HALF-A-BLOCK URBAN PROJECT
Looking at the site it is partitioned into two, the lower built part - filled with multi-functional spaces and social gathering areas created by the people is considered to be one of the best functioning courtyards in Prague and the upper undevelopped part. Situted inside the upper end of the site, the “half-a-block proposal consists on defining spaces and interspatial relationships within the area and act as a transition block from the unbuilt environment to the built one. The project relies on not as much as creating blocks but more as defining them and the surrounding spaces created by them. The area is mostly residential, has high property value and great acces to public transport, moreover there is an upcoming masterplan to densify the middle of the district, nevertheless, the area - and in general the lower Holesovice - lacks public gathering places and social spaces. These come together in the best form as parcs which have proven themselves to be enjoyed and sought by the people. The concept of this project is to create a space where new communities can emerge and gather, an Agora. To accomplish this, two new massings are created in order to enclose and define the empty space in the center. The new massings are built in the optimal way to ensure light, to protect from wind, to allow acces to transportation, to have vision over the agora with minimal restriction possible of the existing massings and to create attractiveness.

SITE SECTION INTERSPATIAL RELATIONS The ground floor of the new massing works as a whole within itself and partially with the old massing. An agora and two blocks are created, a small one and a large one. The small block consists of two residential buildings and a coworking space with an horizontal common working area and a vertical office area - which acts as a continious part of the existing building with a dead facade - and a courtyard used for parking. It has a simple structure, however the large block is a bit more diverse in its functions. It is made of six structures, half of them are residential, but the other half are distributed on each street and grants direct acces to the inside of the block. Inside the area is enclosed to form two multipurpose rooms that have the proper requierments to be used as room for exhibition, an auditorium for public speeches and lectures, an amphitheatre for theatre and movies, a concert hall for musical performances exhibitions. In the agora an old car parking container building is renovated and recommissioned to become a bistro and a new tower is built that will operate under the same ownership as the bistro.

Bistro
1:250 SOCIAL SPACE: THE AGORA The agora inhibits a bistro and a tower but also a modular pole system and a sloped ground on its enterance. Metal poles of 5 different predetermined sizes are used to create a multifunctional interactive effect. Apart from being a guide for the agora leading inwards the large block, it can be used for presenting hung artworks and partition spaces for outdoor exhibitons, forming a closed area with a tent on top, hanging a screen for projection from the bistro for movie nights, or just simple things like using it to hang swings... Imagination is the limit. The sloped ground is an interactive ground that can be used as a playground for children and adults but also for walking, cycling and skating, its purpose is to create interaction with other people which emphasises the agora concept.

MASTERPLAN DETAIL: CHIMNEY

1:250
CHIMNEY ? TOWER ? VIEW POINT ? The purpose of this structure is to create a ruling object for the agora - as in ancient Greece - that has a harmonious shape with the site. Analising the surroundings, the area showed itself to have a massive range and quantity of old industrial brick chimneys. The chimney’s narrow, circular, vertical/conoidical structure makes a perfect contrast to the cubical low rise buildings from the old and new massings of the site. To cleanse it from its usual association to industrialism and pollution, the ground floor is fully glazed and transparent which gives a cozy hut effect. The chimney has an elevator shaft in the center with a continiuous flight of wide stairs that takes you to the top which has a panaromic view point - being just taller than the surrounding buildings in the area. It has a view over the river, roofscapes and especially other chimneys which will pop-out over the roofs at that level. A Coffee Shop was integrated on the bottom floor so that people can take their beverages to the vantage point to admire the view or sit on the wide stairs to read their books with different natural light effects - depending on the time of the day - generating from tall narrow window. People will always have a view over the Agora.

A four story school with the shape of a rectangle cut diagonally from one corner to adapt to the circulation space of the site and invite the public. It is 57m long, 14m wide and 18m high above the ground. The building stands on a structural grid. All of the structural components are on the outside creating free space on the inside, two paths of steel columns are running along the west and east façades, four beams tie each respective column to each other and all of the floors lie on the beams with the post and beam technique. This building’s facade is made of triple glazed glass and corrugated metal sheets and it has an accessible roof. From the roof you can look over the atrium located in the middle of the building, covered with glass. The construction of this school is expensive but effective and sustainable over a long period of time. 20
