DON’T JUST TAKE OUR WORD FOR IT NANCY LOST 17 LBS I am feeling more confident about myself and my overall appearance. I travel a lot and one of the biggest things that this program has helped me with is teaching me how to eat and hold myself accountable when on the road for work. I have more energy and overall my health feels like its in balance.

MERLYN LOST 30 LBS I feel better and I look better. I am back to wearing sizes that I had assumed I would never wear again. My knees feel better and do not bother me at all anymore. One of the parts about the program I loved is that the MaxLife program holds you accountable, but you don’t have to check in at their office every day. It makes you accountable to yourself. I am off my blood pressure medications thanks to the MaxLife program. Everyone is extremely pleasant and helpful. They know your name when you walk in and make you feel welcome.

ANGELA LOST 21 LBS I’ve noticed a huge change in my energy level. I quit drinking caffeine at the same time I began my weight loss journey and expected to feel tired all the time, but I ended up having the exact opposite experience. I have a ton of energy and feel motivated to do a lot more physically. Additionally, I do not have all the aches and pains I had prior to beginning the program. The staff has been incredible, and they are all nice as well as supportive.

WHAT, WHERE Meet Duane Joseph Who:

Where:

DUANE JOSEPH OF MARANATHAED LLC Joseph is the president and founder of MaranathaEd LLC, a test prep company he named after his daughter. He has helped countless students in the metro area score high on their ACTs and reach their dreams of attending college. Originally from Seattle, Duane moved to the Midwest in 2007 to work for the Kansas City Public Schools and then the Kauffman Foundation. Duane orchestrated his own Backpack for Teachers drive through his Duane Anthony Joseph Foundation and sits on the board of 100 Black Men of Greater Kansas City. If Duane’s not helping students get into college, you can find him hanging out with his friends. He is a proud father of four children: DeLacey, Duane Jr., Maranatha, and Ayden.

FAVORITE PLACE TO EAT IN KC

There are so many amazing restaurants and places to eat in Kansas City. You can find me at Beer Kitchen grabbing a turkey/turkey sandwich or Gram & Dun for their awesome chicken and waffles or the burnt-ends mac and cheese. For breakfast: Elly’s Brunch & Cafe, First Watch, Happy Gillis, or Eggtc. For my taco fix, I head to Mission Tacos or KC Taco Co. in the Rivermarket. If it’s happy hour with my crew, then Eddie V’s is our spot or Sunday Funday at Brio Tuscan Grille.

FAVORITE PLACE TO DRINK IN KC

Since I’m not a big drinker, I would say that my Shirley Temples are the absolute best at Gram & Dun, Brio, and the new Savoy at 21c. Oh, and don’t forget the three cherries. I’m also a coffee drinker and I have to go with my local Starbucks, being I’m from Seattle. But I also give kudos to KC locals like Thou Mayest, The Roasterie, Messenger Coffee, Crows Coffee, Mildred’s, and Westport Coffeehouse.

FAVORITE SHOPPING IN KC

I’m always looking for deals and some of my favorites places to find them include Express, Cole Haan, Macy’s, Marshalls, and TJ Maxx. Yes, I am a Maxxinista! I have a bow-tie obsession, so you can always find me at Halls or Nordstrom getting my fix.

FAVORITE HIDDEN GEMS IN KC

I live near the Plaza and have several places around there I love to frequent. The Nelson-Atkins Museum and Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art are absolute gems if you’re into art or just want to get out and observe KC. The Crossroads and River Market offers many galleries, locally owned restaurants, and specialty shops. I’m a little hesitant to share my favorite hidden gem but ... The Reserve Restaurant located in the Ambassador Hotel at 11th and Grand is my absolute favorite place in KC. The ambiance is magnificent, the food is delicious, and the jazz on Saturday nights is amazing.

FAVORITE PLACES TO TAKE OUT-OF-TOWN GUESTS

I take all my guests to places that are not chains or that they wouldn’t have in their own cities. Shops like Baldwin, Charlie Hustle, The Bunker, or 7th Heaven. Restaurants like Westside Local, Room 39, Gates BBQ, Café Trio, Lidia’s, Trezo Mare, Gram & Dun, and Joe’s Kansas City.

