WELCOME FROM THE EDITOR
BEATING THE BABY BLUES I’ll never forget bringing our first baby home. After the drama and sheer length of the birthing and immediate postpartum process, it seemed like a year had passed when we walked in our front door. Jeff lugged a small U-Haul’s worth of gear in the house, made me a giant glass of ice water, and we looked at each other and said, “Now what?” For us, life at home with a newborn was not as easy as we thought. We had what we fondly refer to as our “difficult” child first. (In retrospect, it may have been our complete lack of confidence in ourselves.) Not only would she never let us set her down, she had to be bounced repeatedly and with vigor or she’d unleash a piercing cry. I’m not kidding when I say I had the best biceps of my life after bouncing her in my arms for her first six months. In addition to our lack of confidence, the first few postpartum months were really difficult for me. I made a rapid transition working 60-hour weeks to being a stayat-home mom. I was so sleep-deprived it was dangerous. I wasn’t getting enough calories to nourish my own body — everything seemed to be going straight to the baby. And because of all this, and the crazy

hormones, I was a hot mess. Being the avid reader and type-A gal I am, I’d skimmed a zillion articles on postpartum depression. I knew the signs like I knew my own name, and while I didn’t think I matched up directly, I talked with my doctor at my six-week postpartum checkup. She agreed I wasn’t a textbook depression case, but she asked one question that made something click for me: “Have you talked to your other new mom friends about this?” New mom friends. Friends who were new moms. No matter how I labeled it, I only had one (and she was drowning as much as I was). We’d tried to connect once by taking our newborns on a stroller ride, but it was cold, windy, and both our babies fussed the whole time. “Honey, I need some new friends,” I announced to Jeff one evening. “Some mom friends.” I’m pretty sure he didn’t know what to say, so he nodded vigorously and said, “Yep.” And, God bless him, he supported me while I fumbled around trying to find my “people.” It took a year or two for me
to figure out who I was as a mom, and consequently who I’d click with as a mom, but over time I found a diverse group of gals that mean the world to me. And that’s no lie. I’m pretty sure finding some “mom friends” (a funny label, because they’re so much more than just moms), cured my baby blues. And that’s why I love this month’s Parenting article on postpartum loneliness (page 38). It’s a real thing! I didn’t quite fit a postpartum depression diagnosis but I was lonely and really struggling with all the changes in my life. Postpartum loneliness is tough. But, once you acknowledge it, there are lots of great ways to fight it. Check out our tips or send it to a friend or relative who might need it. (That’s right, did you know SIMPLYkc Magazine is online? You can send any article to a friend, near or far! Check out the current magazine and find archived issues at simplykcmag.com.) Happy May, friends!

SPATIQUE: MORE THAN JUST SKIN CARE BY BRENNAN HALLOCK Photos / Nicole Bissey
It’s rare to be able to say you’ve fulfilled a lifelong dream — but Shonda Gonzales proudly makes that claim about Spatique, which provides an array of beauty and health services that offer a holistic approach to skin care. The name Spatique is a portmanteau of spa and boutique. The business opened in 2011 as an image-consulting boutique providing personalized services for color analysis and makeup. It has since evolved into a skin care center where personal, one-on-one, consultative service is still the staff ’s signature way of doing business. “Because I believe that skin care is holistic, not just products you use on your skin for a cosmetic effect, I want our clients to understand anything they do to improve their skin also improves their overall health,” Gonzales says. The way your skin looks also affects your confidence, she says, so Spatique’s therapists work to maintain the health and vitality of your skin. “Your face is the first thing people see when they look at you and the first thing you see when you look at yourself,” she explains. “Being plagued by skin conditions such as acne or melasma that affect a person’s visage can have a devastating impact on that person’s self-image. When we work with clients who want to improve their skin health, it’s a team effort between the therapist and the client.” The therapists at Spatique are committed to providing effective treatments that bring desired results. Some of the more popular treatments include antiaging skin care, body sugaring hair removal, and infrared body wraps.
Spatique Skin Care owner Shonda Gonzales says her boutique is a one-stop shop of personal skin care, image and wellness.

