PUBLISHER’S NOTE

WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT TEEN SUICIDE As a mother of middle- and high-school students, the recent teen suicides in area school districts is a sobering issue. It shows us that no city is immune from suicide.

I encourage you to read the full article on Mayo Clinic’s website (mayocl.in/2rZ3E4E). Also check out our article on page 38 about teen suicide warning signs.

We can’t ignore the issue. We can’t think that talking about it will cause more suicides. We can’t fail our children anymore.

And, if you don’t think your kid is comfortable talking with you, make sure the Crisis Text Line (741-741) is posted on your fridge and saved in your kid’s phone. This text line provides free 24/7 support and information in any type of crisis — from emotional distress to suicidal thoughts.

I really appreciate this video (bit.ly/1Qx6LAW) created by Mayo Clinic. In it, teens describe common signs exhibited by someone considering suicide and suggest what to say to someone who may be at risk for suicide. Some highlights? • Address depression or anxiety. Don’t wait for your teen to come to you. If he appears to be struggling, lend a sympathetic ear, ask how you can help, and work together to get through it. • Pay close attention. If your child’s considering suicide, watch for warning signs. Listen to what she’s saying and how she’s acting. Never brush off threats of suicide as “teen drama.” • Discourage isolation. Write down a list of five people your teen can turn to for support. Also encourage him to spend time with supportive friends and family and participate in activities that will help rebuild confidence. • Safely store firearms, alcohol, and meds. Access to means can play a role if she’s already suicidal.

8

| SIMPLYKCMAG.COM

Remember: Teens are impulsive. They make decisions without fully considering the consequences. Make sure your kid knows suicide doesn’t solve anything.

WHAT, WHERE Meet Jenny Wheat Who: What:

Where:

JENNY WHEAT OF WHEAT PHOTOGRAPHY Wheat is a self-taught photographer who has built up a business over 10 years, and now exclusively works on commercial projects with some of KC’s best companies and clients. Wheat Photography is known for its lifestyle photography; fashion, food, and beverage projects for local chefs; and headshots for corporate clients and actors, models, and musicians. Her team takes a lighthearted, collaborative approach to work, and loves when clients become friends.

FAVORITE PLACE TO EAT IN KC There are so many talented chefs in Kansas City who are creating a nationally famous food scene. When we photograph food, we are so lucky to work with many of them. But for personal dining, I’m the most casual person in the world. I try to go vegetarian/pescatarian whenever I can, so I rarely go anywhere with a dressy or super high-end vibe! I love Port Fonda, Taco Republic, Vietnam Cafe, Lulu’s Noodle Shop, EJ’s Urban Eatery, Happy Gillis, and Westside Local. Those are all such low-key, casual, cozy spots but with local chefs doing amazing food.

FAVORITE DRINK IN KC Oh, I love to drink … coffee! There are lots of great coffee spots in the Crossroads: Thou Mayest, Mildred’s, The Roasterie, Messenger. I’m an odd one for other drinks because I don’t like wine, beer, or whiskey! What! Casual bars with great vodka cocktails and creative mixologists are my favorites. I love the bar staff at Extra Virgin and the cozy bar at Lidia’s. Port Fonda for margaritas. There are many other beautiful bars with top-level cocktails and killer whiskey in Kansas City — Monarch, The Rieger, Corvino, Manifesto, and more.

FAVORITE PLACE TO SHOP IN KC I try to live a life of minimalism with as few possessions as possible, so I rarely shop or buy things. I’d love for anyone interested to watch the documentary “Minimalism: A Documentary About the Important Things.” I do like to go to events and concerts, travel to foreign countries, and live more for experiences than possessions. For furniture, though, I love repurposed items from the West Bottoms vintage shops. And for vegetables, the River Market.

FAVORITE HIDDEN GEMS IN KC I hear from people living out South, or in Lee’s Summit, Independence, Western Shawnee, or north of the river who don’t often make it down to the Crossroads, the River Market, the Westside, the East Crossroads, or the areas just south of downtown. There are so many amazing locally owned restaurants, bars, art galleries, and shops in those areas! The suburbs are great — I live in Mission — but the heart of the city for me is the place to be.

