What has been your greatest memory in space? My greatest memory of my space experience is seeing the earth in its proper perspective with relation to the moon and sun. I could completely cover the earth with my thumb just 240,000 miles away. It is home for about 6 billion people. How fortunate we are.

What are your keys to success, and how do you define success? To be successful you must have a positive attitude, apply a determined effort in your work and never give up.

Where do you draw your inspiration from? I got my inspiration from successful people. My desire to become a naval aviator came from my uncle who was the 58th naval aviator and had a great career.

James Arthur “Jim” Lovell, Jr. is a former NASA astronaut and a retired captain in the United States Navy, most famous as the commander of the Apollo 13 mission, which suffered a critical failure en route to the Moon but was brought back safely to Earth by the efforts of the crew and mission control. Lovell was also the command module pilot of Apollo 8, the first Apollo mission to enter lunar orbit. Lovell is a recipient of the Congressional Space Medal of Honor and the Presidential Medal of Freedom. He is one of only 24 people to have flown to the Moon.
What was the best advice you were ever given? The best advice I received was to finish a task and concentrate on one program at a time.

What does “home” mean to you? “Home” is anyplace where there is a friendly environment, good neighbors and where there is no other place to go they have to take you in.

What has been your biggest obstacle in life, and how did you overcome it? My biggest obstacle was being rejected for the space program and then being accepted the 2nd time around.

If you could be a superhero, who would you be and why? I could not imagine myself being a superhero because in life it takes the teamwork of family and friends to accomplish tasks and to overcome obstacles.

What did you love most about living in Houston and / or in space? The friendly atmosphere of Houston was most enjoyable. Looking down at the silent panorama of the earth from space was most inspirational.

What will you miss the most about your Lake House on Lake LBJ? I will always miss the boating, the cookouts, and the beautiful sunsets with my family and neighbors on Lake LBJ.
