degree of customizability, including the lengths of lighting appliances, the pitches of light sources, color temperatures, and types of tubes. Our dotless line lighting products, on the other hand, focus on the concept of “turning everything — even reflections — into beauty.” These products are all capable of creating line lighting that exactly matches the imagination of the designer, according to the light source sizes, required light intensities, and applications. At the same time, they can provide dramatic lighting that can serve as an accent for a space or as the overall lighting.

COM M ERCIAL FACI LIT Y ED ITIO N Lighting is a spice — a subtle seasoning that gently enhances the flavor of a space Indirect lighting expands a space, making rooms feel larger and creating a floating effect. Shelf lighting makes products on display stand out, while adding coloration and brilliance to the space. The advent of compact, high-powered LED light sources has spurred a dramatic increase in the number of ways that light can be used to enhance the value of a space. To ensure the most effective installation of lighting, however, requires an in-depth understanding of optimum installation positions, installation angles, color temperatures, and light intensity, as well as the ability to select the lighting appliance most applicable to the design goal. Only this way can you achieve a soft gradation of light that gently envelopes the space. Only this way can you achieve unconstrained expressions of light even in tiny places. Luci is the spice that brings your space to life with light that optimizes its comfort and attractiveness. In this edition, we’ll look at the unique characteristics of Luci products and show you how our professionals who know those characteristics inside and out can create beautiful direct and indirect lighting installations that will dramatically enhance the value of your space. 1

A showroom that invites you to stay and enjoy the subtle rhythms of the line lighting

A

This is the showroom of a car dealer located in the AEON Mall Wakayama in the suburb of Wakayama. Here in this bustling large-scale commercial facility, a quiet café was created, offering a calm space that invited people to drop in and relax while shopping. In other words, this is a showroom where people are encouraged to stick around. The sense of rhythm inside the showroom is created by a combination of line lighting arranged on the ceiling and flooring material placed obliquely with respect to the illumination. The visual effect created by this naturally leads the visitor’s line of sight deeper into the showroom. In addition, the oblique lines on the floor extend to the pillars where the indirect lighting from the full-color LEDs installed in these pillars act as a spatial accent.

ELEMENT-1 Integrated lighting system comprised of line lighting and down lighting The ceiling illumination utilizes Luci's original system that integrates base illumination called Luci Connected Light and LED downlights. By adopting the simple idea of arranging line lighting appliances and wiring ducts in parallel and just inserting downlights, we were able to achieve a streamlined design, while creating a variable lighting plan that can easily adapt to layout changes. First proposed by the client’s headquarters in Germany, this system uses an innovative design in which the Luci Connected Lights (height: 36.3 mm) poke out slightly from the 28-mm deep groove on the ceiling surface. This lighting design — which actually makes the light source visible — achieves a marvelous floating effect as if the light has been released from its base to float in the air, dramatically emphasizing the sense of existence of the line lighting.

Plane drawing of indirect lighting installation inside central pillar

ELEMENT-2 Dramatic lighting effects on central pillar surface change gradually over time To accent the space, full-color LEDs were installed in slits on the pillar surface. By bathing the surface of each pillar in softly gradating light, this design produces a subtly beautiful atmosphere that bedazzles as the colors shift over the course of time. There are four colors of light with eight patterns, and they are programmed to gradually change once every hour. The secret to the beauty of this indirect lighting is the degree to which the light leaking out of the slits extends. Based on the assumption that the compact Luci FLEX 3in1 multi would be used, the depth of the slits, the height of the tenons, the installation position of the light sources, and their angles were all carefully planned out during the design phase, and fine adjustments on the site were made as necessary. As a result, we were able to install this beautiful and impressive indirect lighting on the pillar surface simply by making a 100-mm hollow layer between the pillar itself and the pillar surface.

Dealing mainly in Uji tea and located in Gion, Kyoto, this cozy tea shop boasts a venerable tradition that stretches back more than a century and a half to its establishment in 1860. The shop is composed of a retail section on the first floor and a tea room on the second floor that serves brewed Uji tea and green tea sweets. Inspired by the concept of “beautiful rust,” LEDs were used in all light sources such as the ceiling, display fixtures, and signboards to illuminate the store’s interior which exudes the elegance and charm you would expect from such a time-honored establishment. An illumination plan was created that would maintain the shop’s ambience by utilizing surface emission and indirect illumination so that lighting fixtures could be hidden from view.

The Luci Power FLEX 20 mm pitch (customized length) is installed on a large shelf fixture with a shelf thickness of only 30 mm that runs along the entire wall surface of the retail section on the first floor. The reason this product was selected is that the length can be specified in units of 40 mm and the pitch of the LED package is a very precise 20 mm. This makes it possible to distribute light all the way to the edges of the shelf fixture, enabling uniform product illumination. To further add to the ambiance, a softly glowing luminous ceiling was installed. The combination of the luminous ceiling and shelf fixture helps generate a sense of rhythm in this shop’s interior.

In the second-floor tea room, a large-sized luminous ceiling with a wooden lattice-like structure was installed. In spite of the tiny 120-mm cove clearance depth, we were able to install the Luci Power FLEX (customized length) lighting — which offers superior compactness — to achieve beautiful surface emission and uniform surface light effect. The key to achieving this even effect is the relationship between the cove clearance depth and the layout pitch of the LED fixture. For example, according to the formula of “Layout pitch of LED fixture x 1.2 = Cove clearance depth,” when the cove clearance depth is 120 mm, the layout pitch of the LED fixture should be 100 mm or less. To ensure uniform light intensity over the entire surface of the luminous ceiling, supplementary LED fixtures were added to the corners, which typically tend to be darker.

ELEMENT-3 Indirect lighting in restrooms creates a comforting atmosphere Indirect lighting was also installed behind the mirror in the restroom. Again, Luci Power FLEX (customized length) — which offers superior compactness — was used, gently illuminating the texture of the materials used in the restroom.