FAVORITE PLACES TO TAKE OUT-OF-TOWN GUESTS I take all my guests to spots they can’t visit in their own cities. Local shops like Westside Storey, Crossroads art galleries like Blue Gallery, and restaurants where the chef will come sit with us for a minute and chat — like Extra Virgin.

Christy and Chris Bradford are owners of both KC Wholesale Carpet and Area Rug Dimensions, located in Overland Park.

KC WHOLESALE CARPET AND AREA RUG DIMENSIONS: THE FOOTPRINT OF YOUR HOME

18

| SIMPLYKCMAG.COM

“There’s no place like home.” If you grew up in Kansas City, you’ve probably heard the famous “The Wizard of Oz” quote a time or two. There is no place like home — Kansas City. And if you own a house here, then you know what a pair of ruby slippers, a little black dog, and several rambunctious “friends” can do to floors. The floors, quite literally, hold the footprints of your home. Muddy footprints from the kids, paw prints, handprints, pet fur, maybe even spa-

ghetti may end up on the floor. And, of course, your floors catch them all. Chris Bradford is the owner of both KC Wholesale Carpet and Area Rug Dimensions, located at 127th and Metcalf in Overland Park. He makes installing your floors easy. Plus, there are no hidden costs. Whether you’re a novice home designer or you’re hoping to design your own rug, KC Wholesale Carpet and Area Rug Dimensions will help you with your home’s many footprints.

The best part? “We give everyone ‘builder prices,’” Bradford says. “Our prices are as cheap as they can be every day. If you get at least three bids, we will be the wholesale price.” KC Wholesale Carpet features a wide selection of carpet flooring, real hardwood, engineered hardwood, and luxury vinyl wood floors. For those who prefer DIY projects, all flooring can be purchased at carry-out wholesale prices.

“We give everyone ‘builder prices’. Our prices are as cheap as they can be every day. If you get at least three bids, we will be the wholesale price.”

But the DIY trend isn’t for everyone. KC Wholesale Carpet offers you full service, including an in-home floor measure, lifetime warranty, and carpet pads. They also move your furniture, haul away and recycle your old carpet, vacuum, and arrange your furniture exactly how you want it. You don’t need to do a thing. Bradford’s creativity and experience — 19 years, to be exact — ensure he can help you with your interior design goals. And if you’ve been perusing photos from Houzz or Pinterest, he encourages you to bring them in. “When someone shows me photos of interiors they like, I can always find the consistency with a customer’s favorite looks,” he says. “I take that knowledge, view the home, and know exactly what to recommend, whether it’s new carpet or a rug. My gratification comes from finding the finished product my client will love.” The Area Rug Dimensions showroom

offers a variety of rugs to choose from — but you’re not limited to what’s on display. If you have the eye for design, you can create your own rug and even choose custom dyes. As with the flooring side, an in-home consultation is included. With his many years of experience, Bradford certainly knows the secrets to choosing the right flooring. Here’s what he shared with us: Decide how long you want your flooring to last. If there’s a better than 50% chance of never leaving your home, you should put down nice carpet. But thicker doesn’t necessarily mean nicer. Thinner, tighter, and denser carpet is best for wear, durability, and being maintenance-free. Vacuum often and you won’t have to clean it much. If you have kids and pets, you should be vacuuming more than once a week. But because it’s sometimes difficult to vacuum that often, Bradford recommends a tighter, denser carpet. Apply a protectant once or twice a year. After vacuuming, spray ScotchGuard or ForceField on it. Upgrade flooring in the spring or fall. If it’s nice enough to have your windows open, it’s also the best time to install flooring. Temperate weather helps new flooring better acclimate to the climate. Install multitonal carpets to hide stains and debris. Patterns and textures are trending, but the No. 1-selling color is griege, a mix of beige and grey. It blends well with almost any decor. Remember there’s no place like home. And there’s no better place to shop for flooring in Kansas City than KC Wholesale Carpet and Area Rug Dimensions. The KC Wholesale Carpet and Area Rug Dimensions showrooms are located at 12623 Metcalf Ave. Find the businesses at kcwholesalecarpetstores.com, arearugdimensions.com, facebook.com/ kcwholesalecarpet, or facebook.com/ arearugdimensions.

