No wonder fans call her “Queen B.” The beauteous Beyoncé is the reigning diva of R&B, a global powerhouse who has Embracing her role assold a seductive more than 130 million albums around the world and “Housewife,” and inseveral real life collected Grammy® awards and nominations. She’s also forged a successful career as an actress. As if that weren’t enough, Beyoncé has made her mark on the fashion world with a dazzling array of styles from her own line, House of Deréon.

Ask the sexy, glamorous and multi-talented performer to put a label on what has led her to superstardom and her answer is surprising. “I guess it would probably be [being a] survivor,” says the star, who first made her mark as lead singer of Destiny’s Child. “I survived everything—being in Destiny’s Child and going through upheavals that changed the group, leaving to perform by myself, doing movies, selling my own line of clothes. I’ve worked hard at everything and taken so many risks.” Sasha Reveals Herself Risks have paid off for Beyoncé, who pushed her image to the limit with her second solo album, I Am... Sasha Fierce, Fans loved her outrageous alter ego, Sasha, and the character gave her the freedom to flaunt sexy outfits on stage and pose in a skimpy bikini on the cover of the Sports Illustrated swimsuit edition. The former Beyoncé Knowles is a long way from the provocative Sasha, although she loves putting on trendy heels and designer dresses. And she’s nothing like Deena Jones, the tough, ambitious diva she played so convincingly in Dreamgirls that audiences thought she must have drawn on her own experience. “Deena was a girl who grew up in a single-parent home without her father,” Beyoncé says. “She had a tough life and that fueled her determination to do almost anything to be a star. On the other hand, I was a kid living with both of my parents in a middle-upper-class family in Houston and going to private school. We had a nice house, cars, and a housekeeper. I learned to sing in the church choir… I would have been fine going to school and becoming a psychologist. But in the end I wanted to take my singing to a higher level.” Beyoncé was forever changed by her riveting performance in Cadillac Records as legendary blues singer Etta James, who was tortured by drugs and personal demons that nearly destroyed her.

“I’m naturally a happy and positive person so to basically be in Etta’s head and experience her pain was tough on me,” she says. “But Etta was always unapologetic, always herself, and said whatever she felt. I think she gave me the courage to do the same. I learned to be a lot more comfortable with who I am.” A New Chord Now, Beyoncé is revealing new sides of herself in her No. 1 album, 4, which has gone platinum. “I tried to mix R&B from the ’70s with ’90s rock ’n’ roll and classic songwriting,” she says. “I wanted to be brave and be myself and not focus on being cool. I wanted to make music that would make people feel that goodness exists and there is love out there.” Married to superstar rapper and record mogul Jay-Z for three years, Beyoncé acknowledges her husband’s influence on her music. “Jay’s lyrics have fathered generations,” she says. “I feel so lucky to be able to watch his genius at work.” The couple has now moved on to a new genre of music, lullabies, as they start a family. Beyoncé credits her mother Tina, aka “Miss Tina,” her partner in the House of Deréon, with helping her keep life in perspective in the midst of the frenzy of fame that surrounds her. “When I was 15, Destiny’s Child had a single, ‘No, No, No,’ that went to No. 1,” she remembers. “I was in a record store with my mother and she was trying to talk to me but I ignored her and kept singing that song to myself. I ask God to keep me grounded and keep the angels around me, because I know I’ve had a lot of angels watching out for me.”

I fell in love with diamonds long before I started my eight-year career in the Caribbean helping people buy them. Sure, a diamond is stunning and never loses its beauty, but I think its true value lies in the story it can tell.

The items in your jewelry box serve as a scrapbook, which tells the story of your life.

My diamond story started well over 100 years ago. My great-grandfather in Austria had inherited a tiny diamond that was set in ugly, tarnished brass. As the years went on, he married and later passed the diamond to his son, my grandfather “Poppa Lou.” In the 1940s, Poppa Lou moved to England with this—let’s be frank—not-too-pretty diamond ring and little else. He met and fell in love with his future bride, my Nanna Fay, and years later, my father, Allan, was born and raised in London’s East End. When my parents met and fell in love, my grandfather offered the ring to my father, who, as you can imagine, was a little unsure of what to do with it. Should he turn it into a small diamond stud? Make it an accent diamond for the engagement ring? My father took it to a jeweler to melt the brass. That’s when it got interesting. Instead of a tiny chip of a diamond, as everyone had believed it to be for so many years, the jeweler found—hidden upside down— a breathtaking 2-carat diamond! Only the cullet, the very bottom of the diamond, had been showing. My family later learned that the diamond was set this way to keep the diamond’s worth a secret when it was transported from country to country during World War I, and then again during World War II, when anything of value might be confiscated. The diamond’s true beauty and value remained a secret until my father presented my mother with her engagement ring—created from the most dazzling 2-carat diamond I have ever seen! My mother’s diamond—which will one day be mine—has been through times of war, peace, childbirth, silly arguments, laughter and, most important, more than 100 years of love and tradition. Living partially in Switzerland, I have a lot of opportunities to be outdoors. I love anything from hiking to swimming in the lake, skiing and biking. The outdoors gives me time to think, be creative and think about new ideas and concepts. Living the good life is… being with my family and seeing everyone happy and healthy. I keep the weekends completely open for my wife and son, and most of the time I don’t even carry my cell phone. What happens when a childhood favorite meets an adult indulgence? You get a dessert trend that has bakers everywhere tastefully combining two vices—sweets and liquor—into one decadent concoction. Whether it’s sorbet spiked with rum, chocolate cake infused with vodka or a cinnamon roll gushing with Godiva caramel liqueur (mmm!), there’s a version to please anyone reliving their childhood with a grown-up twist.

