AROUND TOWN

IT’S NEVER TOO LATE

FOR HAPPILY EVER AFTER WRITTEN BY JULIE BURTON / PHOTOS PROVIDED BY ALWAYS AND FUREVER

The first thing you’ll notice when you turn into the driveway at Always and Furever Midwest Animal Sanctuary is the big red barn. It’s home to senior dogs and cats, but there are no kennels or cages.

I

nside the barn, you’ll see couches, beds, TVs, a kitchen, and more couches. The animals are free to sleep on couches at night in a non-stressful environment. And there’s classical music playing all the time. It’s the home of second chances where you’re greeted with sloppy kisses and wet noses. Jennifer Dulski is founder and president of Always and Furever Midwest Animal Sanctuary on Ever After Farm in Spring Hill, Kansas. She’s dedicated her life to giving senior dogs and cats their own happily ever since 2018. She’s a lawyer by day and lives her childhood dream by night.

NOVEMBER 2020

She moved from a firm in Boston to a firm in Overland Park with the intent of purchasing a farm-turnedsenior animal rescue. In 2020, Dulski and her team have rescued 1,250 dogs and 100 cats. 654 of those dogs have been placed with their forever homes. This senior-focused rescue helps death row, helpless, and abandoned dogs and cats that otherwise have been forgotten or overlooked. The focus is on seniors, but they do what they can to help puppies as well. Always and Furever believes you’re never too old or sick to be given a second chance at a good life. Shelby Coxon is the fundraising coordinator at Always and Furever. She

says, “Seniors are so special. And you wouldn’t know that some are seniors. They have a pep in their step.” Adopting a senior dog comes with challenges, and Always and Furever is transparent about those challenges. All kinds of people—from young couples to seniors—adopt the dogs and cats. Coxon says, “Some people get nervous about adopting a senior dog because they know the dog or cat won’t be around for a long time. We acknowledge that, but seniors can surprise you. They just want a second chance.” That’s not to say senior dogs and cats won’t come with a financial commitment, which is why Always and Furever never charges an adop-

tion fee (although donations are greatly appreciated). “Seniors are the easiest dogs and cats. They just want a soft place to land. We don’t sugar coat things. If there’s an incontinence issue, you’ll know about it. We know which dogs and cats would fit into which families,” Coxon explains. Some families know they cannot take full responsibility to adopt a dog, so being a foster family is a great option. And Always and Furever is in great need of foster families. They cover the cost of everything you need to foster, from leashes and collars to veterinarian fees. Another fun option is “doggy dates.” When you sign up for a doggy date, a staff member will bring a dog to your car (keeping a good social distance) for you to take the dog on a car ride. You’re free to take the dog to a park, to Sonic for a pup cup, or to just cruise around with the windows down. The dogs get plenty of time outdoors and leisure time inside the barn, but sometimes an extra car ride is just the treat you both need. “Give a senior a chance,” Coxon says. “In those last years of life, spoil them rotten. Some of those dogs have had a rough life. If we can make sure those last few years or months are filled with love, that’s all that matters.” When you turn down the driveway at Always and Furever, you’ll see the big red barn. And if you pay attention, you’ll pass a garden frequented by birds and butterflies. There’s a place to sit in the garden. There’s a wind chime, too. It can be therapeutic if you take a seat and listen. You’ll be surrounded by second chances. More information can be found at Alwaysandfurever.love or check out their Facebook page for videos at Facebook.com/nevertoolateforhappilyeverafter. Every medical spa has a medical director—a physician overseeing the practice. But there’s a medical spa that takes its staff to another level in Kansas City. Revive and Rally Health Lounge is owned and operated by medical clinicians who are involved with every aspect of the practice. The depth of their individual training shows their commitment to their clients. Every client receives care from clinicians who are still practicing medicine within the four walls of a hospital. Dr. Rahul Kapur is medical director and owner of Revive and Rally Health Lounge, along with John Heymach, RN, and Andrew Coleman. Kapur is also a partner with a hospitalist group at North Kansas City and Liberty Hospital. “Working in the hospital I see the end result of years of poor health,” Kapur says. “Our clinic provides treatments in a more welcoming place and addresses hormonal imbalances and lifestyle interventions to improve quality of life. BUSINESS INSIDER

“NO DUTY IS MORE URGENT THAN THAT OF RETURNING THANKS.” — JAMES ALLEN WRITTEN BY JENNY KINCAID JULIAN / PHOTO BY JAMI MARSHALL

November is one of my favorite months. First off, it’s sweata weatha. Thank you, Betty Caruso (Amy Poehler) and Jodi Deitz (Maya Rudolph), for coining the catchy phrase on Saturday Night Live’s “Bronx Beat.” Sweata weatha means more movie nights with the little ones, more football, and saying thanks more often to people in my personal and professional life. Do you look for opportunities to thank your clients? Thanksgiving is the ideal time to remember and express your gratitude towards colleagues, clients, customers, and anyone who has supported you. Satisfied customers become brand ambassadors who inherently become a member of your sales team. Increasing brand loyalty doesn’t have to be complicated or cost a lot of money. The more appreciation you show, the more loyal that person will become. Every employee, from waiters to car wash attendants, could benefit from having an appreciation mindset. Without hungry people or dirty cars, the employee would not be employed. Thank you, client. Thank you.

cipient. A little effort goes a long way, even in 2020.

Celebrate Customer Successes Take time to recognize your customer’s successes, both personal and professional. Share their wins on social media, mention it in your company newsletter, or send them a treat and a card of congratulations. Acknowledgment for a job well done is always well received, especially when they’re not expecting it.

