EDITOR’S NOTE
KANSAS CITY IN BLOOM Easter is one of my favorite holidays. There’s nothing sweeter than pastel dresses, big Easter hats, and seersucker suits. In fact, I’m sharing a few of my favorite Easter pieces in this month’s “Melanie’s Must-Haves” column, including a gorgeous handmade hat from the local Amina Marie Millinery. But this month’s not all about playing dress-up. I find that April is the best time to start spring cleaning and refreshing your decor. And if you’re looking for a way to completely change the entire look of the room? Consider investing in a great new piece of art. Check out our tips on how to display artwork in your home — courtesy of Kelly Kuhn, owner of Blue Gallery in the Crossroads district — on page 30. No matter how you celebrate the return of spring in this beautiful city, we wish you and your family a healthy and happy Passover and Easter!

ART EXHIBITION: Rashid Johnson, Hail We Now Sing Joy
OPEN UNTIL MAY 21 Hail We Now Sing Joy features a new body of work by Chicago-born, New York-based artist Rashid Johnson, a chapter following his acclaimed exhibition Fly Away at Hauser & Wirth Gallery, New York. This exhibition includes Johnson’s Anxious Audience, large-scale panels of white ceramic tile covered with dozens of agitated faces scrawled in black soap and wax. The new Falling Men works, in which Johnson uses his signature materials of white ceramic tile, red oak flooring, mirror fragments, and black soap and wax splatters, depict inverted figures falling through the air that can be read as flying heroes or chalk outlines of deceased bodies from crime scenes. The Escape Collages consist of large-scale vinyl images of lush tropical environments atop a modernist tile surface, some of Johnson’s most complexly layered works that introduce an expanded palette into his practice. Themes of anxiety, escape, and identity reach a climax in Antoine’s Organ, Johnson’s newest sculptural installation and the largest of his architectural grid works ever shown in the United States. Johnson’s towering minimalist grid structure is bursting with hundreds of potted plants, videos, lights and sculptures, creating a lush oasis that engages his audience with music, literature, and video, transitioning the anxiety expressed in other works in the exhibition into action.

WHAT, WHERE Meet Laurie Morrissey
WHO: Laurie Morrissey WHAT: Owner of LM Connect and the source for all things P.R. and marketing related. The real question is: What can’t this girl do? She helps many businesses in KC with advertising, social media, public relations, branding, business development, and fundraising and event planning. FAVORITE PLACE TO EAT IN KC My go-to places are Tavern and Enjoy Food + Drink — both in Mission Farms. I crave the smoked salmon appetizer from Fiorella’s Jack Stack, and the crazy lobster roll from Sushi House in Town Center Plaza. For lunch, I love the split-pea soup from Dean and Deluca, also in Town Center Plaza. FAVORITE DRINK IN KC The “D” cup on the patio of Gram & Dun on the Plaza on a warm summer day. FAVORITE PLACE TO SHOP IN KC When I’m not conveniently buying most everything for my family at Amazon and Target, I love heading to Feng in Leawood, InClover in Prairie Village, and Giovanni Rose (a group of local personal shoppers) for handbags, gifts, and clothes. For my home, I always find great things at Spruce Home in Leawood. FAVORITE HIDDEN GEMS IN KC Laura Little Chocolates in Prairie Village and Family Tree Nursery in Overland Park. I always find the best gifts for family and friends at both places. FAVORITE PLACES TO TAKE OUT-OF-TOWN GUESTS Start the day with a sweaty class at Fusion Fitness in Overland Park. Next, get a juice from t.LOFT on the Plaza, head to a Royals game, grab drinks and apps at Tom’s Town in the Crossroads, and then go out for late-night fun at one of the great spots downtown.

