WELCOME FROM THE EDITOR
BACK TO THE GRIND I CAN’T WAIT TO GO BACK TO SCHOOL! (Said no teacher, ever.) As the daughter of two teachers, August was always a tough month. While both my parents loved their jobs, they did not love going back to school in early August. In fact, when school supplies started filling the bins at our local stores, my mom always pretended like she didn’t seen them. “Mom, can I get these sparkly notebooks? How about this Trapper Keeper?” I’d ask in early July. Silence. “Mom?” *Crickets* And so it went. (Until August when she was forced to turn on her ears again.)

Later on, my sister became a teacher as well. It wasn’t until then that I realized a teacher’s summer is so much shorter than I’d noticed as a kid. They stay almost a week after school lets out to clean their rooms/move rooms and finish grades. And they start back to school the week before students do, at a minimum. Most put in hours over the summer here and there to make sure they’re not behind when they report back. It’s not nearly as long of a break as I’d once thought. So, for all the amazing teachers heading back to the classroom this week, we’re so grateful for you. And to celebrate, our Parenting column this month is all about teacher confessions — things you’ve always wanted parents and community members to know but may be too polite to say. My favorite was this one — which I know to be true first-hand after growing up in a house full of teachers:
What is something you wish more parents knew about your job? We go to bed worrying about them, wake up wondering about them, look back at them in yearbooks. Parents need to know how much their children mean to other people. It can be hard for a parent to understand that another adult, not related to them, can have their best interests at heart. Check out our Parenting section on page 36 for more teacher confessions. And from all of us at SIMPLYkc Magazine, a heartfelt thanks to all the teachers in our community!

AROUND TOWN
BY JULIE BURTON Photos / Samantha Levi
BEHIND THE AVENUES: THE MEANINGS OF KANSAS CITY STREET NAMES You drive past them often. You probably say their names every day. The street names that make up the Kansas City metro are ingrained into our local language. Native American namesakes are present, but most streets are named after prominent families that shaped Kansas City into what it is today. While some streets don’t need an explanation, such as State Line Road, others are not so obvious. We buried our noses into the old, local newspapers and magazines at the Johnson County Library and the Missouri Valley Special Collections at the Kansas City Public Library and uncovered the stories behind the street names.

STRANG LINE ROAD (KANSAS) William Strang Jr. was a railroad entrepreneur from New York who settled in Olathe, Kansas, in 1905. He created the Missouri and Kansas Interurban Railway, a trolley-like vehicle that ran on a 25-mile track from Olathe, Kansas, to Kansas City, Missouri. The railway was nicknamed the “Strang Line.” The Strang Line allowed an accessible connection between rural Johnson County and downtown Kansas City. This began the marks of Kansas City’s first suburbs, including the cities of Olathe, Overland Park, and Lenexa. Strang is considered the founder of Overland Park, Kansas.
BLACKBOB ROAD (KANSAS) In recent years, it has become trendy to name
streets after the Native Americans who first owned land in the area. Blackbob Road is named after the Native American Shawnee Chief, Blackbob. He is known for keeping his Shawnee tribe together and assisting other Shawnee tribes in negotiating land with the government. Chief Blackbob was one of the last to leave for the Native American territory. The Blackbob Reservation held acreage in southern Johnson County, near present-day 119th Street and Blackbob Road.
QUIVIRA ROAD (KANSAS) Quivira’s name dates back to 1541. The explorer, Francisco Vasquez de Coronado, named Quivira after a fictional tribe he sought out.
A Native American told Coronado that a wealthy civilization was located in the Great Plains. He was told the chief drank from golden cups. Coronado believed present-day Kansas was home to the “Seven Cities of Gold.” Coronado’s expedition set out on a quest to find the Quivira. The tribe he found in Kansas did not possess wealth or gold but Coronado did discover fertile land with a system of waterways and streams suitable for farming. Still, his expedition was considered a failure because he did not find the gold he was looking for.
ANTIOCH ROAD (KANSAS), NORTHEAST ANTIOCH ROAD (MISSOURI) This road is located in two different places. Antioch Church (organized in 1853) in the Northland is on Northeast Antioch Road, thus giving the road the name Antioch. The Antioch Road in Kansas may have been named after another Antioch church or simply for the city in the bible. Antioch Road in Kansas was originally named Chase Road after Elijah Cornell Chase. The Chase
family arrived from Rhode Island in 1869 and established Chase Financial Institution and Cornell University.
PERSHING ROAD (MISSOURI) Pershing Road was named after John Joseph Pershing, a general in the Army during World War I. He led his men to victory over the Germans by working with the French and British armies as one single unit. On Nov. 1, 1921, Pershing arrived in Kansas City to take part in the groundbreaking ceremony of the Liberty Memorial dedication, a National World War I Museum and Memorial.
WARD PARKWAY (MISSOURI) Ward Parkway is named after the Ward family. Seth Edmund Ward earned his money by trading oxen and supplies along the California-Oregon Trail at Fort Laramie in Wyoming. Ward traded in the Westport neighborhood of Kansas City in his earlier days.
refused to live at Fort Laramie. Ward purchased land where the Country Club Plaza now sits. Ward leased his east pasture to the Kansas City Country Club’s first golf course where Ward’s son, Hugh, was a founding member. Ward Parkway is named on the National Register of Historic Places for Hugh Ward.
ARMOUR ROAD (MISSOURI), ARMOUR BOULEVARD (MISSOURI) Simeon B. Armour, head of a meatpacking plant, was appointed to the Kansas City park board in 1892. Armour helped develop plans for a boulevard to run along 35th Street. The park board presented the plan to the Board of Parks Commissioners, which declined the plan due to being “impossible to execute.” Armour remained on the board until his death in 1899. In 1900, the boulevard was passed and named Armour Boulevard. You can still find Armour hot dogs, lunch meats, and Lunchmakers in grocery stores today.
He returned and settled in Kansas City in 1871 after his wife, Mary Frances McCarty,