Reciprocate Support

There are several ways to reach out and thank customers. Some of my favorites are:

The best relationships are mutual. If a customer is also a business owner, has started a side hustle, or is passionate about a cause, buy the product, make a referral, give a positive review, or do the 5K walk/run. Be an advocate for their good deeds and entrepreneurial spirit.

Handwritten Thank You Note

Pick Up the Phone

This is my absolute favorite. With everyone online and so far apart, be a business standout with a handwritten thank you note. Most people overestimate the time and effort involved in saying thanks and underestimate the positive impact on them and the re-

Yes, people. Make the call. Children’s Mercy Hospital does this very well. Every month my husband receives a call/voicemail from either a doctor or a nurse thanking him for his donation. The voicemails are sincere and always appreciated. Talking on the phone

might sound terrible, but think of what could come out of just one of those conversations.

Surprise, Delight & Special Discounts Everyone likes good surprises. Make someone’s day by surprising them with a small gift card to a local coffee shop or restaurant or even a fresh pastry from the local bakery. If that’s not doable, think of creating a Customer Appreciation Day or Week and allowing your best customers early access or VIP-only access. Pair this with other freebies from vendors or in partnership with another local store. As Thanksgiving grows closer, I find the season’s sentiments allow for more relaxed conversations, making it less stressful to express my feelings of appreciation and gratitude. I hope you’ve found these suggestions helpful. What are you doing this Thanksgiving to show thanks? Please share your thoughts and ideas with me via email at jenny@socialworxpr.com.

TAKE CONTROL OF YOUR HEALTH WITH SCREENINGS WRITTEN BY ADVENTHEALTH SHAWNEE MISSION

When it comes to your health, knowledge is power. The more you know about your health and risk factors for diseases, the more you can work to prevent and minimize health challenges. And scheduling recommended screenings is one of the most effective ways to keep your health in check. The best way to ensure you are keeping up with your health screenings is to schedule an annual physical with your primary care provider,” says Brooke Varnum, MD, AdventHealth Medical Group Primary Care at Lenexa. “I recommend patients who are 30 and older have a yearly physical and those under 30 who have no

health conditions schedule a visit every 1-2 years.” Some people may be reluctant to visit their physician right now due to the coronavirus pandemic. However, physicians want you to know that it’s safe and important to continue to see your doctor on a regular basis.

“We strongly encourage patients not to put off their health concerns, as we are taking every precaution to keep them safe in our office,” says Dr. Varnum. “It’s as important as ever that we continue to manage your chronic conditions to keep you as healthy as possible.”

When women are preoccupied with the responsibilities of daily life, it’s easy to put off screenings, especially if they are asymptomatic. However, remember that screenings are not only useful when you have symptoms, but they can also provide information to help prevent future problems. “I explain to patients that a lot of our recommendations for screenings are to find issues that arise before you have symptoms,” says Dr. Varnum. “This allows us to find problems early, and to better protect you in the future. For example, with our cancer screenings, our goal is to catch a problem very early, which makes it more treatable.” Here are some of the most important health screenings for women at every age.

Teens through 20s BLOOD PRESSURE TEST • Start: 18 • Frequency: Every year • Why: Blood pressure is a major risk factor of heart disease, the leading cause of death among American women. PAP SMEAR AND PELVIC EXAM • Start: 21 • Frequency: Every three years (or every five years with an HPV test if 30+) • Why: These checks for abnormalities in the reproductive system, including cervical cancer and abnormal cells that could develop into cancer. CLINICAL BREAST EXAM •S tart: 20 • Frequency: Every three years until age 40, then every year

•W hy: A health care professional can catch things you may miss during your monthly self-check. SKIN EXAM • Start: 20 •F requency: Varies based on risk factors, but you should check yourself monthly •W hy: This is important for people with an increased risk of skin cancer. STD (GONORRHEA AND CHLAMYDIA) SCREENING •S tart: Before age 25 if sexually active or age 25 and older if at increased risk •F requency: Varies depending on personal situation •W hy: Some STDs can cause other health problems if left untreated. Testing also lowers the chance of passing the STD to someone else.

BE WELL CONT. 40s MAMMOGRAM • Start: 40 • Frequency: Every year • Why: Mammograms can detect cancer early and will show changes in the breast up to two years before you or your physician would be able to feel them. BLOOD GLUCOSE TESTS • Start: 40 • Frequency: Every three years •W hy: Type 2 diabetes is linked to heart disease, depression, and eating disorders—all more common among women than men. LIPID PANEL

•F requency: Every year

• Frequency: Every 5-10 years

• Why: A lipid panel is another form of cardiac risk assessment that involves evaluating cholesterol levels.

Why: Cancers of the colon can actually be prevented by screening, since colon cancer develops first as polyps that can be removed if caught early enough.

HEPATITIS C TEST • Start: Anyone born between 1945 and 1965 and anyone who had a C-section before 1992 •F requency: Once • Why: This group of adults may have been exposed to contaminated blood that wasn’t thoroughly tested. Hepatitis C could wear down the immune system and lead to liver cancer if untreated. COLONOSCOPY/FLEXIBLE SIGMOIDOSCOPY

50+ BONE DENSITY SCREEN • Start: 65 •F requency: Varies based on bone density and risk factors •W hy: A bone density scan screens for osteoporosis and also alerts your physician if you’re at increased risk of injury or declining mobility.

