EDITOR’S NOTE

MELANIE’S MUST-HAVES

Written by Melanie Knopke | Photos by Ruthie Stark

HELLO, SUMMER! KC T-shirt, Sew KC, 11529 Ash St., Leawood, KS

Summer is officially in full swing. The kids are out of school, the pools are open, the nights are longer, and the days are warmer. It makes me want to grab some friends, pop a bottle of rosé, and sit on the patio at Aixois Bistro in Crestwood.

Raen Sunglasses, Ulah, 4707 Rainbow Blvd., Westwood, KS

For many parents, summer can be stressful. It’s hard to find child care or fill up the 12-hour days with the kids at home. But I really try to savor every moment. I love the lazy mornings and just hanging at the pool — letting my kids be kids. Speaking of pools, we have an amazing swimwear spread, starting on page 20, in this issue featuring Nani Nalu Swimwear Boutique. You can find suits for every body type there. Good luck leaving with just one!

Madison has an impeccable eye, and a keen attention to detail that makes each of her events one-of-a-kind and spectacular.

WHERE: FAVORITE PLACE TO EAT IN KC I’ll convince my girlfriends, husband, and family to join me at Westside Local any chance I can get. I love their kale salad with chicken and their sauvignon blanc is tasty! Tucked at the corner of 17th and Summit in the Westside area, the atmosphere is intimate and perfect for getting caught up in conversation. With my office in the Crossroads, I do also love popping into Rockhill Grille for lunch — you have to try the tater tots! FAVORITE DRINK IN KC I’m a sucker for a great patio with a view, so enjoying a cocktail at Trezo Mare does it for me! I love the view of downtown from the north side. All of Trezo Mare’s cocktails are delicious, but I am particularly fond of the pineapple jalepeño mojito. Should you find me on a weekday morning rushing from meeting to meeting, you’ll likely see me with a Thou Mayest coffee in hand. FAVORITE PLACE TO SHOP IN KC My favorite shop to get lost in is Mary Carol Garrity’s Nell Hills. There are fabulous pillows, knick-knacks, gifts, furniture … and don’t get me started on those gorgeous fabrics. Nell Hills’ displays are always unique and inspiring, and there is so much to explore around every corner. FAVORITE HIDDEN GEMS IN KC If you’re looking to fill a weekend afternoon and enjoy being outdoors, I highly recommend the new Chicken N’ Pickle in North Kansas City. There are activities for all ages and plenty of seating to relax and enjoy the weather, a beverage, and time spent with friends. For the livemusic lovers, I recommend The Majestic’s basement jazz club. FAVORITE PLACES TO TAKE OUT-OF-TOWN GUESTS Is there anything like the KC spirit displayed at Kauffman Stadium? With so many recent enhancements to the stadium and a contagious positive energy, KC visitors get a full dose of our Midwest hospitality in this iconic spot! After supporting the boys in blue, you’ve got to treat your guests to some Jack Stack Barbecue, followed by a sweet treat at Betty Rae’s in Waldo.

Regardless of age or position in life, a beautiful healthy smile can be a definite game changer! People want to look their best and they want their teeth to function at an optimum level.” Dr. Headley has been creating beautiful smiles for more than 20 years! dental crystal ball,” Dr. Headley says. “Seeing how you can look before you actually have cosmetic dental procedures is a great advantage in helping to make that decision. We never show any change that’s not possible. Whether a patient is seeking a simple tooth whitening procedure or a beautiful Hollywood smile, chances are their dental dreams can come true.”

YOUR SMILE SAYS IT ALL

So what exactly is cosmetic dentistry? Dr. Headley defines it as any dental procedure that improves the appearance of a tooth. Sometimes, it is one tooth while other times, it is a full smile. By combining art and science with advanced dental technology, a drab smile can be turned into a dramatic one. Proce-

dures can change the shape, color, and contour of teeth. “People often ask if I am a real dentist,” he says. “The answer is, of course, yes. You have to be a good

Cosmetic dentist Ross Headley, of KC Smile, has transformed hundreds of smiles in the KC metro.

I

t’s no secret that cosmetic dentistry can transform even the plainest of smiles into exceptionally beautiful ones, but many people don’t realize the power of the smile. While cosmetic dentistry cannot actually change people, it does change their level of self-confidence, self-esteem, and consequently, their interactions with others. It can make the difference in whether they go for a job promotion, seek a relationship, or become motivated for self-improvement.

