EDITOR’S NOTE
BACK TO SCHOOL … BACK TO THE GRIND I’m not sure what parent doesn’t rejoice once August rolls around. I do love the summer months, but I look forward to not having to juggle camps and babysitters ... Or my kids asking for a constant stream of activities. I feel like my sanity returns once we get back into a routine again. Back to school means new gear and clothes for the kids. Although my kids wear a uniform, we do have fun shopping for new sneakers, coats, and backpacks for the school year. I am sharing some adorable backto-school ideas from The Little House in my “must haves” column on the next page.

WHAT, WHERE Meet Bree Ginden
WHO:
BREE GINDEN WHAT: Bree is the co-owner of Raw Power Fitness Studio (rawpowerkc.com) in Overland Park. Raw Power is a studio with real women, compassionate and motivating instructors, and a wide variety of workouts. She’s married with two boys and is a longtime fitness and nutrition enthusiast with multiple certifications, including both personal training and nutrition coaching. Bree is also an actor and model at Moxie Talent.
WHERE: FAVORITE PLACE TO EAT IN KC Rye is a longtime favorite because I’m a sucker for a good pork chop and they have, hands down, the best one in town. If I were going for a meal other than dinner, Chez Elle is a place I swoon for. So many crepes! I can never decide which one to get (although I usually end up with the Acropolis or Le Franco). And the oversized almond milk latte always hits the spot at breakfast. FAVORITE DRINK IN KC My husband will tell you I’m pretty lame in this department! My favorite place is wherever my friends are, which is usually on our patio, in our basement, or someone else’s patio. For business meetings, my partner Susan and I like to wrap up an occasional Friday afternoon on Coach’s upper deck with a cocktail. For a great coffee in OP, I’ll hit Parisi Cafe in Park Place for their perfect Americano. FAVORITE PLACE TO SHOP IN KC Because of my job, 80 percent of my wardrobe is workout wear. My favorites are Athleta, Lucy, and Lululemon. For casual wear, I really like Evereve, and they have great customer service there to help you find just what you need. If I need something fancy for a special event, my first stop would be a friend’s closet! My friends have some pretty good taste. FAVORITE HIDDEN GEMS IN KC Sweet Caroline’s in Stanley is great for treats and ice cream. (It’s probably my kids’ favorite place of all time.) The Overland Park Arboretum is truly beautiful for a walk outside. We go to their candlelight walk every December and it’s a great place to geocache with the kids in the summer. FAVORITE PLACES TO TAKE OUT-OF-TOWN GUESTS A Royals game and barbecue from LC’s would be my No. 1 choices, but outside of baseball season, we’d have to make a trip to the Country Club Plaza, do some world-class shopping, and have a great dinner.

KACIE HOW TO BE MORE ASSERTIVE
I always feel like I am a doormat when it comes to my relationships. What are some tips you recommend?
You just took the first step to being a more assertive person by asking this question! Being assertive can be a great asset to have as long as you don’t become bossy or aggressive about it. Here are some guidelines I always follow: • Allow yourself to take a stand without being angry about it. • Speak from your heart. Say what is on your mind but also consider the other person’s feelings. • Control your emotions, but do challenge people who speak against you or your rights. You will get more comfortable the more you use your voice!
If you have any questions you’d like Kacie to answer, submit them to our managing editor at: ashley@simplykcmag.com.

Not quite summer and not quite fall — August is the hardest month in which to dress. Our recommendation? Invest in simple, classic pieces you can wear separately, and layer the items during autumn. Rich golden hues, soft blues, and crisp navy and white make for the perfect transitional palette.

Local Event Offers Awareness About Sex Trafficking in KC
For most of us, the Midwest is associated with a laid-back, peaceful lifestyle. The heartland of America has long been known for its rolling fields, expansive sunsets, and relaxed culture. But even in this picturesque region, sex trafficking is thriving. The truth is sex trafficking is taking place in every community, no matter what the economic makeup. This is why Shawnee Mission Health and the Seventh-Day Adventist Church have partnered with Veronica’s Voice, a local organization work-