•S tart: 45-50 (based on provider recommendation)

• Start: 45

This is intended to be a general overview of important health screenings for women and is not comprehensive. Individual risk factors are also used to determine the need for screenings as well as their frequency. AT HOME

MAKE YOUR HOME A PLAYGROUND (INSTEAD OF A PRISON) IN 2020 WRITTEN BY SHANNON E. ROESGEN

With the weather turning colder, we are forced to seek shelter. This year, that means mostly staying at home, making it very easy to feel overwhelmed, claustrophobic, or frustrated. Before the pandemic, spending more time with family was an item on many New Year’s resolution lists. Today, it is not uncommon to hear parents say things like “I’ve had a little too much family time lately” or “There are too many people here, and I need some space!” Even your dog may be thinking, Would you people leave me alone? I’m trying to take a nap!

growth is seen and the holistic purification of the air. Plus, plants make people happy, and we all need some of that right now.”

Plants are so old, they’re new!

Some popular plants include Sansevieria (snake plants) and Zamioculcas zamiifolia (ZZ plants). “People are always on the hunt for good low-light-tolerant plants. These plants are low maintenance and low-light-tolerant, making them ideal for beginners and shady corners,” says Hamilton. They range from $12-$36.

Plants are making a comeback during this pandemic. People are hungry to bring life and positivity to their homes. Reba Hamilton, owner of Virgil’s Plant Shop, says, “For people stuck inside, plants provide natural growth and the colors of the outdoors, as well as something to care for—a sense of accomplishment when new

HEOS speakers HEOS is a wireless music system that

allows you to control and have access to all of your music from any room in your home. You will need a HEOS-enabled AV receiver or speakers and the free HEOS app. HEOS works with Amazon Alexa and provides the freedom to personalize a different playlist in every room in your home. A local mother of four who uses this product says, “We have them in multiple rooms. With the HEOS app, we can tune into any music service we have. We wake the kids up at 6:30 a.m. every morning by playing music in their rooms.”

Echo Glow: Multicolor smart lamp for kids “I love, love, love this for my kids!” says Kelsey Trauer of Gardner, Kansas. “I program it to turn various colors to teach my kids when it is bedtime. I can program it from the Alexa app to turn purple at 8 p.m. to signal that it’s bedtime. It stays purple all night and turns orange at 6 a.m. to signal it’s almost time to wake up. At 6:15 a.m. it turns

green, meaning it’s okay to get out of bed.” It can also be used as a disco light and has other fun light variations.

LED lights for your teens Teenagers have a strong desire for privacy, and therefore spend a lot of time in their bedrooms with the door closed. Why not make their rooms a little brighter with some LED lights? LED lighting produces light up to 90 percent more efficiently than incandescent light bulbs. It uses less electricity than regular bulbs and does not heat up as much. Many come with dimmers, which enables your teen to adjust the brightness as needed.

Air fryer for your kitchen An air fryer is really a hot air chamber convection oven that suspends food and cooks it faster than a traditional oven by distributing heat more evenly. It will cook chicken breasts, burgers, or steaks to the desired temperature. Breading is never necessary, and meats

come out cooked to perfection. Air fryers are also great for cooking vegetables. Most vegetables are finished cooking in about 10 minutes. Spray a little olive oil or avocado oil on green beans, broccoli, mushrooms, asparagus, or baked potatoes and enjoy a healthy and easy air fryer-made dinner.

Upcycle old Mason jars for holiday decorations Need a creative project for your kiddos? Turn Mason jars into sparkly holiday decorations with a safe and unsuspecting item from your medicine cabinet: epsom salt. Epsom salt transforms any Mason jar into a snowy, sparkly decoration that is safe and inexpensive for your kids to create. It is a fun activity that will keep your children busy—at least for a few minutes—so you can have a well-deserved moment to yourself.

BRINGING LUXURY INTO PERSPECTIVE AT KC’S OWN ROMANELLI OPTIX WRITTEN BY REBECCA FISCHER / PHOTOS BY JAMI MARSHALL

Cousins Roman Beznovsky and Felix Milman believed from a young age that the American Dream was attainable for them—even as the sons of Russian immigrant families growing up in Section 8 housing off Troost Avenue. “We knew life didn’t have to be like that, with all the opportunity in America—if we could just figure out how to engage,” Beznovsky says. Beznovsky thought that, for him, the dream would be realized through studying optometry. Ever since he had been prescribed glasses to correct his vision as a child, he was fascinated with why he didn’t see correctly. He wanted to learn everything he could about the eyes, and then share that knowledge with others.

26

NOVEMBER 2020

While attending the University of Kansas, Beznovsky worked for several optical shops. But shortly after graduating, it dawned on him that he enjoyed the style aspects of optics much more than the medical aspects. He went on to become the manager of one of the only ultra-luxury optical shops in the world—here in Kansas City.

Meanwhile, his cousin Milman was pursuing his interests in fashion, clothing, and accessories. He was working at another optical shop when Beznovsky’s shop announced it would be closing. “That was almost 20 years ago,” says Beznovsky. “Really, both of us have been following this dream since right out of high school.”

New Beginnings–and Rapid Growth In 2004, shortly after the optical shop where Beznovsky had been working closed, the cousins opened Romanelli Optix in the Waldo/Brookside community, offering exclusive collections of European luxury eyewear. “As business partners, one of our main goals has always been to change the whole experience for our customers,” Beznovsky says. “It’s not just a purchase of glasses. It’s a feeling, a lifestyle, that they’ll appreciate and truly enjoy. It’s glasses that they’ll want to wear, not because they have to.” Recognizable for its eye-catching striped logo and similar decor, the shop soon became popular with customers from all over Kansas City for its wide selection of more than 80 distinct collections—with approximately 100 pieces in each collection—as well as for its custom-cut assembly provided right inside the shop.

