PUBLISHER’S NOTE

SURVIVING TRANSITIONS It never fails. I think, oh when summer is here, I’ll have so much more time to get things done. All those summer projects I’ve been dreaming about. All the books people have recommended. All those meetups with friends we’ve been discussing but have never been able to make happen. As soon as school is out for the year, however, all dreams are effectively dashed. I’m not complaining (too much). Summer is when my kids get a chance to do the things they really love. My son Carson, who’s 15, plays baseball, so we have practices during the week and tournaments on the weekends. Carson has been playing ball since he could pick up a bat and glove. He’s a lefty, so we were excited when he started pitching and enjoy watching him compete. Unfortunately, Carson has been unable to play for the past year and a half due to an injury. After months of physical therapy and resting his arm from throwing, though, he’s been given the OK to play this summer and eventually go out for high school baseball. And my daughter, Addison, who’s 13, will be in heavy training this month as her volleyball team, Dynasty, gears up for Nationals in Detroit. I’ll be traveling for six days with her at the end of June to watch the team compete. They have grown so much — in both skills and how they perform as a team. I’m especially proud of Addison’s improvement this past year. She’s refused to give up when times are tough, and it shows in her playing. So, yes, my evenings and weekends are pretty much spoken for as I run Carson and Addison from A to B to C. But I cherish this time with them because — no matter how cliché this sounds — kids really do grow up so fast. They’re both in middle and high school now and sometimes I look at them and still see them as tiny babies. How did we get here so quickly?! If you’re struggling with that same question, we’ve got a great piece in our Parenting column (page 38) this month. Our writer, Julie Burton, chatted with educators from the Blue Valley School District to find out how teachers ease the new-school jitters and how your child (but let’s face it, you, too) can cope with transitioning from elementary school into middle school. Even though our summers seem to be even busier than the entire year combined, I hope you can spend time with your friends and family. These “lazy” summer days will be gone before you know it.

BETH HOUTS As the owner of Beth Houts Photography, Houts specializes in portrait and nature photography. Houts loves documenting all the little things that take place on this big Earth. Her portrait works range from newborns to seniors to business professionals and beyond.

FAVORITE PLACE TO EAT IN KC My favorite place for dinner is La Bodega. I love the tapas menu and the restaurant philosophy: “Tapas is a way of life. It signifies leisure, camaraderie, and good humor.” I am all about those three things in life. I met my husband at La Bodega and they were also a part of our wedding day! A perfect Sunday would include Chez Elle for brunch. If you want a little taste of what Paris is like, that is the place to go. FAVORITE DRINK IN KC The smoked jalapeno margarita paired with the barbecue at B.B.’s Lawnside BBQ is tough to beat. I always enjoy the food and drinks. Add the music, and it’s perfection.

FAVORITE PLACE TO SHOP IN KC

After Sunday brunch at Chez Elle, we go to Westside Storey. It has a great mix of locally made merchandise and antiques. I love to support local business owners, and antiques are one of my favorite things to add to the design of any room.

FAVORITE PLACES TO TAKE OUT-OF-TOWN GUESTS

I love sports, and KC fans are extremely dedicated to their teams. Any one of the Royals, Chiefs, Sporting KC, or KU basketball games is a fun experience for an out-of-town guest. For friends who love to shop, the West Bottoms offers a fun place to find one-of-a-kind antiques and great local merchandise.

KANSAS CITY TO BOOST CARE FOR KIDS WITH SPECIAL NEEDS Photo / IDC

according to the National Health Statistics Report. Kansas City will soon be home to a world-class facility that will serve as a welcoming, safe place for children of many diverse abilities, thanks to a generous gift from a local couple, Doug and Nan Smith. Currently under construction on the Shawnee Mission Medical Center campus, the B.E. Smith Family Center, which is named after Doug’s father, will house the renowned Lee Ann Britain Infant Development Center (Britain IDC) and the Shawnee Mission Health Early Learning Center with the primary goal of promoting understanding and inclusion of children with special needs.

All parents want the best for their children, but it’s not always easy navigating treatment options for a child with special needs. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), one in six children in the United States has a developmental disability. The steep rise over the last decade in the prevalence of autism spectrum disorder also is creating a significant need for increased therapeutic support services, with one in 45 kids aged to 3 to 17 now diagnosed,

Since 1972, the Britain IDC has been a unique place offering a supportive environment in which children with a variety of special needs can receive comprehensive therapies and early childhood special education in one location by an exceptional team of professionals. Families are never turned away because of their inability to pay, but there are about 30 families on the waiting list at any given time. The Britain IDC encourages a high-level of parental involvement in therapy sessions, training, and support groups. “When families first start looking for services, they are scared and not sure what the future holds,” says Britain IDC Director Amy Milroy. “But once here, they feel confident in their new journey of raising a child with special needs. The friendships and support network families develop at the center last a lifetime.”

