Hey Hey!

A

s we step into February, a month rich with love and loyalty, Women of Excellence Magazine is proud to present an edition that speaks to the heart of our community. This month, we celebrate the impact of Black excellence beyond the football field, the depth of Black love, and the unconditional companionship of our beloved pets. With the energy of the Super Bowl in the air, we’re shifting our focus to the coaches, mentors, and leaders who shape lives off the gridiron. Black coaches have long been at the forefront of fostering discipline, resilience, and leadership—not just in sports, but in everyday life. Their influence extends far beyond the final whistle, touching families, communities, and industries. This month, we highlight those who are molding the next generation of leaders both on and off the field. Our love isn’t limited to human relationships. In honor of National Pet Month, we are shining a light on the special bond between Black women and their pets. Whether it’s a loyal dog, a sassy cat, or any other beloved companion, pets bring joy, comfort, and emotional support to our lives. As we navigate this month of passion, purpose, and partnership, let us continue to uplift and support one another in every aspect of life. Thank you for being a part of Women of Excellence Magazine. Here’s to another month of excellence, empowerment, and evolution! With Love, Deborah

TIKTOK TIME To Shop

ooking for the latest style? Shopping last minute? Looking to strike a deal? Have you tried TikTok Shop?

Shopping on TikTok Shop offers several advantages over traditional online marketplaces. One of the key benefits is the authentic, real-person reviews. When browsing products on TikTok, you can often see influencers, everyday users, and creators demonstrate how the item works in real life, offering genuine, firsthand feedback. Having this key information helps the consumer gauge the quality and fit before making a purchase, which is something static product images and written reviews can’t always capture. Additionally, TikTok Shop lets you see how products fit in real time. Many creators show themselves wearing or using items, giving potential buyers an accurate visual of how the product looks and functions. This is especially useful for clothing, shoes, and accessories, where fit and style are crucial to decision-making. Another perk is affordable shipping. TikTok Shop often partners with sellers that offer competitive shipping rates, and depending on the seller and location, you might even enjoy free shipping or low-cost delivery options, making it a budgetfriendly choice. With the USPS halting deliveries from certain international retailers like Temu and Shein, TikTok Shop has become a viable alternative for online shopping. Many TikTok Shop sellers offer direct shipping, sometimes from local warehouses, which can eliminate the shipping delays and issues that transpire with international shipments. Combined with the personalized experience TikTok offers, attract an appealing option for savvy online shoppers looking for convenience and reliability.

BEYOND THE FIELD Beyond The Court Jason Royal

The Underdevelopment of Kids in AAU Youth Sports and the Role of a Coach Beyond the Court Youth sports have long been a pathway for development, discipline, and life skills. However, in the modern era—particularly in the AAU (Amateur Athletic Union) basketball circuit—there is growing concern that young athletes are being underdeveloped in crucial areas. While AAU provides exposure and competition, the emphasis on constant games over skill development, team dynamics, and personal growth has led to noticeable gaps in the readiness of young athletes, both on and off the court.

1. Teaching Life Skills – Coaches should instill values like discipline, accountability, and teamwork that translate into success beyond basketball. Lessons about handling adversity, working towards long-term goals, and being a leader are just as important as basketball fundamentals. 2. Encouraging Academic and Career Readiness – Not every athlete will go pro, but every athlete will need a career. Coaches must stress the importance of education, guiding players toward academic success, and alternative career opportunities within or outside of sports.

The Problem: Overemphasis on Exposure and Winning

BLACK LOVE Black Excellence

lack love is a testament to resilience, strength, and deep-rooted connection. It is more than romance—it is a revolution, a bond that has withstood historical challenges and emerged even stronger. From the struggles of slavery that sought to separate Black families to today’s societal pressures, Black love continues to thrive, serving as the foundation of Black excellence. Black excellence is the embodiment of greatness in all fields—arts, business, politics, and beyond. It is seen in trailblazers like Oprah Winfrey, Barack and Michelle Obama, and Beyoncé and Jay-Z, who not only achieve individual success but uplift their communities. However, excellence is not limited to celebrities. It is in everyday individuals breaking barriers, creating generational wealth, and redefining success on their own terms. Our founder, Deborah, has had the honor to be married to her husband, Mitchell, for 17 years and counting. Being married young, is never an easy task. Adding to this union are four incredible children, affectionately known as the Fantastic Four, set them out for a challenge. Within this union, there is always constant change but a constant is the love Mitchell and Deborah embody for God, one another, and their children. At its core, Black love fuels Black excellence. Strong families, supportive partnerships, and thriving communities create a foundation for success. Love in all its forms—romantic, familial, and communal—encourages confidence and ambition. It reminds us that we are seen, valued, and capable of achieving greatness. As we celebrate Black History Month and beyond, let us honor Black love for the power it holds in shaping legacies. Let us uplift Black excellence by supporting Black-owned businesses, mentoring future generations, and continuing to break ceilings. Because when we love ourselves, our partners, our families, and our people, we create a legacy that lasts for generations. Black love is not just about emotion—it is about action. And through that love, Black excellence shines.