“It’s not just a purchase of glasses. It’s a feeling, a lifestyle, that they’ll appreciate and truly enjoy. It’s glasses that they’ll want to wear, not because they have to.” Just two years later, the duo opened a second location in Leawood, and then in 2012 a third location in Overland Park. “Eyewear is unique in that it’s the only accessory, the only fashion piece, on the planet that is also a prosthetic device,” says Beznovsky. “With them you

can see, but you can also look good!”

Luxury, Craftsmanship, Excellence Some of the most popular brands with customers are the ultra high-end luxury lines the shops carry, including Chrome Hearts (made in the U.S.) and Paris brands such as J.F. Rey. A quick visit to Romanelli’s website reveals a list of brands you may recognize: Gucci, Cartier, Fendi, Chanel, Prada, and Tag Heuer, to name just a few. Bearing the colored stripes that have come to be associated with the Romanelli brand, the Romanelli Optix eyewear brand is also a customer favorite. “I get the biggest high from

hearing people say that the glasses they bought here make them feel so good, or that they see the best they’ve ever seen,” Beznovsky says. “That never gets old for me.” Customers are as quick to rave about the service and craftsmanship at Romanelli as they are the products. “They have the very best eyeglasses and frames in Kansas City,” says Jami Lloyd Kay of Prairie Village. “And everything there, including the expertise, is top-notch.” Pam Burton of Stillwell says, “I had a great time working with Mackenzie as she helped me find the perfect glasses and sunglasses for my face shape, personal style, and price point!”

BEAUTY

COMBING THROUGH THE FACTS HAIR LOSS IN WOMEN

WRITTEN BY MADISON OBERMEYER

S

hock. Dread. Horror. Fascination. Panic. Curiosity. And then? Action. These are likely the steps you’ll recount to your dermatologist when they ask about when you first started noticing your hair loss. Dramatic? Always. Alone? Never. According to the American Hair Loss Association, more than 40 percent of women will experience visible hair loss by the time they are 50. Suddenly all those clumps of hair on the bathroom floor are starting to add up. We spoke with board-certified dermatologist Dr. John Rupp, MD, and certified dermatology physician assistant Krishna Schmidt, PA-C, at Dermatology Specialists of Kansas City to comb through the details. You can blame the hairstylists. You can blame the ‘80s. Heck, you can blame the global pandemic we’ve been wrapped up in this year. But when it comes to facing the facts—or, in reality, the hair-clogged faucet—the reason may be looking right back at you.

WHY YOU’RE EXPERIENCING HAIR LOSS “Like men, women often experience

28

|

NOVEMBER 2020

hair loss with aging,” Dr. Rupp explains. “This type of hair loss is called androgenetic, or female-pattern, hair loss. This is by far the most common type of hair loss and affects more than 30 million women in the U.S.” Rupp says androgenetic hair loss is generally noticed as a gradual thinning at the part line, followed by increasing diffuse hair loss. Hair loss is written in your DNA, but that doesn’t mean there’s nothing you can do about it. Androgenetic hair loss can be caused by a variety of hormone-related factors including ovarian cysts, high androgen index birth control pills, pregnancy, and menopause, according to the AHLA. “Another type of hair loss is telogen effluvium, which may be experienced by both men and women,” Schmidt weighs in. “This is caused by a major life event such as the birth of a baby, a major illness, a surgical procedure, or any other significant life stressor. Medications can also cause this type of hair loss.” Schmidt explains that this hair loss generally begins within a few months

of the event or medication onset, and usually self-corrects within 3-6 months (or with discontinuation of the offending medication). If hereditary loss isn’t adding up, there could be other factors to blame, like scarring. However, Dr. Rupp says this is less common. “[Scarring hair loss] is usually due to a medical condition that destroys the hair follicle and replaces it with scar tissue,” he explains. “Certain hair styles, particularly tight styles or tight braids that cause traction, can cause scarring.”

cia areata could be at fault. “[Alopecia areata] is an autoimmune condition,” Schmidt says. “It can occasionally progress to complete scalp hair loss—less commonly, it can affect more than just the scalp and can cause loss of all body hair and occur sporadically throughout a person’s life.” In addition to alopecia areata, certain medical conditions can cause hair loss, with the most common including iron deficiency, thyroid disease, and lupus, Dr. Rupp adds.

treatments include over-the-counter topical minoxidil (Rogaine) and prescription anti-androgens, as well as other treatments when appropriate. For alopecia and scarring, treatments include steroids and minoxidil, but other treatment options may be appropriate. In addition to the treatments above, there is a new, non-FDA-approved procedure that Dermatology Specialists of Kansas City and many other dermatology practices are offering called platelet-rich plasma, Schmidt says.

Because of this, Dr. Rupp says his team generally recommends that any tight hairstyles be avoided. “Once this type of hair loss begins, it can be difficult to treat, but the earlier the diagnosis is made, the more effective the treatments will be,” Dr. Rupp explains.

THE BEST TREATMENT OPTION FOR YOU Don’t worry—we won’t leave you scratching your head. Now that we’ve covered what may be causing your hair loss, it’s time to survey treatment options.

“PRP involves injecting the patient’s own blood serum into the affected areas of the scalp,” Schmidt explains. “This is thought to work because the blood serum contains growth factors that help to jumpstart the development of new hair follicles and subsequent new growth.”