Ten percent of infants to 5 year olds in Kansas are identified as children with special health care needs per the National Survey on Child Health Care, of which 30 percent require developmental therapies. Furthermore, the Kansas Department of Health estimates 4,196 children in the KC area receive therapeutic services. With this rising need, families in KC are looking for high-quality, affordable options. State-funded services are available for kids 3 and under, but the services consist of in-home treatment. These children must qualify by meeting the minimum threshold for developmental delay. The criteria for services can leave some children unserved. At 3, the child may transition to the local public school, but districts are limited to providing only support tied to educational outcomes. Our community needs an array of service options to best serve the individual needs of all children and families. Opening in 2019, the B.E. Smith Family Center (besmithfamily.org) will allow the Britain IDC to offer comprehensive services to a larger number of families and will promote inclusivity among kids of all abilities. The new center will feature an integrated harness system, the first of its kind in the world, in multiple classrooms and therapy areas. It will allow all kids, regardless of their disabilities, to explore their environments independently. This promotes social inclusion and cognitive development. Additionally, the new center will feature two state-of-the-art indoor saltwater pools for aquatic therapy. The larger pool includes zero-depth entry, natural light, and therapeutically designed areas. The smaller continued on page 16

The Smiths grew up in the KC area. They do not have a child with special needs, but have been inspired by witnessing the wonderful inclusion of children with special needs during their daughter’s time in the Blue Valley School District. Doug’s wife Nan also has volunteered at the Britain IDC, where she saw firsthand how inclusion benefits children and families. “Kids have no bias, so promoting inclusion at a young age is imperative and a great way for our community to show love for others,” Nan shares. “A child should never be identified by their condition, but as a person first who happens to have a disability.”

AROUND TOWN

Words by Deborah Eakin Osborn

PLAYING IT SAFE: SELF-DEFENSE FOR WOMEN When I was a college student in Los Angeles, it was more than a little unsettling to learn that approximately one in three women would, at some point, become a victim of rape. Not wanting to be the one, this alarming statistic motivated me to enroll in a several weekslong self-defense course offered through my university’s recreation department. The class provided one-on-one contact with an instructor. I distinctly remember the assumption that, because the likelihood of being attacked was so great, your

18

| SIMPLYKCMAG.COM

best defense was learning how to get out of a situation. While there was some mention of being aware of your surroundings, I recall little else being offered that might help prevent an attack from occurring in the first place. Thankfully, a shift in philosophy appears to have taken place since I was in college. Rather than simply instructing a person on how to defend one’s self once attacked, the current trend is to empower individuals in an effort to try to prevent an attack from happening through a variety of techniques such as deflection and de-escalation. Kathy Rose-Mockry, PhD and director of the Emily Taylor Center for Women & Gender Equality (ETC) at the University of Kansas, says ETC aims to empower individuals to advocate for themselves and others. Its EmPower self-defense work-

shops reflect the center’s mission of empowerment as well as one of its core values: violence prevention. EmPower workshops are designed to improve awareness, personal safety, and self-confidence by taking a holistic approach to self-defense, emphasizing both physical and psychological strategies. Professional martial artists from Premier Martial Arts teach each session. Some workshops also feature instruction on how to defend yourself in a situation in which weapons are present. Services are free KU for students, as well as staff and faculty. Dr. Rose-Mockry acknowledges that women continue to be the greatest targets of personal safety crimes, including rape, sexual assault, and domestic assault, but adds that ETC is inclusive of everyone.

Although some elements are common to both, Dr. Rose-Mockry explains the goal of self-defense is not the same as in the study of martial arts. In self-defense, the goal is to learn a variety of basic, hands-on techniques that almost anyone can use for self-protection.

A SHORT LIST OF SELF-DEFENSE CLASSES IN THE METRO Midwest Martial Arts Academy (midwestmartialartsacademy.com) in Overland Park is a Level 2 Gracie certified training center for Kansas and Missouri totally dedicated to teaching Jiu-Jitsu as a means of self-defense. The first Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Academy was established in Brazil by Carlos Gracie in 1925. In 1989, Rorion Gracie established the first Gracie Academy in Torrance, California. Midwest Martial Arts Academy is a direct source to the Gracie Academy in Torrance. Women Empowered is the official Gracie self-defense program for

women. Each of the one-hour lessons in this 10-week program addresses two techniques you can use to neutralize the 15 most common attacks. You may start the program at any time and participate in any class without previous experience. In addition to self-defense classes for adults, Bullyproof classes are available for kids 5 to 8 years old. Premier Martial Arts (premier martialarts.com), the studio whose Lawrence location provides instructors for the EmPower selfdefense workshops through ETC, has locations in Lee’s Summit as well as Riverside. Krav Maga is one of the programs offered at Premier. The name, which is pronounced “Krahv Magah” and means “contact combat” in Hebrew, is the official self-defense and fighting system of the Israeli Defense Forces. Recognized as the most efficient selfdefense system for real-life situations, it emphasizes practical defenses

against real attacks. Training focuses on teaching simple self-defense techniques and stresses the ability to react when surprised. T.A.K.E. Defense Course (takedefense.org) is a free, two-hour selfdefense workshop where you can learn how to protect yourself through hands-on training. In honor of Ali Kemp, a 19-year-old Leawood woman who was murdered, the Ali Kemp Foundation was created to equip women of all ages with the resources needed to feel safe. From a highly successful awareness program to educational scholarships, the foundation helps empower women. Participants ages 12 and up are encouraged to bring a family member or friend because working with a partner is involved in the course. July courses are taking place from 10 a.m. to noon July 14 at Blue Valley Recreation and 10 a.m. to noon July 21 at Matt Ross Community Center. Register online.

