EDITOR’S NOTE

FEBRUARY: I LOVE YOU, I LOVE YOU NOT I have a love/hate relationship with the month of February. I do love that it is the shortest month of the year, and it is also one of the last winter months. On the other hand, February is often bitter cold and it seems to drag on forever. This year, I am going to try not to dwell on the things I dislike about the month, but try to make it a month to enjoy. Some people loathe Valentine’s Day. To me, it’s a great excuse to spread some love to those around you. I have found more joy in seeing the way my kids celebrate the holiday — there is nothing funnier than an elementary school love note! I’m hoping to come up with something creative for my husband and think outside the “box of chocolates.” If you are looking to create a memory in lieu of a gift, check out the great ideas for unique things to do with your sweetheart this Valentine’s Day on page 12. I am determined to give a little more love and less hate for the next 28 days. (It’s a little easier knowing that we’re one month closer to spring!)

CUPID AIMS FOR

Kansas City Some call Valentine’s Day a “Hallmark” holiday because of the demand for cards, chocolates, and flowers. And you know what? That’s fine with us, since Hallmark calls Kansas City home. We’ve gathered some of the best ways to celebrate Feb. 14 in the city of love. Just don’t forget to pick up a Hallmark card.

CEDAR CREST LODGE Pleasanton, Kansas cedarcrestlodge.com

Grab a blanket, a glass of wine, and a hand to hold as you sit next to a roaring fire and watch the sun set over the Kansas plains. Cedar Crest Lodge is located in Pleasanton, Kansas — a 45-minute drive south of Overland Park. It’s home to an award-winning bed and breakfast. Travel and Leisure magazine picked Cedar Crest Lodge as the “best romantic getaway” in Kansas. With 111 acres including walking trails and gardens, and a twocourse breakfast featuring produce grown on-site, Cedar Crest Lodge is easy on the eyes and the taste buds. During the month of February, Cedar Crest Lodge is giving $20 off the “A Little Romance” package. On Valen-

COMPOUND FITNESS

Overland Park, Kansas

compoundhealthandfitness.com Strong hearts are the best hearts to have on Valentine’s Day. Compound Fitness will get you and your partner’s heart racing. (There might be some sweating too.) Anthony and Rachel Giordono are husband-and-wife owners and fitness trainers of Compound Fitness. They understand the benefits of working out as a couple. “A couple that works out together forms a bond that carries past the gym,” Rachel Giordono says. “A healthy relationship is only strengthened when both individuals are working on the same goals.” Join Compound Fitness at 6 p.m. on Feb. 14 for a “Workout and Dinner Date Night.” This couples-only class incorporates different training styles and new techniques for you and your partner. After the hour-long class, you can enjoy a discounted dinner next door at Louie’s Wine Dive. Couples’ training packages start at $80 per couple. Ten-packs are avail-

able for $350. Call 913.815.2050 for details.

SWEET CAROLINE’S

Overland Park, Kansas 7723 W. 151st St.

A red, naturally heart-shaped fruit dipped in chocolate. It’s hard to believe the chocolate-covered strawberry has only been around since the 1960s. In a town as sweet as Kansas City, Sweet Caroline’s perfected the marriage between chocolate and strawberry. The small candy and fudge shop in Overland Park receives pre-orders starting in December for its infamous jumbo-sized chocolate-covered strawberries. There’s a good reason for the high demand — there is no icing or frosting used at the store. Everything is made from high-quality chocolate. And if your lover doesn’t dig strawberries, try a caramel- or chocolate-covered apple. Sweet Caroline’s strawberries can be pre-ordered in singles, half dozen, and a dozen. All orders come complete with cups, a tissue-lined box, and a bow. All treats at Sweet Caroline’s are for pickup only. Order by calling 913.495.9993.

Rick and Judy Raugewitz (back row), owners of Synergy Myofascial Therapy Center in Lee’s Summit, and Jan Kelly, owner of Midwest Myofascial Release Center in Overland Park, have teamed up to provide a range of expertise and offer team-based pain treatment programs.