Sometimes, the culprit is the most simple yet complex answer there is: science. If you’re experiencing circular bald patches as opposed to thinning around the part or throughout the scalp, alope-

For hair loss that subsides on its own within a certain period of time like telogen effluvium, no treatment is necessary, but topical minoxidil may be helpful to promote growth. For androgenetic loss,

Say goodbye to hormone-induced, hereditary, hairstyle-sacrificed, habitual plucking hair loss. It’s time to put your best scalp forward!

WHERE FLOWERS BLOOM, SO DOES HOPE

—LADY BIRD JOHNSON WRITTEN BY SHANNON E. ROESGEN PHOTOS BY JAMI MARSHALL

e could all use a little help to brighten our days this year. What better way to do that than by sending a vibrant and colorful flower arrangement to a loved one? And Flowers by Emily is a great option for doing just that. Flowers by Emily was opened in 2007 by Emily Fyten, and is now located in Park Place. “We are a family-owned business,” explains Fyten. “We have an experienced staff that has been with the business for several years.” Their flowers come from several different sources. “Some come from local growers that have farms nearby, and some are shipped directly—all the way from Holland, for example,” says Fyten. “We love using seasonal and unique flowers. There are classic flowers we get in year-round, but most of the time our arrangements change depending on the season. We offer seasonal mixed bouquets and arrangements, and we will make each one fresh and beautiful!”

When you walk into the store, you will experience a welcoming and inviting space. They believe in having their work area out in the open—there is no back room. They also have a website that is easy to navigate. “Our website allows you to pick your price point and color palette for arrangements rather than having to choose a specif-

ic arrangement,” explains Fyten. “This allows us to bring in the prettiest flowers available from all of our suppliers to use for the week, rather than trying to stick with a specific menu of options.” They even offer ongoing flower subscriptions (monthly, weekly, and bi-weekly). “Delivery for subscrip-

tions is free after your first order and you can pause or stop it whenever you would like,” says Fyten. In case flowers aren’t really your thing, Flowers by Emily also keeps a supply of succulents and cacti available for purchase at all times.

“The flowers are, in a word, breathtaking.” One customer called from out of state with a special request and an inspirational picture. “I needed it the same day,” they explained, “and Flowers by Emily delivered! Emily was friendly, helpful, quick, and the arrangement was beautiful: exactly what I wanted. She even sent a picture of the finished work and notification that the flowers were on their way to my friend’s home.”

OWNING A SMALL BUSINESS DURING A PANDEMIC As many small businesses were forced to do this year, Flowers by Emily had to adjust their business model in order to endure the pandemic. “When the stay-at-home order was issued, Kansas approved Flowers by Emily as an essential business,” says Fyten. They began no-contact deliveries at the time, which are still an option.

“Today, for pick-up orders, we recommend placing your order ahead of time. You may stop in to pick it up or call us when you arrive and we will bring it out to you. We are also still making deliveries. If you have any specific instructions, please note them in the special delivery instructions,” explains Fyten. Fyten hopes to use her business as a vessel for spreading joy to the residents of Kansas City. Flower arrangements are a lovely option

to help our loved ones find hope during this pandemic. “I realize you don’t need flowers to survive, but it has been very rewarding helping people send their loved ones (or even themselves) something to help brighten their day,” says Fyten. “Flowers by Emily has held a place in my heart since 2006 when I received the most beautiful arrangement from them,” says a customer. “Shortly thereafter, I attended a wedding. The flowers were done by Emily and were, in a word, breathtaking. Since that moment, they are the only florist I use in Kansas City. Their work is consistently topnotch, imaginative, and unparalleled in the city!”

PARENTING

RECONNECT

WITH YOUR FAMILY AND THE COMMUNITY THROUGH VOLUNTEERING WRITTEN BY BRENNAN HALLOCK

Humane Society of Greater Kansas City | hsgkc.org

W

e are constantly interacting with the world around us, yet we often feel sadly disconnected from it. Even our own community can seem like something that moves on without us. Lately this feeling of disconnect has become more pronounced in many of our lives as we have done more work from our homes, only visited the store for essential items, and cut down on our social interaction within the city. But volunteering as a family is a perfect way to dispel the feelings of isolation that 2020 has created, and at the same time reach out to the community around us in positive ways.

32

|

SIMPLYkc MAGAZINE

There are hundreds of different ways you and your family can give back to the Kansas City community, but here are a few ideas to get you started.

|

NOVEMBER 2020

Volunteering with animals is often a popular way to get your children involved. The Humane Society of Greater Kansas City is the oldest shelter in the area and the first no-kill shelter in Greater Kansas City. They work with Animal Control, maintain an affordable care clinic for the public, and do a lot of outreach in the community. “Every minute you spend with us helps save lives,” says Kate Fields, volunteer coordinator. Fields says they are in need of many different types of volunteers, including some forms of volunteering that cater directly to children. “We are in desperate need of foster people for dogs and cats. There are so many

opportunities—kittens that need to be bottle fed, a little older kittens that are in litters of four or five, dogs that may need hospice or medical care, dogs that just need a place to be, and even puppies.” Fields says cats work well with kids. “Parents can bring their children in and sit and read to the cats. That gives them quality time with the kitties. And then as the kids get older—16 or 17 years old—they would be able to work with the dogs here in the building.” Some of the volunteering in their locations has been suspended due to COVID-19, but will be opening up soon (in the first or second quarter of 2021). You can go to their website and apply on the volunteer page. They typically have volunteer orientations twice a month. “When we’re back open we’ll even have clinic volunteer opportunities available,” adds Fields.

