ABOUT THE SBPA

About SBPA

History The concept of a book publishers association was first mooted at a workshop on “Book Publishing and Distribution” held in Singapore in 1966. It was not until 19 July 1968 that the Singapore Book Publishers Association was formally incorporated with 22 member companies, 14 of which were of Singapore origin. Practically all of the original members were engaged in the publishing, importation and distribution of textbooks. The changing composition of today’s membership reflects the industry’s broadening scope as content developers across media.

ABOUT THE SBPA

Aims & Objectives 01

To encourage fair trade practices and maintain high standards of professionalism and service in the publishing industry.

02

To cooperate with other associations representing similar or allied businesses, and with organisations of educational or cultural nature in Singapore and other countries of the world to further the reading of books.

03

To encourage the widest possible distribution of books in Singapore in particular, and throughout the world in general.

04

To promote and protect, by all lawful means, the interests of the publishers of Singapore.

05

To protect members by dealing collectively with problems which can best be so dealt with.

06

To examine all legislative proposals likely to affect publishers and the book trade, and to take such measures in support thereof, in opposition thereto or to secure amendments thereto as may be expedient.

07

To extend the activities and usefulness of the association as may seem desirable.

08

To encourage the improvement of the technical and educational qualifications of members of the association and their staff and to initiate or encourage research into the resolution of all problems technical or otherwise affecting the production and distribution of books.

09

To form groups of members with specialised interests, and to promote and protect, within the framework of the association, the special interests of such members.

10

To encourage local publishing and allied trades in Singapore.

11

To encourage local authors, and to take necessary measures to strengthen the copyright laws in Singapore and stop piracy of books.

12

To help to foster national consciousness through publishing.

13

To invest in movable and immovable property or properties, or acquire rights or privileges for and on behalf of the association.

ABOUT THE SBPA

Main Activities The members of the association are engaged in the following areas of business:

01

Publishing and distribution of educational books, general and scholarly works, audiovisual materials and electronic publications.

02

Exploring the development of e-content for new media on new platforms.

03

Importation and distribution of books.

04

Co-publishing, translations and joint venture arrangements with international publishers for regional and export markets.

05

Sales and purchase of rights for both Singapore and foreign-published books.

Singapore’s strategic geographical position and the efficiency of its work-force together with modern banking and transportation facilities have made the Republic an ideal centre for investment in publishing and printing. New technologies and facilities have enabled Singapore to print and distribute magazines and books globally. The SBPA continues to work closely with various local and international strategic partners to achieve its goals and objectives, and be much involved in Singapore’s development into an international media hub. The association also participates in regional book fairs and organises events such as the Singapore National Pavilion at the Frankfurt Book Fair and Beijing International Book Fair. Our strategic partners include Enterprise Singapore (ESG), Info-communications Media Development Authority (IMDA), National Arts Council (NAC) and National Library Board (NLB). Affiliates The association’s involvement in the ASEAN Book Publishers Association (ABPA) facilitates cooperation and co-publishing between SBPA members and their ASEAN counterparts, and members’ entry into regional markets. The association also represents Singapore at the Asia Pacific Publishers Association (APPA).
