When looking at his beautiful still-life photography, you’d never guess that Los Angeles native Ed Fernandez’s first camera purchase was not made until he was 25 years old. Today, Ed travels back and forth between his Miami studio—a 1922 Key West-style house that he restored—and New York City, freelancing for clients like Godiva, Dillard’s and Dayton Hudson. welcome letter Let me be among the first to welcome you to Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino. We are so glad you chose to stay with us—here in the middle of all the action. We have so much exciting news to share in this latest issue of Planet Hollywood magazine. First, let me start by introducing our new president and chief executive officer Tom McCartney. He’s our man on the property helping to ensure your stay with us is the best possible. We could not be more pleased to have him directing us as we move forward. Tom comes to us with more than 25 years of impeccable experience in the resort industry, with a strong background of success here in Las Vegas. His expertise will further strengthen our position on the Strip in the years to come.

Photo of Mike Mecca to come

Now let’s talk entertainment. In the past few months we’ve added new shows and attractions that we’re very proud of. We have opened a fabulous adult revue called Peepshow with the very talented Jerry Mitchell, a Tony Award-winning director and choreographer at the helm. Equally talented members of the team are set designer David Rockwell and Gregg Barnes, who created the cast’s stunning costumes. Be sure to catch it while you’re here. We have also brought in the wonderfully funny, critically acclaimed dinner show Tony n' Tina’s Wedding but, of course, we added our own special twist: a celebrity party guest. And what I can I say about this next guy, who is a dear friend and terrific actor? Jason Statham, who graces the cover of this issue, is a hardworking talented actor who has been in a number of great movies including the Crank and Transporter films. We’re happy not only to have him front and center on our magazine, but to be working closely with him in an upcoming action film we’re producing called The Expendables. Written, directed and starring Sylvester Stallone, the movie also features several other fine actors including Mickey Rourke, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jet Li. We are also preparing for our biggest unveiling of 2009—the PH Towers by Westgate. By year’s end the 52-story luxury tower will be open. It’s a true marvel and architectural gem. Enjoy your stay and please feel free to take your Planet Hollywood magazine home with you. All the best,

Robert Earl

For anyone who has ever fantasized about being in show business, here is the opportunity to live out that dream as audience members step into the role of guests at the nuptials and wedding reception of Tina Vitale and Tony Nunzio. For two hours at Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino, guests enjoy hilarious interaction with the bride and groom and members of their boozing, brawling families. This is improvisation at its best, which is why Tony n' Tina's Wedding is the second-longest running show in off-Broadway history. Tony and Tina have walked down the aisle more than 2,000 times in front of more than 450,000 guests during its seven-year run in Las Vegas alone, and still every wedding is a one-of-a-kind experience. The evening offers lots of laughs, an Italian buffet dinner with champagne and the chance to shake it on the dance floor and participate in a conga line. Guests even receive a souvenir photo to remember the evening. The show began in New York City 21 years ago, yet it takes place in the current day, which keeps it fresh and relevant. “We’ve updated the costumes and music to suit Planet Hollywood’s younger, hipper crowd and replaced standards like Sinatra’s “Fly Me to the Moon” with more upbeat music from artists like Fergie,” says Larry Pellegrini, the show’s original director and one of its co-creators. But this version comes with a twist from the mind of Robert Earl co-chairman of Planet Hollywood

8

by Marsala rypka ty!

Wedding Par

Resort & Casino who, says Pellegrini, “suggested we bring in a variety of celebrity wedding crashers which fits their Hollywood theme. So far we’ve had wrestler Rowdy Roddy Piper, [singer] Tiffany, Barry Williams from The Brady Bunch and Kato Kaelin. Each celebrity crasher plays themself and has a back story that connects them to the show so it makes sense why they are there.” Kaelin makes an appearance as an old friend of the Nunzio family. “I was Tony’s houseguest in Brooklyn while I auditioned for soap operas, long before I was O.J.’s houseguest,” Kaelin explains of the connection. “I talk with people, make jokes, sit in their lap and invite them to dance.” Kaelin says he had fun with the role and improvising on the go as guests referenced his past. “One night someone shouted, ‘Did he do it?’ and I shouted back, ‘Yes, he did it. Tony got married.’” The fast-moving show which spoofs the union of two colorful Italian families is like a three-ring circus, complete with arguments between the bride and groom and their relatives; toasts made by the best man and maid-of-honor that will have you in stitches; and even Tony smashing a piece of wedding cake into Tina’s face. There’s also lots of hugging. “I’ve taught the cast to be Italian, to embrace a person in a meaningful way, rather than just being funny,” says Pellegrini.

“People enjoy a wide range of emotions throughout the play. Connie, the eight-month-pregnant maid of honor, will ask people about their kids as well as advice about what to do for swollen ankles.” So here’s to Tony and Tina’s everlasting love and to the wedding guests who share in their happiness…every night. Bada bing, bada boom!

“This new, breathtaking tower has already changed the landscape of the Las Vegas Strip.” —Robert Earl, Co-Chairman of Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino.

