Watches all have one thing in common—they tell time. Here are a few of the factors that distinguish one watch— that may already be a marvel of style and workmanship— from another.

CHOPARD

Tradition

A watchmaking house that is more than a century old has a wealth of tradition behind it. Artisans must apprentice to learn the trade, which involves working by hand with infinitesimally tiny elements. Few have the patience or skill to master the techniques, which makes their labor intensely expensive.

Reputation

The age of a watchmaking house also adds to its mystique and, for some buyers, to its trustworthiness. “An old and well-known brand tends to drive certain prices much higher than brands that are less known,” says watch expert Haygo Demir. Such a watch can impart instant status to the wearer, and he

(enduring style) A prestigious watch can impart instant status to the wearer. “feels comfortable buying a more expensive piece because of its brand cachet.” A watch with the exact same attributes that is made by a little-known house can cost up to 50 percent less, Demir points out.

CAARTIER

Craftsmanship

Even a simple movement watch requires skill to assemble, but the most expensive have something extra, usually at least one if not several “complications,” or elements of the watch that don’t tell time. Some of the most difficult to craft and thus highly prized of these complications include the tourbillon—as in Chopard’s L.U.C. Tourbillon Tech Steel Wings—and the minuterepeater, as found in Cartier’s Tortue.

Materials

The Santos 100 Triple limited edition gets its name from its ability to flip to three different displays.

The kind and amount of material used in a particular watch can radically affect its price. A gold or platinum face, is more precious than stainless steel and thus significantly more costly. In some watches, not only the face and back but the small internal parts themselves are made of precious metals that are handcrafted. Ebel’s Beluga watch, for example, features a quartz movement; the intricacy

of the watch is in its presentation, which includes an 18K white gold face studded with diamonds and an onyx dial.

Limited Production

Rarity also raises the price of a watch. Many watchmaking houses make very small batches of limited production watches, perhaps 100 in total. In the case of the Cartier Santos 100 Triple, only 20 pieces were made. The company made the Santos 100 in 2004 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of its classic Santos watch, and the limited edition Triple in 2008. Each watch comes with a certificate and an individual number engraved on the back. The case is 18K white gold set with 585 diamonds (more than seven carats) and the dial, made of 18K white gold prisms, enables a three-face display. In some limited production watches, every element is handmade by the company. In many watches, the movement is machinemade and then “enhanced, modified and decorated” in such an innovative and artistic way that it rises in value, Demir says.

Father Son:

From to

Passing Down Family Heirlooms BY danielle cohen

When Gil Burstiner, 40, of Marietta, Georgia, shares his first recollection of his grandfather’s treasured watch, he laughs. Just a boy at the time, no more than 10, he recalls his father showing him the family heirloom the day he received it back from being serviced in Switzerland. Only Burstiner dropped and broke the timepiece, and his father—who rarely wore it due to his knack for breaking and losing things—had to send it right back to the manufacturer to be fixed again.

Burstiner never had an opportunity to meet his grandfather, who passed before he was born, but the watch remains a deeply cherished family gift. “It was one of the only surviving things from my father’s father,” he says. “It is my prized possession,” bestowed to Burstiner from his father at his college graduation. Burstiner plans to pass it on to one of his four children—likely his eldest, Charlie, 10—who has already expressed an interest in it.

The personal nature of a watch, the emotion connected to it and the sentimental value it compounds with each passing day, make it one of the most appropriate items to pass on to the next generation. “Every family has traditions which are passed on from generation to generation,” says Mirko Kosic, a watch collector who

A watch reflects a lifetime of occasions and memories.

“It connects my grandfather, father, me—and my son,” says Burstiner, adding that he would like to “establish a legacy” with all of his children by presenting an heirloom-quality timepiece like a Cartier or Chopard to each one upon their graduation from college.

inherited an Omega pocket watch from his grandfather. “And as time is measured by a watch, and time is endless, there is nothing better to be passed on to the next generation than a watch, which will be a proud ‘witness’ of that family tradition.” As a Port & Shopping Guide, Kosic passes on his watch and jewelry knowledge to cruise line shoppers.

“A watch reflects a lifetime of occasions, memories and the personality of who owns it,” says Leonid Khankin, designer and managing director of Ernst Benz. “There are so few things that are made outside of the watch and jewelry industry that last so long and can retain so many feelings and personality. It is passed on so those feelings will never be lost or forgotten.”

“It connects my grandfather, father, me—and my son.” —Gil Burstiner, heirloom watch owner

Success, a milestone, a reward, an indulgence, a whim, a carefully chosen purchase, a celebration. No matter the intent behind the acquisition, a watch begins accumulating memories—for both the watch owner and the people who are close to that individual—the second its procurement occurs.

She’s not Carrie Bradshaw, but Sarah Jessica Parker can still set a trend or two.

When it comes to fashion there are no rules. —Sarah Jessica Parker

Style in the City

by Harrison Myers

Petite actress Sarah Jessica Parker and her fashionobsessed alter ego, Carrie Bradshaw, share an irreverent sense of fashion and a knack for setting trends—the difference being that Parker, unlike the divine Miss B, is living in the real world. Parker went from actress to icon of style when she starred as Carrie on the HBO series Sex and the City, helping to make household names of such high-end designers as Dolce & Gabbana and Manolo Blahnik. She and her fashion-conscious gal pals were as popular for what they bought and who they wore as for their revelations about the intimate ups and downs of their love lives. And the 43-year-old Parker can still channel Carrie when she needs to. Slim and self-assured, she stole the show at the London premiere of the big-screen version of Sex and the City. She wore a frothy green silk tulle dress designed by Alexander McQueen and a surprisingly original hat by British milliner Phillip Treacy that at first glance looked a lot like, well, like a potted plant. She was the essence of Carrie Bradshaw: cute, whimsical and not afraid to take a fashion risk. Parker reveals she learned the secret of taking a chance with style from costume designer Patricia Field, who first dressed her for the TV series. “When it comes to fashion there are no rules,” Parker says. “All rules should be thrown out the window. By doing that you take great risks and people make fun of certain things, but the hits are enormous and the misses are comical.”

