The first week was a challenge as it was a change, but I knew I was onto something great and feeling better just a couple short days in. At the end of the program I retested for Lupus and the results were so much better than they were 30 days prior. I now feel hydrated, my skin is glowing and I am down 13 LBS and 18.5 inches! PUBLISHER’S NOTE

CRUISING FOR CHRISTMAS LIGHTS

I believe the holiday traditions we cling to the most as adults are the ones we en-

joyed most as children. For some people, that might mean pine trees covered with popcorn tinsel. For others, the holidays may be incomplete without an afternoon of decorating gingerbread houses. For me and my sister, the one thing that made Christmas … well, Christmas … was bundling up with blankets and hot cocoa and piling into the car to go hunting for those amazing holiday lights. Sure, we drove through plenty of areas with less-thanstellar displays, but when we found those gems, we were ecstatic. We actually didn’t have to go far to find truly special displays. The homes in my neighborhood really went all out. The blue-and-white house on the corner with a wrap-around porch topped their roof with Santa’s sleigh, complete with reindeer and Santa himself holding a list of “good” children’s names. That list always changed to include the names of the kids living in the neighborhood. It was such a joy to see my name up there! And I’m sure I annoyed my parents pointing out the fact that I was already on that “good” list every time we drove past. If you’ve never driven around to check out the lights, it’s a great way to get into the holiday spirit. So, grab your coats and pay homage to the season with a stroll or drive through the five areas we included in our Around Town story on page 20. We also want to know where your favorite holiday light displays are in the metro. What didn’t make our list? What neighborhood always seems to be under-represented? We can’t wait to hear your responses on our Facebook page! From the SIMPLYkc Magazine family to yours, we hope you have a wonderful holiday.

Bariatric Surgery Shrinks Weight and Disease Risk For many people, the New Year is a time of hope. It’s a time to embrace new beginnings and think about changes you can make in your life to lead to a healthier, happier you. Losing weight is a popular New Year’s resolution, and those who successfully lose weight and keep it off enjoy physical and mental health benefits. A healthy weight

Words by Jackie Woods

gives us more energy and confidence, but people may not realize it also helps our bodies function more efficiently and reduces our risk for many diseases, including cancer. In fact, according to the Centers for Disease Control, obesity is a strong risk factor in developing at least 13 types of cancers, including endometrial, breast, colorectal, ovarian, kidney, pancreatic, liver and esophagus, to name a few. Cancers closely associated with obesity account for about 40% of all cancers diagnosed each year. Ryan Strain, M.D., with The Bariatric Center of Kansas City at Shawnee Mission Health – Prairie Star, is committed to helping patients understand the health benefits of weight reduction. Dr. Strain performs bariatric surgical procedures

and believes keeping a normal weight is key to preventing disease. “Maintaining a healthy weight is one of the most important things you can do to prevent cancer,” Dr. Strain says. “Overweight individuals often have a higher level of inflammatory chemicals in their body, which can damage DNA and lead to cancer over time.” Dr. Strain also explains how obesity increases fat cells in the body, and those fat cells play a role in developing disease. “Fat cells produce excess amounts of estrogen,” he says, “which is a hormone that can increase the risk of multiple types of cancers.” While some people can keep their weight in check with healthy eating habits and regular exercise, other Americans have struggled with weight for years. As we age, it seems tougher to lose weight. So, unfortunately, some people never reach a healthy weight in their lifetime. Those individuals who have been unsuccessful in losing weight on their own and have a Body Mass Index of 40 or higher, or a BMI of 35 to 39.9 with one or more medical conditions related to obesity, often are the best candidates for bariatric surgery. Dr. Strain helps patients fight obesity by giving them the tools needed to achieve and maintain a healthy weight. For his patients, the journey starts with bariatric surgery, which results in weight loss

and several other health benefits. “When patients come to us considering bariatric surgery, we discuss the chronic medical conditions that will improve, or often be cured, after surgery such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension, osteoarthritis, sleep apnea, high cholesterol, and GERD,” Dr. Strain explains. “We also emphasize how bariatric surgery decreases the risk of certain types of cancers as well as increases life expectancy.” The fact that a healthy weight helps the body decrease inflammation and maintain a healthy hormone balance, causing less damage to cells and ultimately lowering the risk