The Sleek PH Towers Soar Over The Las Vegas Strip With its brilliant blue glass façade and ultra-modern look, PH Towers: A Westgate Resort is making a bold statement with the grand opening of the first 52-story tower: a stunning creation that forever changed the skyline of Las Vegas and the way of life at Planet Hollywood. Suites at PH Towers range in size from approximately 400 to 2,000 square feet, accommodations from studios to four bedrooms, each fully furnished in a striking modern style that includes Italian leather sectional couches, king-size beds, home theaters with high-definition flat-panel televisions, and marble bathrooms. Picture windows offer spectacular views of the neon lights up and down the Las Vegas Strip. While units at PH Towers are being offered for vacation ownership purchase, Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino is also actively booking guests into these stylish and luxurious rooms. In addition to the stately rooms, the lobby of PH Towers overlooks an exotic tropical pool complete with sandy beach and private cabanas. The ground level, which also includes a lobby bar and coffee shop, connects directly with the 170 specialty stores and 15 restaurants inside the world-famous Miracle Mile Shops. A short stroll through the mall leads you to Planet Hollywood’s casino, three acres of excitement with slot machines and table games, a large poker room and a state-of-the-art race and sports book. Theaters in Miracle Mile Shops and in Planet Hollywood offer a wide range of entertainment as well. The debut of the first of the two towers marks a successful milestone in a unique venture between Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino and Westgate Resorts, the world’s largest privately held timeshare company. As the first vacation ownership resort to be fully integrated with a major hotel and casino complex, it offers owners and hotel guests staying at PH Towers access to all the amenities at the resort: the action-packed casino, gourmet restaurants, top-notch convention facilities and, of course, Miracle Mile Shops.

The topping off ceremony of the first tower was attended by Nevada Gov. Jim Gibbons, Westgate CEO David Siegel and Planet Hollywood Co-Chairman Robert Earl (top photo), as well as actor Sylvester Stallone (above).

“With the enormous success of Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino, we are excited to take the show to new heights and we are thrilled to introduce PH Towers,” said Robert Earl, Co-Chairman of Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino. “This new, breathtaking tower has already changed the landscape of the Las Vegas Strip and I cannot wait until we have the grand opening of the Towers so we can start welcoming guests into this new, beautiful building. It is the perfect extension of the Planet Hollywood brand; gorgeous suites, an incredible pool area and a luxurious resort feeling that is certain to impress and delight our guests.”

Reservations for PH Towers are being accepted and can be made by visiting the website at www.phtowers.com, or by calling toll free at 1-877-90-TOWER (86937). Guests are invited to experience life on the other side of the Planet, in the hottest new hotel rooms on the strip. As the first addition to the Planet Hollywood Brand, guests will encounter a new standard luxury, amenities and accommodations, setting a new bar for its competitors. Palestinian-American Shami came to the United States in 1965 and says he is living the American dream. His company, which produces the CHI and BioSilk hair-care brands, is moving production from South Korea and China to Houston, where he built a CHI USA manufacturing plant. Shami hopes other businesses will do the same to help strengthen the American economy. “I challenge everyone to do their part to buy or produce goods in the USA, then it won’t be long before America prevails,” Shami says. Founded in 1986, Farouk Systems has revolutionized the hair-care industry. Shami’s company invented the ammonia-free highlighting and color system, SunGlitz, and was the first to incorporate silk into hair-care products with its BioSilk line. The CHI brand is certainly no stranger to American consumers; the popular product line has been the official hair sponsor of the 2008 and 2009 Miss USA Pageant competitions, both held at Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino.

Las Vegas has been featured in hundreds of moVies. here are a few of our faVorite Lines from those cLassic fiLms.

Swingers Trent (Vince Vaughn): They’re gonna give daddy the Rainman suite, you dig that? Mike (Jon Favreau): Do you think we’ll get there by midnight? Trent: Baby, we’re going to be up five hundy by midnight! Mike: Yeeeeaaaaahhhhhh! Trent: Vegas baby! Vegas! Mike: Vegas!

Fools Rush In Tracey (Beth Broderick): Well nobody ever plans to end up in Vegas. You just do. Kinda sneaks up on you.

21 Jill Taylor (played by Kate Bosworth, right): You know what I like most about Las Vegas? You can be whoever you want to be.

Oceans 11 Rusty (Brad Pitt): Shane, you’ve got three pairs. You can’t have six cards! You can’t have six cards in a five-card game!

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas Raoul Duke (Johnny Depp): There was madness in any direction, at any hour. You could strike sparks anywhere. There was a fantastic universal sense that whatever we were doing was right, that we were winning.

Casino

Hollywood loves Las Vegas. The neon. The energy. The unpredictability of it all. What’s not to love? It’s like a quickie drive-thru marriage chapel. The crews come in, film their footage and race back across the desert or as Raoul Duke (played by Johnny Depp, above) in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas describes the journey home: “There was only one road back to L.A.—U.S. Interstate 15. Just a flat-out high speed burn through Baker and Barstow and Berdoo. Then onto the Hollywood Freeway, and straight on into frantic oblivion. Safety. Obscurity.” Only difference here, we’re left with these memorable lines. Race to Witch Mountain [when two Star Wars Imperial Stormtroopers enter his cab] Radio: Hey Jack, the UFO convention is in town. Jack Bruno (played by Dwayne Johnson, left): I hadn’t noticed. Stormtrooper: Take us to your Planet…Hollywood!

16

Nicky Santoro (played by Joe Pesci, right, with Robert De Niro): A lot of holes in the desert, and a lot of problems are buried in those holes. But you gotta do it right. I mean, you gotta have the hole already dug before you show up with a package in the trunk. Otherwise, you’re talking about a halfhour to forty-five minutes worth of digging. And who knows who’s gonna come along in that time? Pretty soon, you gotta dig a few more holes.

Knocked Up Pete (Paul Rudd): Just don’t ask me to lend you any money. Ben Stone (Seth Rogen): Can I just—have some?