WINTERWOOD ESTATE: RUSTIC LUXURY FOR SALE
I
f you’re lucky, you find a place that you can call your own private Shangri-La — an oasis so self-contained and serene, you might never want to leave. Incredibly, that slice of heaven exists on Beaver Lake just outside of Eureka Springs, Arkansas, and has its own name — Winterwood Estate. The Winterwood Estate was conceptualized and designed by Eric Schabacker, a record producer and music business veteran raised in New York who fell in love with the beauty of the Ozark Mountains in 1994. Inspired by

the architecture of estates located in the Adirondacks from the early- to mid-20th century, Schabacker oversaw the four-year project of building the estate into what is now a destination for family, friends, musicians, and vacationers. Schabacker describes the vibe at Winterwood as “rustic luxury — a yin-yang of influences providing a unique blend of natural beauty and contemporary comfort.” As with many families, Schabacker, his wife, Sativa, and their children are growing into the next stage of their
lives, which means a move is inevitable. Now, this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to own something beyond your wildest dreams can be yours — because the Winterwood Estate is for sale! Nestled on 81 mountainous, wooded acres with 3,700 feet of shoreline on Beaver Lake, the estate is simply breathtaking. From the main house to the guest lakeside cottage to the recording studios, Winterwood is a sanctuary where you can raise a family, host events, escape into nature, or
comfortably retire. And at just 25 minutes from the heart of Eureka Springs, in itself a thriving artisan community, you’ll find everything you need close by. The Winterwood Estate has its own private road that allows you to drive to the water’s edge of Beaver Lake. And with its two-slip boat dock, sleeping lean-to, and picnic, swimming, and recreation areas, Winterwood is the perfect getaway for hot summer days in the Ozarks. As you wander the grounds, you’ll find an amazing array of casual and formal gardens. Every detail was thoughtfully planned with the purpose of providing enjoyment, tranquility, and revitalization. The main house at Winterwood has 5,845 square feet of indoor living space and boasts an additional 2,128 square feet of decks and porches, including an outdoor bath and shower area. The house backs up to limestone bluffs and a seasonal waterfall. The main house has two separate areas for living and sleeping, both of which are connected by an enclosed walkway, offering a unique blend of function and form. There’s also a den, formal dining room, and chef’s kitchen with another stone fireplace and eat-in area, a master suite with an en-suite bath, and two more bedrooms.
The Winterwood Estate was Schabacker’s labor of love. “In building the main house, no expense was spared — from the plywood floors to the cathedral ceilings,” he shares. “No drywall was used in the building’s construction as every wall was built from lumber, and the studs are exposed so you can ad-

KACIE HOW TO HELP YOUR FASHION-CHALLENGED FRIEND
How do I (nicely) let a friend know she needs to update her clothing style?
Talking about appearances with your friends can go a variety of ways depending on whom you’re talking to. Possibly, your friend simply doesn’t think fashion and style is a priority, or she isn’t aware her wardrobe needs an overhaul. But, be careful when offering unsolicited advice about one’s appearance. There’s a fine line between helpful and offensive. One nonconfrontational way of helping your friend pick out new clothes is to invite her to go shopping with you. You could tell her you’re looking for some great new pieces and think it’d be fun to try on different styles together. Then, you can pick out items that might be more flattering for her body type. Still, you must remember that the person is the most important part of any friendship — not her style. If your friend’s style is becoming such a huge deal in your relationship, it might be time to reexamine your own priorities and what you’re looking for in friendships. Whatever course of action you pick, remember: Always be nice, and don’t push too hard. It’s ultimately your friend’s choice if she’d like to change her style.
If you have any questions you’d like Kacie to answer, submit them to our managing editor at: ashley@simplykcmag.com.

AROUND TOWN
Written by Julie Burton | Photos by Julie Burton
Kansas City actually doesn’t have as much tornado activity as some other places. We’re in tornado alley in some respects but places like Joplin, Oklahoma, southern Kansas, central Kansas — they get more tornadoes than what we do. But that doesn’t mean we won’t get hit one day. Have you ever seen a tornado? I’ve seen one. I went tornado chasing with my brother, Scott, all the way down to southwest Kansas in 1999. We drove six hours and right when we got there, this thunderstorm was taking form and I’m like, “Oh my gosh, I’m going to see my first tornado.” It was a perfect structure of a thunderstorm and this wall cloud comes down perfectly and then the tornado starts chasing us. Storm chasers want to get close and watch it. I wanted to get away. I never stopped. My brother was yelling, “Gary, you can stop! You can stop!” I just kept driving toward Oklahoma. But I did see it. It was incredible. I don’t want to see another one. I’m not a stormchaser.
KSHB’s Channel 41 Action News Chief Meteorologist Gary Lezak jokes around in front of the station’s green screen.
ALL EYES TO THE SKY: AN INTERVIEW WITH KSHB’S GARY LEZAK “Gooooood evening, Kansas City.” Any Kansas Citian will know those four words belong to KSHB’s Channel 41 Action News Chief Meteorologist Gary Lezak. April in Kansas City brings thunderstorms and unpredictability. What’s it like to predict the future in one of the toughest cities in the world to
26

