A PERSONALIZED EDUCATION At Simpson, you will be taught by a professor, not a graduate assistant. Most of our professors hold the highest degrees in their field. They’re acclaimed scholars who could teach virtually anywhere, but choose to be here for our intimate setting, our distinctive approach to learning and our commitment to service. Our smaller class sizes mean that you will get the personal attention you deserve. You won’t be an anonymous face in a large lecture hall. Simpson professors invest the time to get to know you as a person—your hopes, your dreams. Someday, your professors may be writing recommendations on your behalf to employers and graduate schools. Wouldn’t you want them to know you? At Simpson, they will.

THE RELATIONSHIPS YOU BUILD IN COLLEGE WILL CHANGE YOUR LIFE. MOLLY MONK WILL TELL YOU THAT THE CONNECTIONS WITH PROFESSORS ARE SOME OF THE MOST IMPORTANT. “Without the professors at Simpson, I don’t know where I would be,” says Molly, who is from Rochester, Minn. “Because they believed in me, they wouldn’t let me give up.” The Culver Fellow is a Political Science and International Relations double major that has served as an intern with the Iowa Democratic Senate Research Staff. Molly also completed an internship with the Iowa Institute for Community Alliances. Her work there included compiling homeless data, creating a community resources directory and working with the Mayors Challenge to End Veteran Homelessness. “My Simpson Experience has been so much better than I ever could have imagined,” Molly says. “I never thought I’d be able to call professors with Ph.D.’s some of my closest friends.”

EMERGE

M ATH M O DELING

EMERGE@Simpson is an innovative program that allows students to gain real world experiences in a business incubator environment. Through this integrated learning, students can either bring their own idea or join a venture and essentially build a business from the ground up. EMERGE is a place for selfstarters, creative thinkers and people who are driven to get things done. It is an opportunity to put into action what you are learning in your classes and to build a strong resumé with real world experiences.

For 11 consecutive years Simpson has fielded more teams than any institution in the United States for the Mathematical & Interdisciplinary Competition in Modeling. In recent years, several Simpson teams have received Meritorious Awards, which recognizes the top 10-15 percent of participants.

I O WA HI STORY CEN TER The Iowa History Center preserves and promotes the state’s history in a variety of ways. For example, the center made it possible for a 25-foot statue depicting the couple from Grant Wood’s most famous painting, “American Gothic,” to be on display at Simpson College. The sculpture, created by Seward Johnson, stayed on campus for several months and became a popular stop for visitors to campus.

SP EEC H & DEBATE T E A M In the 2014-15 academic year, Simpson’s Speech and Debate Team collected 142 trophies and a top-five finish in the Pi Kappa Delta National Tournament. Simpson offers a comprehensive program that includes opportunities to choose from 18 different speech events and five different debate events.

MATT

CHRISTEN MATT CHRISTEN DIDN’T WAIT UNTIL GRADUATION TO LAUNCH HIS CAREER. HE STARTED HIS FRESHMAN YEAR. Thanks to the encouragement of a Simpson math professor, Matt was confident that taking actuary exams as a freshman was the best way to jump start his career. That led to an internship at Athene, a company in West Des Moines. It’s a great example of how Simpson’s proximity to the Des Moines area produces success for students.

“Since I am pursuing a career as an actuary, it is very beneficial to be close to Des Moines, where there is a high demand for actuaries,” says Matt, who is from Walford, Iowa. Many companies, including Principal Financial Group, Nationwide and Transamerica send representatives to the Simpson campus to visit with students. Ask Matt what most surprised him about Simpson, and he responds: “Networking opportunities.” “I ultimately chose to come to Simpson because I felt confident that I would have a job in my career field by the time I graduated,” he says.

M CLAIN

ONE OF JACOB MCLAIN’S FIRST CLASSES AT SIMPSON COLLEGE TURNED OUT TO BE ONE THAT WOULD SHAPE NOT ONLY HIS ACADEMIC PATH, BUT ALSO HIS PERSPECTIVE OF THE GLOBAL COMMUNITY. “During my first semester, I took a World Religions course,” he said. “I really enjoyed the class because I had not previously been exposed to religious diversity. It was all so new to me.” He decided to pursue a religion major, with a focus on the Islamic state. However, he knew he needed to get closer to the situation in order to begin addressing these challenging issues. That’s exactly what Jacob did. In the summer of 2015, he spent three months in Tel Aviv, Israel completing a research internship that looked at what it is about the Islamic state that is so appealing to young men and women. “The experience was so valuable,” he said. “Better understanding the problem is critical to finding a solution, and I’m committed to that now more than ever.”

BUILDING ON OUR TRADITIONS We’re always looking to improve your Simpson Experience. Recent projects include the $14 million Kent Campus Center, a popular destination for students. While there, you can visit, study or select from several food and snack options, including Au Bon Pain café bakery, Red Mango, Tyler’s Grille and Millie’s, a coffee shop featuring Starbucks products. Theatre majors and theatergoers alike praise the recent renovation of the Blank Performing Arts Center, which added 17,000 square feet and space for specialized classrooms. We also provide our students and athletes with a first-class facility to achieve their athletic and fitness potential. The Steven Johnson Fitness Center opened in January 2014 and provides students with an excellent,

comprehensive space to workout. The two-tier facility features a 5,500-square-foot strength and conditioning center and a 4,500-square-foot exercise and fitness center. There is also additional classroom and meeting space for the athletic training and exercise science departments. While we celebrate our new and improved facilities, we also cherish our traditions—events such as Yell Like Hell, Campus Day and the All College Sing are an important part of the Simpson Experience. Whether you’re walking to class with other students, cheering on the Storm or enjoying a music recital in a plush auditorium, you can feel the Simpson spirit everywhere on campus.

YOUR LIFE ON CAMPUS WILL BE MEMORABLE.

SIMPSON ATHLETES ARE SUCCESSFUL IN THEIR SPORT AND IN THE CLASSROOM When Nick Joslyn was considering colleges, he knew that Simpson’s math department had an excellent reputation and that the men’s soccer program had lofty goals. His older brother, Louis, told him. The Joslyn brothers are from Baldwin City, Kansas, and have made a huge impact on the Simpson campus.

Both were on the same team in the international math modeling competition. They received an honorable mention award for their paper on modeling the sustainability of a country. The Joslyn brothers have something else in common: Both are thrilled they chose Simpson.

“A huge number of Simpson students are part of an athletic team or organization,” Abbie says. “Professors understand that and work well with students if they have to miss class for an athletic activity.” Abbie, who transferred to Simpson, says smaller schools care about athletic success, but also recognize the importance of academics. “If you are looking for a place that genuinely cares about your education and success, then Simpson is that place. Professors care about every student and go out of their way to help you. “It’s a perfect fit for me and I am so glad that I made the decision to transfer here.”

COURTNEY CASTON WAS A HIGH SCHOOL SENIOR IN ATLANTA, GEORGIA, WHEN SHE MET BERNARD MCDONALD, AN ASSISTANT PROFESSOR OF MUSIC AND LARSEN CHAIR OF OPERA AT SIMPSON. Courtney had never heard of Simpson and had never been to Iowa, but McDonald described the College’s internationally respected opera program and persuaded her to visit campus. “I really liked it,” she says. Now a junior, Courtney describes her first two years at Simpson as busy. The soprano had roles in both opera performances and joined the Women’s Chorale. “I don’t think I would be performing as much as I do here anywhere else,” she says. “I’m getting personal, one-on-one attention and I’m learning a lot, because I have personal relationships with the professors and the directors.”
