PUBLISHER’S NOTE

SUNSHINE, HERE I COME As I write this publisher’s note, it’s freezing outside. This weekend, it’s supposed to be in the 50s, but today, it’s about 35 degrees. Sure, this is typical Midwestern weather, but I can never get used to it. I’m ready to wear those sundresses! Back in high school, teenage-me would be in the tanning bed in preparation for the coming sunny days. I’d get a base tan for my spring-break vacation. And during the summer, I’d slather on suntan oil to get that perfect level of bronze as I lounged by the pool. I only used sunscreen to prevent sunburns. Today, of course, we know the dangers of tanning. Ultraviolet radiation from the sun and artificial sources are a known carcinogen, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the World Health Organization’s International Agency of Research on Cancer. As an adult, I’m more cautious in the sun. I’m diligent with sunscreen — especially on my face — and I am militant about my kids’ sunscreen usage. If you’re worried about your (awful) past skincare decisions like I am, today’s advancements in beauty technology can help repair skin from past damage. But, of course, the most important thing you can do for your body is to protect it — and it’s never too late to start. You have tons of options, from sunscreen to protective clothing. Flip to page 14 to learn easy ways to protect yourself. Here’s to a safe and sunny spring!

WHAT, WHERE Meet Jonas Barrish Who: What:

JONAS BARRISH Dad to Dov, husband to Meghann, realtor to many! Barrish’s passions include art, interior design, and people. All of these things combined are intertwined into his profession as a realtor. Barrish has been helping people buy and sell homes since 2005. As a realtor, he gets to take life’s journey with others. He loves seeing his clients’ families grow with new additions or new marriages and downsize as kids go off to college. He enjoys being a part of his clients’ journeys through the good and the bad … and making new friends along the way.

Where:

FAVORITE PLACE TO EAT IN KC

I love to eat out, but since we had our first kiddo in 2016, we eat out much less. I have so many favorites. Rye is next to my office in Leawood, and they just opened a second location on the Plaza. I love their steaks, fried chicken, and cocktails. Meghann’s favorite food is Mexican and Port Fonda is our go-to for that. Speaking of Westport, I love the Westport Cafe & Bar. The owners are so passionate about their French food and it shows. They treat you like family. They treat you like family. For Italian, Bella Napoli is my absolute favorite. The whole Branzino is outstanding. I grew up with my Dad and sister being vegetarians, so I still have a love of vegetarian food as well. Cafe Gratitude is my spot for that. I have to mention Eddie V’s as well because we love it so much.

FAVORITE DRINK IN KC Since I have a Westport theme going here, I should start off with Julep. Creative cocktails are the star. They change with the season so you never know what will be on the menu. The owner, Beau, is a walking encyclopedia on the subject of whiskey and is always eager to educate his customers. He even gave me the recipe for one of my favorite drinks there so I could make it at home. Ça Va is also a favorite. The staff, food, and selections are incredible. If I am downtown for a drink, Tom’s Town is likely where you’ll find me. It has a great vibe. FAVORITE PLACE TO SHOP IN KC

If I’m clothes shopping, I like J. Crew and locally owned stores Ulah, Houndstooth, and Baldwin. For our home, anyone who’s been inside will tell you it is eclectic and unique. I love art and oddities, so I look for unique finds in the West Bottoms, Mission Antique Mall, and River Market Antiques. Also, Coveted Home on the Plaza is a great shop; the owner has great taste. Finally, I’ve been meaning to check out Unruh Furniture and Urban Mining.

FAVORITE HIDDEN GEMS IN KC

Pawn and Pint is a recently discovered gem. It’s a board game bar I never knew existed, and it’s genius. While everyone knows about Manifesto, it’s still hidden and it is a gem, so I’ve gotta add that to this list. I know a lot of real estate-related hidden gems. For example, there is a home in my neighborhood that has an underground tunnel to the home next door. Rumor has it that Vernon Miller’s relatives lived in one of the homes and Vernon Miller and Pretty Boy Floyd would use the tunnel to go back and forth from the homes without being seen.