forecast? Lezak has been practicing since he was just a kid to tell you the answer. SKC: Kansas City adores you. But we also get concerned — what do you do when severe weather strikes? Does the station have an emergency place to take shelter? Lezak: When there’s a severe-weather situation and we see a tornado coming toward the Plaza, we have a procedure here we’ve practiced. There is a below-ground area where we can broadcast from. It can be quite intense at the studio when something serious is happening. When we see a tornado developing, it hits me — there are people out there in the path of this. We need to give them the best information we can.
You grew up in Southern California, where the weather doesn’t change much. What sparked your interest in meteorology? I was obsessed with weather since the day I was born. My first memories are of clouds — all I cared about were clouds and rain. Growing up in Los Angeles, there are no tornadoes or hurricanes. Rain is as exciting as anything out there. That’s possibly why I get so excited about the severe weather here when it happens. Did you imagine yourself as a meteorologist when you were a kid? I’ve wanted to be a meteorologist since I was 5 years old. I am living my dream. I used to play little weather forecasting games as a kid. I would make up my own little country because the weather where I grew up was boring. I would forecast the weather for my country. That’s probably where I developed some television skills.
You recently wrote a children’s book. Did writing “It’s a Sunny Life” come easily to you? The publisher and I came up with the idea to write a children’s book [that would incorporate my weather dogs — Windy, Stormy, Breezy, Sunny, and Jamie. Jamie is the little twist in the book. Jamie was my first weather dog when I started my career in 1986. I had a great story to tell so I just started writing. It ended up turning into this beautiful children’s story. I’ll probably have a second book in the series after the success of the first one. You’ve lived in California, Oklahoma, and Kansas City. How does KC compare to the other locations? A study revealed that Kansas City is one of the most difficult places to forecast in the entire world. Seriously. It’s a challenging place. We’re the most unpredict-
able. I think we do a really good job of it. I think it would be easier to forecast the weather elsewhere but I love the challenge here. I love forecasting Kansas City’s snow and the big thunderstorms. Where do you see meteorology going in the future? Will we ever be truly accurate in long-range predicting? Gary Lezak often brings his dog, Sunny, into work with him.
My company is Weather2020.com. It features my theory — the Lezak Recurring Cycle (LRC). The weather is a recurring cycle above us. There is organization in the air and what we discovered is that the pattern is cycling regularly. We can predict the weather 50, 100, or even 200 days at a time. Now, for your wedding day — if it happens to be in a period where there was no chance for rain then I can tell you there’s not going to be any rain on your wedding day.
two, you can get it right. Absolutely, the technology will keep getting better. That will help us in short-range forecasting as well. Remember: We are forecasting the future. Whenever we can forecast the future, it’s incredible when we get it right. And we do a very good job at that.
But to get it that accurate 100 days out — probably not yet. Within a day or

