We are the team of LED professionals Luci brand was established in 2004 and divided out as its own division in 2005 as a lighting manufacturer, Luci has since gained international awe for its impeccable range of lighting products from Japan.

Utilizing the knowledge we acquired from interior design, we were able to branch off to the business market of “indirect lighting”, a lighting technique in which lighting fixtures are kept hidden from view.

Developing a wide range of products and equipped with our unique expertise knowledge, we are able to meet the needs of our customers.

This is particularly true for hospitality spaces where “indirect lighting” has become an important and essential component today. Indirect lighting with its non-glaring and mellow light sets up a space where one can relax;

the gradation of the light generate a sense of depth and make the room appear more spacious. The role of lighting is of vital importance on top of the hotel interior design to invoke a sense of luxury, security and reliability in guests and visitors.

In this passage, we will elaborate on Luci supply processes along with the thoughts of the designers and users of Luci products. We are sincerely grateful to all the people involved for agreeing to take part in the interviews.

We recommend readers to visit and stay over at the mentioned hotels to enjoy the design concept experience. We would be pleased if this passage becomes a useful reference in making hotel spaces more luxurious.

Interview

HOTEL RISVEGLIO AKASAKA

As a furniture maker contractor based in the middle of Okawa, Kyushu, which is known as manufacturing furniture, it is my first time taking up the work of designing a hotel, or rather, it is my first time being involved in interior design itself. As I often travel around due to work, hospitality facility is a theme that IÕve developed an interest in since before. Having stayed in various hotels, IÔve always wondered why there arenÔt any interesting hotels. When I talked about this to a client at an exhibition fair, the client said: Òwe just so happen to have a project in hotel development, so why donÕt you try designing it?Ó This is how the project started. With that, I began designing with the aim of creating a Òhotel that I would want to stay inÓ. What I was most concerned with was the ÒfeelÓof the hotel. Hotels nowadays use the same colour, material and even furniture. The ÒfeelÓ is entirely the same, right? To prevent that, I designed various room types from the warm natural wood-textured rooms to the sleek metal and rocks-textured rooms with original furniture and appliances to match with it. It costs a certain amount if the furniture is designed and custom-made but this is what experienced furniture manufacturer could be utilized. Taking into account of cost in design, standard existing furniture is mixed to

Interior Design

create 80 percent of the new design. Also, art is implemented in every room. Rather than a picture in a frame, art objects are created by various artists with the walls directly drawn onto or installation to match room concepts. The aim of which is to embed a one-and-only ÒfeelÓ which can only be experienced in that room. These artists have different tastes. Some of these artists I was acquainted with and some of whom it is my first time meeting them. The belief is that by gathering many of these artists who have following fans, people will be attracted to stay over at the hotel to view their art pieces. After the interior construction is done, we stayed up throughout the nights for a week to set up and see through the productions right before the opening and it was a very fun experience. Warm color indirect lighting is mainly used in the front lobby of the ground floor to enhance the presence of black bricks, the main material, and provide a calm soothing atmosphere without being too bright. The art installation on the back of the front counter and ethanol fireplace, which does not require chimneys, creates an atmosphere in the common area. Also, in the standard guestrooms, the lighting illuminating the art in the bedrooms are limited to two down lights and the entire room is lit up mainly by the bathroom light through the glass panel as part of

the unique illumination design plan. Efforts were put into creating a relaxed atmosphere by dimming down the light as low as possible within the regulation of brightness. However, the idea is vastly different for the one and only suite room. The passageway from the door to the bedroom is 6m, and upon entering the room there is a 10m long wall straight from the corridor to the other end, on which LuciÔs Òsilux¨ KÓis installed; it plays a role in emphasizing the length while gently illuminating the huge gallery space along the wall near the corridor. It was a new experience for me and I have faced several difficulties in the midst, in particular I felt that I lacked insight in illumination design. However, I believe the idea of a novice is something fresh that cannot be replicated in other hotels. Through studies centered upon this experience, I hope to acquire skills so that I can create a space which faithfully follows my ideas.

Horikawa Street in Nijo, Kyoto.

Based on the concept of “openness

to the public”, the breakfast café space is positioned along the street to create a vibrant area bustling with guests and locals day and night.

The café space with glass panels is open to the general public and positioned in

front while the front counter lobby space is positioned at the back of the first floor. The

flow-line design is set up such that visitors of

the cafe can directly access and hotel guests can access through the side passage where has

taken a motif of the “Kyoto alley” with stone pavements.

Also, deviating from the standard materials, Japanese paper, gold leaves, porcelain tiles,

techniques were utilized for the decorations, and

as a result create a brilliant interior design where one can feel “Kyoto” as it is. The expressions of these points were made more prominent with the use of indirect lighting and linear lighting, providing variety in the design.

