EDITOR’S NOTE
THIS SEASON, LESS IS MORE December should be the happiest and most joyful month of the year. But, for many, it is the most stressful! With Pinterest and social media, there is a certain pressure to create the perfect scene for the holidays. I get anxiety just thinking about the gifts, the decorating, and the social calendar. This year, my motto is going to be “less is more.” I want to focus on the things that really matter — spending time with family and making memories. As my kids get older, they may not remember what they got in their stockings in 2016, but they will remember baking sugar cookies, drinking cocoa, and driving around to look at the Plaza lights. This time of year is extra special because it brings together friends and family who you may only see once a year. I always think of the movie, “The Family Stone,” which might be one of the best family Christmas movies to date. We all can relate to awkward dinner conversations, differing political views, or couples’ drama that can come to a head this time of year. If you’re not quite looking forward to family get-togethers, turn to page 30 to find seven great tips on how to deal with family stress. While my Christmas may not be Pinterest-worthy, I am definitely going to make it one to remember! Here is to health and happiness in the New Year. Have a happy holiday!

Skin products are 95 percent organic and made with high-quality ingredients.
THE BENEFITS OF SKIN ON YOUR SKIN TM
Do you know how the typical skin care products are affecting your skin and your environment over the long-term? Stephanie Simkins, owner and founder of Skin KC, does — which is why she started her own line of skin care products called SKIN™. “While working as a nutrition consultant and wellness coach, I became disturbed at how many of my clients I had been helping to detoxify their

bodies who were actually using toxic products on their face and body,” Simkins says. “With a background in herbalism, holistic health, nutrition, and healthy catering, I started to formulate products for my clients to use.”
The mission of Simkins’ products has been twofold from the beginning. She has created all of her products to be the “cleanest and the most effective skin and body care with the least amount of environmental impact.”
Simkins’ desire to help her clients turned into a full line of skin care products. Although an online skin care company showed interest in her skin care line, she had never sold any of her products and didn’t know anything about retail. “I was a holistic health coach and did not even have a name for the products, but they wanted them, so I came up with the simplest thing I could think of at the time. My tagline was, ‘Real simple. Real ingredients.’ Thus SKIN was born.”
This twofold mission drives Simkins to create skin products that stand apart from other skin care. “My products are truly natural and 95 percent organic, using the highest quality, most effective ingredients for your face and body, paying careful attention to what each ingredient’s role is. There are no synthetics or toxic chemicals used in formulating my SKIN brand,” she explains. SKIN is also PETA- and green-certified, registered with the Environmental Working Group, and registered with Truth in Labeling.
A bonus: Simkins says her products are affordable despite being made with high-quality ingredients. “I want to keep it that way so a wide range of people can use healthy products,” she explains. “I don’t raise prices just to meet industry standards for organic,” says Simkins. Thanks to the line’s affordability, a wide range of clients have been able to experience their benefits. “I hear it every day how happy clients are to have found effective skin care without the toxic chemicals,” Simkins shares. Clients regularly tell her about how her products heal their skin and make them look younger, brighter, and healthier. “With the SKIN brand, you know exactly what you are getting,” she explains. “I consult with you about your skin type, your allergies, and your issues, and help you pick out the best products for you. You can sample and test all SKIN products before you purchase them,
and you should!” Simkins says she is working on new products to benefit her clients, and she’s rolling out new perfume oils, body butters, and facial mists soon. You can sign up for Skin KC’s email list to hear about product debuts as well as upcoming events. Skin KC is part of many local events, as Simkins likes to keep her company involved in the Kansas City community. “SKIN has several holiday events coming up with Made in KC, Green Acres Market, and Terra Health and Wellness.” If you are concerned about what is in your skin care products and are looking for a solution, Simkins’ SKIN products may be what you are looking for. Created to be clean and effective and have the least amount of environmental impact, these products are a quality alternative. “Each product delivers

The great minds behind Mastermind Escape Games give all players a chance to work together to solve a problem while having fun.

