The summer invites to eat healthier. At least that's what the numbers reflect, as during the month of July the household consumption in Spain of fresh produce increased by 11 percent, a total of 432.6 million kilos. With a decline in value of 12.3 percent, reaching 487.8 million euros. The increases in the consumption has been of stone fruit, such as the peach with 47.6 million kilos (2 percent), apricot with 8.2 million kilos (13) or plum with 17.2 ( 27). Also notable are increases with watermelon 95.3 (17) and melon with 74.4 (34). With regard to vegetables and potatoes, the volume also increased by 4.2 percent amounting to 329.6 million kilos and the value decreased by 9.6 to 388.7 million euros. Tomato increased from 65.6 million kilos in July 2008 to 70.3 in the same month of 2009. In the period, August 2008 to July 2009, the consumption of fruit and vegetables increased in volume but decreased in value, reaching 4.3 million tonnes and 5.814 million euros, according to the Spanish Federation of Associations of Producers and Exporters Fruit, vegetables, flowers and live plants (FEPEX).

Few green skin available but in small sizes.
Small quantities of marisol are now available although nothing significant. Varieties such as Clemenrubi is now in the market but small sizes. The rain will benefit the sizes of the fruit in a not too far future but there is right now a delay in picking so few kgs in the nearest days will be available. Weather right is very good and that abrupt change from 10 degrees and heavy rain to 25 degrees and sun is not healthy for the fruit.
Broccoli: SLowly starting week 41 – 42 and towards week 44 where there ought to be larger quantities. Probably important to beat in mind that with the latest extreme weather there has not been plantet any broccoli and with the 90 day growing cyclus there should be an important lack of broccoli and incberg towards Christmas.

Winter season has begun. 14x2 flow
Cheap Spanish capsicum but the quality is not good. The wall are thin on the pepper at this point and more delicate so they tend to wrinkle after certain time. Padron and Chilli available
Courgettes: Good quality with film. Cucumber: The good green colour is beginning to show. Bad weather has influenced and right now there not as many cucumbers as 1 week ago and northern Europe is having less own production so prices should be expected to increase.
Cauliflower: Egg plants: starting week 45 Celeri: starting mid November until April/ May excellent Spanish celery
Prices are going down, but actually not too many Spanish available. Figs: Slowly starting week 42-43. Grapes: Due to the weather the quality is poor.

The third week of October we can probably expect the first navelinas in the markets. However a harvest oup to 40% lesser than last year is expected, and particulary in Andalucia. Valencia has a more regular crop.
Kaki: We advised that some growers had picked from fields where the fruit were starting to fall of the trees and that it would create quality problems. This turned out to be true and many either green or very soft kaki has been marketed. Now the rain stopped so fields can be treated so within a week we expect to start with guaranteed healthy kaki fruit. Valencia has been very affected so few large sizes and probably high prices. Lemon: Only few is offering new crop of primofiori and with the latest rain there is very few available. Prices are relatively high compared to Turkish but there are some preferences for primofiori and hence a demand right now higher than the available offered quantities. Prices in the field are right now 34 % higher than last year
Plums: Still Angeleno of good quality from Southern Spain. Season length will depend of demand, but as we see it now there will be Spanish plums until November. Pomegranade: New crop of Mollar at reasonable prices. Quality is excellent. Rapsberries: In the Valle del Jerte there are Glen Lyon, Heritage and Rubi available until mid October. In what regards the production in Huelva they will start to pick the varieties Sugana and Hindotop and if the current weather continues large quantities is to be expected in 2 weeks.
Satsumas: Heavy rain has delayed the harvest and next week only few kgs will be available. What is being loaded now was picked before rain started, and bearing in mind that satsumas are even more sensible to weather than clementines then next week should be very complicated. Tomatoes: There are still very few quantities of cherry and trimix but a little more of plum cherry. Still 2 weeks to go before the quantities are normal.