Circular ceiling light of the cafe What attracts the attention of the people

passing through the street is the 2700mm diameter circular lighting installed on the café

space ceiling, an icon which appeals to the people the presence of a pleasant space.

To provide a sense of unity of cafe space and front lobby space, it is planned without any wall for dividing two areas and to

emphasize the existence of itself as not just

simply a ceiling light but an icon. With these

effects and quality if it is a few mm off for the distance from the ceiling and height of the upper lighting, and for the space gap, and

Urban Hotel Kyoto-Nijo Premium

We designed the hotel with Òopenness to the publicÓ as the concept. Current business hotels tend to emphasize too much on hotel guests. Rather than being open to the public, the contrary can be said in most cases with hotels being closed off to the public. This project sparked off from the thought ÒwouldnÔt it be fun if the hotel is loved by the locals?Ó For example, consider the usual management of current business hotels, most have a specified area which serves breakfast. However, this space is often dead and unutilized in the afternoon and night. In that case, wouldnÕt it be good if this precious space, which has been made with great effort under the tough architecture conditions, be fully utilized? By converting it into a breakfast restaurant in the morning and caf in the afternoon and night where local people can drop by easily, it would become a facility which is open to the public. Hence, a proposal of separating the breakfast area from the business hotel to a certain degree and establishing an open-space independent cafeteria on the front of the first floor, which also serves an architecture representation, is raised to connect the locals to the hotel. Also, as most business hotels focus on cost as the priority, similar material and color schemes are often used

Interior Design

throughout Japan regardless of its location. However, guests, take for instance those who travelled to Kyoto, would definitely like to experience ÒKyotoÓ at the hotel, right? Therefore, starting from the plastered wall which utilizes local Juraku clay, handmade Japanese paper Washi, Shigaraki tiles, golden leaves etc, Kyoto regional products were carefully used and colour schemes were picked while taking into consideration KyotoÕs traditional colour. The usage of local materials in the space creation also aims at making it Òopen to the publicÓ. The use of expensive materials under constrained costs is greatly helped by the usage of Kyoto-like materials. With the lighting effects, the shade creates a positive effect; instead of using expensive local materials throughout the place, the same materials are used in other areas to keep the cost low. We use only lighting effects to mark a difference in room space; the places where we want to emphasize would be illuminated brightly while the places where we donÔt want to show would be kept in the shadows. I think we were able to create a new type of business hotel, which can only be experienced in Kyoto with local materials creating deep impressions on the mind, due to the adoption of this lighting design plan. At this hotel, lighting design is the main focus and Luci products were used at every corner; however what really helped us was the huge circular lighting installed

in the ceiling, as it also serves as the icon of the cafeteria. Unlike the closed off spaces of most hotels, plenty of outside light is allowed to penetrate the open space and this creates a beautiful overall light effect. Of course, it is difficult to find a lighting device capable of competing with the afternoon natural light and creating a distinctive existence, and it was only ÒLuci Power FLEX αÓ which was able to tackle this. Furthermore, if there is a 1cm offset in the dimensions of the lighting apparatus, the light would produce a totally different effect. Therefore I am greatly thankful to the Luci staffs for dispensing professional advices, creating mock-ups and conducting onsite verifications, and despite the several hard works they never complained and were responsive to needs. This project was a good opportunity for me to gain further insights into illumination, materials, finishing methods, and details. From now on too, I would like to continue in creating architectures that utilizes local materials while establishing close bonds and communication with manufacturers, craftsmen and other artisans.

HOTEL BAR GRANTiOS

The name ÒHotel barÓ is chosen to further emphasize the impression of the hotel concept - Ònew hotel style proposal that can only be experienced hereÓ. With the upcoming Olympics, there is a need to cope with the sudden increase of inbound visitors and currently, there is a rush of hotel openings not just in Tokyo, but also all over Japan. However, looking at it from a long-term perspective, this sudden boom does not seem to be able to sustain for a long time. To be able to sustain business for a long period of time, it is important not to be swept away by the current situation, and hotels should possess unique characters which is essential in garnering the support of users. This is how the proposal for the new hotel style where adults can relax in the middle of the city area through the combination of the hotel and authentic bar came about. Gentle light seeping through the impactful metallic mesh fa ade can be seen from the streets. This inviting light guides one to the second floor, a sleek and comfortable space of the combined hotel front counter lobby and classic bar. The fire burns in the fireplace alongside the wall. And, there are two groups of people who relax in that space: hotel guests who treat the space as a private bar and locals who came for the bar.