FAVORITE PLACES TO TAKE OUT-OF-TOWN GUESTS

It all depends where the guests are from. Everyone must try at least two of our famous barbecue restaurants. I’m also a huge fan of The Nelson-Atkins Museum and I love to show it off to visitors.

BE WELL

Written by Jackie Woods

1. WEAR SUNSCREEN. 2. AVOID TANNING BEDS. 3. USE PROTECTIVE SUN GEAR. If you have purchased sunscreen lately, you know that the sunscreen aisle can be overwhelming. With so many choices, how do you decide which sunscreen is best for you and your family? Kyle prefers cream versus spray sunscreen and says a higher SPF is always best. You should never use less than SPF 30. “You need one ounce, or one shot glass, of sunscreen for your body and a nickel-sized amount for your face,” Kyle explains. “With spray sunscreen, the skin must be glistening and moist to get adequate coverage.” Mineral-based sunscreens, which contain fewer chemicals and are often less irritating to sensitive skin, may be the best choice for children. However, it is not always easy to convince adults to use mineral blocks because of the white, opaque appearance it leaves on the skin.

SKIN CANCER PREVENTION: SUN SMART TIPS FOR YOUR FAMILY

With sunny days ahead, now is the perfect time to think about protecting your skin and take the necessary steps to prevent skin cancer. Sun protection is important for everyone, regardless of age, race, or your geographic location. After all, you can still get sunburn on a cloudy day in Alaska!

“The best sunscreen is the one you will use,” she says. “My advice is to find a sunscreen in which you like the feel and smell, and use it often.” It’s smart to establish a routine of applying sunscreen in the morning, even if you do not expect to be outside that day. Plans can change, so incorporating sunscreen into your morning routine will ensure you are ready for impromptu summer fun. Don’t forget to reapply every two hours.

Jesse Lopez Jr., DO, is a a board-certified general surgeon and owner of Heartland Surgical Care, which offers several services to help with weight loss and holistic healing.

HEARTLAND SURGICAL CARE:

A HOLISTIC APPROACH TO WEIGHT LOSS Losing weight can be an ongoing struggle. Exercise and diet do wonders for some people, but for others, the battle with weight gain may seem like a lifelong stalemate. The United States especially struggles in this area. Approximately one-third of U.S. adults are considered obese, according to the Centers for Disease Control.

18

| SIMPLYKCMAG.COM

A reason weight gain is such a complicated problem for many people is that it’s affected by such a variety of factors. This is why Jesse Lopez Jr., DO, of Heartland Surgical Care, approaches his practice from a holistic perspective. “We are a holistic and integrative medical and surgical practice that looks at every aspect of the patient,” Dr. Lopez explains. “That includes their physical, emotional, and spiritual needs. It is important to evaluate these to help the whole person heal.”

“You may have to go to five different places to get what we offer here.” Heartland Surgical Care has been in the Overland Park area since 2005, but Dr. Lopez has been a practicing surgeon for nearly 28 years. Dr. Lopez’s practice offers several services to help with weight loss and holistic healing. These include surgical weight loss services, such as the Sleeve Gastrectomy; medical weight loss services; bioidentical hormonal medicine and metabolic treatment; and soon, stem cell therapy. You might be able to find some of these services at other practices in the Kansas City area, but not all under the same roof. “You may have to go to five different

places to get what we offer here,” he notes. Stem cell therapy is a service that Dr. Lopez is excited to begin offering at Heartland Surgical Care. Stem cell therapy addresses degenerative joint diseases, which can occur from years of obesity. Traditional treatment options include surgery or joint replacement, which involve invasive procedures and a lengthy rehab. Stem cell therapy is much less invasive and uses your own body to heal itself. This is done by harvesting stem cells from your body, then taking the cells through a process to separate them. “We can then combine the stem cells with platelet-rich plasma and inject that back into the joint of concern,” Dr. Lopez explains. This causes tissue to regenerate in the joint as you heal. Another new service Dr. Lopez will soon provide at Heartland Surgical Care is the Obalon Balloon System, a product intended for adults with a BMI of 30 to 40 who have been unable to lose weight through standard diet and exercise. The simple, noninvasive Obalon Balloon System uses a series of capsules swallowed by the patient over a six-month period and inflated in the abdomen. “This process decreases a patient’s appetite, leading to weight loss,” he says. Holistic care involves more than just medical services. It also consists of a person’s emotional and spiritual needs. Heartland Surgical Care addresses the whole

