Whether moving to a new city or just across town, choosing an area that feeds into a good school district is at the top of every family’s checklist. Exemplary-rated schools, a variety of extra-curricular opportunities and a safe environment are among the musts for parents on the house hunt. The Houston area is home to 18 different school districts, boasting some of Texas’ most respected public schools. From Houston Independent School District’s Magnet and Vanguard programs to Fort Bend Independent School District’s national honors, families can find an area and a district that meets their student’s needs. For an in-depth look at Houston area school districts, visit the Texas Education Agency, but below are some highlights of local school districts. Houston Independent School District (HISD) is the largest district in Texas, and one if its most acclaimed programs is its magnet schools specializing in everything from performing arts and science to health professions and law enforcement. There are 55 elementary magnet schools, 30 magnet middle schools, and 27 magnet high schools in HISD. Students kindergarten through 12th grade can apply to specific magnet schools focusing on language, fine arts, STEM (science, technology, engineering and math), Montessori and college preparation. FBISD draws families relocating from other cities and states to the Sugar Land area because of its strong academic reputation. It was the only school district in the nation to be named a 2011 National School District of Character by the National Schools of Character Program in Washington D.C., an honor bestowed upon just one other Texas school. In 2011, The Washington Post ranked Clements, Austin, Kempner, Travis, Dulles, Hightower and Elkins high schools among the Top 2011 high schools in the nation. The district has also been lauded by Newsweek and Texas Monthly for its highly-ranked schools and earns high ranking on national surveys for its fine arts education programs. Families moving to Houston’s upscale Memorial area attend school in the Spring Branch ISD, another lauded district. The U.S. Department of Education designated 19 schools with the “Blue Ribbon” designation in 2011, and six campuses were named 2010 NCEA Higher Performing Schools by ACT and the National Center for Educational Achievement for student achievement in math, reading, science and/or social studies in 2010. Relocating north? The Woodlands is an affluent master-planned community attracting families to the lush and vibrant area. Public school students attend Conroe Independent School District, one the fastest-growing districts in Texas. CISD earned a Recognized rating for 2011, from the Texas Education Agency, and its students continue to score above the state and national average on standardized tests, including the TAKS, PSAT, SAT, ACT, and AP tests.
Heather Staible is a nationally-published lifestyle writer whose work appears in People magazine, Women’s Wear Daily, Culturemap.com, plus other regional and national publications.
Choosing the right school district is an important decision, so contact potential schools and inquire about rankings, programs to suit the individual needs of your student, and explore the kinds of schools open to your student. Ask to tour the schools in the neighborhood where your children are zoned for a hands-on look. It’s one of the smartest moves you will make.

Many paths lead to the doorstep of Legacy Community Health Services Southwest in Houston. Some start in Central America, South America, Africa, India, and Asia. Others, which make up the majority, come from Mexico. The common denominator is the desire for affordable healthcare—but Legacy offers so much more. The story of Legacy Southwest is the story of the changing face of Houston. Located between the Galleria and Sharpstown, the campus sits in the most densely populated part of Houston known as “Gulfton.” During the 1970’s and into the early 80’s, it was the epicenter for young, unmarried professionals. Rows and rows of huge apartment complexes filled its more than three-square-mile border. Most of the units were single occupancy. Today the neighborhood is very different.