Spatique is the only skin care center in Kansas City that offers body sugaring as its exclusive method of hair removal. “We prefer sugaring over waxing because it’s all-natural, very gentle, and can be used on clients who
have medical conditions that are contraindicated to waxing,” Gonzales says. Body sugaring hair removal is proven to work well for all skin types, sensitivities, and hair textures. It’s never hot like wax, so it can’t burn or lift your skin. The paste used is 100 percent natural — made from sugar, water, and lemon juice. “Body sugaring provides the additional benefit of helping to eliminate and prevent ingrown hairs by gently exfoliating dead skin cells,” she explains. “Because the sugar never adheres to live cells, it will not damage delicate skin.” While beauty is at the basis of every service Spatique offers, treatments are much more than skin deep. Spatique’s variety of services come full-circle to provide you with beautiful skin, healthy bodies, and happy souls. The SpaFit™ Weight Management program is an all-natural approach to weight loss with one-on-one personal support and motivation to lose weight and maintain a healthy lifestyle. The weight-management services are integrated with the SpaFit™ Infrared Body Wrap, which uses infrared heat to help shape your body, reduce fat, and get rid of harmful toxins. Therapists administer the infrared body wrap along with specialized creams, which help reduce cellulite and slim your body while drawing out toxins and impurities.
Gonzales continues to improve Spatique with new services and practices — but staying true to her original mission of providing personalized services and one-onone care is what keeps her clients coming back. Spatique offers a variety of antiaging skin care treatments as well. A favorite among clients is the Microcurrent Facial Rejuvenation, which is a noninvasive therapy that uses a very small amount of electrical current to stimulate production of collagen and elastin, tone facial muscles, and reduce wrinkles. Other services include oncology skin care (facials for clients living with cancer), Dermafile™ (a skin polishing and resurfacing treatment that is a safe, natural alternative to microdermabrasion), and customized corrective facials. Gonzales continues to improve Spatique with new services and practices — but staying true to her original mission of providing personalized services and one-on-one care is what keeps her clients coming back. Sally, one of her clients, says her experience with Spatique has been above and beyond her expectations. “I was looking for a program to help me lose weight and keep it off,” she shares. “We made a game plan and Shonda worked with me on my budget and schedule. I’ve had about nine treatments so far, and I’ve lost 15 pounds and several inches! With Shonda and her staff ’s support, I know I’ll reach my goals.” Educating people about good skin care, improving their health, and improving their self-images continues to be important to Gonzales and to
Relax with a stress-release facial, enjoy a rejuvenating massage, unwind with soothing aromatherapy and more at Spatique.
Spatique. “My dream,” she says, “is continuing to develop and be fulfilled each day as we’re blessed to serve individuals who seek us out for skin care, body therapies, weight loss, or just for pampering.” Spatique Skin Care is located at 15145 Metcalf Ave. in Overland Park. HOME & GARDEN
BY BETHANEY WALLACE
INCORPORATE SPRING LANDSCAPING TRENDS INTO YOUR YARD The sun is out, the temperatures are up, and the Midwest is hosting more and more warm days. Yes, spring is finally upon us. Thanks to a groundhog who wanted to make everyone his friend, it even came earlier than expected. Which also means that, early or not, the Kansas City area is ready to spend as much time outside as possible. With barbeques, patio dates, family picnics, and more just waiting around the corner, we can’t wait to take on the season head-on. But whether you’re looking to make your outdoor space company-ready, or you prefer to bask in your yard alone, there are plenty of simple updates you can make. For a prettier and more enjoyable space, check out these options.
Another tip for helping your yard become more functional is modular furniture. Pieces that move and fit together in multiple combinations will help keep your space looking fresh, Pickering says. Benches or built-ins won’t provide nearly as much flexibility. Make the most out of your yard by arranging multiple outdoor living areas, he says. His clients often allocate two or more outdoor spots to meet different needs. Perhaps one space is meant for cooking and dining out, while another is made for relaxing and conversations with friends. It’s important to know exactly what type of outdoor space you want so you create a final product that meets your needs. Additions can be based on favorite hobbies, such as yard games or playing cards, to a high-end meat smoker, to changes that are more esthetic, like plants and stone additions. Professional landscaper and outdoor addition planner Maverick Pickering of Maverick Landscape says he regularly helps folks upgrade their outdoor living grounds for a better use of space.
“You can utilize the space at least two or three different ways,” Pickering says. “The best-designed patios are set up that way when you have multiple uses.”
“They really want to experience the outdoors, some of them lavishly,” he says. “I consider it an outdoor addition. They want all of the amenities,”
Don’t forget about lighting, which might just be the most important upgrade of all. With so many options for personalization and style, adding fixtures can help create a cozy, functional use to your under-used patio. Not only do lights show off your upgraded “room,” but they allow your guests to enjoy one another’s company — not just in the daylight, but long after the sun has set. Electrical upgrades like these add ambiance, and will create long-term value.
By including seating, cooking surfaces, fire pits, lights, and more, Pickering says patios and decks can be used year-round. Such additions make outdoor spaces as comfortable as home interiors. “It enhances the home, makes it feel more like a resort,” he explains. This type of upgrade is great for those are planning a staycation. Re-investing in the backyard, he says, can provide comfort — and a strong space for entertaining — for years to come.

