history of St. Francis School and St. Francis High School. After 47 years as a Preschool and/or K-8 School on the Goshen and Harrods Creek Campuses and after 36 years as a High School downtown, the St. Francis Schools came together as one Preschool12th Grade School on three campuses and became St. Francis School: Downtown, Goshen and Harrods Creek. The Schools had discussed a merger for several decades, but one thing or another always prevented what most agreed made sense. However, in 2011-12, all the stars aligned: two Boards of Trustees made quick work of the due diligence and voted to merge the Schools on February 22, 2012. The merger took effect on July 1, 2012. On behalf of the entire St. Francis Goshen and Preschool community, I would like to thank Head of School John Delautre for his outstanding service to St. Francis School, Goshen and Harrods Creek Campuses. While he accomplished many things in his sevenyear tenure, we are most indebted to him for bringing the School back to its original Progressive mission and helping to name that tradition for us. He did much to help bring the community together in understanding that we are in excellent company with other likeminded schools around the country, such as Francis Parker School in Chicago, the Shady Hill School in Cambridge, Ma, and the Sidwell Friends School in Washington D.C. We wish him well in his next endeavor as Head of the Whitfield School in St. Louis. Enrollment continued to be a struggle on the Harrods Creek Campus in 11-12: the Preschool opening enrollment was 93, down from 112 the previous year. Opening enrollment was a bit steadier on the Goshen Campus at 222, down from 228 the previous year; there were two kindergarten sections and one mid-year transfer. The High School’s opening enrollment was 124, up one student from the previous year, and the freshman class was over goal with 32 students starting out – the largest in the last decade – and eight transfer students. Six more students transferred in during the school year, and three left us, leaving a closing enrollment of 127. The exciting news is that Admissions 2

Fundraising activity was strong on all campuses in 2011-12, likely due in part to the positive buzz surrounding the merger. Both the major Galas were some of the more successful in recent memory, with Our Good Earth netting $71,000, and Imagine netting over $90,000. The Preschool Palooza also brought in an impressive net of $16,000. We couldn’t have done it without the outstanding work of our Chairs and their able committees: Denise Ragland for Our Good Earth, Scott Gregor and Terri Bass for Imagine, and Debbie Emberson for the Palooza.

Finally, thanks go to the Parent Association Chairs on all three campuses. The Preschool Parent Association, under the leadership of Amanda Kuster, provided the Preschool Campus with over $4,300 to fund needed items; the Goshen Campus Parent Association, led by Denise Ragland, granted over $14,200 in necessary funding; the Downtown Campus Parent Association, under the leadership of Sarah Harlan, provided almost $13,000 in faculty/staff grants. In addition, the Parent Associations were instrumental in helping to welcome new families to our campuses, host a number of great, well-attended events for our families, and spearhead appreciation lunches and holiday gifts for our faculty and staff. Thanks for all your hard work.

Our Annual Funds also were quite successful in 11-12 with the Preschool-Goshen Campuses raising $120,000, and the Downtown Campus raising $195,500. The Downtown Campus also received over $33,000 in Talented Minority Youth Scholarship gifts, as well as just over $1,300 for the New American Scholarships. In addition, the High School was named a Confucius Classrooms Networks School on the Downtown Campus, which came with a $10,000 grant that

2011-12 is a year none of us in the St. Francis community will soon forget. We accomplished a truly great thing for our Schools by coming together and we are already seeing the fruits of the merger in terms of enrollment and fundraising growth for our newly united School. As always, though, we are truly indebted to our many loyal supporters who have helped to create a brighter future for St. Francis School. Here’s to a prosperous and joyous 2012-13 and beyond.

activity really picked up with news of the merger, particularly on the Goshen and Downtown Campuses, and it looks as if attrition will also be down on the Goshen Campus, so we expect better enrollment news for 2012-13.