(Celebrity style) For Carrie and company, the risks usually paid off. Field dressed them in a Who’s Who of designers—Prada, Fendi, Dior, Chanel, Roberto Cavalli and more—and turned Carrie, especially, into a goddess for the fashion-forward. Field is known for mixing high fashion with flea-market finds to create signature looks that mass-

Parker can still drive the paparazzi wild in haute couture at premieres and parties, but she insists she’s not obsessed with what she wears. “I am the worst of dabblers,” she says. “I love beautifully made clothes and God knows I had access to a lot of them for a lot of years on Sex and the City so I understand the attraction.” …I ONLY PLAY A DATING MAVEN ON TV With the movie’s release, Parker relived her instant fame as the sardonically witty columnist who narrated her own story of sex, love and the fashion-obsessed single woman in New York City. But looking back to the start of the TV series, she admits there were moments when she had her doubts about taking on the role of Carrie. “Part of it was my fear that everything would change, that I wouldn’t be able to do movies and theater,” she says. “I knew that when you’re seen in living rooms every week you are so much more recognizable and accessible.” In fact, Parker reveals with a wry grin that the privacy she gave up went beyond anything she imagined. “People felt comfortable about coming up and saying very intimate things to me—things you wouldn’t expect to hear from a 36

ANNIE At age 12, she was a hit on Broadway as the adorably free-spirited orphan. SQUARE PEGS (1983-84) She played an awkwardly funny high school kid in the critically acclaimed TV series that lasted only one season. FOOTLOOSE (1984) Her supporting role must have been worth it because she skipped her senior prom for the filming. LA STORY (1991) Her first big break came as Steve Martin’s bubbly lover, the carefree and liberated SanDeE*. HONEYMOON IN VEGAS (1992) She played Nicolas Cage’s love interest in the film, but the couple can’t manage to tie the knot, even when they go to Sin City for a quickie wedding. She fell in love for real with her leading man. MIAMI RHAPSODY (1995) While trying to decide whether to accept her boyfriend’s proposal, Parker’s character discovers that nearly everyone else in the family has a surprise in their love lives. HOW TO SUCCEED IN BUSINESS WITHOUT REALLY TRYING (1995) She co-starred opposite Matthew Broderick and their on-stage chemistry led to marriage. FIRST WIVES CLUB (1996) Parker held her own in an all-star cast, playing a vapid social climber dating Bette Midler’s exhusband.

MARS ATTACKS (1996) She managed to be funny playing a small role in a bestforgotten comedy from Tim Burton. ONCE UPON A MATTRESS (1996) Her role in the revival of the Broadway musical got her a Tony nomination as she filled the shoes of Carol Burnett, who had originated the role of Princess Winnifred. SEX AND THE CITY (TV series , 1998-2004) She hit the fame jackpot playing Carrie Bradshaw for six seasons on HBO. To prove it was more than luck and clothes to die for, she filled a shelf with Emmy and Golden Globe awards. THE FAMILY STONE (2005) Parker plays an uptight businesswoman who feels out of place when she spends Christmas with her boyfriend and his free-spirited family. FAILURE TO LAUNCH (2006) Romantic sparks fly when she is hired by the parents of a slacker, played by Matthew McConaughey, to get him married and out of the house. SEX AND THE CITY (The movie, 2008) After a long wait, amid rumors it would never happen, the gal pals reunite, succeeding with both the critics and at the box office.

Parker launched Bitten, her affordable clothing line, in 2008.

stranger. I understood they just wanted to share problems dealing with their love lives and I’d usually let it go unless their behavior got totally out of hand, which sometimes it did,” she says. “I’m not Carrie. I’m not a dating professional. I’m not a sex specialist. I just played one. I’d probably be as good at giving life-changing relationship advice as [Grey’s Anatomy star] Patrick Dempsey would be at performing open-heart surgery even though he’s very convincing as a doctor.” As a mother, Parker’s daily fashion tends to be casual. She wanted to capture that ease and style with her affordable-clothing line, Bitten, featuring jeans, tops and hoodies. Parker, who also has her own Coty fragrances, Lovely and Covet, has been a hands-on participant in marketing and distribution for the products that bear hername. “When I do something it’s only because I know that I’m going to take the credit or the blame 100 percent,” she says. “I spend a lot of time getting things right.” That same determination has shaped Parker’s acting career from Broadway—her first starring appearance was in Annie at age twelve—to the big screen. “The minute I’m not

In an age when excess clutters our closets and our souls, and budget worries keep us from expressing our personal style, where can we find inspiration?

In the past. Audrey Hepburn and Grace Kelly, style icons nonpareil, still offer timeless lessons in style and class. Their passion for perfectly tailored clothes and luxury accessories, and the manner in which they wore them, elevated them from fashionable

Grace Kelly showed style worth emulating when she used her Hermès scarf as a sling for her broken arm and her giant Hermès bag (now known, of course, as “The Kelly”) to conceal her pregnancy. We can also take cues from such legends as classic items of worth that will last for generations. Keep your wardrobe minimal, with a few wellmade garments that suit your body and personality. Chanel Cruise Collection Masterminded by Karl Lagerfeld by anthea turner

House of Chanel, a name rich in history, dressed some of Hollywood’s most elegant leading ladies: Audrey Hepburn, Elizabeth Taylor, Anne Baxter. The legendary label inspires visions of the little black dress, signature black-and-white suits, classic purses, fabulous shoes and, of course, lavishly draped pearls.

The spirit of Marilyn Monroe is reawakened by the beautiful Scarlett Johansson.

Angelina Jolie is a seductive reminder of Liz Taylor at the height of her stardom.