How do I get my boyfriend to get off his phone at mealtime and be more

HOW TO DISCUSS PHONE BOUNDARIES WITH A LOVED ONE

attentive to me? This is an ongoing fight and I am so tired of it.

In a world of technology and social media, this has now become a common thing couples fight about. Sometimes it seems as if people are more focused on keeping up with other people’s lives than their own. Being present and mindful of your partner is important. You say you’ve already been talking (or fighting) about this, so he must know it’s an issue. You might consider trying a different approach. Try not to criticize. (“You never pay attention to me.”) Instead, use “I” statements like, “I feel hurt when you spend most of your time on your phone when we are spending quality time together.” Then ask if he’d be open to certain phone-free times such as during meals, dates, in the bedroom after a certain hour, etc. It’s important to learn how to unplug and focus on what is in front of you.

If you have any questions you’d like Kacie to answer, submit them to our managing editor at: ashley@simplykcmag.com.

Having a team of experienced wellness practitioners working together on your side can help open your eyes to what’s been ailing you, put you on the right path to healing, and provide the support you need along the way. That’s what the team at Midwest Myofascial Release Center in Overland Park has been providing for the KC community for more than 15 years. Jan Kelly opened the center with the intention of bringing every person who stepped through the doors into harmony with life, giving them a chance to explore the inherent wisdom between the body, mind, spirit, and emotions. She does this by creating a unique, comprehensive program for each client.

LET GO AND RETURN TO HEALTH AT MIDWEST MYOFASCIAL RELEASE CENTER When it comes to healing, there’s a strong desire in all of us to find that magic pill we can take to make everything better. But healing is a process that involves our participation — and usually a lot of patience.

28

| SIMPLYKCMAG.COM

Kelly uses the John Barnes Myofascial Release technique. Myofascial release (MFR) involves applying gentle, sustained pressure on knots, which puts pressure on pain-sensitive areas in your myofascial connective tissue to eliminate pain and restore motion. Trauma, inflammatory responses, and surgical procedures create these knots and often are undetectable by X-rays and other tests. The gentle pressure applied slowly through MR allows the fascia to elongate and heal, improving circulation to your muscles, reducing pain, and increasing mobility. The importance of keeping fascia healthy can’t be overestimated: This connective tissue spreads throughout your body in a threadlike web from head to toe. A client’s independence through education is also part of the MR method, including instruction in proper body mechanics and movement, self-treatment, strength and flexibility building,

and postural awareness, and how to heal emotionally and spiritually. Laura Christine came to MMRC with an autoimmune condition. Nothing she had tried was offering lasting results. But MFR provided immediate results, and she remains on a maintenance program. “I’ve been pain-free for years. I got rid of fibromyalgia through myofascial release combined with changes to my diet,” Christine says. “Really, I got better when I started dealing with my ‘junk.’ And that’s what’s great about MR; it helps people release the emotional component too.” She was so impressed with the technique and with what she learned that she later joined the team as the detox program coordinator. Christine’s issue is just one example of how collaborative modalities hold the key to a patient’s return to health and well-being. Other techniques at the center include therapeutic massage,

movement therapy, energy healing arts, Reiki, Akashic Record healing, counseling, and detoxification programs that include far infrared sauna therapy.