Lucky You L.C. Cheever (played by Robert Duvall, right, with Eric Bana): You got it backwards kid. You play cards the way you should lead your life. And you lead your life the way you should play cards.

Rain Man Charlie (Tom Cruise): Now casinos have house rules: they don’t like to lose. So you never show that you’re counting cards. That is the cardinal sin, Ray. Raymond (Dustin Hoffman): Counting cards is bad. Charlie: Yes. Raymond: I like to drive slow on the driveway. Charlie: If you get this right, Ray, you can drive anywhere you want as slow as you want.

What Happens in Vegas Jack Fuller (played by Ashton Kutcher, right): We got robbed. All they took was the door.

by shep morgan The last time Dennis Quaid played a general, he was defending the Alamo as Sam Houston. Now, he’s a cartoon commander in the live-action version of the popular comic book and 1960s television series G.I. Joe. As the iconic General Hawk in G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, Quaid leads an elite military unit facing an evil organization headed by a notorious drug dealer. Meanwhile, Quaid, 55, recently collected kudos as the 2009 ShoWest Male Star of the Year in Las Vegas. Off-screen, after his divorce from Meg Ryan in 1991 (the couple had one son), Quaid remarried and became the father of twins. After a mix-up in medication at a Los Angeles hospital, the babies faced a near tragedy but survived amid an outpouring of goodwill from their father’s fans. Following pressure from Quaid, the hospital implemented a barcode system that detects when an improper dose or medication is administered.

Recently honored at ShoWest as the 2009 Male Star of the Year, Dennis Quaid says his portrayal of General Hawk in G.I. Joe is a cross between Chuck Yeager and Hugh Hefner.

“I lived out a lot of childhood fantasies from playing a firefighter, an astronaut, and a famous cowboy, to a star football and baseball player. That’s what is so great about my job.”

18

Dennis QuaiD gets buff for his role in G.I. Joe anD talks acting, action figures anD airplanes.

What did it take to get ready to play General Hawk? The prep is to get buff because you can never be too buff. That’s about it, and also watch a lot of cartoons. It was fun because they added stuff like my Aide de Camp being played by a Victoria’s Secret supermodel, Karolina Kurkova. That definitely wasn’t in the original. I loved the G.I. Joe series, but the General was basically a Ken doll in an army uniform. The way I play him, he’s a cross between Chuck Yeager and, maybe, a naïve Hugh Hefner. The role got you an action figure too. It’s my second. The first for Dragonheart is buried in the attic somewhere with the rest of my oldest son’s toys. Either that or it wound up getting melted or something. It is kind of fun when you see your kids playing with them. You went through some tough times but now your career seems stronger than ever. I cleaned my life up after my substance abuse problems and took a couple of years off while Meg was becoming a star. When I came back I found out it wasn’t so easy to pick up where I left off. It’s taken more than a few years but I think things are finally coming to fruition. Along the way, I lived out a lot of childhood fantasies from playing a firefighter, an astronaut and a famous cowboy, to a star football and baseball player. That’s what is so great about my job. What do you do for fun when you’re not working? Play golf or ride my horse. That’s basically my day. Do you ever get bored? No, I’m really a creature of habit. But when I do something I’m obsessive about it. When I find something I really like, I stick with it. I love to fly my jet. The biggest perk is not having to worry about airport security and losing luggage. It’s really convenient. How are the twins? They’re doing fantastic. They’re completely healthy and happy and suffered no lasting ill effects from what happened to them in the hospital. I’m really grateful about that. And you’ve taken some action to make sure it doesn’t happen to other babies. We’ve created a system that would minimize the impact of human error in the hospitals…I think it could make a huge difference. So if there’s any good that comes out of what we went through, it’s to get out there and raise public awareness.

outtakes Extra’s snEak PEEP Planet Hollywood is at tHe center of entertainment news in las Vegas

by steVe weiser, extra’s las Vegas bureau cHief EXTRA and Planet Hollywood have been a team since the early conception of Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino. I recall the first time I sat down with owner Robert Earl and discussed bringing our two great brands together. I had many questions, like, “How would a national syndicated television show like EXTRA benefit from a Las Vegas resort and casino?” Or, “How could Planet Hollywood justify the stories needed to produce a daily news magazine show from The Strip?”

extra! extra!

Yes, I had many questions, but Mr. Earl had more answers. He spoke of Hollywood-style press events, A-list movie premieres and promised more celebrity-driven news than I could fit into my half-hour show. It is safe to say, he had all the right answers. Every time I think the hotel content has peaked, I am humbled again. The latest awe-inspiring venture to come to Planet Hollywood is Peepshow, and it brought a provocative new level of sin to Sin City. Peepshow's grand opening weekend was a star-studded event. Of course, the stars opening the sexy hit show—Mel B and Kelly Monaco—were there, but there was plenty of other star power in attendance. Charlie Sheen the star of Two and a Half Men, was in the audience, along with his wife Brooke Mueller Sheen. Lindsay Lohan made a surprise appearance that had everyone talking. The rumor mill was churning with talk that Lohan would perhaps be joining Peepshow. The show went off without a hitch. After the performance you could hear the buzz. Peepshow was a hit! A relationship that started out with many questions, turned out to be the answer my show was looking for. In the past three years, EXTRA and Planet Hollywood have delivered over 190 stories, all shot or produced from this one-of-a-kind luxury resort in Las Vegas.

