EDITOR’S NOTE

HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY! Ahhh, May. We finally made it! This month is one of my favorites because we celebrate graduations, Mother’s Day, weddings, school being out, and ... the pools opening. As a mom, I do appreciate the one day of the year when I can kick up my heels, relax, and leave the laundry-folding and other chores to my family. Although, I prefer to spend the day with my husband and kids. We typically do brunch at one of my favorite spots and then visit the Country Club Plaza for some spring shopping. (It’s after that shopping trip when I usually do need a nap!) It’s good being a mom. But it’s really all about the kids this month as we try to keep them busy and safe over the summer. Which makes this the perfect time to create or update your home safety plan. Check out the Home & Garden article on page 30 about how to come up with a safety plan should a crisis occur in your home. You can never be too careful, especially if your kids are old enough to be home alone during the day. For all you moms out there, we at SIMPLYkc Magazine wish you a relaxing Mother’s Day!

FAVORITE PLACE TO EAT IN KC If I’m on the run, I tend to pick up Joe’s KC’s pairing of Z-Man sandwiches, which my wife tends to favor, and a Chickie Z for me (the healthier option when it comes to barbecue). For a sit-down dinner, I frequent Port Fonda. I love Mexican food, and their fish specials are the best in town, in my opinion. FAVORITE DRINK IN KC Hi-Dive is the place I tend to go and de-stress. The service is always quick and it’s just the right amount of busy all of the time. FAVORITE PLACE TO SHOP IN KC My wife would say any hardware store. It seems like most weekends I’m coming back home with a new project idea. My next favorite place is the West Bottoms for antique shopping. FAVORITE HIDDEN GEMS IN KC Not sure if it’s so hidden anymore, but the Green Lady Lounge feels like what nostalgic KC would be. It doesn’t hurt that it’s also a block away from The Rockhill Grille. FAVORITE PLACES TO TAKE OUT-OF-TOWN GUESTS I usually give guests the scenic tour of all the historic architecture in this town. I don’t think people realize how many iconic buildings and places you can see for free in this town. FAVORITE PLACE TO EAT IN KC It was Houston’s until the end of January. The food and service took me there a few times a week. I love eating at the bar at Port Fonda. The chicken enchiladas are amazing and go down great with a Pacifico. Joe’s Kansas City will always be my go-to for a Chicken Z-Man and fries. FAVORITE DRINK IN KC I’m very simple when it comes to drinks: a cold Miller Lite at Hi-Dive Lounge. FAVORITE PLACE TO SHOP IN KC I live on the Plaza, so most of my shopping is done there. Charlie Hustle, Baldwin, and J. Crew are staples in my wardrobe. FAVORITE HIDDEN GEMS IN KC I absolutely love the character and burgers at Town Topic. The Ship is a great bar in the West Bottoms. The Oak Room (at the InterContinental) is a fun place to unwind on a weekend night with live music. FAVORITE PLACES TO TAKE OUT-OF-TOWN GUESTS I’m a huge sports guy and so are most of my guests from out of town, so I enjoy showing off The K and Arrowhead, The Plaza for food and shopping, and Top Golf for some active fun.

Spa owner Anna Sorkin is ready to help you de-stress and re-energize at Ultimate Escape Day Spa.

ESCAPE FROM DAILY STRESSES AT ULTIMATE ESCAPE DAY SPA

L

ife happens for all of us. That’s why Anna Sorkin takes so much pride in making sure each person who visits Ultimate Escape Day Spa leaves happy, relaxed, and feeling great. Yes, offering the highest quality services and products goes a long way to help clients de-stress and re-energize, but it’s all the special little touches that she says really set Ultimate Escape apart from other spa experiences. “Our vision has always been to create a home-away-from-home atmosphere

for our guests, and we continue to improve on that,” says Sorkin, spa owner. “I am so passionate about what we do here — it’s very rewarding knowing that people leave here and go back to their day-to-day lives feeling refreshed and renewed.” Contributing to the warm, relaxed atmosphere are Himalayan salt lamps and candles. Upon arrival you receive a warm neck pillow and are offered fruit water or hot tea to help melt away stress. “Anna is an ideal spa owner,” says regular client Mary Pickett. “The personal attention to detail exceeds expecta-

tions by a mile. Plus, she has years of experience in specific spa services and knows what it takes to hire and train successful people.” Sorkin has always been naturally drawn toward helping people. Her degree path in college was psychology. She’d intended to counsel families and couples, but after getting pregnant during school, she and her husband decided she would stay home with the baby while he worked. When it was time to go back to school, she remembered another passion of hers: esthetics. “I started going to an esthetician when I was 12, getting regular facials, and I was fascinated by the transformation of my skin,” she says. “I knew this would be a great career path for me.” After completing the esthetics program at Johnson County Community College 17 years ago, Sorkin worked a few dermatologist and plastic surgeon offices before landing a job at Ultimate Escape. Every day, she honed her esthetic skills and learned more about running a business. It wasn’t long before she began to dream of owning her own spa one day.

