PUBLISHER’S NOTE

ADVENTURE AWAITS YOU June 21. Know that date. Love that date. It’s the first day of summer. The start of summer never fails to rekindle my love of this city. From baseball to Boulevardia, sightseeing to soirées, festivals to family time, adventure exists all around us if you know where to look. And with this month’s issue of SIMPLYkc Magazine, you won’t have to go far. We’ve compiled the top five places where you can treat dad for Father’s Day on page 18. It features Boulevardia and baseball, yes, but some outdoor experiences, as well. Or, read about Stems: A Garden Soirée at the Overland Park Arboretum and Botanical Gardens, an annual summer party that benefits the Arts & Recreation Foundation of Overland Park, on page 34. The blossoming gardens are a perfect setting for you and your friends to enjoy two bands, dancers, artists, and delectable bites from more than 25 local restaurants. If you’re looking for something fun and different for the kids — or something you can do together — turn to page 50. Here, you’ll find seven places across the metro where your little or not-so-little ones can learn the basics of cooking, how to make pizza dough, take an international culinary tour, and so much more. We hope this issue will inspire you to rediscover the city or try things you’ve always wanted to do. But — most importantly — we hope you take the time to have a ton of fun this summer. Have some great adventures, Kansas City. Maybe we’ll see you around.

FAVORITE PLACE TO EAT IN KC

With such a busy life, it’s unusual to have a night out on the town. But when we do, I love making our way into the city to dine at Port Fonda. The atmosphere and food are always perfect!

FAVORITE DRINK IN KC

My husband and I love to sneak a happy hour and catch up on the day’s events and North Italia is our go-to spot. The Juliette is the prettiest and yummiest on the menu, if you ask me.

FAVORITE PLACE TO SHOP IN KC

I love shopping boutiques and feel like KC is really stepping it up when it comes to quality shopping. I’m always looking for house stuff and am inspired by Coveted Home and Golden & Pine. If I’m shopping for clothing, Clique Boutique is my go-to, but Standard Style is a close second.

FAVORITE HIDDEN GEMS IN KC

One of our favorite date nights is to do dinner and drinks at Port Fonda and then walk across the street to Imperial Foot Care. It’s the most relaxing date night ever.

FAVORITE PLACES TO TAKE OUT-OF-TOWN GUESTS

When we have out-oftown guests, nothing compares to a stroll through the Country Club Plaza. Everyone is always amazed that Kansas City isn’t a horse-and-buggy town and that we have so much culture and entertainment. The Plaza really shows that off.

BE WELL

Written by Jackie Woods

MEN’S HEALTH MONTH: TIME TO GET YOUR HEALTH IN CHECK June is Men’s Health Month and a perfect time for men to evaluate their personal health and become more proactive if necessary. Celebrated throughout the U.S., Men’s Health Month offers all of us the opportunity to promote wellness among boys and men. For example, June 15 has been designated as Wear Blue Day. Eating healthy and being active through regular exercise are two of the most important decisions a man can make to live healthily. Not only do these initiatives lower the risk of health problems like heart disease and diabetes, but men who maintain a healthy lifestyle also tend to have less stress, more energy, and a higher level of optimism. Although some men are very proactive about their health, others seem to benefit by receiving a little push from the women in their lives. According to Dennis M. Jensen, MD, at Shawnee Mission Primary Care – Prairie Star,

women play a key role in helping men to stay healthy. “Often, women are the ones who plan meals and activities for their families, care for their aging parents, and encourage their spouses to get to the doctor for wellness visits,” Jensen says. “I have cared for numerous male patients who have had potentially life-threatening conditions diagnosed and treated at the prompting of their spouse or daughter.“ As part of Men’s Health Month, Shawnee Mission Health encourages men to schedule an annual exam with a primary care physician in order to obtain recommended annual health screenings. “I have been impressed with how many of my younger male patients in their 20s and 30s take charge of their health and get physicals, even when not required by their employer’s insurance,” he explains. “Some of my patients are very proactive about their health and make annual visits for physicals.”