The Japanese flagship store of one of Germany’s longest-established stationery producers, this store is located in the prestigious Tokyo district of Roppongi. Inside the store is divided into two zones: one where the standard product lineup is on display and one where the highend lineup is offered. We implemented a lighting plan aimed at creating an atmosphere that changed subtly in each zone while maintaining compatibility with either lineup and being functional enough to accurately show the colors of the products. In the high-end lineup zone, special white paint has been used to bring out the uneven textures, while square woodframed display shelves provide a sense of antiquity. Rarefied, flat lighting inside the display fixtures and an elegantly backlit brand logo distill an atmosphere that exudes a soothing air of quality and timelessness.

ELEMENT-1 Dotless illumination appliances produce rarefied, flat lighting inside the display shelves The display fixtures on the wall in the high-end lineup zone provide extremely confined spaces. Moreover, the products displayed on these shelves use materials susceptible to reflection — such as metals and mirror paints. Considering these conditions, we selected Luci silux® as the light sources for the illumination system that would be mounted in the frames of the display fixtures. This choice would ensure that the light distributed throughout the interiors of the display fixtures would be free of any dots. The light sources were installed on the four edges of the front of the display fixtures as close as the doors, while the angles of the light axes were set to point to the products. The resulting impression is of light that seems to expand through the interiors of the display fixtures, centering around the products. The combination of downlights with the lighting inside the display fixtures produces a rarefied flat light with a beautiful floating effect that embodies the sense of prestige and quality inherent in the luxurious, high-end stationery so precisely illuminated by the impressive lighting inside the display fixtures.

ELEMENT-3 Surface emitting signboard illumination that enhances the sense of presence Above the store’s glass façade, we installed a surface-emitting signboard light across the entire width. In spite of its moderate size, the band of light stands out brilliantly, clearly establishing the presence of this store inside the Tokyo Midtown urban complex. The light source used is the Luci Power FLEX 100V CF, which does not require a External LED driver. The adoption of this light makes it possible to achieve beautiful surface emission even in signboard illumination where there is no room to install a LED driver.

For indirect illumination of thin, small locations, the compactness of LED light sources is an outstanding choice; however, the high intensity brightness and “dot” look of this point light source — even if successfully concealed — results in their unanticipated and undesirable reflection on the finished surfaces of displayed product and interior materials — a condition that has been difficult to eliminate up to now. The Luci silux® series of slim LED line lighting responds with absolutely “dotless” illumination. Developed with the beauty of design foremost, the lighting fixture itself presents an attractive look even if viewed directly. Completely eliminating the uneven “scalloping” effect common to point light sources, the uniformity of the light-emitting surface creates elegant lighting environments where even the reflection of the lighting is beautiful. In addition, this series is compact with cross-section dimensions of 12 mm x 14.3 mm, facilitating installation with almost the same ease as strip lights. The potential applications for the Luci silux® series are virtually infinite. It is, of course, ideal for lighting high reflectivity products in relatively small, narrow display cases or furnishings such as at Graf von Faber-Castell Tokyo Midtown. However, the series also demonstrates its advantages in a variety of other scenes where the quality of design is paramount and the location of the light source may be directly in the line of sight or there is concern about reflections, for example, under-shelf lighting that is higher than eye level, frame-mounted lighting of tower-type fixtures, and footlighting of marble and other glossy floor surfaces. “Dotless” lighting is expanding the potential of LED sources and opening new frontiers for spatial design.

Featured lighting appliance

Luci silux ® This slim, compact lighting applicance completely eliminates undesirable “dots.” Available in lengths ranging from 75 mm to 1,452 mm, Luci silux® has just the right type for your needs.

An apparel shop where display fixture illumination creates a sense of spatial coherence

This is an apparel shop in Nakagyo-ku, Kyoto. Shielded by the doors but designed to rouse the visitor’s curiosity about what is behind those doors, the display fixtures are scattered around the space like objets d’art. With their flat, homogenous lighting design, a consistent spatial design is achieved even though they are given various functions such as hanger holders, shelves, and fulllength mirrors. To create this flat light, we used the Luci Power FLEX and Luci Connected Light. With the Luci Power FLEX arranged on the bottom surfaces of the shelves and the Luci Connected Light on the back of the shelves, we successfully created a lighting configuration that embodied the sense of spatial consistency by adjusting the positions and angles of the light in the display fixtures.

POINT Bendable to accommodate the curve radius.

For transforming your design vision into ceilings and walls with beautiful curved indirect lighting, the popular Luci FLEX series offers the optimum solution. The capability of this series to maintain an orientation as a light source while enjoying the freedom to install it in a curve of any radius has made Luci Power FLEX Connect (horizontal light axis) including the custom order selection and Luci Power FLEX α (vertical light axis) two of our most popular lighting application lineups. Especially for maintaining the vertical light axis while freely bending the appliance in the horizontal plane, the debut of the Luci Power FLEX α goes beyond the standard segmented Luci Power FLEX and offers revolutionary uninterrupted lighting expression with a single “cuttable” lighting appliance to precisely fit your needs. For the freedom to eloquently express your design vision with curved indirect lighting oriented horizontally or vertically, Luci FLEX series delivers the desired effect and dramatically enhances the finished quality of your interior design and lighting plan. □

This is a street-level store of a very popular brand located in the Shinsaibashi-suji shopping arcade in Osaka. This store conveys a sparkling feeling — conventionally embodied using mirrors and mirror-surface material — by intentionally showing the light sources instead of hiding them. This gives the store its own unique sense of presence, helping it stand out on a bustling street lined with boutiques. We implemented a light plan that aggressively took advantage of the dot illumination, brightness, and strong directivity, all peculiar to LED light sources. By incorporating the effects made possible by this glamorous lighting into a multi-layered sequence of scenes that first grab the attention of pedestrians walking by, then pull them into the store to look at and try the products, we created a unique and distinctive store environment that would effectively differentiate Samantha Thavasa from its neighboring stores.

ELEMENT-1 Glamorous facade lighting using the Luci FLEX ɑ We installed Luci FLEX ɑ lights, which are exposed without filters, in the slits at equal intervals on the store’s façade. As passers-by approach the store, the brilliant light seems to leap out at them. This works like a sign to enhance the degree of recognition of the store, which is the generating source of the light. Also these slits were intentionally made shallow, so the recognizable range would be expanded. Not only does this increase the degree of recognition across a wider range, it also ensures a sense of brightness as seen from the front of the store that is well-balanced by the light intensity of the interior lighting, which is set at a brighter level than ordinary stores.