WHAT NONE OF US COULD HAVE IMAGINED, at the start of the 2011-12 school year, is that it would be our last as stand-alone entities, St. Francis School and St. Francis High School. When we opened our doors for the first days of school in August, we had no idea that by Graduation, our Boards would only be weeks away from a merger into Louisville’s only Preschool - 12th grade Independent school The year brought successes for our students in academics (Governor’s Cup, Math League, and Quick Recall triumphs for our Downtown Campus, and a State Chess Champion, a Math Counts trophy, State level Language Arts winners for our Goshen Campus) the arts (Literary LEO awards, and the Actors Theatre New Voices Young Playwrights Festival for the Downtown students and a National Youth Arts Drama Award, and Fine Arts Evening at the Speed Museum for our Goshen Students, as well as numerous drama productions for both) and athletics (a three-peat as Kookaburra

Klassic champions in Varsity field hockey, strong soccer seasons, basketball wins, regional tennis and track accomplishments for all teams, along with an expanded Lower School athletics), just to list a few. Our Preschoolers brought up the adorable level of the School to a new high, all while exploring and learning their way toward becoming independent young students in our Kindergarten. We graduated a fascinatingly eclectic group of seniors and sent them off to the usual diverse group of colleges. Throughout the year, an indescribable one as we said goodbye to one era and welcomed a new one, the constant was you, our supporters. St. Francis cannot exist, cannot enable our students to achieve all these successes, without your help. Our school provides the most extraordinary education for two-year-olds through seniors anywhere in our region. We are so glad to be part of bringing this to our students, faculty, staff, and families, and grateful for your support that makes it all possible.

GOSHEN YEAR-IN-REVIEW

PRESCHOOL YEAR-IN-REVIEW

THE 2011–12 SCHOOL YEAR AT ST. FRANCIS Goshen started normally enough (as normally as a Progressive Junior Kindergarten – 8th grade Independent school year can start!). However, things took a turn towards the unexpected early on, when John Delautre, our Head of seven years, announced his departure and the search for a new Head began. Our faculty and administration went about their business during the fall, and the students continued to receive the wonderful education and personal attention for which we are known. (And, of course, thanks to John for all the wonderful things he did for St. Francis in his tenure here!) In the process of the Head search, our Board of Trustees announced that we were beginning to enter into discussions with longtime “Sister School,” St Francis High School, about the possibility of a merger between these two outstanding and likeminded educational institutions. As the Head search continued concurrent with the merger conversations, one thing became increasingly clear: this “marriage” of schools with shared historical links made perfect sense in ways that were educational, philosophic, and strategic. On top of that, we already had the perfect Head of School candidate right at our fingertips! Alexandra Thurstone, an alumna of both the Goshen and Downtown Campuses, and current Head of School on the Downtown Campus, was a willing candidate for this dynamic new position. So, from the depths of roiling uncertainty, we emerged with a stronger St. Francis School, one with three campuses, shared beliefs, and the perfect person to lead us into the future!

of “normal and successful,” of course, was the amazing accomplishments of our students. In academics, we produced two state chess champions; our Math Counts team earned a trophy in the always-difficult Jefferson County region; and we had winners selected in the Scholastic Arts and Writing Awards Competition and the State Language Arts Contest. In athletics, it was a year in which we greatly expanded our Lower School athletic offerings. Many more teams were added with a combination of faculty, parent, and community coaches, thereby giving our younger students more exposure to the positive lessons imparted by sports. A new sport, lacrosse, debuted in the Middle School to spirited reviews. Thanks to a generous parent donation, a new scoreboard was erected on our main playing field behind the School, and we celebrated the sports seasons with our first-ever Middle School Sports Banquet in the spring!

IN A SCHOOL KNOWN

FOR ITS STRONG ARTS

PROGRAM, 2011-12 MIGHT HAVE BEEN ONE OF THE

BEST YEARS EVER!

