dedicated supporters like you, we saw a successful one of growth and innovation. Your support of our Most Urgent Needs means that we were able to support priorities across VCH. No other health care charity in BC supports the diverse, complex and specialized range of medical services that we do. From cancer surgeries to global research, more than 6,000 multidisciplinary staff serve more than 650,000 residents across their lifespan regardless of ethnicity, gender, religion and socioeconomic status. Our partners are on the ground in the Downtown Eastside, in the public health clinics throughout our neighbourhoods and on the units of our hospitals. No health need is beyond their expertise.
Striving for Transformation When the life of a loved one hangs in the balance, each of us wants to know they are receiving the best treatment available and the latest equipment is being used. Donor gifts to our Most Urgent Needs are combined with those of others to purchase the most technologically advanced equipment and accelerate research. A rigorous process makes certain these donations go where they are needed most. You helped VCH reinvent what patient care is and what it can be.

No one more so than our health care stars, who have been there for our community every day, providing life-saving care to both COVID-19 patients and to the tens of thousands of other patients who access our hospitals and health care centres every year. Every day health care needs didn’t pause during the pandemic, and neither did they. Joyce Huang Xinyi (Joyce) Huang is a senior at York House School. An avid reader and published writer, she has enjoyed her roles for the past few years as a journalist and editor for both the literary journal Pluvia and school newspaper The Blackwatch. She has also made use of her writing skills and eagerness to learn as a codirector of Indigenous S-hulí, where she attempts to educate both herself and her community on Indigenous topics through social media platforms.
18
She spends her free time imagining the ends to stories and agonizing over diction in her writing – the latter probably because of her peculiar passion for learning about etymology and grammatical systems. Fluent in English and Mandarin, she is now studying Latin, Attic Greek, French, as well as several programming languages, in particular Java and Python. Having long since fostered a fascination for mythology in addition to languages, and more recently discovered her interest in philosophy and the digital humanities, Joyce hopes to pursue Classics – a subject that unites all of her favorite fields – in university.

offline activities. I hope our actions will inspire more young people, to make the world into a happier, simpler, and better place. When the pandemic struck, we realized the importance of having a healthy body is the essential foundation. Children and teenagers should understand their bodies from a young age and learn to be friends with their bodies too. Since 2019, we’ve collaborated with different health experts to create nearly 200 health-related videos. In recent years, I’ve noticed more and more young girls falling into body image anxieties, with eating disorders becoming a growing social issue. We’ve decided to help teenagers struggling with eating disorders from various angles. With the power of children we need to make more efforts to make the world into a better place. When we grow up, we can proudly tell the next generation of young people that every action we make today is a gift for the future!
