HELPING YOU GET YOUR FINANCIAL HOUSE IN ORDER

Serving all of Maryland and the District of Columbia Chapter 13)

“I have attended a few seminars on Estate Planning, and I was aware that I needed to start this process sooner than later. I was fortunate to attend an Estate Planning seminar presented by Suren Adams. I was very impressed with her professionalism, her impeccable knowledge of the subject matter, and the ability to present the information in an understandable language. Suren’s noteworthy credentials speak for themselves, and her service costs are comparable to others in the area. I would highly recommend her service to anyone who is interested in the Estate Planning process. I guarantee that once you attend Suren’s seminar, you will not delay in starting the process today!”

“Mrs. Adams: We want to thank you very much for the diligent work your office has done in finalizing our Trust package, to include notifications to our investment organizations and trustees. The Stretch LOFT A New Black-Owned Healing Therapy on the Rise

The Stretch Loft is a health and wellness center that provides holistic treatment for a wide variety of setbacks and strives to improve its patients’ overall well-being through the art of stretching. Practitioners of The Stretch Loft aim to address stored trauma, stress, and anxiety in the body and release and heal it in order to create positive changes for their patients not only physically, but mentally and emotionally as well.

Ben Atanga, the owner of The Stretch Loft, began his practice in 2020 in Prince George’s County, Maryland to begin his healing work in a predominately Black community. Atanga has had his own life changed by stretch therapy, and this is what ignited his passion and gave him the idea to begin helping change the lives of others with this process.

After an injury to his foot that began to affect the rest of his body and overall health, Atanga tried many traditional routes of healing but continued to suffer from the effects of his injury. A stretching trainer noticed that he was suffering from a long-term injury by the way that Atanga was walking, stretched him, and essentially changed his life for the better. From that point on, Atanga became certified in stretching mobility and began to learn about the vast benefits of stretch therapy. “When I started to apply the techniques I was learning on my clients, they were having the exact same results,” Atanga said, “They felt like I was giving them their life back, like they were healing.”

One of the many reasons stretch therapy is so successful is because it addresses the body and mind as a whole, instead of focusing on one specific area. The Stretch Loft provides full body services because “the site of the pain may not be the source”. Mental trauma stores itself in your body, giving it the potential to cause the same negative effects as physical trauma. In speaking on the importance of addressing and healing these setbacks and trauma, Atanaga

said, “All that [trauma] is stored memory and all that restricts you from being able to live free. It impacts the way we think, impacts the way we process things mentally and emotionally, impacts the way we rest, and it actually impacts our internal health.”

When the Covid-19 pandemic began, many people were negatively impacted by the trials and tribulations of living through a global pandemic. Atanga began mobile stretch therapy services in order to help people at this point in time, before eventually creating The Stretch Loft. A year later, The Stretch Loft Academy was created to train, mentor, and educate practitioners on the art of stretch therapy, online and in person. “I want to provide a gateway for people who are in wellness to take part in this,” Atanga said, in speaking on the importance of the academy.

Every practitioner in The Stretch Loft has been trained by The Stretch Loft Academy, which is providing a way to expand stretch therapy throughout the country. The Stretch Loft in Prince George’s County has also incorporated massage therapy into their practices, as well as mobile services up to 25 miles from the studio. Soon, there will be multiple new Stretch Loft locations throughout the United States.

In the last two and a half years, The Stretch Loft has had over 5,000 patients and certified around 100 practitioners from different parts of the country who are now able to practice stretch therapy in their own communities. “What makes this all happen is the team that I have around me,” Atanga said, “I started this journey alone and along the way, I’ve attracted different people from different walks of life.” As the staff of The Stretch Loft continues to grow and more and more people begin to find out about the benefits of stretch therapy, Atanga hopes that this practice will continue to spread to give more people relief in their daily lives. “Our goal is to spread this work and have everyone experience it,” he said.

As a newcomer to The Stretch Loft, a consultation and an assessment, as well as an explanation about the benefits of stretch therapy will be provided. This helps new members to identify where they are storing tension and gives stretch therapy practitioners an idea of where to start for their personalized stretch therapy.

