1 YEAR, 2013-2014 @MUNICH & MILANO INDIVIDUAL WORK COLLABORATE WITH INNOVATIVE FACTORY PLANNING TEAM IN SIEMENS CT RESEARCH & SERVICE DESIGN

WORK 1> MASTER THESIS IN SIEMENS APPLY DESIGN THINKING INTO AN ENGINEERING ACTIVITY THIS THESIS IS THE RESULT OF MY ONE-YEAR RESEARCH IN SIEMENS CORPORATE TECHNOLOGY , ABOUT SERVICE EXPERIENCE IN “GREEN FACTORY PLANNING”, AS WELL AS XING WANG’S MASTER GRADUATION THESIS OF “PRODUCT SERVICE SYSTEM DESIGN ” PROGRAM IN POLITECNICO DI MILANO. IN THIS STUDY, FACTORY PLANNING IS EXAMINED FROM DESIGN PERSPECTIVE. AS A CONSULTING SERVICE, SERVICE DESIGN AND INTERACTION DESIGN ARE APPLIED TO IMPROVE ITS EXPERIENCE. MAJOR CHALLENGES ARE DISCOVERED AND ANALYSED. A BUNCH OF SOLUTIONS TO FILL THE EXPERIENCE GAPS ARE PROPOSED, IN THE FORM OF FUTURE SCENARIOS, STRATEGIES, AND PRO/CON ANALYSIS. THIS STUDY WAS MAINLY CARRIED OUT IN SIEMENS MUNICH, GERMANY, SPONSORING BY SIEMENS CT PPC, FROM APRIL 2013. SINCE THIS PROJECT IS CONFIDENTIAL, ONLY THE PUBLISHED CONTENT CAN BE SHOWN IN THIS PORTFOLIO.

For the new consulting service Green Factory Planning in Siemens, I improved its service experience, by facilitating Collaboration, raising Green Awareness, smoothing Communication and enhancing Usability. The existing Factory Planning service has been analysed thoroughly with Human-centred principle to discover its challenges and opportunities. After definining the Design Brief, some brainstorming sessions were carried out to inspire fresh ideas. New service vision and mission were proposed, as well as stakeholder strategy and business model. Afterwards, three scenarios were created to show how the gamification, data-driven community and tangible user interface make big differences in targetsetting, data gathering and Green-related support of Green Factory Planning. Ultimately, I associated these three scenarios together as an entire service, and demonstrated how the new solutions smooth the service experience and greatly change the future factory planners’ work-style. The graduation jury gave this thesis a full mark (8/8). SIEMENS CORPORATE TECHNOLOGY

6 MONTHS, 2014 @MUNICH INTERNSHIP DESIGNAFFAIRS GMBH DESIGN & RESEARCH

WORK 2> INTERNSHIP IN DESIGNAFFAIRS HOW TOP DESIGN AGENCY WORKS AS A COMPULSORY PRACTICE IN THE STUDY PLAN, A HALF-YEAR INTERNSHIP WAS CONDUCTED IN DESIGNAFFAIRS GMBH IN MUNICH, GERMANY. I WORKED IN THE DIVISION OF MATERIAL TECHNOLOGIES, WHICH IS RESPONSIBLE TO FIND CREATIVE MATERIAL SOLUTIONS FOR INDUSTRIAL DESIGN PRODUCTS. BESIDES THAT, I ALSO HAD SOME CROSS-DEPARTMENT PROJECTS, SUCH AS INDUSTRIAL DESIGN, USER INTERFACE DESIGN, ETC. THERE WERE A LOT OF LESSONS I LEARNT DURING THE INTERNSHIP AND IT WAS ONE OF THE MOST VALUABLE EXPERIENCES IN MY LIFE. LOTS OF THANKS ARE DUE TO MY SUPERVISOR, EFRAT FRIEDLAND, FOR HER CONTINUING SUPERVISING FROM THE FIRST DAY OF THE INTERNSHIP TO THE END. I WOULD LIKE TO ACKNOWLEDGE ALL THE SUPPORTS FROM ALL THE LOVELY COLLEAGUES IN DESIGNAFFAIRS. I CONSIDER IT AN HONOUR TO WORK WITH THEM.