APP OF THE MONTH
NAVIGATE PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION LIKE A LOCAL The gist: Visiting a new city and have no idea how to get around? The Citymapper – Bus, Tube, Rail app is your key to fitting right in with the locals. Free for both iOS and Android phones, the app provides step-by-step directions for walking, tube services, bus, bike, taxi, train, tram, and ferry, plus real-time updates and info on disruptions. Attention to the details is what makes this app so awesome. For instance, it can tell you where to sit in the subway car to ensure you’re as close as possible to your stop’s exit; it is integrated with Uber and tons of other apps (including the Apple Watch); plus it keeps track of your steps. At press time, the app covers 31 cities worldwide, including Chicago, Los Angeles, London, New York City, Paris, Rome, and Tokyo. The downside: This app is unavailable for Windows phones (there is a
Web version at citymapper.com). The list of cities covered are limited — for now. But developers are constantly adding cities, and you can vote for the next city at citymapper.com/cities.

Home Colors: The Ins and the Trends Paint color really can say it all. It can grab attention — in all the right or wrong ways — and it can make or break décor in any room of the house. And once painting is finished, it can be quite an ordeal to change it up. No surprise, then, that so many people feel stressed when choosing wall colors. So how do you choose the best fit? With an eye for detail … or outside help.
18
| SIMPLYKCMAG.COM
Color consultant Diane Stewart says choosing is as simple as looking at current décor and finding a mix that works. But that’s where a professional can really help. After you’ve pointed out your favorite belongings, she helps you determine the solution that best compliments those items. “In general, people keep the stuff they have and just want to paint around it,” says Stewart, founder of Color Sense Consulting. Completely redecorating a home — new knickknacks, wall décor, etc. — calls for a considerable budget. Adding a fresh coat of paint instead is a much more wallet-friendly option. But, Stewart stresses, “it has to be harmonious of what’s there.” As for trends, Stewart says each colorconsulting venture is a custom experience. But underlying tones often stay similar, she shares, such as earthy or autumn palates. This has shifted, albeit slightly, over the last few years from beige and browns. More vibrant colors, such as teals and reds, are a rare request, Stewart says. And although
she says she never tries to talk her clients into (or out of) a certain color, she instead suggests certain shades for different rooms. For instance, bright hues work best in smaller rooms with less clutter, such as a bathroom, office, or guest room. Calmer tones are better for larger, busier spaces, such as the kitchen or living room. THE OUTER SHELL Exterior home colors have gone darker in the last few years, says Tommy Nigro, owner of Nigro Painting Specialists. He and his team of painters custom coat homes in the KC area, while also providing repair services. “Dark earthy tones a re very popular,” Nigro explains. “Colors that look like dirt. That doesn’t sound attractive, but really rich browns have made a comeback.” He says these hues are his personal favorite as well. They add a classy, universal look to all styles of homes without being too trendy. In years prior, Nigro says homeowners opted for light colors for the house and dark trim. That’s since reversed. Most popular today, he