Head-to-toe services at Ultimate Escape include everything from chemical peels and makeup application to pedicures and manicures. Facial treatments are customized for each individual, and range from treatments for acne, tightening, brightening, hyperpigmentation/ melasma, and more.

Ultimate Escape Day Spa now offers referral and loyalty programs. New clients who sign up on the website receive 15 percent off a service. The spa also offers new local skin- and body-care lines,

“I love to help people improve their skin, I love to help empower others through improved self-esteem, and I love to just lend an ear.” A variety of massage therapies ensure your unique needs are met. Swedish, deep-tissue, hot-stone, prenatal, and myofascial release are just some of the offerings. The most popular massage is the spa’s “Swe-Deep,” which includes 60 minutes of a Swedish, full-body massage, with 30 minutes of deep tissue work focusing on specific areas of concern. New services at the spa include cupping (made popular by swimmers at the Olympics last year) and Reiki, a hands-on approach to healing through energy work.

She dreamed for nine years, one day mentioning to the owner that she’d be interested in buying the business if the owner were ever to sell. Six months ago, her dream became a reality when she was given the chance to buy the spa. “I love what I do — everything about it,” Sorkin shares. “I love to help people improve their skin, I love to help empower others through improved self-esteem, and I love to just lend an ear. It’s all so rewarding. Being able to make a difference is extremely important to me.”

go, and I know it’s a great investment in my body.”

including organic ones such as SKIN and Mixture. Locally made Lake and Shine candles are also for sale. And Sorkin recently introduced the world-famous, highly researched Image line, which includes stem cells, peptides, retinols, AHA/BHAs, and more. Sorkin is enthusiastic about staying on top of the latest in esthetics to ensure clients have the best experience possible. She’s dedicated to her growth both as a business owner and as a human being to better serve her clients.

“I try to live each day to the fullest, and am thankful for everything I’ve been given,” Sorkin says. “I am honored to be part of this industry with a goal to create a positive, peaceful, beautiful world. Life definitely has its ups and downs, but I am grateful for every moment of it.” Client Becky Tinker says just the thought of her appointment at Ultimate Escape Day Spa instantly relaxes her. “Massage, waxing, facials ... I’ve never had a bad experience here,” Tinker says. “I love to

KACIE HOW TO DEAL WITH FLAKY FRIENDS

I have a friend whose

Every friend group has the flaky friend. Whether it’s changing

times, completely canceling plans, or pulling a no-show, flaky

Recently, she changed our “plans” to get together from Tuesday to Monday to Wednesday. How do I spend time with her without feel“ ing shuffled around?

friends are a delicate situation. The best way to tackle this is by defining what kind of flake your friend is. If she’s constantly busy, give her a chance and be patient. Very honestly explain to your friend that you understand she’s busy, but you’d prefer to know ahead of time if she can’t make it rather than five minutes before. My next question is where are you trying to meet up? There’s a good chance your friend might be a bit of an introvert — hanging out in public situations might overwhelm her. You might suggest a change in plans where you get to spend time at one another’s home. The last type of flake would be one who is simply indifferent. This person, frankly, doesn’t care that she’s putting you out. At this point, it’s time to reconsider the friendship. If she simply doesn’t care about your time, is this a friendship you really want to continue? Try holding off on making plans to see if your friend reaches out to you first.

If you have any questions you’d like Kacie to answer, submit them to our managing editor at: ashley@simplykcmag.com.

A STAYCATION STATE OF MIND You don’t need mountains or beaches to go on vacation. Kansas City knows how to put on a show for a stranger. You can step inside history at Union Station, scream down a roller coaster at Worlds of Fun, catch a foul ball from one of the Kansas City’s Royals at Kauffman Stadium, or shop at the beautiful Country Club Plaza. But when you live in Kansas City, you’ve seen it all. You can still kick back, relax, and be an outsider in these quick KC daytrip hot spots. Sometimes being a visitor in your own state is the best vacation there is.