The key element of the lighting configuration inside the store is the line lighting using the Luci FLEX ɑ, which was installed under the shelves of the display fixtures. Like the façade lighting, the line lighting was installed so that the LED light sources are directly exposed, conveying a sparkling feeling, which is the spatial theme of this store, without relying on light-reflecting materials such as mirrors or mirror-surface finishes. While the enclosed light aligned with the surface of the shallowly carved slit fulfills the functional role of illuminating the products, it also provides dramatic illumination. The adoption of the Luci FLEX ɑ, which boasts remarkable compactness, also facilitated a great deal of design flexibility in terms of the fact that the thickness of the shelves could be optimized for the items that would be placed on them, while putting a priority on proportional esthetics. All of this was achieved with shelves just 40 mm thick.

ELEMENT-3 Display fixtures with soft indirect lighting create a sense of variation in the selling space To create a greater sense of variation in this long, narrow space, we installed various display fixtures that use indirect lighting to provide soft illumination. By alternately placing display fixtures on the left and right that emit the sparkling feeling produced by lighting that deliberately exposes its LED sources, we created a relaxing environment where shoppers can browse in comfort, sensing something different and enticing with every step. We used the Luci Flat FLEX, which is very effective at producing soft indirect light when installed in the appropriate locations, as the light source for these indirect lighting display fixtures. The indirect light installed in the four corners at the front of the shelves and pointing inwards to the wall creates a sense of calm even in such a bright, sparkly atmosphere, giving a sense of depth to the shop space.

Hosting its own store-within-a-store in Sogo Hiroshima, a department store in downtown Hiroshima, this popular handbag brand wanted to effectively transmit its brand image within the limited space available. To achieve this, we installed multiple island display fixtures featuring a curvilinear design. The large display fixture at the center is provided with shelves whose undersides emit smooth light from along the round contours, which are the common motif of all the display fixtures. Integrating both form and light, this display creates a distinctive sense of space that highlights the brand identity and sets off the store from the greater store that surrounds it.

To emphasize its design, the large display fixture installed around the pillar is provided with lighting arranged along its round contours. For this installation, we used the Luci FLEX ɑ for the lighting pointing to the products, and the Luci Flat FLEX for the lighting pointing inwards to the pillar surface. Thanks to the incorporation of lighting appliances that feature horizontal deflectability, while maintaining upward and downward lighting directions, we succeeded in producing smooth lines of light that flow smoothly around the contours of the display fixtures. Additionally, because these lighting appliances are so compact, ultra-thin shelf thickness of a mere 25 mm — which matches the volume of the products to be placed on the shelves — was made possible. The Luci FLEX ɑ also offers tremendous design flexibility — making it possible to select the best-possible proportion according to the balance between the space and products without being forced to select an undesired shelf thickness due to restrictions imposed by the dimensions of lighting appliances.

Store-within-a-store of the ladies’ brand using light sources as materials for expression

Adjacent to JR Nagoya Station, this is a store-within-a-store in a fashion emporium aimed mainly at young women. Here we implemented space designs and lighting plans that exploit the latest lighting techniques and technology to create a sparkling, lighthearted space that dazzles and impresses. While the brightness of the space is ensured using downlights, we also installed flashy exposed lighting on the vertical planes of the shelves of the display fixtures to create even more dynamism, as well as lighting up the products using indirect lighting installed at the back of the shelves. The result is an original spatial design that makes this store-within-a-store stand out from its surroundings by scattering the sparkling feeling throughout the entire space.

ELEMENT Revolutionary lighting plan that regards LED light sources as creative forms Although the light intensity is softened by cover film, the Luci Power FLEX (custom order) is installed on the vertical planes of the shelves of the display fixtures that surround the space while the optical axes are pointing towards the center of the space. Our goal was to recreate the sense of sparkle — which had been previously expressed using indirect lighting and a finishing material reflecting that light — using the light itself, taking advantage of the dot illumination, sense of luminance, and directivity that only LED light sources can provide. Such a change in our thinking made it possible to express the new possibilities of LED light sources by having them function as one of finishing materials that compose the space.

Efficacy of lighting plans that purposefully expose light fittings and sources. Examples of “Lighting Designed to Be Seen” POINT 1 ®

Luci silux for its characteristic shaping of light and spatial accent.

In step with the maturation of spatial design, lighting design thinking has also evolved in a direction that de-emphasizes the presence of lighting fittings. There has been a shift from the simple functional objective of securing brighter space through direct lighting with pendant lights and fluorescent lamps to lighting that aims at the creation of a comfortably illuminated environment by using indirect lighting. This trend has been accelerated by the widespread adoption of high-intensity brightness LED light sources. At the same time, due to the appearance of “straight line” LED appliances like Luci silux® and Luci Connected Light that feature flat light emission, the light source itself can be purposely exposed, kindling a new trend in which the shape of the light fixture itself and the light it produces are incorporated as spatial design accents. Moreover, designs are exploiting the high-intensity brightness and “dot” character of LED point light sources a material to produce a sparkling ambience. The shift from hidden lighting to lighting designed to be seen is one of the recent trends in the lighting design concepts.

ELEMENT-2  Indirect lighting on the wall surface with continuous straight and curved lines Indirect lighting was installed on the wall surface with the continuous arches that are the most prominent design characteristic of this space. Luci Power FLEX (custom order) lights were installed along the contours of the arches. The Luci Power FLEX light was selected because it offers the unparalleled design freedom unique to the Luci lineup — that is, the length of the lighting appliances can be adjusted in 40-mm units. In addition, the strip light characteristics make it possible to radiate light along the arch contours with continuous straight and curved lines. The result is beautiful indirect lighting with the light distributed precisely through the area — even to corners. The range of color temperatures available with the Luci Power FLEX was also a big factor contributing to the decision to adopt this lighting concept. After careful study of the lineup — which includes 10 colors ranging from Warm white (1900 K) to Cool White (11600 K) as well as 5 variations of Warm white — the 3000 K version was deemed most suitable for the embodiment of the design concept.