NourishKC | nourishkc.org If a direct impact on the people around you is what you are looking for, NourishKC may be a good fit for you and your family. NourishKC distributes food to local people in need, and the need for food distribution has continued to rise in 2020. “We serve fresh, hot meals to the general public from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday-Friday,” explains Christina Esteban, director of operations. “We have volunteer opportunities for about 1012 people per day, and we have small groups (4-5 people at a time) that we can take.” Some of the volunteer opportunities include food prep, food processing, cleaning, and food distribution. “We box up our meals and then give to-go meals to several hundred people every day,” says Esteban.

“Families are welcome,” adds Esteban. “You can bring your children or your family group with you to volunteer.” Because of everyone’s safety and concern, they don’t have more than six volunteers in the kitchen at a time, and the volunteering is based upon a signup system. There are many times available, though. They have Monday-Friday 8-11:30 a.m., 11:30 a.m.-3 p.m., and the second Saturday of each month for three hours. “Having that direct impact—knowing that the strawberries you’re cutting and the meal you’re distributing is really making an impact on someone at that moment—is rewarding, fun, and we have a daily opportunity to make that difference,” says Esteban.

816 Bicycle Collective | 816bike.org

zation is a unique opportunity to give back to the community. Bicycle shops can be an intimidating location for someone who can’t afford the bicycles or parts being sold in the shop. But the reality is many low-income individuals rely on bikes as transportation. The 816 Bicycle Collective bridges that gap by offering all people access to affordable bicycles, education, parts, and tools in a non-intimidating setting. This is done through workshops, repairs, trade-ins, payment plans, and more for low-income individuals using bicycles for transportation. If you and/ or your children are interested in giving back through your knowledge about bicycles—or would like to learn more about bicycles—this may be a great fit for your family.

Take it from local flippers Tim Cahalan and Mark Fisher. “We’re definitely not as exciting as the guys on the shows,” says Cahalan. “And it’s a lot more work than we expected. But it’s fun to have success with it.” The two full-time electrical engineers and college buddies had the idea to start flipping houses when they were discussing the costs of putting their

kids through college. They felt they could do some serious remodeling and bring real value to properties, rather than just paint the walls and clean up the yard, as some “flippers” do.

Gaines. “We’ve picked up a lot of cool things to try from the shows, especially when it comes to open concepts,” Cahalan says. “But it’s harder than it looks, especially at first.”

They paired with a local real estate agent and purchased their first two properties: in Fairway and Prairie Village. Both properties were a success, and FC (Fisher-Cahalan) Holdings, Inc., was officially born. Five years into their business, Cahalan says they average two or three flips a year.

Most people who begin flipping houses feel similarly. A recent New York Times article by Ronda Kaysen suggests potential flippers should take such shows with a grain of salt. “Where a show might describe a six-week renovation schedule from start to finish, the real world moves at a slower pace,” writes Kaysen. You could spend a month with the architect before ever starting any work. All the while, you are paying property taxes, insurance, and interest on a mortgage or construction loan.

Cahalan and Fisher don’t limit themselves to one style, but do tend to focus on the “modern farmhouse” look, featuring big, open spaces, the use of salvaged architectural pieces like sliding barn doors, farmhouse sinks, and vintage-inspired plumbing. Fisher and Cahalan say they were inspired by previous costars of HGTV’s “Fixer Upper” Joanna and Chip

Although the learning curve at the start was steep, Cahalan says after five years, he and Fisher have discovered a few “secrets to success” they

want to share with anyone looking to get into the business. 1.

now the property (or hire someone who does). When K Cahalan and Fisher first started, they worked through an established local real estate agent who knew which properties had the potential to be flipped successfully. Over time, they learned to recognize diamonds in the rough themselves, but it took a lot of hands-on work.

2.

Have a student mindset. From permits and contracts to the actual physical labor, there’s a lot more to learn than you think. Start smaller than you probably want to, be patient, and take good notes.

3.

Consider getting your real estate and contractor’s licenses. Once you know what to look for and what makes a good potential flip, you can skip the middleman and be pickier about your properties while earning even more.

After devoting so much time and energy to the creative project of renovating a house, does Cahalan warn against becoming attached to a property? “You know, it’s really a love-hate kind of thing,” he says with a laugh. “At the end, there’s just this huge push to get it finished, and by the time it’s done, I’m ready to let someone else have it. But there’s a lot of satisfaction in the work—in buying a junky old house and turning it into something cool.”

KACIE WHAT SHOULD I POST ABOUT MY SOCIAL MEDIA ANXIETY?

I hate to admit this, but social media is making me anxious. I worry what people think of my posts. I fear people don’t like me and don’t want to be around me. It keeps me up at night. I’ve taken a few days off from social media, but I always come back. Do you have any advice?

Congratulations on picking up SIMPLYkc Magazine and reading. That’s step one—find a hobby. Read a book, write in a journal, take up golf, or begin sewing. Find something—anything—to take your mind off your computer and smartphone. Step two: seek professional help. Sometimes just talking to someone can put your mind at ease. And honestly, you need advice from a professional, not a magazine advice columnist. The truth is almost all of us are addicted in some way to social media. It’s the connected world we live in. It’s not feasible to remove all smart devices. The easiest way to detox is by starting slow. Many phones and apps can tell you how much time you spend on social media. Start by limiting your social media to 1-2 hours per day. When you reach your limit, put the device away. If that’s too hard, get even more strict and decide to only use your phone for making phone calls or texting. And if that’s still too hard, make that phone call to a professional.

If you have any questions you’d like Kacie to answer, submit them to contact@simplykcmag.com.

