TOT TIME

MIDCO® AQUATIC CENTER Tot time is designed for toddles and other little tikes, six years and younger, who may not be comfortable with the interactive play features. During Tot Time, the interactive play features will not be operational. Participants will need to have an active swim pass or pay daily admission rates.

AGES: 2–5 Gather your friends at our “house” to play, create, and socialize. Our playgroups are open for kids from infant age to prekindergarten age. We will provide the equipment and toys while parents and adults provide the supervision. A 5-to-1 ratio of children to adults must be observed. No registration required.

AGES: 2–5 Once a month, we will be adding a little extra to our playgroup times. In addition to playing and burning some energy, your child will have the opportunity to put together a fun craft. The same craft will be made each month at Kuehn and Morningside Community Centers. Crafts are free while supplies last. No registration required. December—Holiday Craft

MARICAR C.C. AGES: 4–5 During the winter, shelter for birds is crucial! Dried bottle gourds make for beautiful and spacious birdhouses. Kids will paint and decorate their very own gourd while learning about different birds in South Dakota during winter. Parent participation required. Registration required.

WILDLIFE TREE OF TREATS

MORNINGSIDE C.C. AGES: 2–3 This winter season, make a treat tree for the animals! Displaying edible items on trees outdoors provides a great way to view winter animals and provide them the nutrition they need during the cold weather. Each participant will create and take home four unique items to hang outside your house. Parent participation required. Registration required.

HOLIDAY CANVAS PAINTING

MORNINGSIDE C.C. AGES: 2–5 Spread some holiday cheer with this fun canvas painting. In this class, you will be using your fingers and your toes to paint a fun holiday canvas. Parents will be able to cherish this painting for years to come. This could also be a great holiday gift for the grandparents. Come ready to get messy and to have some fun. Registration required.

KENNY ANDERSON C. C. AGES: 4–5 Moms and kids it is your turn to spend some time one on one! Enjoy sports like basketball, dodgeball, soccer, and kickball! All participants are encouraged to wear your favorite sports team gear. Don’t miss this great opportunity to take part in different competitions, meet and connect with other families all while creating long lasting memories! Registration required.

KENNY ANDERSON C.C. AGES: 2–3 Sensory play is vital in early childhood. Children receive key motor skills that help them gauge everyday sensations such as temperature, vibration, and pressure. To help master these crucial motor skills, we will be playing with and learning all about ice through a fun sensory bin, painting with ice and even blowing icicle bubbles. Parent participation required. Registration required.

KIDS WINTER OLYMPICS

KUEHN C.C. AGES: 4–5 Come try out our indoor winter Olympics. We will be testing you on Olympic events . . . but with a twist. We will be hosting events such as three-legged race, 50yard dash, jump rope competition, tug of war, egg on a spoon race, discus throw, and more. A point system will be in place to proclaim the next winner of Kids Winter Olympics. Participants will be competing in assigned age groups. Medals will be awarded to the top three of each age class! Registration required.

MOM AND ME SNOWMAN CANVAS PAINTING

KENNY ANDERSON C.C. AGES: 2–5 Using your hand, we will be painting some whimsical, fun, little snowmen. Once the handprint is put into place, you can use other materials including ribbon, felt, and wiggle eyes, to create five little snowmen. Working with different materials and textures is great for the sensory exploration in children. Registration required.

A HEDGEHOG HOLIDAY

MEMORIAL ICE RINK AGES: 2–5 Hedgehogs are super cute and super fluffy. Celebrate National Hedgehog Day with a fun morning geared toward the hedgehog. Siouxland Library will read you a story, while we venture out into the cold and walk around the park. Hot chocolate will be provided to keep you warm while you walk. We will then head back into the warming house to make a fun hedgehog craft. Be sure to come dressed to be outside for 15–20 minutes. Registration required.

WINTER WONDERS SENSORY WALK FREE

AGES: 2–3 Enjoy a fun filled session of learning and playing basketball, soccer, and t–ball. Your toddler will work on and improve key motor and teamwork skills, while having fun! All supplies and equipment needed will be provided. Registration required.

AGES: 4–5 Winter is the perfect time to explore! Through using our senses, we will explore the world around us. We will go on a winter scavenger hunt, use our hands to feel different wintery items, smell test winter scents, and listen for unique sounds! Dress warm, we will be outdoors. FURRY FRIEND FEBRUARY

KUEHN C.C. AGES: 4–5 Celebrate our nonhuman friends in this special class. Whether you have pets or just love animals in general, the little ones will love being able to make their own paper accordion dog (just like Slinky from Toy Story) and their own paper plate sheep. Both activities provide a good opportunity to work on fine motor skills like folding, cutting, and tearing with the sheep activity also providing a sensory element with the cotton balls. We will also have a story based on some furry friends. Registration required.

ELECTRIC CAR RACE—DAYTONA 500

MARICAR C.C. AGES: 4–5 Come enjoy our Pre-Daytona 500 celebration by bringing in your electric-controlled cars and competing in our full gym racing courses. We will have a speed race, ten lap race, and obstacle course. We’ll have some electric cars available, but recommend bringing your own. Registration required.