According to Dr. Ross Headley, DDS, of KC Smile, while many of his clients are in professions that require a nearly perfect smile, most are noncelebrities who just want to look healthy, grow professionally, and feel great about themselves. “I’m not saying it is fair or a good thing,” Dr. Headley says, “but the reality is that we have become a society that instantly judges people on their looks. Experts tell us we have seven seconds to make a first impression. Teeth play a big role in that first impression.”

Most patients seeking consultations with Dr. Headley understand the importance of a great smile but aren’t always certain what procedures will work for them. He says it’s important to have realistic expectations. And he uses a communication tool for that purpose.

According to Christina Stratton ,who has held many titles including Most Photogenic at Miss USA Teen 2015, says her beautiful smile gave her added confidence in pageants and in life. “I love to smile and knowing my teeth are perfect allows me to smile without hesitation. Dr. Headley designed the perfect look for me.”

Using digital software, you can see your smile transformed in minutes. You even get to take a photo home of your simulated new smile to show your family. “I think of it as having a

than a general dentist. Whether a patient wants a purely cosmetic change or needs a full-mouth reconstruction, the skillset of the dentist is key. While Dr. Headley treats many cosmetic patients, he also has a large general dentistry practice and offers all dental-hygiene services. His patients range in age from 3 to 101. More than half of his staff members have worked with him since 1995. “We have great professional chemistry.” Dr. Headley says. “ We work well together. I could not do what I do every day without my talented, exceptional staff. Patients will move away and come back to the area after several years to find the same staff is still here. They are thrilled.” Dr. Headley offers free consultations complete with cosmetic imaging and any X-rays and impressions that necessary for diagnosis. Her nickname is Kansas City’s castle. And it’s easy to see why — she’s impossible to ignore. Much of Kansas City’s history is told within her walls. Her stories go back to 1914. You could even say her story started in 1910 when the prominent Chicago architect, Jarvis Hunt, was asked by Kansas City to “make a monument.” A monument is exactly what Hunt created. Union Station can’t send you back in time, but Union Station’s free “Living History” app can bring you close. Once you’ve downloaded the app on your phone, you will be pointed to 11 famous stops. You can step in the same spot President Harry Truman stopped for a brief interview with reporters before he was elected into office. Walt Disney came through Union Station, as well as Ernest Hemingway. You can also watch Art and Rosemary, a husband and wife, meet each other under the infamous clock after World War II.

When you arrive at Union Station — either by Amtrak train, the KC Streetcar, or your own car — it sets the stage to make your own history. There’s always something to do and memories to be made at Kansas City’s Union Station.

Mark your calendar now — Aug. 21, 2017, at approximately 1 p.m. Our giant light in the sky will be turned off under a solar eclipse. A new moon will block out the sun for a few minutes, throwing a 70-mile moon-shadow across the U.S. Kansas City is under the direct path of what scientists call “totality.” Stand anywhere under that shadow and broad daylight turns into night. The stars will come out. The birds will fall silent and the nighttime creatures will wake up.

Mummies of the World One of the biggest lures of Union Station are the traveling exhibits in The Bank of America Gallery. This summer brings the newest exhibit: Mummies of the World.

ignore it. Union Station’s planetarium received recent state-of-the-art 4-D technology that puts Kansas City on the map in terms of astronomy. You don’t have to wait until Aug. 21 to see the daylight fall black. The Planetarium can bring the night sky to you on any day. An Aug. 21 watch-party at Union Station’s new outdoor Haverty Family Yards doesn’t sound like a bad place to watch it from. After all, the science behind it is just a few steps away.

Maker Faire

It’s called “the greatest show and tell” on Earth. From June 24 to 25, Union Station will host Maker Faire: Kansas City. Crowds will pour into all parts of Union Station and, “how did you come up with that?” or “I wish I

thought of that” will be the topics of the weekend. Maker Faire is a gathering of people that make things — it’s not a craft show (although it can be). It’s tinkering and innovating at the grassroots level of creation. Makers can range in age from 6 to 96. It’s not just rows of booths; it’s activities and interaction for the whole family. Kansas City is an innovation hub — we like to innovate and be inspired. Union Station is the perfect spot to check out the Maker Faire, part science fair and part county fair. We all know Union Station can put on a show. It’s how memories are made at Kansas City’s castle. Find more info about Union Station events at unionstation.org.

You may not know what a gua or a bagua is, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t affecting your life right now. “Feng Shui affects every single aspect of your life whether you realize it or not, whether you practice it or not, whether you pay it any attention or not,” says Robyn Stevens, Feng Shui expert and owner of Robyn Stevens Feng Shui (robynstevensfengshui. com) in Lenexa. “It’s happening.”