person by getting to know patients in a way medical practices rarely do. Dr. Lopez describes the culture as one in which patients feel like family. “If a patient is in the hospital for an unrelated condition, one of my staff members will be on the phone checking on them because they are like family to us,” he shares. Heartland Surgical Care also offers spiritual care. “We do a lot of counseling with our patients,” Dr. Lopez says, “and we have a certified Reiki Master practitioner who works with our practice.” Stormyee Edmonson, who is the Reiki practitioner, also is a life coach and ordained minister. be exciting and scary at the same time. I hear your concerns who’ve met through dating websites. Here are a couple suggestions for you: 1. If you do go the online route, get to know the person through text, phone calls, and email before meeting. If you meet up, make sure it’s a public place. And always let a friend know who you’re meeting and when and where. You can never be too safe! 2. If you feel more comfortable starting slow, let friends and family know you’re ready to meet people. Many couples meet by being set up with someone, but your loved ones may not know you are ready until you tell them. Finally, be open to new experiences and people — and have fun!

Dr. Darin Upchurch of MaxLife Weight Loss & Body Balancing has created a system that helps people regain their health naturally.

TO BALANCE YOUR HEALTH AND YOUR LIFE, BALANCING YOUR BODY IS THE FIRST STEP Are you feeling out of balance and out of sorts, perhaps both physically and mentally? Life today seems to present us with a host of challenges and struggles, leaving us feeling tired, overwhelmed, run down, sluggish, prone to health issues, and, yes, even carrying some extra weight.

28

| SIMPLYKCMAG.COM

While it may be easy to think, “I’ll just start a new diet and I’ll begin to feel better,” it’s not as simple as it sounds. In fact, diets do not create health. If you’re ready to take charge of your overall health, whether that means overcoming illness, increasing your energy levels, reducing or eliminating your medications, losing those excess pounds, or a combination thereof, then you deserve to obtain the maximum out of your efforts by turning to MaxLife, an exclusive Technology Based Weight Loss and Body Balancing Program, created by the owners of MaxLife Weight Loss & Body

Balancing in Overland Park, Kansas. “This unique technology-based program was created by our team,” says Co-Founder and Wellness Coach Heather Klepfer. “Patients see success when they follow the easy program specific to them based on the results of the technology, the basics of which help you get your body back into a state of maximum functioning potential within 30 days. This is about regaining your health the natural way.” Not a diet, a pill, or a urine test, this noninvasive technology

specifically identifies the imbalances within your body through a variety of measurements specific to you, including out-of-range biomarkers that involve toxin levels, mineral imbalances, hormone imbalances, visceral fat, improper organ function, and cellular hydration levels, among many others. It also can identify a comprehensive list of proteins, fruits, and vegetables your body has a biological preference for that will, in turn, assist in reducing overall inflammation as well as detox on the cellular level, increase mineral levels, and properly burn unhealthy, stored fat. Through the information obtained with this technology, the MaxLife experts can develop a nutrition and healthy

lifestyle plan designed just for you. This program is specific to the needs of each individual. There is no one price or program that fits all. “It is important to understand this is not a diet or HCG,” says Dr. Darin Upchurch, owner and co-founder. “This program allows you to get healthy internally, putting your body back in a state of balance.” Through the information obtained by the Body Composition Analysis (BCA), a snapshot is created of your internal health factors and imbalances. The results are specific to you, eliminating the guesswork for what you need internally

to function in a state of balance. Body Balancing has helped patients reverse health challenges, including excess weight, diabetes, sleep apnea, thyroid disorders, autoimmune diseases, and fibromyalgia.

“If you don’t make time for your wellness, you will make time for your illness.”

