Alexandra Thurstone G ’80, ’84, Head of School LETTER FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL: MERGER - YEAR ONE 2012-13 was one of the most exciting years in the history of St. Francis School, as it was our first as a merged Preschool12th grade school. The merger took effect on July 1, 2012. To say that it was a year of change would be a huge understatement. As a new school, we examined all our major defining factors. Some of the most significant accomplishments and decisions made during this year include completing a Capital Campaign Feasibility Study and kicking off the silent phase of our new unified campaign; creating a Master Campus Plan for all our campuses; determining the future locations of all our campuses (Downtown and Goshen stay put, and Preschool moves to Goshen); adopting the Wyvern as our whole school mascot and red and blue as our colors; solidifying our school identity as “The School of Thought”; deciding that we will not be changing our name from “St. Francis”; demolishing the garage next to the High School and constructing an attractive, landscaped flat lot; breaking ground on the Goshen Campus gymnasium; and establishing a Learning Resource Center on the Goshen Campus in partnership with Langsford Learning Acceleration Centers. And these are just a few of the major items!

The great news is that we really saw gains in enrollment overall in 2012-13. We opened school with 447 students, up 2% compared to last year’s opening enrollment. The enrollment news is particularly strong on the Goshen and Downtown Campuses, with Goshen starting at 235 versus 222 last year, a 6% increase, and Downtown starting at 135 versus 123 last year, which is a 9% increase. The Preschool Campus started at 77 versus 93 last year, or a 17% decrease. The fantastic news is that we saw huge transfer numbers with an incredible 29 students transferring in throughout the year, ending the year with 470 students, up 5% versus the beginning of the year. Again, the increased admissions activity continued into the summer and boded well for 2013-14. Fundraising activity also benefited from the merger. Having two major Galas for only one school and one Board was a risk, but the results were positive. The Preschool Palooza was combined with “Our Good Earth,” which moved to the Goshen Campus under a beautiful tent with a farm-totable dinner and netted $65,000, and Imagine! was held at the Kentucky Center for African American Heritage for the first time and netted over $60,000.

We couldn’t have done it without the outstanding work of our Chairs and their able committees: Denise Ragland, Andi Hibbard and Scott Gregor for “Our Good Earth,” Scott Gregor and Mary Cantrell for Imagine!. Our Annual Fund also was a great success as we added the two previous campaigns together for 2012-13 and raised $320,000. We also received over $40,000 in Talented Minority Youth Scholarship gifts. In addition, we received our second year of funding as a Confucius Classrooms Network School, which came with a second $10,000 grant that is renewable for up to three years. WHAS Crusade for Children provided $9,000 to support a Learning Specialist to work with students with learning differences. Finally, thanks go to the Parent Association Chairs on all three campuses. The Preschool Parent Association, under the leadership of Andi Hibbard and the Goshen Campus Parent Association, led by Juli Duvall, granted over $11,000 in necessary funding to the Preschool and Goshen Campuses; the Downtown Campus Parent Association, under the leadership of Sarah Harlan, provided over $9,000 in faculty/staff grants. In addition, the Parent Associations were instrumental in helping to welcome new families to our campuses, host a

number of wonderful well-attended events for our families, and spearhead appreciation lunches and holiday gifts for our faculty and staff. Thank you so much for all your hard work. 2012-13 was one for the record books at St. Francis. All of us involved in bringing our schools together knew that there would be numerous benefits, but we simply could not have imagined just how significant those benefits would be. As always, though, we are truly indebted to our many loyal supporters who have helped to create a brighter future for St. Francis School. Here’s to a prosperous and joyous 2013-14 and beyond.