In 2014, I had a half-year internship in designaffairs GmbH, an design consultancy firm for product and brand development located in Munich, Germany. I worked in the division of Material Technologies, which is responsible to find creative material solutions for industrial design products. Beside the daily routines (Materialaffairs and Material Library management, material cards development, and participation in supplier‘s meetings), I had been assigned to work on six different projects. The table on the right indicates the basic information of these involved projects. I had a wide range of responsibilities in these project team, including brainstorming & ideation, material research, competitor analysis, use case development, wireframing of UI, storytelling, video making, prototyping, etc. The detailed internship report can be download with the link below. 4 MONTHS, 2013 @ MILAN GROUP WORK WITH SILVIA BALLERINI, FELIPE IGLESIAS, YANTI LI, FEDERICA VILLA SERVICE DESIGN STILL IN PROCESSING...

03> MADEINDERGANO HOW TO PRESERVE LOCAL HANDICRAFT HERITAGE OUR GROUP’S TOPIC OF THE FINAL DESIGN STUDIO IS “SHOPPING IN DERGANO”, DIFFERENT FROM OTHER GROUPS WHICH FORCES ON “WALKING”, “PLAYING”, ETC. THE PROJECT LASTED 4 MONTHS, FROM OCTOBER 2012 TO JANUARY 2013, AND WE FOLLOW THE STRUCTURE FROM FIELD AND DESK RESEARCH, TO SCENARIO BUILDING, CONCEPT GENERATION, BUSINESS MODELLING, UNTIL WE GET THE FINAL VERSION OF SERVICE. WE LEARNT A LOT IN THIS COURSE, ESPECIALLY THE PART TO CONNECT DESIGN WITH BUSINESS. WE TRIED TO STRUCTURE A SERVICE INTO A FEASIBLE AND VIABLE SHAPE BY SOME TOOLS, LIKE BUSINESS MODEL CANVAS, BUSINESS PLAN, WHICH IS VERY HELPFUL FOR GLOBAL THINKING ABOUT A SERVICE.

MadeInDergano is a shopping-related service about local handicraft heritage: it allows people to experience customization of objects created together with craftsmen of Dergano Area in Milano, Italy. The aim of the project is to create awareness about Dergano’s craftmen, add value to their production and provide a solid logistic system for the users and the stakeholders: the expertise of the craftmen is re-thinked in the growing perspective of the Do It Yourself, involving the user in the creative process. 12 | XINGDESIGN.IT | MADEINDERGANO | INTRODUCTION

Field Research: Dergano Is A District Full Of Contradictions Dergano is a district in the north of Milan full of contradictions: there are old fashioned activities and lifestyles which are in contrast with the growing reality of ethnic shops and business districts.

Handcraft Identity Strong relationship with the area, traditional components, belonging with Dergano, want to stay there and reject integration with new neighbours, as the immigrants. In this point, is interesting that original services and business are starting to change for other that are not connected with the identity of the neighbourhood.

Dergano

Social Decay and Migration Neighbours are older, between 50 to 80 years or more. Oldest neighbours are starting to die and its families starting to put their houses on sale or renting. Traditional families migration. Immigrants are start to filling the demographic pool. Feeling of decadence but the area is full of nice buildings an well serviced. Urban facilities in regular conditions.

City Pressure Near neighbourhoods in renovation as Maciachini (business/services), Isola (culture/ entertainment) and Bovisa (education/culture) are starting to pushing Dergano. Nowadays the area is quite isolated, keeping its own urban distribution itself not allowing integration with Milan or just existing in the boundaries with other neighbourhoods. Why It Needs Change - Suburbs are grey and nothing is happening here - Many economic activities are failing - Tradition is nearly dead, there’s need for young energies

To Save The Handcraft Tradition In Dergano Dergano has a strong craftsmanship tradition: beautiful products with wood, ceramics, paper and textile are created every day in the workshops of the neighbourhood. The aim of the project is to create awareness about Dergano’s craftsmen, add value to their production and provide a solid logistic system for the users and the stakeholders: the expertise of the craftsmen is re-thinked in the growing perspective of the Do It Yourself, involving the user in the creative process.

