WELCOME FROM THE EDITOR

GOODBYE, SUMMER September brings a heavy dose of reality in our family. Long gone are the lazy days of staying up late and sleeping in. The novelty of back-to-school has worn off; now it’s straight-up homework every night and earlier bedtimes. Sports practices are in full effect and carpool schedules are as complicated as my middle-schooler’s math homework. Like all of you, we are so busy. That’s why these stories that came across my desk for this month’s issue were such a breath of fresh air. Easy, low-maintenance plants to take me through the fall? Yes, please! Quick tips for fighting the flu we’re all inevitably going to get? Bookmarked.

And a profile of Kansas City’s best-known fashion bloggers (including my personal style idol, Melanie Knopke)? My closet will thank you later! If you’re picking up this magazine in a local doctor’s office or salon, I hope you can take a few minutes to take some deep breaths, relax, and READ. Enjoy the quiet. And if this issue doesn’t have something in it that makes you want to roll it up and stick it in your purse for later … We’ll be very surprised. Happy September!

MEET 7 KANSAS CITY FASHION BLOGGERS When you think of fashion, which cities come to mind? New York? Paris? Kansas City? Well, maybe not that last one. The truth is, we have some pretty trendy folks living among us. The blogging world has allowed some of these ladies to expose their stylish ways to a global audience. Meet some of Kansas City’s most fashionable bloggers.

MELANIE KNOPKE | STYLE SCOUT | melanieknopke.com 1. W hat inspired you to start your blog? I started it seven years ago, when my son was first born. I had quit working and needed a creative outlet. I wanted to start a blog that would inspire other moms, and to show them you can have a life and be stylish, even after having kids!

2. W hat makes it unique? There are not many women in their late 30s blogging about fashion. I share outfits that are wearable, age-appropriate, and affordable. I like to show how to get the look for less, and how to pull simple pieces together and make them interesting. Fitness and health are a big part of my life, so I write a lot about those topics, as well as being a mom and our life in Kansas City.

12

| SIMPLYKCMAG.COM

3. W hat’s your favorite thing about Kansas City? I love how KC rallies around local brands and businesses. Since moving here eight years ago, it constantly amazes me how this city continues to grow and evolve. I love trying new restaurants, shopping local boutiques, and discovering new neighborhoods in KC.

4. W hat’s the best advice you’ve ever received? Always be yourself. In the fashion world — and especially blogging — it can be competitive. There is a lot of pressure to look a certain way, represent a certain lifestyle, and always be wearing the best of the best. I try to be myself, and to be true to my personal style. I may not have the largest following, but I have a very loyal following and I love what I do.

5. W hat do you do when you’re not blogging? I wear quite a few hats! I am often shuffling my kids from school and to activities, but when I am not wearing the mom hat, I work as a wardrobe stylist and personal shopper. I have both individual and commercial clients. The bread and butter of my business is closet cleanouts and personal shopping, and for my commercial clients, I style photoshoots and do on-air work with local TV stations. I am also a freelance writer, contributing to local magazines and blogs. When I am not styling or writing, I am helping my husband with our fitness studio, Health House. I help design and manage all of the branded merchandise as well as do the buying for the fitness lines we carry in the studio.

AMY APPLETON-DRYER | STYLE SCOUT | stepsofstyle.com 1. W hat makes your blog unique? I started it in 2012 as a creative outlet. I love the idea of documenting what I wear and where I go throughout the years. It is mostly fashion-based, coupled with travel and lifestyle. Every so often my 2-yearold, Stella, makes an appearance. (She informed me last week that her favorite color to wear is black — a girl after her mother’s heart.)

2. W hat’s your favorite thing about KC? Kansas City has come a long way in the last 10 years, from food to fashion. It has everything you need to have a good time (with the

exception of mountains and a beach) without the stress and traffic of a larger city. But if you do get a hankering for those mountains and beaches, they are within hours from our centrally located city. The people are incredibly down-to-earth and friendly, which makes for fun and light-hearted interactions throughout the day. It’s just a really happy place to live.

will love it.”