is my hobby. Weather is my career. Talking about weather on television is an incredible thing. There isn’t a day that goes by I don’t love coming into work. Even when I retire, whenever that is, I’ll still be doing weather in some form. Have you ever had a blooper while on air? Oh yeah. I was working in Oklahoma several years ago. On St. Patrick’s Day, there was a big storm coming into Oklahoma. I lost it on the air because I couldn’t remember the word “panhandle,” so I said, “Panama.” I couldn’t stop laughing. When I tried to gather myself, the anchor started laughing, so I started laughing even more. Everyone thought I had been drinking since it was St. Patrick’s Day.
spent my whole career forecasting — predicting the future — and we’re right about 75 percent to 90 percent of the time. People think we’re wrong more than 50 percent of the time and that’s just not true. I try not to take things personally. My biggest pet peeve is when we’re right and people think we’re wrong. I don’t like that. If the weather app is wrong and I’m right, then I’m in trouble. You’re a big dog lover. Where’s your favorite place to take Sunny in Kansas City? Leawoof Park in Leawood. 5 TIPS FOR DISPLAYING NEW ART
A
good piece of art transforms a blank wall into a conversation piece or a source of admiration. It makes people feel more relaxed and comfortable in your home. But if your piece of art is poorly displayed, it may have the opposite effect. “I think art should be the great communicator of the room,” says Kelly Kuhn, owner of Blue Gallery in Kansas City’s Crossroads Art District. “It gives people a sense of what the personality of the owner is. Art really speaks to who people are and what lies beneath.” If you have a room you feel needs the addition of a good piece of art, here are her tips to make sure your piece inspires. 1. C hoose an approach. You may have a blank wall ready for a piece of art or you may have a piece of art ready for a blank wall. If you decide which comes first, it will help you in your decision-making. If you already know the location for the piece you can determine what colors and styles of art work well in that location. If you already have a piece of art, on the other hand, you may be able to change the colors of your walls or redecorate your
30
| SIMPLYKCMAG.COM
room to suit that piece. 2. T ry out different pieces. Kuhn, who has been in the arts for 24 years and has owned Blue Gallery 16 years, explains there are options for trying out different art pieces to see what works for your home. “Send me an image of the wall from straight on,” she says, “and give me a dimension of the wall. We will virtually install ideas. Maybe a great landscape or abstracts of various colors. The next thing we do is have you narrow down what you would like to see and have you see those items in your home.” This can be especially helpful in unique or challenging spaces. 3. P ay attention to location. It’s important to be aware of where on your wall you are placing your piece of art. “A common mistake is when the artwork is hung too high,” Kuhn says. “This varies, but a general rule is that the middle of the piece should be at about 58 to 60 inches. If you look at the middle of each painting on a wall, they should all be lined up.” If the room is meant for sitting, it is better to have the middle of the pieces fall at about 58 inches. If the room is one you usually stand in or walk through, it’s best to shoot for 60 inches.
4. U se art lighting. “It’s an incredible experience to have all the other lights off and still light your artwork,” she shares. “If you plan to have an art collection, get art lighting.” It can be difficult to determine where and how to install art lighting, though, which is why Kuhn recommends hiring a professional. “It gets a little more scientific based on the distance of the outlet from the piece, whether or not the piece is under glass, what other kinds of lighting are in the room, and how tall the ceilings are,” she explains. “There are lighting experts in Kansas City who can advise you.” One local lighting expert Kuhn suggests is Yarnell Lighting. 5. P ay attention to your artwork’s hardware. Nothing would be worse than finding your new artwork on the floor. “Definitely make sure you have a strong hook. I like the kinds of hooks where the nail goes in at an angle,” Kuhn explains. “Check to make sure the cable on your art is not slipping as well.”

Finally, you might find that you’ve had a great piece of work all along — but have simply had it in storage. Updating old frames can really make a difference. “If it’s an older piece and you’re not hanging it because it needs to be reframed, just go ahead and frame it and get it on the wall,” Kuhn says. “It makes a huge difference to put an updated frame on something that looks dated.”

ost kids these days end up with braces or some kind of teeth-straightening devices. In fact, you may already be familiar with orthodontics because you had braces as a kid. Orthodontics is a form of dentistry that “entails correcting bites, straightening teeth, and helping

to assist in any kind of jaw corrections,” says Dr. Angela Williams owner of And Smile Orthodontics in Shawnee, Olathe, and Kansas City, Kansas. “We also provide teeth whitening and bleaching services. It’s about changing a person’s smile and giving them the confidence to set them up for their life.” It’s more than just cosmetic corrections, though. “People may be born with certain syndromes that require orthodontics to widen the
teeth to the correct position because their jaws don’t grow correctly,” she explains. “People may also have teeth

