AN INTRODUCTIONAND ORIENTATION
by Michael Ching (Composer and Librettist)
based on a concept by
Dean Anthony
SPEED DATING TONIGHT! is what I call a "new numbers opera." Much of traditional opera is based on musical numbers: arias, duets, ensembles, finales. SpDT! is similarly structured but with some twists. First connecting material such as recitative is minimized. As for the songs and ensembles themselves, most of the material is not gendered and not limited to one vocal type. Even the order of the pieces is up to the producer. The cast needn't be based on a 50/50 gender balance. (It doesn't need to be binary either.) In the over 130 productions the smallest cast has been four and the largest around fifty. The goal is to have one hundred options, with the idea being that you use only the material you want for your cast. Currently there are 95 options I count a true duet as two options, for example, but a piece with only a couple of response lines, counts as one option.
The opera starts and ends with a frame and premise that isn't varied. At a local pub, the bartender (B), server (M), Dating Coordinator (S or M), and busboy (mute or any voice) get ready for the event and greet the daters as they enter. We are introduced to two nervous characters ("I could just die") and Dater #22 (B). He's got a singing birthday card. The actual speed dating starts and the show ends when everyone has had their song, duet, or trio. There are a few subplots to hold the show together. The finale starts with the server commenting in a Brechtian manner about the event ("Daters are a lot like singers"). Dater #22, a failure so far, gives it one more try, and in a parody of the Pappageno/Pappagena duet, finally finds his true love, a fellow cell phone addict. The daters exit and the bartender and server decide to go have a coffee. Alone, the busboy, dances with their broom.
So, the traditional show requires:
Quinn, Bartender, baritone
Stephanie, Server, mezzo
Kaylee, the Dating Coordinator, soprano or mezzo
Busboy, mute or any voice type (can be cut entirely)
Your group of daters, number completely variable (4-40)
Since the first production commissioned, produced, and directed by Dean Anthony at the Janiec Opera of the Brevard Music Center, SpDT! has been done over a hundred times. The episodic, inclusive structure of the opera proved very useful during the COVID-19 pandemic of 2020-2021. Brevard commissioned a ZOOM SPEED DATING TONIGHT! which is essentially the same show, but one that concentrates on the daters, de-emphasizing the bar milieu.

Michael Ching, Composer and Librettist
An opera composer/librettist, conductor, and songwriter, Michael Ching is the composer/librettist of the opera SPEED DATING TONIGHT! With nearly one hundred forty productions since its 2013 premiere at the Janiec Opera of the Brevard Music Center, SPEED DATING TONIGHT! is one of the most popular operas of the 21st century. Michael is Composer-in-Residence at Savannah Voice Festival and Taos Opera Institute, and Opera consultant at EC Schirmer. He is the former Artistic Director of Opera Memphis. He is serving his second term on the board of the National Opera Institute. Michael studied composition with Robert Ward at Duke University and Carlisle Floyd at the Houston Opera Studio. With a lifelong devotion to the craft of operatic composition learned through the success and failure of over a dozen operas, through composition study, and through years of conducting the standard operatic repertoire; and with a strong interest in folk and country music, Michael is a somewhat of an outlier in the world of new music. In 2025, his new opera HAZEL MINER will premiere at Northern State University.

The GuestArtists Program is a key component to the success of Simpson Productions. Guest artists help bring a new perspective to the work and create opportunities for students to engage with a broader network of designers, actors and directors. This production of Speed Dating Tonight! has provided us the opportunity to bring guest stage manager Bridget Anderson to Simpson College. Bridget is a graduate of Syracuse University's BFA Stage Management program. She spent several years holding stage management positions in the Greater Boston area and has been the Assistant Production Manager for Des Moines Metro Opera since 2021
Meet the Simpson Productions Student Company
Students involved in Simpson Productions come from a variety of disciplines across campus. Many of the students working on productions are theatre majors and minors. However, we also have criminal justice, history, communications, music and other majors working on the shows. We have some students who may not be in a production, but they do have a workstudy position in the department. The theatre department employs over 20 students in lighting, costumes, sound and the scene shop. Simpson Productions couldn't produce our shows without all of these students.

Working: A Musical
From the book by Studs Terkel
Adapted by Stephen Schwartz and Nina Faso
Localized format conceived by Daniel C. Levine for ACT of CT*
Barnum Studio Theatre February 14-16, 2025
Based on Studs Terkel's best-selling book of interviews with American workers, Working paints a vivid portrait of the workers that the world so often takes for granted: the teacher, the waitress, the millworker, the mason, and the housewife, just to name a few. Nominated for six Tony Awards, this classic has been updated for a modern age, featuring songs by Lin-Manuel Miranda, Stephen Schwartz, Craig Carnelia, James Taylor, Micki Grant, and more.
Behind every job, there is a person with a story to tell.
Medea
By Euripides
Pote Theatre March 28-30, 2025
Lies, betrayal, and revenge culminate in this Greek tragedy as a passionate exploration of the depth of Medea’s pain.
Aesop’s Fables
Adapted by James Brock
Barnum Studio Theatre April 25-26, 2025
Four of Aesop’s best loved fables... ‘The Fox and the Crow,’ ‘The Hare and the Tortoise,’ ‘The Donkey In the Lion’s Skin,’ and finally, ‘The Fox and the Sour Grapes,’ are delightfully created in this interesting approach to storyteller’s theatre. All the scene changes and costume adaptations are done in full view of the audience. As the actors become the Rabbit, the Turtle, the Fox, the Crow, or the Donkey in the Lion’s skin, the audience is brought into the action of the play by seeing the change from actor to character and back to actor again.