4. W hat do you do when you’re not blogging? I love to spend time traveling, cooking, and relaxing with my husband, three teens, and a toddler. (Not so much relaxing but definitely laughing a lot!) I also model part-time in Kansas City and I get to work with some amazing designers, boutiques, and photographers.

3. W hat’s the best advice you’ve ever received? It wasn’t

5. W hat blog post has been your favorite so far? My favorite posts are when I’m traveling. Everything is so new and exciting! And I love nothing more than vacation attire.

CAITLIN FORE | SOPHISTICAITED | sophisticaited.com 1. W hat inspired you to start your blog? I have worked in fashion for over a decade and always find joy in giving women ideas about how to dress to feel their best. I noticed some fashion blogs popping up in 2011 and I loved the inspiration they gave me. I decided I wanted to create this same experience in 2012 with my first blog, “Gussied Up. After learning my way around the blog world, I changed the name and layout to “SophistiCAITed” in October 2014.

2. H ow would you describe it? The blog is focused on showing women how to dress up affordable fashion. I love a good deal and sharing the love. Every-

one benefits from wearing a great outfit, so I shoot looks that give confidence and don’t hurt the wallet.

3. W hat’s your favorite thing about Kansas City? I love how every pocket of Kansas City has its own identity. You can go to the Crossroads and enjoy the shops, arts, and local restaurants or hit up the West Bottoms to find some amazing vintage furniture finds. There is always something fun going on, and everyone here has been so inclusive and welcoming.

4. W hat do you do when you’re not blogging? I help women

selves through my wardrobe styling company C4 Styling. I create wardrobes that make sense for their lives through closet cleanouts, by shopping their closets to create new outfits, personal shopping, and online shopping. My passion is to make my clients love who they are because they love what they wear.

5. W hich blog post are you most proud of? Oh man, this is a tough one! I have to say that within the last six months, it would be the post where I talked about what I wore when I met Kate Spade, and the announcement of our little bundle that is due this October!

AROUND TOWN

EMILY & ELIZABETH KENNEDY | FASHION COLUMN TWINS | fashioncolumntwins.com 1. W hat inspired you to start your blog? We have loved fashion from a very young age so, when we graduated college, we started our blog because we felt that it was difficult to get into the fashion industry while living in the Midwest. Starting a blog about fashion was a great way to get into the industry without having to move away.

2. W hat makes it unique? Our blog is basically a place to find outfit inspiration. We post what we wear, what trends and brands we love, and

sales that are going on. We try to make it relatable and attainable fashion inspiration. I think what makes us unique is the fact that we’re twins and we like to find stylish pieces to wear that are at affordable prices.

3. W hat’s the best advice you’ve ever received? Our dad always told us, “If it were easy, everyone would do it.” The road to success takes a lot of sacrifice and hard work. It’s a piece of advice we have always gone back to, especially now that we are trying to build our brand.

4. W hat do you do when you’re not blogging? We work on our apparel brand, localE. The work never ends!

5. W hich blog post are you most proud of? We partnered with a handbag line called CAB Collection, which was a lot of fun. It was a styled shoot so we were able to get really creative and come up with a theme, add props, etc. We also collaborated with a local photographer and we loved how everything turned out!

JANA MEISTER | JANA STYLE | janastyleblog.com 1. W hat’s your blog all about? “Jana Style” started out as a way to simply share my own personal style, but it has evolved into much more. I share insight on trends, local fashion events, and my favorite brands, boutiques, and retailers. I’ve created my own business of styling and personal shopping services. “Jana Style” is strictly a fashion blog. I try really hard to keep it focused on outfit inspiration, current trends, styling advice, and my insight on real women’s style.

2. W hat’s your favorite thing about Kansas City? So much! I love the arts and culture here, the food, small shops and boutiques, inde-

pendent fashion designers, our sports teams, and the amazing people!

3. W hat’s the best advice you’ve ever received? I have a friend who is very inspirational to me. He’s worked really hard to make his dreams come true, and he has been through so much in his personal and professional life, but he has never given up on his career. He always says, “Don’t quit your daydream,” and I think about that when I’m going through something rough or doubting myself.

4. W hat do you do when you’re not blogging? I love spending time with my family, traveling — and shopping,

of course!