LOCAL MIDWEST MYOFASCIAL RELEASE CENTER BRINGS RELIEF Tightness. Pain. Tension. All are feelings we understand from living our lives — whether it be from stress, an injury, or repeated motion — and Midwest Myofascial Release Center is expanding and bringing relief. “There’s this shift that happens. The pain goes away and range of motion increases,” says Jan Kelly, founder of Midwest Myofascial Release, located in Overland Park, and now, Lee’s Summit. “It’s about rebalancing the system and opening it up. It’s hard to describe; you really have to experience it.” Kelly, an occupational therapist and licensed massage therapist, has been performing myofascial release, or “MFR,” for the past 19 years. MFR focuses on the fascial system — a densely woven, spider web-like tissue structure that runs through the entire body, connecting muscles, bones, and organs. By applying pressure to fascial restrictions, MFR allows the fascial system to return to its normal pliable state, reducing pressure on other structures and alleviating pain.

“ We feel where the tension is. Just because your hip is hurting it doesn’t mean that’s where the problem is.” Kelly is currently teaming up and combining efforts with Rick Raugewitz, physical therapist, and Judy Raugewitz, licensed massage therapist, owners of Synergy Myofascial Therapy Center in Lee’s Summit. This will not only add a second convenient location in the

metro area but, including Midwest Myofascial Release Center’s Kris Hanson, brings the number of MFR therapists available to four. Importantly, this provides a capacity and range of expertise to enable services such as multisession and team-based intensive treatment programs.

the pain,” Meeker shares. She found out about Kelly and Midwest Myofascial Release Center through a friend and eventually went for a session. “I think in two sessions, Jan had it totally resolved,” Meeker says. “When you go to see her, whatever is wrong anywhere — and you might hurt in one part, but the problem might be another part of the body — she tracks it.”

All four therapists have trained extensively with That’s the magic of the Rick Raugewitz and Jan Kelly provide John F. Barnes, PT, myofascial release therapy on a patient. fascial system. Finally, every MFR session is centered “We get into the fascial system, we listen to the body, and we go when the body is ready and follow it then, as opposed to just forcing it,” Rick Raugewitz says. MFR is different than the traditional ways of dealing with pain and injuries, Kelly explains, and many of her patients come in because typical methods — such physical therapy, doctors, or chiropractic care — have failed to solve problems. The relief brought on from MFR is nearly instant, too. That’s exactly what happened with Cindy Meeker, a patient of who had multiple surgeries in 2007 that created a buildup of scar tissue in her lower abdomen and an immense amount of pain. “It got to the point where when I felt a sneeze coming, I would literally double over and be ready for

on the individual with hands-on, oneon-one care. Rather than complete a predetermined set of stretches or tests based on locations of pain, the specialists at Midwest Myofascial Release Center listen to your body and find where the tightness is, responding differently based on how your body reacts. Every session, the specialists listen and follow the fascia with every client, regardless of previous treatments. “I might have seen you 10 times, but you lived a lot of life between the last time you came in and now,” Kelly explains. “We have to see you from a fresh perspective.” If you are in pain, you’re tense, or you just feel off, myofascial release might help. KACIE HOW TO DEAL WITH DEFIANT IN-LAWS

I caught my mother in law spanking my child. I told her this is not how we discipline. She continues to do so. How do I get her to respect our wishes?

As a parent, your most important duty is keeping your child safe. And spanking — or hitting — your child is a form of punishment that you and your husband have decided is not OK. So, you must take action. If she continues to dismiss your rules, don’t let her have alone time with your child anymore. If she is your primary babysitter, you must find other child-care options. Your significant other should discuss this with his mother. He should tell her that while you both are grateful for her help, your rules are non-negotiable. He should explain the rules once again, what happens when rules are broken, and why you both have these boundaries in place. Tell her she will get only supervised visits with your child until you feel like you can trust her again. (But know it’s OK if you never get to that point.) Remember: Your child is your child and you have to stand up for him.