“People say, years later, that the outdoors is their favorite part,” Pickering explains, “because they can use it year-round and it completes their home.”

AGING WELL
BY MELANIE KNOPKE
Tips for Staying Active as You Age Staying active and fit is crucial to preventing injury and illness as we get older. “A lot of the symptoms that we associate with old age — such as weakness and loss of balance — are actually symptoms of inactivity, not age,” says Alicia I. Arbaje, MD, MPH, assistant professor of geriatrics and gerontology at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore.
which causes less bone density and leads to osteoarthritis. Weight-bearing exercises can be adjusted accordingly and safely executed as long as it is tailored for each individual. Aquatics are a good choice because it takes stress off the joints of your body that may cause problems as we age. The only issue with this type of exercise is that it doesn’t allow for muscular gain unless you are also using some type of resistance in the water. Make sure to include balance and flexibility training outside of the pool as well. Ravenscroft also suggests water-rowing machines, which deliver the most efficient full-body, low-impact workout. You use 84 percent of your body muscle mass while eliminating the risk of common injuries to the ankles, knees, and hips due to the low-impact nature of rowing. Exercise improves more than your physical health. It has been proven to boost memory and help prevent dementia. It builds confidence and helps you maintain independence. If you stay strong and agile as you age, you’ll be more able to keep doing the things you enjoy and less likely to need help. There are workouts for seniors of all abilities. According to Tara Ravenscroft, head fitness trainer at Health House (healthhousekc.com) in Leawood, you first need to take into account your current physical status. A big factor is arthritis, past activity history, sedentary lifestyle, stability, and mobility. Ravenscroft, who has worked with seniors for the past five years, says any weight-bearing activity is going to be the best choice, especially because we lose muscle mass as we age,

Incorporating the use of a stability ball enables you to improve balance, stability, and posture. A GLUTEN REVOLUTION: MAMA RESCH’S GLUTEN-FREE BAKERY BY JULIE BURTON Photos / Top Left: Nicole Bissey Lower Left: Carmen Carver
It all started with a medical diagnosis and a bread maker. Three years ago, Angela Resch made a career change. She went from traveling all over the world as a corporate clothing buyer to a bakery chef. The career leap from the fashion industry to the food industry was out of love for her family. And in the end, she has helped Kansas City families with gluten intolerances taste the sweetness of a cupcake again. The road to a bakery chef was never in the long-term plans for Resch. Six years ago, her first-grader started showing signs of seasonal and skin allergies. He wasn’t growing as fast as the other kids and he had difficulty concentrating in class. Overall, Resch’s son just didn’t feel good. After many doctor visits and a lot of research, Resch had him tested for food intolerances. Food intolerance is a build-up in your system that causes inf lammation in one or more body organs and systems. The results were life-changing. “My son tested positive for 75 foods he was intolerant to, including gluten, dairy, and soy. It was a complete overhaul of our lives. I wasn’t a normal mom with three kids at the grocery store anymore,” Resch explains. Resch and her husband stopped preparing every food their son tested positive for. It took about a week to see a difference. The results were mind-blowing. “He was a different kid,” Resch says. “He wasn’t agitated anymore and he was able to sit down and focus.” Owner Angela Resch (second from right) and her staff offer gluten-free, allergen-friendly, and vegan baked goods.