of cancer, is reason enough to take control of your health. For many patients, deciding to have bariatric surgery is the first step to achieving a healthy lifestyle, but bariatric surgery patients must continue their commitment long after surgery. “Bariatric surgery is a lifelong commitment to health and wellness,” he says. “We continue to follow our patients for life after surgery, and we encourage them to stay active and make healthy diet choices.” The Bariatric Center of Kansas City provides comprehensive medical, nutritional, psychological, and social education and support to patients

after surgery. Patients have full access to support groups, can stay in close contact with the medical team, and get advice for changing eating habits — all tools that are invaluable in helping patients maintain good health while reducing their risk for cancer and other diseases. AROUND TOWN

Words by Julie Burton

A KANSAS CITY SPARKLE OF LIGHTS Drumroll, please. Drumroll.

Ceremony took place in 1930.

Clark Griswold’s “250 strands of lights, 100 individual bulbs per strand for a grand total of 25,000 imported Italian twinkle lights” is an impressive sight in the snowy suburb of Chicago. But that’s Chicago. And it’s not a real house.

A crew of electricians begins installing the lights after Labor Day. The Light Ceremony takes place Thanksgiving evening and they remain on nightly through mid-January. By March, all the lights are removed and stored until next year. The complete process takes six months.

Get off your couch, bundle up, and get in the car. Pack (not so) hot cocoa for the kids and maybe a few blankets. It’s time to see KC sparkle during the season of light. Drumroll, please.

COUNTRY CLUB PLAZA LIGHTS 4706 Broadway Blvd. / KCMO

It’s difficult to imagine Christmastime in KC without envisioning the Country Club Plaza lights, which will be on display in November for its 89th year. The tradition started in 1925 with a single six-foot strand of colored lights strung over the doorway of the Suydam building. As the Plaza added buildings, the Christmas decor grew, too. The first Plaza Lighting

You can purchase retired Plaza lightbulbs — a perfect final touch for your gift wrapping — at Perfect Scents on the Plaza.

CHRISTMAS CARD LANE Mission Ridge Subdivision 151st & Ridgeview / Olathe

A neighborhood in Olathe holds one of the longest running holiday light displays in the area. For more than 25 years Mission Ridge has transformed into Christmas Card Lane during the holidays. You may hear carolers. Santa may be there to hand out candy canes. But one thing you definitely will see are oversized Christmas cards on the lawns. Each card is from their home

to yours, wishing you a merry holiday season. Although the number of homeowners participating in this tradition is dwindling, it's worth a visit. Several displays are large enough to be the stars of the show. To reach Christmas Card Lane, take 151st Street east from I-35 to Ridgeview Road. Turn left on Ridgeview. Enter Christmas Card Lane on Frontier Lane or Butterfield Place.

PAULIE’S PENGUIN PLAYGROUND 16617 Indian Creek Pkwy. / Olathe

Don’t leave Olathe quite yet. A quick eight-minute drive is Paulie’s Penguin Playground. It’s the only light display in this list that welcomes visitors during the day, too. The Craig Family Christmas display started in 2004 with 15 penguins and a few Christmas lights. Paul Craig, aka, “Paulie,” lost his mother to leukemia several years ago. Craig didn’t care about Christmas for a few years after his mom passed away. But then he found the colorful penguin inflatables and decided to play a joke on his wife about her passion for penguins. Thus, Paulie’s Penguin Playground was born. Nearly 150 lighted penguins fill most of the Craig family’s yard at Mur-Len Road and Indian Creek Parkway in Olathe. It is one of the largest single displays in Johnson County and one of the largest Christmas displays across the entire city. And, if you or the kids want snow this year, the Penguin Playground has its own snowmaking machine.

CHRISTMAS IN THE PARK AT LONGVIEW LAKE Frank White Jr. Softball Complex 3901 S.W. Longview Park Dr. / Lee's Summit

cuddle up in your car with hot drinks, cookies, and blankets. The Holiday Lights on Farmstead Lane is a 38-minute light show you can watch from the parking lot of Deanna Rose Farmstead in Overland Park.

The display is at the main entrance of the Farmstead and is synchronized with music on 90.5 Rose FM. You are free to come and go as you please. Shows are nightly, from 5 to 11 p.m.