“I feel better! I have more energy,” says enthusiastic patient Teresa, of Kansas City’s Mix 93.3 Rocket and Teresa Show, who shed 21 pounds in 30 days. “I don’t crave junk food anymore. I love the changes in my body shape and the way clothes fit.” Eating certain foods, even healthy ones, can lead to imbalances in your body, and an integral part of this technology identifies specific foods that are beneficial to you and which foods are not. Klepfer, for example, loves kale, a healthy food. However, her body is not efficient at digesting kale, so that does not make this otherwise healthy food beneficial for her. “It’s truly resetting those internal health factors to help you live a healthy life,” Klepfer explains. “If you don’t make time for your wellness, you will make time for your illness.”

“I lost 25 pounds and 20 inches overall in only 30 days! I feel amazing and in control of my health. My joint and back pain have pretty much disappeared. The inflammation is gone. I have more energy — as in all-day energy — and my thyroid medications have been drastically reduced. My sleep has improved and my skin glows! I am outwardly glowing each day because I am so happy that I found a program that absolutely works and is so worth it. My body is finally working for me instead of against me after many years of trying everything else out there. I am wearing clothes that have been sitting in my closet for two years!” — Amanda, Gardner, Kansas

At the end of the day, just because you may feel good today doesn’t necessarily mean you are healthy. “You are the expert and everyone else is a consultant,” she says. “You have to be in control of you and your health.” If you’re ready to reset your body to function at its maximum potential, schedule an appointment by calling 913.717.0808 or go to maxlifebody.com. The clinic is located at 11012 Quivira Road in Overland Park.

BEAUTY

Written by Rebecca Fischer

BEAUTY GAME-CHANGERS

Winter is officially over — it’s time to break out of cozy mode and embrace the changes that come with spring, like trying a new look! We collected the top tips and trends for the season from local beauty artists to make it easy for you to do just that.

FOR HAIR THAT TURNS HEADS Is it really true that blondes have more fun? No, probably not. And lucky for brunettes, this spring’s the perfect time to take advantage of new color technology and techniques. “So many times I hear from brunettes that they feel bored with their style,” says Vern Warner, a longtime stylist and Redken-certified colorist at Hair

Style salon (hairstylekc.com) in the West Plaza. “A few well-placed foils will keep a brunette brown while creating key interest spots.”

“They’re now mainstream, thanks to the Kardashians and their crew,” she says. “Wigs might have seemed weird 10 years ago, but not anymore.”

Still trending for all looks, no matter the color of your hair or your age, are bright pops of color, Warner adds, making this the perfect time to try something different.

That’s probably also due to a big improvement in the quality of wigs and extensions. Natural wigs can be styled and colored just like your own hair, and they’re easy to care for.

Wendy Steinnagel, co-owner of Oliver’s Hair Salon (oliverssalon.com) in Overland Park, says advancements in color technology help keep hair healthier and require less maintenance, while adding shine and depth of color.

GET GLOWING SKIN (WITH A TOUCH OF GLAM)

She recommends treatments and hair care systems to improve scalp and hair health, encourage hair growth, and keep color vibrant.

“A common thread throughout a lot of trends is clean, glowing, natural skin — with glowing being the keyword,” Brown says.

“They’re a game-changer, especially now that so many people are using dry shampoos,” Steinnagel says. “Cleansing the scalp to open hair follicles is important for hair growth.”

Pairing luminous skin with one bold color on the lip or eye that evokes something reminiscent of floral tones is trending, as are soft washes of a bolder tone flushed throughout the eyes, cheeks, and lips. Brown adds that highlighting and glitter will continue to reign as fun ways to add luminosity.

Warner says his clients are loving the dramatic results they’re seeing with professional keratin treatments. Lasting up to five months, these treatments smooth out your hair without doing any damage — actually improving its condition — while reducing blow-dry and styling time. Wigs and hair extensions are another game-changing trend Steinnagel is seeing.

When it comes to makeup this season, less is more, according to makeup artist and educator Shanna Brown (816.678.7363). But pops of color are in, too, just as they are with hair.