Removing gluten, dairy, and soy from the grocery list was not easy. Bread, potatoes,
and rice were taken away from the Resch diet and the substitutes did not taste the same. So Resch began tinkering with her own recipes at home. “I know every way not to make bread. I failed but I kept at it,” she explains. “My bakery literally started in my kitchen with a bread maker we received years ago as a wedding gift.”
“ I have parents ordering a box of cupcakes for birthdays in the classroom. The kids have no idea they’re eating gluten-free cupcakes.” — Angela Resch The only way she could find success in bread making was to create her own f lour blends. Resch learned how the different f lours affect the body. It took her more than a year to make a good loaf of bread — bread that tasted better than store-bought. Before long, word-ofmouth started traveling in the niche community of gluten intolerances. Friends and family reached out to Resch for help. Eventually, she realized she should open up a shop, and Mama Resch’s: A Gluten-Free Bakery was born. Working 14-hour days has its payoff. “I like getting to know people,” Resch shares. “Every person who walks in has a story. It really is like the old neighborhood bakery.” Resch realizes how hard it is for kids with food restrictions to socialize. Socialization, no matter what age, almost always involves food or drinks. When a child can’t have a piece of pizza at a birthday party or a cupcake in school, they can feel left out. Resch brings normalcy to those kids. “My favorite thing to hear in my bakery is a parent saying — everything here is safe for you,” Resch adds. The bakery is not only gluten-free, but also dairy-, nut- and soyfree and allergen-friendly. Mama Resch’s Bakery has recently been approved for area nut-free schools. “I have parents coming in here and ordering a box of cupcakes for birthdays in the classroom. The kids have no idea they’re eating gluten-free cupcakes. They taste that good,” Resch laughs. “I don’t like eating cardboard. I enjoy food. I worked really hard to make sure the food I make tastes as good or better than store-bought.” After three years in business, her top-selling item is bread, of course: her banana bread just f lies off the shelves. She also sells cupcakes and novelty items such as “cookies and cream” — her own version of an Oreo. Pies are made seasonally and Resch recently started offering brownies. Resch’s next challenge is making grain-free breads. The bakery is an answer to a health issue in the community. Kids can stay healthy, yet still be a kid pleading for a cupcake from mom. You can find Mama Resch’s: A Gluten-Free Bakery at 12635 Metcalf Ave. in Overland Park. Visit mamareschs.com or call 913.213.5355 for more info.

Childhood Conditions You Still May Have
We assume that as we grow out of childhood and its wonders, we leave behind the many conditions associated with childhood as well. While it is true that issues generally associated with kids such as allergies, ADHD, chickenpox, acne, and asthma are not as common in adults, they are still present. Many of these illnesses persist long into adulthood, reappear in adulthood, or never truly leave.
ALLERGIES Adult-onset allergies are common and can be caused by a broad array of allergens. Seasonal and food allergies are some of the most common. “Often, people are affected by allergies and may not even realize it,” says Bruce Pfuetze, MD, of College Park

Family Care Center in Overland Park. “For example, ear and sinus infections may be brought on by allergies or low immunity problems. And in older children and adults, issues like sinus infections, gastrointestinal problems, headaches, fatigue, or irritability that are frequent and chronic may be allergy-induced.” Symptoms: Hives, rash, fever, digestive problems, swollen airways, difficulty breathing, sneezing, runny nose, itchy eyes, nausea, vomiting, and cough. Treatment options: Dr. Pfuetze recommends that if you suspect you are experiencing an allergic reaction, your first stop should be at your primary care physician. Some allergies, though, such as seasonal allergies, can be treated with over-the-
counter medication such as antihistamines or decongestants.
ADHD Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a condition that does not always last into adulthood, but when it does, it affects adults and children similarly. Symptoms are manifested in different ways, however. Kids tend to fidget, squirm, not pay attention in school, disregard chores, have trouble waiting their turn, or act without thinking about risk, while adults tend to become easily bored at work, seek risky activities, lose track of time, leave tasks uncompleted, lack self-motivation, or spend money impulsively.
Symptoms: Hyperactivity, inattention, and impulsiveness. Treatment options: ADHD is treated with prescription medication. You should see a doctor. Taking medication will not solve all your problems, though. You might consider seeking out a therapist, who will help you work through emotional issues and organizational skills.
CHICKENPOX Kids are usually most susceptible to this airborne illness, but it can affect adults, too. Once a child catches chickenpox, the virus stays dormant in the body and can reinfect adults later. This condition is commonly known as shingles. The risk of hospitalization or death is higher in adults. Symptoms: Body aches, fever, fatigue, irritability, rash, and itchy blisters over the entire body. Treatment options: Vaccination is the most
effective way to prevent chickenpox. Drinking plenty of water, taking ibuprofen, and using soothing creams are recommended for those who contract chickenpox.
ACNE Many of us have memories from junior high of looking in the mirror and seeing those hated pimples on our faces. But, for some adults, this is an issue that never disappears. Acne is a skin condition that occurs when the pores of your skin are blocked. The oil of the skin travels up the hair follicle and out of the pore, causing a raised bump, or pimple. Symptoms: Raised, pus-filled bumps on the skin. Treatment options: There is a wide array of treatments for acne, from over-the-counter creams or medicines to prescription antibiotics. Many healthcare professionals also believe diet plays an important role in preventing breakouts of acne. Flare-ups might be caused
by eating sugar, working in a greasy environment, or consuming dairy products.
ASTHMA Asthma is a disorder of the lungs that can commonly be diagnosed by shortness of breath. Adult-onset asthma is when it is diagnosed in a person older than 20. Asthma also can be present in adults who developed it as a kid. Hormonal changes, viruses, illnesses, allergies, and environmental irritants such as tobacco smoke, dust, or mold can all cause asthma to be developed in adults. Symptoms: Shortness of breath, frequent coughing (especially at night), wheezing, difficulty breathing, and tightness of the chest. Treatment options: Asthma should be treated by a medical professional. Steroids can be used to prevent symptoms, and rescue inhalers can be used to treat symptoms.