Stakeholder & System Map MadeInDergano is a shopping-related service for customers who want to participate in creating unique and handmade products. Dergano’s craftmen are the stakeholders of the service: through the online platform, the user will be able to customize and buy online products that are made in the craftsmen workshops and that will be delivered to the user’s place.

16 | XINGDESIGN.IT | MADEINDERGANO | FIELD RESEARCH

The service works thanks to a web platform and there are three different way of starting the “customization process”: choose from the catalogue, customize a product or create a new one.

UFF, I CAN’T FIND A GIFT FOR FEDERICA...

Silvia is a student in POLIMI. She is looking for a birthday gift for her best friend Federica. But she can’t find a suitable gift in the market to show how important Federica is in her heart.

THE PRODUCTION WILL START SOON.

After chosing the style of the gift box and having filled the form with Federica’s address, Silvia uses credit card to pay the bill. A confirmation letter is sent to Silvia’s mailbox.

IT COULD BE A GOOD IDEA FOR A CREATIVE PRESENT!

Silvia searches customized products on the internet and MadeInDergano catches her eyes. It is a website where it is possible to order products and customize the shape, size, pattern and color online.

THIS IS EXACTLY FEDERICA’S TASTE, PERFECT!

PENGUIN WILL BE GREAT. FEDERICA LOVES THEM!

Silvia chooses a wooden penguin on the website because she knows Federica is crazy about this funny animal from the South Pole.

Hehe, IT WAS BORN JUST FOR YOU!

I AM A SPECIALIZED CARPENTER

The craftsman in Dergano receives the request and completes the penguin according to Silvia’s preferences. The production takes 1 day.

On the customization page, it is easy to change the design of the product. Finally a cute penguin with magenta skin, white stomach and electric blue dots comes out. Silvia believes Federica will like it.

The Penguin is finally sent to the Federica’s house by the express company TNT on the 4th day after Silvia has ordered online.

I REALLY LIKE THE PENGUIN. WHERE DID YOU BUY IT?

Federica is so happy to receive that penguin that matches her taste and asks Silvia where did she buy it. Silvia answers with a mysterious smile: “It was born just for you.”

The Logistic And Delivery System As in most online purchasing websites, the user can have the possibility to have his/ her product delivered home. To achieve this, there will be a partnership with a logistic company for affordable delivery of the product in the city of Milan and even in Northern Italy. It is also given the possibility to go directly to the craftshop to pick up the product, avoiding any delivery expense (plus having the chance to get to know the craftsman). 18 | XINGDESIGN.IT | MADEINDERGANO | FIELD RESEARCH

MadeInDergano Website Is The Most Important Touchpoint

Customization On The Website Is As Much Guided As Possible

The users can first get in touch with the craftsmen’s knowledge; have fun customizing their products through an online tool, then purchase them at affordable price.

In order not to confuse the user and at the same time not to ask too much from the craftsmen (they cannot spend the whole day on working for the service). This is why the user can only customize the graphic design (four moods- geometric, nature, classical and pop declinable in different patterns), the size, the finishing (e.g. shiny or matte), texture and 3d details (like the signature of the craftsmen on the product, or the quality of the handle of a cup).

In the web platform the user can create his/her own profile, see the status order (in case they ordered something) in their personal page and check the inbox (useful tool for communicating directly to the service providers and the craftsmen). The craftsmen will have a personal profile as well, where they can show their calendar and describe their work.