5. W hich blog are you most proud of? I’m proud of my blog in general. It’s been a labor of love from the beginning, and when I get to do what I love because of the work I’ve put into it, it’s very rewarding! The biggest moment for me came recently when one of my blog looks was featured on a billboard in Times Square in New York City! I have been so fortunate to work with several amazing brands including Macy’s, Nike, Trina Turk, and Banana Republic, to name a few. I’ve also met some amazing people — and some of my best friends — through my blog.

ABBY WOOD | ABBY. WOOD. WEAR. | abbywoodwear.com 1. W hat inspired you to start your blog? I wanted to have a space where I could share my passion for style, shopping, and fashion design, but I was nervous to put myself out there. Then, in 2014, I lost one of my best friends unexpectedly. After that, my outlook on life changed. With support from my family, I decided to follow my dream and take the plunge with a new business as a personal stylist. I launched my blog in September 2015 and never looked back.

2. W hat makes it unique? I’m lucky to have my dream job as wardrobe stylist, but I also wanted a space where I could share styling tips and tricks, upcoming trends, and great places to shop to a larger audience. I have degrees in art history and fashion merchandising and extensive experience in retail, so I approach fashion from a different perspective. I also like to share

options for real people with real budgets and to teach people how to learn and develop their own style!

3. W hat’s your favorite thing about Kansas City? I love KC because it has a small-town feel in a larger city. There is a major sense of community and an incredible amount of support for small businesses. I was born and raised in Overland Park. I am out and about the in the city every day, and it is unusual if I don’t run into somebody I know from all parts of my life. I love that. It feels like home. Also, I LOVE the Country Club Plaza. My mom and I spent many days window shopping on the streets of the Plaza and playing dress-up at Saks. My love for fashion and style started with her.

4. W hat’s the best advice you’ve ever received? “Learn from your mistakes, because if you don’t make mistakes, it means you aren’t trying.”

My parents always taught me to believe in myself, even if some of my career decisions weren’t traditional. They always supported my creativity in different careers until I discovered my passion and found my niche.

5. W hich of your blog posts is your favorite? Blogging is a learning process and I think each one is better than the last. However, I am the most proud of my very first one. I had just taken my 6-year-old niece to a Taylor Swift concert. I was totally inspired by her bedazzled jumpsuit and how one person could connect with all ages — from adults to children — through music. I wanted to be able to do the same through my blog. Putting myself out there in the universe and waiting for everyone’s response was terrifying but exhilarating at the same time. It was also a huge turning point for my wardrobe-styling business.

APP OF THE MONTH

TRAFFICKCAM HELPS PREVENT SEX TRAFFICKING The gist: Snap a photo of your hotel room with the TraffickCam app.

Photos are uploaded to a national database of images used by police who are tracking sex trafficking rings. Simply enter your hotel name and room number and up to four pictures. Features such as patterns in the carpeting, furniture, room accessories, and window views are matched against photos of sex-trafficking victims posed in hotel rooms. Early testing showed that the app is 85 percent accurate in identifying the correct hotel in the top 20 matches. Currently, the TraffickCam database contains 1.5 million photos from more than 145,000 in the U.S., taken by early users of the smartphone app — developed in 2015 at Washington University in St. Louis — and from publicly available sources of hotel-room images. TraffickCam doesn’t store any personally identifying information other than your phone’s GPS location. Any images that include people are rejected from the database. TraffickCam is free and available for iOs and Android devices.

HOME & GARDEN HOME

BY BETHANEY WALLACE

Pretty Up Your Garden With Low-Maintenance Plants Whether or not you have a green thumb, it’s hard to argue that easy-to-maintain plants are some of the best options for your garden. Although there might be a great sense of pride from cultivating a rare breed or getting that exotic plant to bloom in our region — the ones that need less work can be equally satisfying. They provide just as much beauty but with half the stress and sweat.

20

| SIMPLYKCMAG.COM

To get the best look for your yard, talk to a gardening pro about your available options. While certain options, such as geraniums, peonies, or variegated ribbon grass (often called “strawberries and cream”) grow well without much TLC, you should also tailor choices based on your own yard:

If you’re not sure where to start (or you just truly hate yard work), native plants are a great way to kick off your landscaping plans. They require about as little work as possible, while still offering plenty of curb appeal. Think of the wildflowers you see growing on the side of the road — no one planted them there, and they’re absolutely beautiful. Choose from all colors and shapes for a combination of heights, scents, and hues that will add value to your home.