KACIE HOW TO RECLAIM YOUR SIDE OF THE BED Every night, no matter whether we go to bed together or at different times, my husband eventually makes his way into the middle of the bed and crowds me so much that I’m literally on the edge. Staying asleep is hard enough. What are some options for dealing with this, other than jabbing him in the back with my elbow or sleeping in a different room?

Sleeping should be restorative, so I get why you’re frustrated when you’re feeling disrespected about being crowded in bed. Have you tried discussing your nighttime habits outside of the bedroom? Express how uncomfortable you feel at night and ask your husband if he has any solutions. If he’s more about snuggling while you’re trying to fall asleep, perhaps you could suggest setting aside 15 minutes in bed for pillow talk or cuddling. If he’s unaware he’s crowding your space and refuses to do anything about it (there might be another issue at hand). But you could consider upgrading to a king-size bed if it’s in your budget. I’ve heard from many friends who’ve told me how life-changing — and how great a night of sleep — it is. Finally, you might trying using separate blankets. This may prevent your partner from hogging the bed. But, if you end up wanting to cuddle, you can overlap them!

If you have any questions you’d like Kacie to answer, submit them to our managing editor at: ashley@simplykcmag.com.

BURGERS, COCKTAILS, AND SPORTS: THE AINSWORTH ELEVATES THE SPORTS BAR EXPERIENCE Words by Brennan Hallock / Photos by Jami Marshall

Kansas City is known for two things: sports and food. From the Royals to the Chiefs to Sporting KC, we are loyal fans of our sports teams. Our rich history of tasty barbecue and ribs is an es-

the Mac & Cheese Burger. “I wanted to combine a couple of things people of all ages love, and that is macaroni and cheese and a hearty cheeseburger,” Mazza explains. “By blending those two favorites, I was able to give people what they love in one bite.”

sential piece of the local culture — a culture that is continuously changing and evolving, especially when it comes to food. Kansas Citians are proud of these two traditions, so it comes as no surprise that one of the city’s newest additions, The Ainsworth, has meshed well here. The Ainsworth, which opened January in Leawood’s Park Place, combines those two passions in one sitting. “There are two big factors in our brand that mean a lot to people,” says Brian Mazza, co-owner of The Ainsworth. “They are sports and food. People care about their sports teams as much as they do about what they’re eating. We want to continue to elevate that experience for our customers.” The Ainsworth started in New York City. The expansion into Leawood is its first location in the Midwest. KC may seem like an unusual first step outside the northeast, but Mazza explains there are many similarities. “The communities are the same,” he says. “Both cities have diehard sports fans, and people in both locations are on a quest for amazing food.” In its desire to combine two things people love, The Ainsworth has created what is their most popular dish:

The Ainsworth’s Gold Wings are chicken wings soaked in coconut butter, chipotle, and honey batter, fried, then dusted with 24-karat gold flakes.

The Ainsworth serves more than burgers, though. The restaurant was created to fill a void in the sports bar market, and it elevates your “sports bar” experience by serving entrees like its coffee-rubbed fish tacos and short rib sandwich as well as high-quality steaks, fish, and chicken; a variety of greens; and a sampling of sides such as crispy artichokes and its signature Mac & Cheese Fries. Like any good Midwest restaurant, you’ll also find a well-equipped bar. Specialty cocktails include the Crooked Knife, a jalapeño-infused tequila with lemon agave, and the Ol’ Jackie Girl, a mix of apple cider, honey, lemon, orange bitter, and Jack Daniels.