Specialty display fixtures composed of light

These are display fixtures installed in the common space on the first floor of a commercial complex that comprises a shopping center and an office building located across the street from JR Nagoya Station. Based on the installation characteristics of the common space, we aimed at the creation of a display space that would radiate a sense of presence while minimizing interference with the designs of other spaces. For this reason, we implemented a display fixture design that would be both dramatic and functional — a design that would make the displayed products stand out while showing the light as a design element. To achieve this, we installed line lighting in the corners of frames which were made slim to eliminate the sense of substance. This innovative idea of stylization of light gave form to an original display design that felt special and distinctive in spite of its simplicity.

ELEMENT Display fixtures of light created with a dotless lighting appliance As the main element of these unique display fixtures would be light, we chose to use Luci silux® with its slim, compact design and dotless line illumination. Thanks to the compact size of these lights, we were able to install lighting in the corners of the ultra-thin frames which measured just 20 mm in depth and width. The result is stylized lighting that minimizes the presence of the frames. Also the size variations of the Luci silux® greatly contributed to the achievement of display fixture proportions that would optimize the appearance of the products displayed in the space. Ten sizes in fractionated steps from 75 mm to 1,452 mm are available. We selected 703 mm and 1,252 mm, as these most closely matched the height of the display fixtures’ (2,100 mm). This made it possible to create smooth line lighting without any noticeable gaps in the light.

Owner-managed German fashion store with elaborate finishing and lighting

This is the first store this famous German fashion brand has opened in Japan directly managed by the parent company. We carefully implemented a spatial design that boasted elaborate finishing and lighting to help ensure the store’s presence in its exclusive location — namely, Ginza 3-Chome, where the world’s most famous brands stand side by side. What gives order to this shop, which is built on a complexly shaped land, is a set of large-scale display fixtures installed in niches throughout the space such as between the pillars and recesses in the walls. Elegantly proportioned display fixtures and beautiful indirect lighting amplify the sense of presence by extending the recesses all the way up to the ceiling. As well as being integrated with the indirect lighting on the coved ceiling, they create comfortable rhythms in the space.

The display fixtures were designed to give an impression of integration with the coved ceiling and were fitted with indirect lighting that continuously lights up the wall surface and the ceiling. The Luci Power FLEX (customized length) light with tiny dimension was installed in the ceiling despite the limited cove clearance. For the vertical lighting in the display fixtures, where light sources could not be concealed, we used the dotless Luci Slim Light. This made it possible for us to implement a lighting plan that took advantage of the form of the ceiling and display fixtures to produce a unique and impressive lighting effect. Moreover, we needed to expand the light through the space without any sense of discrepancy with the light from the display fixtures. This required indirect lighting of the ceiling. Despite the smallness of the space available, after careful examination of all the relevant elements we derived an optimal solution of 13 mm for the cove panel with respect to the 50-mm cove clearance depth.

50 25

Cross-sectional drawing of inside wall

ELEMENT-2 Indirect light on the ceiling adds a sense of elegance to the space For the indirect light in the coved ceiling, we installed Luci Slim Light which has high lumen output. After examining the cove clearance dimensions, the height of the cove panel, and the installation position, we were able to configure a ceiling lighting effect with beautiful gradation — in which no light source is visible and no cut-off lines are created.

ELEMENT-3 Sophisticated shelf design for light installation The display shelves are illuminated by sophisticated detail lighting that beautifully shows off the products which are the stars of the store, so to speak. In order to be able to achieve a shelf thickness that would offer a beautiful proportional appearance, we adopted the Luci silux® lighting system featuring dotless illumination for the upper front of the shelves. This dot-free light source was deemed the best choice because there is no chance of glare even if the shelf is positioned at a height which exposes the light source. Nor does it produce reflections that would spoil the viewer’s impression of the products. To optimize the distribution of light, the light from the downward direction was placed horizontally and the light from the upward direction was set obliquely. Moreover, we took measures to facilitate the projection of light from the light

sources by making the thickness of the front part of the shelves — in which the lighting appliances would be installed — 2 mm higher on the top and 3 mm lower on the bottom than the rear part of the shelves — on which the products would be placed. In conjunction with the light from the front part of the shelves, the combination of the Luci Slim Light installed at the back of each shelf and the Luci Power FLEX (customized length) installed as the ceiling illumination at the back of the top shelf made it possible to achieve beautiful display fixture lighting that is integrated with the coved ceiling, creating an overall impression of elegance and class that reflects directly upon the products.

Indirect lighting brings out the natural and traditional materials used in this Japanese restaurant

This is a Japanese restaurant located in Nagoya Central Garden, a new development in Chigusa-ku, Nagoya. Surrounded by a lush garden, it contains a mix of dining areas, including counters, tables, Japanese-style tatami rooms, and private rooms. Natural materials such as solid natural wood, earthen walls, URUSHI WASHI — lacquered Japanese paper form the basic tones of the interior. These simple materials create a relaxing environment that combines with the green of the garden — which can be seen from anywhere in the restaurant — to make diners feel comfortable and at ease. The lighting plan that illuminates this interior features indirect lighting installed in various locations throughout the restaurant, including coved ceilings and wall surfaces. The soft gradations of light fill the interior with a sense of depth and extension while enhancing the textures and tones of the natural materials.

ELEMENT-1 Indirect lighting installed in the door headers highlights the wooden beams of the ceiling To enable diners to enjoy their meals while viewing the scenery in the garden, the Japanese-style tatami rooms are loosely divided by YUKIMI SHOJIS, or Japanese paper sliding screens, whose lower sections are made of glass rather than paper. Indirect lighting installed in the narrow spaces above the door headers throws a gentle light on the wooden boards that make up the ceiling, creating a serene atmosphere and a greater sense of depth. The light source used in this installation is the Luci Power FLEX (customized length) lights boasting superior compactness and powerful illumination capability. Although the installed lighting appliances have a compact design that made it possible to install them in the narrow 130-mm cove clearance depth, they are still able to provide more than enough light to beautifully illuminate the ceiling above the dining tables.