ing on behalf of sexually exploited women, to host the “Hear Their Voices” event on Sept. 9 and 10. The event will include presentations, musical performances, children’s activities, and original children’s music. “Hear Their Voices will be a way to share some encouragement and hope,” explains Ivona Bernard, one of the organizers of the event, “but also to inform our community of how sex trafficking looks in today’s society and how it looks in America, which is very different from how international sex trafficking often looks.” Veronica’s Voice aims to give hope to those trapped in the sex trafficking industry. The nonprofit was created by Kristy D. Childs, one of the event speakers, to raise awareness of and combat sex trafficking in KC. “Veronica’s Voice is a voice for the sexually exploited,” explains Childs, who is
a survivor of sex trafficking. “I ran away from an abusive home environment and, by the age of 12, I started hitchhiking to escape it. Initially my prostitution started with truck drivers. I had no idea it was prostitution. I just wanted to eat and escape, and they gave me rides and fed me, but made me feel obligated to perform sex acts. From the age of 12 until 36, I was trapped in that life.” Childs did finally escape, though. “I ended up pregnant and went to abort my son,” she continues. “I was so panicked about being pregnant that I was suicidal. I just wanted to check out of the world because I couldn’t find my way out.” But Childs couldn’t convince herself to go through with the abortion. Fearing she would have a miscarriage, she went to the emergency room. Childs remembers lying on
the ultrasound table and feeling hope rush into her. She was not immediately freed, but she found a direction. “I started only working one day a week and with another girl, I broke my dependency on pimps and I started going to school,” she explains. “This plan that seems so simple now, in retrospect was so difficult to find. I think it was difficult because I didn’t think I could do it. I had been told I was stupid for so long that I believed it.”
that offers up to two years of free transitional housing, food, and basic necessities in a supportive, nonjudgmental environment. “It has always been Kristy’s dream,” says Bishop, “to have a home where the women can come — a safe place to live — and have the opportunity to live life, focus, regroup, and figure out ‘Where do I want to go? What is my goal?”
HEAR THEIR VOICES EVENT DETAILS

Taking place over two days in September, Hear Their Voices includes these events: • Sept. 9: Symposi-Concert Jack Reardon Convention Center, 520 Minnesota Ave., KCK 7:30 am This concert features a silent auction, choral and small-group musical performances, and inspiring presentations from Renee Battle Brooks and Kristy D. Childs. • Sept. 10: Community Expo G. Alexander Bryant Youth Center, 3301 Parallel Pkwy., KCK 2–5 pm The expo features interactive workshops for teens and adults, activities for kids, Happy Bear from the Sunflower House, and original music from Mighty Magic Pants. Learn more about the event at heartheirvoices.org and veronicasvoice.org. Ivona Bernard (at left), of Seventh-day Adventist churches in Kansas City, and Terrell Bishop, coordinator for Magdalene KC, are two of the organizers of the Hear Their Voices event.
In 1988, she moved back to Kansas City to be closer to family. “I was still working the streets and this little girl who was also on the streets kept telling me all about herself, but I didn’t want to get involved,” Childs shares. “This girl was Veronica — 4 foot 11, full of life. And then she said some things that made me go, ‘Oh my gosh, this is me,’ and I connected with her. I was kind of like a mother for her.” Unfortunately, prostitution led to Veronica’s murder in 1993 at the age of 21. She was found strangled in Penn Valley Park in Kansas City, Missouri. “I carry that in my heart,” Child says. “I named the organization after her to honor her and keep her story alive. She will always be in my heart and my mind.” Veronica’s story has stayed alive through the work of Veronica’s Voice in the metro. The organization helps women get off the streets, find jobs, and learn life skills. Terrel Bishop oversees Magdalene KC, a program through Veronica’s Voice

HUSBAND-WIFE CHIROPRACTIC TEAM OFFERS WELLNESS SOLUTIONS

hen Drs. Melinda and Mike Trump tell people they’ve worked together in the same chiropractic office for 13 years, a common response is: “Don’t you get tired of seeing each other so much?” They don’t. Maybe it’s because they’re both so passionate about their work. (They are.) Or because they like each other so much. (They do.) “We don’t see each other that much — one or both of us is usually treating patients,” Melinda says, with a quick laugh. “But really, we’re a great team. We get to support each other at home and at work.”