FROM JUNE, I DECIDE TO MAKE A DEVICE FOR MUSIC WITH TWO FRIENDS BY OURSELVES FOR THE YOUNG PEOPLE WHO HAVE RELATIVELY HIGH LEVEL OF EDUCATION AND ECONOMIC CONDITION. THEIR AGES RANGE FROM 18 TO 30 YEARS OLD. THEY HAVE A KEEN APPRECIATION OF GOOD DESIGN AND LIKE BUY SOMETHING INTERESTING. THE PROJECT IS QUITE A BIG CHALLENGE FOR US, BECAUSE WE WENT THROUGH ALL THE STEPS OF A PRODUCT INNOVATION: FROM MARKET AND USER RESEARCH, BRAINSTORM, CONCEPT FORMING, PRODUCT AND SERVICE DESIGN, PROTOTYPING WITH ARDUINO AND CNC, COMMUNICATION DESIGN, PROMOTION. THE PROJECT IS STILL IN PROCESS ON THE STEP OF PROMOTION.

MoodUp is an indoor music box which can change the moods of the musics by detecting the position of the box. The user can play the music rely on their activities simply by adjusting the orientation. It is a big change for music listening. Music can follow your activities and influence your mood rather than being simply classified by genres or bands. Let’s change from Music For Listening to Music For Living.

26 | XINGDESIGN.IT | MOODUP | INTRODUCTION

Sync The Music Wireless Simply put the MoodUp close to your computer, the device will connect to the computer and sync your music to Internal memory after you press the Sync Button. Then MoodUp can play the music offline.

HOW IT WORKS | MOODUP | XINGDESIGN.IT | 27

1. Take The Magnet Chip Of “Shower 2. Mark Surface With Magnet Chip

3. Put The Wanted Mood Upward

4. Enjoy Your Shower With The Music

The MoodUp has a lot of magnet chip for you to mark the faces to your activity. The users are also allowed to make their own chips with customized pattern. In this case, the user is going to have shower.

When you are going to shower, just rotate MoodUp to the position that the surface with shower are on the top. It will play the music for shower to you.

The music for your shower start to play. You can adjust the volume and also skip to the next track with the orange volume knob and skip button.

Stick the chip with the graphic of shower on a free surface. There are 5 faces are available for the user to stick. The numbers from 1 to 5 on the surfaces help the users to distinguish.

The Logo Of MoodUp The Design of the logo is inspired by the rotatable device. We make a colourful frame for every letter, with the P rotated.

The final connected circuitry at a glance / circuit diagram of the design

We are also a multi-disciplinary team, Hu Junliang mainly do programming work, because his expertise is software engineering.

Use Arduino For Prototyping

Test, Test, And Test

Arduino is our choice to prototypes, in order to make it functional. Using Arduino for us it is a challenge, indeed. We bought the MP3 shield, acceleration inductor, audio amplifier circuit from a radio, transformer, and a lot of thing needed, then coded and connected together in the right way. Thank to the help of Physical Computing Lab in Politecnico di Milano.

Connecting digital circuits and coding for us is a new field, full of challenges. From selection and procurement of electronic components, circuit design, the breadboard circuit test, to welding, and the coding, on all the way we encountered a lot of bugs. Finding and solving these problems is full of hardships. need to keep trying, but the feeling of the moment to solve the problem is very fascinating.

30 | XINGDESIGN.IT | MOODUP | PROTOTYPING

About Assembly The shape of our MoodUp is a rhombic dodecahedron, whose each face is diamondshaped. We selected bent molding technology on steel plate to form the product. Steel plate are punched, that allows music to sound from the inside. The bottom of MoodUp is a plastic plate, can be detached from the steel plate. We try make internal circuit smaller, but due to the size of Arduino, our prototype is larger than our design. The distance between the two opposing surfaces in our design is 80cm, but the prototype is 12mm.

PROTOTYPING | MOODUP | XINGDESIGN.IT | 31

Digital Modelling, CNC, Painting And Assembly Because of the cost and feasibility of steel plate bending prototyping, we prototyped with plastic and CNC technology. The sheet metal module in UG NX is our right choice for digital modelling. Then we found a model company in Hangzhou. The CNC machine made the physical model based on the digital model. Making so many porous is indeed a big project. With the help of the assembly worker, we successfully put the boards into the rhombic dodecahedron.