I recently ran into Mr. Earl a few weeks after the Grand Opening of Peepshow. I was in town for the Ricky Hatton-Manny Pacquiao bout and EXTRA’s Mario Lopez was hosting the after party at PrivÊ. Just when I thought the night was coming to a close, I noticed Mr. Earl at the table next to us. Joining him was Diddy and Russell Brand, and in that moment, I knew my next A-list story for EXTRA would be coming soon.

That story opens with a timid and reserved Bo Peep slinking around the stage in a nightie, clutching a book of nursery rhymes. The mistress of ceremonies, The Peep Diva, then arrives and guides her through an imaginary world on a journey of self-discovery. In her search for love, Bo Peep crosses paths with the characters of several well known tales who show her how to flaunt her sexuality—there are scenes that involve stripper poles, a swinging saddle, beds and bathtubs. By the end of the show, Bo Peep is a confident woman strutting around the stage in lacy undergarments (and a lot less). Peepshow will feature celebrity guest stars to play the main roles. The show opened with Spice Girl Mel B as The Peep Diva, and Dancing with the Stars winner Kelly Monaco as Bo Peep. Actress, model and reality star Holly Madison later took over the Bo Peep role from Monaco.

CoCktail ClassiCs Your Favorite Drinks From unForgettable Films by Caleb brooks

1 Cocktail:

Vesper

Nomination: Best Comeback Starring in: Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace While over the years James Bond, that paragon of cool, has quaffed many different drinks in his films, the Vesper martini—named for his love interest in the 1953 Ian Fleming novel Casino Royale—only appeared recently in the Bond flicks, but has quickly captured a loyal following. And why not? Who better than James Bond to show us how to do it with style and taste. Where to Drink: Heart Bar Producer’s Notes: The recipe below is the same one James Bond imbibed onscreen (played most recently by Daniel Craig, below), however the bartender at Heart Bar suggests using dry vermouth in place of Lillet (a wine-based tonic) to make it “just as tasty and strong. And of course it will be shaken, not stirred.” —Robert

Recipe: 3 oz. Gordon’s Gin 1 oz. Vodka 1/ oz. Kina Lillet 2 Lemon peel for garnish

“A dry martini,” [Bond] said. “One. In a deep champagne goblet.” “Oui, monsieur.” “Just a moment. Three measures of Gordon’s, one of vodka, half a measure of Kina Lillet. Shake it very well until it’s ice-cold, then add a large thin slice of lemon peel. Got it?” “Certainly, monsieur.” The barman seemed pleased with the idea. —From the novel Casino Royale by Ian Fleming

2 Cocktail:

The Flirtini

Nomination: Best Female Supporting Role Starring in: Sex and the City You probably expected to see the pretty-in-pink Cosmopolitan winning this category, right? We’re just as fond of this delicious combination, also sipped with style by Carrie Bradshaw (portrayed by Sarah Jessica Parker, above) and friends. Where to Drink: While gossiping at the EXTRA Lounge Producer’s Notes: “I love these so much!” —Megan Recipe: 1 oz. Grey Goose L’Orange vodka 2 oz. Champagne 2 oz. Pineapple juice Serve chilled in a martini glass.

Raise a Glass

With all eyes on you, dressed to the nines and exuding red-carpet appeal and charisma, you sidle up to the bar ready to relax with a cocktail, but what to order? Certainly the typical just won’t do on this auspicious occasion. You need something special. Something with star quality. Something that says Planet Hollywood. So what will it be? Allow us, and the producers*—the bartenders who mix it all up—to announce our nominees for best-supporting cocktail in a film.

*“Producers” quoted below serve as bartenders and wait staff at the Heart Bar and EXTRA Lounge.

3 Cocktail:

5 Cocktail:

Champagne Cocktail

Nomination: Best Cameo Starring In: Casablanca

Nomination: Best Male Supporting Role Starring in: The Big Lebowski While not the flashiest of cocktails, like The Dude himself (portrayed by Jeff Bridges, above), this creamy concoction is super easy to stomach. Relaxed and ready for any inactivity, the White Russian is perfect while catching some rays or in the limo out on the town. Where to Drink: The Pool Producer’s Notes: “I have definitely heard The Dude quoted here. Mainly the ‘Hey-hey-hey. Careful, man, there’s a beverage here!’ line.” —Marcus Recipe: 2 oz. Vodka 1 oz. Kahlúa Pour over ice in a rocks glass and fill with cream.

Nomination: Lifetime Achievement Award Starring in: Too many to count! The drink most associated with our fathers and grandfathers. It’s an acquired taste meant for the hardiest of souls. Where to Drink: The Playing Field Lounge Producer’s Notes: “Whenever someone orders scotch, I think of Will Ferrell (pictured above) in Anchorman; ‘I love scotch. Scotchy, scotch, scotch. Here it goes, down in my belly.’” —Jill Recipe: Pour over ice and serve.

A classic in every sense of the word. This was the drink Humphrey Bogart made for Ingrid Bergman, (inset, above) for what is arguably the most famous toast in movie history. Where to Drink: Tony n’ Tina’s Wedding Producer’s Notes: Actually, we’ll let Bogart finish this with the quote we just alluded to above, “Here’s looking at you, kid.” Recipe: Small amount of sugar in a champagne glass Add a couple drops of Angostura bitters 1 oz. Brandy Fill with champagne Garnish with maraschino cherry.