Summer may be long gone, but there’s still a reason to visit Longview Lake in Lee’s Summit. It's hosting the 31st annual Christmas in the Park. The free drivethrough holiday display features more than 300,000 lights and 175 animated scenes over two miles. While there's no charge visit, donations are accepted on-site for 39 local Kansas City charities.

FROM SOCCER PLAYER TO SEAFOOD CHEF

SHEILA LUCERO OF JAX FISH HOUSE & OYSTER BAR Sheila Lucero, a former semipro soccer player, began working at Jax Fish House & Oyster Bar in downtown Denver while she was still in culinary school. She’s worked her way up from line cook to sous chef to executive chef entirely at Jax Fish House. Lurcero helped opened the Kansas City location, among others, and is overjoyed to share her love of sustainable seafood with our community. What makes Kansas City stand out compared to Denver? The easy answer is barbecue, but there are a lot of things. I like the history and the small music spots. There’s a lot of great places to listen to good music and get a great cocktail. I love having a night off in KC and trying out new places. Where would you most like to escape to for a week? I’d probably go back to Japan. There’s just so much in Tokyo. It’s sensory overload. I need more time there. I love and crave that cuisine and culture. I could really just dive in. What was your favorite dish growing up, and who cooked it? My dad was kind of the inspiration for me to become a chef. He’s always been a fantastic cook. He’s Hispanic, so we grew up with really great green chili and enchiladas. Those meals are just unforgettable and always craveable.

Do you have a guilty pleasure food? Totally. Usually grilled cheese. I don’t eat junk food, but occasionally I will dabble with Tapatio-flavored Doritos. In the last few weeks, I’ve been eating a lot of peanut butter sandwiches — just creamy peanut butter, grape jelly, white bread. It’s so satisfying. What's an indispensable tool in the kitchen? The million dollar tool, which we talk about a lot, is a spatula. Making sure everybody’s getting every last bit and piece and ounce of whatever they’re taking out of a container. What cuisine would you like to master? There are so many! I love to eat Indian food and I haven’t spent enough time diving into the history of that cuisine and getting to know the flavor profiles. I also haven’t gotten into the Moroccan or North African cuisines. Some of those flavor profiles play into Indian food as well. I’ve always been a big fan of Asian dishes, also. I would love to learn more about Chinese cuisine and all the different areas there. What do you like to do in your free time? My husband and I are into sports and athletics. He runs a soccer club so I spend a lot of time on soccer fields, watching sports, hiking, and running. I also love to read. If I have time to sit down and flip through a cookbook, it’s just the best.

KACIE HOW TO BREAK UP WITH YOUR HAIRSTYLIST So, the last time I went to see my stylist, I asked for a change from the same old, same old. I requested beachy waves, but ended up with a frizzy version of Shirley Temple ringlets. Now that I’ve tamed the beast, I’m not sure I trust her anymore. What should I do?

The breakup. Taylor Swift and her groupies of tweens and middle-aged women say it best: “We are never ever, ever, getting back together.” You may feel like you want to sing this to your hairstylist in your Shirley Temple ringlets but singing in public is hard. And so is breaking up with your hairstylist. No matter what you may have confessed while in the hot seat, your business is based on business. You’re there to get a service, and if you no longer desire that service — for whatever reason — you absolutely have the right to take your business elsewhere. That being said, there’s no reason you can’t terminate your stylist-client relationship on a decent note. Kindly and honestly, let your stylist know your intentions to move on. Explain why, if you feel like it could help her with future clients, or don’t, if you don’t feel like sharing. That way, she can take constructive criticism at face value and do with it what she may. As with any profession, hairdressers network with each other. Unkind words may find your hair in the hands of someone who has heard what you said about your previous stylist. You don’t want to be known as one who sings about break ups, do you?

If you have any questions you’d like Kacie to answer, submit them to contact@simplykcmag.com.

MAINSTREAM BOUTIQUE: A PASSION FOR HELPING PEOPLE FEEL GOOD THROUGH FASHION Words by Rebecca Fischer / Photos by Jami Marshall

When Carol Culkin relocated to Kansas City six years ago in support of her husband’s career move, she was feeling a bit lost.