MASTERMIND ESCAPE GAMES: OVERLAND PARK’S BEST BRAIN TEASER If you’re a fan of the movies The Da Vinci Code and Inferno, where characters crack a series of seemingly unrelated clues until a puzzle is solved, then you’re already aware of how escape rooms work. And right here in Overland Park, the newest escape rooms will have you putting on your best Sherlock Holmes thinking caps! Mastermind Escape Games, a company that is expanding nationally, has recently opened a location with entertaining “escape rooms.” Partner Behman Zakeri is excited about the unique challenges Mastermind Escape Games will give everyone a chance to defeat. Mastermind Escape Games offers people the chance to work together as a group, using their problem-solving skills to make decisions under pressure. “Escape rooms are not only fun but great for team building,” Zakeri says. “It allows business owners and management an opportunity to observe who
takes command, who can delegate, who works well as a team, and so on.” At Mastermind Escape Games, the four themed escape rooms include The Sorcerer’s Secret (where you must investigate your uncle’s mysterious disappearance at his magic shop and escape an evil sorcerer’s magic lair before you suffer the same curse), Outbreak: Find the Cure (where a tour of the Centers for Disease Control results in a deadly virus being accidentally released, and you must find the cure and escape the lab before everyone is infected), The Bank Heist (where, as a member of a crime syndicate, you have to rob a bank, grab as much cash as you can, and escape before the cops arrive), and Lost in Time (where the team must travel back in time to stop an incident from occurring that will alter the course of human history). There are a few factors that will help your team have a successful escape room breakout. Dress comfortably because you will most likely find yourselves crawling on the floor and looking under and over items. Since you must work together, find someone who is a natural organizer because you’ll need to keep track of clues and keep them together. Make sure to look everywhere — clues are found in the
most unlikely places. And try to move and think as quickly as possible because time is of the essence!
Mastermind Escape Games offers people the chance to work together as a group, using their problem-solving skills to make decisions under pressure. Each team must figure out how to get out of the room within 60 minutes for it to be considered a successful escape. People visiting Mastermind Escape Games who are younger than 12 years old must be accompanied by an adult. Teams should arrive at least 15 minutes prior to their scheduled time to complete registration. Rooms can hold up to 10 people so if your team doesn’t fill a room, there’s a possibility that strangers may join your party during the hour. Rooms vary in difficulty but don’t worry — clues are given during the hour while you’re in the room to help you along if you get stuck. “We believe our rooms have the best themes in town and our customer service is top-notch,” Zakeri shares. “Considering it’s only $28 per person to enjoy an experience, this is a great way to spend a Friday or Saturday night out with a group of friends instead of catching a movie or going bowling. It’s also good for birthday parties or corporate outings for a change of pace.” If you’re looking for an experience that’ll get your heart racing, your brain buzzing, and your posse plotting together to save the planet, head to Mastermind Escape Games and start cracking codes! Mastermind Escape Games is located at 7810 W. 151st St. in Overland Park. Visit mastermindescapegames.com/ locations/escape-room-overland-parkks (which has videos of the rooms you can tour) or call 913.827.0999. SIMPLYKCMAG.COM | 15

Tips and Tricks for Keeping an Indoor Herb Garden Cooking with fresh herbs is a chef’s trick to making foods smell vibrant and taste great. Ingredients fresh off the stock easily add aroma and complex tastes in a single bound. It’s a trick that’s so easy, even amateur cooks can master it. However, cooking with fresh herbs is limited by season — when cold weather, frost, and freezing temps set in, it’s much harder to include these items in your cooking. But, in just a few simple steps, you can continue cooking with fresh herbs all year long — straight from your very own kitchen. Use these tips to maintain a year-round indoor herb garden:
Consider using small planters to make the best use of your space. Vertical wall space and window sills are great for keeping fresh herbs without sacrificing ample counter area.
GO SMALL.
DON’T OVER-WATER.
Unlike many other plants, herbs need very little space to grow.
16
| SIMPLYKCMAG.COM
This can hurt your herbs. Use a water spritzer or simply go easy
on your watering schedule to give your plants their best chance.
GROW WHAT YOU COOK.
There’s no use in spending time and energy by planting and harvesting herbs you won’t use. Instead, check out your spice cabinet and stick to those very seeds.
KEEP THEM TRIM.
Give your herbs a better shot at growth by trimming on a regular basis. Use sharp scissors and snip off however many herbs you need in your cooking. Ideally, this will be enough use to keep your plants from overgrowing. If not, trim and dry herbs for later. You can easily dry them in the oven (for a nice aroma) or lay plants out in a safe space and let time do the trick. If you’d prefer to keep your herbs fresh, keep sprigs in a separate tiny vase of water, or wrap them in a wet paper towel and keep in the fridge.
WHAT HERBS SHOULD YOU GROW? If you’re looking for simple, these are the easiest to grow:
basil bay chives lemongrass oregano
parsley rosemary sage tarragon thyme
GIVE HERBS SUNLIGHT.
They may be able to grow well indoors, but herbs still need plenty of sun. Be sure they have a straight shot at light on a regular basis. And, if growing from a sill, be mindful of chilly drafts that might harm the plants.
GET STARTER PLANTS.
Starting with an actual plant is much easier than starting from seeds. If you have already grown similar blends outdoors, simply transfer a few sprigs into your smaller pots. Or, head to a local produce shop and ask if you can purchase starter plants and/or sprigs for your indoor herb garden.