Shawnee Mission Health Nurse Practitioner Ragan VanLeeuwen, who specializes in gynecologic oncology, works directly with women fighting ovarian cancer. “Much of what is happening to these women is out of their control,” VanLeeuwen says. “I always encourage patients to focus on what they can control that will lead to better treatment outcomes — stay wellhydrated, eat an adequate amount of protein and calories, and exercise.” Sharing information is a critical part of how doctors and nurses care for patients, and it’s normal for those enduring a cancer diagnosis to have questions and want to seek information that will help them better manage the days ahead. “Knowledge really is powerful and I find that sharing what I know with patients and families during this

AROUND TOWN

SMILE, KANSAS CITY September looks good on you, KC. This month is when nature explodes color across KC's landscape. Because autumn is the most popular time of year to take family photos, we chatted with Adrienne Maples, owner of Adrienne Maples Photography (amaples.com), to learn her secret for taking portraits in KC. Put the kids in their best boots, grab a few scarves and a camera. KC has set your beautiful stage to capture a memory or two. A professional photographer will make you look your best but you, too, can take amazing photographs of your family when you follow Maples’ tips.

18

| SIMPLYKCMAG.COM

Words by Julie Burton / Photos by Adrienne Maples

Look for beautiful light. Hold your palm out in front of your face, turn in a circle, and find the light on your hand without shadows or contrast. When you find it, that’s where you’ll want to stand.

Buy a selfie stick. Yes, really. If you want the family in the same shot, a selfie stick will give you a wide angle and include the background too. There are even tripods on the market for selfie sticks. “Some of the best family shots are when you're in tight and making goofy faces,” Maples says. “Selfie sticks are the way to go.”

Watch the clock. Pay attention to that big ball in the sky. Photographers call the hour before sunset “the golden hour.” The sun is at a lower angle in the sky, which casts a pleasing color around faces. Arrive about an hour before sunset to allow enough time to take the perfect shots. Another tip: Cloudy days or right after a rain shower automatically put a soft focus on your pictures.

Bring the littles. You have a short period of time to get your shot with little kids. The trick to photographing children is getting on their level and being prepared to run with them. “This is really what photography's all about — making memories,” Maples explains. “Kids don’t want to sit and smile for hours. It’s OK to move around and explore the world around you while getting a few shots in. Pictures are memories being captured. It’s not just about a beautiful backdrop.”

Wear neutrals. Neutrals look best in the fall. Wear two to three different neutrals and one that pops. Don’t wear warm colors that blend into your background.

Be a local. Wherever you decide to take photos, make a day of it. Eat and shop local. “You can do a photo session, but don’t forget to give back to the local stores,” Maples explains.

Ready? Here are some local spots: Before going anywhere, make sure you read and respect the rules for taking photos, Maples notes. Many popular hotspots in KC have rules about photography. A few places require a permit to bring in a professional photographer, such as Union Station, the Nelson-Atkins Museum, and Loose Park. continued on page 20

Don’t “set up shop” without knowing photography policies. “Really, the best spots are the places that are meaningful to your family. And that could be anywhere in the city,” Maples explains. “Just go where your family has a special connection.”

Grinter Farms Sunflowers

24154 Stillwell Rd., Lawrence, KS Grinter Farms is a working family farm that predominantly grows soybeans, corn, and sunflowers — a lot of sunflowers. Grinter Farms does not charge admission although the family does ask for donations based on an honor system. The family encourages you to visit the neighboring city of Tonganoxie, which is hosting familyfriendly events to coincide with the blooms on Labor Day weekend.

Red Door Barn

16300 Wilkerson Rd., Weston, MO

Opening Labor Day weekend, Red Door Barn is a working farm that has everything you picture during the fall — apple picking, a hayride to the pumpkin patch, farm animals, a country store with a farmers market, and a red-door barn, of course. There isn’t a charge for admission, but you will need to pay for the activities.

KACIE HOW TO DEAL WITH VIDEO GAME-OBSESSED KIDS

My teenager is obsessed with the game fortnight. He's an active kid and is involved in a lot of sports but he plays for hours when he could be doing other things. How do I approach this? He said that all his friends play together.

Since your kid does not seem to be one to sit around all the time, has a well-rounded life and will turn it off when you ask, then I say let him enjoy it with his friends. It’s probably just a phase, and I’m sure a new hit thing will appear soon. Remember fidget spinners? I wouldn’t give it too much worry!

If you have any questions you’d like Kacie to answer, submit them to our managing editor at: ashley@simplykcmag.com.