MIND & BODY

EMPTY FIVENEST SIMPLE,

AN END COMMON SENSE WITH A NEW BEGINNING TIPS TO HAVE A HEALTHY HOLIDAY SEASON WRITTEN BY COURTNEY WEIS

It’s the holiday season! Time for holiday parties, office luncheons, drinks, baking with the kids and … Oh no! My skinny jeans don’t fit anymore. Don’t fall into the dreaded cycle of holiday weight gain. On average, people gain 5-10 pounds during the sixweek holiday season. I see it all the time in my line of work. Class attendance is down and clients miss more sessions because of holiday conflicts. We all get busy this time of year and that makes it even easier to lose the motivation to eat right and exercise. Don’t fear, not all is lost just because it’s the holidays! Follow these words of wisdom and keep off the “Holiday 5-10!”

NOVEMBER 2020

1. Exercise! I cannot stress enough the importance of exercise during the holidays. Not only does it burn calories (burn off the three slices of pumpkin pie you ate), it also wards off stress. Do you know anyone who thinks the holidays are stress-free? And don’t even utter the words “I’ll get back to exercising after the New Year.” Once you get out of your routine, it is much harder to get back into it. Even a short and sweet workout is better than no workout at all! So, you can’t make it to the gym. There are plenty of other things you can do: • Grab an exercise video and do it in

the morning before work. (I personally love INSANITY!) •C heck out Pinterest, Facebook, or YouTube. I’m always finding great workout ideas on these sites. They are fabulous for at-home workouts. •G o for a walk, especially after a big meal! Make it a family affair; race the kids to burn some extra calories. • I f you’re at work all day, take the stairs, walk around the parking lot or building for 10-20 minutes after lunch, or pack your gym bag and sit it on your office chair. You’ll feel guilty carrying a gym bag out the door unless you are wearing your workout clothes and are on your way to a class.

2. Sleep! Get your 6-8 hours in to keep your body running at full speed. Lack of sleep contributes to so many health issues, including weight gain, increased stress

levels, and hormonal imbalances. Get a little shut-eye and you’ll do your body (and your mind) a huge favor.

3. Eat before you party! We all have holiday parties, but that doesn’t mean they have to be diet-busters. Have a small meal before you head out the door. A turkey sandwich, some yogurt, or even an apple will help fill you up before the festivities. And do yourself a favor—don’t stand next to the buffet to mingle. Set up shop across the room to avoid mindless munching.

4. Limit your alcohol! I always tell my clients to never drink their calories. There is absolutely no nutritional value in alcohol. If you must have a cocktail, limit your intake and have a glass of water in between drinks.

It will help you feel full and keep you hydrated. Too much alcohol can also be a diet disaster. When your inhibitions are down, you tend to eat more.

5. Last but not least, don’t abandon all efforts because of one bad day! Stick with it—you can eat well and exercise over the holiday season! We all have bad days where we eat and drink everything in sight because we’re busy or overwhelmed. Just forget about it and jump right back on the wagon. Follow these five little tips and you’ll look and feel fabulous for New Year’s Eve. Have a happy and healthy holiday season!

BECAUSE I SAID SO...

39 THINGS I LEARNED IN 39 YEARS WRITTEN BY JULIE BURTON / PHOTOS BY SAMANTHA LEVI

It’s my birthday month. 39 years old. I swear I’m not the older and wiser 40-year-old, but I did learn a few things: 39 things I learned in 39 years.

1. Avoid the sun. If you’re over 30, you’re too late.

Yell at your teenage self, not your anti-aging skin routine.

2. Parents have a favorite child. It’s the one that’s easier to parent in any given moment.

3. Don’t “celebrate” Valentine’s Day.

You risk conceiving a child with a Thanksgiving birthday.

4. Blackjack is a good math game to teach kids. 5. Tip well. 6. The book is better than the movie. Jenny Gump didn’t die in the book.

7. Birth order personalities are not always right. 8. Astrological signs are not always right either. 9. You don’t have to enjoy cooking just because you’re female.

10. Order the dessert. 11. Calling your former elementary school

teacher by her first name on Facebook will never be normal. Hi, Mrs. Bainbridge.

12. You don’t need to know why someone got divorced.

13. Find the humor in every situation. It’s there. 14. Meet someone from across the world. That’s the beauty of our era.

15. Leftovers aren’t good. Seconds are better than leftovers.

16. People will think what they want to think. Let them.

17. Don’t be so hard on your body when you’re young. Your body remembers and will fail you when you’re 39. Exactly 39.

18. Have children when you’re in your 20s.

Babies and toddlers will suck your soul. Get it over with while you’re fertile.

19. Have children when you’re in your 30s.

Babies and toddlers will suck your soul. Enjoy your youth before you take over someone else’s.

20. No one is who they seem online. 21. If someone is going through a hard time,

check on them. Don’t assume they’re going to reach out if they need help. They won’t.

22. Don’t say “please stop growing” to babies

and kids. Sometimes they do stop. Let them grow.

23. Tell your mom “Happy Labor Day” on your birthday.

24. People aren’t against you. They are for themselves.

26. When ordering a drink at the bar, always

ask for a glass of water with it. You’ll thank yourself tomorrow.

27. Everyone has a good, gossip-worthy story. 28. Ask an expert, not the internet. 29. Have the guts to say no. 30. Have the guts to say yes. 31. Age doesn’t matter anymore when you become a parent. The 25-year-old mom of a preschooler has a lot in common with the 45-year-old mom of a preschooler.