The tradition continues with the work of Karl Lagerfeld, the maverick who took classic Chanel elegance and brought it to the current fashion world. He is now widely recognized as one of the most significant fashion designers of our time. His recent Chanel Cruise Collection was designed for travelers sailing across oceans in the heart of winter, headed for sunny climes. Lagerfeld accomplished the ultimate fashionworld feat and masterminded ultra-fresh, high-fashion suits, cover-ups, gowns and swimwear for men and women, while maintaining the integrity and signature style of Chanel. The collection embodies the clean lines and sophistication of original Chanel designs worn by style icons of the past, while being sleek and contemporary enough for modern-day fashionistas such as Cameron Diaz and Angelina Jolie. The Chanel Cruise Collection provides a contemporary twist on a classic Old Hollywood look. Never out of season, never out of style—an investment as safe as a diamond—the Chanel piece you own today will be the most prized possession of the generations who follow you.

Let your diamond bracelet speak for itself or stack it with your watch and other bangles/bracelets. If it is simple and elegant, it can complement your watch and add sparkle to your outfit. If it is large and flashy, it can be worn alone. You can choose from standard diamond tennis bracelets, bangles or stackables.

Fabulous Finds at Great Prices Await You in the Caribbean

Style

Savvy travelers and knowledgeable shoppers alike know that the Caribbean is, hands down, the best place in the world to shop for diamonds, gemstones, designer jewelry and watches. Here’s why: Tax-Free and Duty-Free – Merchants don’t pay tax or duty on goods imported into the Caribbean, and often realize in substantial savings that they pass on to the consumer.

Volume – Caribbean merchants buy and sell in mass volume, passing savings directly to the consumer. Manufacturers and brands also offer special pricing based on the sheer volume of products sold.

Vacation Shopping – Everyone shops on vacation because it’s fun. And it’s the perfect opportunity to find something special to help you remember your time at sea.

On the following pages, you will find some of the most beautiful and unusual jewelry designs available in the Caribbean. Make it a point to visit the Port & Shopping Guide onboard for VIP cards, maps with cruise line-guaranteed stores, special savings coupons and expert advice on where to shop.

Face it

Flaunt it Sun-splashed days and glittering nights—that’s your cruise experience in a nutshell. As you glide elegantly from day to night, and from port to port, your beauty and sun protection regimen is sure to benefit from many of these luxury products.

Go with the flow Your body may need a little time to adjust to your cruise routine. “Pre-vacation stress and flying may have left you dehydrated and sleep-deprived, which show up as dry skin and under-eye circles,” says Dr. Diane Baker of the American Academy of Dermatology. “Keep drinking tons of water, catch up on your sleep and go easy on the alcohol at first.”

Be sun-smart

Pack up some memories, some photos and some choice purchases, but don’t take home a sunburn. “It’s so easy to get a burn that has the potential to turn risky down the road,” says Baker. “There is such a thing as safe sun exposure. The key is protection.” In a word, that means sunscreen: “broad-spectrum to combat both UVA and UVB rays with at least SPF15,” Baker says. “The critical thing is not the SPF factor but reapplying it at least every two hours. And don’t forget your neck, ears and feet, and use an SPF lip balm.” Baker feels that “spray sunscreen is easy to use, especially for men and kids.”

Sun Savvy

(elements of style) This award-winning cream from Lancôme fights back against the visible effects of age and hormonal changes. Natural ingredients including wild yam, soy, sea algae and barley combine with Pro-Xylane™ —a patented scientific breakthrough—to plump, moisturize and firm skin. With SPF 15, this is complete and effective skin care.

Combat the Climate Sunny and Humid Sensitive skin? You can feel protected and comfortable in the sun with Biotherm's new line of sun products that offer high UVA and UVB protection, while boosting natural skin regeneration, minimizing signs of premature aging and preventing skin irritation caused by sun exposure.

(Caribbean, Mexican Riviera, Panama Canal) In this climate, dermatologist Dr. Diane Baker says, “dry skin will bloom, but oily and combination complexions may go into overdrive and break out. Keep your face scrupulously clean and switch to a lighter moisturizer.” When it’s humid out there, Baker recommends tinted moisturizing lotion with SPF15 or higher, which hydrates, protects and evens out skin tone in one step. “Try one of the new bronzing sticks instead of letting your legs tan,” she counsels. “It’s sexier in the long run.”

Sunny and Dry

(Mediterranean, Baja California) Baker warns that “this climate will dry out your skin. Sunscreen in oil or lotion form will help hydrate it. And slathering on body lotion right after you shower seals in the moisture.” “The air-conditioning in your cabin can be drying as well,” she says. “Go for a rich night cream, and don’t forget your eye area.” “Try to choose the table or the chaise with the umbrella,” Baker advises. “Whenever you can, cover up with tightly woven apparel, and check out the new sun-protective clothing with SPF right in the fabric.” Protect your scalp and your hair with a scarf or hat, and rinse after pool swimming. “Now’s the time for gentler shampoos and deep-conditioners,” she says.

credit tocome

Sunny and Breezy When it comes to winning the war against wrinkles, Biotherm has an army of natural sources working together to regenerate skin in Rides Repair cream. By combining the power of mineral and organic silicium with pure thermal plankton, it reduces even deep-set lines within just two weeks.

(Alaska, Atlantic Canada, Norway) Guard against windburn by wearing moisturizer or thick-textured protective balms. Northern light can be hard on your eyes. “Keep those sunglasses with you,” Baker urges. “The temp may be cool, but that sun is strong,” she says. “And UVB burning rays go right through clouds. So keep working that sunscreen. Don’t leave your stateroom without it!”

(elements of style) Finding your Signature Scent Even if it's hot outside, you'll be smelling fresh as a flower.

Your fragrance says so much about your personality. Are you fresh and lighthearted, or warm and sensual? Whoever you are, there’s a perfume that captures your spirit, so why not seek out a new scent or perhaps revisit an old favorite? You’ve relaxed in their signature track pants and hoodies. You’ve glammed up with their sparkly logo tees. You’ve even dressed up your pooch in their iconic doggy sweaters. The Juicy Couture brand is universal, and now the fragrance line completes the picture. Watermelon, mandarin, passion fruit and caramel crème brûlée are just some of the scents that make up this luscious perfume.