APP OF THE MONTH
FEEL SAFE NO MATTER WHERE YOU ARE The gist: Life forces you into some pretty scary situations, some-
times, and you may not feel comfortable carrying pepper spray, a gun, or dialing 911. But if you’ve got your smartphone, SafeTrek is with you. SafeTrek allows you to proactively protect yourself without the commitment of calling 911. If you’re feeling unsafe, simply launch the app and hold your thumb on the “safe” button. When you are safe, release your thumb and type in your four-digit PIN. If the situation turns for the worse and you need help, you just release your thumb and do not type in your PIN. The app determines up to a five-meter accuracy of your location within just five seconds, and notifies the local police about your location, name, and emergency. SafeTrek works anywhere in the U.S. and is available on both iOS and Android. The app costs $2.99 per month or $29.99 per year.

HOTEL SORELLA: EXOTIC MEETS MODERN Oh, you so know when you’ve crossed the threshold of a sophisticated hotel. It doesn’t have to scream to get your attention because it confidently beckons with its elegant décor, modern Europeaninspired architecture, and impeccable service and amenities. There’s only one hotel in Kansas City that can lay claim to all of these incredible features and more. Hotel Sorella, open since 2013 and unobtrusively nestled on the Country Club Plaza, is the newest and chicest hotel appearing on the Kansas City scene. This stylish hotel is refined in everything it offers — from its 132 tastefully appointed guest rooms to its four-diamond award-winning service and contemporary architecture. With its Mediterranean inspiration that pays homage to the Spanish Seville influence of the Country Club Plaza, Hotel Sorella blends Italian culture with
the best of the Midwest. It’s no wonder it’s garnered awards from Condé Nast Traveler as the No. 1 hotel in Kansas City for two years in a row, and Ingram’s best hotel in Kansas City. Dan Posch, Hotel Sorella’s director of sales and marketing, is exceedingly proud of not only the aesthetics of the hotel, but particularly of its customer service and culture of hospitality. “Since we are a smaller boutique hotel, we are able to comfortably focus on the guests we host,” Posch explains. “We take great care in ensuring our guests have a wonderful experience. Our staff is highly trained in providing the utmost in customer service.” Some of the everyday amenities include rooms appointed with luxury bedding, walk-in showers with rainfall showerheads, marble vanities, and posh bathrobes. Guests also can enjoy fitness and business centers, valet parking and free transportation within five miles of the hotel. “Hotel Sorella believes in being involved in the local community and as such, we use local vendors and spas for products and services as much as possible,” he says. “For instance, we have just introduced the highly acclaimed Spa on Penn spa services to the hotel. We find that this makes staying at Hotel Sorella
Country Club Plaza an experience that’s unique to Kansas City.”
One of the crown jewels of this amazing resort is the delicious food you’ll find here. But one of the crown jewels of this amazing resort is the delicious food you’ll find here. Let’s start with the complimentary European breakfast from Francesca’s Greenhouse Lounge that you enjoy as part of your stay. Rosso, Hotel Sorella’s top-notch restaurant, is run by renowned chef Charles d’Ablaing. While dining, you can enjoy breathtaking views of the city from the rooftop. Be sure to partake in a glass of wine from the list that garnered the “Best of” Award of Excellence from Wine Spectator two years running. Plus, Bar Rosso offers a delicious happy hour menu in a sumptuous environment that compares to none. “Chef d’Ablaing has impeccable credentials, yet is a very humble chef,” Posch shares. “He loves to prepare steaks using locally sourced beef, and gets produce from local farmers such as Hatfield Signature Beef in Maryville, Missouri. Chef d’Ablaing has cooked all over the country, including for dignitaries such as former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and former First Lady Laura Bush. We are extremely fortunate to have him back home in Kansas City and at Hotel Sorella.” Just in time for the holidays, Hotel Sorella is offering a fabulous package. “Between Dec. 16–30, if you book three consecutive nights, you get one night free. Three nights for the price of two,” Posch dishes. Make your reservations now to take advantage of this incredible offer. “REPEAT AFTER ME…”: ENCOURAGING PROPER SPEECH DEVELOPMENT IN CHILDREN Most parents eagerly await their child’s first words — and shortly thereafter, wonder why they were so anxious for the seemingly endless chatter that follows! 7 TIPS FOR DEALING WITH FAMILY STRESS DURING THE HOLIDAYS One of my family’s annual holiday traditions is watching “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation.” It’s always a refreshing and humorous — albeit exaggerated — reminder that spending time with your family can sometimes be a stressful situation. Many of us picture the holidays as the most wonderful time of the year, full of perfect moments and nonstop joy. But the truth is that holiday gatherings often are not picture-perfect (even if Facebook and Instagram make them appear to be). People are imperfect, and as hard as we may try to make the holidays stress-free, something will undoubtedly go awry. Here are some ways to help you deal