If you have any questions you’d like Kacie to answer, submit them to our managing editor at: ashley@simplykcmag.com.

And many women are wearing the wrong size bra, according to Ana Martinez Bishop, the manager at Clair De Lune in Leawood, Kansas.

TIPS FOR MEN Valentine’s Day is a popular time to gift lingerie. Martinez Bishop has some tips for men when shopping for your love. Know her style. If she’s sporty, don’t buy something all-sheer. Consider her lifestyle. If she has four young kids at home, she probably won’t be comfortable wearing a silky teddy around them. Come in knowing all her sizes, not just bra and underwear size. Know her height, weight, jean size,

shirt size, and dress size. A woman who wears a size 2 dress is not going to be wearing a 36C bra. If possible, ask her to start a wishlist or create a file at a lingerie store. It makes shopping for lingerie a breeze — and you won’t have to remember sizes. Don’t be intimidated by lingerie stores. Employees are trained to strike up a conversation to find the perfect gift.

Go for the trendy items. Trends in lingerie and sleepwear change every season. Right now, the trends are bralettes, strappy bras, and longline bras. Lounge wear and yoga wear is also popular — it’s sexy, but also “mother-in-law appropriate.” Don’t be afraid to get something for yourself too. Men’s underwear has changed throughout the years. A new brand to try is called Saxx, which features a sewn-in pouch to reduce friction.

ASCEND HOSPICE PROVIDES CARE AND COMFORT TO TERMINALLY ILL PATIENTS Finding out a loved one has been diagnosed with a terminal illness is a difficult time for everyone involved. However, there is a way to ease the pain and suffering of those affected by a terminal illness. Hospice care provides care and comfort, as well as companionship, to the terminally ill. Ascend Hospice provides a personalized and holistic approach to hospice care. The caregivers at Ascend provide individualized, attentive programs, services, and alternative therapies to help patients and their family members manage this difficult time. They seek to

ease or relieve a patient’s symptoms, while at the same time helping patients feel worthy of the comfort provided. Ascend has a variety of programs that focus on the specific needs of each individual. The health care professionals and volunteers at Ascend go above and beyond traditional health care by providing holistic therapies, including aromatherapy, massage therapy, Reiki, and pet therapy. Missouri native Joyce Angerman has seen the benefits of the care that Ascend provides firsthand. Her 94-yearold mother, Maxine Bell, lives with her and receives care from Ascend on a weekly basis. Bell receives care from two nurses, a massage therapist, and a nurse’s aide. Angerman says the employees at Ascend go above and beyond, even going so far as to take her mom to a Royals game in her wheelchair last spring.

The health care professionals and volunteers at Ascend Hospice go above and beyond traditional health care by providing holistic therapies, including aromatherapy, massage therapy, Reiki, and pet therapy. Angerman highly recommends Ascend Hospice to everyone. “The people who work for Ascend are angels,” Angerman says. “They couldn’t be any better or nicer. The ones who care for my mother — we just consider them

to be a part of our family. They are kind, considerate and caring to her, and they meet all of her needs as well as mine. My mother loves all of them, and she looks forward to their visit.” One of the unique aspects of Ascend Hospice is the massages. Hospice massage is a great way to offer solace to people at a very difficult time in their lives. Every week, Massage Therapist Kathy Finney visits about 10 to 15 people where they live, which could be their home, a family member’s home, an assisted living facility, a nursing home, or a memory-care facility for Alzheimer’s and dementia patients. She uses aromatherapy essential oils and quiet music to help calm patients during their massages. Finney says hospice massage provides many benefits to patients. “I think of a patient who told me that the sessions felt sacred to him,” she says. “He felt in those moments a natural easing of his tension, and a peacefulness came over his mind.” For those patients who can’t communicate, Finney says she notices