“The oil bust in the mid-80s coincided with civil unrest in Central America,” says Legacy Pediatrician Dr. Margaret Goetz. Both events created a seismic shift in Houston population. The city’s economic slump caused a massive exodus from the southwest part of town. Suddenly, this formerly bustling part of Houston was a ghost town. Then, a tremendous influx of immigrants flowed northward to fill the vacant buildings. By the 2010 census, Gulfton reported residents from 82 countries, with speakers of 16 different languages. “We are the Ellis Island of the South,” says Lizzette Tienda, Community Relations Manager, Legacy Southwest. Legacy stepped into Gulfton when it acquired the existing CHRISTUS Health Clinic in 2010 and quickly implemented specific programs to serve the ethnic makeup of the neighborhood. It also made the extraordinary decision to retain nearly 100 percent of the staff. “We simply arrived on the first day with a different logo on our nametags,” says Maria Cantu-Ondarza, Director of Health Promotions. Legacy Southwest patient Azuzena found Legacy through conversations with other young mothers in her neighborhood. She attended “Becoming a Mom” classes to help her prepare for the birth of her second child while her four-year-old daughter was cared for in the onsite daycare center. The classes teach prospective parents prenatal health along with child safety and nutrition. “I learned so much about childcare at Legacy that would have helped me with my first child,” says Azuzena. For her, Legacy’s active participation in their clients’ welfare is one of By Sally Benson
the best parts of the clinic. “What I like is if you don’t show up for an appointment, they call you” she says. “I know it’s because they care.” Another young woman, Adrianna, discovered Legacy by searching “prenatal” online. The dietary lessons she learned have been lifechanging for her and her family. “In my community, we tend to think that eating the most is the best…that if we eat a lot, that means it’s healthy, but it’s not,” Adrianna says. This is not your ordinary prenatal class. At Legacy, she says, “I was encouraged to dance with my husband through the pregnancy experience.” “Our goal in the prenatal class is a healthy baby, a healthy mother, and a healthy family,” says Cantu-Ondarza. Graduation from the “Becoming a Mom” class is celebrated with a baby shower. All the moms-to-be have lunch, open presents, and raffle off a gift basket full of baby necessities. They also have a casual question-and-answer period with Legacy pediatricians. It is a fun and festive environment to address any last-minute parenting concerns. Babies aren’t the only draw to the clinic. Diabetes brought Flor to Legacy. She is shy and soft-spoken until she talks about what Legacy means to her. Then, she lights up. “Coming to the clinic is like coming to my second home,” Flor says. The lessons she learned in Legacy’s “Diabetes Self-Management” classes have altered meals at her family’s dinner table. “I have changed my diet and learned about portion control” she adds. Legacy has taught her to be responsible for her diabetes, and she has enjoyed the six years in her class so much that she has become an unofficial greeter and sponsor for new attendees. “Hispanics are the second-highest group for diabetes in the United States,” says Cantu-Ondarza. “The majority eats low-cost but highrisk food heavy in salt. We teach them to eat across ethnic lines. We have a kitchen and do demonstrations of lunch and breakfast. We set up a mini store and help them compare labels and learn healthy serving portions.” Hands-on activities teach patients to measure carbohydrates and fats as part of a healthier lifestyle. They also learn how to take their blood pressure, how to measure glucose, and how to understand their medications and take them accordingly. Primary medical care, prenatal, pediatrics, and behavioral health take a front seat at the southwest clinic. Legacy brought behavioral health onboard as a crucial component to family fitness, and education is stressed every step of the way. “We noticed that some of our clients do not know how to read or write in their own language,” Tienda says. In true Legacy fashion, programs were immediately put in place for literacy, computer skills, and GED classes in both Spanish and English. “We target the mothers who will read to their children,” she adds. “To empower the mom is to empower the child.” Legacy Community Health Services Southwest whirls in constant motion to maintain 360-degree care of its patients. The pull is so strong that a group of women who have graduated from Legacy programs meet every Friday at the clinic to socialize and to knit and crochet. Since coming to Legacy is literally a family affair, they bring their children and grandchildren. Reflecting the feelings of all Legacy staff and volunteers, Cantu-Ondarza says, “I can’t wait to come to work each morning and find out who I get to help today.”