A blend of French elegance and American spontaneity, Very Irrésistible Givenchy is a captivating fragrance that features star anise, patchouli and the arresting bouquet of five roses, including one named for the perfume’s spokeswoman, actress Liv Tyler.

Yves Saint Laurent is the epitome of French

style, and the fashion icon’s newest fragrance, Elle, embodies YSL’s legendary unpredictability and unique style with dazzling notes that include lychee, peony, pink berries, freesia, jasmine and vetiver. Adding to the glamour is the limited-edition gift, which includes a solid Elle perfume and fuchsia lip gloss.

Make It Up

(elements of style)

Your cruise is sure to give you a healthy glow, but even the most radiant complexions sometimes need a little pick-me-up. Touche Blush by Yves Saint Laurent is an ultra-fine powder that provides a luminous and natural result.

PhotoS courTesy of chanel

Wave-swept sands are the inspiration for this gently illuminating bronzing powder by Chanel. Oil-free yet truly moisturizing, this compact will beautifully enhance your vacation glow and allow you to retain that healthy bronzed look back home.

Be Dazzling, Day and Night Daytime: Light, Lively and Lovely It’s high noon. The sun is bright and you’re out and about: splashing in the pool, reading on deck, stretching mind and body in a yoga class, or just luxuriating with a spa massage. Your makeup should match your active day as well as your cute sundress and new sandals.

Sheer, neutral shades will enhance your healthy natural glow. And the new crop of weightless, transparent makeup appears effortlessly polished. Try a liquid tint, which adds color without building up. Keep color light on your lips as well with a rosy lip gloss—a classic daytime look. The best are not too sticky and have added sun protection. For eyes, begin with a quick concealer. Then subtly emphasize eye color with a mauve-y brown shadow. Brush on mascara (but don’t forget to curl first, for a winsome, wide-eyed look).

Evening: Time to Shine

Kick up your high heels with an easy, glamorous beauty look. Shimmer and sparkle are extra-magical on a cruise, but don’t go overboard. Focus shine on just one feature: lips, eyes, cheeks or décolletage. Sleek and smooth is the modern way to take your hair. Get Euro-style shine with a hair glosser, then pluck a flower from your stateroom bouquet and pin it in front of your ear. Another way to go: Keep your mane braided or twisted during the day, and then let it out for soft, sexy waves at night. Daytime loveliness or evening glamour—either way, it’s a snap.

Wrist feeling a little light? Try on these watch-buying tips. Start with the band, first by deciding how the timekeeping piece will be used: for sport, casual or dress occasions. Consider if you will need a durable metal such as stainless steel or gold that will survive the test of time; rubber for true water resistance; or leather such as alligator, bison or ostrich to make a fashion statement. Next, prioritize the functions that are important to you, from a multitude of state-of-the-art features including health benefits, multi-sport, calendars, GPS, diving and chronograph. “Today we have combinations of several complications in the same watch; some have more than twenty functions,” explains watch collector Mirko Kosic, who shares his expertise with cruise guests as an onboard Port & Shopping Guide. Also factor in lifespan. Quartz watches can last 30 years, whereas automatic or mechanical watches keep ticking well beyond a century mark if properly serviced every few years. Whatever watch you select, the decision is a significant one, says Leonid Khankin, designer and managing director of Swiss watch manufacturer Ernst Benz: “Your watch shows how valuable your time is and reflects personal taste. You cannot drive your car to the dinner table or bring your house into

a meeting, but your watch can really reflect who you are anywhere.”

Gone are the days when one watch had to carry its wearer through work and play. The dizzying variety of well-designed watches means that these days, a timepiece is just that: a piece of artistry that reflects the mood not just of a moment in time, but of a moment of the day.

Tiger Woods sports the TAG Heuer Golf (above).

Just as the once-humble sneaker has come into its own as an essential, to be thoughtfully considered and even coveted, so have these active-lifestyle watches captured the imagination of buyers everywhere. The watches often feature an array of markings signifying everything from the month and the day to the countdown for a regatta. There is no segment of the market, from the kitschy to the collectible, that is not enamored of this style.

Timeless This is the white-cotton shirt of the watch wardrobe: fresh, indispensable, versatile and easily dressed up or down. Elegance goes without saying, and deceptively simple design makes a timeless statement. These watches are often reintroduced after decades, when the beauty of their design has become sufficiently retro to attract appreciative young buyers. Movado’s unisex Museum watch is possibly the apotheosis of this concept of watch face as design; the signature simplicity of a single dot at 12 o’clock on an otherwise empty black canvas has become a classic.

When Clark Gable took off his shirt in 1934’s It Happened One Night, revealing his bare chest, he sent undershirt sales plummeting and made it official: What movie stars do on screen influences their legions of fans.

Steve McQueen and his TAG Heuer Monaco watch caused a stir in Le Mans (1971). Above, the modern-day timepiece that the movie inspired.

(watches in style) That’s also true of watches. On the wrist of someone like Humphrey Bogart or Matt Damon, the right timepiece can capture the spirit of both the character and the actor. In

Casablanca, quintessential leading man Bogart wears an

elegant 1941 Longines tonneau-shaped watch, with a copper-rose dial, gold numerals, 17 jewels, seconds subdial and metal bracelet. His character, Rick Blaine, possesses a laissez-faire attitude and is a hit with the ladies, but he is also a romantic and ultimately dedicated to the cause of right. His watch bespeaks an individual who is a solid citizen and a lover of the good life. Bogart also sported the

Matt Damon carried on the TAG Heuer tradition in The Bourne Ultimatum (2007).

Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman defined romance in Casablanca (1941); at right, an updated version of the Longines watch that Bogart wore in the film.

TAG Heuer is still enjoying the stir Steve McQueen created when he wore a Monaco chronograph in the racing film

Le Mans. The

watch’s square steel case seems to echo the legendary actor’s own square jaw. Since both actor and character loved racing, the Monaco embodies McQueen’s integrity. The company also made the link quartz chronograph with a black face worn by Matt Damon as Jason Bourne in Robert Ludlum’s thriller trilogy, which includes

The Bourne Ultimatum.