Still, if you know you are the procrastinating type, Men’s Health Month is an excellent excuse to start taking charge of your health. With most insurances and Medicare covering the entire cost of annual wellness visits, it’s tough to justify a good reason why you should skip seeing your doctor each year. One of the most important reasons to see your doctor annually is to stay on track with recommended cancer screenings. Many cancers can be treated successfully if detected early. Jensen recommends the following cancer screenings for his male patients: •S kin cancer screening: Each year, men should have their primary care physician or a dermatologist do a complete skin exam to look for signs of skin cancer. •P rostate cancer screening: Men who are experiencing prostate symptoms such as frequent nighttime trips to the bathroom,

straining with urination, a weak urine stream, or frequent dribbling at the end of urination should be screened annually. •C olorectal screening: Men should begin screening at age 50 unless a parent or sibling has a history of colorectal cancer. Then men should start earlier. Screening should continue until at least age 75. While men only need colonoscopies every five to 10 years, colorectal screening tests like fecal occult blood testing should be completed annually.

16

| SIMPLYKCMAG.COM

•L ung cancer screening: Men who over the age of 55 with a history of smoking may benefit from having an annual low-dose CT scan of the chest. According to Jensen’s experience with patients, men’s top health priorities are weight control, boosting energy levels, keeping a positive attitude, and maintaining a healthy sex life — all issues that can have a substantial impact on physical and emotional health. “Many patients are reluctant to bring up these issues with their primary care physician because they are embar-

rassed or feel nothing can be done for their problem,” Jensen says. “The truth is, in the majority of cases, your physician can help in these matters. Your physician wants you to have the best health possible, and that starts with taking the initiative to choose to live healthily.” The Men’s Health Program at SMH is designed to help men identify ways to improve their health. AROUND TOWN

Written by Julie Burton

KANSAS CITY’S GREATEST DADS It’s time to take the “World’s Greatest Dad” coffee mug out of your Amazon basket. We’re sure you know Father’s Day is coming up on June 17. Fathers — and father-figures — are sometimes difficult to shop for. Fortunately, KC offers a world of options to treat dad ... and it’s not neckties in every color of the rainbow. We found some of the best places to take dad on Father’s Day weekend because, in KC, we take pride in having the world’s greatest dads.

Father’s Day Beer and BBQ Brunch at Boulevardia boulevardia.com

You won’t need a passport, but prepare to be transported. Boulevardia is KC’s own country within a country. The urban street festival is taking place June 15 and 16 in the Stockyards District. It’s jam-packed with libations and entertainment from bands on three stages that dad — and the whole family — will love.

18

One highlight any dad is sure to love is the Father’s Day Beer and BBQ Brunch taking place Saturday, June 16. Tickets for this event include general admission to the festival, an exclusive barbecueinspired brunch from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., as well as unlimited beverages (including beer!) for $65. Ages 3 and up must purchase a ticket for admission.

KC Heart and Stroke Walk/5K Run Hosted by AHA Kansas City and KCP&L District

www2.heart.org Start Father’s Day weekend with a walk or 5K run with dad. It’s not just walking. It’s heart walking! Nearly 1 million Americans at 305 events across the country will rally on Saturday, June 16, to build healthier lives, free of cardiovascular diseases and stroke. This kid-friendly event starts at 8:30 a.m. in the Kansas City Power and Light District. Families can opt for a one-mile walk or 5K run. Register at the American Heart and Stroke Association’s website.

Disc Golf Experience at Arrowhead discgolfscene.com

On Saturday, June 16, take your dad golfing at ... Arrowhead? Although disc golf is played much like the traditional sport, in disc golf players use a flying disc or Frisbee. You complete a hole by throwing a disc from a tee area toward a target (usually a basket) and throwing again from the landing position of the disc until the target is reached. Players aim to complete a course in the lowest number of total throws. The Disc Golf Experience, hosted by Dynamic Discs, consists of nine holes set up on the field. It’s a fun experience in itself to be on Arrowhead’s turf, but even more unique to take a “swing” at disc golf with dad. You can register up to eight people when you select your tee time. Kids 12 and under may accompany parents on the course but will not be able to play the course. Kids 13 and up will need tickets according to the level they want to participate.