a reduction in their muscle rigidity, a relaxation of their facial muscles, and a slowing of their breathing. She says she has seen patients sit up straighter in their wheelchairs, interact with their families more, eat better, and reduce their pain medications. “It touches the whole person,” she explains. In addition to massage and aromatherapy, the caregivers at Ascend offer Reiki, a Japanese healing technique based on the principle that the therapist can channel energy into a patient by means of touch. This helps to activate natural healing processes and restore

physical and emotional well-being to patients. Pet therapy uses the natural bond between humans and animals to provide comfort, relaxation, and peace to terminally ill patients. The caregivers at Ascend also use pet therapy to help encourage movement, and to provide soothing companionship, empathy, socialization, and mental stimulation to patients. Ascend Hospice offers comprehensive care to meet the needs of their patients 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Ascend Hospice is located at 5750 W. 95th St. in Overland Park. I SAID SO...

SOMETHING SUBSTANTIAL Put your feet up. Grab some wine. This is story time at SIMPLYkc Magazine. Ok, you can let down your hair, too. That’s what I’m going to talk about. Hair. It’s my “something substantial,” my something of considerable size — the hair on my head. My hair and I have a pathetic history. My hair, for the majority of my life, was the cause of humiliation, groundings, a streak of playing wingman for my hot friends, and a disappointed husband. I am a child of the ’80s. I had bangs. This is not anything traumatic because everyone had bangs. One year, my hair one-upped everyone else. I had short hair in the front and long hair in the back. Together. I had a mullet. I hated it. In middle school, my friend bleached a chunk of hair on the back of my head. I wanted a blonde streak in the back when I pulled my hair up. It ended up looking like, “Peanut butter! She let her friend dye her hair and it looks like peanut butter smeared on the back of her head! I don’t know what to do with her, Tom! She can’t go to school like this!” my mom screamed over the phone. I hated it. Summer of 2000: I permed my hair before I left for college. I am the final person to get a perm in the history of perms and then I went to college. I was the wingman who smelled like rotten-egg perm hair at frat parties. I hated it. I chopped off my hair after our wedding, after I gave birth to my first-born, Emma, and again right before I gave birth to my second child, Kate. Even

though shorter hair is easier to care for, Scott fell out of love with me a little more each time. “You just look better with long hair.” I hated it. I prayed my daughters wouldn’t get my hair. They didn’t: Emma has curly hair with sun-kissed highlights (that I wish I had) and Kate has silky straight blonde hair (also that I wish I had.) I have ponytail holder-busting, thick hair. Clips don’t work. More than 90 bobby pins adorned my hair on my wedding day. Most hats are too small for my head thanks to the two inches of hair cushioning my scalp. I cringe at the word “volume” on any hair product. Men with receding hairlines stare at me with envy. Probably. And now the beast is framing my face with silver. When I pull my hair back, I glimpse grandma-me in the mirror. I chase Scott around the house and ask if he loves his future wife. His answer is always a horrified yes. Thirty-four years of bad hair has taught me that you don’t tame a beast. You accept what is yours. Bad hair is my own decision. I have a full head of hair that will never need help “volumizing.” I have hair that will curl and stay curled without hair spray. My hair is wild and untamed. It feeds on humidity. It only knows how to grow bigger. After years of self-loathing, maybe it taught me to grow, too. My hair is my “something substantial.” Just don’t ever let me get a perm again.

3 COMMON WINTER HEALTH MYTHS

Growing up, how often did an adult tell you, “Oh, you’d better bundle up if you’re going outside in this weather. You don’t want to catch a cold!” If your childhood was anything like mine, you heard that

Despite being called “the common cold,” these viruses actually have nothing to do with cold temperatures. It’s true that we do tend to get more colds

Time spent outdoors gives your body a break from indoor germs, helps reduce stress and increases oxygen and vitamin D levels in our bodies. My prescription for staying healthier through the winter: Step out of your warm, cozy home every once in a while! (And I do recommend wearing a coat.)

no fewer than 45 times a day all winter

colds is to spend more time outside.