Cantina Culture Yolös Mexican Grill: Full oF Flair, Flavor and Fun

Described by some as a “glamorous Mexican playground,” Yolös Mexican Grill prides itself on being a modern tribute to south-of-the-border culture. Steeped in color, ritual and adornment, the bold Jeffrey Beers-designed space is a festive cantina brimming with authentic tried-and-true Mexican dishes. Every Friday and Saturday evening is AIRE Latin Late Nights at Yolös. Starting at 10 p.m., DJ Ella and friends spin for “Pop Y Rock en Español and Electronica Y Mas.”

28

Chefs at Yolös take liberties with some traditional Mexican favorites, adding a little international flair by using ingredients and fusing cooking styles synonymous with Pacific Rim, South American and Caribbean cuisine. The menu includes chicken tinga enchiladas made with a Ranchera guajillo sauce, Oaxacan cheese and cabbage citrus slaw; Mexican gulf shrimp marinated in a citrus and chile broth; and a carne asada entrée served with sweet corn tamale and fried plantains. As for cocktails, Yolös, of course, specializes in tequila and margaritas. The restaurant carries more than 60 different boutique tequilas, sells “flights” (small sipping samples) for those who want to taste the various types of tequilas, and serves a variety of fresh-fruit-blended margaritas. Yolös’ most popular margarita is its Cadillac version made with 100-percent blue agave Cazadores Blanco, fresh sour mix and a float of Grand Marnier, which gives the cocktail a smoother and fruitier finish.

Place the strawberries and three of the lime wedges into a cocktail shaker. Muddle (grind) the ingredients until pulverized. Fill the shaker halfway with crushed ice. Add Brazilian Cachaça and rock candy syrup. Shake vigorously. Pour shaker contents into sugar-rimmed glass and garnish with remaining lime wedge.

Bon Appétit! Buca di Beppo puts a Fresh New spiN oN old-world italiaN recipes by Rob WiseR

The whimsical décor, festive atmosphere and “everyone is family” attitude of Buca di Beppo have made it one of the most popular Italian restaurant franchises in America, with 88 locations spanning from Albany to Honolulu with one location just off the Las Vegas Strip. Now, the iconic brand is being re-energized and refreshed under the leadership of Robert Earl, founder and CEO of Planet Hollywood International, Inc., which acquired the franchise last year. A pioneer in the development of theme restaurants dating back to the 1970s, Earl founded the Planet Hollywood brand in 1991, partnering with some of Hollywood’s biggest stars to take the concept of theme dining to glamorous new heights.

Upon purchasing the chain of restaurants, Robert Earl (right) tweaked the menu adding a number of new mouth-watering dishes. Below: Sylvester Stallone, Charlie Sheen and Danny DeVito stop by a Buca di Beppo restaurant.

Upon taking charge of the Buca brand, Earl began making immediate enhancements to its restaurants, which now feature a number of new dishes with freshly-made sauces. Red Marinara, creamy Alfredo and meaty Bolognese are prepared daily in Buca’s bustling kitchens, where the emphasis is on homemade flavor. While longtime fans of Buca di Beppo have been thrilled by the new offerings, Earl isn’t tampering with the key ingredients that have made this franchise a unique success: namely, the casual, family-style atmosphere and commitment to delivering memorable meals—based on recipes enjoyed for generations in villages throughout Italy. When you come, bring your appetite. Italian favorites, such as cheese manicotti, baked rigatoni and eggplant parmigiana, come in two portion sizes, which are both generous: Buca Small, which feeds two to three people, and Buca Large, capable of satisfying four to six appetites. “I am very proud of our new menu,” says Earl of the added offerings which include prosciutto-stuffed chicken, Chianti-braised short ribs and chicken carbonara. “These new items emphasize our commitment to deliver the freshest and highest-quality dishes, while making our guests feel as if they are having a home-cooked meal in a family-style setting.”

When you visit Buca di Beppo bring your appetite. These Italian dishes come in generous portions. 30

Punk rock icon Iggy Pop has said that celebrated photographer Olaf Heine “is blessed with a clear and inescapable German eye. You better run, or fight back.” And judging from the image of him—shirtless and with wraps on his hands—the rocker was ready for a brawl when the two met. The cover art for Heine’s first book of photography, Leaving the Comfort Zone: Photographs 1991–2008, is a bewildering, near mug shot, image of Iggy Pop standing against a block wall. Heine’s other photographs, compiled in this collection, are just as simple, yet telling, in the way he captures the emotion of his subjects. Jon Bon Jovi is pictured looking over his shoulder, draped in an American flag, while Sting is bound in ropes with a piece of tape covering his mouth—just two of the more than 100 photographs featured in the book. “I let the artists slip into a variety of roles. I like to capture something new, something unique. A fresh side that hopefully people haven’t seen before,” Heine explains, saying that his portraits bring out the sensitive and vulnerable sides of his subjects. His portfolio of images includes musicians and actors such as Willie Nelson, Lou Reed, Jared Leto, Coldplay, Salma Hayek and Depeche Mode.

Photographer Olaf Heine (right with camera) has built a reputation among celebrities such as Sting (left) and Iggy Pop (right) as an easygoing, fun-loving portrait photographer.

looking to get lucky in vegas? “the Most Beautiful tattoo studio in the world” awaits

Chester Bennington is known for his hit songs with his band Linkin Park, including “What I’ve Done” (which is featured on the Transformers soundtrack) and “In the End.” But the 33-year-old singer is branching out. He made cameos in the 2006 film Crank, starring Jason Statham, and the sequel, Crank 2: High Voltage, in which his song “Given Up” is featured. Now he’s leaving his mark in Las Vegas with Club Tattoo inside Miracle Mile Shops at Planet Hollywood.