shopping. And don’t hesitate to ask your spouse and kids to help with tasks such as decorating, gift wrap-
ping, and setting the table. Having things done ahead of time can greatly reduce stressful last-minute scrambling that can lead to conflicts.
3. TRY TO SET ASIDE YOUR DIFFERENCES. Remember that just because you share genes, you don’t have to agree on everything. Having family together in a confined space for an extended period of time can make things especially tense. Try to avoid sensitive topics during conversations. It also helps to learn about and use effective conflict-management strategies, such as compromise, so that you know how to handle an argument should one arise. “Going into the relationship thinking about what bad things they’re going to do is a set up for failure,” Armour says. She suggests going to family gatherings with three to four reasonable, attainable actions — such as a handshake, looking a person in the eye, and giving a compliment — in order to gain a sense of accomplishment.
4. BE FLEXIBLE. Many people deal with juggling multiple family holiday celebrations. Remember that you don’t have to celebrate each holiday on its exact calendar date. Alternate years or meet with one family on the holiday itself and anoth-

er family the day before or after. Attend holiday-related events throughout the holiday months with various family members so that everyone feels included.
5. REMEMBER BALANCE IS KEY. It’s important to find a balance between caring for others and caring for yourself. It’s also important to balance activity-filled schedules and relaxation time. Holiday-related activities don’t have to be chaotic and overstimulating. Armour notes that children are especially susceptible to burnout because there’s a high intensity during the holidays. “Children are looking to us to create boundaries,” she says. Calm and quiet activities, such as reading by a fire, looking at ornaments on a Christmas tree, or baking cookies, are just as festive as outings.
6. SPREAD HOLIDAY CHEER.
The holidays are a time of
giving. Small gestures, such as baking cookies for your neighbors, are greatly appreciated. Sponsoring a needy family is a great way to give to those less fortunate. Or volunteer your time at a homeless shelter or by visiting with people who lack family. Focusing on giving rather than getting can help teach children to appreciate what they have instead of being upset about what they don’t.
7. GO ON VACATION.
If the holidays make you especially
stressed or depressed, you can always just opt out completely! However, keep in mind that this may create or intensify family conflict. Family conflict may not be completely avoidable, but by following these steps, you can both prevent and handle potential stressful situations throughout the holiday season.