The member retention that The Stretch Loft maintains as well as the large influx of new members and practitioners speaks for itself. “The most rewarding thing is giving people hope.” Atanga said, “When people experience themselves newly again after getting that stretch, I think that’s the most rewarding thing.”

For more information on The Stretch Loft, visit their website at thestretchloft.com. The Stretch Loft Academy website will be up and running within the next couple of weeks as well for anyone interested in beginning their journey practicing stretch therapy. “This is something that you need the rest of your life,” Atanga said, “This is the secret sauce, this is the magic pill.”

A Local’s Guide to Living in Bowie, Maryland

Originating as a small railroad stop, Bowie today is a large municipality — the biggest in all of Prince George’s County. It is also the fifth-largest municipality in terms of population and the third largest in terms of area in all of Maryland. Nonetheless, Bowie has managed to maintain a suburban feel, which has helped it become one of the top places to live in the state.

ABOUT BOWIE, MARYLAND

Before the railway was built, the land that is now Bowie was mostly small farms and large tobacco plantations. In 1870, a settlement called Huntington City grew up around the newly-constructed railroad junction. This place was chosen for the settlement because it was located on the main line from Baltimore and Potomac to Southern Maryland and on the branch line to Washington D.C. In 1880, Huntington City became Bowie. At this time, it consisted of more than 500 residential buildings. Planners had created these properties to form a large town site. The town grew further when a trolley line came to the area bringing hourly trains.

All this helped Bowie develop into a city. Today, it has a population of just over 58,000. Bowie is also home to a Class AA Eastern League baseball team called the Bowie Baysox, which is affiliated with the Baltimore Orioles. The team has been in Bowie since 1993.

LIVING IN BOWIE, MD

The majority of residents in Bowie live in a planned community that dates back to the 1960s. Most have their own mode of transport and many commute to Washington D.C. or Annapolis — Bowie has direct connections to both cities. There is also easy access to Baltimore.

12 | July 2023

There are three Amtrak stations a short distance from Bowie. The nearest is New Carrollton, 7 miles away. The other two are in Washington and at BWI Airport.

There are also several middle schools and a couple high schools. These are Benjamin Tasker Middle School, Samuel Ogle Middle, Bowie High, and Tall Oaks Vocational (for grades 10 through 12).

Finally, Bowie has a university: Bowie State University. Originally a teacher-training college for African Americans, it now offers a number of undergraduate and graduate degrees.

THINGS TO DO IN BOWIE, MD

There’s plenty to do in Bowie and the surrounding area, whatever your age and your interests. For instance, there’s a golf course, a performing arts center, and a senior citizens center.

Six Flags America is just outside of Bowie and is the large amusement park in Maryland. It features many thrilling roller coasters for kids and adults of all ages, a full feature waterpark with many slides and pools, Looney Tunes–themed rides for kids, games, activities, and much more. This is a must-do summer activity for many Maryland families. The park can get crowded during the summer months so plan on getting there early if you want shorter lines on the roller coasters.

If you are into golfing, there are several golf courses to choose from just a short drive from Bowie. Including the Country Club At Woodmore, Enterprise Golf Course, and the Walden Country Club.

A highlight of Bowie, though, has to be Belair Estate — a Georgian plantation house consisting of five parts. The mansion is on the National Register of Historic Places. It also features Belair Stables, which used to belong to Belair Stud, a top racing stables in the state.

In fact, Belair Estate is just one of many historic places in Bowie. There are several other homes along with some churches, a few plantations, and Governor’s Bridge, which crosses the Patuxent River.

There are also a couple museums in Bowie. One is the Huntington Railroad Museum, which is located in the restored railroad buildings of the original railway station. The other is the National Capital Radio & Television Museum. In addition to the displays of radio and television technology from throughout the ages, it’s a great place to learn about the history of electronic media.

Essential Design Tips for a Fabulous Closet

Stepping into your closet and seeing all of your clothing and accessories at once—from your shirts to your shoes—can help you stay organized and even grow your personal style. No matter your closet size, you can design the space to maximize storage and feel like a movie star. And by following a few closet design tips, you can transform your space into a dream closet that’s as luxurious as it is functional.