ELEMENT-2 Indirect lighting on the ceiling gives a sense of ease and sense of depth to the space Above the main dining area, which features both a dining counter and tables, a large coved ceiling traverses the entire space. The indirect lighting installed in the ceiling illuminates the space below, highlighting the natural materials with soft, calming light. As with the door headers, the light source installed in the coved ceiling consists of the Luci Power FLEX (customized length) lights. The light makes it possible to produce expansive and plentiful light even in confined installation spaces, as we as beautiful, uninterrupted line lighting on a large scale. Available in a choice of 5 color temperatures from 1,900 K to 3,000 K in Warm White and in custom-order lengths up to 5 meters (as a roll). The color temperature used here is 2,400 K, which most effectively enhances the natural materials inside the restaurant, while being in harmony with the green in the garden. The gradation of soft light achieved by the low color temperature makes the diner feel warm and adds a sense of ease to the space while creating a sense of depth.

They beautifully light up the ceiling and earthen walls, creating calm and relaxing atmosphere in the restaurant. Thanks to the 20-mm pitch of the Luci Power FLEX, beautiful dot-free indirect lighting can be produced in a constricted installation space. Around the counters where the main activity takes place — such as placing and picking up orders, eating, drinking, and so on, we have implemented a lighting plan that takes advantage of the rounded ceilings, illuminating them with reflections from indirect lighting and enveloping customers in a soft, gentle light. The result is an inviting space — a “forum” or meeting place where people can come together — that appears to open up to its surroundings simply through the way in which the light is manipulated in various sophisticated ways. These include the gradually gradated colors that shift seamlessly from the white at the top of the ceiling to the beige on the floor tiles and the use of the Luci Power FLEX (customized length), which is compact and makes it seem as if the light appears magically from nowhere. Careful analysis of installation locations and mounting angles assured smooth light distribution.

CASE STUDY 12

South Pier Food Court, Haneda Airport Terminal 2

RESTAURANT

ELEMENT-2 Lighting beneath the counters emphasizes horizontal lines To create a unique atmosphere, we combined the ceiling’s indirect lighting with additional indirect lighting installed below the counters. Mounted vertically and pointing to the floor surface, this indirect lighting generates two horizontal lines along the counters and the floor, further emphasizing the ceiling’s horizontal lines and creating an overall air of elegance. With so many elements blocking continuity in the horizontal direction such as glass display cases and staffonly doors, installation details were carefully considered. Top priority was placed on achieving beautiful single lines of light. As a light source, we used the Luci Power FLEX (Customized length). The compactness and flexibility of this system optimize design flexibility and allow easy on-site adjustment.

COLUMN 4

Beautiful indirect lighting begins with the excellence of light fittings and their workability within on-site installation constraints. Light fitting adaptability demanded on site POINT 1

Length can be adjusted on site. POINT 2

Constant light source pitch even connected. POINT 3

Simple to connect for anybody.

The critical point of the lighting plan is the creation of a lighting environment that conforms to the spatial design. Does the indirect lighting achieve the coverage envisaged by the designer? Does the light inside interior fixtures precisely fill every nook and corner of the enclosure? When looking down from above, is there a balance of the intensity and warmth of the lighting? Only after, of course giving careful consideration to envisaging the lighting prior to construction and performing adjustments on site can a lighting environment achieve true unity with the space. In this process, an important factor is the “workability” on site. No matter how much leeway you provide for in the planning, on-site adjustments will be indispensable to the creation of lighting just as envisaged. Because the 20 mm-pitch type of the Luci Power FLEX series can be cut at minimum distance

of every 40 mm (a segment of 2 LED light lamps), the ease of making on-site adjustments is a powerful advantage. Offering a selection of 14 color variations including 5 types of Warm white (bulb color) and pitch variations ranging from 20 mm to 50 mm, this series enables simple replacement of the lighting appliance precisely according to revised design measurements when an unexpected change in design specifications is demanded. In this series the Luci Power FLEX Connect’s simple connection of segments without the hassle of lead connections can facilitate installation of seamless lighting that maintains the light source pitch even when working in extremely restricted spots. From the planning stage to the actual on-site installation, this product frees the designer’s vision and makes it a reality.

This is restaurant that serves YOSHOKU or Japanese-style Western food. It is located on the third floor of a commercial building near Ueno Park, facing busy Chuo-dori Street. To compensate for the low ceiling imposed by the building’s strict height restrictions, we adopted various lighting techniques such as surface emission illumination at the entrance and indirect lighting on the ceiling above the dining tables with a view to creating a refined atmosphere worthy of a long-established YOSHOKU restaurant. The result is a space designed to effectively take advantage of the expansion of soft light. In particular, above and beside the dining tables by the wall-length window facing to the open-ceiling space, the ceiling has been inclined and piping is concentrated behind the wall on the lower side of the inclined ceiling in order to ensure the highest-possible height of the ceiling on the window side. By deliberately exposing the indirect lighting installed there to the outside, our goal was to use the lighting as an eye-catcher to alert passers-by to the presence of this restaurant.

By juxtaposing this light, we aimed to achieve a sense of spatial expansion, as well as a relaxing and comfortable rhythm. The light used in this installation is the Luci Power FLEX (customized length). We knew that this lighting system offered us the flexibility required to freely adjust the lamp fittings to ensure that light would be properly distributed, even in the corners, and that it would be compact enough be able to fit into the 150 mm cove clearance height to maximize the height of the ceiling. That’s why we selected the Luci Power FLEX — because it could be cut anywhere and would allow the lengths of the lamp fittings to be set freely (cuttable in increments of 125 mm at that time, now 40 mm with the latest models).

ELEMENT-2 Surface emission lighting creates a sense of splendor and drama Surface emission lighting was installed on the walls and ceiling in order to create an expansive sense of splendor and drama in the entrance space despite the restrictive conditions imposed by the low ceiling height of 2,300 mm, the closeness of the building frame to the usable space, and the requisite fire doors, which further obstructed the interior installation. For this installation, the Luci Surface Light 100V was used. This system doesn’t require the external LED driver to power the light sources, enabling the lights to be easily installed in the narrow 150-mm space, while still producing enough light to make the entire surface glow beautifully. In other words, we succeeded in installing surface emission lighting under conditions that would not have been possible with a conventional light source.