It’s the fifth in the Club Tattoo chain and the first location outside of Arizona, where Bennington teamed with former band mate Sean Dowdell in 1995 to open a shop in Tempe. The Vegas store, which Bennington calls “the most beautiful tattoo studio in the world,” has both a public area and private rooms and does piercings, in addition to tattoos. Planet Hollywood magazine recently caught up with Bennington to talk shop.

What’s your advice for someone considering their first tattoo? Be very thoughtful. Don’t rush into it. You have it for a lifetime. [The tattoo artists] take their jobs very seriously and the more meaning and more thoughtfulness there is behind an idea, the more passionate the artist is about it. When you get a tattoo you earn a rite of passage. It’s very symbolic in a way. And addictive. Once you get one, you get two. And two leads to twenty.

When did you know Club Tattoo was going to be a success? We knew right from the beginning we had something special. We really set the bar pretty high in terms of the tattoo industry, just in our region, and slowly over time—the last fourteen years—we basically created our own little empire down in the southwest. So what made you decide to open in Las Vegas? We were thinking about moving to New York or London or Tokyo but we decided that Las Vegas would be a good place to go because everyone from all over the world comes here.

The chain offers tattoos, piercings, clothing and body jewelry.

The store doesn’t look like a typical tattoo studio. The aesthetic is important and it’s appealing to both male and female customers. All of our stores look more like a day spa, mixed in a cool lifestyle clothing store that offers fashion, jewelry and accessories. Its Vegas, you have to be bigger and better. How many tattoos do you have? I don’t even know. My back is covered. My arms are going to be sleeves soon. I got some on my legs. As long as there is skin, there’s potential for another one. I think my flame tattoos are more famous than my face. I’m fine with that. It basically became my trademark. Is there one tattoo that means more to you than the others? I have all of my children and my wife on my chest in a banner with a rose over my heart and that’s the most meaningful to me. The rest are just because I think they’re cool.

Club Tattoo opened its fifth location—but first outside Arizona—in Miracle Mile Shops at Planet Hollywood earlier this year. At right: Owners Sean Dowdell, Chester Bennington and Thora Dowdell.

DC ShoeS Things are already looking up for global action-sports brand DC, a subsidiary of Quiksilver, Inc. That’s because the new Las Vegas flagship store, keeping in sync with its sister West Coast stores and the company’s skateboarding lineage, has visitors training their eyes on the ceiling and the inverted “vert” ramp—a kind of half-pipe for skateboarders—attached to it. The eye candy doesn’t end there. A variety of large-format photographs, depicting the company’s world-class team of professional skateboarding, snowboarding, surfing, BMX and motocross athletes, pump some adrenaline into the space. While seasonal snow products, such as boots, boards and outerwear, will arrive later in the year, the Miracle Mile Shops store now has DC’s men’s and women’s apparel, footwear and accessories as well as DC’s Skateboarding and LIFE collections. With two successful film franchises—Crank and Transporter—to his credit, Jason Statham gears up to star in The Expendables with his idol Sylvester Stallone.

When Jason Statham put the pedal to the metal in Transporter he launched his career as a lean, mean, fighting machine destined to become a great Hollywood action hero. Statham, who recently trashed some very expensive turbo-charged cars in hair-raising chase scenes in Transporter 3, also scored at the box office in Crank playing a guy injected with a poison that would kill him if he didn’t keep his adrenaline flowing. Most recently, Statham returned as Chev Chelios in Crank: High Voltage and is now filming in Brazil where he’s living out a dream—co-starring with his childhood hero Sylvester Stallone in The Expendables.

The handsome Londoner, whose stoic tough-asnails aura is tempered by a devilishly self-deprecating sense of humor, has been something of a legend for leaving his stunt double on the sidelines when the action gets dicey. “I sort of dug my own grave there,” he reveals. “It was stupid for me to say years ago, ‘I’ll do all my own stunts.’ Then it became, ‘Oh, dear. I suppose I’ve got to do it again.’ Now I do have to keep proving to myself and the audience that it really is me. My worst moment was on Crank, when I was hanging from a helicopter at 3,000 feet over downtown L.A. with just a couple of safety lines. I was shaking a bit and just hoping that the camera angles would prove it wasn’t a special effect.” And when it comes to kicking and punching Statham, who went mano a mano with Jet Li in War, takes his skill as a martial artist very seriously. “I work to keep fit,” he says. “My father was a boxer and I’ve done kickboxing for a long time and also a lot of jujitsu. I sometimes train with [British director] Guy Ritchie who gave me my start as a film actor.” Then Statham adds with a laugh, “Actually, when I was a kid, my older brother was into martial arts and he was a big fan of Bruce Lee. Unfortunately, he practiced a lot on me, so I got bashed up from an early age.”