sible times: right before a fun holiday party or during an important work

project or the day we’re supposed to leave for the big family ski trip. So we head to the doctor hoping for a quick fix. In our clinic, we see a lot of patients who have heard that early antibiotics will help prevent a cold from getting worse or help shorten symptoms to last only, say, three days instead of seven days. Not true, unfortunately. The fact is that most winter cold symptoms usually last five to 10 days regardless of treatment. Because colds are caused by viruses instead of by bacterial infections, antibiotics are not effective to treat them. The good news is there are some things you can do to help your body recover faster: Get lots of rest, drink lots of fluids, and, when needed, take over-the-counter medicine to help

treat bothersome symptoms like body aches, nasal congestion, or a persistent cough.

MYTH 3: ALLERGY SYMPTOMS GO AWAY IN THE WINTER Some people think that once all of the leaves have fallen and the first hard freeze has come and gone, all allergy problems magically disappear during cold months. Sadly, no. Actually, many studies have shown that indoor allergy symptoms actually increase during the winter. During cold weather, indoor air quality can worsen because pets spend more time inside, windows stay shut and mold thrives in lower temperatures. When I see patients who have a cough or stuffy nose that lingers beyond 10 to 14 days, I usually recommend an over-the-counter antihistamine. If this sounds like you, it could be time to talk with a primary care physician. Staying well in the winter can be a challenge for children and adults alike. Germ-sharing and the common cold and indoor allergies are all hard to avoid during these cold months. The good news is … Spring is right around the corner!

The Great Balancing Act There is no “right answer” for how to do it all. Most of us achieve a balance and accomplish what we need to through trial and error and constant re-prioritizing. There is no “right answer” for how to do it all. Most of us achieve a balance and accomplish what we need to through trial and error and constant re-prioritizing. Because I get my best ideas from sharing notes with other people, I wanted to know some of my friends’ secrets of success. And now I’m sharing with you! I chatted with several savvy, successful working moms — these ladies have challenging careers, active kids, and super-hectic lives — and they do it in style. Note to readers: I believe that working inside the home as a mom and running a household is challenging and important, but for this article I was specifically interested in how women strike a balance between

a career outside the home along with being a mom. (Let’s all support each other, ladies!) So, here is some insider advice from real metro-area moms for how they create balance and make it all work:

ACCEPT HELP

Almost everyone I spoke with mentioned that accepting help from others is a must, whether that includes carpools with friends to shuttle kids around or relying on help from family.

HOUSEKEEPING HELP Some of the moms I talked with mentioned that, if you can afford it, hiring a cleaning service can be helpful. “One of the best things we did is hire a cleaning lady,” says Kristen Worden, a clinical data

manager. “So much of our weekend was spent cleaning and not hanging out with family. I know that is not always an option for all, but we made it work.”

CHILDCARE With so many childcare options available, you can more easily decide what makes the most sense for your family’s schedule and your children’s ages. “Hiring a nanny versus doing after-school care has been a lifesaver,” says Cheryl Skram, a marketing executive. “It’s only a few extra dollars a day but has cut down on my stress tremendously, eliminating the time it takes to race out of work and pick kids up from two different schools. It also allows the kids to get home, unwind, do homework, and relax.” cont. on page 36

PLANNING AHEAD

Chalita Middleton, an assistant principal, has a great system for prepping each week’s meals — she makes grocery shopping and cooking her Sunday-afternoon ritual, cooking the main course for three weeknight dinners ahead of time to make for easy prep on busy nights. She also is a stickler for consistent routines and having everything in its place. Her sons know to look in the pantry each morning to find their lunch-making supplies. Other friends stress that having laundry done, the house picked up, carpools organized, and clothes laid out on Sundays make the week go much more smoothly.

CALENDARS

Attorney Kate McKinney says a shared Google calendar with her husband is important for staying on the same page. Middleton opts for white boards hanging on the wall for current and upcoming months. Either way, finding a good calendar system for your family will help keep everyone in the loop as to what is going on each day.