In real life, most men never need a watch to help them outwit villains or evade rogue agents. Then again—you never know.

Best Friend

by Karen Tina Harrison

Nothing is as potently symbolic as a diamond. It is the strongest and most precious stone known to man…and the most romantic substance known to woman. Humans have always found diamonds to be profoundly moving. Ancients Greeks called them “tears of the gods,” and Romans believed them to be fragments of distant stars. Diamond engagement rings caught on during the Renaissance, when Emperor Maximilian of Austria presented one to his betrothed, Mary of Burgundy. By the late 1800s, diamond rings were an American and European custom, and today this sublime tradition is global. As old as earth and as radiant as a bride and

groom’s love, diamonds truly are forever.

So, whether proposing to your sweetheart, commemorating a special vacation or just because you want to treat yourself, there is no better way than with a flawless diamond. It’s a remembrance that lasts a lifetime, especially when it marks a visit to the breathtaking locales of the Caribbean. Is it any wonder this lush, lovely region is the top shopping stop for those who want to mark the times of their lives with a sparkling gem? Today there are more reasons than ever to capture the prize sought for centuries by king and commoner alike. Expert designers are combining traditional artistry with modern technology to create spectacular new variations on the classic stone, and unforgettable ways for you to express your own personal diamond style.

Diamonds are graded on a scale established by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) that ranges from D (colorless) to Z (fancy yellow). Those that come in colors, such as Sophia Fiori’s blue and pink stones, have become quite popular.

I Do

A carat is a unit that refers to the weight of the diamond, not to the size. Each carat is divided into 100 points. A one-andone-half-carat stone would be labeled 1.50 ct. 0.50 carat 1.00 carat

1.50 carat

2.00 carat

3.00 carat

Inclusions are identifying characteristics, like tiny crystals, clouds or feathers, seen in a diamond. Clarity refers to the relative presence or absence of inclusions; the size, nature, number and position of inclusions all influence the price.

The cut affects the amount of light reflected and dispersed through the diamond. The Eighty-Eight® diamond features eight sides and 88 facets, about 30 more facets than the average round diamond. Hearts On Fire manufactures diamonds that, when magnified, display a spectacular ring of eight symmetrical hearts from the bottom and a fire-burst from the top.

Groundbreaking

Diamonds

New cuts offer intense color and greater depth by danielle Cohen A diamond captures the essence of beauty and passion with its all-encompassing twinkle. Its brilliance is maximized when light is caught in the stone and reflected outward. The number and placement of the facets—the angled cuts in the diamond—can greatly improve the overall dazzle and color. The more facets, the more opportunities for light to enter the stone and dance in the labyrinth of angles, thus radiating fire. The exquisite stone continues to be enhanced in groundbreaking ways. Today, most traditional diamonds have been joined by innovative new cuts that spark the imagination.

Crown of Light The patented Crown of Light diamond has 90 facets. It is mined and manufactured in Namibia—with rough material direct from the Namibia Diamond Trading Company’s diamond mines—allowing the people there to benefit from trade skills, school, healthcare and a national pride that shines as bright as the diamonds it represents.

The Eighty-Eight Inspired by ancient China and the Tang Dynasty’s belief that the number eight holds unparalleled mystique, power and good fortune, Finesse Diamonds created The Eighty-Eight, above, which features eight sides with 88 facets. Many of the company’s stones are crafted in Namibia in southern Africa, where local residents are employed to cut and polish.

These creative designs and ingenious cuts build on perfection

Two hearts turn cruise ship into the love boat

Hearts On Fire The square-shaped Dream diamond by Hearts On Fire is handcrafted with 70 facets. The traditional 58 are accompanied by an additional row of eight around the perimeter to define its shape, plus four half-moon facets allow the bottom main facets to match the exact dimensions as those on a round diamond, explains certified gemologist Maarten J. de Witte, director of research for Hearts on Fire. Dream’s crown features a symmetrical series of triangular facets, and when analyzed face down through a ProportionScope—a viewing device that provides a direct look at a diamond’s path of light—eight perfectly matched hearts become visible.

Cento by Roberto Coin

As much as she loves her job as an onboard Port & Shopping Guide, Leanne Cribben couldn’t wait to go home to Kent, England, to show off her Hearts On Fire engagement ring. “I love it. It’s beautiful. I couldn’t have picked a better ring.” In summer 2008, after hiking through the mountains and setting up a picnic under the trees on Lower Dewey Lake in Skagway, Alaska, Kyle Ronellenfitch proposed to Leanne. The wedding is planned for September 2009 on Lake Louise in Alberta, Canada.

Real Life Love

“She's perfect,” Kyle said about his 24-year-old sweetheart. “She keeps me calm at times of stress and allows me to be the big kid that I really am.” Kyle had the advantage over most men searching for diamonds. As a Port & Shopping Guide aboard various ships, Kyle is a shopping expert who knew just the diamond he wanted: Hearts On Fire, which displays a perfect circle of eight hearts when viewed from the bottom and a perfectly formed symmetrical starburst when seen from the top. Kyle and Leanne met in 2006, when they were both working onboard a ship—he as a dancer and she as a boutique sales advisor. In 2007, they began working together as Port & Shopping Guides. “But no matter how much you know about something, you still get nervous making a decision,” said Kyle, 28, of Calgary, Canada. “I help guests make a decision every week, but something like this gives you a new respect for the advice you give others.”

130

08DS-JewlDiamonds.indd 130

After two years of cutting and re-cutting $4 million worth of rough stones, the Cento diamond by Roberto Coin was realized. With 100 hand-cut facets, Cento (pronounced ‘chen-toh,’ which translates into ‘100’ in Italian and is an Italian term used for perfection) is the company’s signature cut and has a visible floral pattern in the crown, highlighting the symmetry of each stone. The exacting and meticulous nature with which this stone is cut is evidenced by the 12 to 15 hours it takes to cut one Cento—compared to the six to eight

hours it takes to cut a typical round stone.