MIDWEST MYOFASCIAL RELEASE CENTER: AN INVITATION TO FEEL BETTER Words by Ann E. Butenas / Photos by Jami Marshall

Chronic pain tends to be a universal condition. At some point in our lives, we all will deal with pain to some degree or another. Some people may turn to medicinal measures. Others may just live with it, assuming there is no alternative. But why should you live with something that's not natural? If you truly want to feel better and experience a genuine sense of overall health and well-being, perhaps you should look into the integrative services offered at Midwest Myofascial Release Center in Overland Park. Not to be confused with massage therapy, myofascial release is an effective and safe technique that

30

involves applying gentle sustained pressure into the myofascial connective tissue restrictions to eliminate pain and restore motion. Established by Jan Kelly, Midwest Myofascial Release Center has a focus on empowering individuals to heal at their own pace with the goal of returning to a pain-free and active lifestyle. With myofascial release therapy at the foundation of the center’s treatment approach, you also can choose from several modalities to achieve alignment in mind, body, spirit, and emotions. Services include far-infrared sauna sessions, therapeutic massage, NeuroOptimalŽ neurofeed-

back, neuro-linguistic programming, scar tissue release, Reiki healing, and juice cleanses that detox your body and releases any restrictions that may prohibit your body from experiencing a pain-free existence. The center offers comprehensive, individualized programs provided in a safe and nurturing environment. Office Manager Laura Christine initially came to Kelly as a client about seven years ago with certain autoimmune issues. As a result of her work with Kelly and the other practitioners in the clinic, Christine says today, she is about 95% pain-free. Thanks to her great experience, Christine has devel-

oped a passion for helping others and currently focuses on detoxification as a means to healing. “You should strive to do a major detox about about once every quarter,” she says. “Some of the primary benefits of detox include increased energy, clearer thinking, enhanced taste, better skin, improved digestion, and just an overall feeling of wellness.” A juice cleanse essentially kickstarts you into a healthy lifestyle. The center partners with Simple Science Juices, which creates cold-pressed organic juices. “With each bottle, you receive the vitamins and minerals of 2.5 pounds of fresh organic fruits and veggies,” she explains. The juices provide a plantbased energy source that gives your body what it needs. The sauna and juice cleanse provides a “simple detox” — drinking juice and sitting in the sauna is much easier than taking pills or powders, or following a restricted diet. Plus, the infrared light

works at a cellular level, aiding in pain relief, improved circulation, lowered blood pressure, and reduced inflammation. “It really works,” Christine shares, smiling. “You just feel better.”

“Some of the benefits of detox include increased energy, clearer thinking, better skin, improved digestion, and just an overall feeling of wellness.” And, clients completely agree. “I love using the infrared sauna in combination with another treatment, especially before a myofascial release session,” says Debbie S. “I emerge feeling cleansed,

clear, and with rosy cheeks.” A pressure-free environment, the experts at Midwest Myofascial Release Center give clients the opportunity to determine their individual needs. “It is all up to the client and how that person feels,” Christine says. “You can come in for one or a few services or you can establish an on-going relationship with the practice.” If pain, injury, or illness has left a debilitating effect on you, then consider the specialties at Midwest Myofascial Release Center. Your body is a wise instrument, and sometimes you have to really tune into it to understand what it is telling you. Contact Christine at 913.548.8546 or 913.706.2204, or visit midwestmyofascialrelease.com to learn more. The Midwest Myofascial Release Center is located at 7270 W. 98th Terrace, Suite 220, in Overland Park.

The "Simple Detox” cleanses your body of toxins by sitting in an infrared sauna and completing a juice fast. The juices are provided by Simple Science Juices.

BEAUTY

ON POINT: IS COSMETIC ACUPUNCTURE ‘THE NEW BOTOX’?

Words by Deborah Eakin Osborne

mental doctrinal source for Chinese medicine for more than two millennia. Bear Don’t Walk points out that while most traditional Chinese medicine schools have a Mei Rong or Chinese medical cosmetology department, the terms cosmetic, facial revitalization (as it is known as in Europe), and facial rejuvenation acupuncture (as it is sometimes called in the United States) are relatively new, having mostly emerged in the past 20 to 30 years. She attributes the flourishing of this technique and method to the economic growth in China in the 1990s, which boosted the cultural desire for beauty. “People want to be beautiful,” Bear Don’t Walk concedes. “It’s part of our nature.” She adds that many people who wouldn’t normally consider acupuncture will seek out cosmetic acupuncture. And with the cultural trend toward a more organic, sustainable, holistic approach to life and beauty, she says the popularity of cosmetic acupuncture is definitely growing.