HUTCHINSON, KANSAS

The Cosmosphere International SciEd Center and Space Museum cosmo.org

Hutchinson, Kansas, is a three-hour drive from Kansas City but once you’re there, you can’t get any closer to space. The Cosmosphere International SciEd Center & Space Museum includes a collection of U.S. space artifacts second only to the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum. One of the most popular exhibits includes the Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird. This spy plane is still the world’s fastest and reaches speeds of 2,200 mph. The Apollo 13 command module,

Odyssey, flown by astronauts Jim Lovell, Fred Haise, and Jack Swigert is also on display. The Cosmosphere helped recover and fully restore the capsule in 1996. The Academy-Award nominated film “Hidden Figures” is a true story based off African-American women’s integral part in the American Mercury space program, and the Cosmosphere is home to numerous Mercury program artifacts. Another place to check out in Hutchinson: The Strataca Underground Salt Museum. The restored salt mine houses all the movies in Disney’s vault, including a vast amount of original Hollywood movies. Millions of documents and items from all over the world are held in this secure and environmentally conducive environment. Find more info at underkansas.org.

EXCELSIOR SPRINGS, MISSOURI Wine and Culinary Trolley Tours estrolley.com The name Excelsior Springs alone tells its own story. The town was built on the site of a mineral water spring that some say have medicinal properties. Whether the natural spring waters running below has magical powers — that’s for you to decide. And your decision can be made on a trolley.

The trolley season returns to Excelsior Springs for its third year. The Excelsior Springs Chamber of Commerce hosts two popular tours — the wine and culinary trolley tours. The tours are expected bring a record-breaking number of visitors this year. Each trolley can accommodate up to 28 guests. The wine trolley tour includes brunch paired with wine. The trolley will stop by three additional wine venues with a full wine-tasting experience at each. You’ll receive a souvenir bag to accommodate any bottles of wine you buy while there. The wine tour makes its final stop in downtown Excelsior Springs. The culinary trolley tour includes culinary “small plates” paired with an adult beverage at each of the three stops. The tour also includes a stop at the historic Elms Hotel and Spa.

Another event to check out in Excelsior Springs: The annual Excelsior Springs Wine Festival, taking place from 2 to 8 p.m. Saturday, June 17. You’ll have an opportunity to sample all varieties of local wines, learn wine-making methods, and speak directly with the winery owners who have made Missouri famous in the American wine market. CREATE A HOME SAFETY PLAN BEFORE YOU NEED TO USE IT

L

ike insurance, a home safety plan is something you hope you never have to use. But if a situation does require you to use it, a safety plan really could mean life or death. According the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), only one third of families have developed and practiced a home fire escape plan, even though it’s vital to protecting you and your family. Here are some ways to make sure your family is safe in case a crisis occurs in your home.

Create a plan. The first step to having a plan is creating it. Emergencies happen, even if we do everything to prevent them. This is why you should make sure everyone has the knowledge and tools available when an emergency happens. “Sit down as a family and make a bird’s eye view of the house,” says Tricia Roberts, public education specialist from the Overland Park Fire Department. “Designate two ways out of the house, establish where the outside meeting place will be, and then take that plan and walk through the home as a family and make sure it will work.” Roberts recommends you run through at least two fire drills. “Have one in the daytime when everyone is awake, and then have a second fire drill at night when the family is sleeping just to make sure everyone wakes up to the alarm.” You can download escape planning grids from many plac-

30

| SIMPLYKCMAG.COM

es, including nfpa.org. If you have kids in the house, you should sit down with them and use an escape planning grid or floor plan to show them two exits out of each room and two exits out of the house.

Once you’re outside, stay there. If a fire occurs in your home, it’s important everyone knows they cannot re-enter the home. “Once you make it out, you stay out and call the fire department from there,” Roberts says. The NFPA’s website explains that fire can spread rapidly through your home, leaving you as little as one or two minutes to escape safely once the alarm sounds. If you re-enter your home, the fire may have engulfed areas you did not expect, blocking possible exit points.

Have a working alarm system. An alarm system is a must for your home. Fire alarms and carbon monoxide alarms are simple to install and maintain. If you or your kids are heavy sleepers, hard-of-hearing, or deaf, there are alternatives to traditional fire alarms. “There are smoke alarms that will still beep, but parents can program their voice into the alarm,” Roberts explains. “A lot of kids respond much better to that than just the beeping. For people who are deaf or hard-of-hearing, alarms will activate strobe lights or shake the bed and notify people that way.”