Not only was she in an entirely new place, but she had also given up her own career as a top-producing real estate agent in Upstate New York. On top of that, her father passed away just before they moved here. Then, she lost her mother shortly after the move.

percentage of the sales go to the hostess or a charity. A customer recently brought in her sister — and a bottle of Prosecco — and the two had fun discovering new looks. “Helping women create their own personal style and empowering them through fashion is what my team and I are all about,” Culkin says. “We want to help women feel confident and have fun creating and perfecting their personal style.”

Little did she know she was about to discover a new life — a new passion — as the owner of Mainstream Boutique. In a way, she was returning to her roots. Culkin spent her high school and some of her college years working at a clothing chain in Central New York, starting as a sales associate and moving her way up to become an assistant buyer. She dreamed of attending the Fashion Institute of Technology in Manhattan, but her parents convinced her business school made more sense. Owning the boutique now combines the best of both worlds: Culkin gets to use her business training and her eye for fashion. Plus, she gets to contribute something positive to her client’s lives. “As a real estate agent, I helped people accomplish their dream of owning a home,” Culkin says. “The boutique is different, but I’m still helping people. We’re here to empower women through fashion.” CONNECTING THROUGH FASHION

CHRISTMAS EVERY DAY

With new items delivered almost every day, Culkin’s pretty sure the UPS guy enjoys the greeting he gets when he walks into the boutique as much as clients do. Carol Culkin owns and operates two Mainstream Boutique locations in Olathe and Overland Park.

“We want to help women feel confident and have fun creating and perfecting their personal style.”

“It’s like he’s Santa, and it’s Christmas morning for us every day,” she says. “I want every client to find something new no matter how often they shop with us.”

thought of but looks great on them,” Culkin says. “It’s really fun to open someone’s eyes to what fashion can do.”

Mainstream Boutique is a Minneapolis-based franchise founded by Marie DeNicola in 1991 to offer multigenerational fashions and trendy styles for both junior and missy women. Orders can be placed only with “approved” vendor lines, but the list is extensive, Culkin says, giving her a wide variety of product selections. She regularly keeps in touch with some of the 80 or so other franchise owners to discuss what’s trending and share ideas about managing a business.

The store offers one-to-one style consulting, as well as “girls’ night out” after-hours parties, in which a

In addition to women’s apparel, the boutique offers shoes, accessories, and some gift items.

Mainstream Boutique offers multigenerational women’s fashion, shoes, and accessories.

Among the many brands offered is Mac and Me, the franchise’s exclusive line. Mac and Me Jeans are a hot seller, as is the Liverpool brand. In fact, Culkin recently brought in a style expert from Liverpool for an event. Customers got expert advice on how to find the perfect pair of jeans, and Mainstream Boutique’s stylists increased their fashion knowledge. Culkin held a similar event with New York City style expert and red carpet commentator George Brescia earlier this year. Brescia visited both stores and offered one-to-one consultations. Suffice it to say, both events were packed. Whether you’re looking for a new piece or want a totally new look, check out Mainstream Boutique (mainstreamboutique.com) at 9540 Nall Ave. in Overland Park and 15056 S. Blackbob Road in Olathe.

BEAUTY

Words by Chelsea Brimer

BOOST YOUR CONFIDENCE, BE LESS CRITICAL OF YOURSELF Almost everyone can benefit from a confidence boost now and then, but what, exactly, is self-confidence, and how can you increase it? Simply put, self-confidence is a sense of satisfaction with, and trust in, your feelings, abilities, and personal judgment. It’s what allows you to be positive yet realistic about yourself and your situations. So what happens when you don’t feel confident? According to the Mayo Clinic, “low self-confidence can negatively affect virtually every facet of your life, including your relationships, your job, and your health.” But there are steps you can take to boost self-confidence, even if you’ve felt bad about yourself for years.

34

| SIMPLYKCMAG.COM

Perspective plays an important part in how you see yourself and the world around you — the whole glass-is-half-empty versus glass-ishalf-full business. Both viewpoints are true, but one allows for a more positive outlook on life than the other. If you can learn to adopt the glass-is-half-full view, your self-confidence will start to rise. For instance, if you find yourself always running late, don’t beat yourself up over it — acknowledge the fact that you may show up late, but at least you always get there. Another way to help change your perspective is to start focusing on your talents instead of your flaws. What do you love doing? What is it that you do well? Take pride in those things; it will help you feel

accomplished, which in turn will help build your confidence. Next, recognize your insecurities and listen to your thoughts about them. According to the Mayo Clinic, self-criticizing situations might include a family crisis, business presentation, job loss, or trouble with a spouse, loved one, or coworker. What do you tell yourself about those situations or behaviors? Are you beating yourself up? Pay attention to your self-talk and see if you can take a more positive outlook or approach. Make sure that you are not comparing yourself to others. Boosting your self-confidence means improving yourself and the way you feel, not trying to make your life