Ashley Nelson, owner of Ashley Nelson Studios (ashleynelsonstudios. com) in Downtown Overland Park, says to look into disposable mascara wands for their multitasking power. Stash them in your purse and be kiss-ready anytime — just add a little

toothpaste for a quick brush, or a little lip balm to buff away dry skin. For the perfectly lined eye, Nelson says to place your eye pencil in the fridge for a few minutes before sharpening (but don’t leave it too long, or it will become brittle). Blow-dry the pencil briefly before applying for a smooth, gel-like line. Are you traveling this spring? Eyeshadows make the perfect on-the-go blushes. To keep your skin breakoutand irritation-free, use mineral-based formulas like the ones found at Ashley Nelson Studios. “They fit adorably into refillable eye-

shadow compacts and take up half the space,” Nelson says. “Just add your favorite highlighters and contour shades to go all out.”

DON’T FORGET YOUR HANDS AND FEET … Ready to kick off your shoes and show your feet a little sunlight love? The best tool for removing calluses is a file that has coarse sandpaper on one side and fine sandpaper on the other, according to Holly Hayes, owner and nail artist at Manicuriosity inside Ashley Nelson Studios. For touchable skin year-round, she recommends soaking your feet once a week in warm water

and applying lotion or oil every night before bed. For the perfect at-home manicure, use cuticle oil and rubbing alcohol. The oil is a game-changer for getting that “salon perfect” look, but be sure to clean the nail bed of any excess oil with a little rubbing alcohol before applying two coats of polish and a top coat, Hayes says. “The final step is to apply a dot of oil to your cuticles. Don’t rub it in — just let it float over the nails,” she says. “This creates a protective layer over your polish and makes it not sticky.”

Angela Resch opened Mama Resch’s Bakery more than seven years ago to serve the gluten-free & allergen community.

MAMA RESCH’S BAKERY PROVES GLUTEN-FREE TREATS ARE EVERY BIT AS SWEET The most significant rewards in life often result from the hardest of times. Angela Resch learned this lesson firsthand and decided to turn one of her life’s challenges into a sweet little addition to Overland Park.

When Resch’s son developed health issues and difficulty concentrating eight years ago, her reaction was like any other parent — she wanted to find a way to help him. Doing her research, Resch discovered that many of her son’s symptoms could be related to food allergies, a suspicion later confirmed when testing revealed nearly 75 food intolerances, including rice and potatoes. “It’s all chemistry,” Resch explains. “It’s about how food interacts with your brain.”

By providing healthy and allergy-

“We’re focused on the entire allergen community because you lose a lot of convenience in life. You can’t just send your kids to school with money for hot lunch or go to restaurants.”

conscious food alternatives, Resch hopes to help create a more inclusive community. “People can come in and buy a couple dozen cupcakes for school, and the kids have no idea they’re gluten-free,” she says. Tammy Rhodes, a regular customer of the bakery, can’t imagine going anywhere else. Her daughter suffers from Celiac disease and tree nut and peanut allergies, which limit her food options.

Discovering her son had an intolerance

Referring to Mama Resch’s as a “true

blessing” to her family, Rhodes’ daugh-

essential first step, but one that came with additional challenges because gluten-free foods available at the time still contained ingredients he couldn’t process due to allergies and other medical issues. Determined to make things better for her son, Resch decided to do something about that. A former executive in the apparel industry, Resch understood business, but she had to learn how to bake in a whole new way. Creating her flour blends, Resch sought out to create recipes not only gluten-free, but also free of dairy, soy, corn, and nuts. As demand for her products grew, Resch moved from her kitchen into a more professional setting, spending a few years at a small business incubator before officially opening the doors to Mama Resch’s Bakery in December 2013. From donuts, cupcakes and granola bars to beautiful cakes and her best-selling

banana bread, nothing is missing from Resch’s delectable treats. High-quality ingredients, such as homemade strawberry puree for her cupcakes’ frosting, merely take the place of processed flavoring used in other products. Although providing healthy alternatives for her customers is one factor driving Resch’s success, she takes the most pride in helping to lessen the social stigma surrounding allergies. “There’s a social impact people don’t understand and need to be more mindful of,” she shares. “Whether it’s a gluten allergy or nuts, kids with these allergies can’t eat the same stuff other kids eat. “We’re focused on the entire allergen community because you lose a lot of convenience in life,” Resch continues. “You can’t just send your kids to school with money for hot lunch or go to restaurants.”