Dives Into Acting In fact, Statham has always been an athlete. He was a highly-ranked diver with Olympic potential who competed on the British National Team while making ends meet selling costume jewelry to tourists on the streets of London. He later became a fashion model, and when Ritchie spotted his picture in a magazine and cast him in Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, the door was opened to a big-screen career. Statham remembers with a shrug, “I didn’t punch anybody in that movie but I was playing a tough guy. I guess that’s how people want to see me.” How tough is he? “People do wonder if I could kill somebody,” Statham deadpans. “I know my mum could because she’s really good with a frying pan. Actually, the thought of it makes me rather queasy. But I know some lethal tricks. I could show a girl how to put a stranglehold on a guy and, basically, stop his blood supply. You pass out and the next thing you know, as we say in London, ‘You’re brown bread.’” “But killing people on the screen is make-believe even though you want to make it seem as real as possible,” he adds. “I grew up watching action legends who you really believe are doing all that stuff. Arnold [Schwarzenegger] and Bruce Willis always used to put themselves in the middle of things and so did Jet Li and Jackie Chan. They all inspired me, especially Stallone, who is among the best.” That is why co-starring with his idol in The Expendables, which Stallone is also directing, is a career high-point for Statham. “I’ve seen every movie Sly has ever done, he’s one of the legends of our time,” he says. “I’m just going along for the ride playing one of a bunch of mercenaries sent to South America to overthrow a dictator.” Statham continues, “Stallone is a great guy. When I first met him I was surprised by how funny he is as well as being charismatic. And he looks as fit as a butcher’s dog. He’ll live up to his reputation doing

"The last thing I want is a punch-up every time I go out for a nice sociable drink. I try to stay away from pubs that are frequented by hooligans." The Expendables. I knew a few of the people that were working on Rambo and they told me he’s a right tough guy. Apparently, one day he was having lunch and he got bit by a snake. He just flung it away and kept on eating. That’s what I’d call a guy’s guy.” Fast Cars and Fisticuffs Statham feels quite comfortable behind the wheel. He isn’t faking the driving skills he first displayed in Transporter. “I think I’ve had enough hours in a car that I know what I’m doing,” he says, “although I may not be the Michael Schumacher. I narrated a documentary on Le Mans, which is a fabulous race. I’d love to give that a go. But those cars are frightfully fast and I’d probably be out of my league.”

Statham says of his tough guy persona in films such as Transporter 3 (top) and Death Race (above), “I guess that’s how people want to see me.” Right: Statham at the premiere of Transporter 3 at Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino with his friend Robert Earl, co-chairman of the property.

“I’ve had the occasional challenge at a stop light when somebody pulls up and recognizes me,” he continues with a sly grin. “Sucker that I am there was one bugger that I did race. I beat him too. He was trying to show off for his girlfriend, but he wimped out. I’m not doing it anymore, though. I don’t think a headline about me racing through traffic would be a boost for my career.” Statham, who owns two top-of-the-line Audis like the ones he drove in the Transporter films, confesses that in addition to fast cars, he also has a passion for Ultimate Fighting. “I’m a big fan,” he says, “I love to go to the UFC matches. I have dreams of maybe trying it but I’m far too small and too old. The thought of me stepping into the ring with someone like Chuck Liddell is a frightening thing. There’s no way. Those guys are just so lethal.” The one challenge Statham hopes he’ll never face is from someone who wants to see if he’s as tough as his on-screen characters. “People don’t tend to test me on that kind of thing,” he says. “Thank God, because the last thing I want is a punch-up every time I go out for a nice sociable drink. I try to stay away from pubs that are frequented by hooligans.” Statham insists that he’s happiest when he isn’t getting a lot of attention. “Back home I ain’t that popular,” he says. “Believe me. People are a bit more reserved back in the U.K. They’re not running around with pens and papers. Every now and again you get an odd fan here and there. But it’s not like I’m Brad Pitt or Tom Cruise.”

With its stunning 3D images entirely generated by computer, Toy Story forever changed the world of big-screen animation. The box office success of the Pixar Studios' first feature film, released in 1995, foreshadowed the decline of hand-drawn classics like Walt Disney’s Bambi, Lady and the Tramp and Fantasia. Now, animated films using CGI (computer-generated imagery) are making big bucks and reeling in new audiences—thanks to Disney/Pixar and DreamWorks, which have scored both at the box office and the Academy Awards while attracting an A-list of Hollywood performers as voice talent. Stars like Angelina Jolie admitted of her role as the sexy and powerful Tigress in Kung Fu Panda, “I tell everyone I did a cartoon movie for my kids, but that’s just an excuse. I’m a big kid myself and I love [animated films].” Animation’s Next Generation If Walt Disney were still around, he might remind us with his famous line, “I only hope that we don’t lose sight of one thing—that it was all started by a mouse.” The newest frontier in animation is 3D projection, which has come a long way since audiences first put on those awkward blue-and-red paper glasses and screamed as something seemed to leap out of the screen into their laps. DreamWorks pushed the envelope recently with Monsters vs. Aliens, and it was followed by Pixar’s motion picture Up, which earned the distinction of being the first animated feature to open the Cannes Film Festival.

Right: In the studio with Billy Crystal and John Goodman, voicing a scene together on Monsters, Inc. But behind the hype and the dazzling technology is a simple truth. As John Lasseter, who created and directed Toy Story and won Oscars for Monsters, Inc. and Cars puts it, “Basically, what makes money is entertaining films.” That’s why Kiefer Sutherland, who provides the voice of the crusty General W. R. Monger in Monsters vs. Aliens, remembers what influenced him as a kid. “For my generation, it was Bambi,” he says. “It was one of the most dramatic films I’ve [ever seen]. The mother dies in the first act and it becomes a great coming-of-age story. As much as I must have cried, at the end of the film, I was just amazed how I felt. Animated movies for me were the doorway to a wonderful world.”

“I tell everyone I did [Kung Fu Panda] for my kids, but that’s just an excuse. I’m a big kid myself.” –Angelina Jolie Tigress, played by Angelina Jolie (right) and Monkey, voiced by Jackie Chan (far right) appear in Kung Fu Panda. Center: Hugh Laurie is the mad scientist Dr. Cockroach in Monsters vs. Aliens.