ORGANIZE+MORE: ON A MISSION TO MAKE LIFE EASIER BY DEBORAH EAKIN OSBORNE Photo / Nicole Bissey
When longtime friends Jennifer Lockyear and Kristie Murphy MacDonald were hanging out one day last year, Lockyear confided in her friend that her bedroom closet was a wreck. She wanted to organize it but had no idea where to start. MacDonald assured her friend she could help. Five hours later, the closet was miraculously transformed. The process so impressed Lockyear that she encouraged her friend to start her own organizing business. Just a year later, you can find MacDonald happily helping others with their organizing conundrums. She’s on a mission to make your life easier by guiding you on your journey to an organized life, tackling one space at a time. MacDonald understands some clients may be reluctant for her to see what they consider a mess but reassures you that all she sees is potential — not the disaster you believe it to be. She also understands Kristie Murphy MacDonald loves organizing her clients’ homes, and is available to help with any project — large or small.
that it is a very personal thing for her to come into your home and go through your things. “Ninety percent of the time, clients need to get rid of some things and it can be a bit of a tightrope,” she says. For this to happen, you must change your mindset. “You can still keep sentimental items, but you cannot keep everything!” MacDonald offers a range of service options for clients. She can help you with one small space, such as organizing your pantry or your car, for example. Or she can regularly visit your home to help you tackle larger projects or multiple areas. Finally, Holton called to schedule a free consultation for the one place where everything got thrown anytime a last-minute cleanup occurred around the house — the master closet. She hired MacDonald on the spot. Once completed, Holton was so happy with the results that she takes everyone who comes to her house to show off the former hiding place. “Kristie is fabulous and did an amazing job keeping me on target when I didn’t want to keep going,” Holton confesses. “I loved having

her help me get our life back in order so I’ve continued to schedule her for more projects.” Every time MacDonald returns, Holton says, she works to create a new system if something that has already been fixed doesn’t seem to be staying organized. Another client, Courtney Lavery, always considered herself as being somewhat organized — until, that is, her realtor gifted her with MacDonald’s services when she closed on her new home. Lavery says she wanted MacDonald to focus on her garage, which had become overrun with kids’ toys, bikes, scooters, bats, balls, and the like.
“Kristie is amazing,” Lavery raves. “She is very professional, and she truly loves to organize — and is fabulous at it!” Lavery says she recommends MacDonald’s services to everyone who needs some extra help organizing: “She’s worth every penny!” Contact MacDonald today to schedule your own free, one-hour Organize+ More consultation: 913.558.8288 or macdonaldmurphy@icloud.com.
During her consultation, Lavery shared her vision of what she wanted the garage to become, then MacDonald developed a thoughtful plan of what made the most sense. Although MacDonald considers organizing products to be an investment, she tries to keep costs down by using storage systems you already have or having you buy your own materials so you don’t have to pay her for shopping. This is something Lavery greatly appreciated. “Kristie worked hard to use things I already had,” Lavery notes. If additional items were needed, MacDonald sourced them out, checking with Lavery before making purchases to be sure she was comfortable. “What Kristie did purchase cost me so little,” Lavery explains. MacDonald came with everything she needed to get the garage organized, and Lavery couldn’t be happier with the outcome. “The best