ter is now able to eat the foods she loves and bring the bakery’s cupcakes to school for birthday celebrations. “Every time we enter the bakery, her employees greet us with huge smiles,” Rhodes says. “We are incredibly grateful to Angela and Mama Resch’s Bakery for allowing us the opportunity to have some normalcy in our lives by allowing my daughter the ability to eat tasty treats, which are safe for her to eat, just like everyone else.” It’s that feeling of inclusiveness that makes Resch so proud and passionate about her work. “I love that kids, who are told ‘no’ all the time due to allergies,” she says, “can come into the bakery and be told they can have anything. It’s all safe.” Mama Resch’s Bakery is located at 12635 Metcalf Ave. in Overland Park. Contact the shop by calling 913.213.5355 or visit mamareschs.com.

MORELS, FRIED TACOS, AND CHOCOLATE BON BONS

KELLY CONWELL OF STOCK HILL Do you have a favorite taco spot in town? I love Cancun Fiesta Fresh. They have the best fried tacos — that’s my guilty pleasure. I really like El Patron a lot. Their margaritas are good and they have great fried tacos, as well. My boyfriend, Jeff, and a friend of ours and I did a taco tour down Southwest Boulevard. We stopped at every single place, got a margarita and salsa, and ate all the tacos.

36

From growing up in a small town in north central Kansas to living and traveling abroad to settling down in Kansas City, Kelly Conwell similarly keeps moving through the ranks of what she calls “pastry land.” She worked at Bluestem, Jax, and is currently co-executive chef and executive pastry chef at Stock Hill.

say that I had a favorite meal, but I have a lot of good childhood memories of food. A lot of it has to do with my grandpa — especially this time of year with morels coming into season. We used to go out foraging together, come home, clean them, and fry them. It’s a really simple, easy recipe using saltine crackers. They’re awesome.

What sets Stock Hill apart from other restaurants? Here, we do have the classic steakhouse staples, but the rest of the menu changes seasonally. Co-Executive Chef Spencer Knipper and I get inspired by places we’ve traveled, food we’ve had as kids, cookbooks we’ve recently read, and inspiration from our staff. That’s what sets us apart. We get to put our own spin and our personalities into our menus here.

Is there a dish you don’t know how to make that you’d like to learn? I don’t know if there’s a dish, but there are different techniques I’d like to be proficient in. I’ve always wanted to take a class on chocolate. Working with chocolatiers and making bon bons would be interesting. On the savory side, getting more in tune with whole-animal butchery — going from an entire animal and breaking it all the way down.

Growing up, what was your favorite meal and who cooked it? I wouldn’t

What is your guilty pleasure food? Fried tacos and Mexican food.

What is an indispensable ingredient in your kitchen? On the sweet side, vanilla and salt are super important. For savory, garlic because you can manipulate it to have a lot of different flavors. Roasting it can be sweet, we have it raw in a couple different things, and we have this awesome Lebanese garlic sauce that’s really nice with our lamb dish. Have you found it challenging being a woman and an executive chef? It can be. Sheila Lucero, the corporate executive chef for all five Jax restaurants, is a mentor. One thing I learned from her is being personable and getting to know your staff. They’re not just line cooks. I know a lot of their wives, their kids’ names. Every once in a while we’ll grab a beer together. I treat them with respect, they treat me with respect. That’s a huge thing, especially for women in leadership positions. Looking back two years ago to where I am now, I’ve grown a lot. Not everybody’s the same, and I think it takes a good chef to know the staff and know how to deal with certain situations.

PARENTING

YOURS, MINE ... OURS: TIPS FOR SUCCESSFUL CO-PARENTING Co-parenting, sometimes called joint parenting or shared parenting, is when separated, divorced, or otherwise unmarried couples share the duties of parenting their children. According to author Virginia Gilbert, a marriage and family therapist, coparenting is only an option when both parents support the other and respect each parent’s right to have a good relationship with their children. Coparenting differs from parallel parenting, which author and parenting expert Edward Kruk, PhD, describes as an arrangement in which unmarried

BECAUSE I SAID SO ...