This financial strength cannot be achieved separately from the successes in each classroom – Preschool through 12th grade. It is those daily successes with students that give the School a platform from which to achieve financial strength. The constant has always been, and will always be, what happens in the classrooms. LETTER FROM THE BOARD CHAIR 2012-13 has shown us that our formerly separate Schools are, in fact, very much better together. As Board Chair, my primary responsibility is to lead the Board to ensure the long-range strength of the School, and to preserve the Mission. Our viewpoint is that the actions of the Board today must serve the school well 20 years from now. It was with that viewpoint that our two Boards decided to merge our Schools, beginning with the 2012-13 school year. As we began school in August, we were confident in our success with the merger, but frankly, not one of us predicted the remarkable levels of success that we ultimately achieved throughout the year. As you can see from the pictures shown throughout this report, each financial metric is positive, from Admissions to Annual Fund to Special Events to our Capital Campaign.

CREATING AN ABUNDANT FUTURE FOR ST. FRANCIS SCHOOL planned, and the campaign for the gym had been underway the longest; therefore it became the first of all our major building projects. Existing project architect Doug Pierson, managing partner of (fer)Studios, an award-winning architectural firm from Inglewood, California, is bringing this building to fruition.

Phase 1C: Goshen Campus – Theater and Performing Arts/Main Entrance-Lobby Renovation, $1-1.5 million Fine Arts at St. Francis encompasses art, music, and drama. Currently, the Goshen Campus theatre and performing arts facilities do not meet our needs. In addition, the entrance and main lobby are not as effective as they need to be in terms of providing visitors with a welcoming entrance to the School. This renovation will increase the size of the stage/wing area, add a backstage, create a set/prop storage and build area, provide extensive sound and lighting enhancements, and provide space and functionality for indoor/outdoor performances.

The Master Plan represents a shared vision of the future of St. Francis School, one in which the spirit of the school is “extroverted” through both the buildings and landscapes on each campus. 10

2012-13 was an exciting year for St. Francis in so many ways, and one of the things on which we spent a great deal of time was planning for the future of each of our campuses. The Goshen and Downtown Campuses had existing Capital Campaigns in place, but merging gave us the opportunity to take a step back and re-examine both of these to form a new, merged Capital Campaign. This new Campaign combines the dreams, the donors, and the goals from the two prior campaigns. To lead us in this landmark Campaign for St. Francis, we found three wonderful Co-Chairs in alumni parent Nina Bonnie, alumni parent and current grandparent Dace Brown Stubbs, and current parent Ginny Frazier. We began in the summer of 2012 with a feasibility study, which demonstrated that a Campaign goal of $12-14 million was achievable over five years. By the end of the feasibility study, the newly combined Campaign had raised $3.4 million toward our goal. To help us prioritize our goals, we completed a Master Campus Plan with Lake|Flato Architects. Lake|Flato Architects, the AIA Firm of the Year in 2004, is a national leader in the design of Independent Schools as well as colleges; they also have extensive

expertise in “green” architecture. The Master Plan represents a shared vision of the future of St. Francis School, one in which the spirit of the school is “extroverted” through both the buildings and landscapes on each campus.

Phase 1A: Downtown Campus – Removal of Garage and Construction of Landscaped Flat Lot, $500,000 Timeline: Completed Summer 2013

The time had come for the garage adjacent to the Downtown Campus to come down, and in its place we constructed a flat lot with extensive landscaping. It also had the unforeseen benefit of making the School much more visible from 3rd Street. The lot serves as a placeholder for our future Multi-Purpose Center.

Phase 1B: Goshen Campus – Athletic Center, $2.4 million Timeline: Under construction, completion Summer of 2014.

Our 34-year-old gym was inadequate to accommodate our athletics programs and was in immediate need of a comprehensive renovation. In the timeline of all the planned projects, this was the longest

Phase 2: Downtown Campus: Multi-Purpose Student Life Center, $7 million The Downtown Campus has three major needs that must be addressed for the long-term success of the School. First, there are no substantial on-site athletic facilities; second, the entrance to the School is not visible to the public (one could drive by the building and not notice that a school exists there); and finally additional administrative spaces, as well as classroom spaces, are necessary as we continue to experience enrollment growth. Lake:Flato Architects have designed a stunning building to meet these needs and also facilitate establishing a “one school” feel by mimicking the amphitheatre feel from the Goshen Campus in the seating for the gymnasium.