• Will the plants get more sun? • Does your yard have low-lying levels that receive an excess amount of moisture? • Do birds or bugs flock to your yard? Take all of these factors into account to save yourself as much yard work as possible.

They’re also incredibly hearty. Native plants have been adapting to local climates for years, which means they can handle virtually anything that Mother Nature throws their way. They’ll require little water (if any), and will remain strong all season long. Better still is that you can tailor these plants to meet your individual tastes — choose flowering breeds, greenery, or even tall grasses (a staple in the Midwest) to round out a variety of textures in your yard.

Another way to save hassle (and cash) is by planting perennials. While annuals live for a single season, perennials come back year after year. They’ll also grow in thicker, fuller, and stronger — as long as you provide necessary pruning. Besides, if you only plant a few per year, you will soon have a yard that’s fully landscaped — all without spending a fortune in a single summer.

Shop our New Arrivals & large selection of SALE items!

Another option is to choose plants that work in your favor. Trees can provide shade and plenty of bird-watching, while smaller versions can provide pleasant scents and keep the bugs at bay. Bay leaves are said to get rid of flies, chives and dill can deter certain beetles and spiders, and fennel whisks away slugs and snails. Perhaps the most important plant of all, however, is lemon balm, which can scare off mosquitos. It’s also fairly low-maintenance and pleasant to look at. Think of it as your own built-in citronella and plant as much lemon balm as you can stand to look at. When opting for a yard that’s visually appealing, there’s nothing proving it also has to be hard work. By asking your favorite garden professional and choosing plants that will do well in your environment, you can land yourself a yard that’s both beautiful and relaxing. Don’t waste your time tending to weeds. Enjoy your perfectly planned outdoor space instead.

7 Ways to Celebrate National Grandparents Day This month, take time to honor the grandparents in your life. Grandparents teach us some of our truest lessons and instill some of our greatest memories. They are the patriarchs and matriarchs of our families; the ones who provide wisdom and deserve respect. This year, National Grandparents Day falls on Sunday, Sept. 11, and it is a great chance to spend quality time with the grandparents. No matter what age the grandkids are — toddlers, teens, or turning 30 — there are fun ways to celebrate Grandparents Day. Here are a few ways your kids can enjoy having a day to honor their grandparents. 1. Make fun quizzes Create a quiz about popular terminology and culture. Make one quiz about when the grandparents grew up, and then create a similar quiz for today’s pop culture. 2. Try a new hobby Let your kids learn from the wisdom of their grandparents by trying out their favorite hobby, such as fishing, gardening, mechanics, or art. 3. Play a favorite board game or card game Entertainment has come a long way since your parents were young. Let them teach your kids some of their favorite board games or card games from their youth. Maybe it will

28

even lead to stories of their childhoods. 4. How has the world changed? Ask your parents to tell your kids how life has changed since they were young. How has technology changed their lives? What did they do for fun when they were little? What do they like the most about what has changed? What do they wish hadn’t changed? 5. Family bingo Create a family game of bingo your parents can play with your kids. Put names of streets, towns, states, or countries their grandparents have lived or visited in the squares, and when the game is over, let them explain each place. 6. How did they meet? Gather your kids to hear their grandparents tell the story of how they met. Ask how they knew they wanted to be together and what their challenges and rewards of their relationship were. 7. L earn some family history This is a perfect time for your kids to learn more about your family history. Tell them to research one of their grandparent’s families. They can interview their grandparent, do research on the internet, and gather info elsewhere to better understand where your family comes from.

How to Naturally Fight Your Cold or Flu Cold and flu season will be upon us shortly, and if you are one of the millions of Americans who become sick with the cold or flu each year, you may be preparing for the inevitable. The common cold can cause an immense amount of discomfort, and influenza, or the “flu,” can cause you to become seriously ill.