Dr. Williams started practicing three years ago after having lived in the Kansas City area for more than 10 years. She and her husband originally moved from southeast Missouri to Kansas City because of work, but decided to make Kansas City home. “At first, I worked as an independent contractor in Kansas City,” Dr. Williams says, “but I wanted something of my own that I could grow and develop.” Dr. Williams’ desire to own her own practice was realized when she purchased Dr. R. And Smile Orthodontics has three locations throughout the metro: Dr. Williams’ and her staff’s desire to make people feel comfortable and welcome shows in what people say about the office. “Dr. Williams was great! LOVE YOUR LASHES Lash extensions are added to individual lashes one by one, using a special glue.
A
s far as beauty trends go, it’s still all about the eyes for 2017. Eyelash extensions have become prominent the past few years, and it continues to be a hot beauty trend. What used to be an expensive beauty splurge has now become affordable as more places are now offering this service. Whether you want a natural look or going for more dramatic, there are lash extensions for every personal style. I had the opportunity to try lash extensions. Here’s my experience. I’ve always had thin lashes — and not many of them. Being blonde, they’re also not very dark and thick. I have spent (perhaps too much) money trying to find the right mascara to give them a boost. When a few friends started getting lash extensions, I was envious. They
36
| SIMPLYKCMAG.COM
looked amazing! But, I was intimidated not only by the price, but by the process itself. I had seen images of women sitting in a chair getting lashes applied with a tiny tweezer and it just looked painful. My friends assured me it wasn’t, so I finally bit the bullet and gave them a try. I visited Hoopla Studio in Leawood — but there are tons of awesome options in the metro area, such as Roca Salon & Spa in Midtown, Kristine Kay Skin Spa in Waldo, and Flaunt Esthetics in Westport. Because of the rising popularity of lash extensions, there are now studios dedicated solely to this service! The newest one on the scene is Amazing Lash Studio in Overland Park. Hoopla offers a few options as far as pricing and levels of lashes,
starting at $75 per set. I chose the partial set. It’s a little more expensive than a mini set and less of an investment than the full. The process took about an hour. I simply laid on the table as they added each lash one by one. It’s not as relaxing as a facial, but it’s absolutely not painful. (And it’s a great excuse to relax for an hour!) The technician put a hydrating patch under my eyes, which also made it easier for her to add the extensions. The only part that was slightly uncomfortable was when my lashes stuck together and she had to separate them. But, I was reassured, this doesn’t happen every time. My favorite thing about lash extensions is that they’re not permanent. You can always add more or take away. I’ve seen girls with really
dramatic longer lashes — or you can go the more natural route and keep them short and not as full. I was going for the second option, so that the lashes weren’t so noticeable. After the technician completed the partial set, I reassessed — then asked for a few more. It’s amazing how longer lashes made my eyes bigger and immediately gave me a polished look. A bonus: In the morning, I don’t even have to worry about makeup! Lash extensions are super easy to care for. You can’t use mascara (so that saves you some money each month) and experts discourage the use of any facial products that have oil in them. The oil breaks down the glue used on the lashes. To maintain them, you should get them filled about every three weeks, which costs an average of $40 to $60 after you invest in the initial set. Everyone’s lashes grow out differently, and it will also depend on how gentle you are on your lashes. All of these factors will play into how often you have to get them filled.

ou know when you meet a new group of people and you’re polite and they’re polite and you hope they like you? And, you know, when this new group of people lives next door to you and you realize, after a year, the politeness is over and now they’re reading about themselves in a magazine? Oh. I have four days to prepare for a five-mile mud race that includes 22 military-style obstacles, such as crawling in mud under barbed wire and climbing up walls by lifting each other up like middle-aged cheerleaders. Scott and I agreed to run a mud race with our neighbors. Our neighbors — the highlight reel: A former Kansas City Chiefs player, a former Sporting KC goalie turned broadcaster, a pediatric cardiologist, Halloween enthusiasts, a mom with arms that can open any spaghetti-sauce jar, and another mom with abs that makes me — hmmm … I should put this cupcake down. Oh! And a nice family from Iowa. Half these people have their own Wikipedia pages because of their athletic abilities. The other half do crossfit. And the remaining few have the willpower to never touch cupcakes.

