THE CITY DIFFERENT

• Best small city destination in the United States • Second-best city overall • Tenth most popular city destination in the world • Ranked in the top 10 as a food destination • Santa Fe Opera offers the second-best outdoor music venue in the entire country RANDY RANDALL Executive Director Tourism Santa Fe

These are just a few of the things others are saying about Santa Fe, and they represent the essence of the reason our wonderful city is affectionately referred to as “the City Different.” The story of how Santa Fe became known as the City Different is interesting. In 1912, when the territory of New Mexico became a state, a national campaign called “City Beautiful” was in place, attempting to minimize urban blight in major U.S. cities as affluent residents moved to the suburbs. As the capital of the new state, Santa Fe was asked to participate in City Beautiful, although we had no suburbs or urban blight. The city fathers felt it would be more appropriate to be called the “City Different” — one without those problems. Flash forward more than 100 years, and Santa Fe is still unlike any other capital or city in the U.S. It is still an example of a beautiful, healthy and unique community. To truly understand the meaning of “City Different,” one must experience Santa Fe and gain a personal understanding of it, from the incredible natural beauty, the breadth and depth of the performing arts and events, the excellence of the visual arts and their concentration on Canyon Road and in the Railyard, the uniqueness and consistency of the architecture, and the distinctive cuisine to the simple purity of the air and light. One of these qualities — or perhaps all of them — will allow you to understand how Santa Fe truly is the City Different and such a special a place to visit. Come to Santa Fe to find an experience like no other.

CELEBRATING DOWNTOWN VIBRANCY!

CYNDI CONN, Executive Director Creative Santa Fe

W

e truly appreciate the opportunity to regularly share with Sotheby’s International Realty Santa Fe Style readers the work that Creative Santa Fe is doing for our community. Creative Santa Fe’s mission is to strengthen Santa Fe’s economy by cultivating thought leadership and spearheading collaborative projects at the intersections of art, culture, technology, education, and industry. In my previous article I discussed the critical need for Santa Fe to attract and retain a younger demographic while continuing to promote the incredible assets that make our city one of the top tourist destinations in the world. Creative Santa Fe is working closely with the City of Santa Fe, nonprofits, businesses, and educational partners to actively promote the assets in our city that attract a younger demographic — assets that extend far beyond Santa Fe’s established international brand and renown. Through our extensive network of partners and collaborators we continue to discover incredible organizations and strengths in our city that directly speak to the desires and demands of younger generations.

One of the specific collaborative events Creative Santa Fe hosts each year is the FANTASE Fest. This spectacular onenight event highlights the importance of connecting people and networks to build a vibrant, sustainable, and engaged community. This year’s fest will take place in the downtown DeVargas skate park on Saturday, June 20, from 6 p.m. till midnight and will transform downtown Santa Fe into an extravaganza of light, art, music, and vitality. This festival enables artists of all backgrounds to push their practice beyond the gallery and museum, to engage a large and diverse audience, and to explore an expanded identity for the city of Santa Fe and New Mexico at large. A sample of our partners to date include the Santa Fe Arts Commission, the Academy for the Love of Learning, the City of Santa Fe, Make Santa Fe, the Metropolitan Planning Organization, National Dance Institute, National Latino Behavioral Health Association, New Mexico Department of Tourism, New Mexico Music Commission, New Mexico Workforce Connection, Santa Fe Opera, Santa Fe Community College,

sothebyshomes.com/santafe

Santa Fe University of Art and Design, and Street Food Institute. The FANTASE Fest has a real impact on our city. Over the past two years, we have had more than 125 participating community partners, with more than 2,000 attendees at each festival. 90 percent of the festival’s audience is under the age of 44, and 82 percent of our budget goes directly back into the local creative economy. The last two festivals combined have given back approximately $64,000 to our creative workforce. I invite you to join us on June 20 to celebrate the art, music, food, talent, and sense of community that truly make Santa Fe “The City Different.” Together, we can strengthen and promote those aspects of our city that will attract a new demographic of tourists and residents. Recognizing and celebrating all that Santa Fe has to offer — and pushing beyond our traditional definitions — will generate greater economic opportunities, attract a new and vibrant demographic, and safeguard the future of our city. FANTASE Fest 2014

In 1976, an exceptional real estate company was launched bearing the Sotheby’s name. That spirit of innovation has remained a vital hallmark of the Sotheby’s International Realty brand, today a commanding presence in the marketing and sale of the world’s most exceptional properties. Located in approximately 730 offices in 56 countries and territories worldwide, Sotheby’s International Realty artfully unites extraordinary homes with extraordinary lives around the globe. In Santa Fe, thanks to the hard work and dedication of our brokers, our firm is widely recognized as the leader in offering the rare combination of local expertise and international connections. No other Santa Fe firm comes close to matching our market share or our ability to reach a dynamic, qualified, truly global clientele. Since 1744, Sotheby’s auction house has been uniting collectors with world-class works of art. Two examples of recent sales with close, impactful connections to Santa Fe were the record-breaking sale in November 2014 of Georgia O’Keeffe’s Jimson Weed, White Flower No.1 for more than $44,000,000 — which directly benefitted Santa Fe’s Georgia O’Keeffe Museum — and the May 2015 auction of yet another iconic painting by O’Keeffe, White Calla Lily (shown above), which fetched an impressive $8,986,000. Each sale resulted in focused international attention on Santa Fe and its abundant, diverse, enduring culture. That culture, so highly regarded by the international community, is such an inspirational part of our daily lives here. These pages offer an overview of some of the very finest properties in the Santa Fe area. You will also find, on page 6, an informative message from Randy Randall, executive director of Tourism Santa Fe, extolling just some of the reasons we have become recognized as “The City Different.” On page 9, Cindy Conn, executive director of Creative Santa Fe, writes in celebration of our downtown vibrancy and the exciting impact that collaborative events, such as FANTASE Fest, continue to have on our community. Historic, thriving, and engaged — these are just a few of the words used to describe our city and the excitement and diversity that await as you contemplate your next real estate purchase.