3 MONTHS, 2011 @NINGBO INDIVIDUAL WORK PRODUCT DESIGN, DESIGN STRATEGY

05> GRADUATION DESIGN IN RUYI AN EXPERIENCE IN REAL MANUFACTURING UNLIKE MOST DESIGN SCHOOLS, THE GRADUATION PROJECT OF SCHOOL OF DESIGN HNU MUST BE REAL IN A REAL COMPANY. MANY STUDENTS COMPLETE THE PROJECT IN DESIGN COMPANIES OR THE RESEARCH INSTITUTES, I WAS VERY LUCKY TO DO MY PROJECT IN A MANUFACTURING COMPANY, NINGBO RUYI JOINT STOCK CO.,LTD, FOR MORE THAN TWO MONTHS IN THE RECOMMENDATION OF MY TUTOR. I CAN NOT ONLY GET REQUIREMENTS OF THE CHAIRMAN AND OTHER SENIOR DIRECTLY, BUT ALSO COMMUNICATE WITH WORKERS, WHILE THE ENGINEERS OF TECHNICAL DEPARTMENT WERE VERY WILLING TO HELP ME SOLVE THE PROBLEM OF FEASIBILITY AND COST. THESE ADVANTAGES MADE ME UNDERSTAND MORE DEEPLY ABOUT STACKER AND ITS USERS, I ALSO EXPLORED THE POSSIBILITY OF SHAPE, AS WELL AS ITS ERGONOMICS, CULTURE, BUSINESS, PSYCHOLOGY AND OTHER MULTI-LEVEL INTERPRETATION OF THE PRODUCT.

I had three tasks in Ningbo Ruyi company: The first part is to unify the identification of the existing Electric Pallet Stackers and Trucks, including analysis, finding solution, coordination with other departments and test spray on prototypes. The second part is the product Base Color Selection and Planning. With the help of the manager of the Painting Workshop and engineers, I made a unified color system, with the methods of research, color image scale, color psychology, etc. The most important task is the design of the stacker CDDK15, including product design and prototyping. I experienced the entire product design process from investigation and analysis, positioning, sketches, 3D digital models, renderings and CNC modeling. ZHUANGSHI

34 | XINGDESIGN.IT | GRADUATION DESIGN IN RUYI | INTRODUCTION

Existing Design

Design Task: A Stacker with Internal Engineering Part Had Been Developed

The Existing Design has a Bad Design

CDDK15 is a new products which is developing by the Technology Department of Ruyi company. It is an electric pallet stackers with pedal, that allows you to efficiently store and distribute goods and packages, and its maximum loading capacity is 15 tons. It is suitable for operating within a narrow channel, so it is a ideal tool used in warehouse, supermarket, shop to load and unload palletized cargo.

Because the existing is made by engineers without any designer involved in, Its performance is perfect, but the shape and interaction was not considered carefully. Its details was primitive, with a lot of meaningless redundant shape, and assembly was a little bit complicated.

The internal engineering part had almostly been developed. The original design was done by mechanical engineers. The company wanted to redesign it on the basis of the existing structure, for the shape and color. The final product should have a beautiful design with Xilin characteristics, easy to assembly and maintenance, as well as ensuring its functional performance.

My challenge is to understand the engineering part of the stacker, and re-design it with design perspective, but not lose the performance,

APPLICATION | GRADUATION DESIGN IN RUYI | XINGDESIGN.IT | 35

Study Of The Structure With The Help Of Engineers As the first step of Creativity & Sketching phase, I studied engineering structures of CDDK15. The engineers of Technical Department told me what parts cannot be changed, and what part is changeable, the boundary of the change, as well as the change’s effects of appearance and interaction. Thus, I can understand some knowledge of feasibility in this design project, and let me have a realistic approach, rather than the endless unrestrained imagination. the parts marked yellow or red in the picture 2/3/4 can be changed, as well as all the cover of the mainframe. 36 | XINGDESIGN.IT | GRADUATION DESIGN IN RUYI | CREATIVITY AND SKETCHING

Core Concept Of Design: Concave Surface Can Give User Sense Of Driving Based on ergonomic and material technology, combined with the characteristics of Ruyi Company, I gave inclusive, peaceful feelings by concave surface and relative arc, and it seems closer to the people, at the same time make it more professional and modern. it reflected the principle that Form Follows Function.

