Technology Based Weight Loss & Body Balancing Q&A With MaxLife Weight Loss and Body Balancing
What Is The Main Focus Of Your Business: The main focus of MaxLife Weight Loss and Body Balancing is to not only educate our patients on what it means to be truly healthy on a cellular level, but to also focus on what it means to have a body that functions in a state of internal balance. When your body attains a state of balance, weight loss is a by-product. In addition, health related challenges such as high blood pressure, adrenal fatigue, thyroid problems, diabetes, energy levels, sleep and overall mood are improved, just to name a few. Our exclusive technology based programs are results oriented and are based on the individual results and specific needs of each person, like a fingerprint. Due to this amazing technological advancement there is zero guesswork as to what someone needs internally to change their life and health.
What Sets Your Competitors:
Company Apart
From
To be honest, we do not have any competitors. Our technology based programs are exclusive to us. We are the ONLY office in the Kansas City market
with this unique technology. Again, to be clear, we do not offer a diet program, in fact we educate on why diets don’t work and how harmful they are to your health and longevity. We focus on the whole person internally by balancing the adrenal glands, hypothalamus, hormones, and resetting the metabolism, etc., so that everything in the body is working and functioning at its maximum and optimal potential.
Have You Developed Any Unique Innovations For Your Business: Again, our technology based weight loss and body balancing programs are exclusive to MaxLife. We are beyond elated to say that everyone who follows the specific program designed for their body has a 100% success rate. We have been able to help change the lives and health of so many people and ALL of our many patient success stories speak for themselves. WHERE: FAVORITE PLACE TO EAT IN KC That’s a tough one. But it depends on the occasion. I would say the all-around winner is The Rieger Hotel & Grille Exchange. Ryan Maybee is a personal friend so I know I’m biased, but you will never go wrong there. Sit at the chef’s table. FAVORITE DRINK IN KC Niall cocktail at Manifesto. It was invented there and is still a killer drink and best-seller. Or go to Gram & Dunn, sit outside, and have a glass of the Rieger Monogram. FAVORITE PLACE TO SHOP IN KC The Country Club Plaza. I am a sneaker head so I would have to say Foot Locker. I’ve definitely spent too much there, but they know how to take care of customers, which I can appreciate given the business I’m in. I also have two daughters (5 and 2) and they frequent Foot Locker as well. FAVORITE HIDDEN GEMS IN KC Manifesto for the best craft cocktails in Kansas City, Volume 1 for cool men’s gear, Coveted Home for gifts and home decor, RC’s in Martin City and Go Chicken Go for fried chicken, and Sandlot Goods for handmade leather accessories in the Crossroads. help out with this — especially if it’s an emotional subject for you. There’s no need for explanation, because frankly, it’s nobody’s business but yours. As for the dress, rings, and gifts, this is a bit more difficult. The ring might be the most problematic piece of the engagement to sort out. Is the ring an heirloom? Did you buy it together? Also, who ended the engagement? If the bride ends the engagement it is customary to give the ring back to the groom. If the groom ends the engagement, it is customary for the bride to keep it. If the ring was a family heirloom, etiquette says it should be returned to the respective family. For items you’ve bought for the wedding, consider selling them online. Sites like idonowidont.com or preownedweddingdress.com take dresses and rings. For gifts from others, return everything you haven’t used to the guest who gave it to you, along with a note of thanks. Likewise, send a thank-you note to the giver of the presents you have opened and begun using. I’ll be thinking about you! I wish you well during this incredibly hard time.
If you have any questions you’d like Kacie to answer, submit them to our managing editor at: ashley@simplykcmag.com.