32. Never expect a thank you when you donate time or money.

33. Go all the way under in the pool, ocean, or lake.

34. When playing roulette, always split the green zero and green double zeros.

35. No one in our lifetime has parented through a pandemic. Be kind.

36. Xennials are the microgeneration between Gen X and Millennials.

37. No matter how much we dislike 2020,

remember that the Kansas City Chiefs won the Super Bowl.

38. Make your kids listen to classic rock. 39. Girls are just as gross as boys.

25. There comes a point in parenthood when

others stop telling you your kids are so cute. They start telling you, “Your kids are so big.”

GOOD TASTES

EXTENDING THE OUTDOOR SEASON EVEN INTO NOVEMBER

WRITTEN BY GINA REARDON / PHOTO BY MELANIE MCDOWELL

SIMPLYkc MAGAZINE

The magic that happens when sharing food and conversation with friends or family around a table is worth whatever effort it takes to execute. And in this time of coronavirus, I imagine I will not be alone in extending the outdoor season as long as possible, entertaining outside until well into November or December—with the right menu, some layered clothing, and maybe a portable outdoor heating source. When it comes to the menu planning, keep it simple. Hearty main dishes (think lasagna or a big bowl of chili) is one option. But why not try an assortment of small plates? Think tapas! Imagine the colors, the textures, and the flavors you love most, and strike a balance of hot, cold, or room temperature dishes. I promise it will be an unforgettable afternoon or evening. Because all we really want, at the end of the day, is to be together.

- Grilled Chicken Skewers with Curry Lime Aioli Grilled Chicken Skewers

Curry Lime Aioli Makes 1-1/2 cups

INGREDIENTS

INGREDIENTS

2 pounds boneless chicken thighs or breasts, rinsed, patted dry, and cut into 1-1/2 or 2-inch pieces

1 tablespoon safflower or vegetable oil 1/2 yellow or white onion, finely chopped

Vegetable oil

2 tablespoons curry powder

Kosher salt and coarsely ground black pepper or steak seasoning

1 cup mayonnaise

8-inch bamboo or metal skewers

1 lime, juiced 2 tablespoons sour cream 2 tablespoons mango chutney

DIRECTIONS Prepare hot coals for grilling. Combine chicken pieces in a medium bowl, drizzle with a few tablespoons of oil to coat lightly. Thread on the ends of bamboo or metal skewers, leaving enough room at the end to handle. Season with salt and pepper. Place the skewers 3 inches from the coals and grill, turning once, for 8-10 minutes, or until internal temperature on meat thermometer registers at 165 degrees. Remove from grill.

DIRECTIONS Heat oil in a small skillet. Add the onion and sauté over low heat until soft, 8-10 minutes. Add curry powder and cook, stirring for 5 minutes. Set aside and allow to cool thoroughly. Combine mayonnaise, lime juice, sour cream, and chutney. Stir in curried onions and season with salt and pepper to taste. Refrigerate until ready to use.

NOTE: This aioli is also a wonderful base for curried chicken salad. Stir into poached or roasted, shredded, or cubed chicken breast meat seasoned with salt and pepper, thinly sliced celery, thinly sliced green onions, dried cranberries, and toasted sliced almonds and toasted sesame seed.

7 THINGS

7

THINGS TO DO AT HOME AS A FAMILY 1 Make being together a tradition: The winter

season means less time spent outdoors and more time spent inside our homes. Make the most of cold days shuttered inside by creating something to look forward to each year, whether that be an annual brunch, passing down the family secret recipe, or creating your own family game night.

2 DIY spa day:

Even dad loves a good pedicure! Light the candles, grab your plushest robe, and scour the depths of your medicine cabinets to create your own spa right at home. Great days start with a massage and end with a face mask!

3 Virtual bake-off:

Up for a challenge? Put all those hours spent watching cooking shows to good use and host a virtual bake-off against friends or family. The taste test may be biased, but a little friendly competition to heat things up is never a bad way to spend a cold winter’s day!

4 Cookie decorating party:

Is it really winter if you’re not decorating sugar cookies? Get ready to get messy making memories in the kitchen. Whether you start from scratch or buy a prepared

kit from the grocery store, the silly smiles and sticky fingers will be the literal icing on top of a perfect activity!

5 Gather to give:

You don’t really need a new fuzzy blanket each season—but there could be someone who does! Teach your kiddos the value of helping others by gathering some gently used blankets, sweaters, winter coats, and more and dropping them off at a local thrift store or homeless shelter.

6 Indoor campfire:

Who needs the outdoors to gather around a warm fire? Work with what you’ve got—whether it’s a few candles or the fireplace “show” on Netflix—and cuddle up with the family over s’mores and spooky stories.

7 Share the love:

You may not see your neighbors out and about as much this season, so a handwritten note or a yummy dessert baked with love goes a long way. Plus, you never know—it could start a whole chain of pass-it-forward feelgood throughout the neighborhood!

APP OF THE MONTH

PERSONAL CAPITAL MORE THAN A BUDGETING APP

The gist: For a long time I tried different methods of managing my money. I tried Quicken, Mint, the classic Excel spreadsheet, and more. But then I met Personal Capital and I haven’t looked back since. That was four years ago.

The reason I was so excited to use Personal Capital is that it is not just a budgeting app. I can do that on an Excel spreadsheet. Personal Capital dives much deeper than other financial apps because it is based on growing your net worth. It tracks your investments and tells you when you are being charged high fees. You can connect assets such as your home through sites like Zillow. You can connect your debts and see how paying them off grows your net worth. And, of course, you can budget and track your cash flow. I recommend this app to anyone interested in becoming more financially stable.