32

| SIMPLYKCMAG.COM

Many people become vaccinated each year in an attempt to protect against illnesses such as the flu. But even if you are vaccinated, you still can become sick. Many others choose not to become vaccinated. If you do become sick this cold and flu season, here are some natural home remedies that may help alleviate your symptoms or help your sickness go away.

Fluids and rest As simple as it sounds, “the best home remedy is lots of fluids and rest,” says Janna Willhaus, a pediatric nurse practitioner from Village Pediatrics in Prairie Village. Drink water rather than beverages like alcohol, coffee, or caffeinated sodas, which can make dehydration worse. Drinking warm water with lemon and honey can soothe your throat. Letting your body rest will focus your body’s energy on

healing itself and improve your recovery.

Gargles Willhaus also recommends warm saltwater gargles as a natural way to combat cold and flu symptoms. This can alleviate a sore throat. The Mayo Clinic recommends dissolving a 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon of salt into an 8-ounce glass of warm water and using this to gargle. Some other recommended options for alleviating a sore throat are ice chips, warm tea or soup, or lozenges. It is recommended kids under 4 do not consume lozenges, though, and young children may have a difficult time gargling properly.

Hot shower or humidifier Some of the discomfort experienced from a cold or flu is related to congestion, and a natural way to break up that congestion is taking a hot shower. Hot, steamy showers improve symptoms by adding moisture to the air and loosening congestion. Another option is to use a humidifier or vaporizer. Fever Your body actually has its own method of fighting sickness, which can be very effective. “Fevers actually help the body fight the virus,” Willhaus explains. An elevated body temperature can help certain types of immune cells work better, thus fighting illness and improving recovery. Having a fever may be uncomfortable, but it shows that your immune system is working properly. But your fever can be harmful if it does not dissipate. “If your fever is high or you are achy,” Willhaus says, “acetaminophen or ibuprofen can help temporarily.”

A lifestyle shop in Leawood, Kansas dedicated to responsibly crafted natural and organic products. Here you’ll find luxurious and nourishing items designed to simplify the way you care for yourself while being conscious of the impact you have on the environment.

If you find yourself suffering from a cold or flu this season, some of these home remedies may help you. Your best tool for fighting illness is your body, and these methods can help your body bring you back to good health.

BUCKLE UP, KIDS! A CAR-SEAT SAFETY GUIDE It wasn’t long ago that babies traveled home from the hospital cradled in their mother’s arms in the car. Less than 30 years ago, car seats were not required for children. Today, it’s illegal to travel with a child in the incorrect restraint. As the designs of cars change, so do the car seats. As the child grows, so do the car seats. Change will always bring questions.

Vehicles made after 1998 will have a system, called LATCH, which are metal hooks located in the vehicle seats. The hooks help anchor the car seat to the vehicle in place of using a seatbelt to anchor the car seat. The car seat should never be installed using a seat belt and the LATCH system. There are tons of forward-facing car seats on the market. “The price point only reflects the brand name and the ‘bells and whistles,’” Larimore explains. “The cheapest car seat is just as safe as the most expensive, as long as it’s installed and used correctly.” Children who have outgrown the rear-facing car seat weight limit should move to a forward-facing, five-point harness car seat. This car seat should be used for as long as the manufacturer recommends. The harness straps should be at or above shoulders. The harness straps should also be snug and unable to pinch a fold. Once a child reaches the highest weight or height limit for a forward-facing, five-point harness car seat, they should move to a booster seat. The purpose of a booster seat is to lift the child high enough to fit the vehicle’s seat belt properly. This is usually by the time the child is 4-foot-9 and between the ages of 8 years and 12 years. The lap belt should fit snugly on the upper-hips and thighs, not across the stomach. The shoulder belt should cut across the shoulders and chest and never across the neck.

LAP AND SHOULDER SEATBELTS Approximate age range: 8 years to adult Children must be able to sit upright in the back seat, without slouching, and with their knees bent over the edge of the seat. They must be able to sit this way for the entire ride. When can your kid ride in the front seat? Usually at 12 years old. “Read the vehicle’s manual. Or flip the visor down and read it,” Larimore says. “Every vehicle will tell you weight and height requirements for the passenger seat, including information on the airbag.”