Using the space by the pillar in the reception lobby, we installed an extremely shallow-depth display case that was just deep enough to allow a single row of bottles to be placed on each shelf. We implemented a lighting plan that would beautifully show off the bottles in the display case despite its shallow depth, while distributing light to all four frame rims. The light source used here is the Luci Power FLEX (customized length). Thanks to a narrow LED pitch width that allows it to distribute light uniformly brought, this system made it possible for us to create an impressive spatial accent that distributes light evenly throughout the space — even to the corners — despite the extremely constricted installation space.

Illumination by light-emitting surfaces can have a tremendous impact on space. If the ceiling is used, the entire space can be enveloped in a soft, gentle light, or used to express a dynamic lively ambience if the aim is more unconvential. If the wall is used, the light-emitting surface can serve as an accent or sign to capture the eye. The advent of the revolutionary compactness of LED light sources compared with conventional light sources has significantly expanded potential installation scenes and made it possible to place them in extremely small spots that hitherto would never be considered. The key to successfully creating beautiful illumination with light-emitting surfaces is the uniformity of light quality over the entire surface. Depending on the location, there can be unevenness in the brightness or visibility of the “dotness” of the LED light source. These results can halve the effectiveness of the light-emitting surface, which you have gone to so much effort to design and install. The important factors to remember are “the height: the distance between the LED lamp fitting surface to the emitting surface” and “the interval: the distance between the rows in the lighting appliance arrangement.” In the case of the Luci Power FLEX series, it is possible to produce a flat even light-emitting surface without any “dotness” for a minimum depth of 50 mm, but in order to tap the full potential of this lighting appliance and create an exquisite light-emitting surface, it is essential to select an optimized combination of these two factors. Another important consideration is the setting of the degree of surface illuminance. When talking about light-emitting surfaces, there are environments that demand a high degree of illuminance such as a cosmetics boutique or places where a backlit illuminated signboard is used, and other environments like restaurants and bars that do not require a high degree of illuminance for light-emitting ceiling and wall surfaces. Accordingly, there will be a big difference in the desired “height” and “interval” when selecting the lighting appliance that best fits the environment. Responding to this demand, the broad range of light source pitches (20 mm, 30 mm, and 50 mm) in the Luci Power FLEX series supports the installation of beautiful light-emitting surfaces that conform to the requirements of the installation environment and objective.

This pizzeria is located in Okachimachi, Tokyo. The first floor features a take-out counter and tables where customers can enjoy a quick, casual meal, while the second floor offers a more traditional restaurant ambiance where meals and wine can be enjoyed comfortably. On each floor, space design and lighting planning were implemented accordingly. The first floor is an active space where movements of kitchen staff can be viewed centering around the pizza oven laid out near the entrance. A unique atmosphere is created by line lighting with a motif of a lightning bolt that serves both functions as a ceiling light and a dramatic lighting effect. Meanwhile, the ringshaped decorative lighting on the ceiling and the indirect lighting on the walls creates a sense of rhythm and expansion at the spacious dining tables and seats. By ingeniously incorporating the concept of “show-off” lighting with different expressions on both floors, a uniquely original space design has been created.

ELEMENT-2 Indirect lighting beneath the counter that adds a sense of depth to the space Below the counter of the pantry at the back of the first floor, we made slots between the storage doors and counter walls and installed indirect lighting that brilliantly lights up the slots in cobalt blue. We wanted to create a sense of depth in the space by guiding the customers’ lines of sight naturally to the back. The light source used in this installation is the Luci Power FLEX Connect, which offers superior installation capability in confined spaces, while allowing on-the-spot fixture length adjustments. Using an appliance that can be modified on-site allowed us to install beautiful indirect lighting that distributes light effectively to all corners, even in tight spaces where subtle errors in finished dimensions are likely to occur.

ELEMENT-1 Lightning bolt-shaped line lighting generates a sense of movement and energy On the ceiling of the first floor, we installed line lighting in the shape of a lightning bolt using the exposed Luci silux®, which features dotless straight-line lighting. The implementation of a lighting design that deliberately shows the lighting appliance conveys a heightened sense of energy and activity. In order to add a sense of three-dimensionality to the line lighting, two color temperatures of 2,700 K and 5,300 K were selected from the Luci silux® lineup, which features color temperatures ranging from 2,400 K to 7,100 K in seven steps. By creating single line lighting in a combination of different color temperatures, our goal was to increase the sense of presence of the “show-off” lighting by emphasizing its peculiar configuration.

A ring-shaped decorative lighting system equipped with surface emission directed inwards illuminates second-floor dining space. Together with the indirect lighting installed on the wall surface, these graceful lighting appliances suffuse the entire floor with a soft, gentle light, creating a space that’s both cheerful and comfortable. The light source in this installation is the Luci Power FLEX (customized length), which is part of the same series as the indirect lighting installed below the counter. In addition to its customizability — which allows installation in confined spaces and facilitates on-site adjustment, the adoption of this light source made it possible to create elegant ring-shaped lighting a mere 30 mm thick capable of producing beautiful expansive light via surface emission that flows along the rounded contours of the surface, effectively illuminates the entire surface without any dark spots.

For indirect lighting

Boasting compactness that far exceeds conventional lighting, the advent of LED light sources has expanded the possible scenes where indirect lighting and lightemitting surfaces can be used. The reason is that places where the extremely small and restrictive installation space prevented these lighting methods now can be considered. However, the demand for lighting appliances for indirect lighting and light-emitting surface applications that can be installed in even smaller spaces is on the rise. Answering this demand, Luci Power FLEX 100V CF can be directly connected to an existing power outlet without using a LED driver. Even if a typical lighting appliance can fit in the very slim space, it is also necessary to somehow hide the LED driver in the restricted space. In other words, space-saving circumstances that do not allow for locating the LED driver also mean that creating indirect lighting or a light-emitting surface in that space is not possible. Luci Power FLEX 100V CF is the solution for these ultra-slim space restrictive installations and can make all these lighting applications a reality. With the industry’s slimmest lighting appliance at 12 mm and direct 100 V AC outlet connectability, it is only necessary to give consideration to factors like heat radiation measures and appliance replacement, making possible installation of indirect lighting or lightemitting surfaces in ultra-slim space with greater ease and effectiveness.