Another specialty Ainsworth specialty — Gold Wings — will be coming to Kansas City soon. These chicken wings are soaked in coconut butter, chipotle, and honey batter, fried, then dusted with 24-karat gold flakes. This odd new food craze is the result of a collaboration between The Ainsworth and Jonathan Cheban, aka Foodgod, who is an Instagram sensation and self-proclaimed food lover. “Great food accompanied with exceptional service is key,” says Jason Harper, the general manager of The Ainsworth in Leawood. “We create an experience here and offer a variety of food and cocktail options for everyone.” The Ainsworth is family-friendly, having just launched the kid’s menu. And a large outdoor patio makes it the perfect spot for outdoor dining. And, with 23 TVs and 11 cable boxes, you’re not restricted to prime-time sporting events. “The Ainsworth is a good place to catch any sporting event you’d like, from soccer to rugby to tennis to baseball to football,” Harper says. The Ainsworth is open until midnight during the week, and until 2 a.m. on the weekends. Thanks to its appeal to two of our city’s greatest obsessions — sports and food — The Ainsworth fits in well with KC culture. “People are passionate about these things,” Mazza says. “So, we make sure we always deliver on our product.” The Ainsworth is located at 11563 Ash St. in Leawood. Breezy summer dresses? New summer shorts? Flowing skirts? One of the best things about summer is shedding our heavier clothes and replacing them with lighter ones. Yes, we do it to stay cool, but it also reflects the lightening of our mood as we enjoy longer days and warm nights. Plus, the change in seasons always brings a chance to brighten up our closets with the latest styles and trends. For those of us who seek comfort as well as style, finding the perfect shoes to go with our summer wardrobe can sometimes be a challenge. OK, let’s face it — it can be downright frustrating. But we’ve enlisted the help of local pedorthist Matt Stanley and wardrobe stylist Jennifer Niehouse to pave the way for us!

| SIMPLYKCMAG.COM

SUPPORT FOR HAPPY FEET Stanley is part of the team at Biofeet (biofeet.com), where Kansas Citians with upper and lower extremity conditions come for a wide range of noninvasive solutions, such as shoes, braces, therapy supports, compression stockings, and durable medical equipment. Key to keeping your feet happy this summer, as in any season, is finding the right shoe for your foot. For some, Stanley says, that means arch support. For others, it’s a larger toe box. “I’d actually recommend arch support, even a standard orthotic, to anyone who’s on their feet most of the day,” he explains. “When your weight is evenly distributed with the help of support, you’ll feel a huge difference.” Buying the wrong shoe size and

shape can lead to discomfort and other foot issues. “Shoes that are pointed are really bad for bunions. Try boxy toes,” Stanley says. “And I tell everyone to make sure there’s a thumb’s width of space between your toe and the top of your shoe when you’re standing.” Flats seem to be a better choice than heels, but Stanley says a low heel with support is actually better for your feet than a ballet flat with no support. In general, high heels aren’t great because your body weight is thrown to the front of your foot. The takeaway? A supportive shoe that keeps weight evenly distributed is key to foot comfort and health. This, of course, contributes to your entire body’s health.

FEELING GOOD AND LOOKING GOOD Jennifer Niehouse, wardrobe stylist and owner of It’s So U! (itssou.co), agrees that support is important. But that doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice style. With all the comfortable and stylish shoe and sandal options available, Niehouse knows it can be overwhelming to even know where to begin. She recommends — and wears — these brands:

We specialize in Trendy Boutique Styles & Casual Basics Wear

1. Bella-Vita (these come in wide and hard-to-find large sizes) 2. VanEli (come in special narrow sizes)

2nd Location in Leawood Now Open!

3. Tom’s 4. Vionic (a little more expensive) 5. Dr. Scholl’s Stanley’s recommendation of wearing short heels, which protects your feet and overall health, is also great style advice for this season, says Niehouse. “Kitten heels are in!” she says. “They are generally fewer than 2 inches high, but you can go lower than this. The heels actually come in all widths, so you can go with something wider for better balance. You’ll know them by the slight curve setting the heel in from the back edge of the shoe.” And remember: You can never have too many shoes — especially when they’re great for your feet. Enjoy the season!

KANSAS ROOTS WITH LOCAL ARTIST JAN SCHOONOVER Words by Julie Burton / Photos by Jami Marshall

Where are you from? It’s a common question. It could refer to the place you were born, where you grew up, or lived the longest. The question could also mean where are your ancestors from? Do they play a role in who you are? If you ask Jan Schoonover, a local artist, Kansas City is the simple answer — Merriam, Kansas to be exact. She lives with her husband in the house her father built in 1949. She’s the daughter of two educators — a profession she followed, as well as becoming a fine artist. Schoonover and her husband moved back to KC after living in New York City for 30 years. Upon her arrival, she discovered new details about her ancestry. She always knew other artists existed in her family tree, but until recently, she never realized how much her diverse ancestry played a role in her work. She realized her strong desire to include bright colors in her paintings may hail from her pioneering ancestors from Dodge City and beyond. And her whimsical, spiritual nature may come from her mother. Her mother’s side of the family derives from Judaism. “This explains so much about my mother,” she says, “and even more so my art.” Schoonover’s studio space is located in the Livestock Exchange Building in Kansas City’s West Bottoms. Besides the history and uniqueness of the building, she chose this space for two reasons: her view of the horizon and of the storefronts across the street. The storefronts echo childhood memories of Emporia with her grandmother. And the horizon is something she never saw while living in NYC. “I feel rooted in Kansas City. That’s why we moved back,” Schoonover explains. “My family came here before Kansas was a state. There’s something in me that’s tied to the earth.