PARENTING
BY JULIE BURTON
DEALING WITH POSTPARTUM LONELINESS
One aspect of pregnancy often overlooked is preparing for the postpartum period. When the baby is born, the physical birth takes over the brain. Within 10 minutes, a new world of emotions emerge. The family is released back home or the midwife stops coming by. Parents tend to underestimate what it takes to prepare for that crucial postpartum time at home. How can you prepare for something you’ve never experienced before? Ashley Walburn is a birth doula, marriage and family therapist, and the owner of Home Holistic Center (homeholistic. com), a yoga and wellness center for mothers and families in Overland Park. Her job is to help make the transition to parenthood easier. “It’s a tricky sometimes. You have a group of intimate friends, neighbors, and family. Once you have a baby, it changes. It just does,” Walburn says. “I mean no one came over and watched cartoons late at night after I had my first baby.”
There’s a lot to prepare for once the pregnancy stick displays “positive.” The nursery needs to be furnished.
Walburn has some suggestions to new parents to help prepare for the postpartum time:
Diapers and clothes must be pur-

chased. The budget needs to fit the doctor appointments, childcare, and grocery bills. Some couples may prepare for the actual birth.

Friends and family will ask you what they can do to help. Sometimes, it’s not about asking — it’s just doing. We live in a culture that expects moms to do it all. They simply can’t. It’s hard for a new mom to admit she needs more sleep than she’s getting or that she’s out of touch with friends who used to be close.
| SIMPLYKCMAG.COM
The job of a doula is to support mothers and fathers. Simply put, a doula is your BFF during the postpartum period. This person also can help you find answers to questions during your pregnancy, such as what you should look for in a pediatrician. A doula can help with many issues, such as breastfeeding latching problems or how to survive a newborn with colic.
DENTISTRY THAT WILL MAKE KIDS

BUILD A TRIBE OF LIKE-MINDED WOMEN. Social media is a great place to find other moms. Find a Facebook support group you can turn to in the middle of the night. Chances are, another new mom will be awake. Churches are also a great way to find a circle of women with babies on the brain. “Just find a niche group that’s doing what you’re doing, whether it’s extended breastfeeding or going back to work after a baby,” Walburn says. “It’s supportive. You’re more likely to achieve postpartum success.”
Board Certified Pediatric Dentists Compassionate team of experts to put each child at ease Several treatment options for apprehensive patients Fun incentives at every visit Excellent oral health education
REMIND YOURSELF IT’S TEMPORARY. Pregnancy, postpartum, raising preschoolers — even raising teenagers — is a temporary part of parenthood. “After you have a baby, you might need to let people go and maybe draw some new people in. That’s OK. It’s life,” she advises. Everyone in your family is growing and that includes yourself. Your life changes after a baby and it will change many times over as your child gets older.

“It’s like putting the oxygen on yourself before you help your child on a plane,” Walburn says. “You need to be stable before you can take care of your child. Be mindful and ask yourself, ‘What would help me at this moment?’”
DON’T BE AFRAID TO ASK FOR HELP. The postpartum period should be a rest period. Sleep deprivation and isolation are used as torture devices in the military. It shouldn’t be torture to a new mom — let others take care of you.
FIND SOMETHING TO LOOK FORWARD TO. Hire a doula who comes in well-rested and takes care of your baby for the night. Or hire a babysitter for an hour and go take a walk. Try yoga or take a long bath with no disruptions. Find your authentic self. Once you are aware of your own needs, you have a reset button. It’s important to have something to look forward to once or twice a week.
KNOW THE SIGNS FOR POSTPARTUM DEPRESSION. It can be as simple as feeling lonely even with people around. It can also be extreme, such as feeling disconnected from your baby and feeling hopelessness. Walburn suggests checking out the Pregnancy & Postpartum Resource Center (kansasppd.org) in Prairie Village. If you or someone thinks you need professional help, you probably do.