RESTAURANT

French restaurant whose unique atmosphere is created by layers of indirect lighting

Located in Roppongi, Tokyo, this is the first restaurant launched in Japan by Jean-Georges, a renowned French eatery in New York that has been awarded 3 stars by Michelin. There are only 34 seats, with open-kitchen counter seats on the first floor and ordinary table seats on the second floor. Apparently inspired by Japanese sushi bars, the first floor seats feature face-to-face services. An exquisite and elegant atmosphere is created by the multi-layered indirect lighting on the marble counters set back in the shape of a lightning bolt. This pattern is reflected in the hanging walls above the counters, as well as the walls at the back of the kitchen. Illuminated almost entirely by indirect lighting that incorporates two automatic dimmer settings for dinner time and dessert time, this space also creates an impressive night scene for the street thanks to the light that leaks out of the glass-covered façade and the marble wall surface installed as the background for the counter. 12000

The dramatic atmosphere inside this restaurant is created by multi-layered indirect lighting installed under the counter, hanging walls, and kitchen walls. In addition, three line-shaped pendants incorporating downlights to attractively illuminate the dishes are installed as an accent above the counter. The light source used for this indirect lighting is the Luci Power FLEX (customized length). In order to effectively distribute light even to the corners, this lighting appliance, which allows you to freely control the position of the light sources and pitch intervals, was selected for this lightning bolt-shaped lighting plan which features a repetition of perpendicular light. Acrylic plates are installed on the emission surface of this indirect lighting system. By spreading the light through the plates, we further emphasized the softness of the light.

Handrail lighting to enhance both the design and functionality. [Design Element]

[Functionality]

Safety & Guidance Footlight

Handrail

zoom

Lighting without perception of its source By taking advantage of LED’s unique compactness and embedding the lighting in the handrail, the lighting plan becomes an integrated and concrete part of the architecture.

Instead of footlights that result in patches of light and darkness, handrail lighting directs illumination downwards from waist level, effectively lighting a broader area. By easing visual recognition of the floor surface conditions and step height, the illumination can help prevent injurious falls. In addition, the line of light enables easy confirmation of the path to a destination, and thus fulfills an effective guidance role.

Anti-crime Pole Light

Lighting to bring out the qualities of wall and floor surfaces The light also falls on nearby walls and flooring, effectively accenting the construction materials and their carefully selected textures.

For outdoor strolls at night, the continuity of light delivered by handrail lighting compared with the clear patches of light and darkness produced by pole lighting both improves visibility of path conditions and gives the impression of improved overall brightness of the illuminated area. Moreover, handrail lighting does not create dark patches and consequently contributes to crime prevention.

Handrails are an essential installed along corridors and paths, stairs and walls. Their significance focuses on their functionality as a means to provide support or stability, something to hold onto, an aid for walking, and a preventative against injurious falls. The addition of lighting as an element not only augments functionality, but also the design, vastly expanding its role. The merit of handrail lighting from a design perspective is simplicity while enabling the creation of dramatic space. By providing a straight line of light in the space, it creates an impressive scene. Also the combination of footlights and the role of indirect lighting as a single presence can cause the personality and shades of materials used for the floor and wall surfaces to emerge, creating space with a distinctive character. Moreover, because it can freely conform to straight lines and curves, a lighting plan that exploits the exquisite lines possessed by the architecture and fixtures can be realized in concrete detail. Naturally handrail lighting also delivers the functional benefit of improved safety for the users of the illuminated area by providing a continuous path of light free of dark patches to heighten visibility of footing. This small lighting appliance that is ensconced in the handrail which is in turn gripped in someone’s hand is opening up new possibilities in space design.

High-quality space created by uniformly specified footlights covering all the tenant shops

This is the food floor of a department store located in Sakae, a busy shopping area in Nagoya. A total renovation was undertaken, and both the lighting plan and the interior design were completely redone. The key to this lighting plan is that the footlights for all display fixtures — including the refrigerator cases — were standardized in terms of the designation of appliances and installation dimensions, despite the fact that the various display fixtures were made by different manufacturers. The way the bottoms of the display fixtures look, which is important for the creation of overall impression of the floor (accommodating about 170 tenants) in addition to the ceilings and walls, was standardized — including the reflection of light on the floor material. In so doing, we aimed to create a streamlined, high-quality selling space.

In response to the department store’s request to help achieve a streamlined floor design without any glare from reflected LED dots on the reflecting floor surface, we selected the Luci Slim Light for all the display fixtures on the food floor. The biggest feature of this dotless lighting appliance is that it does not suffer from the reflection of a point light source peculiar to LED lamps. Thanks to its slim design, this appliance is ideal for installation in constricted spaces such as inside display fixtures while achieving the brightness equivalent to that of conventional light sources. We also built maximum flexibility into our lighting plan by providing adjustable clips for easy on-site changing of installation angles. This made it easy to solve the problem of subtle deviations in light effects in display fixtures from one tenant to the next, caused by the fact that the display fixtures were typically managed by the tenants themselves.

We took part in the renovation of the common spaces of a fashion center located in Tenjin, Fukuoka and oriented towards young women, including all the restrooms and the spaces around the escalators. The renovation theme was the creation of a joyous, sparkling feeling. In the spacious ladies’ restrooms, several makeup areas were installed. The lighting plan added brilliant colors to the space with ring-shaped lighting on the ceiling as well as indirect lighting installed on the wall surfaces and behind the mirrors — which all helped produce the desired sparkling feeling. By selecting highly reflective material for the finishing material and highly reflective color tint, we implemented a space design that would fill the space with brilliant light.

This is a shopping mall located across the street from the Seibu Ikebukuro Line’s Kotesashi Station, in Tokorozawa, Saitama, a suburb of Tokyo. The main floor houses Ito-Yokado’s Shokuhinkan supermarket, while the second floor accommodates various tenant shops. In order to create a welcoming feeling for shoppers as well as to appeal to commuters going home after work with nighttime lighting, we installed dramatic round-shaped lighting on the ceiling facing the glass-covered façade, allowing the ambiance inside to be viewed from the outside. Together, the indirect lighting situated in the inverted tray ceiling, and the four custom-made pendants of different sizes and heights, which lead away from the circular frame in a weaving line, create a sense of brilliance and energetic activity that broadcasts the presence of the store to passers-by in front of the station. This distinctive lighting design visible through the façade made it possible to implement store plans aimed at enticing customers using light.