UNSOLICITED PARENTING ADVICE I’m not an expert. I’m not an expert at anything, really. Even writing — am I an expert? “NO!” shouts every English teacher. I’m definitely not an expert in raising kids ... and I am responsible for two daughters. I’m in the throes of the school-age years and right now, that makes me an expert. I feel like one, anyway. So here you go: Here is your unsolicited parenting advice on what I know — the school-age years.

If you have a daughter, you will need a bonnet. No, not

for cutesy pictures when she’s an infant, but for school dressup projects. I don’t know why no one ever told me this — there are times in your kid’s school life that she will need to dress up like a pilgrim, a wax museum mannequin, or a Civil War-era woman. There’s always a bonnet and long skirt involved. And get your son a top hat.

It’s totally cool if your third-grader doesn’t know how to tie shoelaces. No one from the school has said anything to me about her velcro shoes. We’re cool.

Opposite sex parents are heavily favored. If you lost the lottery in passing your sex gene along, the school helps make it all OK. The father-daughter dance.

The mother-son Royals game. But what about the mother-daughter and the father-son? That bond is special, too! No, I don’t want to volunteer to plan an event.

You’ll ugly cry on the first day of kindergarten. You’re a newbie parent. We get it. It’s a sad day. I give it one year and you, too, will be toasting your kid off to first grade with a coffee in hand, a skip-hop back to your car, and the biggest smile on your face that will rival your wedding day.

After-school activities might just kill you. Financially and emotionally. Dinners are quick. Weekends are gone. It’s fine. We’re all fine. We totally have a life. I heard some great advice from my ear doctor — what? —

Don’t worry. If you have daughters, they will talk to you. And talk. And talk. And talk.

EVERYTHING’S BETTER WITH GIN The sun is shining its light all around and it’s time to seize the day and fire up the grill! Here in the Heartland, known for barbecue sauces and rubs, marinades can be instrumental in mixing up your grill routine. This Gin & Lemon Marinade from Chef Justin Chapple, culinary director at Food & Wine, is not just boozy (the alcohol content evaporates when cooked) but will elevate your chicken, pork, or shrimp. My pick for the gin is from local distillery J. Rieger & Co. distributed by Vintegrity Wine & Spirits. With their “Spring Into Gin” promotion during March and April, Vintegrity will donate a percentage of sales of J. Rieger Gin to No Kid Hungry – Kansas City, to help kids facing food insecurity connect to more school breakfast, after-school, and summer meals. One in six kids in America don’t have access to the nutritious food they need, and by sharing our strengths, we can make a difference and end child hunger — not just today, but forever. For more information on how you can help, please visit kcteam4nokidhungry.com.

M ind your posture. How you hold yourself makes an impression on others and can have an impact on your health by taking pressure of your muscles and joints. It also leads to a strong core and back.

2 Exfoliate once a week. This helps to shed the top

layer of dead skin cells, unclog pores, make skin more receptive to moisturizer, and improve the look and feel of your skin.

3 S witch your part. In your hair, that is. This will not

only give your hair more volume, but give the hair where you typically part your hair a break from the sun (and reduce the amount of grays).

4 Stay positive. A 2016 study found that happy faces

are often seen as younger than those who are sad or frowning. So stay positive and keep smiling through even the most stressful of days.

B uy jeans that flatter your butt. Look for jeans featuring a soft V-shape yolk (the patch of jeans between the waistband and butt pockets). The V-shape should sit around the top part of your bum, and the bottom of your back pockets should be where your cheek and thigh meet.

6 P ut a humidifier in your bedroom. It soothes dry

skin and helps your skin, hands, and lips stay hydrated. It also will keep your nasal passages and throat moist, which reduces symptoms like coughing and sneezing.

7 Go for creamy makeup. As we age, skin produces

less oil. Powder makeup emphasizes this. Consider switching to a lightweight tinted moisturizer with luminizing effects and cream versions of blush and bronzer.
