SIMPSON’S STUDENT GOVERNMENT ASSOCIATION IS A GREAT PLACE FOR STUDENTS TO GET INVOLVED IN SERVICE AND LEADERSHIP.

SIMPSON INTRAMURALS GIVE STUDENTS A CHANCE TO BE COMPETITIVE IN A FUN ENVIRONMENT. INTRAMURALS

Student Government Association (SGA) is a centralized, representative body for student government on campus. The association oversees the budgets for organizations and events while acting as a liaison between the college and its students. The Executive Branch is comprised of the president and vice president, as voted on by the student body, as well as appointed positions of student body manager and treasurer. Each class also votes on four senators and a class president. Weekly meetings are open to all students, faculty and staff.

The Simpson College intramural program offers more than 60 activities to give students an outlet for fun, exercise and relaxation. THE INTRAMURAL CUP competition enhances the intramural program while fostering a spirit of cooperation and competition among housing units. Teams compete in a variety of intramural events and points accumulate for designated activities from September through March. The overall winners in both the men’s and women’s leagues are the winners of the annual Intramural Cup. The winning teams have their housing units’ names engraved on a plaque displayed on campus. All participating members receive Intramural Cup prizes at the end of the year. There are also opportunities for students to participate as officials, scorekeepers and supervisors.

Campus Outreach, Internal Affairs, Finance and the Judicial Board are just a few of the sub-committees SGA members may become involved in or lead. Prexy Club is a leadership organization directed by the Simpson College President and the Student Body President.

CAMPUS DAY

OFF-CAMPUS RECREATION

SGA also organizes Campus Day, one of Simpson’s oldest traditions and most beloved service projects. Campus Day began in 1889 as a day when classes were canceled so students could clean up campus, plant flowers and rake leaves. Eventually this tradition turned its focus from cleaning campus to more of a community outreach day, providing the same services to the residents of Indianola. SGA organizes students, faculty and staff each Campus Day into service teams.

If you are interested in venturing out, there are many things to do in the area, including destinations such as Lake Ahquabi, a new YMCA facility, Summerset bike trail, Iowa Cubs at Principal Park (Triple-A baseball), Adventureland Amusement Park, Sleepy Hollow Sports Park and the Iowa Events Center.

RELIGIOUS LIFE COMMUNITY

SERVICE CAREER DEVELOPMENT AND CIVIC ENGAGEMENT

A WIDE VARIETY OF SPIRITUAL PROGRAMS AND EVENTS ARE OPEN TO SIMPSON STUDENTS THROUGH THE RELIGIOUS LIFE COMMUNITY (RLC). Christian (Protestant, Catholic and non-denominational) and Interfaith programs provide numerous opportunities for worship, service, discipleship, outreach and fellowship. Studentled campus worship is a popular event for those students looking for a contemporary, casual, non-denominational worship opportunity each week. One popular option for students looking for volunteer opportunities are the fall and spring break service trips hosted by RLC. Each year, RLC sends students across the country to serve communities in need. In recent years, students have traveled to Canada, Georgia, Louisiana, Texas, New York, New Hampshire and several other destinations on the East Coast.

Community service and academic service-learning are at the heart of Simpson’s Career Development and Civic Engagement program. Students can explore career choices as they reflect on who they are called to be in order to live a life filled with meaning and purpose.

“THE RLC COMMUNITY PROVIDES A SPACE FOR ALL PEOPLE TO STRENGTHEN THEIR FAITH, EXPLORE DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVES, AND EXPERIENCE MEANINGFUL CONNECTIONS AT SIMPSON.” - K A I T LY N LO U K

Career Development and Civic Engagement helps students integrate their liberal arts education with their vocational identity and the demands of the workplace. In partnership with the local community, faculty, staff and alumni, the center encourages vocational exploration by broadening students’ vision of the world and its needs. Through reflection and mentorship, students discover how they can serve the common good through specific career options and in consideration of life’s big choices. At Simpson we call this vocation, defined by American author and theologian Frederick Buechner as, “WHERE YOUR DEEP GLADNESS AND THE WORLD’S DEEP HUNGER MEET.” Among the services provided are vocational exploration through volunteer service (including fall and spring break service trips), civic engagement, service-learning, career counseling, internships, job expos and fairs (job, graduate school and volunteer). We provide ongoing alumni networking and support, as well as an extensive resources library for students, alumni, faculty and staff.

SIMPSON HAS BEEN NAMED TO THE PRESIDENT’S HIGHER EDUCATION COMMUNITY SERVICE HONOR ROLL EVERY YEAR SINCE THE AWARD’S INCEPTION. EACH YEAR, SIMPSON STUDENTS, FACULTY, AND STAFF CONTRIBUTE OVER 35,000 HOURS OF SERVICE TO THE COMMUNITY.