They make sure all the products’ vendors, whom they refer to as artists, are conscious of their environmental impact as well. “We spend a vast amount of time researching companies and mindfully selecting brands and products based on criteria that is unlike a typical store. We look for companies that focus on toxic-free, sustainable, fair-trade, organic, wild-crafted and local ingredients whenever possible,” Moler explains. The toxic 10 — silicone chemicals, formaldehyde-releasing agents, petroleum jelly, and coal tar-derived colors — are commonly found in products such as hair dyes, moisturizers, makeups, perfumes, shampoos, toothpastes, and body washes. The chemicals are bad for skin, because “our skin is the largest organ of the body and works more like a sponge than a barrier, absorbing lotions and potions straight into the bloodstream,” Moler says. And because women use approximately 12 daily personal care products containing up to 168 ingredients, there’s more chances of toxic build up, according to the Environmental Working Group. The perks of steaming up the sheets extend well beyond the bedroom: “Having sex regularly can do more than make you feel closer to your partner — it can actually make you physically healthier,” says Hilda Hutcherson, MD, a clinical professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Columbia University and author of Pleasure: A Woman’s Guide to Getting the Sex You Want, Need, and Deserve.

But beware: Highly active sex can have the opposite effect, leaving you feeling more energized than sleepy.

According to Women’s Health Magazine and WebMD, here are 10 surprising perks women could reap from a regular roll in the hay.

University recently found that half of female migraine sufferers reported headache relief after climaxing. “The endorphins that are released during an orgasm closely resemble morphine, and they effectively relieve pain,” says Cindy M. Meston, PhD, director of

1. Less stress. Sex can boost your self-esteem, happiness, en-

2. Better sleep. The same endorphins that help you de-stress

3. Minimized pain. The Headache Clinic at Southern Illinois

the Sexual Psychophysiology Laboratory at the University of Texas at Austin. Additionally, Barry R. Komisaruk, PhD, a professor at Rutgers, says that while “orgasm can block pain” by releasing a hormone that helps raise your pain threshold, stimulation without orgasm and masturbation can accomplish pain relief, too. “Vaginal stimulation can block chronic back and leg pain, and many women have told us that genital self-stimulation can reduce menstrual cramps and arthritic pain.”

4. Fewer colds. Researchers at Wilkes University in Pennsylvania found that college students who had sex once or twice a week had higher levels of an antibody called immunoblobulin A (IgA), compared to students who had sex less often. Conclusion: Sexually active people take fewer sick days.

5. Boosted libido. “Having sex will make sex better and will improve your libido,” says Lauren Streicher, MD, assistant clinical professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago. For women, having sex increases vaginal lubrication, elasticity, and blood flow, she says, all of which makes it feel better and help you crave more of it.

6. Improved bladder control for women. Good sex is like an aerobic workout for your pelvic floor. When you orgasm, pelvic floor muscles contract, which strengthens them. A strong pelvic floor is important for avoiding incontinence as you age.

7. A shorter, lighter period. Orgasms cause the uterus to contract, and increasing the number of uterine contractions during your menstrual period can help expel blood and tissue more quickly, helping to end your period faster. Additionally, researchers at Yale University School of Medicine found that having sex while menstruating also helps decrease the risk for endometriosis.

8. Lower blood pressure. Joseph J. Pinzone, MD, CEO, and medical director of Santa Monica, Calif.-based Amai Wellness, says there is a good amount of research that suggests a link between sex and lower blood pressure. “One landmark study,” he says, “found that sexual intercourse specifically (not masturbation) lowered systolic blood pressure,” which is the first number on your blood-pressure test.

9. A youthful glow. Regular sex promotes the release of testosterone and estrogen, in addition to other hormones, which can keep the body looking young and promote desirable attributes like soft skin and shiny hair. The Royal Edinburgh Hospital in Scotland conducted an interesting study with this idea in mind: They had a panel of judges view participants through a one-way mirror and guess their ages. The participants who had sex frequently — four times a week, on average — were uniformly perceived to be seven to 12 years younger than their actual ages.