Throughout the Campaign: Scholarship Endowment Focusing on the people who make our school what it is, $2 million Our commitment to financial aid and scholarships is unlike any other, not only among local Independent Schools, but nationally as well. In order to continue this, we must build our endowment.

DOWNTOWN CAMPUS YEAR-IN-REVIEW

by Suzanne Gorman Head of Downtown Campus

2012-13 was a year of amazing growth and change for the School as a whole in our first merged year. On the Downtown Campus, we graduated a class of 38 who matriculated at a diverse group of colleges, including Harvard, Columbia, Mt. Holyoke, University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School, Hanover, Michigan State, Oberlin, Colorado College, Centre, Rhode Island School of Design, Middlebury, American, Earlham and more. The class earned $4.2 million in scholarship dollars. Five graduates went on to compete in athletics at the collegiate level. The class included two National Merit Finalists and our first-ever Gates Millennium Scholar. St. Francis students completed some 2,000 hours of service through our school program in which we do six half-days of service at sites such as the Falls of the Ohio, Planned Parenthood, Kentucky Science Center, Gilda’s Club, Center for Women and Families, Christian Care Communities, Olmstead Parks, and our Preschool and Goshen Campuses. Students participated in many academic competitions, including Science Olympiad, Chess, Kentucky Youth Assembly, Kentucky United Nations Assembly, Math League, Governor’s Cup, Quick Recall and the World Language Festival. The Governor’s Cup team

12

finished second in the district tournament and second in the regional tournament, sending four students on to the state competition. The Math League team finished first in the district and took individual first places in 12th, 10th, and 9th grades, among other honors. We celebrated one of our 9th graders reigning as the Kentucky High School Chess Champion. We inaugurated a formal music program, under the direction of Goshen music teacher Bob Bertke, who created our first instrumental band. Two plays were produced: Antigone Now and a spring “Showcase of Plays” written by our students specifically for spaces in the school building. And two of our students received recognition as finalists (top 20) and two others as semi-finalists from among 400 plays submitted to Actors Theatre’s New Voices competition for young playwrights. The annual Student Art Show and Senior Project Showcase were magnificent, as usual. Athletic teams competed with heart and Wyvern pride; highlights included individual state tournament appearances in track and tennis.

GOSHEN CAMPUS YEAR-IN-REVIEW

by Reed Gabhart Head of Goshen Campus

So what were the “highlights” on the Goshen Campus in 2012-13? Let’s see, we merged with St. Francis High School (Downtown Campus) prior to the start of the year, so we became the “creamy sandwich cookie filling” of a delicious and Progressive Independent school serving students from ages 2 to 12th grade! After spirited debate, we learned our wings had morphed from a raptor’s to a dragon’s, as we officially became Wyverns! (And red and blue ones instead of blue and white to boot!) As is typical, our students, faculty, parents, and the whole community embraced and celebrated these small changes – and we had a remarkable year! In many ways, day-to-day life didn’t change appreciably on the Goshen Campus. We still laughed and shared at Morning Meetings, enjoyed our same seven periods a day and wonderful lunches, and fostered the always- warm relationship between teachers and students. Our athletes soared, kicked, defended, ran, threw, and learned life lessons. Our artists drew, painted, sculpted, sang, composed, acted, improvised and performed. All of our students, K - 8, engaged in meaningful service learning, touching others and then being touched in return in far greater ways.

As ever, the academics are at the heart of the High School. From AP Chemistry to Creative Writing, from Algebra II to Roots of Terrorism, from Chinese to Vertebrate Zoology, students read, discussed, wrote, answered, presented, laughed, argued, experimented, researched, questioned, and - always - thought!

