, cranberry sauce, corn, milk, and juice for the kids.

out of bed. Navigate swarms of people with your shopping cart. Wonder if you could shoot a turkey if you were a pilgrim. Wonder if the pilgrims had guns. Wonder if the pilgrims strangled turkeys. Wonder if Native Americans celebrate Thanksgiving. Make a mental note to browse the History Channel’s website because you forgot what we’re celebrating.

THE TUESDAY BEFORE

THANKSGIVING

Order a pie from the local bakery. Scream at the family for eating all the groceries. Pour yourself a glass of merlot. Finish the bottle because you don’t want it turning into vinegar two nights from now. Tell yourself you’re basically a scientist for remembering wine turns into vinegar.

Heat up the pre-made appetizers and sides. Yell at your spouse for watching football. Apologize to Grandma for the profanities you called your husband but if any generation is going to break this sexist chain of Thanksgiving customs, it’s yours. Pour yourself a glass of wine. Pray no one gets diarrhea from the turkey thawing at room temperature. Take a picture of your plate. Add it to Instagram. #Thanksgivingdinner #thankful #family #blessed

THE WEDNESDAY BEFORE Make a list of all the sides you need while lying in bed watching the Hallmark Channel’s Christmas movies. Get

Directions SautĂŠ the onions and red bell peppers in 6 tablespoons of butter in a large skillet over high heat until soft, about 4 minutes. Add the garlic and cook for 2 minutes, stirring. Add the mushrooms, Essence, and thyme and cook, stirring occasionally, until the mushrooms are soft and have released their liquid, about 6 minutes. Sprinkle with the flour and cook, stirring for 2 minutes. Add the wine and chicken stock and cook, stirring, until smooth and thick, about 2 minutes. Add the heavy cream and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat to medium and simmer, stirring occasionally, until the sauce is thick enough to coat the back of your spoon and very flavorful. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Meanwhile, bring a large pot of salted water to a boil and cook egg noodles until al dente, about 10 minutes. Drain in a colander and set aside. Butter a 9 by 13-inch casserole or baking dish with the remaining tablespoon of butter and set aside. When the sauce has thickened, add the noodles, turkey, parsley, salt, black pepper, and Parmesan to the skillet and stir until thoroughly combined. Transfer to the prepared casserole dish and top with crushed potato chips. Bake uncovered until bubbly and golden brown, about 30 minutes. Serve immediately.

ENTREPRENEUR JAMI MARSHALL BRINGS CREATIVITY & PROFESSIONALISM WRITTEN BY SOPHIE OSWALD

Jami Marshall is an extremely driven entrepreneur with over 19 years of experience opening her own businesses. “I started my first business in 2001 at 21 years old, and it is still going strong. It is called Electric Entertainment DJ Services,” says Marshall. Under this business Marshall currently hosts weddings, school dances, and music bingo at various locations around Johnson County. Marshall didn’t create her photography business until 2016. “People were contacting me asking if I was a photographer after seeing photos I had taken with my phone for fun,” Marshall explains. After a local band asked her to take their promotional photos, she decided to buy a camera and start Electric Imagez Photography. “I’ve always had a love for photography, even as a little girl. I was so intrigued by how the camera can help you freeze time and hold onto special moments you can’t get back,” says Marshall. With Marshall’s love for DJing and photography, it made perfect sense for her to open up her own venue where she can help create those special moments for other people. She is in the process of opening a full-service event space that will bring all of her businesses together under one roof, providing a wide variety of social functions and private parties in southern Johnson County. This event space, The Locale, is tentatively scheduled to open this month, with a ribbon cutting ceremony and open house. They are currently accepting reservations. “The tall antique ceilings and rustic hardwood floors are enclosed by the brick walls of a charming early 1900s building, with a touch of décor selected for your specific event, providing the perfect

desired ambiance for every occasion,” describes Marshall. “The Locale will give clients the luxury of having peace of mind as well as contributing to the local community’s unique identity and helping create a vibrant, lively city.”

We keep our promise that we only use the best quality equipment and printing essentials, giving the client the wow factor they deserve. “My favorite part about being an entrepreneur is creating my own opportunities and destiny for myself as well as for others” says Marshall. “As a photographer and DJ, it brings joy to me to make people feel happy and beautiful.” Now she will be able to provide these talents to people within the walls of her own building. When the space isn’t being used for events, she will use the beautiful building as a backdrop for her photography. Those who book with her for photos are endlessly pleased with her work. Angel Cook, an accounting manager, says, “Jami is one of the most down to earth, genuine photographers I’ve ever met. She makes you and everyone around you feel comfortable and at ease. She is not only an amazing photographer and DJ, but an amazing

human with great talent, morals, and professionalism.” Cheyenne Whittick, a mother, only has positive things to say about Marshall as well. “I loved taking photos with Jami. She made our experience fun, easy, and fast, especially having a little kid. I’m not usually comfortable taking pictures, but she guided us and told us exactly what to do.” “She’s talented, easy to work with, and patient with children and large groups,” adds Katherine Demaree, LPN, who used Electric Imagez for her daughter’s first birthday, her pregnancy, and her newborn photos. “She catches all the great moments so quickly. Her work is incredible and she has a super-fast turnaround time. We don’t plan to ever go to anyone else.” “We keep our promise that we only use the best quality equipment and printing essentials, giving the client the wow factor they deserve,” says Marshall. This extends to the products and vendors used during events held at The Locale. The same clients who have enjoyed using Marshall for photography and DJ work throughout the years won’t be surprised by the amazing experience she will provide through her own venue. The amenities Marshall provides with rental at The Locale go beyond the venue itself. She can also provide her services as a photographer and DJ as well as flowers, cakes, catering from food trucks and other local places, videography, and even drone footage. Her clients range from businesses to individuals. She enjoys bringing joy and peace of mind to anyone using her services.