COMMUNICATION

Jenni Behymer, a marketing executive who was a stayat-home mom for several years, stresses the necessity of talking through the daily schedule with her husband. She believes this ritual has made them better communicators and has strengthened her husband’s relationship with their kids as he has become “Mr. Mom” when she travels or works late.

FAMILY TIME AND RELAXING TIME

Skram’s family makes a “beat the clock” game out of picking up the house and is mindful of carving out time for fun together so as not to let task lists take over their weekends. For example, they may decide to work on a house or yard project for a set period of time, but when the timer goes off, they turn their focus to doing something they all enjoy.

KEEPING IT IN PERSPECTIVE

Everyone I talked with mentioned they make a point of setting work aside and focusing on their kids as often as they can in the evenings, even if that means finishing a project after bedtime. My friends also stress that it’s healthy for their kids to understand they have commitments outside of their family life. “My kids are involved in a lot and I get to be around for much of it, but they also know there are times I can’t because I am committed to other responsibilities,” says Mandie Aadland, an event planner. “I want them to see there is some juggling in that, but also understand they are the priority.”

Alysa Cascio is not only the owner of Alysa Rene Boutique in Leawood but also the buyer for the boutique and a personal stylist.

ALYSA RENE BOUTIQUE You know it when you see it: the perfect pair of jeans. They’d look great dressed up with a silk blouse and heels, or dressed town with a T-shirt and sneakers. But, have you ever seen them on a hanger or on a shelf? Probably not. Jeans only become perfect when they’re the perfect fit for you. There’s color to consider, and the way the jeans fit through your waist, hips, and legs — not to mention the type of denim, brand, and so much more. Anyone who’s ever bought designer denim and then less expensive denim understands this. And that’s just jeans. When it comes to fashion and personal style, jeans are only the tip of the iceberg.

38

| SIMPLYKCMAG.COM

Enter: Alysa Cascio. Even as a child, fashion was her passion. Nothing excites Cascio as much as perfecting the details of a look. And she loves sharing her passion with others and helping women complete their own looks. Cascio is not only the owner of Alysa Rene Boutique in Leawood but also the buyer for the boutique and a personal stylist. She has hand-selected every piece of clothing in her store. “There are very few pieces of clothing in here that I haven’t tried on myself,” Cascio shares. “It’s important to me that I know exactly how they fit.” She emphasizes this last point because, she says, her clients are so important to her. Helping women feel good is the best part of her job. That’s why she travels to Dallas and to Las Vegas, to Chicago and New

York City to attend fashion markets to keep up with — or stay ahead of — the latest styles and trends. It’s also why she researches hundreds of brands to find not just the best ones, but brands that other stores don’t carry.

“ T here are very few pieces of clothing in my shop that I haven’t tried on myself. It’s very important to me that I know exactly how they fit.” And her clients appreciate Cascio’s dedication. “I had a personal shop-

per before [going to Alysa Rene], but now I primarily shop there,” says Becky Moore, a Lenexa resident. “She is amazing. She selects outfits she knows I’ll like and have them ready for me to try on. Plus, it’s just as fun to shop there — you can shop without the pressure.” Knowing the most she can about each brand and each piece of clothing she carries helps Cascio determine which brands and clothing each client will love. She says that with denim, for example,

it takes her only a minute to tell what’s going to look good on somebody, based on their shape, height, style, etc. — and, more importantly, what they’re going to like. Once establishing that a customer does want help selecting outfits (“I totally understand when someone wants to be left alone when they shop,” Cascio says), she asks them about their lifestyle, their preferred looks, and more. She also shops with them for a while. “A lot of women shop in workout gear, so you can’t learn much from what they’re wearing,” she explains. “You

have to pay attention to what they’re picking up and looking at.” The best shopping advice she has? “If you don’t love it, don’t buy it. If you don’t feel great in it, don’t buy it! You want to have a good time; you don’t want to be worrying about your clothes.” She also encourages women to step out of their comfort zone and try something different. Many times, women will leave the store buying something they never would have tried but ended up loving once they did. Clients will soon have a lot more to look at. This winter, Alysa Rene Boutique is moving two spots north in Park Place in Leawood and expanding about 600 square feet. GOOD TASTES