19 | July 2023

1. Utilize Every Inch

Closets often contain wasted space at the top, bottom, or corners. Measure your closet layout dimensions, then draft a design that accounts for every nook and cranny.

Double Hang Your Rods

Put up two rods, one above the other, to add more hanging space. Consider including short and fulllength hanging spaces to divide up items from shirts to long dresses.

Add High Shelves

Build in upper shelves at the very top of your closet to store items you don’t use every day, such as handbags and purses.

Include Low Shelves or Drawers

Place angled shelves underneath your hung clothes for shoes or put in drawers for items like socks and scarves.

Add an Island if You Have Space

Include drawers in your island design for extra storage space. The countertop can be a spot for folding clothes or displaying jewelry.

Build Corner Shelves

Once you design the rest of your functional elements, see if you have room for corner shelves for items like handbags and bins of socks.

Create a Spot for Your Hamper

Whether it’s a tilt-out hamper with a removable bin to carry to the laundry room or a cozy spot on the floor, be sure you make room for a laundry basket.

2. Customize Your Closet Components

Even if you choose a pre-designed DIY closet system, you can create a custom closet design based on what you need most. Think about the items you have in your closet before designing your setup. Do you have several pairs of tall boots? Make sure you have shelves to accommodate the height. Do you own a lot of handbags or just a couple? Are you a jewelry fanatic, or have a few favorites you rotate?

Take inventory of your closet items and decide what each group needs. The best closet designs have enough storage space for what you currently have with a little room for growth.

3. Plan Your Lighting

Ample closet lighting not only boosts the vibe of your space but allows you to find items more easily and see how they look in the mirror. Recessed can lights or battery-operated LED lighting brightens a closet without taking up headspace. Aim for a color temperature of 3000K to 3500K. Any brighter is too harsh for closet space, and any softer won’t allow you to see your items adequately.

If you have high ceilings, consider an extra light fixture to add style, such as a chandelier. Consider putting in under-cabinet lighting to illuminate your clothing, shoes, and accessories.

20 | July 2023

4. Put Everything on Display

Seeing all of your clothing with ease allows you to make selections that best fit your day. Instead of installing solid cabinet doors, consider no doors or clear display cabinets. Put your shoes, boots, and sandals on visible, angled shelves.

If you want to organize items in baskets, such as scarves or wristlets, consider clear bins. Hang your jewelry or ties up if you have the room. The exception? You may wish to hide items such as bins of socks, baseball caps, or gloves that are harder to keep looking tidy.

5. Add Inserts and Organizers

While shelves and rods are important, the finer points of organization keep your system working day after day. Aim to give every item a home and let your favorite accessories stand on their own. Here are some storage and display ideas to complete your setup:

• Drawer dividers and trays for socks, underwear, and other small items

• Organizer bins for drawers or shelves

• Dividers for bins with smaller items

• Hat stands or wall hooks

• Shaper inserts for purses and boots

• Jewelry or tie stands and organizers, or shallow drawers with divider trays

• Belt and tie racks

6. Pick a Place to Sit

Whether you’re slipping on your socks or sipping coffee, add a spot to perch if there’s space.

Consider a built-in bench, a comfy stool, or a vanity chair for putting on makeup. Having a place to rest makes your closet feel extra luxurious, and you can even choose one with additional storage built-in.

7. Include a Mirror

From a three-way full-body mirror to create a personal dressing room to a small wall mirror for a quick check before you leave, there are a million ways to add this touch. Choose a mirror that fits your needs, depending on your square footage and whether you have a vanity in your closet. You might want to opt for a mirror that slides in and out, saving you room.

8. Choose Coordinating Hangers

Thin, matching hangers save a ton of space on your racks, and you should opt for a style that supports your clothing. If you have sports jackets, you’ll want a hanger that can carry the weight. If you have blouses, look for a velvet style that’ll prevent them from sliding off. With a backdrop of matching hangers, you can easily spot and sort your clothing.