Where Therapy & Wellness Meet

exactly the same as someone else’s. Their lives are irrelevant to yours; what is relevant is caring about yourself and advancing your own personal goals and aspirations. So forget about them! Do some soul searching of your own and find out what standards you want for yourself. Once you begin changing your perspective, you can start taking actions to boost your confidence. Here are some tips and tricks you can use to keep self-criticism in check and kick your self-confidence into high gear: • Accept compliments gracefully. Don’t roll your eyes or say negative things about yourself in response. Smile and thank the person who complimented you. •T ake up more space. Check your body posture throughout the day — are you slouching? Leaning forward? Making yourself look smaller? Sit or stand up straight and throw back those shoulders; studies have shown that confident posture projects confidence to others, and will, in turn, make you feel more confident. •H elp others. Even little things, like holding the door open for others or being sure to thank those who help you will brighten your day. And when those around you see you being kind and helpful all the time, they will be more kind and helpful, too. And then you’ve made the world a better place. • Put care into your appearance. You don’t have to look like Cindy Crawford or George Clooney, just take some time every day to maintain basic personal hygiene: shower, brush your teeth, fix your hair, and wear clean clothes that fit you properly. People tend to treat you with more respect when they can see that you treat yourself with respect.

AGAINST THE BACKDROP: BEEHIVE STUDIOS Words by Julie Burton / Photos by Jami Marshall

If you set your focus on the West Bottoms and zoom a little more, there’s a single red brick building standing at 13th Terrace and Hickory. It’s been there nearly 140 years. Once inside, you’ll find what you would expect for a building older than any living person in Kansas City — dark hardwood floors, brick walls, a vintage elevator, and the softest light spilling in through the windows. Pro photographers are always searching for the beautiful light. Yet, everyone’s definition of beauty is different. Your definition of beauty is what Melissa Slater, owner of Beehive Studios, strives to create.

As with any industry, the photographer community is close in KC. Many photographers share equipment, tricks of the trade, and location referrals. “I’ve been a photographer for 24 years. I’ve worked in New York City to L.A. to Tuscan,” she explains “In the Midwest, people here are cool. We lift each other up. It’s a special group here in Kansas City.”

“I’m in the business of giving people art,” Slater says. Her business is renting loft studio spaces for photography or small events. Slater rents out three studios, each named after areas where she lived in New York City. Each studio is on its own floor, totaling more than 3,000 square feet. Slater doesn’t rent empty studios — unless that’s what you’re looking for. She creates your vision of a beautiful space. “Beehive Studios is different because of all the little things,” she says “I can make a studio look like a living room, kitchen, bedroom, commercial set, or dining area. I build sets. That’s what I do.”

Kate Nickols of Kathryn Lee Bridal has a lot to say about BeeHive Studios. “I've done two photoshoots for my business in BeeHive Studios,” Nickols says. “There is a wide range of natural backgrounds to use for any feel you'd want. The wood-planked walls create a rustic look, the brick walls have a modern industrial feel, and the solid walls are great for a minimalistic look.

Some of Slater’s commercial clients include Hallmark and Charlie Hustle. She also welcomes photographers coming for photo shoots with newborns, families, boudoir, or high school seniors. BeeHive Studios has hosted every-

“The best part is all the rooms can be ready to use back to back without having to change the whole setup,” Nickols continues. “The tall ceilings and huge windows are amazing. They let in so much natural light. It’s a perfect place for any shoot.”

Melissa Slater, owner of Beehive Studios, can transform her studios to accommodate any photo shoot or event.

thing from rap music videos to a trapeze artist exhibit. Slater offers full range of the building including hallways, doorways, and even outside, using her studio as a “home base” for outfit changes.