”Cross my heart and hope to die, stick a needle in my ... eyelid?” Well, not exactly. But close. Perhaps you, like me, are at least somewhat familiar with acupuncture as a therapy. But I have to admit, the idea of acupuncture being used as an antiaging treatment was completely new to me. So what is cosmetic acupuncture, and how does it stack up to Botox? Licensed acupuncturist and integrative health practitioner Julie Bear Don’t Walk, owner and director of Julie Bear Don’t Walk Acupuncture + Integrative Health Clinic in Lawrence, Kansas, explains that cosmetic acupuncture includes whole-body acupuncture because it’s a system that treats your entire self. This allows your inner beauty to shine forth from the deepest levels of health. Cosmetic acupuncture has been around as long as wholebody acupuncture, she says. Cosmetic approaches were referenced in the Huang Di Nei Jing, an ancient Chinese medical text recognized as the funda-

How it works

Botox is a brand name of an injectable neurotoxin produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. Other brand names include Dysport and Xeomin. Used cosmetically to reduce the appearance of facial fine lines and wrinkles, Botox temporarily paralyzes the underlying muscles, causing the wrinkles to relax and soften. The effects may last three to four months. But, as the paralysis wears off, the lines and wrinkles gradually reappear, requiring follow-up treatments in order to maintain the desired outcome. Temporary bruising is the most common side effect of Botox. Headaches, which are rare, also can occur and usually last no more than 24 to 48 hours. Bear Don’t Walk says many of her patients are previous Botox-users. Some say they were dissatisfied with its superficial nature. For example, Botox can soften fine lines and wrinkles but doesn’t really “lift” your face or enhance your beauty from within. She finds that most of her clients now prefer a longer term, more sustainable model of beauty and health.

Extremely tiny, hair-thin needles are gently placed into specific areas of your body, head, and face, causing local changes that increase blood flow and stimulate collagen production. This combination increases elasticity, muscle tone, and vitality, which nourishes and repairs your skin, resulting in a dewy glow and more youthful appearance.

“They want something more natural,” she explains, “that addresses and enhances the root of beauty: great health, aging gracefully, and radiating that inner glow.” For Bear Don’t Walk, the greatest difference between cosmetic acupuncture and Botox is that “Botox works locally, for a period of time, while cosmetic acupuncture works systemically, for the long term.”

The average course of treatment consists of either two treatments per week for six weeks or one treatment per week for 12 weeks. While everyone responds differently, you might notice subtle changes after just the first treatment. You will see longer-lasting results after the fifth or sixth treatment. Deep wrinkles begin diminishing after six to eight treatments. After 12 treatments, you’ll see an improvement in your skin tone, skin texture, overall complexion, and muscle toning and tightness. Periodic follow-up treatments are encouraged to maintain results.

In short, cosmetic acupuncture is a natural investment in your health and wellbeing as well as your beauty. Other than occasional bruising, which Bear Don’t Walk says is rare, the risks are minimal and there are no negative side effects while the long-term effects — better sleep, more energy, less depression and anxiety, more confidence, and a sense of inner peace that comes from a body and life in balance — are cumulative and positive. The choice is yours. Choose well.

Recent studies show people right here in Johnson County face hunger every day. Although government-funded programs are in place to help feed our communities (like SNAP, formerly called food stamps), talk to anyone close to the issue and they’ll tell you the money doesn’t go far enough.

Local caterer Gina Reardon has been fundraising for No Kid Hungry since 2014.

LOCAL BAKER IS PASSIONATE ABOUT ENDING CHILD HUNGER We all know the nagging pain of hunger — some of us may even know the feeling of starvation. How hard it is to concentrate. The lightheadedness and weakness of the body. The difficulty falling asleep. The lack of sleep that exacerbates our unease and distractedness. But how many of us truly have been hungry, day in and day out?

34

| SIMPLYKCMAG.COM

A concern for those suffering from hunger, especially kids, inspired local caterer Gina Reardon to start doing something about it. In 2014, when scrolling through Facebook, she saw a post by a friend in L.A. who was holding a bake sale to raise funds to support Share Our Strength’s No Kid Hungry campaign. She researched the cause and knew she wanted to get involved. “Their website is full of statistics about our country’s food insecurities that impact children, and it’s staggering,” Reardon says. Some of those statistics? • 1 3 million children face food insecurity in the U.S., or one in six. • F or the first time in history, over half of public school students are from low-income families. • T hree out of four public school teachers say that students regularly come to school hungry, with 81% saying it happens every week.