Written by Lindsay Weiss | Photos by Lindsay Weiss

SLOW COOKIN’ SOMETHING SPECIAL Beef stew. Pot roast. Chili. These are the some dishes I make in the slow cooker — over and over and over again. I have a feeling I’m not the only one. Recently, I participated in a “crock pot recipe exchange” and got almost two dozen recipes for — you guessed it — beef stew, pot roast, and chili. There’s nothing wrong with the tried and true, but I was craving some fresh additions to my slow-cooker repertoire. Recently, I spent a month tinkering with slow-cooker recipes and came up with three that were just as easy as the old stand-bys, but had updated flavor profiles, easy-to-find ingredients, and, most of all — my kids’ seal of approval. (I also came up with some real duds — hint: mac and cheese in the crock pot never turns out well.)

Crock Pot Honey Sesame Chicken Serves: 4

Ingredients

Directions

1-1/4 p ound boneless, skinless chicken breasts (thighs would be fine too)

Season both sides of chicken lightly with salt and pepper, put into crock pot. In a small bowl, combine honey, soy sauce, onion, ketchup, oil, garlic and pepper flakes. Pour over chicken. Cook on low for 3 to 4 hours or on high for 1 ½ to 2 1/2 hours, or just until chicken is cooked through.

Salt and pepper 1/2 cup honey 1/4 cup soy sauce 2 tablespoons diced onion 2 tablespoons ketchup 1 tablespoon canola oil 1 clove garlic, minced 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional) 2 teaspoons cornstarch dissolved in 3 tablespoons water Sesame seeds

42

| SIMPLYKCMAG.COM

Remove chicken from crock pot, leave sauce. Dissolve 2 teaspoons of cornstarch in 3 tablespoons of water and pour into crock pot. Stir to combine with sauce. Replace lid and cook sauce on high for 10 more minutes or until slightly thickened. Cut chicken into bite-size pieces, then return to pot and toss with sauce before serving. Sprinkle with sesame seeds and serve over rice or noodles.

Crock Pot Pasta Fagioli Soup Serves: 10

You absolutely can add meat to this. Just substitute a can of beans for about 3/4 pound of browned ground beef or turkey. I buy lower sodium beans, tomatoes, and broth and add more salt as needed.

Ingredients

Directions

1 small yellow onion, chopped

Use a 6-quart or larger crockpot or cut the recipe in half. This serves 8–10 people with hearty bowls.

1 cup carrots, sliced about 1/4 thick 2 celery stalks, sliced about 1/4 thick 1 teaspoon minced garlic 1 can (16 oz) kidney beans, drained and rinsed 1 can (16 oz.) pinto peans, drained and rinsed 1c an (16 oz.) white Great Northern beans, drained & rinsed 2 cans (14.5 oz) diced tomatoes (and juice) 1 jar (26-ounce) pasta sauce 4 t o 6 cups of beef broth (start with 4; add more at the end if you like a thinner soup) 2 teaspoons dried oregano 1 teaspoon Tabasco sauce

Chop up the onion, carrots, and celery. Add it to the empty crockpot. Add garlic. Drain and rinse the beans, and add them. Add the whole cans of tomatoes (with juices), and the pasta sauce. Add the beef broth and then the oregano, Tabasco sauce, garlic salt, and pepper. Cover and cook on low for 5 hours, or high for 3. When the vegetables are tender, stir in the 2/3 cup of dry pasta. Cover and cook for another 30 min to 1 hour on low, or until the pasta is tender. It will swell quite a bit. If you like your soup thinner, add more broth before serving. Serve with a bit of parmesan cheese sprinkled on top.