Fringe Festival Brings Alternative Arts to Kansas City
26
| SIMPLYKCMAG.COM
Left Page Photos: (Top & Bottom Right) Steve Thompson, Play / Echo and Narcissus (Bottom Left) Kathleen Connors, Play / Crazy Horse, A Dream of Thunder
The annual Kansas City Fringe Festival pulls up the curtains this month for a variety of performances in about 20 venues across the city to present dance, performance art, visual art, spoken word, puppetry, storytelling, film, and fashion. The Fringe Festival is really the people’s theater — based on the principle of equal opportunity for performers of all levels and all genres. Nothing you’ll see has been selected or reviewed by Fringe Festival staff. The Festival accepts performances on a first-come, first-served basis until the schedule is full. And, it’s committed to presenting casual alternative theater; there’s literally something for everyone out there. While Kansas City’s Fringe Festival is going into its 13th year, the concept of this festival began in 1947 in Edinburgh, Scotland. Seventy years ago, eight uninvited performance companies camped out on the edges of the Edinburgh International Festival and drew the attention of passersby on their way to and from the “real” festival. The fringe shows, often presenting alternative performances, began drawing bigger and bigger crowds year after year. The tradition became so popular that other cities began hosting their own nonjuried Fringe Festivals. Last year’s festival in KC featured 475

performances from 139 artists, each taking the stage at least two times over 11 days. Of course, not many people are capable of taking in that much theater in such a short time, but some — “iron fringers,” as they’re called — will try. These die-hard regulars are bent on seeing as many Fringe shows as possible. To “fringe,” you first must buy a $5 Fringe button — a one-time purchase required for entrance at all shows and the free events at Fringe Central. Make sure to have your button on you at all times. Otherwise, you won’t be able to get into performances. Each performance costs $10. Or, you can buy a 10-show pass for $90, or an all-access pass for $250. Then check out the schedule and buy tickets at kcfringe.org or download the mobile app, which allows you to build your schedule and purchase tickets, and sends you reminders about upcoming shows. Most Fringe shows are 60 minutes (although some run 90 minutes). After the curtain has closed for the last show of the day, the Fringe Festival continues with “Late Night on the Fringe.” Beginning at 10:30 p.m. every
night but Sunday, festival-goers can head to The Living Room Theatre at 1818 McGee to mingle and have a drink with performers and other spectators, and enjoy live music or stand-up comedy — it’s different every night. Late Night on the Fringe is free for those sporting the button. Other free events include the Opening Night Fringe Teasers, taking place July 21, where you can sample two- to three-minute teasers of many festival performances and offerings, and the Iron Artist, an Iron Chef-style competition that pits artists armed with a mystery box of supplies against each other to create the coolest piece of art. The Fringe Festival isn’t exclusive to adults. In addition to its regular 11 days of performances, the Youth Fringe and Teen Fringe take place Friday, Saturday, and Sunday at the Plaza Library. These events feature kids and teens writing, directing, and acting in performances, plus displaying original art and helping with setup. Despite the Fringe Festival’s love of the unpredictable, one thing is for certain:

cont.
Originality and variety are the themes of this event. With its eclectic array of performances — some intensely serious, and others hysterically funny — chances are good you’ll be hooked.
How to “Fringe”
Follow these tips for making the most of your time at Fringe Festival KC. • Visit kcfringe.org to check out a list of all performances. • Head to your first show with $20 in your pocket — you’ll need $5 for your button and $10 for the performance. •A fter purchasing your button, make sure to wear it to every show so you’ll only have to pay for the performance itself. •D ownload the Fringe Festival mobile app for a handy guide and map to shows. •V isit the Fringe 411 Info Booth at Union Station on the theater level to grab a button, programs, passes, tickets, and merchandise.

If you happen to have items such as prescription drugs, passports, cash, guns, or jewelry in your home, she says you should stash them in a safe or create a go-bag to take these items during showings. “Don’t think that these items are safe tucked in a drawer,” she notes.

There’s your bridal shower, bachelorette party, rehearsal dinner, honeymoon, and sometimes more. What’s a busy girl to wear to any of those events? That’s where Russell Street comes in to save the day. Founded by fashion specialist Darby Asner, Russell Street is an online marketplace (onrussellstreet.com) for those white dresses and accessories the modern bride is searching for. “My goal is really to let people know that there is something out there for anyone who feels time-crunched right now,” Asner says. “This website can really act as a tool to save time in helping you find a piece you’ll really love and feel great in at your bridal events.” Fashion specialist Darby Asner established online marketplace Russell Street as a one-stop shop for all brides-to-be.

ho doesn’t love wedding season? For brides-to-be, it’s an exciting time of planning your big day — with the cake, dress, venue, and more to organize. But these days, weddings go beyond the ceremony.