Crisscut by Christopher Designs One of Christopher Designs’ three patents is for the unique diamond cut, the Crisscut®. Although it was invented by Christopher Slowinski, the cut is not named for the designer, but rather for the crisscrossed facets that

give the diamond brilliance and fire.

Solare 129 by Sophia Fiori

A New Revolution in Pearls by danielle cohen Despite pearls’ traditional jewelry association (think: white round strand or stud earrings), today they’re obtainable in multitudinous shades, shapes and settings. Pearls have evolved. “They are no longer your grandmother’s pearls,” says Isaac Levy, whose company, Yvel, offers adventurous shades— gold, brown, champagne—in the Indonesian, Tahitian and South Sea pieces of its sophisticated, fashion-forward Golden Brown collection. “They are as appropriate with jeans as with business suits— the ultimate fashion accessory,” agrees Maureen Gribbin, spokeswoman for Mikimoto, which presents changeable styles in its chic Pearls in Motion collection. With Pearls in Motion by Mikimoto, you can change your look just by moving the beads.

From Sea to Shining Necklaces by Danielle Cohen

Stunning as pearls are, their creation is just as remarkable. The only gemstone grown inside a living organism, a pearl is created as an oyster’s defense mechanism against an invading object. In 1893, Kokichi Mikimoto, a pioneer in the modern cultured-pearl industry, conceived a method of duplicating the natural process by inserting a shell fragment into the oyster. The procedure, known as nucleation, results in the oyster growing thousands of layers of nacre, an organic substance that molds around the irritant and eventually forms a pearl. Also known as mother-of-pearl, nacre is a crystalline substance that creates the gemstone’s remarkable iridescent sheen. Rather than rely on shellfish from the sea, farmers even raise their own pearl producers by breeding high-quality farmed oysters. The babies grow for one to two years until large enough to be nucleated. Even when nature is helped along like this, it may be several years before the pearls are prime for harvesting—so a cultured pearl is really no less precious than a natural one. Today nearly all pearls are cultured. Farms breed and raise thousands of oysters for two to five years to produce a crop of cultured pearls used in the style-setting creations of Yvel, Mikimoto and other jewelry designers.

“Wow your guests,” says event designer Preston Bailey, pictured at right. “Bring out the good china and glasses every time you entertain. You and your friends are worth it! ”

Event designer Preston Bailey, who has created some of the most stunning parties for America’s elite, suggests placing dramatic statements at the entrance, such as large floral centerpieces for the tables. “I am making some that are six to ten feet tall,” Bailey explains. “This will wow your guests at the beginning of the party.” Most importantly, Bailey adds, “make sure you have the right lighting.” Candles create a warm, cozy ambience. “Pull it all together by choosing one color for your soirée and incorporate it through every detail.” Add some fabulous food and take-home trinkets and you’re good to go.

Set to Celebrate

Why wait for company? Fine tableware makes every meal memorable.

by DANIELLE COHEN

Ordering in? Chinese delivery has never been so romantic! Bringing in a prepared meal and serving it on a table set for royalty can elicit feelings of grandeur, impressing with very little effort. And don’t forget about your finer linens and accessories. Richly crafted napkins and holders, tablecloths, runners, centerpieces, chargers, candlesticks and the like can turn mundane morsels into a fabulous feast. So polish up those fancy forks, gorgeous glasses and precious plates and get ready to reinvent dining in your home. Enjoy your finer things more often and you just might find life becoming more entertaining.

China dishes, crystal stemware and silver flatware are too beautiful to be collecting dust in boxes or cabinets, waiting for that über-elegant, formal entertaining opportunity. Spice up a night in and bring out your best tableware, whether you’re expecting guests or just indulging yourself. A casual family-style function has the potential to be all the more memorable when the table enhances the mood. Likewise, a simple brunch can be transformed into a luxurious dining experience.

Mind Your Manners

Whether on land or at sea, there is no substitute for good table manners. While exhibiting proper behavior can impress, displaying ignorance can embarrass you and your table mates. However, dining among ladies and gents need not be a stressful ordeal. Just follow these table tips from manners maven Peggy Post, in Emily Post’s Etiquette (17th edition, 2004), and you will be well on your way to dining gracefully.

Dinner fork Charger or service plate Dinner knife Fish knife Soup spoon Oyster fork Butter plate Butter knife Water goblet Red wine glass White wine glass Champagne glass

• Utensils are placed in the order of use, from the outside in, toward the plate. Forks are placed to the left of the plate; knives and spoons are placed to the right.

Napkin Know-How

• The charger/service plate rests under the plate through the first courses; it is removed upon the entrée’s arrival.

Place your napkin in your lap as soon as you sit down to dine, keeping it folded in half at all times. Dab your lips throughout the meal; never wipe. To excuse yourself from the table during the meal and at its conclusion, lay your napkin in loose folds to the left of your plate.

• The butter plate is above your forks to the left of the place setting, with the butter knife resting diagonally on top of it.

Your Bread and Butter

• The salad knife is placed closest to the dinner plate on the right, with the dinner knife next on the right, followed by the fish knife.

Select one whole slice of bread from the basket; do not tear off a piece and return the remainder. To take butter from the communal stick, use your butter knife to scoop a small piece and then smear it onto the edge of your bread plate. Break one or two smaller pieces of bread at a time, butter each piece individually while it remains on your plate (not suspended in the air), and then consume it piecemeal. Do not take the last slice without first offering it to your dining companions.

Take a Rest

Do not place your flatware on the table after use; position implements diagonally on the edge of your plate so the tips of the knife and fork point to the plate’s center in an inverted V, signaling that you are not finished with your course. Indicate that your plate may be removed by laying your knife and fork side by side, diagonally, on your plate. They should be placed as though at the 4:20 position of a clock, with the tips facing inward.

• The soup and fruit spoons, if used, are to the right of the knives, followed by the oyster fork farther on the right. • Red or white wine and sherry glasses stand directly above the knives; behind them is the water goblet with the champagne glass, if used, to the right.