If you really want to buy dad something for Father’s Day, how about some peanuts and Cracker Jacks? Price Chopper is giving away a pair of barbecue tongs to the first 10,000 men through the gates. Father’s Day also falls on Sunday Funday, a season-long “Family Fun Day” that includes pregame face-painters and caricature and balloon artists. Bring the kids (or dad) in early for “Signature Sundays,” a pre-game Royals autograph session in front of the Royals dugout. Dad can also watch kids 14 and under run the bases after the game.

KACIE HOW TO GET TODDLERS TO BRUSH THEIR TEETH

My 2-year-old refuses to let me brush his teeth. I really want to establish good teeth brushing twice a day but the battle has got me avoiding it! What can I do to help him understand this is important for his teeth?

I’ve been through this before and it’s not a lot of fun. A daily battle with a 2-year-old puts everyone in a bad mood. Here are some things you can do to make teeth brushing fun: •

Make sure your son has a special toothbrush. Take him with you and let him pick it out. Also, get him a great-tasting toddler toothpaste.

Start off by letting him brush his own teeth. Give your son a few minutes to do it on his own and then say, “Mommy will help you now.” Make sure to give high-fives and positive reinforcement when he lets you brush.

Brush your teeth at the same time so he can see how you do it. Kids love to imitate their parents, and this will prove to him that everyone brushes their teeth.

Reward him for good teeth brushing. Give your toddler a sticker or something special — just make sure it’s not food-related!

If you have any questions you’d like Kacie to answer, submit them to our managing editor at: ashley@simplykcmag.com.

YOU’RE PART OF THE FAMILY AT AESTHETIC SURGICAL ARTS Written by T.E. Cunningham / Photos by Jami Marshall

The staff at Aesthetic Surgical Arts believes your time there should be a positive experience — from the moment you call for the first consultation to follow-up check-ins after your treatment or procedure is complete. “We approach everything here on a personal basis — it’s a family environment. I want people to feel like they are the most important person in the world. This is what I believe makes our oral surgery and plastic surgery practices stand out from others in the community,” says Dr. Joseph Camarata, owner. “We have an extremely kind, caring, and talented staff; their attention to detail is second to none, and they truly care about our clients. We pride ourselves on attention to detail.” And it seems his patients agree. “After I made the decision to have plas-

tic surgery, I began to feel apprehensive, but once I met with Dr. Camarata, I knew I was in great hands,” says Susy, a recent patient. “He really took his time explaining my procedure and patiently answered all my questions. By the time I left, I was feeling very comfortable and confident in my decision. I am so happy with my results. Dr. Camarata and his staff are the best in the business.” The practice truly is a family affair — Dr. Camarata’s wife, Colleen, is a nurse on staff. The two reside in Overland Park and have two adult children, Andrea and Joseph, two grandchildren, and another one on the way. The Camaratas

take that love of family to the office with them each day. So what’s on the menu of services you can consider in your quest to achieve your aesthetic goals? Quite a few options, as it turns out. You can choose from a nearly endless list of treatments or procedures like tummy tucks, liposuction, breast reduction/lift/ enlargement, facelift, rhinoplasty, lip augmentation, and a wide variety of skin care treatments. But that is still not a complete list. Dr. Camarata is board-certified as a

plastic surgeon and also an oral maxillofacial surgeon. As such, patients can get dental implants, bone grafting, wisdom teeth pulled, and more. “The practice is unique in that there are two specialties represented: oral and plastic surgery,” he explains. “We have expertise in one office environment that most don’t, and Mia Bella Donna Medspa (also located on-site and owned by Dr. Camarata) is a perfect complement to those two surgical areas.” Dr. Camarata received his medical degree from the University of Nebraska and his doctor of medical dentistry degree from the University of Pittsburgh, graduating with distinction and honors. He completed his plastic and reconstructive surgery residency program through the University of Texas Health Science Center and completed his oral and maxillofacial surgery residency through the University of Nebraska Medical Center. Dr. Camarata held the position of chief resident in both programs. What is his advice to those considering surgery?

“ There is a reason why people specialize in certain medical fields, so consult and choose a specialist for your procedure — not a general or family practitioner,” he advises. “Whether you’re looking for advice or a second opinion, there are many different options for an issue you may have. You want someone who is knowledgeable in all of the latest technology and opportunities to advise you.”