CREATIVITY AND SKETCHING | GRADUATION DESIGN IN RUYI | XINGDESIGN.IT | 37

Assembly Optimised: Only Need To Remove One Part To Maintain The Internal Parts Because the Stacker often needs to open the cover to carry out the necessary maintenance of the fuel tank of hydraulic pressure, battery and circuit, so it is necessary to have a simple assembly. The original design needs to disassemble the fence, handle and top panel to open the cover, the optimised structure just need to unscrew a few screws which is much more simple.

Takes The Advantage Of Pedestrian And Ridable Stacker The stacker combined the flexibility of pedestrian stacker and the speed of the ridable stacker. No matter it is long-distance, short distance or on a slope transportation, or put goods into corresponding shelf in narrow alleyways, CDDK15 can be perfectly competent.

UG Virtual Human Body Test There is a function in UG NX used to simulate the interaction relation between the product and human body to ensure the size is correct. Although i don’t need to change the dimensions of the stacker because the engineering parts is fixed in this case, but I use the software tool to guarantee everything is correct, and also for showing the way to operate the machine. I choose a man which is 1.8 m tall and 78 Kg weight as my model.

IN PARTICULAR, THE STUDIO CHALLENGES AND RETHINKS THE WAY WE DO FOOD SHOPPING: WE CREATED NEW SERVICES PROPOSING ALTERNATIVE AND MORE SUSTAINABLE WAYS OF DISTRIBUTING, SUPPLYING AND PURCHASING FOOD BASED ON COLLABORATION, WITH THE AIM OF PRODUCING SOLUTIONS THAT CAN TRIGGER NEW WAYS TO PROVIDE THE CITY WITH LOCAL FOOD. WE WORKED WITHIN THE GEOGRAPHICAL AREA OF MILAN, ZONA 4 WHICH IS LOCATED IN THE SOUTH-EASTERN SIDE OF THE CITY.

Jamsession is a service for collaborative jam making between the citizens of Zona 4 of Milan and the cultural associations of the area. The raw materials are brought to a “kitchen laboratory in Spazio Tertulliano by the local farmer, and then produce into delicious jam or other preserved food by the citizens, helping by the trained staffs. In exchange, the citizens are given a part of the conserve or enjoy a discount. Thus, it is a service for people to learn traditional food conservation techniques, get in touch with the local producers, meet new people and of course get an organic local product for free! The design project contained a co-design session to verify and discuss the idea resulted from the concept generation session with local actors and expert, as well as to re-define them according to the co-design feedback. Co-design in Cascina Cuccagna, 14th JUNE

The Key Indicators In Co-Design

We prepared the tools for the co-design session, since many people from the neighbourhood will be asked to participate and help us better defining the service. The questionnaire is a quick way to understand the users’ habits regarding preserved food. The interest board helped us clusterize the categories of users: students, retired and kids asked to to stick a symbol on the aspects of service that they find more captivating. The interactive storyboard was the funniest way to interact with people. The environment of play made people say or do things that they wouldn’t have done otherwise.

The Function Of The Video

Questions In The Video (Italian/English)

Video is intended as tool that enacts the service, using theatre and roleplaying techniques, where characters and situations are simulated, and graphic elements (texts, schemes, icons, drawings...) help to explain what happens and to ask for precise feedbacks.

_Cosa succederebbe se si potessero coinvolgere più attivamente i cittadini? What if the service will involve the citizens in active way?

The aim of this movie is not to present a perfect story, but to offer options and alternatives instead. Alternatives or critical points that, in a continuous co-design process, can be potentially shared with the stakeholders via Internet. The video is divided into three parts. it starts from three questions: tired of jam in the supermarket? Interested in the local food? Want to learn some traditoinal techniques of jamming? This part shows the reason why Jamsession should be existed. After this, it is the process how the service works. The third part which typing styling texts is the questions ask the audiences for co-design. In order to be understood by the local people from zone 4 of Milano, Italy, the video is all in Italian.