I’m sure of that. It’s hard not to be able to see the sky every day.” KC may be home, but Schoonover built a 30-year career in NYC by teaching art to students at a prestigious Upper Eastside girls school, one where many celebrities’ children attend. However, her teachings stretched far beyond. She received grants to teach art at a Mandarin public school in Chinatown and taught a symposium at Oxford University in England and Columbia University. “Teaching children is sacred. Children are unafraid. They don’t care what their neighbor will say,” Schoonover says. “I think adults could learn from that. Creating art is hard work. It takes time, thought, and deliberation. People tell me all time, ‘It must be nice to have a life of leisure,’ but it’s not. It’s methodical. Creativity requires a detachment.”

“In New York, cheap umbrellas quickly break, and people throw them in the trash. I took them and gave them personalities.”

Schoonover’s paintings and exhibits have been featured around the world including the Spencer Museum at the University of Kansas (her alma mater) and as far as the Modern Museum of Art in Moscow as well as several personal collections throughout the U.S. Some of her more popular works include “Explosion,” which she painted the night of 9/11 after walking home in New York City. Her realistic and raw feelings are captured in each brush-stroke. Having

lived on the same street as the World Trade Centers, her varying shades of red portray the fire and fury that unfolded. She also debuted a colorful and imaginative collection, “Umbrellas,” in Paris last fall — a high-point in her career. The umbrella exhibit features 37 broken umbrellas, repaired into colorful, creature-like shapes using a mix of materials. Schoonover loves the circular shape of umbrellas and the idea of protection they give from the elements. The idea was inspired by her life in NYC where she saw scattered umbrellas on the streets, sidewalks, and filling garbage cans after each rain. “In New York, on rainy days, street vendors sell umbrellas for $5,” Schoonover explains. “Of course, they break within five minutes, and people throw them in the trash. I took them and gave them personalities. I think they’re striking, fun, and whimsical. I went to Paris three times during my outdoor exhibition. Each trip I thought, ‘This is heaven.’” In her career, Schoonover has traveled to more than 20 countries and views her life with openness. “Art as is life is colorful,” she says. “I believe its possible people can get narrower and narrower if they don’t expose themselves to different cultures, people, and thoughts.” Mixture and diversity is how Schoonover has stayed relevant in the art world she says. “I’m not sure how I built a career for so long,” Schoonover says. “It’s a determination. I kept painting and creating art because of me.” Schoonover is from Kansas, but her work is from pieces of people that once lived around the world. Visit janmarieschoonover.com to see her work.

AROUND THE U.S. AND NOW TO KC

MEGAN GARRELTS OF RYE & BLUESTEM Her love of baking has taken Megan Garrelts across the country. She began in New York with her first internship, back through her hometown of Chicago, then to Las Vegas and Los Angeles, and finally to Kansas City. She and her husband Colby own and operate two beloved KC restaurants: Blue Stem and Rye, where she works as executive pastry chef. Most recently, the couple opened their second location for Rye on the Plaza, which Megan dubs “a perfect toast to Kansas City.”

What’s your favorite thing about KC? I love that it’s a big small town. I love that if we fly somewhere, I know three or four people on the plane every time we leave KCI or sometimes coming back. The restaurant community is really small and tight-knit. Everybody knows everybody. In other cities we’ve lived in, you might hear of or know of a chef or see them at an event, but you don’t know them as intimately as the chef community does here. The bar community here, too — I think everybody does a really good job of coming together for the same reasons. If you weren’t in this business what do you think you’d be doing? Honestly, my dream job would be to be a veterinarian, but I hate school. Science, math, and all that jazz were never my strong points, so I don’t think I could ever hack eight years of it. But I love going to the vet. We have a couple cats and a dog and I’m just amazed at what they do. I love animals, so it would be a fun job.

Growing up, what was your favorite meal and who cooked it? That’s a tough one. I have a lot of food memories. My mom was always in charge of dessert for holidays. My mom and her baking — that’s where my love of baking came from.

Is there a dish or type of cuisine you’d like to learn? I am fascinated with Indian food. Colby and I tried to make it once at home. We bought a bunch of spices, but it’s just really complex. Culturally, it’s very foreign. I had an Indian friend growing up named Priya and her family would always have me over for dinner and I just loved it — all those smells. It was so different from what I was used to. It would be fun to know — or at least apply — to desserts. It’s never really played a role in my menu but it’s interesting, either to try at home or when I’m out and about at restaurants. Chai Shai is really good, I’ve been there a few times. It kind of has that little niche over there. Are there any ingredients you think are underused? We use seeds right now to put on the fish from the market. Sunflower and squash seeds, I think, bring a nice touch. I like to cook fish more than meat, and we have a great supplier, but in the Midwest, people don’t eat too much fish. It’s breakfast. What are you making? I go back and forth between MaltO-Meal, which I love in the winter. (I love oatmeal and Malt-O-Meal and my whole family hates it but I grew up eating it. My dad made it all the time for breakfast with tons of brown sugar and raisins and milk.) Or I do two poached eggs and toast. Do you have a guilty pleasure food? Chocolate cake or chocolate chip cookies. I love making chocolate chip cookies just like anyone would at home and eating half the dough, and then eating them right out of the oven is great. What’s the most important ingredient in your cooking? High-quality unsalted butter. One thing not to chintz on is butter. People buy cheap butter all the

time but it’s full of water. It doesn’t give you as good a product or flavor. High butterfat is good.