“The practice is unique in that there are two specialties represented: oral and plastic surgery.” These procedures are not just for women! The practice sees its share of male clients too, most commonly for pigmented lesions, facial treatments, botox, liposuction, rhinoplasty, and dental implants.

PRO TIPS FOR FINDING YOUR SIGNATURE SCENT Choosing a fragrance you love can be a fun, empowering experience. Science tells us that the sense of smell is closely linked with memory, very likely more so than any of our other senses. This is one reason why finding a signature fragrance is so personal and specific — a cumulative expression of what you’ve lived and what’s made a positive impression on you, scent-wise. Because of this, fragrance has the potential to say more about you to other people than even the clothes you wear. Along with choosing your fragrance based on your initial reaction to it, you might also want to consider the general effects that individual “smells” have on the brain. Essential oils provide an almost infinite number of fragrance combinations that do just that. And there are thousands of perfumes — and new options all the time — with notes that do the same.

32

| SIMPLYKCMAG.COM

In addition to its link to memory, the sense of smell also has a powerful effect on our emotions. Some scientists even think that kissing could have developed from a primal behavior where we smell our potential partner.

Where to begin? A living legend in the perfume world, Christine Nagel recently told Coveteur magazine there are two simple steps to take when choosing a signature fragrance. 1. Limit the number of perfumes you try at once. More specifically, keep it to no more than five, and try each one on both arms. It’s essential that you get a clear smell of the fragrance on your own body. 2. Go with your instincts. Don’t listen to what your friends and family say, or give you. Nagel says it’s key that we wear fragrances that we like, and that makes us feel good. That second tip makes a lot of “scents” knowing what we know

about the link between memory, emotion, and smell.

Overall impact The fragrance you choose will be very personal to you, and how others perceive it will be personal to them. However, there are things we know about the general impact individual fragrances have on the brain that we can take into consideration when making our pick. Cara Schriock, a massage therapist at Touchpoint Integrative Wellness Center in Shawnee, who also practices essential oil therapy, recommends using oils as a fragrance option because they are nontoxic and provide “a creative way to smell good.” She recommends combining 10 to 15 drops of your favorite oil, or combination of oils, in a glass roller bottle topped off with a carrier oil, such as avocado, which is nongreasy and doesn’t have a scent. “You can keep it simple with one oil,

or combine a few for a layered effect,” Schriock says. She recommends the book Mixing Essential Oils for Magic for tips on creating captivating combinations. The following are a few examples of individual fragrance experiences: • Grapefruit: Fresh and detoxifying • Rose: Intimate and radiant • Sandalwood: Sweet, calming, woody • Jasmine: Joyful & euphoric, uplifting • Patchouli: Earthy • Lavender: Calming, healing

Guidance from the stars Another fun approach to choosing a fragrance comes from astrology. What can the study of celestial objects and their position tell us about our fragrance preferences? Quan Tracy Cherry, one of KC’s foremost astrologists, says that creating balance through the elements is a good approach.

“A water sign would want more fire, or something grounding,” Cherry says. “Earth signs might need lighter, less musky fragrances.”

where proprietress Debbie Beachner offers only the rarest of perfumes. She sells the Rancé House line, developed in 1795 for Napoleon’s family.

Fragrances that are uplifting, like grapefruit, lend a fiery, energetic vibe that would work well for both water and earth signs. Air signs could benefit from more earthy, grounding scents, like patchouli, he says, while chamomile and frankincense help balance the fire element.

“It smells so good,” she says. “And there’s a very good chance you’ll be the only one wearing it.”

But no matter your sign’s element, setting your intention while using essential oils is key to receiving the benefits, Cherry adds. If you’re using a calming, healing oil like lavender, make it your intention to receive calm and healing benefits when you wear it. “Applying these oils to your chakras in the bath or shower rocks,” Cherry says.

Remember the link between smell and emotions and the scientific theory behind kissing? Pheromones are chemical substances excreted by animals (including humans) that trigger a social response in members of the same species. Some people swear by perfumes and fragrances that contain pheromones to attract romance! Whether testing existing perfumes or piecing one together on your own, once you decide to find your signature fragrance, you’ll encounter an endless array of options. Happy hunting!

