FUNDRAISING FOR MOST URGENT NEEDS About The Cause

VGH & UBC Hospital Foundation ensures our experts have the tools and resources they need to provide vital care and move research forward to change the trajectory of disease.

You are Our Strength

Thousands of you stepped up to support the frontlines across Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH) as you know the needs of our patients and families remain constant. Pandemic or not, people continue to need lifesaving surgeries, urgent consultations and specialized treatment. Cancer is still a real threat for tens of thousands of British Columbians, there is no cure for diabetes or heart failure and accidents will always happen. Your support of our Most Urgent Needs ensures our experts have the tools and resources they need to provide vital care and move research forward to change the trajectory of disease.

Year of Innovation

VGH & UBC Hospital Foundation plays an important role in ensuring that the investments made by our donors are used as intended, that they have an impact, and that we are accountable to you. Thanks to dedicated

10

supporters like you, we saw a successful one of growth and innovation. Your support of our Most Urgent Needs means that we were able to support priorities across VCH.

No other health care charity in BC supports the diverse, complex and specialized range of medical services that we do. From cancer surgeries to global research, more than 6,000 multidisciplinary staff serve more than 650,000 residents across their lifespan regardless of ethnicity, gender, religion and socioeconomic status. Our partners are on the ground in the Downtown Eastside, in the public health clinics throughout our neighbourhoods and on the units of our hospitals. No health need is beyond their expertise.

Striving for Transformation

When the life of a loved one hangs in the balance, each of us wants to know they are receiving the best treatment available and the latest equipment is being used. Donor gifts to our Most Urgent Needs are combined with those of others to purchase the most technologically advanced equipment and accelerate research. A rigorous process makes certain these donations go where they are needed most. You helped VCH reinvent what patient care is and what it can be.

MostUrgentNeeds TOGETHER, WE ARE TRANSFORMING HEALTH CARE

You can ensure our experts have the tools and resources they need to provide world-class care and move research forward to support the future of BC’s health care system.

From complex cancer and transplant surgeries to world-leading research, VGH and UBC Hospital treat some of the most complex cases in BC, including 60% of all adult trauma surgeries. Donor funding supports a constellation of hospitals and health care centres: VGH, UBC Hospital, GF Strong Rehabilitation Centre, Vancouver Community Health Services and Vancouver Coastal Health Research Institute.

The pandemic challenged all of us like never before. No one more so than our health care stars, who have been there for our community every day, providing life-saving care to both COVID-19 patients and to the tens of thousands of other patients who access our hospitals and health care centres every year.

Every day health care needs didn’t pause during the pandemic, and neither did they. Your gifts supported our health care heroes throughout it all, providing vital funds to equip front line health care workers with the equipment, tools, and technology they need to provide world-class care at our hospitals and health care centres.

Academic Award Recipient

Orapin Amornteerasawas

As the first-ever female champion of this award, Orapin Amornteerasawas strives to use her knowledge for a better world.

Orapin has always been interested in healthcare from a young age, which has led her to write academic research papers in association with the Vancouver

General Hospital and the University of British Columbia.

Having been peer-reviewed and published by prestigious universities and medical journals worldwide, the articles serve to raise awareness of the importance of equity and diversity in different healthcare sectors among minority groups throughout North American academic faculties and shed light upon the lack of diversity in the medical field. She has also used her knowledge to provide Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Training conferences to doctors from all over Canada, equipping them with the skills to provide a level playing field for all patients. As the internal director for Project Pulse Vancouver, Orapin has hosted medical conferences that provide youth with knowledge of different healthcare sectors and knowledge directly from healthcare professionals.

Orapin has finished every year on the Dean’s Honour List in the faculty of Health Sciences so far and has been awarded the Scholarship of Distinction at her university. She has also served as a student representative, where she helped other students in their academic journey.

Hannah You

My name is Hannah You, I use the pronoun she/her. I am currently a grade 10 student studying in Stratford Hall. I am extremely passionate toward any arts related creations. I learned sketching and dancing since the age of three and tried multiple instruments throughout the years. In 2020, I created my first short story that reflected upon special issues I observed. In 2021, following the short story, I created another poem that discussed another similar problem. Throughout the

process, I collaborated with my peers and tutors who supported me in peer editing and providing feedback on the drafts of my stories. In the future, I plan to continue strengthening my art skills while improving my academic performances.

Throughout the process of creating artworks, I consistently practised the skills of reflection and communication. I am capable of reflecting upon my personal dilemmas and transfer them into the themes and plots of my stories, thus enabling the stories to be more relatable with the audiences. Secondly, when producing both sketching and literary pieces, the practice of effective communication skills allows my writing to deliver the intended message and thus achieve my goals of art creation.