Lending a Voice Other Hollywood stars readily admit that they were drawn to act just with their voices to add magic to the powerful stories. Mike Myers remembers why he loved being Shrek. “He was an outsider just like I was as a kid. I was small with really bad acne, and I could relate to somebody who faces up to what he really is, and accepts himself.” Cameron Diaz reveals of playing Fiona, “I may look like a princess when I have to because that’s my job, but most days I feel like an ogre.” Jack Black starred as lovable bear Po, a character who overcomes self-doubt to beat the bad guys in Kung Fu Panda. “I was reminded of myself as a kid,” he says, “An innocent chubby dreamer on a quest to find his destiny. I want my own son to get the message in the movie, which is to follow your dreams.” Then he adds with his trademark dead-pan humor, “But the best part of doing an animated film was that I didn’t have to wear make-up or come early to the set.” Black’s co-star, Academy Award-winner Dustin Hoffman, who plays Shifu, his tiny mouse martial arts mentor says, “I got to do my own stunts just like Harrison Ford, even if an animator was giving me a little help. It’s the most fun I’ve had since I learned to play tennis.” John Goodman connected with the giant furry blue guy Sulley he voiced in Monsters, Inc. “He reminded me initially of these old NFL players,” Goodman says, “The great big guys who were very scary looking, but underneath they had a heart of gold.” Reese Witherspoon admits it was ironic that she was chosen to provide the voice for the hugely tall and reluctant super heroine Ginormica in Monsters vs. Aliens. “It was great because growing up I had all sorts of vulnerabilities. I wore big glasses and I was always the shortest kid in class. They called me ‘the little terrier’ because I was sort of a little mighty-might. I think you’re always trying to find your own strength and battle your own insecurities and find the superhero inside you.” Then she adds, “My kids were finally impressed by seeing me in a film. It has just blown their minds. They can’t believe I’m so strong and so cool.” While kids will always be a big part of the audience, the new generation of animated features speaks to grown-ups too. That’s nothing new, according to Brad Bird, who took home Academy Awards for The Incredibles and Ratatouille. “Cartoons were shown for people to watch before they saw the latest Humphrey Bogart film. They weren’t made just for children; they were made for all of us.”

For those who regularly enjoy the casino’s 1,750 slot and video poker machines, the new PH Perks program has made gaming at Planet Hollywood more convenient.

amped-up action

Free Slot Play All free slot play handed out by the casino can now be redeemed at any of Planet Hollywood’s machines, whether it comes in the form of a direct mail offer, a-List slot promotions or free credits you receive by joining the a-List Players Club. These special reward credits, dubbed “PH Bonus Play,” are loaded directly onto your player’s card. Insert your card into any Planet Hollywood slot machine and you’ll download your credits instantly to use on your favorite machine.

Those signing up for the revamped and upgraded a-List are required to create a PIN number, which is used to download free play credits. For existing members, the casino has made it convenient to transition to the new system; easy-to-use “PIN pads” have been installed in the VIP lounge, as well as in the high-limit slot room, enabling players to quickly generate their personalized number. Three Tiers The a-List Players Club has three levels: Red, Gold and Platinum. New members begin at Red status and must earn 3,000 points—over the course of a year’s time—to ascend to the Gold level. Reach 20,000 points, and you’ll earn Platinum status. As you rise through the ranks your amount of PH Award Play increases and you’ll become eligible for complimentary limo transportation, priority valet service and invites to special events.

Prior to the rollout of PH Perks, points accumulated by a-List members (the name of the resort’s player loyalty program) had to be redeemed for cash back at the main cashier’s cage. The new system is far more convenient for players, as they can now convert their points into “PH Award Play” right at their machine. Simply press a couple of buttons on the LCD display, complete a quick PIN-protected transaction and your points will be downloaded directly onto your machine.

from the silver screen to the slot floor Slot players love the variety of games offered on Planet Hollywood’s bustling casino floor, which range from classic favorites to the latest high-tech, next-generation marvels. You’ll also find unique Planet Hollywood creations—such as “Planet Pennies,” a progressive game that offers one-cent minimum bets and impressive jackpots (that can reach over $70,000).

Naturally, Planet Hollywood also keeps its slot floor stocked with the hottest games based on blockbuster films and TV shows. You’ll find Wizard of Oz, Indiana Jones and Rocky games (Sylvester Stallone is a regular visitor to Planet Hollywood), while games currently on order include Jaws, Star Trek and even a game based on The Sopranos. While slot manufacturers have created many moviethemed and celebrity-based games, Planet Hollywood has its own suite of custom slot products that includes not only Planet Pennies, but also Director’s Cut, PH Super Spin, and Planet Hollywood Doubles. This combination of products reinforces the Planet Hollywood brand which speaks to celebrity, classic films and movie stars.

In this special area of the casino floor, the excitement of the game is enhanced as women in lingerie dance on elevated platforms to pulsing Top 40 remixes, while dealers wearing red and black corsets distribute the cards. The purpose of the high-energy Pleasure Pit is to create an atmosphere that’s fun and exciting, but less intimidating for players. “It’s a very sensual, very sexy area of the casino,” says Ken Mumby, the resort’s Vice President of Casino Operations. The Pleasure Pit has a total of 21 games—14 blackjack tables, four roulette tables and three Big Six wheels. The gaming area, which is located in the center of the casino floor, is open seven nights a week from 8 p.m. until dawn and operates during the day Friday through Sunday.