WINTER WILDLIFE DETECTIVES

TUTHILL PARK AGES: 6–9 December 4 is Wildlife Conservation Day. We will learn all about amazing winter wildlife and how we can protect them through animal tracking, an adaptation game, and a tie dye DIY! Participants will go home with their very own naturally dyed item helping us learn all about zero food waste. Registration required.

AGES: 6–9 The only thing normal about this volleyball game is the net! You and your teammates will work on and develop teamwork skills to pass this MEGA volleyball over the net to the opposing teams. No need to bring a team, we will play in a pickup game format and rotate players around that are up for this oversized challenge. Registration required.

NATURE WREATHS

KENNY ANDERSON C.C. AGES: 6–9 Nothing says the holidays are here like a nature wreath craft! Kids will create amazing smelling and beautiful nature wreaths. As we wait for our wreaths to dry, we will participate in a wreath toss game and a candy cane relay race. This nature incorporated, festive and low-waste craft is sure to be the perfect holiday gift. AROMATHERAPY DOUGH

KUEHN C.C. AGES: 6–12 Join us for a fun aromatherapy play dough class! Kids will be given their own aromatherapy play dough that allows them to get creative while using their sense of touch and smell. Essential oils are a fun way to bring life to the dough and help kids relax. Each child will be able to take their aromatherapy dough home with them to continue engaging sensory development. This class is led by essential oil specialist Emily Paulsen. Registration required.

Players will hit the ball over a volleyball net using racquets to try and score points against the other team. You’re sure to have a blast while you challenge yourself with this fast paced team game. MCKENNAN ICE RINK AGES: 6–12 Love being outside during the winter? Always wanted to learn how to ice skate, but never had a chance? Well come on over to McKennan Ice Rink and learn how to skate like a pro. Ice skates are available for rent. All ages are welcome. No registration or experience is necessary.

STORYLAND THEATER WINTER WORKSHOP AGES: 8–12 You’ve seen us up on the band shell stage at McKennan Park. It’s your turn to come on out and learn what it takes to be in the show! Storyland Children’s Theatre invites you to play in January. Join Jaren and Michael for a three-hour workshop with singing, theatre games, and improvisation. Get ready for summer fun during the cold days of winter. Registration required.

AGES: 6–12 WERQ Kids is the fiercely fun dance fitness class based on kid-friendly versions of pop and hip-hop music. The warm up previews, the dance steps in class, and the cool down combines yoga-inspired static stretching and balance poses. No registration required.

INDOOR YOUTH KICKBALL FREE

MARICAR C.C. AGES: 6–12 Looking for an activity to get you ready for summer? We’ve got you covered! We brought one of the games of summer indoor for this awesome event. KICKBALL! Bring your best tennis shoes and we’ll take care of the rest. We’ll cover skills and drills with game play at the end that will have you more than ready for outdoor play! Registration required.

MARICAR C.C. AGES: 6–9 February 3 is National Feed the Birds day! This is a critical day for the health and survival of the wild birds in your backyard! We will celebrate and help the birds by creating two nutritional bird feeders out of natural materials! As we wait for our creations to dry, we will learn all about different South Dakota winter birds and what they like to eat through a fun bird beak game! Registration required.

EMOJI ART

KENNY ANDERSON C.C. AGES: 10–14 Everyone loves using an emoji. In this class, we will be painting emojis onto shrinking foil and turning them into jewelry. Which emoji is your favorite? Turn it into a pin, a ring, a keychain, or even a necklace. You will leave this class knowing that you have created your own jewelry and you will love showing it off. Each participant will create three pieces of jewelry. All supplies included. Registration required.

SNOWY GLOW CAPTURE THE FLAG

TUTHILL ICE RINK AGES: 10–13 Join us for some snowy fun as we play glow-in-the dark capture the flag! Kids will be split up into two different teams, as they try to steal the other team’s flag to secure the victory. Guided only by their teams glow sticks! Get your winter gear on and meet us on the snow-covered field. Participants will meet at the Tuthill Ice Rink Warming House. Registration required.

WINTER TWEEN TREK

ARROWHEAD PARK AGES: 10–12 Winter is a time of shorter days and less time outdoors. Hiking improves both physical and mental health and can even improve school performance. Participants will find a deeper connection to nature during winter! We will hike the trails and look for different winter wildlife. Closed-toed shoes and warm clothes are strongly recommended. Please bring a water bottle. Cameras welcome. Registration required.

MIDCO® AQUATIC CENTER AGES: 18+ This warm water fitness class is sure to keep you on your toes! We will engage your entire body using the water and equipment for resistance. This is YOUR workout, so it can be light—high intensity depending on what you are looking for. The instructor is here to push you and guide you, but know that YOU are ultimately in control of your moves. We will use noodles, fans, gloves, and other equipment to keep the class fun and engaging while utilizing the warm water pool. Registration required.