Origins of Inspiration

by ANTHEA TURNER

PHOTOS COURTESY OF JOHN HARDY

Inspired by their lives in Italy, Greece, Bali or New York City, these jewelry legends are intoxicated by nature and driven by passion. Here, Discover Style gives you the opportunity to meet these internationally known designers —up close and personal.

Above and below, the lush environment of John Hardy's base in Bali.

Guy Bedarida, above, is head of design and creative director for John Hardy.

Guy Bedarida

for John Hardy: Bali and Bracelets As head of design and creative director for John Hardy, Guy Bedarida finds inspiration in even a simple leaf from a bamboo tree. Modestly shrugging off his own eye for perfection and talent for design, Bedarida graciously praises the skilled Balinese artisans for their enthusiasm in creating jewelry as a form of worship. The company produces jewelry with a soul, thanks to Bedarida’s creative direction and his love for the Balinese people and landscape. Why is John Hardy based in Bali? Balinese people help define the brand because they are true artisans. The reason there is so much passion in the jewelry is because the Balinese people make the jewelry to offer it up to their gods. Where does your creative inspiration come from? From women and nature. I love to create jewelry that makes women feel beautiful and powerful. Jewelry can create a mood, a presence, an attitude. I love the challenge of being part of that impact. In nature, I am inspired by everything, but most of all, the greens—there is so much detail in leaves.

What is your secret indulgence? Balinese massage once a day How does John Hardy give back to the community? John Hardy teaches young Indonesian orphan children designing, carving and goldsmithing. After two years, they can do their own thing or the company will hire them as a part of the John Hardy family. What’s the most luxurious thing about your jewelry? Unique design and excellent technique What three items must be in your suitcase? Shoes, cashmere blanket and goose-down pillow What excites you most about the fall 2008 John Hardy collection? The Naga Collection: It symbolizes the life force that brings health and prosperity. The Naga collection is distinguished by rich textures and a play of contrasts, with alternating abstract patterns inspired by the dragon, mermaid tails, feathers and lace.

Judith Ripka An Eye for Detail

Judith Ripka’s award-winning designs represent a philosophy instilled by her mother: the appreciation of the beauty found in the finer details of life. Her latest collection is reflective of the contours and forms that can only be found while strolling the streets of Paris, lavish in opulent detail. What is the inspiration for your jewelry? Everything around me inspires me, from nature to architecture. The women who wear my jewelry serve as great inspiration to me. I still get a thrill when I walk down the street and see a woman wearing a piece I designed. Usually, I immediately start designing a piece to complement the one she’s wearing!

What is your favorite place to be when designing jewelry? I design when I’m inspired and that can be anywhere. My most recent collection was inspired by the architecture of Paris. The shapes and contours of the adornments on the buildings translated into the curves of new necklaces, bracelets and rings. The collection is very rich in color, texture and intricate design details.

Judith Ripka and granddaughters

What did you want to be when you were a kid? I have always known that I would be a jewelry designer and have always had an organic eye for design and color interpretation. My earliest memories are of playing with my mother’s jewelry box and accessorizing my clothing. My friends played with dolls or played sports. I accessorized; it was natural to me. My mother encouraged me to celebrate my individuality and to experiment creating beautiful things. What are your pastimes outside of jewelry design? I spend as much time with my family as possible. I have three grown sons and eight wonderful grandchildren. I take family vacations whenever possible.

David Yurman The Art of Evolution

Using creativity and artistry, David Yurman has the ability to transform the woman who wears his jewelry designs, while adapting to her personal style and taste. His inspiration comes from his wife, Sybil, as well as from different elements in nature like stone color and texture. What era inspires you most when you design jewelry? I’m inspired by the past, present and future—the concepts that surround each era of time both in my life and in history. I particularly draw insight from art history and its evolution. How does the David Yurman Humanitarian Foundation help the community? The Foundation gives time and resources to increase awareness and raise money for the arts, health organizations, children’s charities and the environment. If you weren’t a jewelry designer, what would you be? A sculptor. It was my first profession and still something I am very passionate about to this day. I sculpt frequently, and often jewelry designs are born from my sculptures. What are your favorite pastimes outside of jewelry design? I enjoy horseback riding, traveling and spending time with my family.

His enthusiasm for color is translated into vibrant, wearable art. What motivates you when designing? I look at jewelry as wearable art. I don’t look at the jewelry economically. I look at it for the beauty of it. What’s the most luxurious thing about your jewelry? Touching it and feeling it Who is your favorite clothing designer? Etro or Prada. I love colorful clothes. Isaac & Orna Levy of Yvel: People and Pearls

An award-winning jewelry designing team, Isaac and Orna Levy continue a family tradition in the pearl business when they started Yvel (Levy spelled backward). With magnificent passion, Isaac Levy describes his designs and inspiration by personifying the center of his creations: “A pearl is like a human being and has its own character. Putting a strand of pearls together is like putting a group of people together. When you get the right group, it just works.”

When and where are you inspired to design? Jogging. There is a chemical that is released that creates positive energy and that chemical is what gives me inspiration to design. Do you sketch your jewelry? There is not one single sketch of Yvel designs. The creations are in my head. It’s like the difference between reading a book and watching a movie. Books allow the imagination to run wild. I take what’s in my mind and what’s in my heart and sit with people to design it. There is no better sketch than your imagination. How long have you been married? Only 24 years. Only. Describe each other in one word: Orna describes Isaac as passionate; Isaac describes Orna as loyal. What is the Yvel Design Center? It’s in the hills of Jerusalem, built in one of the oldest wineries in Israel. It is 50,000 square feet comprising the school of art, a school for immigrant children, and an Yvel showroom.