While this all evolved in a seamless and synergistic way, I think what I will remember most about the 2011-12 school year is just how successful, and, yes, “normal” it was despite all the change and uncertainty. Part 12

In a School known for its strong arts program, 2011-12 might have been one of the best years ever! In the annual Kentucky Music Educator’s Association State Choir competition, we placed nine students in the various choirs who performed at the Kentucky Center for the Arts, a huge representation for a school of our size. Our Art Department arranged for another Artistin-Residence experience for our children by bringing in fiber artist Collis Marshall to

choreography); and acted out skits. Our Service Learning initiative also grew by leaps and bounds this year! Every grade level chose its own area of service and then studied about a particular problem, either locally or globally, and picked a way to contribute to an organization. We had a wonderful assembly near the end of the year at which each grade level presented its projects, shared stories, and showed videos and pictures. It is such a joyous program and our students are truly inspired to help others and be difference-makers. work with our students in the fall. The SFS Drama Project produced another rich and wonderful season. The fall marked the 20year anniversary of “a certain director’s debut” with the Thornton Wilder American classic Our Town; thus, we did a revival! The 2011 version was both humorous and touching and certainly enhanced by guest co-director Mark Sawyer-Dailey, a renowned Actors Theatre of Louisville alum! Our 4th graders made theatre magic with You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown in the winter, and the campaign was capped off by the swashbuckling French classic Cyrano de Bergerac in the spring. The drama program also received an amazing boost when we were notified that our 2010 production of Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew was nominated nationally for six Youth Arts Awards: best junior-high production, best direction, and four acting nominations. Congratulations to Gray Thurstone '10 and Marti White '10 for capturing best actor and actress! Marti and I traveled to New York last summer to accept the awards in person. To wrap up the year with a true highlight, our biannual Fine Arts Evening was held at the J.B. Speed Art Museum. Against this incredible backdrop, our students acted as docents, explaining museum artwork to parents and guests; showcased their own art; gave musical performances (some to

When you toss in the St. Francis annual “staples,” such as Grandparents’ Day, the Kindergarten Derby, St. Francis School/the Blessing of the Pets, the Buddy Program, our Spanish exchange with Mirabal Academy in Madrid, our Outdoor Education trips to places such as Pine Mountain and Big South Fork, and of course, our always memorable Graduation, it almost seems an abundance of riches. I think that’s exactly the case. I was recently visited by two of our alums who are now high school seniors and we had a great time reminiscing. One of them remarked, “This is the best place ever. When I enter the working world, and someone asks me where I went to school, my answer will be St. Francis School, no matter where I go to college.” I recall one year telling the faculty as we left for the summer that, “We will be back, and we’re going to flourish!” Ending this year with anticipation of the newly united St Francis School in 2012-13, we knew the flourishing certainly would begin.

LAST YEAR MARKED OUR 17TH YEAR

educating young children at the Preschool. Excited to embark on another year of learning with our Preschoolers, our summer professional development focused on dual language learners and documentation of learning. We had several wonderful trainers who led us through the latest research in these areas. We returned from summer break to see new additions on the Preschool playground. The beautiful additions of a sandpit, bridge, ornamental grasses (hide and seek is more fun), and stage completed Phase One of our natural playground project. We are thrilled to offer these experiences in nature to our Preschoolers. Last year, we participated in several on- and off-campus field trips to extend learning in the classroom. We hosted another great Transportation Day with an ambulance, trucks, police cars, horses, and too many others to mention. Our 4s and JK classes attended Ferdinand the Bull at Stage One, which happened to be one of their favorite books. Another off-campus field trip was to the Goshen Campus for a fall festival celebration, where we enjoyed a sing-a-long, searched for the perfect pumpkin, and ate snack with our buddies in the 6th grade. All of these activities engaged our students in their community. What started out as a typical school year ended so differently than I could have imagined. Now we are the only Independent School in this area with students two years old through High School.