ELEMENT-1 Circular frame lighting that simulates a coved ceiling and uses flowering dogwood as a motif On the ceiling of the main entrance, indirect lighting is installed in a circular frame. The center of the frame is decorated with reliefs of flowering dogwood — a symbol of this area. To maximize the effect of lighting with restricted budget and ceiling height, we selected an innovative method of simulating a coved ceiling by using a hanging frame. By installing the circular wooden frame on the ceiling and building indirect lighting into it, we were able to obtain a lighting effect similar to that of the indirect lighting in a coved ceiling. The light source used here is the Luci Power FLEX ɑ, which is ideal for incorporating light in a confined space. This model was chosen because it can be freely bent in the horizontal direction with respect to the light source surface, enabling the lights to be arranged along a rounded lighting equipment.

ELEMENT-2 Custom-made pendants that create three-dimensional light Four custom-made pendants in various sizes hang from the ceiling next to the glass-covered façade seemingly in sequence with the circular frame lighting. They feature a double construction with milky-white acrylic rings covered by nontransparent circular opaque-white acrylic plates. The outer plates are etched with flowering dogwood patterns. The light sources were installed at the upper points between the acrylic plates and pointed downward, achieving an effect in which soft light leaks out of the etched sections while the patterns stand out in vivid contrast. The Luci Power FLEX ɑ was also used in this installation because of its ability to be bent freely in the horizontal direction with respect to the light source surface. This made it possible to arrange the light so that it runs faithfully along the steep contours of the pendants, the smallest of which has a diameter of 2,100 mm. By creating decorative lighting with three-surface emission measuring 250 mm square with only one lighting appliance, we created the maximum effect with minimum cost.

This is a hair salon located in Minami-Aoyama, Tokyo. To appeal to the tastes of female customers between 20 and 40, this salon created a French shabby chic ambiance by painting the walls with distressed paints in shades of amber and gray. Antiqued and distressed furniture reinforces the effect. To emphasize the walls, we installed indirect lighting that emphasizes the texture of the paint finish. This ambiance is not restricted to the main salon space but extends to the entire space including the shampoo room, entrance lobby, and restrooms. By implementing a lighting plan that focused on the dramatization of the space, while providing functional lighting to illuminate the hairdresser’s hands and the customer’s face with appropriate color and light, we succeeded in creating a design that brilliantly embodies a space whose product is beauty.

ELEMENT-1 Indirect lighting emphasizes the distressed paint on the walls In order to effectively illuminate the distressed paint on all the walls of the hair salon, we wanted to create gradations of beautiful light by emitting indirect lighting from the upper sections of the walls. Care was taken to ensure that the light sources were hidden from the customers, that the cut-off lines were inconspicuous, and that the joints of the light sources were seamless. Assuming that there is little chance of a customer walking close to the wall, we implemented an installation plan with sufficient space between the light and the illuminated surface on the top of the wall. The Luci Power FLEX (customized length) lights were used to create a continuous line of light. Despite its compact design, this system is able to provide high-intensity illumination powerful enough to light up a large wall surface.

A lighting plan that combined indirect lighting with moderate intensity and antique brackets was implemented in the shampoo room, the main theme of which is luxury. Indirect lighting installed below the towel dispensers (towel storage units on the wall with holes on the bottom that allow the stylists and assistants to take out the towels), which are aligned with the pillar surface, provides a faint, subtle illumination. The Luci Power FLEX (customized length) lights were used as the light source. Compact enough to install in confined spaces, these lights provide indirect lighting with sufficient light intensity. Adoption of this light source enabled us to successfully install indirect lighting — the key to the creation of the desired ambiance — despite the restrictions imposed by the limited dimensions, the design aspect of aligning with the pillar surface, and the functional aspect of serving as towel boxes.

ELEMENT-3 Entrance lobby with coved ceiling and indirect wall lighting In the entrance lobby where the same distressed paint was used, we installed indirect wall lighting that gently highlights the texture. To amplify the French shabby chic ambiance created by the wall surfaces in the entrance space, we also installed indirect lighting in the coved ceiling. For both the walls and ceilings, we used the Luci Power FLEX (customized length) lights as the light source. Compact models were selected to enable installation of indirect lighting in spaces that were not as roomy as those available in the main salon space. To add drama, we chose a color temperature for these spaces of 3,000 K. The overall ambiance of the salon was made complete by including 4,000 K downlights, which are required for accurately checking haircuts and hair color in the salon.

COLUMN 8

For “no compromise” color temperature in the lighting plan Color temperature dramatically influences spatial ambience.

オレンジ系照明写真

Color temperature of 2,400 K for an atmosphere befitting a high-class French restaurant.

Dotless illumination with a color temperature of 7,100 K for an active atmosphere.

Depending the business type — whether the client is restaurant, bar, boutique, hair salon, department store or shopping center — and the targeted customer, the desired color temperature will vary. Is it an open space or does it have an intimate atmosphere? Is the desired ambience luxurious or casual? Depending on the objective and concept of the space, the atmosphere we want to create will differ. The key to realizing a lighting plan that responds to these and other conditions is access to variations in color temperature from the lighting appliance. Even for the color temperature generally called “bulb color,” the atmosphere will be drastically changed by the difference between 2,100 K and 3,000 K. By intentionally combining

subtle color temperature differences, it becomes possible to imbue space with a variety of nuances that fulfill the design vision. In order to meet these requirements, the Luci Power FLEX series features selection of 10 ranks of color temperature (1,900 K to 3,000 K) including 5 Warm white (bulb color) ranks. The “dotless” illumination of the silux® series offers a choice of 7 ranks of color temperature from 2,400 K to 7,100 K. This choice empowers designers with ability to conceive and realize lighting plans without compromise and in perfect conformance with their commercial space concept.

degree of customizability, including the lengths of lighting appliances, the pitches of light sources, color temperatures, and types of tubes.