“Our bodies are guarding against so much. This doesn’t have to be the case. There is a more relaxed, healthy way of living. We just have to retrain our brain to let go.” LaShonda Brown is a BodyTalk practitioner at the center. This technique acknowledges the profound influence of your psychology on the body and addresses the whole person, including all aspects of the human psyche: emo-

tional, physical, and environmental. “I look for what’s going on with a person, and work on improving communication between all systems of the body,” Brown says. “Someone might come in with knee pain, but the cause could be unknown to her. It’s like peeling back an onion.” A movement therapist at MMRC, Sarah Breedlove, also guides her clients to make a connection between mind and body. She often finds that most wellness goals are attainable when people become aware of and release limiting beliefs. “This works for people when so many other methods have failed,” Breedlove says. “Our health and the way we move is always changing. It’s a balancing act that never achieves perfect balance. I teach my clients how to listen to their bodies and move better so they can do the things they want to do.” Angelica Bustamante, a therapist at MMRC, uses an example of being in a car accident: Those involved are swept up at the moment — looking for injuries, calling the police, etc. The physical and emotional trauma isn’t always addressed. The same applies to injuries, physical or emotional abuse, or even falling off a swing as a kid. “Our bodies are guarding against so much,” Bustamante explains. “This doesn’t have to be the case. There is a more relaxed, healthy way of living. We just have to retrain our brain to let go.” Midwest Myofascial Release Center is located at 7270 W. 98th Terrace, Suite 220, in Overland Park. Call 913.706.2294 or visit midwestmyofascialrelease.com for more information.

The comfortable, relaxing treatment rooms at Midwest Myofascial Release Center help ensure you achieve a higher sense of inner peace.

BEAUTY

Written by Deborah Eakin Osborne

CUSTOMIZE YOUR CLOSET THROUGH CLOTHING RENTAL Closet full of clothes and nothing to wear? Want to update your wardrobe without spending a fortune? Hate to go shopping? (OK, I did not just ask that.) If you can relate to any or all of the above, clothing rental just might be the fix for your sitch. Clothing rental subscriptions are gaining popularity for a number of reasons. First of all, who doesn’t love to get packages? Secondly, a wardrobe shared among subscribers (rather than each one having their own closet full of clothes 24/7) means fewer pieces will end up unworn in the back of closets or, worse yet, in landfills. Clothing rental decreases the stress of shopping and increases your ability to experiment with styles you might not otherwise try, knowing you can send something back if it doesn’t suit you. What’s not to like? Most clothing rental subscription services include one or more types of plans with differing price points and options (e.g., monthly or quarterly), each with a specific number of items per shipment that can be obtained and retained for a specific or indefinite length of time. Subscribers can keep or return some or all of the items in exchange for new pieces, and items purchased are available at discounted rates. Shipping is usually free, and dry cleaning is provided by the company upon return. (Of course, for specific details on a particular company or plan, please refer to the company’s website.) Here are just three options in a sea of many:

RENT THE RUNWAY (renttherunway.com) features designer clothing in sizes 0 to 22, as well as

32

| SIMPLYKCMAG.COM

accessories such as jewelry and handbags. Plans range from $30 for a single piece four- or eight-day rental to $159 per month for an unlimited, constantly rotating wardrobe. Last fall, Rent the Runway introduced a new lower-priced tier that includes four pieces you keep for a month before exchanging. Subscribers to GWYNNIE BEE (closet.gwynniebee.com) pay a flat monthly fee that allows them to access women’s clothing in sizes 0 to 32. With a Gwynnie Bee subscription, you can wear the item — or items — as many times as you want before returning. Or, if you love a piece, you have the option of purchasing it at a discount.

Photo courtesty of Qwynnie Bee

While most brands and retailers begin with traditional sizes and extend into plus, Gwynnie Bee started by serving the 80% of American women who wear size 10 and above, and just recently expanded its clothing line to include sizes 0 to 8. “We are doing what no brand has done before by taking a disruptive approach to size inclusiveness,” says Jessica Dvorett, vice president of merchandising, in a recent press release. “Our starting point and

focus has and always will be our core members who are sizes 10-32, but our point of view is that in order to be truly inclusive, we cannot be exclusive.” Gwynnie Bee carries brands such as Modcloth, EShakti, BB Dakota, Jessica Howard, Jones New York, Karen Kane, Melissa McCarthy Seven7, and more.