BeeHive Studios is also available for events. Slater hosts small parties such as wedding showers, engagement parties, and even children’s birthday parties. “Most people show me their Pinterest page and I take that and run,” she says. “I handle it all — handmade gifts for guests, tables, tablecloths, centerpieces, serving dishes, balloons, a welcome sign. This is a full-service studio. That’s what’s fun for me — planning your event so you don’t have to.” Rebecca Hayes, owner of Rebecca Haymes Photography, often uses

"I build sets. I can make a studio look like a living room, kitchen, bedroom, commercial set, or dining area." BeeHive Studios as an event space. “We rented the space for a Christmas party,” she shares “Melissa really made the whole process as

easy as it possibly could be. She is an incredibly gifted visionary so I hired her to decorate. She stayed under our budget and the whole space was over-the-top amazing. She even set up a space for the kids to do crafts. Genius.” KC may make a beautiful backdrop but BeeHive Studios puts you in focus. BeeHive Studios is located at 1317 W. 13th Terrace., Ste. 2/D in Kansas City, Missouri. Find BeeHive Studios at facebook.com/beehivephotographystudios.

The three lofts at Beehive Studios in the West Bottoms are named after neighborhoods in New York.

PARENTING

Words by Stacey Hatton

will scream for all food groups and every item in the house that's just out of reach? Distraction is an effective tool for moments like this. Pull out those reams of paper and crayons, or a handful of pipe cleaners to make into fun creations. Take your kid's focus off of you onto a fun activity. It takes practice, but it's an important parental skill to master.

TAMING TEMPER TANTRUMS Do you have a screamer, floorwrither, kicker, stomper, or a breath-holder? No doubt these episodes are challenging. However, it's a prime time to educate your head-spinning child on how to behave in public. And the earlier you get him to understand what acceptable behavior is, the better off the teen years will be!

ORIGINS Sometime during the second year of life, tots determine whether Mom and Dad’s rules are rigid. They test boundaries and life gets louder and more frustrating for the entire family. Boys and girls are equal in their frequency and

38

| SIMPLYKCMAG.COM

levels of tantrums, and there's no clear cut-off for when they will cease. Depending on gene pool and behavior modification on the your part, your children could have occasional or habitual tantrums. Young children don’t have the equivalent emotional control that (most) adults have, so kiddos display their frustrations, lack of verbal communication skills, and desire for independence via tantrums.

PREVENTION The best way to avoid temper tantrums is to spot one coming and head it off. Sometimes they catch you off guard, but typically there are signs a meltdown is about to make a presence. Often your child feels she isn’t getting enough attention, she will try various tricks. After all, why is it every time an urgent phone call comes in, your perfectly behaved child

Another way to prevent tantrums is to give your child control over small things. Love and Logic is a parenting model developed by Jim Fay and Foster W. Cline, MD, which recommends offering choices. “Do you want to brush your hair first or brush your teeth?” Does it really matter which gets done first? No. But your kid will feel as if his opinion matters. Also, knowing the limits of your child is important in preventing tantrums. If he has missed his nap for the last three days and he's hungry and you need to go grocery shopping for the entire week, odds are your kid's going to flip out during this trip.

MANAGEMENT Staying calm and collected when your child is heaving toys off store shelves is difficult, but essential. “Having enough self-control for both of you,” says The Nemours Foundation, is the No. 1 thing a parent must do during a tantrum. Two tantrums are not going to help — that behavior is just telling your kid that yelling is OK. Ignoring tantrums is suitable at times, if your child is in no harm to herself or others; but keep her in sight. “If a safety issue is involved and a toddler repeats the forbidden behavior after being told to stop,

use a time-out or hold the child firmly for several minutes," according to the organization. "Kids must understand you are inflexible on safety issues.” "Time-outs” are for more stubborn tantrums. Place your child in a pre-designated area. He should stay seated in the spot for the amount of minutes per year of age of the child (i.e., two minutes for a 2-year-old). After he's calmed down, you should explain why he was put there, and ask for an apology. After a hug, your child may get up from the time-out location. Grade–schoolers can be sent to their rooms to calm down from a tantrum. No time limits are necessary, but they shouldn’t leave their room until they have calmed down.

This lets them practice their coping skills. Remember: consistency with house rules for all age groups is crucial.

what is bothering him can be cathartic. • I ncrease physical activity. Children who have “hot” tempers might benefit from increasing their physical play. Outside play with friends, team sports, or anything to get them moving and releasing endorphins is a great stress reliever.