Have fun with it If unique and rare is what you want, check out the Gilded Lily in Martin City,

FRANCE, FISH & FINE FOODS

ROMAIN MONNOYEUR OF WESTPORT CAFE & BAR As part of a new generation of French chefs, Romain Monnoyeur brought a unique style of French cooking — referred to as bistronomy, or the perfect balance of highend dishes using simple ingredients — to KC three years ago when he took the reigns as executive chef and owner of Westport Cafe. The restaurant stays busy with a French-American fusion brunch, features a full bar and cocktail menu, collaborates on dinners with other local chefs, and holds a Bastille Day celebration every year.

Are there any ingredients you think are underutilized? We use seeds right now to put on the fish from the market. Sunflower seeds and squash seeds, I think, bring a nice touch. I like to cook fish more than meat, and we have a great supplier, but in the Midwest, people don’t eat too much fish. What’s for breakfast on your day off? Bread. A nice bread from Messenger coffee — a baguette. Two eggs scrambled. An espresso coffee and orange juice.

What was the culinary school experience in France like? I started culinary school when I was 16. I wanted to be a fine-dining server in Paris; a server in France is a real job — it’s not like a side job. So I was studying to be a server and then I went to the internship where you also work as a line cook. I really liked being in the kitchen, so after two years I decided to focus on cooking. I landed an internship in Parkville and then fell in love with Kansas City, the USA, and how people react to French food here.

What would you be doing if you weren’t in this business? I would be a journalist or an actor. My father was an actor for 20 years and now he’s a director of a theater. I wanted to be an actor and he always told me not to, that it was very hard to make a living out of it. I wasn’t really good at school, and to be a journalist, you need to do a lot of schooling and language. I was always better at using my hands and mathematics than I was in French. So I decided to be a chef because you use both. You use your hands and your brain. When I was asked what the best quality of a chef was, I thought fast and organized, but, actually, you just need to be clever.

What’s your favorite thing about KC? I would say the culture. We have great museums, a great food scene, cocktail scene, and venues — a lot of music.

Do you have a guilty pleasure food? Mac and cheese. My mother was not a good cook and she always made mac and cheese and I still love it.

If you could learn any dish or master any type of food, what would it be? Japanese food. It’s so complex. I’d like to learn about ramen and sushi, just out of curiosity, not to open a ramen shop or anything.

Is there anything else we should know about Westport Cafe? Young people like this location because they can go to different bars, but I’d like to say to everyone that they can come and have a great experience with French food. They need to try it at least once. I’m sure they’re going to like it. I would like to bring in more people from different locations and tell them, “Don’t be scared of Westport.”

Growing up, what was your favorite meal and who cooked it? My favorite meal was a tomato gnocchi by my grandmother. She made her own tomato sauce from the garden

36

and she put in a lot of Comté cheese, which is from Jura, where I am from. It’s very melt-in-your-mouth. It’s good.

7 WAYS TO MAKE ROAD TRIPS FUN FOR KIDS Summer is here and folks everywhere are making plans for a little family bonding time. A road trip seemed like a good idea at first ... But now you’re wondering, “what was I thinking?!” as you ponder how you’re going to spend hours upon hours in the car without (hopefully) hearing that inevitable question. You know the one. So, whether the kids you’ll be traveling with are your own, extended family members, your kids’ friends, your friends’ kids, or any combination thereof, here are seven ideas for keeping your children engaged — or, at the very least, preoccupied — when you hit the open road. 1. Make a list of places to visit along your route and do some research on each prior to your departure. Get the kids involved to boost their excitement so that the journey is about milestones — not just the final destination. The additional effort will cost you in prep time but the payoff could be priceless. For example, a subscription to Highlights’ “Which Way USA” is a fun way for kids ages 6 and up to learn about geography and explore culture, history, and landmarks through play. Each state-by-state adventure kit features an engaging puzzle book and map set. Highlights also offers a number of free apps (highlights.com). 2. Get older kids involved by letting them play DJ. Have them create playlists or choose podcasts. They also can act as your personal concierge by using apps such as Yelp, Tripadvisor, Urbanspoon, and Google Maps to search for places when you need to take a break.

38

| SIMPLYKCMAG.COM

3. Give each kid a travel journal prior to the trip. Better yet, have them make their own.

ever hearing those dreaded words: “Are we there yet?!”