10. A more toned body. Cardiologists consider sexual activity comparable to a modest treadmill workout. It won’t replace your daily routine, but it burns about five calories per minute, which is four more calories per minute than you burn watching TV. Not only will you be giving your heart some cardio, but you’ll also be sculpting muscle. “Your abs and the muscles in your back, butt, and thighs get a good workout as you thrust during sex,” Hutcherson says.

PETS

BY MELANIE KNOPKE

On-Trend Pets While the Labrador Retriever, the German Shepherd and the Golden Retriever steal the top three spots as the most popular dog breeds in America, there are a handful of old and new dog breeds on the rise. We are seeing old breeds like Bulldogs making a comeback, and hybrid dogs like the Pomsky that are gaining popularity with families because of their sweet temperament and adorable looks! Here are a few of the most on-trend pets today: • Great with small children • Gentle and extremely friendly • Easy to train • Playful and needs adequate exercise

Labradoodle Originally designed to be a hypoallergenic guide dog, this breed is becoming wildly popular because of its great social skills, sweet nature, and low-shedding coat.

French Bulldog

• Medium-large in size • Extremely friendly • Easy to groom • High energy and requires a good amount of exercise

The French Bulldog has enjoyed a long history as a companion dog. Created in England to be a miniature Bulldog, this breed accompanied English lacemakers to France, where it acquired its Frenchie name.

Maltipoo Not a dog breed, per se, the Maltipoo is a popular cross of the Maltese and Poodle, known for its fun-loving and affectionate nature. This breed is active, charming, and can adapt to many different living situations. • Small in size • Great for novice pet owners • Adapts well to apartment living • Affectionate • Sheds and requires grooming • Easy to train

Bulldog Bulldogs originally were used to drive cattle to market and to compete in a bloody sport called bull-baiting. Today, they’re gentle companions that love kids! • Medium in size • Has a high potential for weight gain • Calm, courageous, and friendly • Drools a lot! • Has a tendency to bark • Easy to groom • Low energy, but loves to play

Pomsky Pomskies are the result of crossing a Siberian Husky and a Pomeranian. And it is possibly the cutest dog you have ever seen! These dogs are extremely rare and expensive. • Medium in size (20–30 lbs) • Great for families with older kids • Loving, friendly, and playful • Intelligent • Can have dental issues • High-energy and requires exercise

Cavalier King Charles Spaniel An old breed born to be a companion, the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel breed retains the sporty nature of its spaniel ancestors. If not resting on your lap for a belly rub, this dog loves to retrieve toys for sport. • Small in size

• Medium in size • Smart, adaptable • Incredibly kid-friendly and playful • Easy to groom • Requires minimal exercise

Puggle The Puggle has become one of the most common mixed-breed dogs in the country. In a perfect world, every Puggle will have the best traits of its parent breeds, the Beagle and the Pug. • Medium in size • Intelligent • Playful, energetic, and active • Can be difficult to train • Easy care with minimal grooming

GOOD TASTES

BY LESLI LUNDQUIST

Did you know the chocolate chip cookie was discovered in the 1930s by Ruth and Kenneth Wakefield? Ruth and Kenneth owned the Toll House Inn where she would prepare delicious, home-cooked meals to be served to her guests. “One day, while preparing a batch of Butter Drop Do cookies, a favorite recipe dating back to Colonial days, Ruth cut a bar of Nestlé ® Semi-Sweet Chocolate into tiny bits and added them to her dough, expecting them to melt,” according to Nestlé’s website. “Instead, the chocolate held its shape and softened to a delicately creamy texture. And a favorite was born.” I can only imagine Ruth’s reaction to this cake recipe, adapted from the Barefoot Contessa How Easy Is That book. The chocolate chip cookie takes center stage. I definitely think she too would have served this at the Toll House Inn. It is to die for, ladies — trust me.