Work is Trump Chiropractic & Acupuncture, where the two offer chiropractic (both specializing in Activator Methods Technique — more on that later), acupuncture, cranial work, and more. Yes, they did go to the same chiropractic school, but their history goes back even further than that; they were high-school sweethearts. After graduation, Mike got a job in the outpatient clinic at Cleveland Chiropractic College. When Melinda was working on her degree there, Mike decided his path was also chiropractic. They bring two very different backgrounds and viewpoints on chiropractic to the practice. Melinda got her first adjustment when she was just 3 months old. She
had been born with a condition where her neck was stuck to one side. It was common at that time for doctors to wait until a child was about 1 year old to see if the condition would correct itself. If it didn’t, the doctor would cut the trapezius muscle. Her mom’s chiropractor had another idea. “My mom tells it like a miracle,” Melinda says. “I was a colicky, unhappy baby. After I got my first adjustment, I smiled for the first time, slept well, and woke up happy. My dad was like, ‘What did you do to the baby?’”
Mike got his first adjustment as an employee at the Cleveland Chiropractic College outpatient clinic. After seeing success story after success story, he wanted to try it himself. He noticed the benefits right away. Most people go to a chiropractor when they’re in pain, which is often weeks, months, or even years after a subluxation (misalignment of the vertebrae) occurs. “Pain is the last symptom to present when there’s a problem and the first to
“Pain is the last symptom to present when there’s a problem and the first to go away. If you’re not feeling pain, it doesn’t necessarily mean nothing is wrong.” It took a several visits, but Melinda’s condition was fixed, and she’s been seeing a chiropractor regularly ever since.
go away,” Melinda says. “If you’re not feeling pain, it doesn’t necessarily mean nothing is wrong.”
Drs. Mike and Melinda Trump also provide nutritional and supplement counseling.
Many conditions shrugged off as “normal” related to age or other factors, such as arthritis and aches and pains can be prevented or helped with chiropractic care, she notes. “We’ve been seeing [Melinda and Mike] for over 12 years,” says patient Annie Alexander. “My kids, who are 11 and 8 now, have been seeing them since birth. We are actually a four-generation family seeing them both for chiropractic and acupuncture. My mom and my grandfather are going now too.” Drs. Melinda and Mike are both certified in Activator Methods Technique. This technique uses a small, powerful tool to correct subluxations in a much less invasive way. Activator Methods is a 50-year-old chiropractic technique that delivers a consistent, gentle thrust. The Activator adjusting tool is a spring-loaded, adjusting instrument with multiple settings that can be used to tailor treatments to your pain level, body type, and area of the body being treated. “I think by nature most of us tense up a little when we’re about to get adjusted,” Melinda says. “With the Activator, patients are more relaxed.” With Activator Methods, results are just as good — if not better — due to the smaller, more specific area that the Activator can treat.
Dr. Mike uses the Activator Adjusting Instrument on a patient to deliver a gentle impulse force to the spine with the goal of restoring motion to the targeted spinal vertebra.

CAPSULE ENDOSCOPY: SOMETHING TO SMILE ABOUT IN THE FIGHT AGAINST COLORECTAL CANCER?
R
emember when you were a kid and you couldn’t wait to grow up? And how, once you did, it wasn’t quite what you thought it would be like? Numerous surprises — some good, others not so much — presented themselves once you reached adulthood. Take the colonoscopy, for example: an unwelcome reality of adult life that, for many, falls squarely in the “not so much” category. Colorectal cancer is listed by the National Cancer Institute as the third most common type of nonskin cancer for men (after prostate and lung cancers) as well as women (after breast and lung cancers), and the second leading cause of cancer death in the U.S. after lung cancer. Most colorectal cancers begin as a polyp, a growth in the tissue lining the inner surface of the colon or rectum. Thankfully, a number