_E se il servizio collaborasse con i bambini delle scuole? What if the service could collaborate with children in schools? -Cosa proporre nei periodi privi di produzione stagionale? What the service can provide in the periods without seasonal products? -Cosa succederebbe se il progetto prevedesse anche corsi di cucina? What if the project could provide “cuisine courses” for pay? -Quale contributo daresti al progetto? What will be your contribute to the service? -Regaleresti dei corsi di cucina ai tuoi amici? Would you like to give a coupon for the “cuisine lesson” as a gift? -Sarebbe una bella idea preparare conserve da regalare sotto le feste? Divided Discussions Of Sub-teams

Help Each Other Across Sub-teams

A Coordinator Managing Social Network

Group Split And Roles Definition The “Com,Ma Team” was divided since the very beginning in sub-teams with specific tasks. Knowledge of what the sub-teams were doing during every day of the course has been shared with the rest of the team daily, in order to be coordinated and constantly updated on what we were doing. The sub-teams were organized as follows: EVENT TEAM : Xing, Paolo COORDINATOR : Federico VIDEO & PHOTO : Pedro, Tiago “SPAM” TEAM : Adriano, Deborah, Valentina, JiaXuan, Yanti With “Event Team” we defined a specific team which duty was mainly to generate a concept for the guerrilla advertising action on Day3. After completing this task, Event Team merged into the Spam Team.

With “Video & Photo” we selected the most skilled team members who could take care of the photoshooting and video recording during all phases of the workshop as top priority of their tasks. With “Spam Team” we organized a group of people which main duty was to diffuse and communicate the event, to increase awareness outside and inside of the campus of what the course output would have been. Managing the existing communication and graphics or create new ones has been an important part of their jobs aswell, both for advertising or event materials. The definition above used many times the word “manily / main” to underline that the group has always worked as a whole, and each group member have helped other subteams whenever they were in need of a helping hand.

With “Coordinator” we defined a role of a main supervisor of our teamwork and manager of the coordination of the other groups. The coordinator has been the main person in charge of the management of the social channels. MANAGEMENT | C’E SPAZIO PER TUTTI | XINGDESIGN.IT | 67

Totems In The Local Street Market To Promote Our Event The Event Team had an own brainstorm session, which was discussed with the rest of the Com,Ma team, and eventually came out with a clever, impactful solution for the market advertising activity: an interactive installation and stand, which we called “totem”, that served both the purpose of advertising and the purpose of involving people, making them participate. The participation of people just required them to post their feedbacks and suggestion on the totems, completing the sentence “C’è Spazio Per ___” on an A6 blank sheet of paper. Meanwhile, people have been briefed and

informed with targetized information about the overall event and specific activities. All the groups participated to the market event, and came back satisfied and happy. Photogallery: http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.451541498220981.97831.4 40214452687019&type=3

Totems Divides The People Stream And Leaving Free Spaces people stream

On that day, the market stands made by vans will be placed in the two sides of the road, leaving a narrow path which is approximately 5 meters wide. There are three main entrances of the market: the two ends of Via Massara and the end of Via Francesco. The market started from 7 am and almost end at 2 pm. The Event Team brainstormed for the promotion event in the market at Via Massara de Capitani and Via Francesco on Wednesday. We proposed to build 3 or 4 “Spazio” in the middle of the path that is not disturbed by the stream of people. The triangular prisms divide the people stream, leaving a empty space in the street. (like the topic finding/ creating the hidden space).

08> FREESCUE MONORAIL REFORM GUARDRAILS OF HIGHWAY INTO RAILS FOR RESCUE FREESCUE MONORAIL WON THE GOLD PRIZE OF LOTUS PRIZE 2010. THE ENTRY WAS RECOGNIZED AS THE BEST OF BEST AMONG THE JURYS. THE THEME OF THE CATEGORY IS “TRANSPORTATION AND MACHINERY EQUIPMENT DESIGN “. MANY MEDIA INCLUDING HUNAN TV STATION REPORTED OUR DESIGN IN THE PRIME TIME AND CAUSE CERTAIN INFLUENCE IN SOCIETY.

