Protect your skin from the sun. A lot of folks have heard that Black people don’t need sunscreen but that is simply false. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher to protect your skin from harmful UV rays. This is especially important for those who are prone to hyperpigmentation, as too much sun exposure can make matters worse.

Cleanse your skin twice a day: Use a gentle cleanser to remove dirt and oil from your skin, but be careful not to strip your skin of its natural oils. The summer heat can make your skin oilier than normal, so once a day won’t cut it.

Say no to ashiness and moisturize! Melanin-rich skin tends to get visibly drier skin than other skin types, so it’s important to use a moisturizer that is rich and hydrating. Look for products that contain ingredients like shea butter, cocoa butter, or jojoba oil.

Maintain a peace practice. Prayer, meditation, or dancing with loved ones all count! Living in such stressful times can affect your skin and overall appearance so do your best to focus on the positive. You can start with deep breaths and affirmations in moments of high stress.

Gently exfoliate regularly: Exfoliation helps to remove dead skin cells and reveal brighter, smoother skin. Use a gentle exfoliator once or twice a week to avoid irritating your skin. Consult a skin professional to know what exfoliator works best for your skin type.

Use products that contain antioxidants: Antioxidants like vitamin C and E can help to protect your skin from damage caused by free radicals. Look for products that contain these ingredients to keep your skin looking youthful. Shea butter is an example of a product that is packed with antioxidants.

Avoid harsh chemicals: Avoid using products that contain harsh chemicals like sulfates, alcohol, and synthetic fragrances. These can irritate your skin and cause dryness and inflammation.

Be gentle with your skin: Treat your skin gently and avoid harsh scrubbing or rubbing. Use a soft cloth or your fingers to cleanse your skin, and pat your skin dry instead of rubbing it with a towel.

Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of water to keep your skin hydrated from the inside out. This will help to prevent dryness and keep your skin looking healthy and radiant.