Yes.

Remove potential hazards. Removing common household hazards helps prevent emergencies from happening. Cooking, smoking, and household wiring are common causes of home fires. Having proper ashtrays and rinsing ashes before disposing of them is helpful. “Maybe you have a second fridge out in the garage and for convenience of location, you’ve plugged it in with an extension cord. That would be a fire hazard,” Roberts shares. “Those should be plugged directly into the outlet. Extension cords are not intended to be permanent wiring.” And, she notes, if there are loose connections or an outlet that is hot to the touch, you should replace these immediately. Your kitchen can be a potential hazard too. The stove and the oven are wonderful tools, but should be monitored while in use. Don’t leave your kitchen while cooking, make sure to keep your kitchen free of clutter that may catch fire on your burner, and regularly clean excess grease from the burners.

Take an emergency safety class. Most local fire departments offer classes in emergency preparedness. These classes can educate you about ways to avoid potential hazards as well as give you the opportunity to ask questions. “Classes are offered all the time,” says Roberts. “Most fire departments have someone who can come out and teach a class. You can call me and I am happy to teach a class to your church group, home association, or business.”

9 WAYS TO NATURALLY REDUCE TOXINS

T

oxins are as much a part of our world as cellphones and drinking water. In fact, much of our water contains toxins that we ingest daily. “There are toxins in pretty much everything we use, from beauty supplies to lotion to water,” explains Heather Klepfer, wellness marketing consultant and health and wellness coach at Max Life Body. “Hair products, cleaning products, soap, food, laundry detergent, and just about anything with preservatives all have toxins in them.” So what are we to do when our world is so saturated with toxins? Here are some simple ways to reduce toxins in your life while still having a life.

32

| SIMPLYKCMAG.COM

1. Pay attention to where your food comes from. Avoiding canned foods, bottled liquids, plants grown with pesticides, and animals grown with hormones can decrease the levels of toxins in your body. “You should eat as organic as possible. Stay away from processed foods,” says Laura Christine, detox program manager at Midwest Myofascial Release Center. “Junk food is a big source of toxins.” Staying away from all processed foods can seem like an insurmountable goal. But simply choosing to reduce the amount of processed foods you eat will help. 2. Pay attention to where your makeup comes from. Makeup can be a daily source of chemicals and toxins. Buying natural makeup can

improve your skin and eliminate a constant source of toxins. 3. Exercise regularly. Your body naturally flushes toxins. Exercising regularly will encourage your body to increase good, naturally occurring chemicals while eliminating the harmful ones. “Take time to exercise,” Christine says. “Lack of exercise affects your immune system.” 4. Reduce stress levels. You may be your own source of toxins. Stress creates harmful toxins in your body, encouraging a difficult cycle to escape. If you’re stressed out, you’re harming your health in a number of ways. Avoiding stressors or finding ways to take your mind off stressful situations will lower the levels of toxins in your body. Medi-

tation, rest, exercise, mindfulness, or relaxing hobbies can improve your levels of toxins. 5. Eliminate poor eating habits. If you are not intentional about your eating habits, you may develop poor habits. Relying on fast food, eating irregularly, or eating late at night all can be harmful to your body. “You may eat on the go a couple times, but over the course of a few months it becomes a habit and obviously impacts your health negatively,” Klepfer explains. 6. Get healthy amounts of sleep. Every person’s body requires a certain amount of sleep to stay healthy. You may be able to function on much less sleep, but you’re also introducing toxins into your body by not getting a full night’s rest. “Don’t drink anything after about 8 p.m. so you are not getting up in the middle of the night,” Christine advises. “Let your body unwind for about an hour before bed — don’t turn on the TV or stare at your phone and don’t eat.” 7. Watch the household cleaning products. Household cleaning products are a veritable well of toxins. From Palmolive dish soap to Ajax laundry detergent, each has its own set of toxins harmful to your body. Some products even contain well-known toxins such as formaldehyde. Common household cleaning items that contain toxins include toilet-bowl cleaners, air fresheners, laundry detergents, floor cleaners, all-purpose cleaners, stain removers, oven cleaners, and dish liquids. Fortunately, there are natural alternatives to many of these products, such as using items commonly found in your kitchen like filtered water, vinegar, and baking soda. The Environmental Working Group (ewg.org) and the Breast Cancer Fund (breastcancerfund.org) are invaluable sources for identifying harmful cleaning products and determining alternatives. 8. Embrace moderation. When attempting to reduce toxins in your body, moderation is the best method. “You don’t have to go to extremes,” Christine explains. “Just make a choice once a day to have a salad instead of a burger.” Even something as small as that can reduce toxins. 9. Educate yourself. “Education is the best way to improve negative behaviors,” Klepfer says. “Once you see and adapt to the healthy change, it gets adopted into your lifestyle.”