t is axiomatic that any city which aspires to be great must have a great urban park. Think of Central Park in New York, Grant Park in Chicago, Golden Gate Park in San Francisco, Hermann Park in Houston. And if you’re inclined to be skeptical about the inclusion of our own Hermann Park in such august company, well, perhaps you haven’t been there recently. Nestled between the Texas Medical Center, Rice University, and the Museum District, Hermann Park has provided a respite for Houstonians for nearly 100 years; but over the last 20 years, it has been reborn. During the past two decades, more than $100 million has been raised to bring the park to a level at which it invites comparison to the other great parks in the country. Now it’s time to show it off, so we thought we’d throw a party— and what could be a better occasion than a Centennial? (Not a word we hear often in Houston!) Actually, we’re going to throw a lot of parties . . . but I’m getting ahead of myself. A little background: Hermann Park was a gift to the City of Houston from philanthropist George Hermann in 1914. George Kessler of Kansas City, then the foremost land planner in the country, was commissioned to design a master plan. Unfortunately, two world wars and the intervening Great Depression put a bit of a crimp in the plans, and the park languished in an incomplete state for many years. In 1992, the Hermann Park Conservancy—originally Friends of Hermann Park—took on the task of completing the original vision and forged a public-private partnership with the City of Houston to accomplish its goal. World-renowned landscape architect Laurie Olin developed the master plan; and now, 20 years later, that plan is nearing completion. During the last two decades, the Conservancy has completed the rebuilding of most of the park: the Jones Reflection Pool, McGovern Lake, Tiffany Bridge, and Kinder Station—home of the beloved Hermann Park Railroad—but our centennial year will see the completion of some of the largest and most important projects ever undertaken in the park. The historic main entrance to Hermann Park, called the Grand Gateway, runs from the Mecom Fountain to the Sam Houston Monument. It will be completely rebuilt with seasonal gardens and walkways to create an entrance worthy of a great park. The current Garden Center will be reborn as the McGovern Centennial Gardens, a 15-acre site with rose gardens, an interactive family garden, 30-foot high garden mount, woodland gardens, and a football-field-sized event lawn. But the jewel will be the Cherie Flores Garden Pavilion designed by AIA Award-winning architect Peter Bohlin, who is best known for designing the Apple stores. Now, I know I promised you a party—and actually, there will be a bunch: Hats in the Park luncheon, Evening in the Park gala, the Kite Festival, Park to Port Bike Ride, Dog Walk with the Rockets (I’m not making this up), concerts, Art in the Park featuring art installations by premiere contemporary artists from around the world and, well, a whole lot more. So come see us in the park, and bring the family. We’ll be looking for you. Sanford Criner is a native Houstonian and co-chair of Hermann Park Conservancy’s Centennial Campaign.

he spectacular home at 115 Arnold in the Rice Military area near Memorial Park is one of Houston’s so-called “Tin Houses.” The genre began in 1969 on the Rice University campus with the construction
of two Galvalume-sided structures commissioned by philanthropists and art patrons John and Dominique deMenil. The deMenils enlisted architects Howard Barnstone and Eugene Aubrey to design corrugated buildings as housing for the art and art history departments and for the deMenils’ Institute for the Arts. The simple, unassuming design of the structures became the inspiration for a series of “Tin Houses,” Galvalume-sided homes designed by Houston architects primarily in the West End and Rice Military areas. Positioned on 25,000 square feet of unrestricted property, this home is ideal as a one-of-a-kind residence and business for those seeking an integrated

One of the things that makes Houston such a great place to live is our reputation as a place for world-class cuisine. With options as diverse as our population, no matter what your neighborhood, you’re bound to find a spot that serves up imaginative cuisine. Here’s just a sampling of what you might order tonight. DOWNTOWN – Line & Lariat: In the historic Hotel ICON, Executive Chef Tyler Malson turns out regionally inspired dishes reflecting the bounty of Texas’ coast, waterways, farms and ranches. Also on offer: iconic and contemporary craft cocktails, along with a selection of regional draught beers and fine wines. 220 Main St. 713.224.4266 www.hotelicon.com
Killen’s Steakhouse Bone-In Chop
WEST UNIVERSITY/RICE U – Coppa Osteria: Order the spaghetti carbonara and get ready for a treat. Chef Brandi Key has crafted a menu of Italian delights, served in an easy-going, approachable atmosphere. This Rice Village eatery sports a wrap-around patio, perfect for sipping cocktails or wonderfully quirky wine finds, and the food offerings include pizzas, sandwiches and entrees made for sharing. 5210 Morningside Dr. 713-522-3535 www.coppaosteriahouston.com