of screening tests have been developed to detect these polyps during the early stages so that once removed, colon cancer can be prevented. The American Cancer Society (ACS) believes prevention of the occurrence of colorectal cancer, not merely catching it early, should be the main motivation for getting tested. Experts generally agree that the traditional colonoscopy is the most effective weapon when it comes to detecting polyps likely to develop into cancer. The ACS recommends both men and women at average risk for the disease undergo their first colonoscopy at age 50 with a repeat test every 10 years. Persons with an increased individual risk or a family history of the development of colorectal and other related diseases are advised to begin testing earlier and may require more frequent follow-up tests. Despite this procedure’s ability to save lives, it’s not without its unpleasantries. For starters, there’s the preparation you undergo prior to this test. You must follow a special diet and use a laxative to cleanse the colon and rectum of any residue that may obscure the view during the exam. During the procedure itself, a colonoscope — a thin, flexible lighted tube — is inserted into the rectum and advanced along the entire length of the colon. A tiny video camera at the tip of the colonoscope sends images to an external monitor
that enables doctors to examine the lining of the colon. If necessary, instruments can be passed through a channel in the colonoscope to take biopsies or remove polyps or other areas of abnormal tissue. Although you’re awake throughout, you are given a sedative to make the procedure more tolerable yet still allow you to respond to questions. Once finished, it may take a full day for the sedatives to completely wear off. So, you’re advised to have someone else drive you home afterward and not to return to work the rest of the day. Not your idea of a good time? Precisely why many end up delaying this important first test. While traditional colonoscopy is still considered to be the gold standard test for polyp detection, less invasive alternatives are emerging in the fight against colorectal cancer. Capsule endoscopy, for example, is proving to be especially useful for examining the small intestine, an area that isn’t as easily reached with traditional colonoscopies. It also has been approved for the screening of colon polyps when a colonoscopy could not be completed. Similar to traditional colonoscopy, this test also uses a tiny wireless camera with its own light source to capture images of the digestive tract. But instead of being inside a tube, the camera is contained within a capsule about the size of a large vitamin pill that, once swallowed, travels through the digestive tract. It then sends thousands of images to a belt-type recorder worn around the waist. Prep for capsule endoscopy of the small intestine may include fasting for 12 hours before the test, delaying any medications you may be taking, and the possible use of a laxative to enhance the quality of the images. If the colon is being examined, twice the usual amount of prep may be necessary. The test is considered complete after eight hours or when the camera capsule appears in the toilet after a bowel movement, whichever comes first. In addition to the ease of the procedure itself, this method requires no sedation. One drawback, however, is that the lack of a tube like the one used in traditional colonoscopy means any polyps discovered cannot be removed during the same procedure. This is one of the reasons the new test is less useful for examining the large colon. The bottom line? Talk to your doctor to determine which procedure is best for your individual situation as well as how frequently the test should be repeated.

ROBBED! I was robbed. I was ripped off. Now there needs to be revenge. I had a garage sale. It was my first one. I’m a believer in signs before impending doom. My sign was at 7:30 a.m. the day of my garage sale. I opened my garage door and looked at my blank slate — an open driveway. It was ready to be filled with tables full of house decor, books, American Girl doll accessories, and kids’ clothes. There were paintings, dining room chairs, and a twin bed. I walked down the driveway to post my Garage Sale sign, and BOOM — the omen — a pile of dog poo in the middle of my driveway. I kicked the small logs with my shoe. It smeared because it rained the night before. I ran inside the house and grabbed paper towels. There I was, at 7:42 a.m., scrubbing dog poo off concrete like Cinderella. The day went well. I didn’t even need to haggle because I lowballed every item. A woman asked me if the American Girl earring holders were American Girl’s brand. I said yes and showed her. She bought one for her daughter. I looked at the other holder after she left and thought, “Oh, she must have

BEAUTY

• Modern metallics: One of the biggest trends right now is where metallic powder is pressed onto regular or gel polish, leaving behind a holographic hue. Metallics can be used in all types of nail art, or worn on all 10 nails like polish. •A ccent nail: “This is a great way to spice up a mani without going crazy with nail art on every nail,” Robinson says. “It only involves two nails and looks spectacular.”
CELEBRATE SUMMER’S LAST HURRAH WITH YOUR NEXT MANI/PEDI Whether your plans include Sunday brunch or an evening out, a last-minute trip to the lake or a beachy vacation destination, there are still plenty of opportunities to celebrate summer and explore the many different mani/pedi options that are hot right now. Terri Robinson, a cosmetologist at Oliver’s Salon in Overland Park with more than 25 years of experience, shares some of the trends she’s currently seeing for tips and toes:
40
| SIMPLYKCMAG.COM
• Embellished cuticles: Also known as “shadow nails,” this cool trend involves decorating the cuticle area with metallic paint, jewels, lines, or polka-dots. •G raphic French: “Think of this as a French mani with a twist,” suggests Robinson. “Rather than simply a natural-colored nail with white tip, try contrasting colors, metallics, graphic shapes, or even negative space.” • Color blocking: This is a quick technique done with a tape guide to create geometric shapes on each nail using several different polish colors. •D ipped: This is neither a style nor nail art, but actually a process. Nails are dipped into a powder to form a thin layer of acrylic over the nail plate. Robinson says Oliver’s offers an organic version of the powder that lasts two weeks or longer.
•N atural look: Try polishes like the “beautiful line of earthy neutrals from Smith & Cult,” she explains. “It delivers a high performance with their exclusive ‘top 8-free’ formula, which is developed without the eight most common chemicals found in most nail polish brands.” Not familiar with these trends and need a visual? Robinson recommends taking a look at Pinterest. “It’s a great resource for exploring your options,” she says. “And it gives you an actual picture to take to your appointment.” If you prefer to keep your nails au natural, but you struggle to keep them happy and healthy, Cassie Wynn of HOOPLA Studio (located in Fairway and Leawood) suggests an “in the buff” mani or pedi in which a threeway buffer is used but no polish is applied once the nails are trimmed and filed. The buffing of the natural oils in your nails creates a shiny effect. Wynn also recommends HOOPLA’s recently launched Treatment Collection to help keep nails healthy. Created to strengthen, heal, and treat your nails as well as deliver a gel-like mani/pedi with longer lasting color hold, each of the four treatment options features HOOPLA’s “5-free” formulation (developed without the five most common chemicals found in most nail polish brands).