OLDER CHILDREN TANTRUM TOOLS • Walk away from conflict. Allow your kid to refocus and calm down, without elevating her emotions.

CONSULT A MEDICAL PROVIDER IF:

• Label emotions. Teaching your children to express their anger by using the words “I’m mad because …” is an effective model. It helps get their anger out and aids you in correctly understanding why your child is mad. Make sure to thank your child for sharing with you.

•T antrums increase in frequency, intensity, or duration. •Y our child frequently hurts herself or others. • Your child is destructive. • Your child displays mood disorders such as negativity, low self- esteem, or extreme dependence.

•L et anger out safely, such as ripping up old magazines or newspapers. If you have an artistic child, turning on his favorite music and either drawing or writing about

THE QUICK GUIDE TO CLEANING YOUR HOME Chores never seem to end. It seems like as soon as you complete one task, a host of others are fighting to be your next point of focus. When the dishes are done, the countertops need to be scrubbed. If you scrub the countertops, you can’t forget the stovetop and, of course, the oven. By now, your floors need to be swept and mopped.

depends on how much carpet is in your home and where it’s located. If your home has carpet in high-traffic locations, such as living rooms and bedrooms, you should be vacuuming at least once per week. “Every house is different, though,” explains Nancy Alt, owner of Lulu & Mimi’s Cleaning in Overland Park. “If you have pets, obviously you want to vacuum more frequently. It also depends on whether you have hard surface floors.” These floors should be vacuumed more often.

need more mopping. That being said, you want to be careful with a wood floor because you don’t want to put a whole lot of water on it. You need to try to get by with less mopping than you would with a tile floor.”

MOPPING

But, with a little bit of prep work, you can infuse some method into the madness of seemingly endless chores ... and actually reduce some of the work you're doing.

In high-traffic areas, Alt recommends mopping every two to three weeks and after any spills. You should sweep before mopping to ensure they get as clean as possible. “It also depends on the weather,” Alt says. “If you have a lot of rain or snow, floors will

The good news is this task doesn’t need to be done often. Just make sure not to neglect it. You cook food in your oven, so make an effort to keep it clean. “In today’s environment where almost all the ovens are self-cleaning, it may be enough to clean it once per year,” Alt says.

NEAT TIPS Stay on top of your household chores with these tips: Keep things picked up. Make sure items are not on the floor and in the way. “This way, if a room needs to be cleaned, there’s not a lot of moving things around or putting things away before it gets cleaned,” Alt says. “You can get in there, get it cleaned, and be done.” Prevent scrubbing. One of the hardest parts of cleaning is when something is stained. Create the habit of wiping up spills immediately and rinsing dishes as soon as you’re finished. This will save you time when you finally get around to cleaning. Designate one day/afternoon/evening per week for cleaning. Choose a specific time every week to get caught up on your household chores. This way, you ensure you stay on top of those many tasks that should be completed regularly. Hire a professional. HOLIDAY CHEERS As we prepare for the winter holiday season, finding a way to bring a festive note to gatherings with family and friends is my way to communicate love, warmth, and hospitality. This could be as simple as updating holiday décor, creating a new dessert, or, better yet, sharing a new cocktail to mark the occasion. Since food is my jam, I reached out to the experts for help in the spirits department. He graciously created this cocktail for your winter celebrations, big and small!

BECAUSE I SAID SO ...

THE GHOST OF CHRISTMAS FUTURE

week? We’re stuck in the house like we’re living the Little House on the Prairie circa 1870. The weather went from winter wonderland to “when’s spring?!”

It’s not a secret that I write this column in advance.

What am I doing now? I keep stuffing my mom’s leftover homemade macaroni and cheese in my mouth. I didn’t even heat it up. I’m stabbing my fork in the gallon-sized Ziploc bag.