Do you have any culinary tips for the home cook? Keeping fresh pantry supplies is really important. A lot of people use old baking soda or baking powder. Old flower, especially cake or self-rising flour, doesn’t work as well. It’s kind of like makeup: Don’t use your mascara for more than six months. I apply that rule to pantry items. Also, make sure your tools are clean and knives are sharp. It makes it easier to prep at home. The right tools and the right ingredients are everything. If you could travel anywhere for one week, where would you go? I love winter and cold weather, so I’m not really a beach person, but I do like the relaxation aspect of that. I want to go to Europe again. I’d love to go back to France or London. I’d love to do the Rhône wine region in France. It’s on the top of my list. That, and German wine country.

PARENTING

Words by Julie Burton

MIDDLE SCHOOL: HOW TO HOLD ON AND LET GO Middle school. It’s a school-aged kid’s version of “This isn’t Kansas anymore.” The unknown territory isn’t just new for the kids. It’s new for parents, too. Middle school has changed since we’ve been there. But some parts are the same if you pay attention.

38

with parents, but we also want to encourage the students to be more independent.

mon fear parents have is whether you even know our kids. How do teachers tackle getting to know so many kids?

Principal Diana Tate at Aubry Bend Middle School in the Blue Valley School District and a panel of middle-school educators sat down with SimplyKC Magazine to educate you about your child’s transition.

Tate: We know it’s hard for parents to check eight different teachers’ websites. Our district uses a learning management system called Canvas. It’s viewable on the computer and available as an app. It’s a one-stop shop for parents, students, and teachers to view grades, check homework status, find class updates, and just keep everything organized.

SIMPLYkc: The biggest shock for many parents transitioning from elementary to middle school is the difference in communication with teachers. We know you always welcome parental concerns but, in general, do the teachers want parents to back off some?

Kim Vail, sixth-grade teacher: Some kids need more accountability than others. It depends on the kid. We encourage parents to check their child’s stress level — she might have it together or may need some help with organization. You know your kid the best. We’re always here to help parents with the transition.

Vail: We know your kids. The difference between an elementary and a middle school teacher is how much we know. In elementary school, a teacher will know the kid, the siblings, the extended family — we might even have the parent’s phone numbers stored on our phones. In middle school, we know your kid. We just don’t know all the families. You might have to tell us which kid is yours, but once you tell us, we know.

Ryan Colburn, assistant principal: We don’t want the parent to back off but to check in. We want a partnership

SKC: The conferences are different in middle school. Parents jump table to table to meet with teachers. A com-

SKC: OK, let’s go to P.E. From the locker rooms to changing clothes to the showers — how can we help put our kids at ease? Christyn Haberly, physical-education teacher: P.E. is co-ed. My roll call is co-ed, but when it’s time to change I take the girls to their locker room and a male teacher will take the boys. There are restrooms in the locker

rooms with doors. If kids choose to use showers, there are curtains for privacy. At the beginning of the year, there’s a line of girls waiting to change in the restroom. Once they get to know the faces in the locker room, it’s not a big deal anymore. But, we still have kids who change in the bathroom. It depends on the kid, family, and personal feelings. By eighth grade, they’re taking off their clothes by the time they hit the door. SKC: With the merging of several elementary schools into one school, how can we help our kids make friends? Tate: Teachers are good at mixing kids up throughout the year. There are many ways for sixth-graders get involved — plays, musicals, clubs. The beauty of middle school is no one gets cut. Also, our lunch is open seating. Most kids stick to their safe elementary friends at the beginning of the year. By October, they start mixing. SKC: What can a parent do if they’re worried about a child being picked on? Pulcini: The kids do test the waters and that’s tough at the beginning. When you have two to three schools coming together, kids do try to one-up each other. They make little jabs to keep others in check or to make themselves feel better. By the second semester, everyone typically figures out their own way to excel. Tate: You can call it whatever you want. I won’t nail a kid to the wall. Our media and society don’t give them great role models. Everyone needs a teachable moment. We’ll have private conversations. Sometimes kids think we didn’t do anything, but it’s just that we won’t shout in the hallways: “Hey, this kid said something mean and he’s not going to do that anymore.” A kid’s perception is different than what happens behind the scenes. We teach everyone to be kind. SKC: What’s your electronic devices policy? Tate: Every school is different. We prefer that kids keep their devices in a locker during the day to encourage more socialization. They can use devices before and after school. It’s their currency right now. It’s how they communicate with each other — as much as it’s hard for our generations to understand. Taking electronics completely away is hard. We’re preparing them for high school in the safest environment we can. SKC: What are the dances like? Do middle schoolers “date” yet? Pulcini: We don’t have dances in middle school. We do have activity nights where the kids can do a variety of things like basketball and gymnastics. There is a DJ but it’s more group dancing. They do have crushes. Sixth grade is still “boys here” and “girls there” and there’s a messenger going back and forth saying who likes who. It’s still primitive the way they communicate. That part hasn’t changed.