4. Pack ahead (or purchase as you go) a variety of snacks, preferably nonsugary ones, and enough water to keep everyone hydrated without adding unplanned pit stops.

Before you leave home, think about what you want to get out of the time your family spends together in the car. Will portable electronic devices be on your list of things to pack? If so, which ones? And will there be any limitations to their use?

5. Whenever practical, leave home at night or plan to drive the longer stretches while the kids are asleep. When they wake up, they’ll be amazed at the distance you’ve already gone. 6. If you plan to take a break from electronics, suggest some “old school” activities to pass the time, such as looking for license plates; playing I Spy, Slug Bug, or 20 questions; doing a scavenger hunt of particular items to find along the way; playing tic-tac-toe; powering through a book of MadLibs, crossword puzzles, word searches, or same/different picture books; or making some serious progress on that summer reading list. 7. Limit the amount of time you spend in the car at one stretch. Plan for occasional pit stops and meals on the road to break up the monotony and give everyone a chance to stretch their legs (or get the wiggles out). Good luck to you in your travels. We hope this guide will prevent you from

TECH READY

Perhaps you want to “unplug” at least part of the time, if not completely. Making sure everyone has a clear idea of what to expect from the get-go will go a long way in keeping the peace once you hit the road. If electronic devices such as smartphones, Nooks, Kindles, tablets, laptops, portable DVD players, and game consoles are invited, remember to pack any additional items that are necessary for prolonged or repeated use, like chargers and batteries. If you don’t already have a subscription to a music streaming service, don’t forget to toss a few CDs in the car — especially if remote stretches of highway are on your horizon. You also can rely on movie-streaming apps like Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime to stream on a phone, tablet, or laptop — but watch your data usage! Or, download movies or television episodes from Netflix or Amazon to pass the time. And, just to be safe, toss in some DVDs with your CDs — it never hurts to have a backup plan!

Cosmetic dentist Ross Headley, of KC Smile, has transformed hundreds of smiles in the KC metro.

DESIGNING SMILES AND CHANGING LIVES FOR 20+ YEARS Written by SIMPLYkc Magazine staff / Photos by Jamie Squire

What makes a great smile? Ask Ross Headley of KC Smile in Overland Park, and he’ll tell you it depends on who you ask. As a dentist whose emphasis is on cosmetic dentistry, he gets a lot of feedback from his patients. Dr. Headley says a patient’s idea of a beautiful smile is as varied as the motivation for people who are seeking beautiful teeth. Some people never had braces as adolescents and now want straight teeth, while others had braces but feel their teeth still are not attractive. Whether you are looking for love, searching for a new job, walking a daughter down the aisle, or fulfilling a lifelong dream, it’s certain that a stunning smile makes everything better.

40

| SIMPLYKCMAG.COM

Dr. Headley and his team help patients with one simple goal in mind. “We turn ordinary smiles into extraordinary ones,” he shares. “Nothing is more rewarding than seeing the transformation of not only the teeth, but also the transformation of self-confidence and self-esteem.” KC Smile offers a wide range of cosmetic and restorative dental procedures, in addition to free consultations. Part of that free consultation includes digital imaging that allows a

patient to see how they can look with cosmetic dentistry before committing to the procedure. “It is somewhat like a crystal dental crystal ball, where you can visualize the difference,” Dr. Headley explains. “And the fact that it’s free makes it even better.” One of the biggest roadblocks for people seeking services is fear. “Many people had a bad dental experience when they were young or are fearful for other reasons,” he says.

Dr. Headley discusses the patients’ fear and for those who need it, he will prescribe oral sedation dentistry. Many of those fearful patients often come back for future appointments without needing the oral sedation. Another concern is time. But Dr. Headley says most cosmetic cases can be completed in as few as two appointments about two and a half weeks apart. In the interim, patients wear temporaries. Dr. Headley often sees models, actresses, singers, and beauty queens in his practice.

are singing that your teeth look awesome,” Fisher says.