Russell Street specializes in white and neutral products, from apparel and shoes, to swimwear, intimates, and gifts, all curated from more than 80 websites. Rather than hunting through stores for the perfect white dress for your rehearsal dinner or trying to find an outfit for your bachelorette party, Russell Street pulls together the best options available to browse in one convenient location. “Women are looking for pieces they can continue to wear past one of their wedding events,” Asner explains. “Russell Street offers them a

Aside from finding the perfect clothing items, Asner’s goal is to have the “experience feel like you’re shopping with your best friend” — which is actually where Russell Street’s name came from. Asner and her best friend both grew up on Russell Street. Their homes were the hang-out spots for all their friends — especially during the summer — and Asner wanted to bring that feeling to her online shop. “I wanted Russell Street to embody that place where you would hang out with your girlfriends and catch up and have fun,” she shares. With a fun-loving attitude and cute clothing options, Russell Street is a onestop shop for any time-crunched brideto-be — or a neutral-loving shopper — looking to find the perfect outfit. THE MENTAL BENEFITS OF EXERCISE
us time to reflect, enjoy the outdoors, and always makes us feel great when we’ve completed a run. I’m constantly trying to juggle commitments, including family, work, and maintaining friendships, but making time to exercise keeps my mental health in check.
W
e all know there are several components of being healthy overall — mentally, physically, spiritually,
emotionally, and so on. But did you know that being physically healthy can impact your mental health? That’s right — there are numerous mental benefits of exercising. Many people are motivated to exercise for weight loss, enhanced muscle tone, and better appearance. However, exercise can improve your mental health in many ways, including boosting your mood and, most importantly, reducing stress. This is a huge motivator for me. Exercise makes me feel good, and it certainly helps me relax and reduces my stress level. My wife, Lauren, and I enjoy running. It gives

Mental health is a very important part of our total wellbeing and improves our quality of life. When we are free from depression, anxiety, excessive stress, and worry, we can live our lives to the fullest. When our mental health is strong, we have healthy relationships, make good life choices, and handle the natural ups and downs of life. Exercise is one of the first steps to having good mental health. I recommend setting a goal of at least 30 minutes of exercise a few times a week, which will allow you to start experiencing a variety of great mental health benefits. Exercise can do the following for your mental health:
Reduces stress: Exercising increases your endorphin levels, which are neurotransmitters in your brain that make you feel good. I’m sure many of you feel stressed about not working out, so make time to exercise and eliminate some stress.
Boosts your mood: Those same endorphins that reduce stress also create feelings of happiness as they are released through exercise. Many studies have shown that exercise helps those suffering from mild depression or anxiety, providing a boost to your mood and a relaxed feeling.
Increases confidence: Exercise is a great way to increase self-esteem and improve positive self-image. Selfworth is extremely important, especially in terms of your overall mental health. Adding physical activity into your life, regardless of your weight, size, or age, can increase the perception of one’s self-worth and attractiveness.
Improves brainpower and memory: Exercise increases brain chemicals that help make new brain cells, which in turn help us learn. Certain types of exercise (particularly more complicated ones like tennis and dancing) can provide larger brain boosts. Many studies show that this increase in brain activity can help with better decision-making, higher thinking, and learning.
Prevents anxiety and increases relaxation: The chemicals that are released during exercise are ones that allow the body to calm down. Those who are anxious can benefit from a 20-minute jog or aerobics class, which will release calming chemicals. Likewise, your body temperature rises during exercise, and will drop back to normal once you’re finished. This drop can serve as a signal to your body that it’s time to relax, or even fall asleep. We’re lucky that we live in a time when there are so many options for exercise — from group classes to in-home videos and a plethora of gym membership options. Be consistent with your exercise, or you can mix up your routine with various forms. Find a regimen that works for you and make exercise a