Simple Sorbet for Lazy Summer Evenings
44
| SIMPLYKCMAG.COM
As the bright summer sun lingers high in the sky, we yearn for seasonal foods that are easy to prepare and leave us as much time as possible to enjoy late summer bounty and each other. The memory of picking ripe blackberries among the wild, thorny bushes that grew along the roadside threatening to scratch our forearms, busy buzzing bees swirling about, is one that always surfaces when I prepare this simple blackberry sorbet. Bursting with flavor, dazzling to behold and cool on the tongue, it is the perfect finish to any summer meal.
Blackberry Sorbet Yield: 1 quart
Ingredients
Directions
3 cups fresh blackberries, rinsed
Combine blackberries, sugar, and lemon juice in the bowl of a food processor or blender and puree until smooth. Add lemon juice, heavy cream, and raspberry liqueur and mix until just combined. Pour into the canister of an ice cream freezer, and freeze according to manufacturer’s directions. Remove the airtight container, cover, and freeze until firm.

APP OF THE MONTH
PAY YOUR FRIENDS WITHOUT EVER EXCHANGING CASH The gist: Most banks offer their own money-transfer apps, but the popular app among Millennials is Venmo. This app, acquired by
PayPal four years ago, is free to download and lets you send and receive cash from friends. After creating an account, you fill out your profile with info such as debit card details, linking directly to a bank account, and connecting with friends already on the platform. Entering more info raises the amount of money you can send or receive at one time, from a $300 weekly cap to $3,000. One unique feature of Venmo is that it’s the only app that lets you make your transactions visible to your contacts. You can even choose to share your transactions on Facebook, if you’d like. But it’s easy to restrict visibility to “participants only.” Venmo works on iOS, Android, and Windows phones.

1
WEST BOTTOMS You’ve likely heard of the West Bottoms — the place for antiquing in KC. The buildings there were mostly abandoned in the 1950s due to a devastating flood, but there has been a resurgence in the last decade or so. This area has always been a playground for explorers and photographers. If you love graffiti, you’ll discover work from Scribe, Gear, and more.
2
CLIFF DRIVE Located in one of Kansas City’s first wealthy neighborhoods, Cliff Drive is a winding, three-mile roadway that overlooks the industrial East Bottoms and downtown KC, plus access to hiking and biking trails in Kessler Park. You’ll feel like you’re in a forest — waterfalls and all — even though you’re minutes from the River Market area.
3
EAST BOTTOMS An often overlooked part of Kansas City, the East Bottoms is steeped in history. The area boomed in the 1800s thanks to the railroad, but local businesses like Knuckleheads Saloon, J. Rieger & Co., Urban Provisions, The Local Pig, and others are bringing more people to this unique part of town.
4
KAW POINT Just over the state line in KCK is Kaw Point, the confluence of the Kansas and Missouri rivers. It’s most famous for serving as the Lewis and Clark Expedition campsite, but today, it offers a great view of downtown KCMO in addition to the Lewis and Clark Heritage Trail and a 10-acre park.
5
THE KANSAS CITY WORKHOUSE According to The Kansas City Star, the Workhouse once served as a prison in the late 19th century. Later, the Workhouse was used for several other purposes, but none really stuck — and the building was abandoned in 1972. Today, it sits in its crumbled state, and is a popular location for urban explorers.
6
CAVE SPRING PARK In the 1940s, looters burned down the cabins at this abandoned campsite. All that remains of that campsite are the stone chimneys … in the middle of the forest. These days, the historic nature park boasts four miles of hiking trails, a campground, water garden, cave, small waterfalls and historic ruins.
7
NELSON ISLAND A wooden bridge located at the northern border of Johnson County on the Mill Creek Streamway Park trail will take you to Nelson Island. It’s named after Cleggie Nelson, who ran a speakeasy on the land during Prohibition, then spent the rest of his life as a hermit. His daughter and grandchildren donated the park land after his death. You’ll glimpse views of factories and Interstate 435 across the river.