STITCH FIX (stitchfix.com) is a personal styling service that initially focused on women, but has since expanded to men’s clothing, plus sizes, and maternity wear. You complete an online “style profile,” which a personal stylist uses to choose five items for you. Once received, you have three days to decide whether to keep or return the items in the shipment, which is called a “fix.” A $20 styling fee is charged for each shipment, which is applied toward the purchase of any item you decide to keep. You also can choose how frequently you wish to receive shipments. Thanh Koontz, 27, of Overland Park wanted to try clothing rental for the convenience and originality it offered. She decided to go with Stitch Fix and says she always receives great-quality pieces, all delivered to her doorstep. “The clothes in Stitch Fix can only be found through them,” she says. “You won’t find them in stores. That’s a great perk, too!” Koontz appreciates that Stitch Fix offers petite sizing. She also feels a connection with her stylist: “When I give my stylist feedback on what I like and don’t like, she responds to me as if we are just friends chatting.”

Photo courtesty of Stitch Fix

Photo courtesty of Stitch Fix

Jerrett Domling, 43, of Overland Park says his wife, who has used Stitch Fix for years, signed him up and even pays for his purchases so she won’t have to go shopping with him. “She even sends back the stuff I don’t like,” he adds.

The ease of the service is what Domling likes most. He receives new pieces quarterly. “My stylist has done an excellent job of picking things that I’ll actually wear,” he explains. “The shirts are high-quality and they have my size dialed in.”

Domling recommends you start out with a quarterly subscription to test out the service. Happy shopping!

BULLEIGH ORTHODONTICS GIVES PATIENTS ENDLESS REASONS TO SMILE Chad Bulleigh, DDS, is the quintessential problem solver when it comes to your teeth. He really knows how to straighten things out. Along with his friendly staff, all of whom have appreciable experience in the industry, Dr. Bulleigh’s priority, he says, is to professionally address patients’ orthodontic needs while simultaneously making the process comfortable, relaxing, and, yes, even fun. Dr. Bulleigh, an active member of numerous professional organizations, opened his Shawnee practice in 2005, and since then has opened two more

The Bulleigh Orthodontics team continually strives to provide the best in overall service, with complete patient safety, health, and satisfaction in mind. “Most of the patients who come to us are referrals from other patients,” says Ashley Duxbury, orthodontic assistant and marketing specialist for the practice. “We pride ourselves on making patients feel welcome and like family, and we believe they sense that feeling.” Once you cross the threshold into any of the Bulleigh Orthodontics offices, you will quickly notice that emphasis on friendly, warm, and inviting. BRECK HATCHER OF YAYA’S EUROPEAN BISTRO things in his world: family, work ethic, and spaghetti with meat sauce. What’s your favorite thing about working at Yaya’s? The business. We are constantly busy and every day is different. Tastings, caterings, banquets, offsite events. On a Friday night, I could have a normal Yaya’s service, a 200-person event at the convention center, and a 100-person delivery at someone’s house — all different menus, all different types of food. It makes me broaden my skill set because I have to know all food, not just European Bistro. It keeps me on my toes. Chef Breck Hatcher, Yaya’s European Bistro

What do you do when you have a full-ride biology scholarship to the University of Arkansas but you can’t stand sitting at a desk for hours on end? Well, if you’re Breck Hatcher, you move back to where you grew up, enroll in the culinary program at Johnson County Community College, and you get to work. On his one-year anniversary of being the executive chef of Yaya’s European Bistro, we sat down to chat about the most important