Culinary philanthropist and No Kid Hungry KC chapter founder Gina Reardon takes a break from a baking session with her grandsons and neighborhood kids.

Studies show that kids who are hungry have a harder time learning than their peers, are sick more often, and struggle to keep up in class. When Reardon learned that the average bake sale for No Kid Hungry raised $1,000, she knew she could reach that goal. In her first year, she raised $7,000, but she wanted to do more. To date, Reardon’s Kansas City team has raised over $230,000 for No Kid Hungry and has been recognized as the No. 1 bake sale and independent fundraising team in the country. It was the top spot not only for individual organizers but also for corporate teams. Part of the fundraising success came through her idea to add a second event to the bake sale: The Country Brunch. Nancy Smith, wife of Chef Michael Smith and general manager of Michael Smith Restaurant, came on as co-chair in 2016, followed in 2017 by Jenny Vergara, contributing editor for Feast Magazine Midwest, food critic and founder of The Test Kitchen. Some of the hottest chefs in KC have participated in the brunch, and local bartenders have battled it out to create the best bloody Mary.

“The bake sale is like a community fair with a variety of delicious sweet and savory treats, where there is something for everyone,” Reardon says. “It’s warm and friendly. The positive vibe is contagious. We even serve our own Roasterie signature blend coffee.” The bake sale rose to celebrity status, too — even Mayor Sly James participated, along with some of the best bakers and culinary pros in the area. And of the 60 culinary professional and community bakers, a handful were kids themselves, part of the “Next Generation” division of bakers. This year, thanks to a partnership with the American Society of Baking, the Bake Sale for No Kid Hungry will be held in two locations simultaneously: Brookside and Prairiefire in Overland Park. Besides the bake sale this month and brunch in October, anyone can get involved anytime by holding their own bake sale. Connect with Reardon at kcteam4nokidhungry.com to learn more.

FROM FIVE SPICE TO FRUIT SOUP

JESSICA ARMSTRONG OF NOVEL

Pastry chef Jessica Armstrong met Ryan Brazeal during the first year that his restaurant Novel was open. They’ve collaborated and grown together, both as a family and as a restaurant, having recently relocated to a larger, more casual space on the edge of the Crossroads Arts District in KCMO. We sat down there this summer to talk about all the little things that keep life interesting.

What’s your guilty-pleasure food? Ice cream. Cake and ice cream. Cherry chocolate chip is probably my favorite.

What do you think sets your restaurant apart from others? This is a hard question. Ryan worked for David Chang in New York, so that’s where a lot of the Asian influences come from, but it’s mostly in the sauces. My menu is more playful. It’s definitely New American, but I do use some Asian flavors. For instance, there’s five spice in the carrot cake.

How do you spend your free time? I like being outside. I have a 2-yearold and I’m 20 weeks pregnant, so my daughter and I play outside a lot. It’s important for kids. Summer’s my favorite season. It’s really got the most exciting produce. I’m mostly excited about the dessert menu right now. I have chamomile cheesecake with grilled peaches, and grasshopper ice cream cake with fresh chocolate mint ice cream. I use local chocolate mint and I steep it overnight into the cream and milk.

Growing up, what was your favorite dish and who cooked it? My grandma cooked a lot. She was from Norway, so I baked a lot with her. We’d make pumpkin pie and Norwegian cookies. She made this thing called fruit soup. It was tapioca with preserved fruits and cream and it was really good. Every once in a while I’ll make it, sometimes for the holidays. In your opinion, what is an indispensable tool in the kitchen? For pastry, definitely a strainer. It’s important for things to be smooth and the textures to be right in desserts. Is there an ingredient you could never live without? Vanilla beans. Madagascar vanilla beans.

36

| SIMPLYKCMAG.COM

Do you have a go-to cocktail? I used to drink gin martinis, that was a big go-to. Or mezcal Negroni. Caitlin, when she worked at Port Fonda, would make me the best mezcal Negroni.