Keeping Compost During Winter Months As winter continues, it will become increasingly difficult to keep your compost pile going through the cold months. But it’s worth it to try — think about all the nutritious fertilizer you’ll have for the spring! Here are some tips on how to maintain compost during the cold winter months. 1. K eep the leaves you raked up during the fall. Leaves are great for composting and definitely are a wonderful way to take care of those pesky piles. Store them under a cover and add to the compost when needed. 2. I nsulate the compost. This could be as simple as moving the compost to a sunny part of your yard. with leaves, sawdust, or hay to keep it warm. Or, you could build a shelter around the compost. 3. K eep the moisture out. All compost piles, bins, tumblers, etc. need a level of moisture. However,
Model: Kolbe Murray
You can cover the active portion of the compost
there’s always too much of a good thing. Snow and early spring rain can make the compost too damp and end up killing all of the bacteria in your compost 4. S hred your green materials. Green materials, include food scraps and other nitrogen-rich materials. The microbes in compost can struggle to digest these in the winter months, so give them a boost by hand-shredding the green materials into sizes no more than 2 inches.

Seeing students learn and grow, or building relationships with your kids is pretty rewarding. Finding a job in this field usually requires prior experience or a teaching degree.
BLOGGER If you want the freedom of working for yourself, setting your own hours, and traveling whenever you want, blogging can be a good part-time job. This is a competitive market, though, and it can be hard to stand apart from the thousands of blogs filling the internet. If you are patient and build a following, you can generate income from your ads. Google AdSense allows Google to place ads on your blog and pay you a fee when someone clicks. The upside is this job requires little to no money to start and your ceiling is high. The downside, though, is that you may put in a lot of hours of work before you see any return, and the competition is fierce.

Local Trendsetters Pick Their Favorite Hot Spots Around KC

FAVORITE DRINK IN KC?
For coffee, you can find me at
Parisi Cafe in Park Place multiple times a week. When it comes to adult beverages, I prefer wine or bubbly over cocktails. I love the bellinis at Pierponts in Union Station.
WHERE DO YOU GO FOR SOME LOCAL RETAIL THERAPY? Kansas City has a nice mix of boutiques and I try to support local businesses as much as possible. Anaphora in Prairiefire has amazing basics and unique brands in my favorite neutral shades. For trendier pieces, Etiquette Boutique in Park Place is my go-to. If I’m in the downtown area, I love stopping by Garment District to shop the SCOOBIE collection.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE HIDDEN GEM IN TOWN?
There are so many neat spots in the KC area. But, I think
many people forget about Crestwood, which is in my neighborhood. It’s located in between the Plaza and Brookside, and it has some of the best restaurants and local shops. Aixois is my brunch go-to.
FAVORITE PLACE TO TAKE OUT-OF-TOWN GUESTS? Downtown, hands down. There is so much to do and experience now! First, check out the view from the Liberty Memorial. From there, take the streetcar to River Market to experience the City Market and pick up fresh flowers. Grab a bite at the new nearby eateries, like Brown & Loe. End the downtown tour by enjoying cocktails or a night out in Kansas City Power & Light District.
BEST MEAL IN KC? I’m currently loving everything that Plate in Brookside has to offer. Start with antipasti, share their small plates (the ravioli is a solid choice), and enjoy the intimate, modern atmosphere.

FESTIVE COCKTAILS & TODDIES
'T is
the season to be merry!
With the brisk, bitter wind outside, warm up with a festive cocktail during this season! You don’t need a reason — wrapping gifts, book club, holiday parties ... cleaning after the holiday parties ... following the children’s band concert, or, in case your relatives are driving you just a little bit crazy! Try a hot toddy (a shot or two of any potent spirit added to a cup of hot water, sugar, and the occasional spice). Make it super yummy with a slug of brandy in your favorite mulled apple cider, warmed stove-top with fresh cinnamon sticks and cloves. Splash some bourbon in your eggnog with a dash of cinnamon to spice it up! Lastly, Irish whiskeys work best for hot holiday punches. Here are just a few more ideas to consider this season.