He has hiked a mountain, shot an elk, and carried down the 500 pounds of meat on his shoulders. And then we have Julie Burton. Hi. The neighbors know our schedule. They know when we grill dinner. They know our parents’ cars, friends’ cars, and our kids’ bikes. They know the clanking of the trash truck will be followed by me screaming and dragging a trash bin down my driveway. The one thing they never see or hear is Scott and me having an argument.
race. I worked hard and I made good time. But that was the last time I ran. My neighbors were easily fooled into thinking I have a runner’s body. And now it’s going to be a dead body. Scott will throw me over a wall and leave me there without saying a word. The Halloween enthusiasts will stop to take makeup notes. And the cardiologist will be hard at work because the group needs its storyteller alive to tell the tale. We’re days away from the mud race and I’m still eating this cupcake. Yeah, I’ll just run tomorrow.
They never hear us argue because Scott is a firm believer in the silent treatment. And I am a firm believer in running for half a mile and then taking a mile-long stroll back home because my lungs hurt and I have a side cramp. Scott is giving me the silent treatment for being lazy. I don’t know what happened. I had months to prepare. They say kids grow up in the blink of an eye. Yeah, well, so does signing up for a mud race with the neighbors. I’m not saying I don’t work out. I’m not lazy. I go to the gym every chance I get. I lift weights. Building muscle makes my metabolism high. I am also tall and an avid eater of jalapeños. My neighbors have no idea I ignored their texts about remembering to get in a morning run. Sure, I told them I ran a 5k a few years ago. I trained for that

PARENTING
C
ongratulations! You’ve survived the Terrible Twos and middle school, both of which may be considered child’s play compared to what lies ahead: the teenage years. No longer singing “The Wheels on the Bus” from a carseat or booster behind you, your former toddler now sits in the front seat. Behind the wheel. Buckle up, folks; you could be in for a bumpy ride — especially if your new driver has a cell phone within reach. The National Safety Council reports that cell phone use while driving is responsible for one out of every four accidents — resulting in a whopping 1.6 million crashes each year. Of all cell-phone related activities, texting is by far the most dangerous and six times more likely to cause an accident than driving drunk. (Let that sink in for a moment.)

With teen drivers having four times a greater risk than adults of getting into crashes or near-crashes when texting or talking on a cell phone, it’s no wonder the teen drivers/cell phone combination makes for some anxious moments for parents. Ready for some good news? A number of resources specifically designed to help create a safer driving experience for your teen and greater peace of mind for you are now available. From contracts and pledges to wearable reminders, devices installed in the car and apps installed on your teen’s phone — all share the goal of eliminating distracted driving. But before purchasing any system or app, be sure it’s compatible with your device and/or carrier. Also be aware that data and text messaging charges, including standard messag-
ing rates for auto-reply messages, may apply for app download and usage. Here’s a sampling of options to consider: Designed with parents in mind, Cellcontrol (cellcontrol.com) is a subscription-based service featuring a hardware device that attaches to the car’s windshield and an accompanying app that blocks incoming and outgoing texts while driving. It’s also capable of disabling other phone features while the car is in motion, such as using email, social media, and accessing the camera, yet allows you customized access to specific apps such as navigation and music. Parents receive a text or email alert if Cellcontrol is deactivated or removed and you also can get detailed reports on driver performance, from braking and acceleration to speeding and approved
Be Lice Free Today! device usage. Cellcontrol works across all mobile platforms and is reportedly the only solution capable of fully blocking iPhone and iOS devices. Sprint’s Drive First app (sprint-drivefirst.safely.com), which is free to download and available to Sprint customers only, automatically locks your teen’s phone when it detects he’s driving. This app allows you to choose three preferred driving apps such as maps, navigation, or music as well as “VIP contacts” such as parents or other family members whose incoming and outgoing calls are permitted through Bluetooth or other hands-free devices. All others receive automatic text replies letting them know your teen is currently on the road and driving safely. Exit and 911 emergency buttons on the home screen of a locked device allow users to override the app. A parental lock is also available to prevent the app from being uninstalled. AT&T’s DriveMode app (itcanwait.com) shares many of the same features as Sprint’s Drive First, including silencing incoming alerts when the car is in motion, music, and navigation apps, one-touch access, the ability to receive incoming calls from key contacts when using Bluetooth, and auto-reply responses to all others with a personalized safe driving message. While a parental lock does not seem to be offered, parental alerts are sent if the app is turned off or if auto-mode is disabled. However, DriveMode is available to customers of all wireless companies with compatible devices, offers the choice of English or Spanish, and allows customization of the phone’s home screen with a personal photo reminder of why distracted driving prevention is so critical.