36

| SIMPLYKCMAG.COM

What would you be doing if you weren’t doing this? I’ll tell you that my dream job since I was a tiny little kid was to be an NBA basketball player. I think if given the opportunity, I would seriously consider being a basketball player. But obviously, that’s just a dream. Being a chef, you can only go so far as you take yourself. We work with our hands, we work hard, we work a lot of hours. It’s not necessarily the most grace-giving job. You don’t get as much credit as you maybe think you deserve, but that’s not what it’s about. It’s about doing what you love. The harder you work, the more that you put of yourself in your food, the more you put of yourself in your job, the higher you’re going. You don’t need a degree, you don’t need to have graduated high school, you don’t need anything other than work ethic. I found it early. When I was 19 I realized this is what I loved to do and I just so happen to make money doing it. It’s pretty great. Growing up, what was your favorite meal and who cooked it? Well, that’s a tie between my mother and my grandmother, and it’s the same dish. My grandmother’s famous spaghetti with meat sauce. It’s my

favorite dish of all time; actually I just had some last night. That’s kind of the defining meal of my childhood. Do you know how to make it perfectly? I do. Well, there’s a debate because I’m a chef and my girlfriend now knows how to make it the way my mom makes it, who learned from my grandmother. There’s the classic chef mom in the kitchen, making it her way, and then there’s my way with more ingredients. I may obsess over it a little more, but nothing tastes better than mom’s. Always. What is an indispensable tool in the kitchen? Pair of tongs, a rubber spatula, a fish spatula and spoons, and I can do anything. What’s the difference between a rubber spatula and a fish spatula? A rubber spatula is basically for things like omelets or scraping containers. A fish spatula is a thin metal spatula that is biased on one side so I can get under the skin side of fish and flip it over. That way, it doesn’t tear or break. I sell a ton of fish, and to guarantee that all my fish is perfect I use “fish spats.” Do you have a guilty-pleasure food? I consume maybe half my body weight a week in Kit Kats — it’s kind of a mild obsession. I basically rip the package open like it’s a Christmas present and shove the whole thing in my mouth. What do you think the best thing about KC is? From a personal standpoint, especially where I am at with my life now, I feel like Kansas City is a very stable environment. There are things for anybody in any walk of life to do and to experience. I’m on the brink of having kids and getting married, so with the Blue Valley school district being so amazing, we’re right where we want to be. I think it’s one of the best places in the country to raise kids.

BECAUSE I SAID SO ...

Written by Julie Burton | Photo by Samantha Levi

AND THAT’S HOW I MET THE MOTHER OF THE BRIDE Weddings are always fun. No, I take that back. Weddings are always interesting. The wedding day is the day when two people become one. But there are not only two people at the altar. Oh no. They say when you marry someone, you’re marrying their family, too. Two families, whether they like each other or not, will forever be intertwined in the name of in-law. A wedding is the blending of two families. But first comes the rehearsal dinner. With this particular wedding, the groom’s family hails from middle America. The bride’s from Russia.

hood clubhouse. It’s so nice to finally meet you! Mother of the bride: Oh. Yes. Hello. I need, um, some vot-ka. Me: Vodka? MoB: Yes, Vot-ka.

The mother of the bride sat on the bride’s side, of course. She sat as far away from me as she could. Cousin Julie. Cousin-in-law Julie, of no blood relation to her newest son-in-law. The rehearsal dinner was going well until the mother of the bride walked up to me with a cup. Me: Hi! Are you the mother of the bride? I’m Julie. This is my neighbor-

Me: Welcome to the party! There’s the Russian I’m judging you to be. MoB: Mm. Yes. The mother of the bride gave me a side-eye because I was the American she was judging me to be. I walked to the back of the bar. I pointed to

the mother of the bride’s back and mouthed, “She wants vodka!” to the Burton family. I fist-pumped the groom’s cousins. Me: Well, we have wine here. And I made a champagne bar here. There’s beer outside in the coolers.

I mean, I always like to try local things when I’m visiting other towns. Do you want to go back and grab some? Do you have a Russian vodka you really like?

Kathy: Do you want some water?

The mother of the bride pointed to the sink.

Kathy: Here is some water. And I would like you to meet my lovely daughter-inlaw, Julie.

MoB: Yes! VOT-KA! Me: I swear she’s saying vodka.