But we also became a part of a larger, united St. Francis! As such, we found many ways to connect. Goshen 3rd and 4th graders went to our Downtown Campus and brought the Muppet Revue performance with them, to the absolute delight of the adoring High School crowd. High School students came to the Goshen Campus and graced our athletic fields, performed their fall play in our Main Amp, and did regular community service. And the coup de grace was our first-ever (but not last!) “Three Campus Field Day” in May when our Preschoolers, Goshen kids, and Downtown students came together here to don the same T-shirts and play “Duck-Duck-Goose” and “Simon Says” in a celebration of all things Wyvern! It was a truly special day and amazing culmination of our newfound interconnectedness. The 2013-14 school-year has its work cut out for it! 13

PRESCHOOL: PROGRESS TOWARD THE FUTURE

by Renee Hennessy Preschool Director

2012-13 was the year of possibilities! After a year of research by our Ad Hoc Committee on the Board of Trustees, the decision was made to move our Preschool Program to the Goshen Campus. Preschoolers at the Goshen Campus would be able to experience new opportunities, including nature walks on the 64-acre campus, hot lunches from the excellent chef and food service, exercise in the new gymnasium, access to specialists in world language and art, and the ability to use the school library, to name a few. In addition, we will finally be able to build our natural playground that will be unlike any playground in Oldham and Jefferson Counties, or the region, for that matter. In addition, our Preschool teachers will have an opportunity to collaborate with the Learning Resource Center’s speech pathologist and occupational therapists, as well as our Kindergarten teachers. And, of course, the hallmarks of the Preschool program – music and movement classes, large and small group project work, outdoor education, individual attention, experienced staff – will continue at the Goshen Campus. 14

ALUMNUS OF THE YEAR by Ginny Tyler, Alumni Director Every year we have the distinct pleasure of honoring one of our St. Francis School graduates. We are truly fortunate to have an amazing pool of Wyverns to choose from who support the school and our Mission and personify the qualities of a St. Francis student years after they leave our halls. We would like to acknowledge George Parker from the Class of 1995 as the 2012-13 Alumnus of the Year. Although George only attended St. Francis for his senior year, he has remained the most engaged member of his class, helping to reform and reorganize the Alumni Committee, attending numerous meetings for PR and marketing of the School, offering services and expertise for our website (including professionally scanning hundreds of yearbook pages for every year the High School has been open) and hosting alumni events around town and in his own home. We are honored to have George as a part of our community and look forward to working with him in the coming years.

ALUMNI DONORS Below is a list of all our alumni donors to the Annual Fund. Donors are listed in order of high school graduation year (regardless of whether they graduated from St. Francis High School). SFHS graduation is indicated with ’year and Goshen graduation from 8th grade is indicated with G’year. Example A: John Doe G’78, ’82 graduated from our Goshen 8th grade in 1978 and continued to graduate from the High School in 1982

Example C: John Doe ’82 did not graduate from Goshen 8th grade, but did graduate from High School in 1982.

The following gifts were made to St. Francis in memory of Galen. Galen was the father of four St. Francis alums, both Goshen and High School: Joanna G’77 ‘81; Caroline G’79 ‘83; Katie G’81 ‘85; and Galen III G’84 ‘88, and served as a Trustee for the School. The donors’ generosity and support are a testament to how well loved he was and how much Galen loved and supported St. Francis. The gifts will celebrate Galen’s spirit and his love for St. Francis always, and the way he touched the hearts of the faculty, staff, and Trustees at the School. Galen was a true “St. Francis person.” Remembering Galen’s legacy in this way is a fitting tribute to his enthusiasm for our mission, and we are truly honored to be the beneficiaries of such kindness. During this first year of the merger, we also merged the Goshen and High School databases, which wreaked a bit of havoc with our constituent information. Please accept our apologies if we made an error. If we have listed something incorrectly, including your donor level, your alumni status, or anything else, please contact Bobby Steurer at 502-736-1042 or BSteurer@StFrancisSchool.org or send us a note in the postage-paid envelope inside this Annual Report, and we will get it corrected for the future. As it turns out, merging schools is easier than merging databases!

St. Francis School cultivates a joyful, compassionate, intellectual community that celebrates individuality and inspires independent thinking for life.