TULIP: A KANSAS CITY STYLE UNMATCHED The Country Club Plaza is one of the most beautiful places in Kansas City. Its Spanish architecture and sidewalks embellished with fountains make up the aura of a bustling Kansas City. One thing that doesn’t go unnoticed at the Country Club Plaza is the shopping experiences. The stores have a style unmatched. Tulip, a women’s clothing boutique, sits at the heart of Kansas City fashion on the Country Club Plaza.
Robin Luther has an uncanny ability to help women of all shapes and ages find clothes that flatter them and ensure they leave feeling inspired.
State University. She worked her way through school at a part-time job at Maurices, a clothing retail company. But her best retail and fashion skills came from an unexpected industry — the staffing industry. A few years after college, Luther took an opportunity to work in sales at an independent, locally owned temporary staffing company. “My plan was to work a couple years, polish some selling skills, and prepare for my next career step,” she shares. “The owners were innovative and dynamic — true leaders in the staffing industry. I learned so much that the couple years turned out to be 14. Even today, I find myself circling back to those lessons learned and incorporating them here at Tulip.” Prior to moving to Kansas City, Luther worked for an independent rep at the Chicago Apparel Mart. When not working at the market, her focus turned to entrepreneurship. She began traveling across central Illinois, consulting and assisting with accessory buying and boutique display for local gift boutiques and salons. cont. on next page
Tulip is a women’s clothing boutique catering to locals and visitors and boasting a Kansas City style all their own. When you walk into Tulip, you can expect to feel as though you’ve walked into a fashion magazine photoshoot. Tulip offers an array of fashionable yet affordable handpicked clothing, accessories, and gifts. The clothing varies from that “must-have” top to a cocktail dress for a special night out. Stylists at Tulip know an outfit is not complete until it’s accessorized, and Tulip’s accessory lines are always on point, keeping you up to the current trends. There’s a good reason Tulip draws devoted women, locals, and visitors alike — its personal attention. Tulip’s stylists are there to blend their fashion savvy as well as their service. Robin Luther is the owner of Tulip. Her job entails more than simply managing a women’s clothing boutique. The success at Tulip rests on her uncanny ability to help women of all shapes and ages find clothes that flatter them and ensure they leave feeling inspired. “Our customers have told us they love our personal attention,” Luther says. “It’s the cute gift box, dropping off purchases at hotels, and making them a reservation for dinner while shopping.” Luther’s close eye to details can be attributed to her career history. In 2008, Luther found herself in Kansas City and opened the doors to Tulip. Today, Tulip is still at the Plaza, in a new location off Ward Parkway. Relationships with customers are a priority to Luther and her stylists, but there is a behind-the-scenes at Tulip. “Our boutique experience has allowed us to create lasting and strong relationships with showrooms and designers,” Luther says. Pulling trends from major markets, such as New York City, are a requirement in the fashion world. 2 RISK! This live show features high-profile guests, such as Sarah Silverman,
Margaret Cho, and Marc Maron, who drop the act and show a side of themselves you’ve never seen before. During the weekly podcast, guests tell deeply personal true stories. The podcast is at times shocking, at times touching, at times both — and always a fun time.

CALL YOUR GIRLFRIEND Ann Friedman and Aminatou Sow are long-distance best friends who chat bi-weekly about what’s going on with ladies in the news and pop culture. The two women are both highbrow and lowbrow, unapologetically feminist, and not afraid to #realtalk each other about everything from menstrual cycles to workplace drama. MYSTERY SHOW You could call host Starlee Kine a detective — but she’s not solving crimes. Instead, Kind investigates the odd, banal human mysteries — like who an intricate belt buckle originally belonged to or how a video store could suddenly disappear. Although Kine is on a hiatus from Mystery Show, you most definitely should give a listen to her first six cases. 99% INVISIBLE Ever wonder how inflatable men came to be regular fixtures at used car lots? Curious about the origin of the fortunate cookie? What’s up with all those UTBAPHs (stores that used to be a Pizza Hut)? 99% Invisible is about all the thought that goes into the things we don’t think about — the unnoticed architecture and design that shape our world. HOW DID THIS GET MADE You’ve miraculously made it to the end of a truly horrible B-movie and are questioning how it ever got made in the first place. Comedian/actor Paul Scheer (of “The League” fame), his wife June Diane Raphael, and comedian Jason Mantzoukas (also from “The League”) feel your pain. Twice a week, they pick a movie to tear apart in an attempt to figure out how the heck it got made. HAPPIER WITH GRETCHEN RUBIN If you’re truly hoping to become an idealized version of yourself but have found that self-improvement books haven’t helped you, give this podcast a try. Gretchen (who is super organized) hosts the podcast with her sister Elizabeth (not quite so organized). Their sisterly dynamic and surprising advice are the keys to this podcast’s success.