MoB: VOT. KA. MoB: No, no, no. Vot-ka! Me: Oh! I was told no hard liquor by your daughter but I can get you some vodka. I won’t say anything.

I stared at her. Vodka. Vodka. What does she want? My mother-in-law walked up.

MoB: VOT-KA.

Me: I think she wants a vodka.

Me: You want the good stuff? I have some Tito’s in the back, I think. Or I can take you to my house where we have Tito’s. Kansas City has a few good local vodkas. I have those at the house too.

MoB: VOTKA.

OLD-SCHOOL VALUES PROVIDE STRONG FOUNDATION FOR PUBLIC RELATIONS FIRM Farm life can be tough. A crop’s schedule dictates pretty much everything. For Jenny Kincaid Julian, owner of Socialworx Public Relations, growing up in a farming family is the reason why she values hard work and the collapse-into-your-pillow exhaustion that comes from a day well-lived.

GOOD TASTES

Written by Gina Reardon | Photo by Melanie McDowell

When Life Hands You Lemons ... By the time March rolls around, we are SO READY for more sunny days, less rain, and certainly, an end to snow and ice. Lemons remind me of sunshine. Their bright, sunny flesh never fails to cheer me, and their tart zest and juice brightens both savory and sweet dishes. Sometimes just a hint of lemon will do the trick. Other times you want that full-on lemon flavor. I love lemon in most of its forms — just not in my water! One of my favorite breakfast and/or coffee treats is a delicious scone. These lemon-cherry scones are an adaptation of my favorite orange-cranberry scone, with the perfect texture. They’re not too dry, not too cake-like, but just right and sure to brighten your day!

Lemon Cherry Scones Yield: 8 large or 12 medium scones

INGREDIENTS 3 cups all-purpose flour 1/3 cup sugar 2-1/2 teaspoons baking powder 1 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon baking soda 1 tablespoon grated lemon peel 3/4 cup chilled unsalted butter, cut into 1/2-inch pieces 3/4 cup to 1 cup dried tart cherries 1 cup chilled buttermilk (plus additional for brushing tops) Coarse sugar for decoration

DIRECTIONS Preheat your oven to 400 degrees. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Sift the flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, and baking soda into a large bowl. Mix in the lemon zest. Add the butter by rubbing it in with your fingertips or using a pastry blender until the mixture resembles coarse meal. Mix in the dried cherries. Gradually add the buttermilk, tossing it with a fork until moist clumps form. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured work surface. Knead briefly to bind the dough, about 4 turns. Pat the dough into a 1-inch thick round. Cut this round into 8 to 12 wedges. Transfer the wedges to your prepared baking sheet, spacing 2 inches apart. Brush lightly with the additional buttermilk and sprinkle with coarse sugar if desired. Bake the scones until the tops are golden brown, about 20 minutes. Serve the scones warm or at room temperature.

TO NOT SWEAT THE SMALL STUFF

E xpect that your day will not go as planned. Anticipating something going wrong prepares you to stay calm as you deal with it. One way to make sure a snafu doesn’t derail your day? Padding your schedule.

2 Instead of reacting with negative emotions when

something bad happens, try observing. Take a couple of breaths and ask yourself if it’s something you really have to deal with now. If not, give yourself permission to move on and revisit the issue later.

3 A cknowledge your feelings, then ask yourself why

you’re feeling that way. For example, it’s OK to feel annoyed when a friend blows you off. Once you’ve identified the emotion, it’s easier to move on with your day.

4 R eframe the situation as an obstacle to overcome. If you’re able to overcome this obstacle, you’ll emerge a stronger person.

5

L ook for silver linings. If you waited all morning at home for a repair person who never showed, try to view it as an unexpected luxury (were you able to sleep in a little later or spend time reading?) instead of a waste of time.

6 F ake it till you make it. Sure, emotions create facial

expressions, but it works the other way around, too. Smiling — genuinely or not — actually boosts your feelings of well-being over time.

7 Just breathe. It’s those slow, deep breaths that create calm feelings.