30

| SIMPLYKCMAG.COM

What is Feng Shui? A gua (or one of nine life categories) and bagua (how those categories are arranged) are part of the ancient Chinese practice of Feng Shui (pronounced fung shway). Feng Shui is a system of harmonizing oneself with the surrounding environment. This surrounding environment may be your home, your workspace, or your yard. “Feng Shui means that how you live in a space — the stuff you have, where you put that stuff, and how you decorate — directly impacts your life in every way: your finances, your love life, relationships with family and friends, your career, your reputation, your health. Everything,” Stevens explains. If you struggle in a certain area of your life, Stevens says chances are you could benefit from evaluating your space and how it is affecting you. “If there are areas of life not working and you just can’t get traction, there is probably

something in your home that’s out of balance. For the most part, it’s not where you live. It’s how you live while you are there.”

What should you do? If Feng Shui impacts our lives whether we practice it or not, what are some simple steps we can take to make sure it impacts us positively? First, you must evaluate what you would like to impact positively. Your space can be divided into nine life categories (or guas): 1. Prosperity and abundance 2. Fame and reputation 3. Love and relationships 4. Family 5. Health 6. Children and creativity 7. Skills and knowledge 8. Career 9. Helpful people and travel

You may do as little as picking up the shoes scattered in the entryway or as much as replacing furniture or repainting a wall. According to Feng Shui, all of these steps can improve your life in ways that will affect you outside your home. “Often, simple environmental changes can lead to huge life shifts,” she says. “When your home is clean, organized, and you surround yourself with things you love — things that make you happy, colors that make your heart sing — you are much more likely to attract a happy, healthy, and abundant life.”

“One of the most important things to remember is that your intention has an enormous impact on whatever you do,” Stevens shares. “It’s important to be clear about what you want to achieve.” If you want a healthier or more stable relationship, you can work on the love and relationships gua. If you would like a better-paying or more satisfying job, work on the career gua.

The secret to bringing a person from a “needs eyeglasses” to “wants eyeglasses” is custom-making eyeglasses in-house. The glasses are made in the same building you purchase them from. The result is comfort, style, a fast turn-around, and a two-year manufacturer’s warranty. “I guarantee I’ll take your prescription — even the higher power ones — and your new eyeglasses will be the lightest and thinnest you’ve ever had in a frame,” Beznovsky adds. “It will accommodate your face better and you will wear them all the time. It will become a fashion accessory. It will be a conversation piece.” Romanelli Optix offers luxury brands from Europe you typically won’t find at an optometrist’s office. Top-of-theline brands such as Cartier and Chanel can only be carried at Romanelli Optix because of their exclusivity. European brands are in high demand because Europe stays ahead of the curve when it comes to fashion. The technology allows European brands to incorporate better materials, like titanium or sheet metal.

on frames. Many styles of the past, such as round frames, are coming back in the limelight. Colors and full plastic frames

“Eyeglasses should be something you want to wear — not something you have to wear.” are popular as well. Eyeglasses should sit flush on the bridge of your nose instead of resting on your cheeks, and your pupils should fall in the center of the frame. The key is getting your eyeglasses to rest softly and comfortably. “We’ve been doing this for decades,” Beznovsky says. “If they’re not going to fit for whatever reason, we will show you ones that will.”

W

hen you meet someone for the first time the first thing you notice is their face. Imagine meeting your future spouse or future best friend because they told you, “Wow, I love your glasses.” The statement on your face would be the only conversation-starter you’d need.

The dedication and experience to giving customers the best eyewear began in 2004. Even though Beznovsky’s first name is Roman, the name Romanelli Optix is coincidental. Romanelli Optix first opened in Romanelli Gardens, an area between Waldo and Brookside. The success drove Beznovsky and his business partner, Felix Milman, to open three additional offices in the Kansas City metro and one more on the Country Club Plaza named Milan Optique. “We put our combined efforts together to create this,” Beznovsky says.

Roman Beznovsky, owner of Romanelli Optix, can’t count how many times he’s heard his customers come back to tell him the eyeglasses he chose started lasting conversations.

“I love it when people tell me, ‘I’ve never had this many compliments before,’” Beznovsky says. “That’s how you build a business. That’s my favorite part. The best testimonial is when my customers tell someone to come here.” People with an eyeglasses prescription in hand have every reason to walk into Romanelli Optix. Eyeglasses correct vision, but Beznovsky sees them as much more than that. In recent years, eyeglasses have become a fashion accessory. “They should be something you want to wear — not something you have to wear,” he says. “And that’s what sets us apart from everyone else.”

they’re important, you won’t lose them,” he explains. “Everyone needs sunglasses, but if they’re ill-fitting, you will lose them.”