IT’S EXCITING TO BE A PART OF ST. FRANCIS SCHOOL! 13

ELI BEARD

SUZANNE GORMAN

DOWNTOWN YEAR-IN-REVIEW A MAJOR INITIATIVE OF THE PAST DECADE on the Downtown Campus has been for our student body to reflect the population of metro Louisville as closely as possible. St. Francis High School has always, through its great commitment to financial aid (a commitment shared by you, our donors, for which we are so grateful) had a diverse student body in terms of socioeconomics. We also have historically drawn students from across multiple zip codes and from varying religious backgrounds. Where we were not as successful in the 1980s and 1990s was in attracting a racially/ethnically diverse student body. In the 2000s, we began working strategically to increase the school’s racial and ethnic diversity. Outreach and recruiting were key, as well as networking and support from our Board of Trustees. The 2011-12 school year well exemplifies our success in diversifying the student body. 37% of all students were minority or foreign-born. For reference, the National Association of Independent Schools average is 22%. In Jefferson County, according to the 2010 census, the population was just under 75% white and thus just over 25% racial/ethnic minority. The graduating Class of 2012 itself was wonderfully diverse, with 48% minority. Again, this would not have been possible without the generosity of you, our donors - in 2011-12, you gave over $33,000 for Talented Minority Youth scholarships and over $1,300 for the New American Scholarship fund, as well as gifts to the Annual Fund and via Imagine that helped fund scholarships generally. To see the Class of 2012 graduate was incredibly satisfying. On the personal level, it always is, as we watch these young men and women finish one stage of their lives and prepare to take the next step. In addition, with this particular class, we also saw the fruition of the work we had done to diversify the student body. But most importantly, and always the case at St. Francis regardless of how varied (or not) a class appears on its surface, the Class of 2012 was a truly diverse group of young adults: their racial/ethnic backgrounds, yes, but also their beliefs, their personalities, their talents, their ambitions. The best proof of this (as always!) is in their Graduation speeches. It is a tradition at St. Francis to allow any student who so wishes to speak at Graduation. They never disappoint. Here are a few examples:

26

said: “At this school, I met people from all over the world, people who opened my eyes to things happening elsewhere in the world. Many of these people are sitting in this room, graduating with me. Furthermore, through this school I was able to do community service at Kentucky Refugee Ministries, a local organization that resettles refugees in Louisville. This, too, helped further my

understanding of international events. I have St. Francis to thank for my interest in international affairs, something that I now believe is my true

ELLE

TONY MAXWELL

graced us with one of his wonderful poems, many of which he shared with us in Morning Meeting over the years. A few stanzas are: “I remember us, being different from our predecessors and raising/The bar for our successors. I remember them calling us “unique”/ “diverse” and a great class. I remember us taking those words/Because we already knew that. /I remember us, being there for each other, refusing not to leave/ one of ours behind. I remember us making our own trial, even when/ They called us lost./ But now!/I will remember being here and graduating with you, this day where we’re/All dressed in black because we mean business today. And today when we/ All walk across this stage to shine together.”

BASS said: “This wasn’t a real high school. At least not compared to how I had seen it in the movies … or experienced it. Before I came here, it was supposed to be a hellhole of backstabbing friends, jocks who always won, nerds who always lost, unsympathetic and ridiculously impossible teachers that would assign mountains of homework; oh, and don’t forget the disgusting cafeteria food. St. Francis isn’t just a high school though; it’s much more than that. It’s a community of extremely different people coexisting and flourishing culturally and socially in

an educational environment. At St. Francis I felt equal, despite those differences. I felt respected and even cared for by those around me. I knew I had people willing to provide the answers, the time and the effort, whenever I was ready to ask the questions. This is what I absolutely loved about St. Francis and will take with me throughout life: it is up to me. I was the author of my own learning. Honesty, integrity, determination, and dedication were expected the first day we walked through those doors. How you handled such a responsibility, the Class of 2012, was up to you as individuals.”

Incredible words from an incredible group of students, now alumni. Thank you to all our supporters for making possible the diversity the Class of 2012 shared with us–

A DIVERSITY CONTINUED IN THE ST. FRANCIS STUDENT BODY OF TODAY. 27