In this design, highway guardrails are transformed into rails, then a kind of small rescue vehicle can run on it and it will arrive at the accident spot as soon as possible. This rescue system makes highway exits work as the survice base. Rescue teams (high-speed traffic policemen and doctors) use this system to guarantee the most timely rescue and emergency treatment.

Emergency Lane Is Certain To Be Occupied When Accident

A Path That Cannot Occupied By The Normal Traffic

There are three general lanes and an emergency parking strip (lay-by) in a high way. But in China, especially on most busy highways, it is often occupied by other vehicles. If a traffic accident happened, many cars might rush into the emergency lane, then rescue vehicles could not arrive in time and delay the timing of rescue.

When we thought about the proper way to eliminate this situation of emergency lane abuse, an idea came to us: there must be a specific channel for the emergency vehicle, that is impossible for other normal vehicle to use by logic. And also it should be cheap and easy to be installed in the existing highway. According to these, reforming the guardrail into a special lane is the best solution.

1 MONTH, 2010 @CHANGSHA INDIVIDUAL WORK PRODUCT DESIGN

09> MONEY REDBULL SAVING POT MADE BY RED PORCELAIN IN THE CONTEXT OF CHINA AS A MATERIAL-CENTERED DESIGN PROJECTS, IT SHOULD START FROM THE RED PORCELAIN ITSELF WITH THE PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS, PRODUCTION TECHNOLOGY AND SEMANTIC SOCIOLOGY TO FIND A NEW POINT (SOCIAL NEEDS AND SHAPE), SHOWING A NEW SIDE OF THE RED PORCELAIN. THE TECHNOLOGY OF RED PORCELAIN WAS DEVELOPED IN 1990’S. SO IT IS A NEW MATERIAL. BUT IT IS GENERALLY USED FOR WEDDING, CELEBRATION AND OTHER TRADITIONAL OCCASIONS. IN THIS PROJECT, I TRIED TO FIND A NEW OPPORTUNITY OF THIS MATERIAL FOR THE COMPANY OF CHINA RED PORCELAIN.

In China’s stock market, there is a big difference from the world in the colors which indicate the rise and fall of stocks: Green means fall, red means rise. “Money Redbull” is a red porcelain bullshaped saving pot for Chinese normal investors as the target users. It differs from the red decorative porcelain bulls which have already on sale in the market, and is a more modern styling and practical utensil found in family environment. Red porcelain, bull market and saving pot are combined into a one saving pot perfectly. An auspicious product design!

10> BEATLES POSTER SIMPLE & ELEGANT YELLOW SUBARINE IN THE TYPOGRAPHY CLASS, I DESIGNED THIS POSTER ABOUT THE LEGENDARY ROCK BAND. THE TEACHER ASKED US TO LISTEN TO THE ALBUM “YELLOW SUBMARINE” AND WATCH THE SAME-NAME MUSIC MOVIE. AFTER THAT, WE SHOULD MAKE A POSTER TO DESCRIBE (OR EXPLAIN) THEM AND THE EXPERIENCE THEY GIVE YOU. ALMOST ALL MY CLASSMATES MAKE A COLORFUL POSTER, BUT I JUST WANT TO EXPLAIN “YELLOW SUBMARINE” IN A ANOTHER WAY: SIMPLE AND ELEGANT, WITH A LIMITED NUMBER OF COLORS. IT MADE A DIFFERENCE AMONG THE CLASS. THE POSTER WAS PAINTED ON CREAMY-WHITE 80G MUNKEN PAPER. THE SIZE OF THE POSTER WAS A3.

Nothing you can sing that can’t be sung. Nothing you can say but you can learn how to play the game. There’s nothing you can make that can’t be made. No one you can save that can’t be saved. Nothing you can do but you can learn how to be you in time. IT’s EASY.