I SAID SO...
BILLIE HOLIDAY IS A WOMAN
Scott: Well, sorry I don’t watch “The Notebook” over and over. Scott lifted his phone. Billie Holiday’s songs started. Scott: This one? Me: No.
My last first date was 15 years ago. Good. First dates are awkward. You’re being judged. You’re judging. Everything you do and say is taken into consideration — what you wear, how you speak, maybe even how you smell. Fifteen years and 1,000 dates later, I still wonder if I’m pretty enough. I still dress up. I curl my hair and wear heels. I know what Scott will order at a restaurant and he knows I’ll never turn down a whiskey. We don’t need to judge because we already know each other. And the man still makes me laugh. On our way home from a restaurant after watching a live jazz band at dinner: Scott: I know this is a dumb question, but is Billie Holliday dead? He’s dead, right?
Me: No. Scott: All these ringtones and none of them are it? Me: Ringtones? Scott: I figured her most popular songs would be a ringtone. This one? Me: That’s it! “I’ll Be Seeing You.” It’s in “The Notebook.” You know, when they’re old and dancing. Scott: Don’t remember.
Me: Oh, you know. That one song on “The Notebook.” Let me think.
| SIMPLYKCMAG.COM
Also for the record, Billie Holiday is a woman. I looked up when she died. I don’t know why, other than the conversation made me curious. Billie Holiday passed away on July 17, 1959. This is one of those times when life becomes a giant wheel, connecting everything together. Billie Holiday passed away on the same day Scott and I would get married — 45 years later.
Me: Noise?! She was one of the greatest jazz singers that ever lived.
Me: It’s not my favorite but I like it. It reminds me of coffee shop music. Or my grandma’s jukebox in her basement. This is our grandparents’ music. I imagine my grandma going on a blind date with my grandpa in downtown KC.
Scott: How am I supposed to know? And how do you know? Name one song.
For the record, Scott’s favorite genre of music is country.
Scott: This is awful. She sounds like … like, noise.
Scott: He’s dead! He’s old. Never mind.
Me: No. I mean, well, yes. I mean, Billie Holiday is a woman. He is a she. And yes, she passed away.
Me: Our grandkids. They’re going to be like, “Listen to this noise.”
Scott continued to play Billie Holiday’s songs on his phone.
Scott: Her ringtones are terrible. You can’t tell me you like these ringtones.
Scott: What? Did he die a long time ago?
Scott: For who?
Me: You live in Kansas City. This is a jazz town. You’re required to know that Billie Holliday is woman.
I turned my head and stared at him. Scott laughed.
Me: Are you serious?
38
Scott: This one?
Me: This is embarrassing.
Scott: Noise. Scott played “A Milli” by Lil Wayne. He started to rap and dance in his seat. Scott: “I’m a millionaire. I’m a young money millionaire … a milli … a milli … ah ah ah a milli.”

HOW TO HAVE FUN IN THE SUN AND STILL HAVE IT MADE IN THE SHADE
W
ith the increased visibility some cancers receive, it might surprise you to learn that each year there are more new cases of skin cancer than breast, prostate, lung, and colon cancers combined. That’s the bad news. The good news is that, while the incidence of all skin cancers — including the oftentimes deadly melanoma — is on the rise, it’s one of the most easily