BREAKING THE STIGMA OF MENTAL ILLNESS
What would you do if someone near you was choking? You would perform CPR, right? Would you know what to do if someone around you was talking about suicide? Would you know what to say? Or where to turn for additional help? We treat physical health conditions very seriously, but much work needs to be done when it comes to our ability to treat and even to understand mental health conditions. Recent events in the U.S. have brought more attention to mental health, but there are still myths and stigmas out there. “Mental illness is real. It’s common. It’s treatable. And it’s OK to talk about it.” This is the message of the Greater Kansas City Mental Health Coalition. Kim Romary, mental health coalition coordinator, says the time is right to start the conversation about mental illness. Millions of Americans — averaging out to one person in every five — experience a mental health condition during any given year. Conditions run a wide gamut. One in 20 Americans have a serious mental health issue, such as long-term depression or schizophrenia, according to The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI). The most serious mental health conditions are also the most stigmatized and least understood.
40
| SIMPLYKCMAG.COM
Romary hopes the stigma of mental illness will continue to decrease in similar ways to the reduction of the stigma of cancer in the 1960s and 1970s, and of AIDS/HIV in the 1980s. That’s why it is so important to talk about mental health with your loved ones. “Our call to action is start the conversation,” Romary says. “Be willing to talk about it. Having that dialogue is really what makes a difference.” Many people don’t talk about mental illness because of the stigma attached to it, and therefore may not get the treatment they need. “Getting the support of family and friends is critical in treating mental illness because it’s such an isolating experience to go through,” she explains. “The best way to support somebody is to talk to them. You don’t have to have all the answers, just be willing to hold their hand through the process.”
Know the signs; get help Signs and symptoms in adults and adolescents include: massive mood swings, prolonged or strong feelings of irritability or anger,
changes in sleep patterns, changes in appetite, excessive worrying or fear, confused thinking or problems concentrating and learning, difficulties understanding or relating to other people, changes in sex drive, difficulty perceiving reality (delusions or hallucinations), inability to perceive changes in one’s own feelings, behavior or personality, substance abuse, multiple physical ailments without obvious causes, and thinking about suicide. Symptoms in young kids are mostly behavioral, as they are still learning to talk about feelings and emotions. They may include: changes in school performance, excessive worry or anxiety, hyperactive behavior, frequent nightmares, frequent disobedience or aggression, and frequent temper tantrums. Mental health professionals use assessments to make a diagnosis of mental health conditions by using the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, published by the American Psychiatric Association. Treatments for mental health conditions vary, and may include medication, counseling, social support, and education. Romary says you should dial 911 if you or a loved one is in immediate danger. Tell the operator there is a psychiatric emergency and ask for an officer trained to help people with a mental health condition.

PETS
BY TINA KLUGMAN
Where Fido Is Welcome: Pet-Friendly Businesses in KC Many people consider pets part of their family. If you feel bad leaving your four-legged family member at home when you go out on family outings, there are plenty of pet-friendly places you can bring your pup to get some fresh air, grab a treat, or people watch! If you love to shop, you’ll be happy to learn many shopping centers not only allow dogs in the outdoor areas, but inside some of their stores as well. Many stores at The Legends at Village West and The Country Club Plaza are dog-friendly and leave water bowls outside. Don’t leave the Plaza without stopping by Three Dog Bakery, the original bakery for dogs.
Now that the weather is finally nice, many places are opening up their patios. By law, nonservice dogs are not allowed inside of restaurants, but some restaurants have patios where you can bring your leashed, well-mannered dogs. It’s always a good idea to call ahead before visiting a restaurant with your pets. Bring your own water bowl or ask a barista or bartender for one. (It’s also a good idea to bring your own treats.) Westport, Kansas City’s original entertainment district, is a great open-air neighborhood for leisurely strolls. Leashed dogs are also welcome at the open-air farmers market that runs from 4:30–7:30 p.m. on Wednesdays from May to October. If you want to grab a drink or a bite to eat, Californos has a large and pet-friendly deck. Or, visit McCoy’s Public House’s spacious patio, where you can enjoy a beer, and your dog can enjoy a bowl of water and the occasional dog treat. Some other metro-area restaurants that have pet-friendly patios include: • Aixois Bistro, a classic French bistro located in Brookside • Blue Moose Bar & Grill in Prairie Village • The Farmhouse, a farm-to-table-style restaurant in the River Market • SPIN! Pizza’s numerous locations around the city • Blue Bird Bistro, which serves organic food, and is located at 17th and Summit • The Westside Local, also at 17th and Summit (this place gets packed quickly, so call ahead) If your pets don’t mind large crowds, First Fridays in the Crossroads Arts District is a great opportunity to take them on a fun and unique outing. On the first Friday of every month, people flock to the Crossroads in Kansas City to enjoy art and live entertainment. Most of the art galleries are happy to have your dog! A bonus is that many restaurants in the area have pet-friendly patios. Remember to give them a call before stopping by!