What’s your favorite thing about KC? The creative community. Just how diverse it is. It’s a very positive community. Everyone seems to help each other. I have a lot of friends who are jazz musicians so I see live music a lot. I used to, back when I wasn’t a mom, go to The Phoenix, The Green Lady Lounge, The Blue Room, Ça Va. I’m really good friends with Caitlin Corcoran [co-owner of Ça Va], and she has bands play every week there. My friend, Ebony, sings at Affäre for Sunday brunch.

PARENTING

Words by Stacey Hatton

SHOPPING FOR A NEW BABYSITTER? The first time leaving your infant with a babysitter, how well did you fare? Comfort levels tend to wax and wane depending on how many referrals you have, age and experience of the sitter, or whether a sitter has taken a babysitting course. However, there are many factors allowing you to have a pleasant evening away from the kiddos, as opposed to checking your phone every 30 minutes or your mind playing out various scenarios ... like your children tying up the sitter and destroying the custommade drapes with your new zigzag scissors.

FINDING A SITTER Given that you will want to find someone mature, oozing with common

sense yet confident and someone who truly loves kids, word-of-mouth is usually a good place to start. Get recommendations from friends, coworkers, neighbors, or staff at your child’s pediatrician’s office or school. Here are some categories of sitters you may consider.

MOTHER’S HELPER For the reason that “tweens” aren’t developmentally ready for watching children solely by themselves, this job is a perfect warm-up opportunity for them. You can mold your helper into a babysitter who will be perfect for you future needs. A parent should be present in the home while the helper assists with responsibilities of caring for the children and household duties. Pay rates nationally start anywhere from minimum wage ($7.25/hour in Kansas and $7.85/hour in Missouri), closer to a regular babysitter rate. But

many parents in the metro pay far less than this since you will be present while the helper is assisting. Rates vary based on the responsibilities, experience, number of children to be cared for, and region of the country.

TRADITIONAL BABYSITTER Finding a babysitter who thoroughly enjoys playing with kids and not just texting friends important. Look for someone who has taken a babysitting course as this is usually an indicator he or she is serious about the job. The Jewish Community Center of Greater Kansas City hosts Safe Sitter Courses for kids aged 11 to 14. Aspiring babysitters will learn safety skills, such as what to do when faced with dangers such as power failures or weather emergencies; child-care skills and the ages and stages of child development; first-aid and rescue

skills, such as choking rescue and how to deal with injuries and illnesses; and life and business skills. The American Red Cross also offers online babysitting basics and advanced child care training.

TEAM OF BABYSITTERS When my children were infants (14 months apart) bedtime was horrific. We could hardly do it as parents, so how could we get a teenager to do it? So instead of being locked in our home for years, we came up with a plan to hire teen friends from our church. They worked in the nursery (so we knew they were good with kids), they were best friends, and loved spending time together. They were going to hang out together anyway over the weekend and now they had someone to pay them to do it!

Many sitters these days have taken a babysitting course, so they are prepared to answer your questions. It's important for you to find out if they have any training in first aid, choking rescue, or have been certified in child or infant CPR. Consider hiring a potential sitter for a practice run — especially if you have a long event coming up or something out of town — to ensure you are comfortable with the sitter. Make sure to also ask your children for their thoughts afterward. Lastly, put emergency information and household rules in an easy location for quick reference if needed.

MUST-KNOW EMERGENCY INFO • First and last name of kids and parents • Phone number and address of home (calling 911, your sitter needs to give these out) • Children’s birthdates • Health insurance company name • Your cell phone numbers AND the number of the place you will be • Neighbors’ phone numbers • Poison Control (800.222.1222)

HOME

4 PRO TIPS FOR A CLEAN HOUSE We all have that friend or relative whose house always seems to be immaculate, without even a touch of dust or clutter. Maybe she has more free time or more energy, we might think. Maybe she just really likes to clean. The fact is, there are simple things you can do to make your space — home, office, etc. — easier to clean and keep that way, says Helen Austen, a counselor-turned-professional organizer who now operates her own business (organizedbyhelen.com).

40

| SIMPLYKCMAG.COM

Words by Rebecca Fischer

Like any skill, being organized may not come as naturally to you. Or, maybe you are a skillful organizer, but age or an illness has made it challenging to keep your space tidy. Either way, Austen’s four tips will help you stay focused. 1. D evelop a system and stick to it. Most tasks take way less time to complete than we think, Austen says, especially if we’re tired or feeling stressed. Her rule is that if it takes less than a couple of minutes to do something, do it now. 2. G ive everything a “home,” which usually means somewhere put away. Austen recommends things like drawer organizers and a label maker to help you get started. “If you don’t put everything in its place right away, take a few minutes at the end of the day to tidy up and do so,” she says. “You’ll always know where your bag is and where your keys are, and your space will look better.”