treated cancers when caught early. Additionally, the risk of developing skin cancer can be greatly reduced through the regular use of sunscreen. Here’s some more bad news/good news: an estimated 90 percent of skin aging is caused by ultraviolet exposure. That said, people who use sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher daily show 24 percent less skin aging than those who don’t. The Skin Cancer Foundation reports that melanoma accounts for less than 1 percent of skin cancer cases, but leads to the greatest number of skin cancer deaths. One study conducted in the UK found that about 86 percent of melanomas can be attributed to exposure to UV radiation from the sun. Some people may cite this as a legitimate reason to use tanning beds,
thinking they pose a lower risk than being in the direct sun outdoors. And more than 400,000 cases of skin cancer in the U.S. each year are linked to indoor tanning, reports The Skin Cancer Foundation, including more than 6,000 melanomas. Skin cancer from tanning is more common than lung cancer from smoking. If you’ve used a tanning bed 10 or more times in your life, you have a 34 percent increased risk of developing melanoma compared to those who’ve never used tanning beds. Your risk jumps to 75 percent if you used a tanning bed before age 35. Faye Williams Khoury, a former manager at an Overland Park and Olathe tanning salon, became quite aware of the dangers when her customers started canceling their appointments
at the urging of their dermatologists. Some were diagnosed with skin cancer; others began seeking a safer way to get that sun-kissed glow. Fortunately, there are several options available, from smooth lotions you DIY to booth spray tans to custom tans put on by the pros. And, if it’s the all-natural, streak-free look you’re going for, a custom airbrushed spray tan is hands down the best option out there. Your beautiful bronzed look will last seven to 10 days. An added bonus? Spray tan professionals can correct tan lines and add body contouring.
ROW FOR IT
Khoury and her mother, Joni Williams, became such big fans of the custom spray-tan that they eventually became certified in airbrush tanning and opened their own spray-tan business, called HealthiTan, that uses organic, vegan products. “We wanted to open an alternative to tanning that would help people feel more confident and beautiful as well as being good for the skin,” Khoury shares.
SUMMER SKIN CARE TIPS You can reduce your risk of developing skin cancer as well as premature aging of the skin by using the right sunscreen applied correctly every day, says The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD). To protect your skin from the sun’s harmful rays, choose a sunscreen with the following three essentials:
H ea lth H ou se
HEALTH HOUSE healthhousekc.com
1. SPF 30 (or higher) 2. B road-spectrum protection (UVA/UVB) 3. Water-resistance Once you’ve found the right sunscreen, follow these tips for proper application: • Use about an ounce of sunscreen to fully cover all exposed areas of your body including your neck, face, ears, the tops of your feet, and legs. Ask someone for assistance with hard-toreach areas like your back. Use a lip balm with an SPF of 15 or higher. • Rub in sunscreen thoroughly about 15 minutes prior to going outdoors so that it can fully absorb. • Reapply sunscreen at least every two hours or immediately after swimming or sweating excessively. • The sun’s harmful UV rays are present every time you go outside — even on cloudy days and in the winter — so remember to use sunscreen every day no matter the season.

Brighten Your Summer With This Family Favorite There’s nothing my family enjoys more during the summer months than dining outdoors, soaking up the familiar and comforting sounds of our neighborhood. This includes listening to voices of the triplets playing across the street, the hypnotic musical stylings of our next-door neighbors, and the snippets of conversation from all the passersby. The Weber kettle grill is worth its weight in gold, and we feast on summer produce and crisp salads and fruit or frozen desserts. This fresh corn salad is a colorful complement to everything, from chicken, burgers, brisket, and steak to salmon, shrimp, and a tomato-ripe BLT!

APP OF THE MONTH
NEVER FORGET THE FUNNY STUFF YOUR KIDS SAY The gist: Your kid can be a hoot sometimes. With the LittleHoots
smartphone app, you can capture all those magic moments in one place. LittleHoots is a platform that helps you store all your memories, style those funny quotes in seconds, and share them. And it can do images and video, too. You have the option of keeping the memory private, sharing with your kid’s circle, posting to social media, or sharing with the wider LittleHoots community on the HootStream (a real-time stream of funny memories created by LittleHoot users). The icing on the cake? This company was founded by Kansas City-based Lacey Ellis. And it’s available for both iPhone and Android users.

ROLLER SKATING
Whether you head to a club or prefer to dance in your own living room, this activity is great for your body in several ways: it improves your heart and lungs, increases aerobic fitness, strengthens your bones, and more. We know keeping house is probably not your favorite thing to do, but you might feel a little better knowing you’re burning tons of calories while vacuuming and scrubbing down your house. You know the benefits of the good old walk, but geocaching takes walking to the next level. Explore the city and hike through nature as you play this outdoor game of searching for hidden containers. You might be imagining yourself in a tutu, but ballet barre is more sophisticated than that. A mix of ballet, Pilates, and yoga, it’s great for your core, legs, and flexibility. It might not seem like much of a workout until you walk out of class with jelly legs. Remember all the games you played as a kid? Tag, capture the flag, four square, red Rover … Playing these games with your kids will get your heart pumping. Plus, you’ll have tons of fun just being silly again. Sure, swimming laps is an amazing workout. But you don’t have to practice your backstroke to get benefits from being in the water. Just splash around in the pool and do cannonballs to your heart’s content — you’ll get plenty of exercise without realizing it. Studies have shown that roller skating provides a complete aerobic workout and involves all your muscles — especially your heart. You can head to the rink or take your skates outdoors. Just make sure to wear kneepads and elbow pads. Trust us.
