MILKHA RUNS
THE STORY OF MILKHA
SINGH
Written by M. Young-Scholten & M. Wilkinson Illustrated by Mugisa Aliguma
Milkha runs to school.
The school is ten kilometres away.
The sand is hot. Run, Milkha run. Milka jumps between patches of grass.
Men come to Milka’s village.
People attack Milka’s family.
“Run, Milkha run,” his father says.
Milkha runs into the forest.
Milkha lives alone.
He has no shoes. He has no food. He steals food.
The police chase him. Run, Milkha, run.
Milkha goes into the army. He runs. He runs on a track. He trains. He wins races. He runs for India. Run, Milkha run.
Before the race, Milkha does not sleep. He prays. He puts his forehead on the ground.
He will do his best. Run, Milha run. He wins the gold medal.