MIDCO® AQUATIC CENTER AGES: 18+ Spin your wheels in the water! We’re talking about cycling on a water bike. This music driven cardio ride will be sure to challenge you as we incorporate upper body strength training for a total body workout. Water shoes or socks recommended. Classes will take place in the Sanford Health 50 Meter Pool. Registration required.

ALL AGES Stop the Bleed training was developed to teach members of the public to quickly respond to someone bleeding, which can be a life-threatening situation. This class takes approximately 45 minutes. Skills learned to stop bleeding are as important as CPR when a person’s heart stops and to Stop, Drop, and Roll in a fire. In this training, you will gain the ability to: Recognize lifethreatening bleeding, provide immediate response to bleeding (direct pressure, wound packing, proper tourniquet use), and demonstrate ways to stop the bleeding. Winter Wonderland will light up the park nightly, 5 p.m. until 12 Midnight from November 19, 2021-January 9, 2022. The five-story tower in the Visitor Information Center is the perfect location to catch a 360 degree view of the spectacular lights. Winter Wonderland features more than one mile of garland, 40 wreaths, 250 decorated trees, 215 decorated light poles, over 23 miles of light strings, and multiple animated lighted features. Come enjoy the lights and music. Be sure to tune in your radio to FM 97.7 to listen to the festive music while you drive through the park.

LIFEGUARD CLASSES AQUATIC CERTIFICATION CLASSES CALLING ALL LIFEGUARDS! Sioux Falls Parks and Recreation wants YOU to work as a certified lifeguard during our year-round swimming season. We’re excited about building a great team of professional lifeguards and therefore reserve the right to hire only the most qualified applicants for all positions and do not guarantee employment based on training completion. This course is a blended learning course format (19.5 hours in person, 7.5 hours online). The prerequisites for this course include being 15 years of age and having passed the precourse swimming skills test. Upon completion of the WSI course, participants will be certified to teach American Red Cross swimming lessons. This blended learning course includes an online portion that must be completed prior to the first day of class as well as instructor-led classroom instruction skills session. SPENCER PARK 9 a.m. Fun Run/Walk: Join the fun and competition of this frosty morning run. Runners will enjoy the path along the Big Sioux River as they partake in a 5,000 or 10,000 meters course. Turn around points will be noted along the route to aide runners along the way. Participants that are registered before December 15th will receive a Frosty Frolics Fun Run/Walk t-shirt. Runner check-in and day-of registration will be available starting at 8:00 a.m. Cost is $5 PER PARTICIPANT.

FAMILY PARK 10 a.m. to 12 noon Ice Fishing Frenzy: In partnership with The Outdoor Campus, Sioux Falls Parks and Recreation is offering a chance for individuals explore the many benefits ice fishing can provide. Ice fishing poles will be available on a first-come, first-served basis, and participants are welcome to bring their own. All ages welcome. No registration required.

SERTOMA PARK SHELTER 2 to 3 p.m. Winter Yoga in the Park: If you love being outdoors during the beautiful winter days and enjoy the relaxation of yoga, we have the perfect class for you. Participants will experience the benefits of cold weather’s effects on burning calories during exercise as well as the benefits of strength, balance, and flexibility associated with yoga. Sioux Falls Parks and Recreation has partnered with Amy Miller Training to offer this one-hour outdoor yoga class. No registration required.

MARY JO WEGNER ARBORETUM 1 to 4 p.m. Snowshoe Stroll: Sioux Falls Parks Recreation is partnering with the Outdoor Campus and the Mary Jo Wegner Arboretum to offer a snowshoeing activity that will teach you the fundamentals of the sport and allow you to spend time outdoors in the winter at the beautiful Mary Jo Wegner Arboretum. Snowshoes are available on a first come first serve basis. No registration required.

SPENCER DOG PARK 1 to 2:30 p.m. K9 Root Beer Keg Races: Calling all K9s! New this year to our annual Frosty Frolics event comes the 1st annual Sioux Falls Parks & Recreation K9 Root Beer Keg Races! Each participating dog will be put into different weight classes depending on the size of the contestant. Each furry competitor will wear a harness attached to an appropriately sized root beer keg to pull past a designated finish line! We will time each dog and the fastest dog in each class wins! Races will take place at Kirby Dog Park and will begin promptly at 1:00pm! No registration required.

PASLEY PARK 1 to 3 p.m. Snowman Hunt: Explore the Recreation Trail from Pasley Park to Spencer Park while being on the lookout for special Sioux Falls Parks and Recreation hidden treasures hiding along the trail. Those with a powerful eye will be rewarded for their efforts with prizes along the way.

MORNINGSIDE PARK 3:30 p.m. Cardboard Sled "I-Kid-A-Rod": On your mark-get set- go! Sioux Falls Parks and Recreation is bringing the excitement of Alaska’s Iditarod; with a twist! Bring your pre-prepared sled, constructed of only cardboard and duct tape for the sled foundation. Don’t forget the string so you can pull the sled. All sleds will be judged based on creativity, so make your sled stand out! Make sure your sled is sturdy, as parents will pull each racer along the path to stations throughout the course, such as an iceberg jump and seal sneak. Join us inside the community center for hot chocolate and a snack upon completion of the race. No registration required.