Mocha Chocolate Icebox Cake Serves 12

Ingredients:

Directions

2 cups cold heavy cream 16 ounces Italian mascarpone cheese 1/2 cup sugar 1/4 cup coffee liqueur, such as Kahlua 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder 1 teaspoon instant espresso powder 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract 1 recipe of baked homemade chocolate chip cookies* Shaved semisweet chocolate, for garnish

In the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the whisk attachment, combine the heavy cream, mascarpone, sugar, coffee liqueur, cocoa powder, espresso powder, and vanilla. Mix on low speed to combine and then slowly raise the speed until it forms firm peaks. To assemble cake, arrange chocolate chip cookies flat in an 8-inch springform pan; cover the bottom as much as possible. (I break some cookies to fill in the spaces.) Spread onefourth of the mocha whipped cream evenly over the cookies. Place another layer of the cookies on top, lying flat and touching, filling in spaces, followed by another fourth of the cream. Continue layering cookies and cream until there are 4 layers of each, ending with a layer of cream. Smooth the top, cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate overnight.

*Nestlé Toll House is our family’s favorite.

Equipment: 8-inch springform pan

Run a small sharp knife around the outside of the cake and remove the sides of the pan. Sprinkle the top with the shaved chocolate, cut in wedges and serve cold. If you want to get a head start, prepare your favorite chocolate chip cookies and freeze them until needed for the cake.

Meet Lesli Lundquist: A passion for cooking? Nope, not really! However, when I was diagnosed with food allergies nearly five years ago, my eyes were opened to all of the wonderful dishes that can be created day to day by simply following a recipe. I have been told that I am a “cook from the pantry” type of food guru. I love to keep my pantry stocked and to cook with the seasons, give my tastes buds a challenge, and of course feed my family delicious, home-cooked meals.

TRENDS

Trend Alert: Crop Flares They say in fashion, everything old becomes new again. The crop flare has made a return! Skinny legs will always be in style — I don’t see them going anywhere. But, if you want to be on-trend, you will be excited about this new silhouette for fall.

46

How to wear the crop flare:

What shoes to wear with a crop:

The most flattering styles:

Make sure to keep your outfit balanced. If you wear something long or flowy with a crop flare it will add unnecessary volume. To accentuate a small waist and curves, go with a fitted top. For blousier tops, make sure to tuck in at the waist.

A classic pump or strappy heel for evening will give you a sophisticated look. For a more casual feel, go with a pointy-toe lace-up flat, mules, or Adidas Stan Smith sneakers. The popular “block heel” for fall looks amazing with cropped flare pants.

You will have to try them all on, because every jean fits differently! Go with very little distressing or fading to create a slimmer look. The only distressing you want is a frayed hem on the bottom. The perfect length will hit right above the ankle.

OF KC’S NEWEST

microbreweries

1

Border Brewing Co. / Kansas City, MO Opened in early 2015, Border Brewing Co. focuses on offering approachable styles of beer for people who are new to the craft-beer world, says owner Eric Martens. He also invites patrons to vote online for the next beer he will brew. (A strawberry blonde ale was the most recent winner.)

2 Calibration Brewery / North Kansas City, MO

The newest addition to Kansas City’s brewery scene, Calibration joins Big Rip Brewing Co. and Cinder Block Brewery in North Kansas City. Former 75th Street brewmaster teamed up with owner Glen Stinson to create seven beers for Calibration’s summer debut. The brewery plans to open its beer garden this fall.

7

Torn Label Brewing Co. / Kansas City, MO

Established in 2014, Crane Brewing specializes in sours and farmhouse ales. The taproom opened last September and features games and Wi-Fi in a chill, friendly atmosphere.

Local firefighter and homebrewer Aaron Ogilvie opened this small-batch brewery, which offers six types of beer, in 2015. Its closest neighbor is Border Brewing Co. in the Crossroads, and you’re welcome to bring over pizza from Grinder’s across the street.

In 2010, Matt Moore and Chance Adams started a business plan to purchase a building in Martin City so they could open a microbrewery. The two first opened a taproom, then added a brewpub across the street. Today, Martin City brews 12 kinds of beer, specializing in Belgian styles.

Stockyards is housed in the old West Bottoms Golden Ox building. The former steakhouse has been transformed into a beautiful modern brewery while still maintaining the cozy feel of the Ox. In addition to its own brews, Stockyards features beers from other KC breweries, custom cocktails, and locally made wine.

A movie producer from Los Angeles and a law student from Chicago make up the backbone of Torn Label. Rafi Chaudry and Travis Moore grew up in Kansas City and eventually came back to Kansas City to open a 15-barrel brewhouse and urban taproom in the Crossroads.