THE HEIGHTS – The City Oven: Half-pound burgers, inventive pizzas and giant meatballs are on offer at this casual, neighborhood eatery in the heart of The Heights. If that’s not enough to tempt you, the place has all-day happy hours on Sunday and Monday, and Big Beer Wednesdays. 2802 White Oak Dr. 713-868-3400 www.thecityoven.com RIVER OAKS – Ouisie’s Table: This 40-year-old favorite is still famous for its Southern hospitality and a menu that blends Gulf coast favorites like crispy fried oysters and chicken fried steak with eclectic seasonings and presentations; to wit, grilled lamb chops dusted with cumin and chicken served in a Creole mustard sauce. 3939 San Felipe 713-528-2264 www.ouisiestable.com MEMORIAL – Bistro Provence: The Provençal cuisine here will transport you to the south of France. The wine list showcases excellent, boutique finds, and the menu changes often through the seasons. Also on offer: winemaker dinners with exquisite food and wine pairings. 13616 Memorial Dr. 713-827-8008 www.bistroprovence.us BELLAIRE – Molina’s Cantina: Go for the Jose’s Dip, wonderfully rich queso with taco meat. Stay for the grilled redfish topped with mango salsa and served with grilled vegetables. Since 1941, the Molina family has been serving up Mexican classics, with its combination of spicy flavor and casual atmosphere. 3801 Bellaire Blvd. 713-432-1626 www.molinasrestaurants.com SUGAR LAND – Churrascos: The star here is The Churrasco, a chargrilled center cut beef tenderloin seasoned with chimichurri served with crispy yuca cake, pickled onions and béarnaise sauce. If that’s not your style, you’ll surely find something else to love on the Latin-infused menu, where every item must first be ‘yummy,’ before it ever hits your table. 1520 Lake Pointe Pkwy, Suite 500 832-532-5300 www.cordua.com

only a few years ago, but it was not the first avant-garde residential building in Houston to cause such a stir. An interesting parallel occurred nearly fifty years ago when a ten-sided, Mid Century Modern residential building was constructed at 5050 Woodway Drive at the edge of Pine Shadows and Tanglewood. Among Houston’s most distinctive structures and finest residences, 5050 Woodway, first named Executive House, was planned as an eight-story, luxury condominium building catering to high-end clientele. Completed in 1966 by Manhattan Construction Company, its daring decagonal design was the work of architects Walter Wisznia and Andrew Sakos, who had previously built a similar six-story building in Corpus Christi. In fact, Wisznia and his wife Sonia were some of 5050 Woodway’s early residents along with Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Sakowitz and Mr. and Mrs. George Strake, Sr. Marketing materials touted the building’s excellent location “convenient to smart shopping centers.” Amenities included 42 residential units with 117 parking spaces, storage lockers, five guest suites, available maid service, and a swimming pool. To this day, 5050 Woodway remains the home of choice for in-the-know Houstonians who appreciate the building’s iconic presence and upscale location “convenient to smart shopping centers.” Amenities now include building and grounds maintenance, electricity, cable television, internet, concierge, insurance for the common area, porter, recreational facilities, trash, water and sewer. Residents love the warm, inviting environment and neighborhood atmosphere, pristine Japanese garden and koi pond, inviting swimming pool and terraces, and panoramic views across Tanglewood, Memorial Park and River Oaks.

The business & future of HOUSTON
Houston is unique in leading the country in job growth and investment potential. Why? Because of the thriving domestic energy market and favorable tax and regulatory environment. Houston’s energy industry and the Port of Houston have made the city the No. 4 gateway market for foreign investors after New York, Los Angeles and Washington, D.C. As the city takes advantage of the opportunities that come with cheap domestic energy, other industries will begin to grow as well, making Houston–and the U.S.–more competitive and continuing to drive an increase in the number of new jobs. Houston’s job growth is tied only with Dallas at 3.6%, and the city’s population has swelled as the world’s best and brightest talent relocates to join the more than 6 million people in the Greater Houston area. Driven by this population boom, Houston will add more than 15,000 new apartments in the next 12 months, making it the number one apartment market in the nation. The flood of new employees into Texas means office spaces are being filled faster here than anywhere else in the nation. According to recent statistics, Dallas and Houston energy markets are absorbing 25% of the country’s office space. By comparison, the technology markets of Silicon Valley, Austin, Portland, San Francisco and Seattle combined take up a similar portion of the market. Houston alone has had almost 30%
of new office-space construction in the U.S. since 2012, and more than 70% of that space is pre-leased before the buildings are complete. Another factor that continues to push Houston’s growth is low cost debt. Houston’s gross domestic product growth of 4.8% is significantly higher than the U.S. rate of 2%, allowing businesses in this city an opportunity to borrow money at extremely favorable interest rates. That inexpensive debt will mean more expansion in all the diverse industries of the Houston region: health care, manufacturing and distribution, warehousing and transportation, hospitality, retail and real estate. For the most part, growth outside of Houston and Texas remains sluggish and vulnerable to near-future variables such as rising interest rates. But with Houston well positioned against fluctuations in the national and international economy, expect to see the city continue to grow for the foreseeable future. For once, this may not be a boom or a bubble; this might actually be sustainable and make Houston the “city of the present” and the national leader and model for the future. QUESTIONS FOR
FIVE CITY TREASURES - NICK SCURFIELD
Since it was founded in 1836 near the banks of Buffalo Bayou, Houston has always attracted a vast talent pool of scientists, artists, philanthropists and entrepreneurs. The Bayou City has steadily—and rapidly—grown over the last 178 years, thanks in large part to its massive port, railroad, oil and medical industries, not to mention NASA’s Johnson Space Center, home of the famed Mission Control Center.