Interior Design

Some came alone to enjoy a quiet moment, while some enjoy pleasant conversations with each other; the night at the city is left to the flow of relaxing time. I came up with the concept draft and design planning with these images in my mind. The interiors of guestroom also took after this concept. Be it standard room or superior room, all seventeen rooms have different interiors. With the assumption that the repeated visitors would be able to enjoy the different styles, ÒI want to try staying in other rooms next timeÓ, ÒI want to stay at that room todayÓ etc, the idea is that visitors will be able to enjoy the different styles depending on their interest and mood. For the same reason, all of the guestrooms are fitted with indirect lighting in this hotel. It is possible to combine it with down light and brackets to make for adjustable light effects. Welcome mode, relaxing mode, night-time mode and others, there are five patterns mode pre-set and just by operating the scene selection device, guests can change the lighting mode based on their preferences. The idea of this is to create oneÕs own preferred atmosphere within the room. Luci products are used as the guestroom indirect lighting as its compatibility with the lightadjusting device is superior. With various sizes and devices available, choices can be made with the

- 19 -

light-adjustable device and other devices with good matches. The adjustment of size, light rays and colour temperature can be selected freely based on oneÕs preference by using the device which has been matched to the room design and that is one of the main reasons why Luci was selected. When I was thinking about creating a room where guests are able to enjoy, light manipulation seems to be a high cost-performance technique available. However, implementation, application, colour temperature, brightness of light are variables that can change the style of a room totally - the same room will appear to be very different with the integration of textures. Indirect lighting may be said to be expensive but considering the cost balance of the interior design, it is definitely worth its value. By knowing the focus of the object we want to show and its location, all which is left for consideration is the overall balance. Taking this hotel as an example, the atmosphere of the room is improved by matching the material of the interior with illumination and this is linked to the increased satisfaction and value of the customer when considering the business aspects.

HOTEL UNIVERSAL PORT

The USJ official hotel underwent remodeling and what was expected most out of it is its entertainment value. The key concept of the hotel is to emulate a ship with the journey beginning from Portugal to other cities all over the world with created imageries. In the middle of which, the highest level ÒPort Deep Ocean FloorÓ has ÒDeep OceanÓ as the theme and the moment one steps out of the elevator, the entire region is coated in the deep blue colour as though it is at the bottom of the ocean, providing a unique extraordinary worldview. Also, this hotel base policy is that, high quality amenities such as luxurious mattresses and selections of pillows are available to serve the aspects of guestsÔÔÒcomfortÓ and ÒtranquilityÓ. With that thought, the guestrooms were designed such that the guests take off their shoes at the entrance so that they can enjoy a clean and comfortable hotel lifestyle. The balance between entertainment value and comfort for the corner suite rooms ÒPort Deep Ocean FloorÓ on the highest level is installed with ÒLuci Power FLEX Relaxing BlueÓ in its interior. The design theme of ÒPremium PalaceÓ is ÒDeep Ocean PalaceÓ. What used to be the balcony became a living room after the remodeling and a

Interior Design

depth of 4200mm recessed ceiling was created. It is decorated with motifs of 120 fishes and is named as ÒOsaka ChandelierÓ. The fishes are illuminated by down light, upper light, and indirect lighting to create moving shadows on the wall and floor, making it appear to be in ÒDeep OceanÓ. We insisted on using Òblue lightÓto continue the atmospheric effects of the elevator hall and common corridor. However, it would be too luxurious and costly to install RGB blue colour LED for that. Well then, right when we were contemplating on what to do, LuciÕs salesperson came to our office with a sample of the ÒLuci Power FLEX Relaxing BlueÓ. The Òblue lightÓ has soothing effects which support comfortable sleep and that, is the biggest selling point. That is product kills two birds with one stone as it fits the hotel concept in terms of its entertainment value and at the same time provide comfort. We immediately had the documents arranged, and suggested the implementation of it on the bedÕs headboard and use of the multiple illumination mode settings to effectively bring out the design theme at the regular meeting. The client was also pleased with it and we were able to utilize it without any problem. This time round, ÒLuci Power FLEX Relaxing BlueÓ is used as a solution as we searched for ways to enhance the entertainment value but I think the

- 24 -

adoption of it is largely attributed to the consideration of Òsoothing effectÓ which is an important point when it comes to the versatility and fragmentation of hotel business condition. Be it city hotels, resort hotels or business hotels, to survive in the competition, it is necessary to consider and serve the guestsÕ needs. Of course, it is important to consider if it matches with the design. For the current situation, only LED strips were considered but if the utilization is expanded to surface illuminating devices, night lamp and reading lamps, it will probably widen our knowledge in the products and implementation methods. In other words, the emergence of ÒLuci Power FLEX Relaxing BlueÓ can be thought to greatly expand the potential of our design in terms of performance and functionality.