We all have limited amounts of willpower, and creative types can tend to get hung up on weighing the pros and cons of even simple decisions, which can zap willpower, Austen says. Having a place for everything seems super simple, but it goes a long way in limiting the number of decisions. 3. S et a timer, especially when facing larger tasks. If you’re cleaning a room or (eek!) the entire basement, giving yourself a set amount of time in which to work will help you stay on task. “We want to see the light at the end of the tunnel, and if we have 20 boxes in the basement, there’s just seemingly no end in sight,” Austen explains. “Allotting a certain amount of time for the task is all about staying motivated.”

4. N ot everybody can do it alone. Asking a friend or relative to help can backfire if that person becomes critical or insists things be done his or her way. This is where it can be helpful to call on a professional organizer. “I want to know what my clients’ true goals are,” Austen says. “Usually, it’s not ‘I want a clean kitchen,’ but rather, ‘I want to have people over more, and my kitchen is a disaster.’” Although she’s no longer a counselor, Austen has realized she is still helping people in a tangible way as a professional organizer. “I’ve found that when my clients get their physical stuff in order, they feel empowered to tackle other goals.”

Add the flour one cup at a time, followed by the pistachios and cranberries after the first cup or two of flour. Gradually add the remaining flour and mix until combined and the mixture has formed a stiff dough. Divide the dough in half and shape the first half of the dough into a cylinder on parchment or waxed paper, rolling the dough with the palms of your hands to form a roll about 2 inches wide. Roll up in parchment, place on the baking sheet, repeat with the second half of the dough, and chill for a few hours. Preheat your oven to 325 degrees. When you’re ready to bake the cookies, whisk an egg white with 1 teaspoon of water until slightly frothy. Using a pastry brush, evenly brush each roll of dough with the egg white mixture and roll in the coarse sugar. Slice the cookies into rounds about 3/8-inch to 1/2-inch thick. Place the dough on a parchment-lined baking sheet and bake them for 12 to 15 minutes until the cookies are set and firm to the touch, but not brown.

APP OF THE MONTH

GET YOUR MEDICAL RECORDS WHENEVER YOU NEED THEM The gist: Having your medical records close at hand is imperative,

but the GenieMD app is more than just that. While it easily tracks and securely stores your health profile, you can customize the app to help manage your medications and alert you to identify adverse drug interactions. You can track vitals such as blood pressure, cholesterol, or glucose level with the option of producing custom reports that enable you and your doctor to make more informed decisions. As a bonus, the app tracks exercise routines and aids in contacting 911 and family or friends through the push of one button. You also can quickly and easily identify common health concerns by checking symptoms for any gender or age group. Answer the question guides to receive advice and guidance to next steps. This app is available for free for Android and iOS.

tips FOR BETTER SLEEP

1 S tick to a schedule. Yes, even on the weekends. This

helps to regulate your body’s clock, making it easier for you to fall and stay asleep.

2 R econdsider your bedroom. Your room should

free from any noise and light that can disturb your sleep. It also should be cool, between 60 and 67 degrees.

3 P ractice a relaxing bedtime ritual. Having a

relaxing routine, away from bright lights, helps separate your sleep time from your daily activities, which can cause excitement, stress, or anxiety that might make it more difficult to fall asleep or remain asleep.

4 E xercise daily. Vigorous exercise is best, but even

light exercise is better than no activity at all. Work out any time of the day, but not at the expense of your sleep.

5 Avoid naps if you have trouble sleeping. Some studies reveal that power naps may help you get through the day. But, if you find you can’t fall asleep at bedtime, don’t take one.

6 S leep comfortably. It goes without saying, but we’re saying it anyway: Make sure your mattress is comfortable and supportive. Is it time to replace it? Most mattresses last between seven and 10 years.

7 Find the perfect pillow. Pillows aren’t one-size-

fits-all. It really depends on your sleep position. If you don’t want to splurge on an expensive pillow, side sleepers can try putting a pillow between your knees and thighs. Back sleepers might want a pillow under your knees to support your spine. And stomach sleepers will want a cushion that’s about three inches thick to ensure your spine stays aligned.