BEAUTY

Written by Melanie Knopke

2. Cheeks

Bowles’ secret to a sheer, natural glow and flush of color is cream blush. She suggests using Glossier-brand cloud paint, which comes in four shades that work for any skin tone. The pillowy, gel-cream formula is designed to be the most user-friendly cheek color in existence. If you can finger paint, you can Cloud Paint. Simply dab it onto your cheeks. ($18, glossier.com)

3. Face

Fresh, clean skin is the look of the season, Bowles says. She recommends using a great tinted moisturizer with concealer where you need it. Her favorite product is Face Atelier ultra foundation, which is as sheer as tinted moisturizer and has buildable coverage for problem areas. ($52, faceatelier.com)

4. Color

Soft blush colors everything this spring, Bowles notes. You can use this shade on your eyes, lips, and cheeks. The color she recommends is Glossier’s Cloud Paint in dusk and puff. ($18, glossier.com)

ith the change of seasons it’s always good to give your beauty regimen and products a little refresh. I spoke with Heidi Bowles, Kansas City commercial, TV, and editorial makeup artist, to get her top five favorite trends for the spring. Her main rule of thumb? Natural and fresh is the look of the season. Love the skin you’re in!

1. Brows

Bowles suggests a groomed yet natural brow. Try to avoid over-worked and over-drawn brows. To achieve this natural look, she recommends Glossier brand “Brow Boy.” The creamy wax formula is inspired by traditional hair pomade for a soft, flexible hold that doesn’t stiffen or flake and keeps your brows perfectly in place. ($16, glossier.com)

Try strobing instead of contouring. Strobing involves putting bright highlights on the areas of your face where the light naturally hits to create an illuminated complexion. Those areas include the tops of your cheekbones, temples, center of your nose, and on the cupid’s bow. When you do this, you highlight your strengths instead of worrying about trying to hide your flaws. To achieve this look, Bowles likes to use Joeur powder highlighter. ($24, nordstrom.com)

PARENTING

Written by Deborah Eakin Osborne

TAKING IT TO THE STREETS ... MAYBE: BICYCLE SAFETY FOR KIDS

A

lthough it’s been awhile (OK, a very long while), I vividly remember learning how to ride a two-wheeler bicycle (as opposed to a tricycle) when I was in kindergarten. My bike was blue, my favorite color. I’m pretty sure it had a bell. The one thing I absolutely remember about my new bicycle was that it was missing a set of training wheels. You see, my dad’s philosophy was to learn on two wheels only, right from the get-go, rather than become dependent on an extra set of wheels and never complete the transition from trike to bike. The house we lived in at the time

42

| SIMPLYKCMAG.COM

had a long driveway leading to the garage in the back. Our house was on one side of the driveway, our neighbors’ on the other. My dad would give me a big push to get me started and … I’d most often wind up in the neighbors’ large hydrangea bushes. After enough crashes, bumps, bruises, and scrapes, I declared I was never going to ride my bike until I was “a teenager,” which, to a 5-year-old, seemed a lifetime away. Decades later, while on a visit, my dad offered to teach my son the “proper” way to ride a bike. Naturally, I was skeptical. But, he reassured me he’d adopted a new

method that would end with more successes and fewer crashes. Truth be told, I think he was looking for a second chance; a way to somehow undo my childhood biking trauma. A bit reluctantly, I agreed. Happily, his new method was a success! I was relieved, my dad felt vindicated, and my son was on his way to greater independence. May is National Bike Month, which makes it a great time to plan a trip around the neighborhood — maybe even hit one of the many bike trails in the metro. Whether your child is just learning to ride or has been biking for years, reviewing a few general safety tips before getting

out there will help minimize the risk of serious injury and maximize enjoyment of this healthy, lifelong activity. Check out these tips:

Choose and maintain a size-appropriate bicycle. Injuries occur more frequently among kids riding bicycles that are too big for them. Check the brakes and tire pressure on a regular basis, and repair damaged parts such as wheels, spokes, or handlebars before your child rides again.