Ten years ago, Jon Walkenstein began putting bourbon into chocolate walnut cookies and drizzled them with raspberry liquor sauce. “As soon as people started tasting them, I knew I was on to something,” he said. Now, his Drunken Chefs bakery in Miami Beach serves a distillery of bourbon and rum balls and other alcohol-spiked confections. The Caribbean is famous for partying, as well as producing sweet and saucy classics such as the banana daiquiri, the piña colada and the rum cake. In the United States, however, only 19 states allow the sale of desserts containing alcohol. Even if you don’t find yourself in a locale that makes and sells these yummy combinations, we can show you how to create your own. Spike up the flavor of desserts with rum or other liquor, like this creative baker does.

Lemon Drop Cupcakes Batter INGREDIENTS FOR 12 full-size cupcakes 3/4 cup self-rising flour 2/3 cup all-purpose flour 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, softened

1 cup sugar 2 large eggs, at room temperature 1/4 cup milk 1/8 cup freshly squeezed lemon juice 1/8 cup vodka zest of 1 lemon

Batter Directions: Preheat oven to 350Â° F. Line a 1/2 cup, 12-muffin tin with cupcake baking cups. In a small bowl, combine both of the flours and set aside. In a large bowl, on the medium speed of an electric mixer, cream the butter until smooth. Add the sugar gradually and beat until fluffy, about 3 minutes. Add the eggs 1 at a time, beating well after each addition. Add the dry ingredients in 3 parts, alternating with the milk, lemon juice and vodka. With each addition, beat until the ingredients are incorporated, but do not overbeat. Use a rubber spatula to scrape down the batter in the mixing bowl to make sure all of the ingredients are well blended. Using an ice cream scoop or a large spoon, carefully pour the batter into the cupcake liners, filling them about 2/3 full. Bake for 18-20 minutes or until a cake tester inserted into the center of the cupcake comes out clean. Remove the cupcakes tray from the oven and cool on a wire rack for 15 minutes. Remove them from the tin and cool completely on a wire rack before icing.

Lemon Vodka Buttercream Frosting: 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, softened 3 1/2 to 4 cups confectionersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; sugar 1/8 cup vodka 1/8 cup lemon juice 1 teaspoon milk Place the butter in a large mixing bowl. Add about half (2 cups) of the sugar and then the vodka & lemon juice. On the medium speed of an electric mixer, beat until smooth and creamy, about 3 minutes. Add the milk then gradually add the remaining sugar, 1 cup at a time, beating well after each addition (about 2 minutes), until the icing is thick enough to be of good spreading consistency. You may not need to add all of the sugar depending on your sweet tooth. Voila! NOTE: Icing can be stored in an airtight container for up to 3 days. Throwing a Caribbean-themed party is a great way to show off your photos and fabulous finds from your exotic vacation. It can also be a chance for you and your guests to help the residents of some of the islands you’ve visited.

Your gathering can be more meaningful if it doubles as a fundraiser. When sending out your invitations, be sure to let your friends know that you are raising money for a charity close to your heart. Guests can also contribute canned goods or clothing, depending on the organization’s needs. Since this is also a fundraiser, don’t forget to offer information and display appropriate photos about the charity or cause so they can get a sense of the importance of their participation. Running raffles and holding auctions for cool prizes make it enjoyable for guests. Host a 50/50 raffle in which the person with the winning ticket takes half the money collected and the other half goes to the charity. Or you can buy items on your trip (T-shirts, hats, trinkets) and put them in a basket to raffle off. Party Time To get guests in the mood, use postcards from your travels as stationery (or simulate the postcard look) and encourage guests to dress in tropical attire. Fill your space with an explosion of tropical colors. Choose colorful tableware and linens, display enlarged photos from the islands

you visited, and light coconut-scented candles. Play calypso or Latin music and get everyone up for a game of limbo. Give party foods a tropical twist by making a mango glaze for ribs or a pork loin; serve coconut shrimp on skewers poked into a melon half. Sprinkle jerk seasoning onto chicken wings and mix up a batch of rum punch (see recipe). Serve plantain chips in the brim of a straw hat and line your platters with a real or silk banana leaf or palm frond to enhance the theme. Send guests home with Caribbean souvenirs, and don’t forget to send notes to thank everyone for their generous donations.

RUM PUNCH

Sweeten the Celebration (8-10 Servings) 1 cup fresh (not concentrated) lime juice 1 cup grenadine syrup 2 cups Jamaican dark rum 1 cup light rum 2 cups pineapple juice 2 cups orange juice Combine all ingredients, chill and serve in a large punch bowl. Garnish with pineapple wedges or orange slices.