Two additional apps aimed at discouraging distracted driving? DriveSafe Mode (drivesafemode.com) and Live2Txt (getlive2txt.com). Finally, driving contracts provide an opportunity for parents and teens to begin the conversation about safe driving habits, then serve as a physical reminder of what all parties have agreed to. Liberty Mutual Insurance, in partnership with SADD — the student organization whose mission has expanded to include all manner of distracted driving vices including texting — has created a contract beginning with questions about safe driving and includes mutually agreed upon rules with specific consequences when violated. AAA has a similar contract outlining unsupervised driving privileges followed by a set of driving rules and consequences when not followed. If you are looking for something tangible, the “Texting Kills” and “W8 2 Txt” thumb bands and wristbands (textinganddrivingsafety.com) are physical reminders for parents and teens alike that texting while behind the wheel is never a good idea.

3
SHINE FACUETS WITH USED DRYER SHEETS.
4
IRON OUT CARPET STAINS.
5

RUB CANDLE WAX ON YOUR TILE GROUT TO PREVENT STAINING.
Can’t get rid of that ring of build-up? Sprinkle a generous amount of the Kool-Aid powder in the bowl, let it sit, brush down the sides, then flush it away!
Just rub it into the grain to get the surfaces back to their original shine. It takes a while to work, so take a break after you’ve treated the wood, then check back later for the disappearing act.
Because why not? Just add a little water and scrub away.
Place a damp cloth over the spot and press it with an iron set to high. The steam will release the stain — no chemical cleaners necessary.
Pour it on a damp rag to scrub the masterpiece right off. Your kid might not be too happy, but you will be.
The only bummer: You’ll have to clean them first. Obviously, you’ll want to make sure to use a white candle.

GOOD TASTES
Written by Lesli Lundquist | Photo by Kyndall Durkee
SPICE THINGS UP! After years of writing Good Tastes articles, you know I love recipes with full flavor! The addition of the salsa verde in this recipe kicks up the flavor several notches to keep those taste buds hap py. So, heat things up in the kitchen this month with this wonderfully savory soup.
Slow Cooker White Bean Chicken Chili Verde Serves: 12
Ingredients 1 small onion, chopped 2 fresh jalapeños, seeded and diced 2 teaspoons minced garlic 2 pounds chicken breast, fat removed 1 teaspoon cumin 1 teaspoon oregano 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder 1/4 teaspoon black pepper 1/4 teaspoon onion powder 2 cans green chilis 1 cup green salsa verde 2 cans white beans, drained and rinsed 1 32-ounce container of chicken stock 1 lime, juiced 1-1/2 teaspoon seasoning salt, garlic salt, or salt-based Cajun seasoning Shredded cheese (optional) Sour cream (optional) Avocado, diced (optional)
Directions Place the onion, jalapeño peppers, and minced garlic in the bottom of your slow cooker. Top with chicken breast and spices. Add undrained cans of green chilis and salsa verde. Add the cans of white beans and chicken stock. Let the mixture simmer on low for 8 hours (or high for 4 hours). Before serving, remove the chicken breast and shred; return to the slow cooker and stir. Squeeze the lime juice into the soup and sprinkle with seasoning salt, stir and let simmer an additional 20 to 30 minutes. Serve and top with shredded cheese, sour cream, or diced avocadoes. Meet Lesli Lundquist: A passion for cooking? Nope, not really! However, when I was diagnosed with food allergies nearly five years ago, my eyes were opened to all of the wonderful dishes that can be created day to day by simply following a recipe. I have been told that I am a “cook from the pantry” type of food guru. I love to keep my pantry stocked and to cook with the seasons, give my tastes buds a challenge, and of course feed my family delicious, home-cooked meals.

APP OF THE MONTH
ADDICTIVE APP TAKES EMOJIS UP A NOTCH The gist: Pictures are worth a 1,000 words, they say. It may be the reason emojis and emoticons are so popular these days. Why
bother typing out “hahahaha” when you can simply send an emoji of a laughing face? But why stop there? Why use a generic laughing face emoji when you could be using a cartoon avatar of your own face?! Enter: Bitmoji — your own personal emoji. The app, available for both Android and iPhone, gives you multiple physical characteristics and accessories to choose from to match your appearance. Once you have your avatar, you can send a sticker that features a reaction for just about any phrase over text, email, and social media directly from the Bitmoji app. And if you use Snapchat, you’ll unlock “friendmoji” — two-person bitmojis featuring you and your friends. You’ll never be at a loss for words again.