Over the last several decades, Houston’s growth has reached a zenith. America’s fourth-largest city has become an international melting pot, a hub for the visual and performing arts, a veritable culinary destination and a global center for commerce with a thriving economy that has remained stable even in recent times of national recession. In the following pages, we profile five extraordinary individuals who have helped Houston achieve its lofty status—and five others who are continuing to help push the city even further into the stratosphere.
WHAT HAVE YOU SEEN CHANGE THE MOST IN HOUSTON? Since we moved here for the first time in 1980, progress has been across the board. Most notable visually is the incredible boom in highways and toll roads, which have nearly made The Woodlands and Katy parts of the city for commuting purposes. Also, the multiple skylines that now exist in the Energy Corridor, along 290 and the toll road, and The Woodlands have been added to those that existed in 1980 in downtown, the Galleria, Greenway Plaza, and Greenspoint areas. Add the new buildings in the Texas Medical Center and places like the Rice University Campus, and these are a proxy for progress and growth in our great city.
JIM
HACKETT
WHAT MAKES HOUSTON UNIQUE? It’s definitely the people and the focus on the energy and medical sectors. While there are so many professions that are important to Houston, none stand out like these two (now that NASA is being constrained). Houston has a can-do attitude and even its multi-generational families accept outsiders…as long as they commit to doing civic work. Houston places a great emphasis on merit and philanthropy (or service). Add to this the incredible diversity of ethnic, national, and religious identities and you have a truly cosmopolitan city that has wonderful restaurants, great performing arts, a fabulous system of parks, wonderful museums, etc. No one in Houston thinks they are smarter than anyone else, but we are willing to outwork them. The truth is that Houston has an incredible breadth and depth of intellectual talent, but we hide it as best we can.
HOW HAS LIVING IN HOUSTON CHANGED YOUR LIFE? It allowed me to pursue a technical profession in energy—and there isn’t anything more worthy, or intellectually stimulating, than finding competitively priced energy for the world. Houston also reinforced the family values we wanted for our children by exhibiting daily examples of respect for others, hard work, and, as appropriate, free expressions of their faith. Houston has also allowed us to engage in meaningful civic and charitable work with institutions like the Baylor College of Medicine, the Houston Grand Opera, Rice University, and the Menninger Institute, to name a few.
WHAT’S YOUR STOMPING GROUND? We love to go to new restaurants, but Damian’s, Tony’s, RDG, and Teala’s are old favorites that we love. Also, Memorial Park for riding and running. I love The Galleria, but it is a daunting thought to go there with the traffic and crowds.
WHAT SETS HOUSTON APART FROM OTHER MAJOR METROPOLITAN MARKETS? For one, it is growing. For another, it is friendlier. While it is missing the water or topography that might exist in NY, Boston, Chicago, or San Francisco, it has a lot of the other amenities, including better employment opportunities than in most of those cities.
EXECUTIVE CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD OF ANADARKO PETROLEUM CORPORATION
DENTON COOLEY
WHAT HAVE YOU SEEN CHANGE THE MOST IN HOUSTON? It has been a rewarding experience for me to see the gradual development and finally explosive enlargement of the medical institutions which comprise the Texas Medical Center. Houston has enjoyed many topographical features, but among them the discovery of oil in the area beginning with Spindle Top, later with the Conroe oil field and the East Texas oil fields. Houston has become a center for the oil and chemical industries replacing its importance in the days when agriculture dominated the area. I believe the success of our city depends largely upon the spirit that has been developed almost to a level of patriotism. Houstonians have all taken pride in the development of what is now the fourth largest city in the United States.