Always wear a helmet. According to the Children’s Mercy Hospital website, 5- to 14-year olds have a higher rate of bicycle injuries than older riders. Face and head injuries are the most severe for bicyclists. Helmets effectively reduce the risk of serious head injury or death resulting from bicycle accidents. Involving your child in the selection of a properly fitted helmet and encouraging personalization (such as adding favorite stickers) — along with wearing a helmet yourself — may help increase compliance.

Set rules age-appropriate rules for your child. One study found that kids riding in their own neighborhoods sustained the same severity of injuries as older kids using the bicycle as a means of transportation. Most injuries to younger children were the result of errors they’d made. Kids frequently lack the skills needed to ride on the street until age 10. Even after this age, you should periodically assess your child’s skills.

GOOD TASTES

Written by Gina Reardon | Photo by Kyndall Durkee

INDULGE IN DECADENT STRAWBERRY GOODNESS THIS SUMMER Once May graces us with her warm sunny days, strawberries begin to appear at local markets. Their scent is intoxicating. Their taste, pure strawberry. While satisfying on their own, strawberries make desserts extra special with their vibrant color and sweetness. Strawberry Napoleons are the perfect grand finale to any memorable occasion!

Strawberry Napoleons Serves 6

Ingredients

Directions

6 ounces cream cheese, room temperature

Preheat the oven to 375°F. Using an electric mixer, beat the cream cheese, 1/4 cup powdered sugar, and vanilla in a medium bowl until fluffy. Using the same beaters, beat the whipping cream in another medium bowl until peaks form. Fold whipped cream into cream cheese mixture in 3 additions. Cover mousse and refrigerate.

3/4 cup powdered sugar, divided 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 2/3 cup chilled whipping cream 1 sheet frozen puff pastry (half of 17.3-ounce package), thawed

Roll out the pastry sheet on a lightly floured surface to a 14 by 10-1/2-inch rectangle. Cut the sheet into 12 3-1/2-inch squares. Pierce squares all over with fork. Sift 1/4 cup powdered sugar over the squares. Place the squares on an ungreased baking sheet. Bake for 12 minutes. Using a metal spatula, flatten the squares and continue baking until they are crisp and brown, about 5 minutes longer. Cool the pastry squares on the sheet.

2 pints strawberries, rinsed and sliced 1/4 cup sugar 1/2 vanilla bean, seeds scraped 2 tablespoons chopped tarragon Fresh mint (optional)

While the pastry squares are cooling, combine berries with sugar, vanilla bean seeds, and fresh tarragon and toss to coat. Place 6 pastry squares on your work surface. Spread each with 1/4 cup mousse. Top with berries. Cover with remaining pastry squares. Dust Napoleons with remaining 1/4 cup powdered sugar. Place Napoleons on plates. Serve with remaining berries, and garnish with fresh mint.

THINGS TO DO BEFORE

48

| SIMPLYKCMAG.COM

Your Kids Are Out of School

1

MAKE A PLAN FOR SUMMER ACTIVITIES.

2

SET GOALS FOR THE SUMMER.

3

DOUBLECHECK ALL YOUR SUMMER EQUIPMENT.

4

CHECK IN WITH YOUR CHILD’S TEACHER.

5

PREPARE SOME AT-HOME ACTIVITIES.

6

COMPILE A LIST OF SITTERS & LAST-MINUTE PLAY FRIENDS.

7

MAKE SOME TIME FOR YOURSELF.

Start a list of all the things your entire family wants to do over the summer and group them to help organize your summer to-do list.

If you’ve ever looked back on the summer and wished you’d accomplished more, consider setting some personal and family goals, such as making time for your own hobbies and spending more time having fun as a family.

Replace expired sunscreen, invest in bug-repellant, inflate bike tires and sports balls, clean your pool toys, check your first-aid kit, and prep an “outdoor bag” that’s ready to go at any moment.

Ask if there are any areas your kid needs to work on during the summer and what types of fun activities you can do to help.

You know there will be days when it’s too hot to go out. You’ll be glad you’re prepared for those moments when your kids remind you every five minutes that they’re booooored.

This will come in handy if you have a work project come up, you want a date night, or you simply need a break from the kids.

Whether that includes lunch with a friend or a shopping trip by yourself, make some “me time” while you still can.