Many thanks to: Sponsors Attendees Volunteers Entertainers All proceeds of this event support SAFEHOME, a Johnson County Domestic Violence Agency

TIMOTHY WEBER PROVIDES BEAUTY AND A SENSE OF INCLUSIVENESS Words by T.E. Cunningham / Photos by Jami Marshall

Park Place in Leawood is known for offering the best in local retail and services with a heavy dose of charm and elegance, and Timothy Weber fits the bill. Formerly Hawk’s Nest and Michael Shae, the salon underwent its third reimagining a year ago when Timothy Weber realized a lifelong dream. Encouraged by his life partner and business partner, who he met three and half years ago, Weber made that dream a reality by relocating to Kansas City to be with family and operating Timothy Weber Salon. Weber runs the creative arm of the business, and his partner handles the financial operation. They are joined in managing the salon by Emily McCoy, who believes nothing is more rewarding

than helping people look and feel as beautiful as they truly are. “Emily is amazing. In fact, the entire staff of 18 is fantastic. I feel so blessed to work with them, and I love that there is truly an environment of ‘team’ and helping each other out,” Weber explains. “If a client needs water and her stylist is busy, someone else grabs it. That’s just how we treat each other and our clientele.” Timothy Weber is an established stylist and colorist, clocking more than 16 years of industry experience.

He has trained with internationally recognized stylists in several cities, including New York and Paris. His team members boast similar resumes, making for a talented roster of artists. “I have reached where I am with the support of many talented artists and mentors over the years, and I hope I can be that for others in their careers,” he says. “I feel strongly about creating a unique employment opportunity for our stylists; we want this to be a career, not a job. As such, we have plans to create a 401k plan with a match and a continued education

program. And we are extremely sensitive to family first — if your child is sick, you go home — no questions asked!” Timothy Weber Salon offers a wide range of services and features a pricing option that provides a tiered fee system for guests to choose from when booking. If you need a bit of a break on your fee, you can book with a junior stylist to receive a beautiful cut or color on a budget. The salon also offers nail and pedicure services, waxing and brow tinting, as well as massage services if you want a full day of pampered beauty. “I have a picture up front that reads ‘humble and kind,’” Weber says. “I came from humble beginnings, and I believe no one is better than anyone else. Anyone is welcome here, from any racial, cultural, or socio-economic background. We believe in being inclusive; it’s important to everyone at the salon.” Stephanie Lewis has been a client for nearly a decade. “I have always left the salon feeling confident, refreshed, and renewed,” she gushes. “For every important event in my life, whether it

was my wedding or our first pictures as a family after my daughter was born, Timothy has made me look and feel beautiful. He really treats his clients like family.”

“I came from humble beginnings, and I believe no one is better than anyone else. Anyone is welcome here.” Inherent in his desire to operate his salon was an opportunity to create an experience for both his clients and his stylists that is unrivaled in the city. His vision is that the experience is built upon continuing education and training on the latest trends for stylists as well as a front-end staff that cultivates a welcoming and relaxed atmosphere. He

wants his clients to feel at home when at the salon. And the Park Place locale is the perfect backdrop to foster that feeling. “What I love about Park Place are the local businesses and the vibe; it’s a real small-town feel,” Weber shares. “It’s also very collaborative. Many of the businesses here market and advertise for each other. It’s kind of like a second family.” While Weber hopes to have someday established a business he can operate part-time — and that will take him into retirement — he’s simply enjoying the moment right now. “For me, a rewarding day is a full, busy salon with lots of energy and laughter,” he says. “To see everyone happy and enjoying what they are doing, well, that means I’m doing something right.” See a full list of available services and book your appointment online at timothywebersalon.com. GOOD TASTES

Words by Gina Reardon | Photo by Melanie McDowell

That's Just Peachy Impromptu gatherings seem to be the order of the day during these summer months. Casual functions are the best ways to get together with friends, neighbors, or family. When my kids were little, our next-door neighbors had young sons who became great and inseparable companions with my kids, and we often shared casual weeknight or weekend dinners with the family. We joked about building a skywalk to link our two houses! So, the easy answer to the question, “Would you like to join us for burgers, chicken, ribs, or [insert meal here]” should be, “Yes, what can I bring?” And you should bring this! It’s a simple summer salad made with whatever greens you have on hand, stone fruit, berries, nuts, and crumbled goat cheese with a honey-balsamic vinaigrette you can whisk together in just a few minutes. (Or cheat by using bottled Brianna’s Blush Wine Vinaigrette … no judging here!)