WHAT MAKES HOUSTON UNIQUE? I have always felt fortunate and grateful that my parents chose Houston for their home. This occurred more than a decade before my birth in 1920. The chosen area for Houston resulted from the Battle of San Jacinto which occurred only about 6 or 8 miles from the original battle. The Allen brothers chose this area for their speculation of a new city and laid out the streets in an orderly fashion. This is in contrast to most of the large cities in Texas. The area was very agreeable and had the confluence of several bayous into the Buffalo Bayou which soon provided the city to have an inland seaport. This is a characteristic of all the queen cities on the planet.
HOW HAS LIVING IN HOUSTON CHANGED YOUR LIFE? I was blessed like other youngsters in having available well-controlled and planned educational facilities, public schools, and later two major universities now known as Rice University and the University of Houston. I availed myself of the public school system and attended Montrose Elementary, Sidney Lanier Junior High and San Jacinto High School. From there I matriculated at The University of Texas in Austin.
FOUNDER AND SURGEON IN-CHIEF OF THE TEXAS HEART INSTITUTE, CHIEF OF CARDIOVASCULAR SURGERY AT ST. LUKE’S EPISCOPAL HOSPITAL, CONSULTANT IN CARDIOVASCULAR SURGERY AT TEXAS CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL, & A CLINICAL PROFESSOR OF SURGERY AT THE UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS HEALTH SCIENCE CENTER AT HOUSTON
My medical education began at The University of Texas Medical School in Galveston, but after two years I transferred to Johns Hopkins Medical School in Baltimore. While there I had the fortunate experience of becoming involved in the earliest days of cardiac surgery. From Baltimore I spent a year in London, England completing my training. In 1951, I returned to Houston where the Texas Medical Center was in its earliest days.
WHAT’S YOUR STOMPING GROUND? One of the things I enjoy doing when with my children and especially my grandchildren is to drive around the outskirts of Houston and point out areas well within the old city limits where I went hunting many times with my brother where we could shoot doves, rabbits, ducks and geese. These areas are now covered with beautiful homes, streets, curbs and sidewalks. I am just amazed at the growth of the city and the beauty of most of these new areas.
WHAT SETS THE HOUSTON MEDICAL INDUSTRY APART FROM OTHER MAJOR METROPOLITAN MARKETS? The spirit of Houston has always been progressive. The earliest founders of the city were ambitious for the future. They were civic minded, philanthropic individuals whose spirit has continued on through the present time. In the early days of cardiac surgery, I developed a program of open heart surgery which opened a new era in the development of the medical center. This culminated in my having chartered the Texas Heart Institute to identify the hospitals at St. Luke’s Episcopal and Texas Children’s Hospitals as a center for heart disease.
WHAT HAVE YOU SEEN CHANGE THE MOST IN HOUSTON? I grew up in New Orleans and came to Houston thirty years ago. Since then, the city has experienced tremendous growth, not only in size but also in business and diversity. As a result, Houston is becoming increasingly attractive to people from all walks of life, especially young professionals and entrepreneurs. This past year, there was a lot of positive press about our city’s economic and cultural development. I remember seeing an article this summer about how Houston is a place where people can come to “dream big and succeed,” and I think that’s very true. It is my hope that Houston will continue to thrive and be recognized as a wonderful place to call home.
JAN
DUNCAN
WHAT MAKES HOUSTON UNIQUE? Houston has the unique ability to merge its seemingly divergent characteristics into a very satisfying balance. Our city is cosmopolitan and yet down-to-earth, culturally rich but unpretentious, sprawling and diverse but close-knit and united. We have a thriving job market, an internationally-acclaimed medical center, a vibrant creative arts scene, outstanding universities, and many opportunities for people to find their niche. For those who aren’t familiar with our city, the word “Houston” might evoke images of concrete and traffic, not to mention sweltering summers. Admittedly, we have our fair share of these things! But we also have beautiful green parks and lovely, mild winters. And we are a very welcoming and eclectic community filled with kind, innovative, hard-working people who choose to cultivate and share their gifts here.