Sliced Roast Beef Sandwiches With Caramelized Onions Serves 4
Ingredients
Directions
1 cup sour cream 1/4 cup prepared horseradish Salt/pepper 4 tablespoons butter, divided 2 tablespoons olive oil 2-3 large onions, halved lengthwise and thinly sliced 1 egg 1/4 cup milk 8 slices of fresh sourdough bread 1 pound good sliced roast beef 4 slices provolone cheese Double-burner griddle Nonstick cooking sprap
Combine the sour cream and horseradish and mix well. Season to taste with salt and ground pepper. Store in the refrigerator, covered, until ready to serve. In a large skillet over medium heat, warm 2 tablespoons of butter and the olive oil. Add the onions, salt, and pepper, and cover and cook for 10 to 15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until they are completely limp. Uncover the skillet, reduce the heat to medium-low and cook for 35 to 45 minutes, stirring frequently, until the onions are golden brown and sweet. Do not allow them to burn. Remove the pan from the heat. Mix egg and milk; set aside.
Preheat the double-burner griddle to medium heat. Spray it with nonstick cooking spray. Lay 4 bread slices on a clean work surface. Place 2 to 3 pieces of roast beef on each slice. Add 1/4 cup of caramelized onions and a cheese slice to each slice, then top with the other 4 bread slices. Brush the top slices with the egg mixture. Place the remaining 2 tablespoons of butter on the preheated griddle to melt and spread. Place the sandwiches egg side down on the melted butter and cook for 3 to 5 minutes until the bread is golden and cheese is melted. Brush the other sides with the egg mixture. Flip all sandwiches and repeat the cook cycle. Transfer the sandwiches to a cutting board and cut in half. Serve immediately with sour cream horseradish for dipping.
Meet Lesli Lundquist: A passion for cooking? Nope, not really! However, when I was diagnosed with food allergies nearly five years ago, my eyes were opened to all of the wonderful dishes that can be created day to day by simply following a recipe. I have been told that I am a “cook from the pantry” type of food guru. I love to keep my pantry stocked and to cook with the seasons, give my tastes buds a challenge, and of course feed my family delicious, home-cooked meals.

TRENDS
BY MELANIE KNOPKE
CHIC SUITS FOR ALL AGES After having kids, I knew that my swimwear choices needed to change. No more skimpy side-tie bikinis that could be untied by tiny toddler hands grasping for me in the water. And a strapless bikini top? Try chasing after a child for five minutes while swimming in a strapless top. Unless you want to give the pool-goers a show, you may have to rethink your swimwear options. Having more coverage at the pool does not mean you need to put on a wetsuit and cover yourself entirely. There are swimwear options out there to give you the coverage you need and allow you to be active with your kids, all while helping you maintain your personal style.
High necklines are a great option this season. Not only are they ontrend, but they also keep the bust in check and it will eliminate the “side boob” you may find with skimpier bikinis. High Neck Racer Back tankini by Kansas City designer Helen Jon.
If you have a larger bust, this one-piece is or you! This full-cup suit covers it all and offers support. The seam detail shows off curves in just the right way. Jets Optima D Cup Mia.
If you have the body for a bikini, but you still want some coverage, this two-piece is simple and sophisticated. Robin Piccone bikini.
High-waisted and fuller-cut bikini bottoms also are on-trend this season. Not only do they eliminate the problem of feeling too “skimpy” at the pool, but they will hide C-section scars or flaws through your mid-section. The bralette top fits cup sizes A–DD. Spot On Bikini by Seafolly.
When there are days you just don’t feel like sporting your swimsuit at the pool, you can never go wrong with an amazing coverup. Jets Adorn white tunic with tassels and embroidery.