“Beauty’s in the eye of the beholder and everyone has their own definition of what makes a smile beautiful.” Although cosmetic dentistry is a large part of Dr. Headley’s daily schedule, he also performs all general and restorative dental procedures that include crowns, bridges, and dental implant restoration. His goal is to make sure all patients have their teeth in good condition to make chewing and eating their favorite foods possible. Many patients

are established long-time patients who come regularly to see one of the highly skilled dental hygienists. As KC Smile’s slogan says, life can be enhanced with a beautiful smile. “Beauty’s in the eye of the beholder and everyone has their own definition of what makes a smile beautiful,” he says. “Our mission is to make sure we understand what each individual wants and develop a plan that will meet or even exceed their expectations.” If your smile doesn’t reflect how you feel inside, Dr. Headley welcomes the opportunity to discuss the best options for you. Life’s simply too short not to smile as much as possible. KC Smile is located at 12850 Metcalf Ave., Suite 200, in Overland Park. Call 913.491.6874 to schedule a free consultation or visit kcsmile.com for more information about services.

2015 Miss Missouri Teen USA Christina Stratton is a KC Smile client.

Former Miss Kansas Jennifer Vannatta-Fisher says having cosmetic dentistry gave her added confidence in pursuing her title. She likes to call it “confidence dentistry” instead of “cosmetic.” Vannatta-Fisher‘s husband, J.C. Fisher of The Texas Tenors, also loves the smile Dr. Headley designed for him. “As a singer, it is a great feeling to know when your mouth is wide open and you

4 SIMPLE DESIGN TRICKS TO FRESHEN UP A ROOM Decorating a home can be a daunting task. These days, there are so many options — from online sites to discount stores — that the choices can be overwhelming. And the task of re-doing an entire room also can be quite expensive. If you feel like your home needs a “refresh,” there are some key trends you can incorporate without doing a major overhaul and spending a ton of money. We reached out to interior designer Mindy Day to pick her brain about home décor and her favorite of-the-moment trends. 1. Incorporate new colors. Mindy says adding a pop of color while keeping

42

| SIMPLYKCMAG.COM

other items neutral is a great way to add impact in a room. She created a colorful focus with a gorgeous shade of tangerine for these built-in shelves. 2. Light it up. Lighting also can make a huge difference in a room. Mindy urges her clients to not be afraid of using large-scale lighting. From lamps to chandeliers, the trend right now seems the bigger the better. She flanked this sofa with a large-scale white table lamp for added drama. 3. Add touches of texture. Create visual interest with patterns and textures. “Adding texture can really warm up the space,” Mindy shares. A wide range of patterns and textures are

hot right now, and are being used in everything from wallpaper to pillows and upholstery fabrics. Here, she layered various fabrics to create depth in her client’s bedroom. An inexpensive way to add texture is to incorporate interesting patterned pillows. 4. Get artsy. Mindy believes artwork is just as important as the furniture in a room. She recommends you research and find artwork that really speaks to you, then make it a focus of the room, as she has done in this space. If you are on a tight budget, try estate sales, antique stores, or websites like Etsy or Zaarly that hawk handmade art.

(Think: Bundt pan s.) On a rece nt trip to the city I made a point to visit the store … and , got a little carried away with my purcha ses. So, now is the per fect time to bake of my favorites, my #Foreve rRoyal one Bluebe Cream Cheese Pound Cake! It’s a just rry sweet-e nough pound cake loaded with bluebe rries from local farm s to sha fresh re at next Kan sas City Royals tailgate par the ty, Father’s Day, celebratory brunch, or any time you’re craving dessert and not hing but a deliciou s cake will do.

#ForeverRoyal Blueberry Cream Cheese Pound Cake Yield: 16 servings

INGREDIENTS 3/4 pound unsalted butter, room temperature 8-ounce package Philadelphia cream cheese, room temperature 3 cups granulated sugar 6 eggs, room temperature 1 tablespoon vanilla 3 cups all-purpose flour 1/8 teaspoon salt 12 ounces blueberries (two half-pints), rinsed, dried and tossed with 1 tablespoon flour