says, are dark browns with light-colored trim, which he has seen throughout the metro area. However, homeowners tend to choose lighter colors, like beige, when they are looking to sell their home, Nigro notes. “I think they just feel comfortable and safe [with light colors].” This also allows new buyers to more easily update to their preference, he adds. One drawback of a darker exterior color is that you will have to paint your home more often. Because it attracts more UV light, Nigro says, a dark home typically has 75 percent of the lifespan of a lighter color paint. Finally, it is important to note that many homeowner’s associations have regulations concerning house colors. Many associations require that you seek approval before painting your home, which means bright or “loud” colors might not get the pass. Paint colors are one of the first things you notice about any home. Follow these experts’ advice — while following your own taste — to find the best possible home décor outcome.

much more. We may feel as though we should move our parents into our homes and do the same for them when they are no longer able to care for themselves. Caring for an aging parent is a sensitive topic. While it may provide many benefits, it also can bring its own share of drawbacks.

You may want to consider cohabiting before making the final decision to move an aging parent into nursing care. There are many things to consider when moving a loved one into your home, and it is not a decision to be taken lightly. Here are some things to consider: 1. What kind of care will your parent need? What illness does he currently have, if any? Keep in mind that when you move your elderly loved one into your home, his health situation will only decline — not improve — as he ages. 2. What amount of supervision and/or assistance can you provide for your relative? If your parent has health insur-
ance, she may qualify for home-based medical care. Check with Home Care Physicians to see if she qualifies. Also, you can get home care services by calling the Department of Aging and Disability Services in Kansas or the Department of Health & Senior Services in Missouri. 3. I s your home large enough to house your parent and his belongings, as well as older-adult-friendly or handicap-accessible? If not, would you be able to do any necessary renovations in order to make it so? 4. W ill becoming a caregiver drain you financially, or can your elderly parent contribute to your finances (by paying rent, paying for any necessary renovations, or contributing to the cost of care)? Studies by the National Alliance for Caregiving (NAC) show that family caregivers spend about $5,500 a year on caregiving. 5. W ill you and your family (spouse and/or children) be able to adjust to any lifestyle changes resulting from the move? Will your parent be able to be dependent and live by your household rules? Keep in mind how well you all currently get along. 6. W ill your older relative have a social life outside of your family? Will she be able to participate in any activities besides watching TV all day? You might consider bringing her to a nearby facility that provides activities, such as recreational and social programs, exercise, and live entertainment.

De-Stress Your Summer Hair The summer months take a major toll on your hair. From chlorine to sun exposure and humidity, we ladies are in a constant battle to keep our manes in check. I spoke with Nancy Greer, owner of Lumine Salon (luminesalon.com) in Waldo, to find her favorite tricks and products to prevent summer hair meltdown.

Also, if you love the water but prefer to pack light, Greer offers a little secret piece of advice: “If you are in a pinch, run a little
sunscreen through your hair,” Greer says. “This shouldn’t be done on a regular basis because of buildup, but it works great in a time of need.” Greer also suggests that you use products with built-in UV protection, like the Oribe Shampoo and Conditioner for Beautiful Color.

Many blondes suffer from the dreaded green-hair issue by the end of the summer. Greer says the best way to keep your blonde from turning green is by rinsing your hair with cool water and combing through conditioner prior to jumping in the pool. This will close the cuticles to prevent as much chlorine to be absorbed in the hair. After swim-

ming, shampoo the hair with a clarifying shampoo like R+Co Oblivion. It is best to use a clarifying shampoo after each trip to the pool or beach for best results.
We are always told to wash our hair less, but during the summer months, it’s hard when you’re hot and sweaty! Greer loves the Kevin Murphy Fresh Hair spray to absorb sweat and oil from hair in the summer months or after a workout. It comes out a powdery white, but don’t worry if you’re a brunette. It quickly dissolves into your hair after you rub the root where you applied the product.