1/2 teaspoon garlic salt, more to taste 1/4 teaspoon black pepper 2/3 cup dry elbow pasta, to add at end of cooking time

CHILD’S POSE: THE BENEFITS OF YOGA AND MEDITATION FOR KIDS

Many, if not most, people are aware of at least some of the benefits yoga offers. Perhaps fewer know of the positive outcomes gained through the practice of mindfulness, and even fewer know that children who practice yoga and mindfulness may benefit even more than adults. Dr. Tracy L. Daniel, who has more than 15 years of experience as a psychologist, explains that kids have more neuroplasticity than adults; therefore, teaching children yoga and mindfulness at an early age has an increased impact on their physical, mental, and emotional growth. She explains that integrating basic neuroscience and sensory input with yoga and mindfulness in a fun, playful manner is “therapeutic and beneficial to their growing bodies and their amazing changing brains.” Daniel doesn’t believe there is a “right age” to start. “Yoga and mindfulness are beneficial to children of all ages,” she says. “It just looks different depending on their developmental level and age.” Research demonstrates that children who practice mindfulness experience benefits such as increased attention, increased executive functioning (that is,

working memory, planning, organization, and impulse control), decreased ADHD behaviors (specifically hyperactivity and impulsivity), fewer conduct and anger problems, decreased depression and anxiety, and increased self-esteem and quality of sleep. (Adults will receive the same benefits, she says, but to a lesser degree since their brains are not building as many neural connections.) Owner and founder of Mindful Child Wellness, Daniel also worked as the early childhood special education coordinator and psychologist in Spring Hill for five years. A long-time marathoner, Daniel first turned to yoga as an alternative to the steroid injections recommendation by medical doctors when she developed knee trouble. When her experience with hot yoga alleviated her knee problems and enabled her to continue running, she got the idea to try yoga with the kids she

worked with. She became a trained yoga professional, certified in both Hatha and Kundalini yoga, and decided to open her own practice. Daniel typically works with children from birth to 21 years of age who have special needs as well as children who are dealing with stress and unable to regulate their emotions. She started applying yoga principles to teach self-regulation.”Teaching these kids yoga and mindfulness gives them a life-long coping mechanism that is easily accessible,” she says. Jamie Davis is a reading specialist in Platte City whose students struggle with issues such as attention, anxiety, and stress. She says she’s always had a personal interest in yoga and meditation, and was looking for ways to support her students at school. In 2015, Davis became acquainted with Daniel who, at the time, was completing some psychological contract work for the Platte City School District. This past November, Davis took part in Daniel’s 20-hour children’s yoga teacher certification program. The course provides instruction for teaching infants to teens the basic poses, breathing techniques, and mindfulness practices and movements to reduce tension and stress. Program participants learn how to structure and sequence classes for different age groups and levels of development as well as how to modify poses for kids with special needs.

The magic begins..

before her first breath.

Davis learned how to incorporate yoga into the reading of a story, part of a therapeutic approach known as bibliotherapy. Incorporating yoga with reading and storytelling helps students focus on the story and interact with the text, making it more meaningful and improving their comprehension. Like Daniel, Davis believes that all children can benefit from yoga and mindfulness practice. She teaches her students a simple breathing technique to relax and says she has seen them do this breath on their own before they start to learn. Additionally, she notes her students are more calm after they do breath work and some yoga poses. Not only has yoga and mindfulness practice impacted her students in a positive way, Davis has found her personal practice of yoga and mindfulness enables her to better handle stressful situations as well as her students when they are having a difficult time. “I’ve also incorporated meditation with teachers,” she shares. “We take the last 10 to 15 minutes of an exercise class to meditate and relax. Not only do the teachers find this enjoyable, but they’re more relaxed when they go home.”

THE SPA AT BRIARCLIFF The Spa at Briarcliff combines the art of relaxing with well-being. Massage therapy is popular here, but it’s the float room that makes The Spa at Briarcliff unique. The float room features a shallow pool of saltwater, which creates a weightless “float.” With any service, you receive access to the European bath ritual room one hour before and after.