DIRECTIONS Preheat oven to 300 degrees. Grease and flour 10- to 12-cup Bundt pan. Set aside. Cream the butter, cream cheese, and sugar in an upright mixer at medium speed for 7 minutes, until light and creamy, occasionally scraping sides and bottom of the bowl with a rubber spatula. Add the eggs, one at a time, beating just until each yolk disappears into the cake batter. Stir in the vanilla. Combine the flour and salt, and at a low speed, slowly blend until just incorporated and the mixture is smooth. Stir in the blueberries that have been tossed with flour. Spoon the batter into the Bundt pan and smooth the top. Gently tap the pan on the counter a few times to settle the batter. Bake in the lower third of your oven, along with a 2-cup Pyrex measuring cup filled with water for approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes, or until toothpick is clean and no gooey crumbs remain. Be sure not to overbake. Let the cake cool on a wire baking rack for 15 minutes. Invert onto another baking rack and let cool completely. Transfer to a serving plate or cake stand and dust with confectioner’s sugar. Note: If the batter yield exceeds the capacity of your bundt pan, simply scoop extra batter into silicone muffin cups or mini-Bundt pans and bake, reducing the baking time according to size.

BECAUSE I SAID SO ...

Written by Julie Burton | Photo by Samantha Levi

SUMMER FIGHT CLUB Seven minutes and 43 seconds. It took my kids seven minutes and 43 seconds after the last school bell rang to the first, “Mom, she hit me!” of summer. I timed them. The first summer sibling fight. It has to be some kind of record. If you can’t beat ’em then join ’em. No, that’s not right. If you can’t beat ’em, thank Child Protective Services. That’s a horrible thing to say, Julie. Get it together. If you can’t beat ’em, then make a set of rules.

THE RULES OF SUMMER FIGHT CLUB: 1. Y ou do not talk about SUMMER FIGHT CLUB. The only exception to this rule is your parents. Reminiscing about a former childhood SUMMER FIGHT CLUB is allowed and will be told to your aunts and uncles with great glory. Remember who the true winners are in this family.

That’s called drowning and attempted murder. Use of any real weapons, such as a scissors or butter knife, will result in a lock-down confinement for the rest of summer. Name-calling is ideal for SUMMER FIGHT CLUB. 7. F ights will go on as long as they have to. Even if they go on for 34 years, so be it. Please do not destroy property. See rule 3. 8. I f this is your first time at SUMMER FIGHT CLUB, you have to fight. Congratulations! You passed this test seven minutes and 43 seconds after the final school bell rang. Now, can someone get me Brad Pitt and Edward Norton? I’m going crazy and maybe they would both understand.

2. Y ou do not showcase SUMMER FIGHT CLUB to your friends’ parents at the pool, camp instructors, grandparents, aunts and uncles, your neighbor’s house when the windows are open, runners passing your house, dogs passing your house, the person sitting in the car next to you at a stoplight, the grocery store clerk, or anyone you respect. 3. I f your mother says “STOP” or if someone starts bleeding enough to require a blood transfusion, the fight is over. And I do mean gushing blood. Google “Old Faithful.” 4. O nly two siblings to a fight. No pets, friends, cousins, or adults will be harmed in SUMMER FIGHT CLUB. You will use who you have available. Additional fighters will not be produced by your parents. 5. O ne fight at a time. Please, limit yourself to one fight per hour if you care about your parents’ sanity. 6. S ome things are off-limits: No stabbings with sharpened pencils. No fireworks thrown at each other while yelling “’MURICA.” The forefathers did not do this and you won’t either. No glitter thrown at eyes. No choking with scarves. No drownings. No holding a raft on top of your sibling while she’s underwater.

APP OF THE MONTH

GET FIT WHILE RUNNING FROM A ZOMBIE HORDE The gist: If you joke about running only if someone is chasing you, this might just be the app that motivates you to get moving.

Zombies, Run! is an immersive running game and audio adventure. Learn how Runner Five (that’s you) helps the Abel Township gather supplies and aids others trying to survive the zombie apocalypse. The app delivers the story through voice recordings, and when you finish your run, jog, or walk, you can use the supplies you collected to build and grow your base. During the story, you can opt to participate in a “zombie chase,” aka interval training — run faster, or risk getting caught and losing your supplies. The app also lets you listen to your own music, through your phone’s music player or music-streaming apps, during the story. Zombies, Run! is free, giving new players unlimited access to the first four missions and the ability to unlock an additional mission per week. A pro membership ($2.99, monthly) or ($19.99, yearly) unlocks unlimited access to all missions and game modes.