You can apply this product section by section during your blowout, or wait until the end of your blowout, to create a weightless barrier or “raincoat” for your hair so it will fight fizz during the humid months. And, this product contains UV protection, which makes it a double bonus!

Considered the most common type, this involves long strokes,
Deep tissue This type is designed to release tension by administering slow strokes and deep finger pressure. Deep tissue is so named as it focuses on the deeper layers of muscle tissue in the body. The strokes and pressure either follow or go across the grain of muscles and tendons. It is most commonly used for muscle damage from an injury, like whiplash or back strain.
Chair This massage is for the upper body. It is done through your clothes while you are seated upright in a portable chair. You can find this type of massage in salons and spas, and even in the airport and malls.
Sports therapy This sports massage focuses on warming up an athlete to prevent athletic injury, keep the body flexible, or help rehabilitate injured muscles. This is especially helpful for runners and any highly physically active people who play sports as well as dancers and people who have manual labor jobs. Some forms of massage can leave you feeling a bit sore the next day. However, the massage shouldn’t typically be painful or uncomfortable. If any part of your massage doesn’t feel right or comfortable, or is painful, make sure to speak up right away. Most serious problems can come from too much pressure during massage. Another tip from the AMTA: Ensure you are fully hydrated before and after the massage. Massage releases toxins that have built up in your blood stream, and drinking lots of water is ideal for flushing out all of these toxins and eliminating them from your body. Drinking plenty of water also will help you feel better the next day. A hydrated body is a happy,

healthy body. So, go ahead and grab that bottle of water they offer you after the massage. In spite of its great benefits, massage is not meant to replace your normal medical care. Make sure to inform your doctor that you are trying massage so he or she is fully aware of your health history. There are a few risks of massage as well. According to the Mayo Clinic, massage may not be appropriate if you have any type of bleeding disorder, take blood-thinning medication, or have any kind of burn or open wounds due to injury or infection. Other conditions in which massage may be risky are: deep vein thrombosis, fractures, severe osteoporosis, and severe thrombocytopenia (a condition in which your blood has a lower than normal number of blood cell fragments called platelets). Always make sure to discuss the pros and cons of massage with your physician, particularly if you are pregnant, have cancer, or any other sort of unexplained pain.

GO FOR THE GOLD: TAKE CONTROL OF YOUR LIFE WITH MENTAL TOUGHNESS TECHNIQUES
With the Olympics taking place this month, many of us will watch these amazing athletes and wonder, “How do they do that?!” Sure, most are just naturally gifted. But we all know people who have great talent yet don’t succeed to the same degree these exceptional individuals do. So what is it that sets the Olympians apart? Is it possible to apply some of the techniques that elite athletes use to the lives of mere mortals? Sports psychology is dubbed the “science of success” because it studies the four mental toughness skills: motivation, confidence, concentration, and emotional and physiological control. Licensed professional counselor Jeff Miner, head coach/therapist of the Kansas Citybased Triumph Program, has more than 22 years of experience working with individuals, groups, and high-level athletes to help them establish and achieve their goals. He has contracted with the United States