ANIMALS ARE Family Too

ational Pet Month is a time to celebrate the joy, love, and companionship that pets bring into our lives. Whether they greet us at the door with wagging tails, comfort us on tough days, or simply make us laugh with their quirky personalities, our pets are more than just animals—they are cherished members of our families. This month serves as a reminder to appreciate their unconditional love and the lasting impact they leave on our hearts. Dogs aren’t just pets—they’re family. For 16 years, my family was blessed with the most loving, fashionable, and independent Pomeranian, Diamond. She wasn’t just a dog; in her mind, she was a queen. She never cared for playing with other dogs, always turning her nose up as if to say she was above it. She was my best friend, full of love and personality, and in 2023, we had to say goodbye. Diamond will always be a part of our hearts—a true gem who made every moment special. The bond between pets and their owners is truly special. They teach us patience, responsibility, and, most importantly, unconditional love. Whether it’s a morning walk, a playful moment, or just sitting together in silence, the presence of a pet brings a unique kind of comfort and companionship. Even after they’re gone, their love lingers in our hearts, reminding us of the beautiful memories we shared.

BROWN BEAUTY OF THE MONTH

Spotlight-Celebrity

Shawanda Simmons

Chef Shawanda Simmons – Founder & CEO of PassionEats Soul Food Restaurant & Catering A visionary in the culinary world, Celebrity Chef Shawanda Simmons is the founder and driving force behind PassionEats Soul Food & Catering. From humble beginnings to becoming one of Chicagoland’s most sought-after caterers, her journey is a testament to passion, perseverance, and purpose. The Making of a Chef, Shawanda’s love for cooking began at the tender age of ten when she took on the responsibility of preparing meals for her large family. What started as a necessity quickly became a calling. Inspired by her parents’ kitchen wisdom and nurtured under the guidance of her grandmother, Mrs. Bobbie Wilson of Dora, Alabama, Shawanda learned not only the art of cooking but also the importance of meal planning, presentation, and the joy of bringing people together through food. Her home soon became the heart of family gatherings, evolving from casual potlucks to wellplanned events where she was the go-to chef. Cooking was never a chore—it was therapy, an expression of love, and a gift that she would later transform into a thriving business. From Salon to Soul Food, Before launching PassionEats, Shawanda spent 15 years as a successful hairstylist and salon owner. But her entrepreneurial spirit didn’t stop at cosmetology. What began with a single pot of White Chicken Chili, sold right out of her salon, quickly grew into a booming demand for her flavorful dishes. She started selling meals on weekends, catering for schools, churches, and local businesses, and soon realized she had outgrown her home kitchen, and then the birthing began.

In March 2017, PassionEats officially opened its doors in Chicago, marking the beginning of a new chapter. With a commitment to quality, presentation, and exceptional service, Shawanda built PassionEats into a brand known for delivering an unforgettable dining experience. Shawanda is the owner of two booming restaurants, one private dining space for dinner gathering, a hair Salon and now a mentoring program for up and coming caterers called “The Caterers Compass”While she has had the honor of cooking for celebrities, her true passion lies in corporate catering, bringing people together over great food and meaningful experiences. Under Shawanda’s leadership, the company is dedicated to excellence in every dish served, whether for an intimate gathering or a grand event. She personally oversees every detail, ensuring that each meal reflects the high standards she’s built her name upon. Beyond business success, Shawanda is passionate about giving back. Her vision includes launching educational programs to teach young aspiring chefs (ages 5-25) the fundamentals of cooking, food handling, and hospitality— empowering the next generation with skills that will last a lifetime.Through her dedication, expertise, and unwavering commitment to her craft, Chef Shawanda Simmons continues to set the standard for excellence in soul food and catering.