HOW HAS LIVING IN HOUSTON CHANGED YOUR LIFE? Everything changed when I came to Houston because it was here that I met Dan. One day, I was a second grade school teacher at Kinkaid; the next, I was married to an incredibly caring, humble, hard-working, devoted, generous, and faithful man—a man who grew more loving with every year that passed. Being Dan’s wife and partner for twenty years taught me so much about the power of giving and the importance of sharing my attention, energy, support and resources with others, especially those most in need. We both felt called to help alleviate suffering, and we were thankful to have the opportunity to do so. We knew that God had blessed us and would hold us accountable for how we used His gifts. Since my husband’s death in 2010, my prayer has been that God will help me to carry on this legacy of service with gratitude and an open heart. Dan was truly the love of my life, and I will never stop thanking God for our life together. It was a great blessing to be his wife, his partner, and his best friend.
WHAT’S YOUR STOMPING GROUND? My favorite “stomping ground” is anywhere I am in the company of loving, encouraging, good-hearted people. When you are with a cherished friend or family member, your favorite restaurant could be a cluttered kitchen, and your favorite venue could be a car where you share a good conversation. That being said, if the car happens to drive to Carrabba’s or Tony’s, I won’t be upset!
WHAT SETS HOUSTON APART FROM OTHER MAJOR METROPOLITAN MARKETS? We live in the fourth-largest city in the country, but it doesn’t feel like it. Houston has a distinctly small-town feel, and people are always stopping to smile, to visit, to affirm, and to be friendly. Unlike some other cities, Houston is not cliquish. It doesn’t matter where you came from or how long your family has lived here. What matters is your heart: whether you are living for more than just yourself, and whether you are eager to love and serve others. In my experience, I have found that Houston is a deeply generous community of individuals and families who care about others and go out of their way to help each other succeed. And I think this spirit of generosity is why people are coming to Houston and staying in Houston. There are hundreds of world-class physicians, researchers, and scientists at the Texas Medical Center who could easily work anywhere they wanted—but they choose to be in Houston. Brilliant young chefs are opening celebrated restaurants and drawing crowds from all over the country—yet they are here in Houston, not New York City or Los Angeles. Our city has so much to offer people who are willing to work hard, be kind, and care for others. If that describes you, then you will be embraced here.
PHILANTHROPIST
TONY
VALLONE
WHAT HAVE YOU SEEN CHANGE THE MOST IN HOUSTON? Many things come to mind, but the food scene the most. We are a great and demanding food city with diversity and depth—a city of food entrepreneurs.
WHAT MAKES HOUSTON UNIQUE? Again, we are a can-do city of arts and opportunity… an open city where going the extra mile pays off. We also happen to have the best economy in the country: diverse architecture, low cost of living, largest and most renown medical center in the world, second largest port, the nation’s leader in exports, new jobs and housing sales are only a few of the reasons our economy continues to flourish at an amazing pace. And that’s not even mentioning the world-class arts and frequent fun street festivals.
HOW HAS LIVING IN HOUSTON CHANGED YOUR LIFE? Houston has been very good to me. It’s a city that I can be proud of and whatever one wants is readily available and doable here. It has provided the cosmopolitan culinary canvas for me to create and perform.
WHAT’S YOUR STOMPING GROUND? I am at the restaurant most of the time, which I love. It’s impossible to operate fine dining at any level without a crafting, caring, choreographing, restaurateur at the helm and on premise. When I do eat out—which is not often—I like China Gardens and Maria Selma restaurants; otherwise I like to stay home, which is rare, and spend time with my family.
WHAT SETS THE HOUSTON RESTAURANT SCENE APART FROM OTHER MAJOR METROPOLITAN MARKETS? The high quality of diverse, ethnic cuisines and a friendly, willing attitude to please.

ROBERT L. COLEMAN
OR & DEPUTY CHAIR, VICE-CHAIR OF CLINICAL RESEARCH, ANN RIFE COX CHAIR IN GYNECOLOGY, DEPARTMENT OF GYNECOLOGIC ONCOLOGY,THE UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS, MD ANDERSON CANCER CENTER A professor of gynecologic oncology and vice-chair of clinical research at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, Dr. Robert Coleman is the nation’s leading voice on gynecological cancers and recently published a seminal academic piece on advanced-stage ovarian cancer. A professor of gynecologic oncology, Rob is M.D. Anderson’s leading investigator evaluating chemotherapy and surgical strategies for cancers of the ovary, cervix and uterus. He is internationally recognized for his leadership in the field and is about to kick off a first-in-human therapeutics study of systemically delivered small interfering RNAs in patients with solid tumors. Some folks believe that this approach could be a development with an unlimited upside.