Olympic Committee, the Utah Jazz basketball team, golfers, soccer and tennis players, and currently works with MMA athletes. Athletes in Business is a group of current and former athletes considered to be “higher performers” such as high-level salespeople or CEOs who are “hungry” and want to improve their present game of life. The group, which Miner started, focuses on how to translate athletic skills to business. He notes that most of the members are coachable and trainable, and want to be held accountable. They also tend to be externally driven rather than internally motivated and often put pressure on themselves to be perfect, a trait that isn’t necessarily helpful to them in the world of business. Miner’s work with these high performers involves trying to help them understand and change the external motivation into one that’s more internal. Once he figures out what’s going on in an athlete’s personal
life, he can work with them to determine their goals and then hold them accountable to those goals. Using visual imagery, biofeedback, and neurofeedback — or the ability to relax or slow down the mind on command — he is able to help them overcome performance anxiety. Miner offers these tips for developing mental toughness that anyone can apply to everyday life, no matter your goals or occupation:
Be willing to ask for help. Most people are afraid to do this and don’t want to be held accountable. Find someone to help you define realistic goals and set up concrete steps to achieve them. This is best done with a therapist or personal trainer rather than someone who may have strings attached to the outcome (a boss, for example). Consider joining a support group with others who have similar challenges.
Accountability and creating habits is key.
Establish routines or habits and commit to them. The difference between success and failure is the commitment you make to yourself. Seeking the services of a professional can help you to learn how not to get caught up in your own story or engage in self-sabotage.
Use competition as motivation.
There are healthy and unhealthy ways to view competition. Remove stress and take the pressure off by competing against yourself. It’s not about winning or losing; it’s about you becoming a better person. You generally are willing to do things you enjoy. As a reminder, Miner has a sign in his office: “Let’s put the fun back in the game.” Confidence is multilayered and usually based on success. Once you achieve reasonable goals, your confidence increases.
Emotional control is about slowing your mind down. You learn how to deal with unpleasant emotions such as stress, anxiety, or boredom. “We have become experts at avoiding feelings,” Miner explains. Indulging in unhealthy escapes actually stems from feeling powerless over your emotions, he says. Rather than dealing with negative feelings in unhealthy ways such as overeating, overworking, drugs, or alcohol — tools that provide temporary comfort, relief, or escape — you learn how to deal with emotions in healthy ways that don’t cause more problems.
LOOKING FOR A FUN WAY TO TAKE THAT FIRST STEP? According to Psychology Today, the ability to bombard your unconscious mind with one single positive phrase is one of the most effective and easy-to-use psychological skills available to anyone. Local small-business owner Laura Schmidt is such a fan of positive affirmations she actually founded a company to spread the word. Schmidt knows that your subconscious mind is most receptive early in the morning and late at night, so she decided to put positive affirmations on the toes of socks. On the notes to self® socks website Schmidt shares, “I like the idea that someone wearing the socks sees a phrase such as ‘I am strong’ first thing in the morning when they are putting on their shoes, and at the end of the day.” The positive reminder, written in present tense, is there all day long, whether you choose to share that message with others or keep it private. Either way, that positive phrase is influencing your thoughts and actions.

Quality Time With Canines Sometimes the best therapy is time spent with a friend. It doesn’t have to be time with a human friend, though. Dog therapy is a popular and effective form of therapy used in hospitals, nursing homes, and schools. Time spent with dogs benefit you both mentally and physically, including lower blood pressure, a decrease in aggressive behaviors, and a decrease in stress or anxiety.
give companionship and attention. Any breed of dog, including a mixed breed, can be a therapy dog, but there are some steps you must take to make your pet a registered therapy dog.
How does my dog become certified? If your dog is calm, friendly, accepting of strangers, obedient, comfortable around adults and children, comfortable in changing environments, and able to get along with other dogs, you may have a good candidate for a therapy dog. Here are the steps to getting certified:
42
What qualifies as a therapy dog?
Your dog will need to be registered with the American Kennel Club (AKC). Have Fido’s AKC Registration Number (for purebreds with registered parents), PAL Number (for purebreds without registered parents), or Canine Partners Number (for mixed breeds or nonregisterable) ready. Visit akc.com for info about this.
Therapy dogs are different than service dogs (which are specially trained to perform specific tasks for a person with a disability). Therapy dogs accompany their owners or a volunteer to a hospital, nursing home, school, or similar environment to
Bring your dog to a certified dog-training program, through organization such as Pets for Life Inc. or Greater Kansas City Dog Training Club. These programs train your dog as well as administer an AKC-certified test.
| SIMPLYKCMAG.COM
Your dog must complete a certain amount of visits and pass the test to receive its therapy dog title, which ranges from AKC Therapy Dog Novice (10 visits) to AKC Therapy Dog Distinguished (400 visits). Send in your AKC Therapy Dog Title Application (found on AKC’s website) with its registration and training information to the AKC. Once you receive approval from the AKC, your dog will be a certified therapy pet.
Where are therapy dogs used? Tons of places! For example, Children’s Mercy in Kansas City recently began using two golden retrievers to make rounds like nurses and visit with the kids in their rooms. The friendly dogs bring comfort in a way that humans often cannot. There are also therapy-dog programs in other hospitals, nursing homes and schools. These programs strive to bring joy to patients and students where they are and let their day be brightened by the comfort of dogs. These programs include MoKan Pet Partners and Pets for Life Inc.