Roberto Coin Gardens and Gold

Italian jewelry designer Roberto Coin embraces the values of the Italian traditions: to love life and live life and to always be happy. It is upon these values that he has based the philosophy of one of the most successful jewelry brands in the world. What do you like to do when you are not designing jewelry? Gardening in the hills of Vincenza. I never go to work without spending time in my garden and I never go to bed without seeing my garden. When you were a child, what did you want to be? I’m in love with the Italian creativity of fashion. I used to pass by a dress store every day of my life when I was 9. My first job was putting the cotton on the needle at the local dressmaking shop. What is your style? Changing style is my style. I love creating things all the time. I never know what’s next. What do you love about women? To be empowered, I surround myself with women because my success comes from women. What is your favorite vacation spot? As long as I am with my family, I don’t care. Tell us about your wife, Pilar. I am married to the eighth wonder of the world and have been married for 20 years.

In the Swim

Finding the bathing suit that suits you

“Swimsuits are like love: When the right one comes along, you know it,” says Lisa Dixon, senior designer at Jantzen Swimwear. Like a lasting romance, the ideal swimsuit is completely comfortable. Dixon recommends trying various labels, styles and sizes until you find "your perfect match." Here’s how to enhance your chances: • Hit the fitting room before buying. Stand up, sit down, and circle your arms and legs to be sure the suit doesn’t gap, ride up, or tug. • Style details can refine your figure. Try a flippy skirt or “boy shorts” for hip and thigh disguise. Spotlight your décolletage with a halter, v-neck, or surplice wrap; a high neck can minimize your bust. Control panels or shirring across the abdomen flattens the tummy. Diagonal wraps or curved seams create an hourglass waist. • Some one-piece styles aim for customized fit by offering a long, regular, or short torso, and some suits are sold in a range of cup sizes. • Keep your pool game going by opting for the suit’s matching cover-up. “Sarongs are tropical, but tunics are more versatile,” says Dixon. • To stay in the swim, rinse and air-dry your suit after every wearing. What’s the look of love for 2009? Brazilian designers recommend a trend or two. The Poko Pano label is print-crazy, with giraffe spots, Op Art geometrics and Polynesian florals. ANK by Mirla Sabino flaunts the glamorous “pinup girl” look, with retro touches like stripes, polka dots and black-and-white combos. Jump in!

(life style) Traveling in pursuit of happiness has ancient roots, and it’s a concept that more people are incorporating into their itineraries as they seek meaningful experiences beyond the pages of a guidebook. Rainer Jenss, vice president and publisher of National Geographic Kids is one such traveler. In spring of 2008, he and his wife sold their home in preparation for a yearlong, round-the-world trip for themselves and their two sons, ages 8 and 11. Their trip, which began in July 2008, fulfills a desire to comprehend the world in an organic and personal way. “For this trip, I want to let go of any preconceived notions of how things should be,” he says. “That philosophy is an important part of this trip. We want to be in the moment and be open to what will happen.”

The beach is just the beginning on Antigua and Barbuda, also known for a beautiful climate, well-preserved historic military forts and great houses, a melting pot of dining options, vibrant nightlife and the friendliest locals. Located in the Eastern Caribbean at the northern end of the Lesser Antilles, this twin-island state offers a variety of choices: taking a day trip to Barbuda’s Frigate Bird Sanctuary, soaking up local customs at a cultural festival, attending a world-class sailing regatta or other major sporting event, swimming with the stingrays, or diving the crystalclear waters. www.antigua-barbuda.org.

Thinking like that is what drives people to books such as 1,000 Places to See Before You Die by Patricia Schultz. The author believes a journey that contains a spiritual intention— whether it’s to learn more about other people or yourself—can provide one of the most profound opportunities one can hope for. “It’s that experience of wanting to understand better the condition of the world that moves you beyond the places that are picturepostcard perfect,” Schultz says. “The reward that comes with this has no price tag and is invaluable in ways you might not understand for many years.”

Vintage Vuitton For more than 150 years—from the day a young packing-case maker set up his own shop to create bags to transport belongings in comfort and style—the name Louis Vuitton has been synonymous with chic luxury. Five generations of Vuittons have led the company since Louis Vuitton founded it in 1854, and each has handed down to the next a belief in the importance of craftsmanship. Vuitton’s sense of style and quality has always attracted the famous and the powerful. France’s Empress Eugénie discovered Louis Vuitton in the 1850s, and the great conductor Leopold Stokowski traveled with a Vuitton desk-trunk. Vuitton baggage was part of the carmaker Citroën’s celebrated journeys across Africa in 1924 and Central Asia in 1931, and Sir Edmund Hillary packed his valuables in Vuitton for the historic ascent of Mount Everest in 1953.

carrying on a tradition 1821 Louis Vuitton is born in FrancheComte, near Switzerland. The son of a joiner, he learns his father’s trade and goes to Paris at age 14 to seek his fortune. He becomes apprentice to a Paris packing-case maker in 1837. 1854 Louis marries and starts his own company. Products are upholstered not in the traditional leather but in coated canvas, which is both tougher and fully waterproof. 1858 The company introduces its first signature trunk, made of poplar and fitted with black lacquered metal corners, brackets, handles and crosspieces and with riveted beechwood laths. It is filled with compartments for organizing personal belongings. 1860 The company opens a workshop in Asnières, a suburb of Paris. Today, the shop is still in operation and features a museum of travel and luggage. 1897 Louis’ son, Georges, registers the signature Monogram that still is the unmistakable mark of Louis Vuitton. The Monogram is used only on hard baggage until 1959, when a new chemical process enables soft bags to be waterproofed while remaining pliable. 1924 The Keepall is the company’s first soft bag and the first item meant to be kept with the traveler rather than stowed with baggage. It remains popular today. 1987 Vuitton merges with Moët & Hennessy to become the LVMH group, the most powerful group in international luxury.

For more than a century, Louis Vuitton luggage has helped travelers see the world in luxurious style.

1997 Marc Jacobs is named artistic director of Louis Vuitton, heralding the company’s entry into the world of fashion. The rising-star designer oversees development of ready-to-wear, footwear and jewelry, and contributes to the development of new leather goods. 1998 The company opens its first two global stores, on the Champs-Elysées in Paris and on New Bond Street in London. Today Louis Vuitton operates more than 300 proprietary stores around the world, offering an array of fine leather goods and fashions to a discerning global customer base.