WHAT HAVE YOU SEEN CHANGE THE MOST IN HOUSTON? My wife and I have lived here since 1960, so certainly a lot has changed. The Houston Astros, Houston Rockets and, of course, the Houston Texans didn’t even exist when we first came here. The city has grown quite a bit in the last 50 years, especially in the last couple of decades. It’s really become a melting pot of people from all over the country and all over the world, and I think we’ve seen the economy diversify a great deal from where it used to be so dependent on the energy and medical industries.
BOB
MCNAIR
WHAT MAKES HOUSTON UNIQUE? Houston has a can-do attitude that most cities don’t have. I think that really plays a big role in our city’s thriving economy, especially within such a prosperous business climate that we have here. We’re a city full of hard workers, risk-takers, entrepreneurs and loyal and adventurous spirits. I also think Houston probably has some of the friendliest people of any major city. We’ve got everything you’d want in a major metropolitan area, and we’ve got wonderful people and Texas hospitality to boot.
HOW HAS LIVING IN HOUSTON CHANGED YOUR LIFE? It gave me an opportunity to build a successful business that changed the quality of my life. My wife and I were born and raised in South Carolina, but we’re proud to call ourselves Houstonians. We’ve had the great pleasure of raising our children and grandchildren here, and we’ve had a number of great institutions we’ve been fortunate to be involved with like Rice University, Baylor College of Medicine, the Houston Grand Opera and the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. It’s really become a part of the fabric of who I am.
WHEN YOU’RE NOT AT RELIANT STADIUM, WHERE’S YOUR STOMPING GROUND IN THE CITY? I love being on one of our many great golf courses. Houston has good golf weather all year round, and there are beautiful courses all over the city.
WHAT SETS THE PROFESSIONAL SPORTS LANDSCAPE IN HOUSTON APART FROM OTHER MAJOR METROPOLITAN CITIES?
FOUNDER, CHAIRMAN & CEO, HOUSTON TEXANS
We have the best sports fans in the country, and our football fans are unbelievable. Everybody knows that Texans love their football, from high school on through the professional ranks, and Houstonians are certainly no different. They’ve embraced our franchise with open arms ever since we brought the NFL back to the city in 2002, even when our record wasn’t necessarily very good. Their passion is really just tremendous. We also have a history of world-class stadiums, from the Astrodome to Minute Maid Park to Reliant Stadium. It’s just another thing that sets our city apart.
ISABEL DAVID From a young age, Isabel David has had a passion for volunteerism. She and her husband Danny enjoy raising their two young boys in a city as vibrant and philanthropic as Houston. Isabel feels fortunate to have served numerous organizations including the Holocaust Museum Houston, Hermann Park Conservancy, Houston Grand Opera, the Menil Collection, M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, Houston Center for Literacy, Dress for Success Houston, the Alley Theatre and Recipe for Success Foundation. She is a co-chair of this year’s Another Great Night in November benefiting the Contemporary Arts Museum, and she and Danny are chairing the 2014 Opera Ball auction.
CHRIS SHEPHERD CHEF
Midwest-raised Chef Chris Shepherd left boundary-pushing Catalan restaurant to open Underbelly in March 2012, featuring locally-sourced food inspired by the ethnic diversity of Houston. The Art Institute-alum and former Executive Sous Chef-turned-Sommelier of Brennan’s brings his farm-to-table passion to fruition at the new spot, which sources ingredients from the Gulf Coast and surrounding farms and ranches. The in-house butcher shop, which only uses whole animals, supports Shepherd’s passion for butchering and charcuterie. The 2013 James Beard Award finalist was also named one of the Top 10 Best New Chefs in America by Food & Wine. Underbelly was named one of the best new restaurants in the country by Bon Appetit and Esquire and one of the 70 best new restaurants in the world by Condé Nast Traveler.

Under Rootes’ leadership, the Texans have earned many distinctions, including numerous “Crystal Awards” for marketing excellence. J.D. Power & Associates recognized the team for providing the best fan experience in the NFL and even featured the Texans as a service success story in their book entitled “Satisfaction.” Rootes was selected twice by SportsBusiness Journal as a member of its distinguished “Forty Under 40” list of leading sports executives.