Grandma’s Barbeque Baked Beans Yield: 15 servings
Ingredients
Directions
1/2 pound chopped bacon
Set your oven to 325 degrees. Cut bacon and onions into quarter-inch pieces and cook both ingredients on medium heat until the bacon is crisp and onions are transparent.
1 cup chopped onions 2 cups barbecue sauce 2 cups dark-brown sugar 1/2 pound chopped meat (brisket, turkey or ham)
Add the barbecue sauce and brown sugar and continue to cook on low/medium heat for 25 minutes. Add the chopped meat and beans and mix thoroughly. Place the mixture in a baking pan and cook in the oven for 45 minutes. Stir the baked beans before serving.
3 32-ounce cans of pork and beans
Meet Lane Dougherty, kitchen manager of Stroud’s, has worked at Stroud’s for the last 33 years and loves every minute of it. He’s proud that Zagat’s rates Stroud’s as “excellent.” “It has been great to have the opportunity to grow the brand with the same people, recipes, and even some of the same pans and burners that have been with us since the Troost days,” he says.

Hot Steppers One of my favorite parts about fall is the shoes. This season, we are seeing the return of trends from the past and a twist on classic styles. Here is what to look for in shoes this season. Pointed / 1
Chunky / 2
Flats / 3
Metallics / 4
Booties / 5
Pointy toes are making a comeback in everything from flats to booties. Heights range from kitten heels to stilettos.
The block heel and chunky platforms popular in the ’90s are back. These look great paired with a crop flare pant, which also is returning this season.
You will see flats of all kinds, such as mules and slides. Flats are great because they combine style and comfort all in one! Pair with skinny pants or jeans to complete your look.
The runways featured many metallic hues, such as gold and silver. Metallics are a great neutral that mix well with your fall wardrobe.
Booties will again be the must-have shoe this season. You will find all heel heights, pointed toes, chunky heels, and different embellishments. Look for buckle details, studs, velvet, suede, and woven-leather details.
You can find these shoes at Alysa Rene Boutique in Park Place (alysarene.com, 913.906.9477).

CHROME EXTENSIONS
you must try
1
Eyecare If you stare at a computer screen most of the day, Eyecare will help relieve the strain on your peepers. Every 20 minutes, this customizable extension provides a reminder to look away from your screen, close your eyes, and walk around for a minute. Here’s to your health!
2 Tab Snooze
Are the hundreds of tabs open on your computer slowing it down? Hit the Tab Snooze button to close them now and bring them back at a later time (such as in a couple hours, tomorrow, or next week). The app will recommend you to snooze tabs you haven’t used in a while, and provide notifications when a snoozed tab is about to “wake up.”

7
DO IT!
You’re reading an article and come across a word you don’t know. Rather than opening up a dictionary in another tab, the Google Dictionary extension allows you to simply double click on the word to retrieve its meaning. Bonus: You can click on the speaker icon to hear how it’s pronounced.
So you’ve updated your Facebook status, browsed trending topics on Twitter, Googled yourself, cyber-stalked your ex … but haven’t gotten ANY work done. This customizable extension will help increase your productivity by limiting the amount of time you can spend on time-wasting websites. Once your allotted time has been used up, the sites you’ve blocked will be inaccessible for the rest of the day.
Another eye-saving extension is F.lux, which adjusts the brightness and tint of your monitor based on the time of day. Research suggests that blue-tinted light can mess up your circadian rhythm and affect your quality of sleep. As your bedtime approaches, your screen color will get warmer and darker, which makes going to bed after using your tablet all night so much easier.
You want to appear confident and capable in your emails to colleagues — but are your word choices undermining your message? Just Not Sorry is a spell check of sorts, only it warns you when you use certain words or phrases in your Gmail messages and tells you how your phrasing might be perceived.
Need a little pep talk? With just a click of your mouse, “Transformers” star Shia LaBeouf appears on your screen to deliver a short — yet intense — motivational speech.