9. Incorporate Your Personal Style

Throw down a rug, include an indoor or faux plant, paint your closet walls a fun color, or hang a piece of art. Since your closet is tucked away, you can be bolder in your style. No matter what, choose decor pieces that make you feel glamorous and refreshed.

WELCOME TO Maryland BED & BREAKFAST

Atrip to Maryland is filled with one Instagram-worthy moment after another whether you visit its sparkling Atlantic shores, its forested mountains, or somewhere in between. You can choose from thrilling adventures, quiet moments in nature, bustling cities, charming towns, rich history, and mouthwatering cuisine. (The steamed crabs seasoned with Old Bay alone are enough to make you plan a return visit.) But how do you narrow down which regions to visit and things to do? If you’re looking for the perfect romantic getaway, look no further than Maryland’s Eastern Shore. This picturesque region is home to Bed and Breakfasts, Inns, and small hotels, all nestled among charming small towns and scenic vistas. The Eastern Shore is also the best place to enjoy the Chesapeake Bayand its many activities like kayaking. Whether you’re looking to relax on the beach or take a sailing lesson, you’ll find everything you need for the perfect vacation in Maryland. And of course, no trip to the Eastern Shore would be complete without a visit to Assateague Island to see the wild ponies. Begin with our suggestions below and make plans to stay at one of the best bed and breakfasts in Maryland. Our Maryland bed and breakfasts will add comfort, convenience, and luxury to your Mid-Atlantic adventure!

THINGS TO SEE & DO IN MARYLAND

As you begin planning your trip to the Old Line State, you’ll realize that so many notable cities and towns are on the water. A few of our favorites include the resort town of Ocean City. It has miles of beaches and plenty of shops and restaurants on its wooden boardwalk. There’s even an oldfashioned amusement park, the Jolly Roger! Don’t miss Annapolis, the capital city and home of the U.S. Naval Academy, or Baltimore, a port city on the Chesapeake Bay that dates back to the 1700s. Further inland, you’ll find quaint Victorian towns with access to some of the best hunting, fishing, and hiking. And Western Maryland offers mountainous areas perfect for thrilling wintertime adventures.

WHERE TO EAT AND DRINK IN MARYLAND

During your culinary adventure to Maryland, be sure to experience the five Cs: crabs, coddies, caramels, cakes, and cold Natty Boh. OK, so we pushed the limit with the last C, but you’ll see why. Of course, fresh-caught crabs straight from the Chesapeake Bay and neighboring waters are a must. Sit down to a feast steamed to perfection with Old Bay seafood seasoning (made in Baltimore). If you’re not proficient at cracking crabs, you may opt for lump crab cakes or cream of crab soup. You’ll also want to try coddies, fish cakes made with potato and salted cod and served with saltines and mustard. Wash it all down with a can of National Bohemian, Maryland’s very own Pilsner. Craving something sweet? Try caramel creams from the Baltimore Chewing Gum Co., or a slice of the sinful eight-layer chocolate fudge cake from Smith Island. Yum.

BEST TIME TO VISIT MARYLAND

The time of year you visit depends on the experience you’d like to have. May through September are perfect for days at the beach or lake sunning, fishing, or boating. Come in May to attend the Preakness near Baltimore, or in June or July to see the wild ponies on Assateague Island. September through November is the prime leaf-peeping season, and wintertime brings substantial snowfall. Western Maryland offers the best opportunities for downhill and cross-country skiing.

Inside, you’ll find 3,127 square feet with a stunning vaulted great room, an office, split bedrooms, and tons of built-in extras from the pantry, to the mudroom, to the laundry room. The master suite with its five-piece spa bath and huge walkin closet is privately located in a hallway behind the kitchen and in front of the side-entry garage. Three other bedrooms—two in a Jack-and-Jill setup and one private suite—are down another hallway on the opposite side of the house. There’s also a large bonus room over the garage if you need more. Finally, take a look at the rear porch. Complete with an outdoor island kitchen and a fireplace, it greatly expands the functional space of the home!