Esthetics and comfort also apply to sunglasses — maybe even more so. Romanelli Optix offers just has many sunglasses as they do eyeglasses. The technology in sunglasses has advanced in recent years. “We can put your prescription in any pair of sunglasses frames,”

Romanelli Optix’s retail space boasts a kaleidoscope of vibrant colors matched with clean lines — a metaphor for its philosophy of variety and precision.

The efforts paid off to an eye-catching Kansas City.

Roman Beznovsky (pictured), along with Felix Milman, opened Romanelli Optix in 2004.

The result is eyeglasses that won’t fall apart yet are also fashion-forward. Choosing from one of the hundreds of frames is simple. When you come in for the first time, your own personal tastes and lifestyle will help drive the decision

Beznovsky adds. “That was an impossibility seven to eight years ago. Sunglasses should fit as well as eyeglasses. If you have a comfortable pair of sunglasses, it will change your world. Not only do you need the UV protection around the eyes, but you need them to fit right.”

BE WELL

Written by Jason Bessey, DO, physician at Shawnee Mission Primary Care – Blue Valley

• Close your mouth and inhale quietly through your nose to a mental count of four. • Hold your breath for a count of seven. •E xhale completely through your mouth, making a whoosh sound to a count of eight. This is one breath. Now inhale again and repeat the cycle three more times for a total of four breaths.

2. Stay positive. Remind yourself the stress is only temporary. There’s a great saying: “This, too, shall pass.” Remember this when you feel stress coming, and repeat it over and over.

3. Seek support from others. Remember that it’s OK to lean on others — that’s what our loved ones are for. Talk to friends, family, or find a support group for your particular situation. It’s important to talk to others about what you’re going through. Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Offload tasks to friends, family, co-workers, or a mentor so you can focus on navigating your transition. 4. Exercise and follow a healthy diet. During stressful times, it’s easy to slack on your exercise regimen or overindulge in alcohol, caffeine, or comfort foods. You may not be able to control the stress, but you can control your response to it. Exercise reduces stress hormones and gives you an energy boost. Additionally, loading up on vitamin-packed fruits and vegetables gives your body the nutrients essential for boosting immunity. Lauren and I tried to embrace our time of transition — and knowing the stress was temporary helped. We hope you’ll come visit us at our new location at 159th and 69 Highway!

STEPS TO MANAGING STRESS DURING TRANSITIONS

S

chool is out and summer is officially here! This is a busy time of year, and many of us are likely experiencing transitions — whether preparing for summer break, moving into a new home, or perhaps starting a new job. Unfortunately, stress follows every transition, and it’s important to manage your stress effectively during these periods. My wife, Dr. Lauren Bessey, and I recently put our stress-management skills to use. We recently marked the grand opening of our new practice: Shawnee Mission Primary Care – Overland Park. While we’re very excited to be in our new office space, the transition brought some stress — the moving, the setup, getting to know new technology and equipment, helping our staff adjust, acclimating our patients, and more.

36

| SIMPLYKCMAG.COM

But, the stress was worth it. Our new location offers many unique features, such as modern amenities and a layout tailored to improve the patient experience. Our patient rooms are bigger and designed for comfort, giving more options for seating than just the exam table. We have state-of-theart technology, including monitors in every patient room so we can go over records, health diagrams, and other images and documents in real-time on the screen. The overall design of the space provides added privacy for our patients and our staff, creating separation between the two. Stress can impact your long-term physical and mental health, so it’s important to manage it effectively. Here are a few tips that might help you when experiencing stress during a time of transition:

Our brand new Shawnee Mission Primary Care – Blue Valley office combines modern style and genuine hospitality. The office is located in the Shawnee Mission Health – Overland Park medical office building, near 159th Street & Antioch, in the BluHawk development.

1. Breathe. The 4-7-8 breathing exercise is my favorite technique. It really helps to control your stress response in a matter of minutes. Try it out: •E xhale completely through your mouth, making a whoosh sound.

Jason Bessey, DO, is a physician at Shawnee Mission Primary Care – Blue Valley. Be Lice Free Today!

I SAID SO...