Summer Peach Salad Yield: 6 to 8 servings

INGREDIENTS FOR THE SALAD

FOR THE DRESSING

12 cups mixed greens (spring greens, baby spinach, arugula, or assorted leaf lettuces), rinsed and spun dry

1 TB honey

1/2 small red onion sliced very thin 2 fresh peaches or nectarines (peaches blanched, plunged into an ice-water bath and peeled), sliced thin

3 TB balsamic vinegar salt and pepper to taste (I would start with 1 tsp salt, 1/2 tsp coarsely ground pepper) 1/2 cup mild olive oil

1/2 cup fresh blueberries 3/4 cup sliced or slivered almonds or pecans, lightly toasted 3 ounces goat cheese, crumbled at the last minute

DIRECTIONS Whisk together the honey, balsamic vinegar, salt, and pepper. In a very thin stream, whisk in the olive oil slowly until it is fully incorporated and the oil is fully emulsified. Taste and adjust salt and pepper as needed. Combine the greens and red onion and add just enough vinaigrette to lightly coat. Taste! Remember, you can always add more dressing if needed. Add peaches, blueberries, and nuts, then toss very lightly. Crumble the goat cheese over the top. Serve immediately and enjoy.

BECAUSE I SAID SO ...

Words by Julie Burton | Photo by Samantha Levi

HOW TO WRITE ABOUT YOUR CHILD COMEDIAN There’s nothing special about my kids. My kids are not super smart. They weren’t born with those types of genetics. They are not athletic because the lazy gene runs strong in my family. They also know how to awkward dance and they don’t play instruments. I’m really killing the gene pool. The only thing special about my kids is that they’re funny. Emma was 2 years old when I discovered the brilliantness spewing from her mouth. Emma said something funny. I can’t remember what she said but I remember my response. Me: Oh Emma, you’re such a comedian. Emma: I don’t change colors, mommy! I didn’t get it. Emma stared back at me and laughed. She looked at her arm. She lifted her shirt and looked at her tummy. Emma: I don’t change colors, mommy!

memory. I promise you — you’ll forget. Write it down as soon as you hear it. Use the notes app on your phone or keep a small notebook. Always end quotes with your kid. The humor comes from your kids. Let the kids have the last word. Don’t end the conversation with your comment or reaction. Let the reader react on their own. Four year olds are the best age. I wish I could send my kids back to age 4 for their quotes ... but then I remember I don’t like meltdowns either. My kids are 9 and 12. They still say funny things, although it’s not as innocent as a 4-year-old. I still say funny things at 36 and I wish someone would write them down for me. Every age is a different era. School-aged kids can be just as funny. Write how your kids talk. Mark Twain was a genius for writing Huck Finn in the first person. He perfectly captured Huck’s distinctive, youthful voice. Your kids have a voice. They don’t speak perfect grammar but, admit it, neither do you. Or me. Look at me. Writing all these half sentences. My English teachers would be cringing.

A chameleon! Emma thought I called her a chameleon. She didn’t know what a comedian was. But I did. I gave birth to a comedian. She’s been spitting out solid gold for the past 10 years. The difference between my funny kids and everyone else’s funny kids is nothing. My kids were not made from the loins of two stand-up comedians or even one stand-up comedian. I just happen to write down what my kids say. Your kids are funny too. Here’s how you can start collecting your own kid’s quotes: Listen. Listen to your kids when they’re in the other room or the car. Always keep an ear out to what they’re saying. They say the best things when they don’t think you’re listening. It’s better if you hide and watch them slightly panic when they realize you’re gone. Don’t worry, they’ll always find you. Talk. It’s OK to prompt them for a funny quote. Start a conversation about their opinion on, oh I don’t know, President Trump. Write it down. This might be the most important and most difficult to do. You will not remember what your kid said yesterday. You won’t remember what they said even 10 minutes ago. I realize I said my kids are not smart because of their genetics, but I have a great

It has a high alcohol content, which helps dry up breakouts. Plus, liquid sunscreen goes on thicker, providing better protection from the sun.

Facial cleansers take about 60 seconds to do its magic, so count the seconds before rinsing off.

3 G ive yourself a facial massage.

Doing so while you moisturize boosts circulation for a healthy radiance and improves absorption of all the beneficial ingredients.

4 B rush your hair before getting it wet.

If you’re wetting your hair, give it a good brushing beforehand so you don’t further tangle your hair when it gets wet.

Waiting until the end of your shower gives the warm water time to soften hair so it will come off more smoothly and gently.

Apply a thick coat before you hop in the shower, then let the steam do its thing. After you step out, gently wipe off the dead, loosened skin cells with a washcloth, and voila! Silky, smooth lips.

7 Put down the tweezers.

Many women tend to overpluck the inner and outer corners of their brows. A style that’s universally flattering? Brows that are an index-finger-width apart and extend past your eyes.
