Don’t laugh! Cardboard boats really can float! In fact, many boats raced three times at our previous events. Of those, we expect many will return and go for it once again. But here’s the catch: you may only use corrugated cardboard and duct tape. Use your imagination. Cardboard may be waxed. Here’s a hint: if you layer the cardboard, it will be much stronger. No wood, Styrofoam, fiberglass, or plastic, except for your oars and paddles. All boats must be powered by humans 7 years and older. Five age divisions. All boats will be judged based on creativity, sea-worthiness, and quickest to sink! Come join in on the fun and win some prizes. Each boat will need two participants: one at each end of the pool. Grand Finale

This summer is Christopher Hill’s 20th season as the Bandmaster of the Sioux Falls Municipal Band. To celebrate, he is bringing back some of his favorite concert themes!

We welcome Julia Olson, Miss South Dakota 2016! Julia possesses one of the most beautiful and flexible voices in the region, and you will thoroughly enjoy her exciting performance! JUN 25 .......................................... 8 p.m.

Band Alumnus Nancy Barnes Williams As a part of our Centennial Celebration, we have another new piece composed for the Sioux Falls Municipal Band. Rapid City resident Nancy Barnes Williams, a band alumnus, has written Prairie Wonder, which describes the beautiful geological formations known as Prairie Potholes. She describes it as follows: “A Prairie Pothole is a pocket of earth formed when glaciers covered ancient plains. Today, these depressions fill with water, and are a haven for birds and other animals. This piece depicts such a place in the early hours of predawn and sunrise and evokes all the wonder and majesty of a new day unfolding on the South Dakota Prairie.” JUL 9 ............................................ 8 p.m.

Pianist/Composer/Arranger John Walker John Walker is not only an exceptional pianist; he is a renowned composer and arranger! He has arranged The Union for band and piano, and will be performing it on July 16! Dr. Walker is an outstanding musician who has performed to great acclaim internationally! The Union was written for Abraham and Mrs. Lincoln in 1864. It was composed as a “battle piece,” and it is frequently accompanied by cannons, when available. Falls Overlook Café The quartzite building still standing on the east bank is the Sioux Falls Light and Power Company building, completed in 1908. The building housed three 500-kilowatt hydroelectric generators and used the dam and the millrace from the Queen Bee Mill. In subsequent years the plant added additional coal-fired steam generators. The plant was abandoned in 1974 and donated to the city in 1977. Before remodeling took place to create the Falls Overlook Café, the building was in similar condition as when it was first constructed. Today, Falls Overlook Café serves a variety of family-friendly foods, ice cream treats, and beverages to be enjoyed both inside and out. Historical items are on display. For more information please call the Overlook Café at 605-367-4885.

Stockyards Ag Experience Barn This historic building on the North side of the Falls, was built in the late 1800s as a horse barn, but it is not known by whom or for what purpose. Perhaps it was to house horses that worked any of the eleven stone quarries that were in existence at that time. Perhaps it was part of a local creamery. No records exist to tell us, but the building is charming none-the-less. From 1999–2010, it housed an arts center and became a place for artists to exhibit and practice art. The barn is now the home of the Stockyards Ag Experience which tells the story of agricultural impact in this region, beginning with the Sioux Falls Stockyards. For more information visit www.stockyardsagexperience.org or call 605-332-1917.

Just north of the Horse Barn under the Falls Park open air shelter. Shop a variety of vendors for locally grown produce, meats and poultry, baked goods, garden plants, and craft items. Open Saturdays, 8 a.m.–1 p.m., May through October. Free customer parking. For more information contact Harriet at 605-366-1056, Harriet@SeedtimeandHarvest.net, or visit www.fallsparkfarmersmarket.com.

Queen Bee Mill The remains of the seven-story Queen Bee Mill, a brainchild of Richard Pettigrew, lie on the east side of the river. In the fall of 1878, Pettigrew decided Sioux Falls needed its own mill so farmers could avoid the cost of shipping wheat to Minnesota or Wisconsin. Pettigrew acquired the land and then traveled east to locate an investor: New Jersey capitalist George I. Seney. The mill opened on October 25, 1881, and consisted of a seven-story main structure built of Sioux Quartzite quarried on site. Nearly $500,000 was spent on the construction of the state-of-the-art mill and its supporting structures. At the time of its construction, the mill was one of the most advanced in America. The mill could process 1,500 bushels each day. However, by 1883, the mill was closed—a victim of inadequate water power and a short supply of wheat. Several companies tried in vain to make the mill a success in succeeding years. In 1929, it was converted into a warehouse. On January 30, 1956, fire swept through the structure, destroying the wooden roof and interior floors. The upper walls were later knocked down to prevent them from falling.