These words will leave my computer, be read, edited, re-read, and probably re-read again. The words will be placed “pretty-looking” by the art director. It will be whisked away in the air to a printer. It will be bundled, delivered, and now you’re reading these words. It’s not even Halloween. Yet, here we are. You’re in December. I’m in October. Enter the Ghost of Christmas Future. There I am, stuck in the house with my fighting daughters. Emma yanked Kate’s hair. Kate is sucking down a candy cane to a point. She’s getting ready to stab Emma. I’m staring at the wall. The gifts are open. There's no wrapping paper in sight. We must be in the black hole of the calendar — the days between Christmas and New Year’s. I don’t know what day it is, who I am, or what I’m supposed to be doing. I don’t know if stores are open. Does anyone even work this

“HEY! STOP THAT! YOU WILL REGRET PILING CARBS IN YOUR FACE! MAY IS COMING!” Future Julie can’t hear me. She’s crammed another bite in. She’s going to regret all of this. Where’s Scott? He’s in our bed, of course. He must be dying of whatever Tiny Tim had. Wait a minute, no he’s not. He has ESPN on and he’s scrolling through his phone. Screams are coming from the kitchen. Emma and Kate are yelling at the dog for jumping on the counter. The dog ate the rest of my cold macaroni and cheese. I’m sure Future Julie will be angry but at least someone took it away from her. Good. She was losing control of herself. Where is Future Julie anyway? It’s starting to snow. She must be … Yes. She’s turned on the lights to show the kids snow. She’s tweeting something.

“On Lezak, on Busby, on Amble, and Thompson. On Little, on Lauria, on Horner, and Anderson! To the top of the porch, to the top of the wall. Now, dash away, dash away, dash away all!" She shouldn’t tweet that. It’s not Christmas anymore. It’s not even that funny. The weather people? Really? What do the reindeer have to do with snow anyway? No one will get it ... aaaand she tweeted it. She sends the kids to bed and she crawls into bed with Scott. Scott’s still scrolling through his phone. She picks up the December issue of SIMPLYkc Magazine. October Julie, meet December Julie.

APP OF THE MONTH

A SIMPLE, FUN, FREE GAME (SERIOUSLY FREE) The gist: Whether you’re standing in a seemingly neverending return line, waiting for your holiday cookies to finish baking, hiding from

family, or simply just need a quick break from your hectic day, this game will keep you entertained for as long as necessary. Picross Luna is a surprisingly compelling and interesting puzzle game, yet simple to play. The object of a picross puzzle is to darken all the correct squares in the grid to reveal a hidden image. The numbers on the sides of each row and column represent continuous blocks of darkened cells. Each picture you reveal in Picross Luna is adorable and worth the work you put into it. You also can work on any puzzle and save your progress to pick up anytime, anywhere. This game is free — no freemium options here — for Android and iOS.

e l SELF-CARE IDEAS p m i s

1 Kickstart your day with grati-

tude. Start your day by thinking about the things you appreciate. This will help you to become more focused and balanced in your life.

4 F orgive yourself. Are you

holding on to anger? Perhaps you feel you should be further along in life. Take this chance to be more compassionate toward yourself. S ay aloud: “I’m sorry I’m so hard on you. I know you are doing the best you can.”

2 Define three or fewer daily

goals. This makes your goals achievable while allowing for normal “emergencies” that might pop up during the day

5 Make a list of things you love

3 G ive yourself permission to

take a break. There’s always something to be done, but sometimes, you must relax and mentally reset.

about yourself. Instead of letting insecurities get the best of you, be kind to yourself by listing the things you love, whether it’s a body party, intellect, ability, or something else. Do this often.

6 Create a “happy” playlist.

Listening to upbeat music will boost your mood. Put all your favorite artists on a playlist and dance it out.

7 Get out of your comfort zone. Order something new on the menu, take a different route home, call a friend you haven’t talked to in years. Follow your heart and see what happens when you do.

Emily Hart is a very special place. The atmosphere is exciting as soon as you walk in and see all the dresses! The quality, selection and prices were top notch. But nothing compared to the service I received at Emily Hart.Thank you ladies for a memorable day! -Kristen R.

A truly fun and special experience! There are so many varieties of dresses and they are all gorgeous! They can customize any and every part of the dress to make it perfect for you.The staff was so incredibly nice and helpful, it was like hanging out with friends! I absolutely loved it and whole-heartedly recommend it to everyone! -Lisa D.

Emily Hart was truly a blessing. I was so nervous about going to try on dresses. Loren is seriously the most wonderful person I have ever met. She made me feel so comfortable and took the time it needed for me to find my dress. Everyone there is so nice helpful and Emily herself is amazing and is creating my dress to be exactly what I have always dreamt of! I couldn’t be happier! -Brenna B.