I JUDGED A MOM TODAY I did. I judged another mother. Treat others how you want to be treated. Don’t judge a person before you’ve walked a mile in their shoes. Yeah, I know. I still did it. She wasn’t harming her daughter in any way I could see — other than her tween daughter will hate her in a few years and leave as soon as she’s 18. I’m judging again. I took Emma to the orthodontist. Some parents sit in the reception area and some sit in the extra chairs provided near the dental chairs. I like to sit with Emma and discuss where we should play hooky before taking her back to school. The row of dental chairs are separated by a freestanding frosted-glass window. There’s no privacy. The orthodontist made her rounds. She examined the patient next to Emma. Orthodontist: Oh! Look how nicely these are coming along. Mom: Uh, huh. Can we take them off now? Orthodontist: Oh, she still needs more time. We still need to fix her bite and then we’ll fine-tune. Mom: Can you take them off, please? Orthodontist: We never hold anyone hostage with braces. But I am not recommending this. Her treatment is not complete. Mom: Yes, I know. I would like my daughter to have an imperfect smile. You know? I don’t want her to have perfectly straight teeth. It shows character if her teeth are not perfect.

38

| SIMPLYKCMAG.COM

I looked at Emma. My jaw dropped. I tipped back in my chair to get a better look at the mom and daughter. Emma (whispers): Mom, stop! Me: I want to see them. The daughter — about Emma’s age — stared at her hands in her lap while her mom argued with the orthodontist. Mom: I never wanted her teeth to be straight. I just want them almost straight. Orthodontist: We can take them off today if this is what you and your daughter wish. Please understand the price doesn’t change. Mom: Yes, I know. Please remove them. If I thought this was best for my daughter and it was something she wanted, by all means, judge me. Walk in my shoes. Write about me on your blog. But I have the feeling this wasn’t the daughter’s wish. How long does a parent have control over how their child looks? Even if the daughter wanted straight teeth, she probably wasn’t paying for the braces herself. Braces are a luxury. I’m not sure the daughter ever had a say at all. A parent can somewhat control how a child looks when they’re young. A baby is a little doll you can dress up even if that doll keeps you up all night, shoots yellow poop up the back of the cute outfit you bought from Target, and rips out every hair bow you place on her head. And Emma still won’t let me style her gorgeous curls. When does a parent cross the line? Deciding where bones should be.

Straight but not too-straight teeth? I’m not the greatest mom. I yell at my kids in public. I’m sure I’ve put them in danger by road-raging my way to the grocery store. I rarely watch any gymnastics practices. I’m cool with making chocolate-chip cookies for dinner when Scott’s out of town. I show my daughter it’s OK to eavesdrop and judge others. Emma: Mom? Me: Yeah, Em. Emma: Thanks for letting me keep my braces on. I’m glad you’re not like that other mom. You’re the best.

Patients can come back any time within those 30 days for a free recheck if they feel they’ve been re-exposed. With the mention of exposure, Parker is back to educating. “The earlier you find it, the easier it is to treat and keep from spreading,” she says. Head lice are parasites that feed on blood from the scalp. They are transmitted from head-to-head contact, which

Sleepovers and other close-quarters activities, like sports or summer camp, can be problematic for people of any age. Mikaela Lorino experienced firsthand how difficult controlling lice can be if it’s not treated right away. A couple of years ago, she fought a four-month battle with lice that her daughter brought home. “I spent a crazy amount on prescriptions, but they just kept coming back,” Lorino says. “I found Heartland Healthy Heads one night and called. GOOD TASTES

A Taste of Summer

The sun creeps across the sky and our days lengthen, revealing warm, sunny afternoons with the promise of evenings spent relaxing on porches, patios, and balconies. We may quietly luxuriate in the refreshing sip of a favorite cocktail or seize opportunities to engage with our friends, family, and neighbors in spontaneous happy-hour gatherings, al-fresco fine dining, or casual barbecues. A cool pitcher of a spirited beverage is a perfect way to treat guests to a taste of summer that will dazzle the tastebuds and sing the song of a day worth remembering.

Watermelon Gin Punch

Serves 8

Ingredients

Directions

3 1/2 pounds seedless watermelon, peeled and cut into large chunks

Working in batches if necessary, puree the watermelon in a blender or food processor and press the puree through a mesh strainer. You’ll need about 4 cups of juice — it’s fine if there’s some pulp left. Chill.

1/2 c up freshly squeezed lemon juice, strained 1/2 cup simple syrup*

Put the lemon juice, simple syrup, and mint in a 3-quart serving pitcher or punch bowl and mash the mint thoroughly with a muddler or back of a wooden spoon. Add about 4 cups of ice, the gin, and the watermelon juice, and stir.

8 sprigs fresh mint; more for garnish

Serve in rocks glasses or stemless wine glasses over ice. Garnish with mint sprigs.

2 cups J. Rieger & Co. gin

*To make the simple syrup: Combine equal parts water and granulated sugar in a small saucepan and heat over medium heat until the sugar is dissolved and the liquid is clear. Remove from heat and cool thoroughly.
